late Prof. R.P.JOSHI.
He was an artist, art teacher, a
father with excellent values and
adorable family head. He created
new identity for us imbibing art
sensitivity
in his eight children.
My mother late INDUMATI
a gifted vocal classical singer,
inborn knitting craft artist and
the ultimate lovable, kind hearted
mother who created emotional
bodings
for the entire family.
This is an effort to express the
gratitude towards them
on behalf of my entire family.
My father wrote several articles
on art since 1942 till his death in
1987. His contribution to art of
woven textile design is also
covered besides paintings. His
views expressed through articles
on art education gives good
insights in today's context. It is

R.P.Joshi  encouraged his six 
children to acquire diplomas 
of the  following six branches 
of Sir J.J.School of Art 
compound, namely 
Architecture, Art Master, 
Printing Technology, Drawing 
and Painting, Commercial 
(Applied) Art and Sculpture 
and Modeling. 
R. P. JOSHI: Born 12th March 1911 at Alewadi‐Dict.Thane. Completed his school and higher art
education in Vasai and Mumbai. He stood first and second respectively in exams such as Drawing
Master (DM) and Art Master (AM) from Sir J.J.School of Art (appearing privately ). In 1939 he
joined artists such as S. K. Thosar and M.S.Joshi to form the Model Art Institute –Dadar, Mumbai,
and served as teaching faculty and Hon. Secretary till 1960. In 1949 was appointed as a lecturer in
textile design and colour in the famous V.J.T.I.‐Mumbai and retired after 25 years services. He
was visiting lecturer for the subject textile design and colour in institutes such as UDCT of Bombay
University, SASMIRA of Textile Industry and Nirmala Niketan for women education.
He was practicing artist participating art shows, art educationist, art critique and known as an
expert in child art education by contributing several articles in vernacular Marathi language. He
wrote special introductory article to introduce 1955 UNESCO’s report on art education. He
contributed his researched on the subject colour to encourage its awareness in the art community.
“Colour in costumes of India” co‐authored with Dr. Ms. S. Patwardhan was selected as Poster
Presentation from India in international colour conference –Monte Carlo‐France in 1985. He was
vice president Art Society of India and joint Secretary Bombay Art Society.
He died on 19th May 1987.

SUMMARIES OF THE ORIGINAL MARATHI 
ARTICLES IN ENGLISH:  
First article published in 1942 is about Art and Education and its importance. It
talks about creating sensitivity about art in general education. Art is sometimes
inborn with some students. This does not mean it cannot be taught. It helps
observe the subtlety of natural world. The myth about art is its easy subject to
teach which does not require special study and efforts. Art is as serious subject like
other which needs lot of preparations before introducing any lesson plan. Art helps
holistic development of a child. This article written nearly seven decades ago is still
relevant because over all attitude towards the subject Art has not changed even
today i.e. 2017.
Article published in 1950 is about understanding the importance of child’s creative
instinct. The subconscious mind of the child needs to express its inner world.
Drawing and painting is most powerful free and liberal way. Child is at stage where
verbal or textual expression is impossible. Art is an extension of his/her innocent
narrative world. The emotional aspect of child’s inner mind get free outlet when
art is introduced to them. Imagination becomes interpretation depicted through all
together new visual imagery. Today the awareness of child arts is reasonably better
than what it was 67 years back. Left‐handers and right‐handers are accepted by the
society. Drawing by both the hands is accepted. He has a foresight about art that is
evident in this article.
Article published in 1953 is truly ahead as regards the subject like colour and its
appearance. The subject has scientific base which is explained in a friendly
manner. How colour is perceived and what are its symbolic attributes. The science
of optics that covers the rods and cones on the retina of the eye and how human
brain interprets colour and black/white sensation. It also covers our day to day
experiences about colour perception. He wanted to bridge the gap between art
and science which he persuaded the study of this colour subject till his death in
1987.

First article published in 1954 is about Art and Education and its importance. It
talks about creating sensitivity about art in general education which helps children
to be constructive. If we try to read the visuals in child art one will realize their
mental state is reflected like mirror image. The parents should understand the
hidden symbolic depictions in the child’s drawing and check the behavioral pattern
for positive change.

BIOGRAPHY OF ARTIST R. P. JOSHI - 1

  • 1. 1 This series of presentation is intend to cover the holistic biographical information and works of fine art of my father late Prof. R.P.JOSHI. He was an artist, art teacher, a father with excellent values and adorable family head. He created new identity for us imbibing art sensitivity in his eight children. My mother late INDUMATI a gifted vocal classical singer, inborn knitting craft artist and the ultimate lovable, kind hearted mother who created emotional bodings for the entire family. This is an effort to express the gratitude towards them on behalf of my entire family. My father wrote several articles on art since 1942 till his death in 1987. His contribution to art of woven textile design is also covered besides paintings. His views expressed through articles on art education gives good insights in today's context.   • 4. 4 आिकर् टेक्चर आटर्मा टर िप्रंटींग टेकनॅालॅािज डॅा्ईग आिण पेिटंग कमिशर्अल आटर् क लचर व मॉडेिलंग यां या आठ अप यापैकी सहाजण सर जे. जे. कू ल ऑफ आटर् आवारातील सहािवभागाचे पदिवकाधारक : R.P.Joshi  encouraged his six  children to acquire diplomas  of the  following six branches  of Sir J.J.School of Art  compound, namely  Architecture, Art Master,  Printing Technology, Drawing  and Painting, Commercial  (Applied) Art and Sculpture  and Modeling.  R. P. JOSHI: Born 12th March 1911 at Alewadi‐Dict.Thane. Completed his school and higher art education in Vasai and Mumbai. He stood first and second respectively in exams such as Drawing Master (DM) and Art Master (AM) from Sir J.J.School of Art (appearing privately ). In 1939 he joined artists such as S. K. Thosar and M.S.Joshi to form the Model Art Institute –Dadar, Mumbai, and served as teaching faculty and Hon. Secretary till 1960. In 1949 was appointed as a lecturer in textile design and colour in the famous V.J.T.I.‐Mumbai and retired after 25 years services. He was visiting lecturer for the subject textile design and colour in institutes such as UDCT of Bombay University, SASMIRA of Textile Industry and Nirmala Niketan for women education. He was practicing artist participating art shows, art educationist, art critique and known as an expert in child art education by contributing several articles in vernacular Marathi language. He wrote special introductory article to introduce 1955 UNESCO’s report on art education. He contributed his researched on the subject colour to encourage its awareness in the art community. “Colour in costumes of India” co‐authored with Dr. Ms. S. Patwardhan was selected as Poster Presentation from India in international colour conference –Monte Carlo‐France in 1985. He was vice president Art Society of India and joint Secretary Bombay Art Society. He died on 19th May 1987.

  • 11. 11 SUMMARIES OF THE ORIGINAL MARATHI  ARTICLES IN ENGLISH:   First article published in 1942 is about Art and Education and its importance. It talks about creating sensitivity about art in general education. Art is sometimes inborn with some students. This does not mean it cannot be taught. It helps observe the subtlety of natural world. The myth about art is its easy subject to teach which does not require special study and efforts. Art is as serious subject like other which needs lot of preparations before introducing any lesson plan. Art helps holistic development of a child. This article written nearly seven decades ago is still relevant because over all attitude towards the subject Art has not changed even today i.e. 2017. Article published in 1950 is about understanding the importance of child’s creative instinct. The subconscious mind of the child needs to express its inner world. Drawing and painting is most powerful free and liberal way. Child is at stage where verbal or textual expression is impossible. Art is an extension of his/her innocent narrative world. The emotional aspect of child’s inner mind get free outlet when art is introduced to them. Imagination becomes interpretation depicted through all together new visual imagery. Today the awareness of child arts is reasonably better than what it was 67 years back. Left‐handers and right‐handers are accepted by the society. Drawing by both the hands is accepted. He has a foresight about art that is evident in this article. Article published in 1953 is truly ahead as regards the subject like colour and its appearance. The subject has scientific base which is explained in a friendly manner. How colour is perceived and what are its symbolic attributes. The science of optics that covers the rods and cones on the retina of the eye and how human brain interprets colour and black/white sensation. It also covers our day to day experiences about colour perception. He wanted to bridge the gap between art and science which he persuaded the study of this colour subject till his death in 1987.
