2. Do you think these people
have a preference for their
own culture?
Think to yourselves, 30
seconds
3. Cultural Rebels
• Cultural Rebels generally prefer to
explore other cultures.
• They are involved in the fringes of the
Bohemian* tradition. (*A socially
unconventional person, one particularly
involved in the Arts)
• Stereotypical Hippies created their own
communities, listened to psychedelic
rock, embraced the sexual revolution and
used such drugs as Cannabis and LSD to
explore altered states of consciousness.
4. Cultural Rebels
• These people contradict stereotypes, e.g. A French
person who dislikes snails.
• As much as we may argue that we are all individuals
and have a right to our own preferences, there are still
preferences that are stereotypically expected of us.
• As such, people who deviate from those expectations
may face opposition (or, at least, odd looks) from other
people regardless of which culture you originate from.
• They may even be accused of cultural self-hatred,
even if they have nothing against their cultural
heritage, but see no reason why they should be limited
to preferences within their own culture.
5. Example 1
• The Doctor abandoned his home culture
a very long time ago, and sticks
particularly to the culture of British
people.
• However he tends to blend with
many cultures of the planets he
explores.
• He himself has said that he
doesn’t like the Time lord fashion.
6. Example 2
• In the Sopranos, Vito Spatafore is a
homosexual catholic.
• This is against his culture because
Catholics still classify homosexuality
as a disorder and do not accept it.
