Coronavirus vs Flu
Sore throat, watery eyes, chest pain, short breath, and high fever are the first common symptoms of coronavirus. But if we keep COVID-19 aside for a while, these are also the symptoms of common flu!
Both the viral diseases start with the respiratory illness but the question arises here how to identify the former from the latter in the battle of coronavirus vs flu?
Let’s find out on what grounds coronavirus is similar and/or different from influenza or flu!

Coronavirus vs Flu- Fighting COVID-19 in 2020

2. Let’s find out on what grounds coronavirus is similar and/or different from influenza or
flu!
Similarities between Coronavirus & flu
Be it COVID-19 or flu, both cause fever, cough, body aches, fatigue; sometimes vomiting
and diarrhea.
Novel 2019 coronavirus, as well as influenza, can be mild or severe, even fatal in rare
cases.
Both fevers types can result in pneumonia.
Difference between coronavirus and flu
Influenza and novel 2019 coronavirus are similar on few grounds but they are highly
different from one another. Here are the grounds on which COVID-19 differs from flu!
Causes
Coronavirus: Is caused by one virus, the novel 2019 coronavirus, also named as acute
respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2.
Flu: Influenza is caused by any of several different types and strains of influenza viruses,
not specific as compared to COVID-19.
Transmission
Both diseases type can be transmitted in several ways which are similar. A major
difference though can be the airborne property of coronavirus over flu. COVID-19 virus
can remain airborne even after the infected individual has gone far from the infected
position.
Medications
Coronavirus– Medications (antiviral) are continuously being tested to see if they can
address the prevailing symptoms of COVID-19.

3. Flu– Antiviral medications are used to address symptoms and sometimes shorten the
duration of the illness due to influenza or flu.
Vaccination
Coronavirus: At present, there hasn’t been any effective vaccination developed for curing
COVID-19 novel.
Flu: From minor to severe cases of influenza, there are vaccinations available for curing
the flu.
Infected cases
Coronavirus- More than 1,25,000 cases worldwide as of Mar. 12, 2020.*
Flu– Estimated 1 billion cases worldwide per year.
There has been an increase in the number of death trolls due to COVID-19 due to the
unavailability of its vaccine. But it is possible that in the coming months, a cure will be
developed for the same.
Influenza, on the contrary, is curable to a certain extent due to already available antiviral
vaccinations for the same.
Here’s what WHO comments on the outbreak!
Way of transmission of the virus
In both cases, the disease can be spread from person to person.

4. Either through droplets in the air from an infected person coughing, sneezing or
talking, coronavirus as well as influenza can spread both ways.
*COVID-19 might be spread through the airborne route. Tests also have shown it can
survive in the air.
Coronavirus vs flu- Treatment
As far as now, neither COVID- 19 nor flu is treatable with antibiotics.
Both may be treated by addressing symptoms, such as reducing fever.
Severe cases may require hospitalization and mechanical ventilation.
Coronavirus vs flu- Preventive measures
Flu, as well as coronavirus, both may be prevented by following the below preventive
measures:
Frequent, thorough handwashing
Coughing into the crook of your elbow
Staying home when sick
Don’t travel too often
Limiting contact with people who are infected
Waving instead of a handshake
Wearing a mask when outdoors
Avoiding public places which are too crowded
Avoid the infected areas
Cooking at home is healthy
Prevention is better than cure and if we take some precautionary measures, COVID-19 can
be controlled to a certain extent. With these thoughts, it’s a goodbye for now from
