THIS COULD BE IN YOUR
FAMILY TOO…by ranjan r. joshi
Why  this title? The reason  is simple. We have some
myths rooted in our society  about the role of art in our
life. Child art is not at all counted as a serious means to
understand the purity of that child’s mind innocence. In
India SHANKARS WEEKLY moment started by Shankar Pillai
a cartoonist by profession in early fifties brought the
attention of the society to this child art cause. UNO’s
appeal to the world community about art and specially
child art as a must for human growth in day to day life and
education in early fifties, sixties created considerable
attention. My good friend painter Chandrakant Channe
created BASOLI GROUP in Nagpur nearly forty years ago
and is still very much strong part of cultural contribution in
nourishing the minds of Nagpur children. Fortunately I
could  witness for four decades this in my life time. This is
very important child art moment in India next to
SHANKARS WEEKLY moment mentioned earlier. Luckily I
belongs to that family whose four generations have been
nurtured on this child art since my father inculcated the
importance of it in us in early fifties. Let us understand
child art is not to create artist but to nurture the
innocence in us.  This presentation is a small effort to
record the same and motivate to look in your own family
something like this.

By  Ira’s  artist great grandfather Late  R.P.Joshi’s article
on child art appeared in  this book and the text quoted here in
this presentation is from the same.

BEAUTY LIES IN THE EYES OF
THE BEHOLDER…
To define fine art
appropriately one can
classify
1) Desire to draw, render and record.
2) Desire to sculpt or construct with the
specific idea.
3) Desire to perform by means of body
gesture  such as to dance or to act.

“Child Art” how to
motivate your child
towards ART.“Do the Doodle spell out
your state of mind?” by Graphologist
SEEMA HINGIRRANY, Deconstructs The  Doodle.
This was published in THE TIMES OF INDIA‐6th Nov.
2005, in Bombay Times supplement.
The child art when observed in the above
manner as said given example will allow
understanding the hidden potentials of the
child. There are many things such as memory
drawing, drawing by imitation, drawing by
imagination, if viewed seriously by the parents
the basic purpose of knowing the inclination of
the child’s mind set towards his future.
15
• Animals: These are usually sensitive to living
creatures. Doodles of weak, passive or small animals
indicate slowness, a lack of self‐confidence, and more
introverted tendencies. Doodles of aggressive animals
represent feelings of assertiveness.
• Stars: This indicates a feeling of hope and optimism.
• Flowers: represents our feminine side and a desire to
see growth, nature and reproduction.
• Cubes: The commonest doodles, they indicate a
desire to be constructive.
If they are 3Dimensional,they indicate ability or an
attempt to see all sides of the issue.
• Doodles are what you scribble absent‐mindedly on
paper while attending a Ho‐Hum college lecture,
talking on the phone to someone or even when
preoccupied with something else. These scribbles vary
from cartoons to self‐portraits. They often portray
character and personality of the person who is
doodling.
• Here are some we try and analyse:
you scribble
16
• Houses: These represent the doodler’s attitude
towards his or her domestic life.
A warm, inviting house‐one that looks
lived in; perhaps with smoke curling from the
chimney‐suggests the doodler has a happy and
positive attitude towards home life.
• Triangles: They reveal a rational state of mind.
• Trees: represent our egos and ambitions. Trees with
leaves and fruits indicates that the doodler associate
emotions of Love, sex and children with each other.
Bare drooping branches indicate depression and lack
fighting spirit.
• People: Doodling on profiles indicates the doodler
does not like the way he or she looks or feels that
they can not
Draw well. The face is important, smiles are desirable
obliviously, and frowns are not.
Missing of the parts of the face indicates a cautious,
suspicious doodler. Doodles of ears usually mean
that the doodlers feel they have to listen too much to
someonesomething.
• Foods: Drawing things to eat or drink indicate a need
for love or strong desire for something.
• Circles: They are associated with feelings sociable
and friendly with a desire to be flexible and loving.
• Arrows: This indicates ambition, drive and
motivation.

Imagination and make
believe world are the two
important stages one can
see in every child all over
the world. Symbolic
depiction evolves as the
child grows which is like an
X‐RAY of the mind. One has
to be very sensitive while
communicating with the
child. The environment
around the child is always
reflected in the free
rendering of art.
31
Why child stops drawing
after the age of 13
onwards? The reason is
entering into ADULTHOOD.
13teen to 19teen period of
growth puts child in the
dilemma of ‘rational
thinking’ and ‘age of
innonce.’ This is the stage
where, only those who are
inclined to lateral thinking
choose to be artist and the
liner thinkers opt for other
vocations….

The gist of this text is that it’s about Visual literacy. This is the
foundation of our subject. The environment perceived by our eye is
interpreted by the brain through various  visual forms such as
Alphabets, Pictures, human activities etc. It is received by decoding
colour, shape and thought. Education, Grooming and the Teacher are
important factors in this process. Education that gives insights.
Grooming that gives confidence and Teacher who coordinates all the
said things. Visual communication encompasses all together the above
said things. To understand child art one should be visually literate.
