Learnings about technologies from constructing a product
1. 6. What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
Joe Chapman
2. Software used
• Photoshop
• Internet explorer
• Notes (Apple iPod app – used for writing interview with
Lee)
• Microsoft PowerPoint
• Survey Monkey
• SlideShare
• Blogger
• Hotmail
• YouTube
• Microsoft Excel
5. What was optional?
• Blogger- I could have produced my work in a written format at the end
of the project although this would have been very time consuming and
I wouldn't have been able to get everything produced well and quickly.
• Survey Monkey- I could have produced written questionnaires instead
of doing an online survey, this would have maybe brought in more
results for me to analyse although I would have had to photocopy
loads of sheets and with it being on PC I could easily graph the data
• Photoshop- there are many other programmes that could have
assisted in creating a good product such as Adobe InDesign or
Microsoft publisher but I already had little amounts of previous
Photoshop knowledge and I don't think I would have been able to
create as good of a product as I did with Photoshop.
• SlideShare- I could have produced my work in another medium- maybe
as a written format but I chose to use SlideShare as it is the most
professional looking way to get presentations onto my blog and it is
easy to upload and view on not only SlideShare but on my blog.
6. What Tech did I definitely need?
• Internet Explorer- most of my research into
publishers had to be done on the internet as it is
most up to date there, as well as this i could find
out about different magazines available and how
they read and how they look, i could have done
this manually although it would have been very
costly, Although i do buy Kerrang! Weekly and as i
was emulating kerrang! Predominately this was
also helpful, yet without the internet i couldn't
have looked at other styles of magazine and how
well they do in readership and circulation etc.
7. Pros of tech
• Blogger- without the use of blogger i would not have been
able to use my time as effectively, the use of blogger helped
me save time over hand writing all my work or documenting
it all in order, therefore i could spend more time working on
my product and making it look really proffesional.
• Notes- with the use of notes on my iPod i was able to
document the interview with Lee for my double page spread
and then send the note to myself through the email feature,
thus making use of what i had rather than writing it down
then typing it up or using someone else’s laptop
• Survey monkey- with the use of survey monkey i was able to
create multiple questions very quickly and distribute onto
social networks such as facebook and twitter and get instant
results rather than a hand written questionnaire that would
take ages to collect in and process the results.
8. Cons of Tech
• Failure/crashing/breaking- throughout the creation of
my product i encountered several problems, firstly my
memory stick, which had my front cover (completed)
and DPS and Contents (started) on it locked out, so i
couldn't access or save files onto the memory stick,
luckily i saved my product on the computer as a back
up and also sent it to myself via email, Photoshop also
played up for me once as it kept crashing and not
saving my files, this was very frustrating and caused me
to lose time having to sort out these problems.
• Online software also has its down sides as it is available
online and could be used and abused by others over
the internet, meaning that my work could have been
copied or used by people without my consent.
