Sierra Leone Case Study
The shining state of the African Continent was considered, at one point in time, to be the gem of
West Africa. The nation was set up for success with its coastline, rain forest, clean water, arable
lands, and gemstones. The state was originally created as a haven for freed slaves (hints the name of
its capital, Freetown). To find out what went wrong one must ask certain questions. What is the
relevant distribution of power? What are the most important types of power? Who are the significant
actors? What are their interests relevant to the conflict? What are the areas of conflict? Are there
potential areas of compromise? To understand these questions is to understand Sierra Leone.

These plans have been foiled by the British government who, in recent years, have taken an interest
in their ex–colonie and all the latent power it holds. (History, N.D.)
What are the most important types of power? In the case of Sierra Leone the most important type of
power is latent power. Latent power, according to John Mearsheimer, is power that can exist but
does not exist currently (Mearsheimer, 2001). Sierra Leone's latent power is their diamond mines.
The diamond mines of Sierra Leone are some of the largest in Africa. They are mined by both rebels
and civilians alike (Diamonds, 1997). During this time period these domains mined from Sierra
Leone were called blood diamonds. The name given to them because of the lives lost in the many
civil wars they caused.
It is because of these billions of dollars in diamonds (that translate into latent power) that Liberia
heavily funded the rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front. Liberia was attempting to
balance Sierra Leon in their favor. The purpose of this was to achieve control of Sierra Leone latent
power located in their diamond mines. One question that can be raised from this situation is, is latent
power the only power in

What Is The History Of Liberia Involved With America?
I think it is so interesting how the history of Liberia is involved with America. I had no idea that the
American Colonization Society sent freed slaves back to Africa. I cannot fathom what it must have
felt like to be taken as a slave to a country and then return as a free person, but still have your
country's flag resemble the country that enslaved you. The culture of Liberia seams very deep with
the clothes they wear and foods they eat. It is unfortunate to learn that Liberia has no agricultural
education programs in the Liberian Education System. Not teaching the young generations about
agricultural and the importance of it could be detrimental to all of society. Not knowing how to
properly grow crops and raise livestock makes it hard

The Transatlantic Slave Trade Made Africa A Major Market...
In the eighteenth century, slavery was a regularized business in which European
merchants, African traders, and American planters engaged in complex bargaining over
human lives, all with a purpose of securing a profit (Foner, GML, 131). Slave plantations
greatly contributed to massive economic development. The first mass consumer goods
in international trade were produced by slaves, such as sugar, tobacco, rice and coffee
(Foner, GML,132). The high and constant demand for these products quickly fueled
the rapid growth of the Atlantic Slave Trade (Foner, GML, 132). The transatlantic slave
trade made Africa a major market for European goods. Cheap imported textiles
undermined traditional craft production, while guns encouraged the further growth of
slavery, since the only way obtain European weapons was to supply slaves
(Foner,GML, 134). The moment slaves were bought they immediately experienced the
foundations of enslavement in the modern Atlantic World which began in the 1500's and
concluded in 1888, known as chattel enslavement. Chattel enslavement is not only a life
long slavery status that a mother bestows upon her children, but rather a generational
curse which can only be uplifted by death (Dennis, lecture notes). It was crucial for
slaves to be domesticated and stripped from their identities for the reason that race and
economics go hand in hand. When a individual's culture and history is taken away from
them, they are no longer a person but rather an

Environmental Policies of Liberia:
Perspectives from a Socioeconomic Investigation
Liberia, commonly known for diseases such as Ebola and cholera and also known as home to such
notorious figures as Joshua Milton Blahyi, a mass murderer and cannibal, is a nation recovering
from two recent civil wars on the northwest shore of Africa. The total landmass, consisting of
111,369 square kilometers; is roughly the size of the state of Virginia. In addition to having a long
stretch of coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean, about 13% of the landmass is aquatic. With this
in mind, the population density based on June estimates is 4,092,310, per square kilometer of usable

Liberia's Current Environmental Policy
In 2003, Civil war plagued Liberia formed The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA's
mission statement is as follows:
The Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Liberia is the principle authority for
implementing the national environmental policy and sustainable management law for the protection
of natural resources in Liberia. As a commitment to the environment, the Government of Liberia
established the EPA in 2003 under the EPAAct.The Agency became a fully functioning entity in
2006 with a board of directors and Policy Council. As the lead government environment protection
Agency, the EPA has been charged with the executive authority over all environmental activities and
programmes relating to environmental management in Liberia (The National Environmental 2003).
The agency is empowered with a list of 25 functions; none of which seem to be implemented.
Furthermore; it would seem that the agency is currently of little to no use for reasons that will be
addressed later. These reasons are despite the fact that the organization has clearly stated its ultimate
purpose as such:
It is the continuing responsibility of NECOLIB to use all practicable means possible, consistent with
other essential components of national policy, to improve and coordinate government 's plans,
functions, programs and resources to the end that the nation may:

Timely Treatment Of Post Conflict Liberia
The Timely Treatment of Post–Conflict Liberia
Following the end of Liberia's civil war (which was borne out of the relationship of the US and
Samuel Doe, the Liberian people elected a government in a free and fair democratic elections), the
country was in need of the US and other world powers to help stimulate the country's economy and
help rebuild its damaged infrastructure. However, the US basically walked away from Liberia at the
opportune moment leaving Liberia to its own devices and also at the mercy of the Supreme Being to
perform some sort of miracle to rebuild this nation that was once very important to the US during
the Cold War.
Focusing on Liberia's Leaders instead of its People
In concurrence with these two points (Making Common Causes with One Evil–Doer in Order to
Defeat a Greater Evil–Doer and The Timely Treatment of Post–Conflict Liberia) the US has often
developed its foreign policy relative to the leader of a country, rather than the citizenry. Below are
the three leaders that the US developed its foreign policy with:
 Tubman and the United States, 1944–1971
William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman, the 11th president of Liberia and the longest serving president
in Liberian history (almost 28 years), succeeded President Barclay immediately after World War II
when the winds of the Cold War were already blowing across the world. The Soviet Union and
United States turned the continent of Africa into a superpower rivalry playground, in order to

Liberia, A Country For By Former Slaves
Liberia was a country for by former slaves which looked to escape the United States of America's
racist society. Liberia, unlike most of Africa, has a different story since former slaves from the
United States to establish the second black republic in 1847 CE with the help of the United States
government and the American colonization society. The establishment of Liberia was similar to the
establishment Sierre Leone executed by the British Crown in 1787 because they both forcibly
established colonies in an area where thousands already inhabited. Ironically, the same violent
approach to colonization occurred in Africa by those who emerged from colonial status not so long
ago. Although the purpose of Liberia was to establish a country that ... Show more content on

The Portuguese empire possessed strong naval power by the 15th century, which enabled the empire
to start looking abroad to expand their influences. By 1415, the Portuguese had begun their oceanic
voyages in Africa. Their overall purpose was to obtain access to the African gold mines to expand
their markets. As the trade progressed with the Africans, the Portuguese began trading copper, brass,
and other local goods for gold. As a result, the Portuguese began establishing trade post all over
Africa. Additionally, the Portuguese established trade post in the region of Liberia as they looked for
gold to fuel their voyages to the new world. Since the exploration and gold rush by the Portuguese
was successful, by the 16th century the English, the Dutch, Spanish, and French joined the trade
with Africa. Liberia and Sierre Leon became famous for their extensive amount of "Malagueta
pepper, "resulting in their location to be referred as the "Pepper Coast." Likewise, the British and the
Dutch referred to this location as the "Grain Coast," for its excess and great quality grain. The
Europeans had been trading and communicating with Liberia, like all of Africa, since the 15th
century. The communication from the Europeans resulted in a reluctance to sell their land to
American colonist from the tribes who inhabited Liberia. Following the American Revolutionary
War, the British Crown chose to evacuate thousands of free African–American with the purpose of

Analysis Of Helen Cooper's The House At Sugar Beach
Helen Cooper's The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood, tells us a brief
history of Liberia as she tells her story of her family as they escape through the trouble times in
Liberia. During this time Liberia was in a horrifying time as she describes in chapter 13, April 12,
1980, a group of soldiers staged a coup d'état, assassinating President William Tolbert and executing
his cabinet. After this tragic event the Coopers were being hunted. They were being imprisoned,
shot, tortured, and raped. On the night of April 12th, a group of soldiers came into her house and
raped her mother. Shortly after this happen they started to flee Sugar Beach, Liberia and eventually
Cooper, Marlene and their mother moved to America, leaving Eunice behind in Liberia. Although
they were not wealthy anymore, the three of them were safe and happy. After Cooper completed
high school she went to college to become a journalist. In 2003 as a Wall Street journalist, she had a
near death experience while reporting in Iraq. "I shouldn't die here, I thought. What a stupid war to
die in." "If I'm going to die in a war, it should be in my own country. I should die in Liberia." (Pg.
310) After her Humvee was hit, the thought of narrowly escaping death made her realize that she
missed her home country and wanted to remain loyal to her roots. Even after she becomes an
American citizen, Cooper remains devoted to her native country that her ancestors, Elijah Johnson

Lysistrat A Work Of Satire
Although a work of satire, Aristophanes's Lysistrata has inspired countless women to be powerful,
determined leaders and to take charge and make changes when they sense injustice. Lysistrata
contains one of the first descriptions of a sex strike and has undoubtedly influenced the numerous
sex strikes used to achieve peace throughout history. Recent sex strikes undoubtedly influenced by
Lysistrata occurred in Kenya, Colombia (Selzner 2), Iraq, and Sudan (Morales 284), but perhaps the
most interesting of these sex strikes occurred in Liberia in 2003 (Ghitis). There were countless
parallels between the Liberian sex strike and that imagined by Aristophanes, and between the leader
of the Liberian sex strike, Leymah Gbowee, and Lysistrata. The ... Show more content on

Both sides of the civil war were cruel to the Liberian people; there was no clear good side (Morales
283). Leymah Gbowee, a social worker and single mother, brought together women – both Christian
and Muslim – to rally for peace (Morales 286). A sex strike was involved, and ultimately, the
warlords were forced to conduct negotiations and compromise, resulting in peace for Liberia
(Morales 284). This seems like a modern, Liberian version of Lysistrata. Even Gbowee's
relationship status is similar to Lysistrata: they are both not defined by their relationship to a man
and both earned their positions as authority figures for their movements on their own (Morales 286).
Unfortunately, Aristophanes was a satirist and the play was never meant to encourage any peaceful
revolutions or inspire leaders to have sex strikes. The play is a comedy; it mocks women and their
inability to be legitimately involved in politics. The sex strike in Liberia was by no means a joke and
contributed to the bringing of peace to the nation. Despite all of the similarities to Lysistrata, the sex
strike in Liberia is not funny and should not be viewed in any way as a comedy. The warlords and
their troops committed widespread sexual abuse on Liberian females of all ages. Gbowee recalled
that the women thought, "What else do we have to lose? Our bodies are their battlefields: let's just
put our bodies out there" (NPR). The women did not want the war to

called Liberian English. This is because freed American slaves settled Liberia and founded it. Many
people have to speak a mix between Liberian and English. This caused the mix between the two
languages creating Liberian English. Liberia is located in Africa along the western border and lies
almost right on the Equator in the northern and western hemisphere. Liberia's population was
recorded at about 4.294 million people in 2013. It sits on the coast of the south Atlantic coast.

alarming situation leading to the development of research studies in attempt to better understand the
disease and find ways of controlling its spread. One of the most affected countries, Liberia, has been

independent variables, they are clearly identified and the relationship between them is explained.
The dependent variable of the study is identified as the Ebola virus transmission, while two
independent variables are considered to be the viral load and the amount of contacts of an infected
person. This means that infected individuals are more contagious when their viral load is high, thus
the more close contacts they get during that period, the higher the chances are of transmitting the

Pre–Independence History of Liberia
Liberia was a place where freed slaves and free blacks living in America could go to escape the
racism they faced in the United States. When the colonists first settled in, they were attacked by the
indigenous groups who lived there. The colonists also suffered from the harsh climate, suboptimal
housing conditions, lack of food and medicine, and disease. The colonists of African American
descent became known as Americo–Liberians. By the 1840s, the American Colonization Society
was bankrupt and encouraged the Americo–Liberians to proclaim their independence. When they
received independence, the social ranks put the Americo–Liberians at the top, and the indigenous
people at the bottom. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, Liberia had to compete
economically with the European colonies in Africa, the new technology Europe brought drove the
Liberian shipping companies out of business. Eventually the Liberian dollar collapsed in 1907 and
they were forced to use the American dollar. The US constantly ... Show more content on

The Legacy Of Africa Is A Patriarchal Continent
Africa is a patriarchal continent as such it was a big surprise when a women was elected president of
its country, her name is Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; she was born on October 29, 1938, in Monrovia,
which is the capital of Liberia. She was the daughter of a lawyer and a teacher.
She is the president of Liberia, a small West African nation founded by freed American slaves in the
nineteenth century. Sirleaf took office in 2006 as the first democratically elected female president in
Africa even though she enjoyed considerable goodwill at home and abroad, Sirleaf faced an array of
immense problems, the legacy of a devastating civil war (1989–2003) that left 250,000
Liberian, nearly a ten percent of the population, dead and the country 's roads and power plants in
shambles.
Sirleaf got married in 1955 while she was still a teenager to James Sirleaf; they had four children
before they divorced. After her divorce, she graduated from the College of West Africa in Monrovia,
and she received a bachelor 's degree in accounting from the Madison Business College in Madison,
Wisconsin, in addition to a degree in economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder and
Master of Public Administration degree from university of Harvard

Freed Black and White Women in Liberia
In 1822 the American Colonization Society(ACS), emigrated freed black slaves to Liberia located in
West Africa, however, during this time the indigenous had already been living there (Brown,
Education in Liberia, 46). Unfortunately, there is not much information on women in the
colonization. "Scholars have written surprisingly little on the role of women in the movement. The
few historians who have studied women in the colonization movement have examined the rise and
decline of female support in the South" (Younger, Philadelphia Ladies Liberia School Association

Many of them were "distrustful of the ACS's slaveholding leadership, many suspected that the
movement wanted to remove the free black population in order to strengthen slavery and that it was
part of a larger strategy to strip the free black population of its political influence" (Younger,
PLLSA, 242). This mistrust spread rapidly and began to appear on abolitionist newspapers. The
ACS wanted to send free blacks to another country so they wouldn't support freeing other slaves.
This resulted in many riots. "The city witnessed recurring anti abolitionist and race riots during the
1830s and 1840s as fears of immediate abolition spread (Younger, PLLSA, 242)." The most well
known riot that occurred was he burning of Pennsylvania Hall in May of 1838 by a white crowd.
Pennsylvania Hall was where abolitionists held meetings. White people in Pennsylvania usually
didn't involve themselves in these kinds of actions and they were surprised by all the riots and
violence going on. The colonizationialists gained from these riots of the abolitionist activists
rebellions because they "played on white racial fears." Abolitionists were condemned by the the
Presbyterian Synod of Philadelphia who warned that abolishing slavery would "rend the Church and
the Union in twain (Younger, PLLSA, 243)." The church feared that if slavery was abolished then
the Church and the Union would split. Pastors and churches united

In addition to these groups the fifth group is the Americo–Liberians who speak English and are of
American decent. During the civil war, which occurred from 1989 until 2003, the residents that were
of American descent were vilified by the tribal controlled government. This resentment of the
Americo–Liberian people can be attributed to the attempts of President William Tubman to reach
out to all residents of Liberia, including the Americo–Liberians, and extend the basic rights such as
voting. President William Tubman was president of Liberia from 1944 to 1971 when he died while
still in office. President Tubman was one of the most effective presidents in Liberian history. During
his time in office, he fostered a major modernization of the main population centers. During the later
years of World War II, President Tubman strengthened bonds with countries such as the United
States and France. He also attempted to make Liberia self–sufficient on its most important
sustainment crop, rice. Following World War II Liberia experienced an economic boom, caused by
Tubman's open door policy that facilitated streamlined trading with international partners and
allowed Liberia's main exports; rubber and iron, to be sold and exported more freely. This boom
lasted until the late 1960's at which time the international rubber and iron prices started to fall. This

The Colonization Of Africa Is A Significant Reason Why The...
The colonization of Africa is a significant reason why the educational system in Africa is split
between the countries it holds. Between the late 1800s and early 1900s Africa faced many military
annexations and diplomatic conquests. The impact of colonialism has influenced the conflicts in
Liberia that happened in the late 1900s. Liberia 's civil wars held a responsibility for the devastation
that is implicated in its racial stance. Social Darwinism gave support for the superior rule over
Africa. Liberia 's conflicts play a notable role in how westernization of education and race are
viewed throughout Africa. Liberia 's education system emerged because of these conflicts.
Colonizing Africa began between the 1870s–1900. An important tragedy of colonization is the
stripping of ethnicities. Modern Africa is a product of European imperialism, not African heritage
and tradition. Once the profits of the slave trade collapsed, because of its abolition, European
markets were looking for ways to keep a steady way to make profits. Traditionally, Africa had been
divided into groups by tribe, family, clan and lineage. During the process of colonization these
characteristics were social, economic and political. Colonial state formation caused new values,
institutions and operational principles to take place. The African colonization required the taking of
territories that were unknown to the political world. The old views on who would run each group
were diminished by the new rulers

square kilometers and a population of about four million. The capital is Monrovia. The official
language is English and over thirty home–grown languages are also spoken in the country. You may
wonder why I selected this country; I do not know truly myself, but the more I researched about it
the more fascinated I became. I assume that will happen to you, too, to see how far this country has
come. (Forced Migration Online: Liberia, 2011)

have failed to acknowledge. This individual has healed her nation through her philosophy of peace

For more than 15 years, civil war terrorized the lives Liberians all over. Government corruption and
violent rebellions overthrew the country's stability, which in turn evicted thousands of Liberian
citizens from their homes, limited access to food, clean water, and healthcare. It was a common
event for those to see their loved ones slaughtered in front of their eyes due to the chaos that erupted
so often. Sirleaf in her earlier years witnessed these tragedies first hand in her hometown of
Monrovia, Liberia. While serving as an assistant minister of Finance in the former President Charles
Taylor's administration, Sirleaf attempted to discuss with him the problems citizens of Liberia were
experiencing. In her efforts to approach this issue to Taylor, she was exiled for over ten years of
house arrest for treason. Overall in all her attempts she was exiled twice, adding up to over 20 years
and narrowly escaped execution on one of the occasions. During her first 10 year sentence, she

Sexual Boycotts, Documented During The Greek Empire And...
Sex boycotts, documented during the Greek empire and the Peloponnesian war between Athens and
Sparta, have been a traditional interesting non–violent method to resolve conflicts. The Australian
aboriginals community also illustrated the sex boycott as a popular practice. Contemporary
examples in Colombia in 2005 , in the Philippines and in Canada in 2012 confirmed the
vulgarization of the "Lysistrata regime" to achieve social, political and economic goals.
Also aimed to counteract several forms of patriarchal violence and oppression (physical, and/or
psychological), sex strikes could be defined as "method of social non–cooperation" . Understanding
these practises within our male supremacists society is meaningful. Conjointly, ... Show more

"If he is no good in bed, he cannot hunt" and therefore, secure the household.
Again, as Chris Knight mentioned, "the relationship reciprocity which is the basis of marriage is not
established between men and women, but between men by means of women" in which women had
no active role to play. Gender inequalities therefore existed; women were often essentialized to
perform passive roles and their expected duties.
From this postulate, it seems that women especially from the case study following attempted to de–
construct and re–appropriate these assumptions and prejudices. Wisely, they managed to generate a
source of power directly from the source oppression. This reservoir of power has been the "gas" to
organize and to use sex boycott as an alternative political tool.
SEX STRIKES
Sex strikes have a long history; the Lysistra comedy of Aristophanes probably refers to the earliest
example of "sexual subversion" during the Peloponnesian War. This form of "traditional feminism"
could be defined as a non–violent way to ostracize individuals perpetrating violence . It is aimed to
achieve common goals, gender solidarity is a substantial variable and many researches often show
that men are the targeted population . Sex boycott refers to a gendered "distinctive pattern of

Dr. Boris Bizumic's The Republic Of Liberia
The Republic of Liberia was founded in 1847 by the descendants of former slaves in search of the
freedoms and liberties unobtainable in the United States. Their relationship with the established
indigenous population was contentious from the start. The settlers colonized their new home by
dominating economic and political control over the indigenous for 133 years. Some historians
perceive that it was these new settlers, exhibiting ethnocentric tendencies, that ultimately led to a
failed republic and two bloody civil wars. These new settlers from the Americas reached the African
west coast, created a society entrenched in classism, social segregation, and enslavement that
resulted in Liberia becoming one of the poorest countries in the world. ... Show more content on

They clearly made Christianity an entitlement for the privileged Liberian while they disregarded
traditional beliefs and practices of the indigenous ethnic groups. Dr. Bizumic affirms that "having a
unique religion is an important differential characteristic for many ethnic groups, but even when
ethnic groups adopt world religions, such as Christianity, they may adapt them to fit their own ethnic
groups" (Bizumic, B. (2015), p. 6). Sociologist William G. Sumner was the first to define the term
ethnocentrism. He relates "ethnocentrism as tribal or ethnic group egocentrism: "view of things in
which one's own group is the center of everything, and all others are scaled and rated with reference

Liberia Civil War Essay
Liberia was a country founded in 1822 by Americans who wanted to find a place for freed slaves to
settle. Then on July 26, 1847, a new day began in the history of Liberia, it was declared as a freed
and independent nation. Their constitution was formed as a replicate of the United States
government. Liberia had gone through one–hundred and thirty–three years of one party rule, and an
additional twenty–five years of military and dictatorial rule. A civil war broke out for 14 years when
the end of the dictatorship was targeted with violence. This paper focuses on the causes of the civil
war. The causes of the civil war in Liberia can probably be narrowed down to the country's
unresolved ethnic and political viewpoints. We will also highlight

Infant Mortality Rates In Monrovia
Liberia is a tropical nation located in Western Africa. A name that means "land of the free," it is an
ironic example of American colonization in Africa. Founded with a government modeled after that
of the U.S., the country is also represented by a flag carrying a striking resemblance to that of the
American. Originally named Monrovia, now the capital, the country was founded in 1822 by free
slaves, as a response to the economic dependency on slavery that made comfortable life in the U.S.
impossible to achieve. Yet, the descendants of American slaves only comprise about 5% of the
current population while 16 indigenous ethnic groups make up the rest. ("About Liberia," n.d.). The

fighting in the Liberian Civil War on behalf of the LURD soldiers. She took a chance to take control
of her life, as does The Girl, and joined the army in fear of being harmed again and believed that if
she were a soldier and had a gun that nothing like that would happen again. She experienced a
traumatic moment and decided to do everything in her power to not allow it to happen again, just as
The Girl did after she was raped by the CO. Black Diamond's story allows a reader to analyze how
war affects people psychologically and what it leads them to do, no matter how morally unjust, but
out of fear for their own lives. War affects so many women because of men's belief that it is right to
use their ranking in the society to rape and take advantage of any woman they choose. The women
have no way of knowing what is coming next and on a day to day basis and are at the mercy of men
who do not see them as people, do not call them by their names, and do not see them as human. The
constant fear is the most probable reason for joining a cause, despite one's morality, that will
potentially take away some of that fear of the unknown. The Girl is taking control of her life, like

Liberi A Cultural Overview
Liberia: A Cultural Overview Liberia 's political system and history has been strongly based and
influenced on American and English common law. This is due in part to Liberia 's initial
colonization of freed American slaves starting around 1820. Initially 86 immigrants, also known as
"Americo–Liberians" settled in the now named Monrovia, named after President James Monroe. In
the following years thousands more freed slaves and free African–Americans resettled by a
campaign created by the American Colonization Society. The True Whig Party ruled the country and
their first President was Joseph Jenkins Roberts who was born and raised in America. The
government was styled on that of the United States and the indigenous population were restricted
their voting rights by the Americo–Liberian elite. The True Whig Party dominated all sectors of
Liberia from independence in 1847 until April of 1980, when Liberian Master Sergeant Samuel K.
Doe, from the Krahn ethnic group, seized power in a coup d 'etat. To put a formal end to control by
the Americo–Liberian political domination formation of The People's Redemption Council was
necessary. The Doe government saw increased human rights abuses, corruption, and ethnic tensions
and the standard of living in Liberia continued to deteriorate. Doe ensured that he retained close
relations with America; he met twice with President Ronald Reagan and enjoyed considerable
financial support from the United States. From 1989 to 2003,

Conflict Between African Americans And The American...
Arway is a seven–year–old student who has just immigrated to the United States from Monrovia,
Liberia with her family. She comes from one of the most populated cities in Liberia. In the 1800s,
freed African American slaves settled in Liberia via the American Colonization Society. Friction
occurred between the African Americans and the indigenous Liberians which turned into two brutal
civil wars that not only resulted in numerous deaths, but also severely devastated the Liberian
economy. Even though Arway was born after the second civil war ended, her family has experienced
the war and its devastating effects that may have affected their choice to emigrate. Regarding the
society of settlement, Arway may face some similarities and differences culturally. The official and
primary language in Liberia is English, so Arway should not have that many linguistic difficulties.
She may have an accent that is different from her fellow classmates because a majority of Liberians
are bilingual. On the other hand, Liberians traditionally teach their kids through observation and
imitation rather than verbal commands. This may be a little troublesome for Arway, but she should
be able to adapt to American culture easier compared to her family members. Due to Arway's age,
she might undergo assimilation rather than integration. She did not spend a great amount of time in
Liberia compared to her family members. The new American culture may have more of an effect on

The Cold War And The Soviet Union
Abstract:
The Cold War started immediately after World War II, when the two strongest nations (United States
and Soviet Union), considered 'superpowers", decided to present their different ideas about
economics and government.
The War was unlike other wars in that the two sides never clashed directly in battle. Both United
States (US) and Soviet Union (USSR) had several countries as allies. These countries were known
as satellite states or client states of which, Liberia was one.
The United States pressured Liberia to resist the expansion of the Soviet Union's Communist
influence in Africa during the Cold War. Liberian President Tubman was agreeable to this policy.
Between 1946 and 1960 Liberia received some $500 million in unrestricted foreign investments of
which the United States of America was a major donor and donated $280 million in aid to Liberia.
In the 1970s under president Tolbert, Liberia strove for a more non–aligned and independent posture
and established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, China, Cuba and Eastern bloc countries.
It also severed ties with Israel during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, but announced it supported
American involvement in the Vietnam War.
The US Foreign Policy towards Liberia during the Cold War (1944–1990)

in the whole of Africa.

Clench on Political Power
The scholarly consensus is that the establishment of Liberia in 1822 by a philanthropic organization,
the American Colonization Society and leadership structures that were put in place led to political
confrontations in Liberia. Ironically, this conflict was an outcome of the same tensions and
contradictions that existed in the United States between black slaves and their white masters. The
country's nineteen (19) presidents from 1947 to April 12,1980, military coup, were all Americo–

colonization unlike its neighbors of Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. Liberia shared a similar
history with Sierra Leone, in that the two West African neighbors owed their contemporary
existence to the emergence of philanthropic organizations in Europe and the United States that were
eager to find a permanent asylum in Africa for their free Blacks. The American and European

South Afric A Global Issue
There are many poor countries throughout the world that do not have enough money and resources
to support its citizens. There have been many attempts over the past few years to help these
countries get the resources they need. One of the main places non–profit organizations as well as
government organizations send their resources to is West Africa. Liberia is located in West Africa
near the South Atlantic Ocean, and has a population of 4.294 million (Why, World Food). Liberia
was once a rich country, which used to be very profitable, but as time goes on Liberia has started to
crumble little by little (Why). History has a funny way of repeating itself; Liberia is starting to fall
behind, and the Liberian government is not able to support all of its citizens, just like other great
empires and countries throughout history. Now Liberia has made it all the way to number four on
the "Top Ten Poorest Countries in the World" list (Poorest). World hunger is a global issue, but is
most prominent in parts of Africa and Asia; Liberia being one of the many places (Person). A
number of things can cause hunger, but some of the most common reasons are the lack of money,
the lack of resources, and the incapability of trading goods. Though the causes of world hunger in
Liberia are economical, the effects are mostly social. All countries have one goal: their goal is to be
the most powerful and most successful country in the world. Liberia was successful at its peak, but

Leadership Is A Complex Phenomenon Involving The Leader,...
Hughes et al. (2012) states that leadership is a complex phenomenon involving the leader, followers,
and the situation. Leadership is and has been very important at all levels of life. Not everyone has
the power to influence, the integrity, the ethics and the motivation to undertake tasks whether they
are simple and basic or complicated and advanced. One leadership researcher defines leadership as
"the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals" (Hughes et al.
2012). With that being said, Leaders need power to influence others and the ability to empower
others. All great leaders start with a vision, and inspires people to engage with that vision as well as
they are very efficient in developing, innovating, inspiring and motivating by coaching the team
towards achieving the vision.

Civil War And The American Colonization
Liberia has always been under pressure, similar to other countries. At first, the establishment of
Liberia in 1822 with the reinforcement of the American Colonization Society may have seemed like
a pleasant time. The American Colonization Society's enterprise was for liberated black slaves to
immigrate to Africa. In general, this wasn't an appalling event along with the time when Liberia was
observed as independent by the United States of America in 1862. Although the discovery and
foundation of Liberia is essential and positive, Liberia is still like a rose with thorns. Underneath the
beauty of Liberia were grotesque misfortunes. In particular, these hardships were the civil war and

Moreover, the profit earned from iron ore, which composes ⅔ of the country's proceeds, and
agriculture plummeted. As a result from combat, agricultural equipment was robbed and citizens
relocated to rural regions, hence the cultivation of crops was a challenge for Liberians to build up.
Not only did the income value decrease, but medical foundations were ravaged, which led to a
majority of patient diseases such as the measles. Furthermore, indigenous Liberians were unable to
learn due to damaged educational infrastructures. In order to solve these issues, $7.5 billion was
contributed to Liberia for reconstruction by Commonwealth Gold. Together with the
Commonwealth Gold, United Nations Food for Agriculture, European Union, and non–
governmental organizations granted seeds, equipment, and lessons on beneficial farming methods.
Despite having the support of organizations, something else is still broken in Liberia: human rights.
Unluckily, Liberia isn't as absolved and protective compared to countries such as the United States
of America, therefore Liberians have less rights and are most likely to be a or be considered a victim

It is commonly known for its incredibly slow enforcement ability. Many claim that war criminals
felt fearless during the investigation due to the lack of resources and infrastructure the commission
had. The TRC of Liberia dealt with some of the usual problems associate with TRC's, that is they
"often promise to achieve more than the allocated time and resources allow," (Raddatz, pg. 1–18).
This was very apparent in Liberia as a long list of goals were hoped to be achieved by the TRC.
Over the three years the commission was investigating, many began to lose faith and question its
reputation. Things started off rocky, "the TRC sought to collect statements from one percent of the
country's population, or approximately 35,000 people. By the end of 2007, despite serious capacity
constraints, the Commission had collected and processed over 17,000 statements," (Raddatz, pg. 1–
18), far less than what was originally promised. The commission also reportedly faced challenges
from within, "infighting, mistrust across the board, among committee members, between they and
the government, they and the UN, they and members of the international community," (Raddatz, pg.
1–18). In the end, the TRC's final report was considered a practical pursuit for Liberians.
Government officials of Liberia today believe it has changed the political landscape for good. Real
problems still surround the report and how it handles victims and war criminals. The entirety of the

Brumskine's party goals include creating jobs, investing in infrastructure, reconciling the people,
ensuring the rule of law, and fighting corruption (Liberty Party Liberia 2017). The issues the people
of Liberia are voting on are highly connected to the study of contemporary African politics. A
cornerstone of African politics is the history it is built on. The country of Liberia is still impacted by
past colonial rule, civil war, and poor governance. All of these are common for countries in Africa. A
second important African election comes in the country of Rwanda. President Paul Kagame recently
won a third, seven–year term. He won with a 99 percent margin of victory (Baddorf 2017). His
opponent was Frank Habineza, of the Democratic Green Party. Habineza placed importance in
environmental protections and allowing freedom of expression (afp 2017). Kagame's platform,
though sparse, vowed to strengthen the economy. Kagame's victory is tied to contemporary study of
African politics in many ways. Kagame is an excellent example of a leader whose personality has
won him elections, resulting in elections for cult of personality rather than policy. Kagame is
credited with assisting in ending the Rwandan genocide by leading rebel forces (Baddorf 2017).

The Field Of Journalism And The Civil War Essay
The field of journalism is a necessity because there is always a story to narrate, and ultimately
history that needs to be documented. Many fail to recognize the importance of journalist, their roles
to communities nationwide and the life threatening risks the job may acquire. We often perceive the
pros of journalism which is a good thing, but we tend to neglect what journalists may have to
undergo to acquire the right facts and different parts of an important story. Journalists around the
world have encountered dangerous moments in their careers where they had to report on stories that
demanded integrating themselves into a threatening situation such as war. This statement definitely
holds true to Journalism in Liberia during the civil war.
Liberia is a democratic nation and their laws are modeled after the United States. One significant
law that protects journalist in Liberia is the first Amendment which states that one has the right to
freedom of speech. However, during Liberia's civil war many journalists struggled to report what
was occurring in the country because of strong dictating leaders and governmental powers. Under
their power, journalist was threatened, harmed, harassed, murdered or even put in jail if they
attempted to expose the harsh realities of the civil war.

most Liberians had to deal with on a daily basis, due to the problems forced upon them that they had
to attempt to solve as individuals not as a country. But these problems were caused by an already
weakening system that was waiting to be toppled, taken advantage of and destroyed. Many

First, group members must perceive that they are part of a team and that they all have a common

that all members will share the group's success or failure. Third, to accomplish the group's goal, all
students must talk with one another–––to discuss all problems. Finally, it must be clear to all that
each member's individual work has a direct effect on the group's success. Teamwork is important.

Conflict Of African Tribal Descent
Today Liberia is a recovering and thriving nation in Western–Africa. It was created by a movement
from the United States in the 1840's that allowed freed slaves the opportunity to move to Africa to
attempt to make a life in a more accepting environment. Liberia has a very eventful history to
include events such as a civil war, coups, being the first independent nation in Africa, and also
elected one of the first female presidents in Africa. The topics that will be covered will be a culture
outline of Liberia, a breakdown of Liberia's diverse population, a description of their government
and economy, and an overview of their military. Liberia is a country with a rich history and culture.
Liberia is predominantly inhabited by people of African tribal descent, although a small number of
the population, about five percent, are what the locals refer to as "Americo–Liberians" referring to
their American descent. According to Horan (n.d.) the Liberian population is broken up into five
ethnolinguistic groups: The Mel (West Atlantic) group consists of the Gola and Kissi, who are
believed to be the oldest inhabitants. The Mande group, made up of Mandingo, Vai, Gbandi, Kpelle,
Loma, Mende, Gio, and Mano peoples, is believed to have entered the area from the northern
savannahs in the fifteenth century. The southern and eastern areas are inhabited by people who
speak Kruan (Kwa) languages; the Bassa, Dei (Dey), Grebo, Kru, Belle (Kuwaa), Krahn, and Gbee

Sierra Leone's Power Struggles and Latent Resources

  • 1. Sierra Leone Case Study The shining state of the African Continent was considered, at one point in time, to be the gem of West Africa. The nation was set up for success with its coastline, rain forest, clean water, arable lands, and gemstones. The state was originally created as a haven for freed slaves (hints the name of its capital, Freetown). To find out what went wrong one must ask certain questions. What is the relevant distribution of power? What are the most important types of power? Who are the significant actors? What are their interests relevant to the conflict? What are the areas of conflict? Are there potential areas of compromise? To understand these questions is to understand Sierra Leone. What is the relevant distribution of power? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These plans have been foiled by the British government who, in recent years, have taken an interest in their ex–colonie and all the latent power it holds. (History, N.D.) What are the most important types of power? In the case of Sierra Leone the most important type of power is latent power. Latent power, according to John Mearsheimer, is power that can exist but does not exist currently (Mearsheimer, 2001). Sierra Leone's latent power is their diamond mines. The diamond mines of Sierra Leone are some of the largest in Africa. They are mined by both rebels and civilians alike (Diamonds, 1997). During this time period these domains mined from Sierra Leone were called blood diamonds. The name given to them because of the lives lost in the many civil wars they caused. It is because of these billions of dollars in diamonds (that translate into latent power) that Liberia heavily funded the rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front. Liberia was attempting to balance Sierra Leon in their favor. The purpose of this was to achieve control of Sierra Leone latent power located in their diamond mines. One question that can be raised from this situation is, is latent power the only power in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. What Is The History Of Liberia Involved With America? I think it is so interesting how the history of Liberia is involved with America. I had no idea that the American Colonization Society sent freed slaves back to Africa. I cannot fathom what it must have felt like to be taken as a slave to a country and then return as a free person, but still have your country's flag resemble the country that enslaved you. The culture of Liberia seams very deep with the clothes they wear and foods they eat. It is unfortunate to learn that Liberia has no agricultural education programs in the Liberian Education System. Not teaching the young generations about agricultural and the importance of it could be detrimental to all of society. Not knowing how to properly grow crops and raise livestock makes it hard ... • 9. The Transatlantic Slave Trade Made Africa A Major Market... In the eighteenth century, slavery was a regularized business in which European merchants, African traders, and American planters engaged in complex bargaining over human lives, all with a purpose of securing a profit (Foner, GML, 131). Slave plantations greatly contributed to massive economic development. The first mass consumer goods in international trade were produced by slaves, such as sugar, tobacco, rice and coffee (Foner, GML,132). The high and constant demand for these products quickly fueled the rapid growth of the Atlantic Slave Trade (Foner, GML, 132). The transatlantic slave trade made Africa a major market for European goods. Cheap imported textiles undermined traditional craft production, while guns encouraged the further growth of slavery, since the only way obtain European weapons was to supply slaves (Foner,GML, 134). The moment slaves were bought they immediately experienced the foundations of enslavement in the modern Atlantic World which began in the 1500's and concluded in 1888, known as chattel enslavement. Chattel enslavement is not only a life long slavery status that a mother bestows upon her children, but rather a generational curse which can only be uplifted by death (Dennis, lecture notes). It was crucial for slaves to be domesticated and stripped from their identities for the reason that race and economics go hand in hand. When a individual's culture and history is taken away from them, they are no longer a person but rather an

Environmental Policies of Liberia: Perspectives from a Socioeconomic Investigation Liberia, commonly known for diseases such as Ebola and cholera and also known as home to such notorious figures as Joshua Milton Blahyi, a mass murderer and cannibal, is a nation recovering from two recent civil wars on the northwest shore of Africa. The total landmass, consisting of 111,369 square kilometers; is roughly the size of the state of Virginia. In addition to having a long stretch of coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean, about 13% of the landmass is aquatic. With this in mind, the population density based on June estimates is 4,092,310, per square kilometer of usable landmass, which equates to about 43 persons per square kilometer of usable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Liberia's Current Environmental Policy In 2003, Civil war plagued Liberia formed The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA's mission statement is as follows: The Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Liberia is the principle authority for implementing the national environmental policy and sustainable management law for the protection of natural resources in Liberia. As a commitment to the environment, the Government of Liberia established the EPA in 2003 under the EPAAct.The Agency became a fully functioning entity in 2006 with a board of directors and Policy Council. As the lead government environment protection Agency, the EPA has been charged with the executive authority over all environmental activities and programmes relating to environmental management in Liberia (The National Environmental 2003). The agency is empowered with a list of 25 functions; none of which seem to be implemented. Furthermore; it would seem that the agency is currently of little to no use for reasons that will be addressed later. These reasons are despite the fact that the organization has clearly stated its ultimate purpose as such: It is the continuing responsibility of NECOLIB to use all practicable means possible, consistent with other essential components of national policy, to improve and coordinate government 's plans, functions, programs and resources to the end that the nation may: 1.Fulfill the ... Timely Treatment Of Post Conflict Liberia The Timely Treatment of Post–Conflict Liberia Following the end of Liberia's civil war (which was borne out of the relationship of the US and Samuel Doe, the Liberian people elected a government in a free and fair democratic elections), the country was in need of the US and other world powers to help stimulate the country's economy and help rebuild its damaged infrastructure. However, the US basically walked away from Liberia at the opportune moment leaving Liberia to its own devices and also at the mercy of the Supreme Being to perform some sort of miracle to rebuild this nation that was once very important to the US during the Cold War. Focusing on Liberia's Leaders instead of its People In concurrence with these two points (Making Common Causes with One Evil–Doer in Order to Defeat a Greater Evil–Doer and The Timely Treatment of Post–Conflict Liberia) the US has often developed its foreign policy relative to the leader of a country, rather than the citizenry. Below are the three leaders that the US developed its foreign policy with:  Tubman and the United States, 1944–1971 William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman, the 11th president of Liberia and the longest serving president in Liberian history (almost 28 years), succeeded President Barclay immediately after World War II when the winds of the Cold War were already blowing across the world. Liberia, unlike most of Africa, has a different story since former slaves from the United States to establish the second black republic in 1847 CE with the help of the United States government and the American colonization society. The establishment of Liberia was similar to the establishment Sierre Leone executed by the British Crown in 1787 because they both forcibly established colonies in an area where thousands already inhabited. Ironically, the same violent approach to colonization occurred in Africa by those who emerged from colonial status not so long ago. Although the purpose of Liberia was to establish a country that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Portuguese empire possessed strong naval power by the 15th century, which enabled the empire to start looking abroad to expand their influences. By 1415, the Portuguese had begun their oceanic voyages in Africa. Their overall purpose was to obtain access to the African gold mines to expand their markets. As the trade progressed with the Africans, the Portuguese began trading copper, brass, and other local goods for gold. As a result, the Portuguese began establishing trade post all over Africa. Additionally, the Portuguese established trade post in the region of Liberia as they looked for gold to fuel their voyages to the new world. Since the exploration and gold rush by the Portuguese was successful, by the 16th century the English, the Dutch, Spanish, and French joined the trade with Africa. Liberia and Sierre Leon became famous for their extensive amount of "Malagueta pepper, "resulting in their location to be referred as the "Pepper Coast." Likewise, the British and the Dutch referred to this location as the "Grain Coast," for its excess and great quality grain. The Europeans had been trading and communicating with Liberia, like all of Africa, since the 15th century. The communication from the Europeans resulted in a reluctance to sell their land to American colonist from the tribes who inhabited Liberia. Analysis Of Helen Cooper's The House At Sugar Beach Helen Cooper's The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood, tells us a brief history of Liberia as she tells her story of her family as they escape through the trouble times in Liberia. During this time Liberia was in a horrifying time as she describes in chapter 13, April 12, 1980, a group of soldiers staged a coup d'état, assassinating President William Tolbert and executing his cabinet. After this tragic event the Coopers were being hunted. They were being imprisoned, shot, tortured, and raped. On the night of April 12th, a group of soldiers came into her house and raped her mother. Shortly after this happen they started to flee Sugar Beach, Liberia and eventually Cooper, Marlene and their mother moved to America, leaving Eunice behind in Liberia. Although they were not wealthy anymore, the three of them were safe and happy. After Cooper completed high school she went to college to become a journalist. In 2003 as a Wall Street journalist, she had a near death experience while reporting in Iraq. "I shouldn't die here, I thought. What a stupid war to die in." "If I'm going to die in a war, it should be in my own country. I should die in Liberia." (Pg. 310) After her Humvee was hit, the thought of narrowly escaping death made her realize that she missed her home country and wanted to remain loyal to her roots. • 34. Lysistrat A Work Of Satire Although a work of satire, Aristophanes's Lysistrata has inspired countless women to be powerful, determined leaders and to take charge and make changes when they sense injustice. Lysistrata contains one of the first descriptions of a sex strike and has undoubtedly influenced the numerous sex strikes used to achieve peace throughout history. Recent sex strikes undoubtedly influenced by Lysistrata occurred in Kenya, Colombia (Selzner 2), Iraq, and Sudan (Morales 284), but perhaps the most interesting of these sex strikes occurred in Liberia in 2003 (Ghitis). There were countless parallels between the Liberian sex strike and that imagined by Aristophanes, and between the leader of the Liberian sex strike, Leymah Gbowee, and Lysistrata. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both sides of the civil war were cruel to the Liberian people; there was no clear good side (Morales 283). Leymah Gbowee, a social worker and single mother, brought together women – both Christian and Muslim – to rally for peace (Morales 286). A sex strike was involved, and ultimately, the warlords were forced to conduct negotiations and compromise, resulting in peace for Liberia (Morales 284). This seems like a modern, Liberian version of Lysistrata. Even Gbowee's relationship status is similar to Lysistrata: they are both not defined by their relationship to a man and both earned their positions as authority figures for their movements on their own (Morales 286). Unfortunately, Aristophanes was a satirist and the play was never meant to encourage any peaceful revolutions or inspire leaders to have sex strikes. The play is a comedy; it mocks women and their inability to be legitimately involved in politics. The sex strike in Liberia was by no means a joke and contributed to the bringing of peace to the nation. Despite all of the similarities to Lysistrata, the sex strike in Liberia is not funny and should not be viewed in any way as a comedy. The warlords and their troops committed widespread sexual abuse on Liberian females of all ages. Gbowee recalled that the women thought, "What else do we have to lose? Our bodies are their battlefields: let's just put our bodies out there" (NPR). The women did not want the war to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some unique foods made in Liberia are from very old recipes and they have many histories and traditions. Liberian rice bread is one of the most traditional foods you can eat in Liberia. It is most commonly used as a snack or even a light side in some cases. Another major meal to eat in Liberia is what they call Jollof Rice. Jollof Rice is a spicy and red rice dish loved in every city and town along the coast of West Africa. Jollof Rice contains many home grown ingredients such as rice, tomatoes, onions, scotch bonnet peppers and spices. Many believe that Jollof Rice was combined with endemic food like tomatoes to help create the perfect taste. In Senegal, its home, Jollof Rice doesn't go by it's name. (2015) "Effect of Ebola Progression on Transmission and Control in Liberia" The Ebola outbreak of 2014 in West Africa with its devastating outcomes has been a worldwide alarming situation leading to the development of research studies in attempt to better understand the disease and find ways of controlling its spread. One of the most affected countries, Liberia, has been the subject of a research study conducted by doctors and epidemiologists of Yale University in Connecticut. Such research focused on investigating the influence of disease progression on transmission and fatality, as well as actions to take in effort to reduce transmission rates (Yamin et al., 2015). These sources provided a through, up to date information to the authors for this item. In regards to dependent and independent variables, they are clearly identified and the relationship between them is explained. The dependent variable of the study is identified as the Ebola virus transmission, while two independent variables are considered to be the viral load and the amount of contacts of an infected person. This means that infected individuals are more contagious when their viral load is high, thus the more close contacts they get during that period, the higher the chances are of transmitting the ... • 46. History Of Liberia Research Paper Pre–Independence History of Liberia Liberia was a place where freed slaves and free blacks living in America could go to escape the racism they faced in the United States. When the colonists first settled in, they were attacked by the indigenous groups who lived there. The colonists also suffered from the harsh climate, suboptimal housing conditions, lack of food and medicine, and disease. The colonists of African American descent became known as Americo–Liberians. By the 1840s, the American Colonization Society was bankrupt and encouraged the Americo–Liberians to proclaim their independence. When they received independence, the social ranks put the Americo–Liberians at the top, and the indigenous people at the bottom. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, Liberia had to compete economically with the European colonies in Africa, the new technology Europe brought drove the Liberian shipping companies out of business. Eventually the Liberian dollar collapsed in 1907 and they were forced to use the American dollar. The US constantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, there is not much information on women in the colonization. "Scholars have written surprisingly little on the role of women in the movement. This mistrust spread rapidly and began to appear on abolitionist newspapers. The ACS wanted to send free blacks to another country so they wouldn't support freeing other slaves. This resulted in many riots. "The city witnessed recurring anti abolitionist and race riots during the 1830s and 1840s as fears of immediate abolition spread (Younger, PLLSA, 242)." The most well known riot that occurred was he burning of Pennsylvania Hall in May of 1838 by a white crowd. Pennsylvania Hall was where abolitionists held meetings. White people in Pennsylvania usually didn't involve themselves in these kinds of actions and they were surprised by all the riots and violence going on. The colonizationialists gained from these riots of the abolitionist activists rebellions because they "played on white racial fears." In addition to these groups the fifth group is the Americo–Liberians who speak English and are of American decent. During the civil war, which occurred from 1989 until 2003, the residents that were of American descent were vilified by the tribal controlled government. This resentment of the Americo–Liberian people can be attributed to the attempts of President William Tubman to reach out to all residents of Liberia, including the Americo–Liberians, and extend the basic rights such as voting. President William Tubman was president of Liberia from 1944 to 1971 when he died while still in office. President Tubman was one of the most effective presidents in Liberian history. During his time in office, he fostered a major modernization of the main population centers. During the later years of World War II, President Tubman strengthened bonds with countries such as the United States and France. He also attempted to make Liberia self–sufficient on its most important sustainment crop, rice. Following World War II Liberia experienced an economic boom, caused by Tubman's open door policy that facilitated streamlined trading with international partners and allowed Liberia's main exports; rubber and iron, to be sold and exported more freely. This boom lasted until the late 1960's at which time the international rubber and iron prices started to fall. This led to the halt of the economic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. The Colonization Of Africa Is A Significant Reason Why The... The colonization of Africa is a significant reason why the educational system in Africa is split between the countries it holds. Between the late 1800s and early 1900s Africa faced many military annexations and diplomatic conquests. The impact of colonialism has influenced the conflicts in Liberia that happened in the late 1900s. Liberia 's civil wars held a responsibility for the devastation that is implicated in its racial stance. Social Darwinism gave support for the superior rule over Africa. Liberia 's conflicts play a notable role in how westernization of education and race are viewed throughout Africa. Liberia 's education system emerged because of these conflicts. Colonizing Africa began between the 1870s–1900. An important tragedy of colonization is the stripping of ethnicities. Modern Africa is a product of European imperialism, not African heritage and tradition. Once the profits of the slave trade collapsed, because of its abolition, European markets were looking for ways to keep a steady way to make profits. Traditionally, Africa had been divided into groups by tribe, family, clan and lineage. During the process of colonization these characteristics were social, economic and political. Colonial state formation caused new values, institutions and operational principles to take place. The African colonization required the taking of territories that were unknown to the political world. The old views on who would run each group were diminished by the new rulers ... The settlers colonized their new home by dominating economic and political control over the indigenous for 133 years. Some historians perceive that it was these new settlers, exhibiting ethnocentric tendencies, that ultimately led to a failed republic and two bloody civil wars. This is due in part to Liberia 's initial colonization of freed American slaves starting around 1820. Initially 86 immigrants, also known as "Americo–Liberians" settled in the now named Monrovia, named after President James Monroe. In the following years thousands more freed slaves and free African–Americans resettled by a campaign created by the American Colonization Society. The True Whig Party ruled the country and their first President was Joseph Jenkins Roberts who was born and raised in America. The government was styled on that of the United States and the indigenous population were restricted their voting rights by the Americo–Liberian elite. The True Whig Party dominated all sectors of Liberia from independence in 1847 until April of 1980, when Liberian Master Sergeant Samuel K. Doe, from the Krahn ethnic group, seized power in a coup d 'etat. To put a formal end to control by the Americo–Liberian political domination formation of The People's Redemption Council was necessary. The Doe government saw increased human rights abuses, corruption, and ethnic tensions and the standard of living in Liberia continued to deteriorate. She comes from one of the most populated cities in Liberia. In the 1800s, freed African American slaves settled in Liberia via the American Colonization Society. Friction occurred between the African Americans and the indigenous Liberians which turned into two brutal civil wars that not only resulted in numerous deaths, but also severely devastated the Liberian economy. Even though Arway was born after the second civil war ended, her family has experienced the war and its devastating effects that may have affected their choice to emigrate. Regarding the society of settlement, Arway may face some similarities and differences culturally. The official and primary language in Liberia is English, so Arway should not have that many linguistic difficulties. She may have an accent that is different from her fellow classmates because a majority of Liberians are bilingual. On the other hand, Liberians traditionally teach their kids through observation and imitation rather than verbal commands. This may be a little troublesome for Arway, but she should be able to adapt to American culture easier compared to her family members. • 114. The Cold War And The Soviet Union Abstract: The Cold War started immediately after World War II, when the two strongest nations (United States and Soviet Union), considered 'superpowers", decided to present their different ideas about economics and government. The War was unlike other wars in that the two sides never clashed directly in battle. Both United States (US) and Soviet Union (USSR) had several countries as allies. These countries were known as satellite states or client states of which, Liberia was one. The United States pressured Liberia to resist the expansion of the Soviet Union's Communist influence in Africa during the Cold War. Liberian President Tubman was agreeable to this policy. Between 1946 and 1960 Liberia received some $500 million in unrestricted foreign investments of which the United States of America was a major donor and donated $280 million in aid to Liberia. In the 1970s under president Tolbert, Liberia strove for a more non–aligned and independent posture and established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, China, Cuba and Eastern bloc countries. It also severed ties with Israel during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, but announced it supported American involvement in the Vietnam War. The US Foreign Policy towards Liberia during the Cold War (1944–1990) Since the end of the slave trade the United States of America and Liberia has been the closest allies in the whole of Africa. Clench On Political Power: Liberia CHAPTER THREE: FOUNDING FACTORS TO LIBERIA'S PROBLEM Clench on Political Power The scholarly consensus is that the establishment of Liberia in 1822 by a philanthropic organization, the American Colonization Society and leadership structures that were put in place led to political confrontations in Liberia. Ironically, this conflict was an outcome of the same tensions and contradictions that existed in the United States between black slaves and their white masters. The country's nineteen (19) presidents from 1947 to April 12,1980, military coup, were all Americo– Liberian and none was an indigenous Liberian. Further, eleven (11) of the nineteen (19) presidents were actually born in the United States of America. (b) Until 1984, Liberia boasted of being the oldest de facto one political party system that worked in Africa, as the then ruling True Whig Party (TWP) had been in power continuously since 1877 to 1980. (c) Liberia was the only country in Africa that did not experience a European style of colonization unlike its neighbors of Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. Liberia shared a similar history with Sierra Leone, in that the two West African neighbors owed their contemporary existence to the emergence of philanthropic organizations in Europe and the United States that were eager to find a permanent asylum in Africa for their free Blacks. The American and European politicians felt that the "freed men of color" as they were called, had become a serious social and economic burden on the white dominated society of Europe and the United States. • 122. South Afric A Global Issue There are many poor countries throughout the world that do not have enough money and resources to support its citizens. There have been many attempts over the past few years to help these countries get the resources they need. One of the main places non–profit organizations as well as government organizations send their resources to is West Africa. Liberia is located in West Africa near the South Atlantic Ocean, and has a population of 4.294 million (Why, World Food). Liberia was once a rich country, which used to be very profitable, but as time goes on Liberia has started to crumble little by little (Why). History has a funny way of repeating itself; Liberia is starting to fall behind, and the Liberian government is not able to support all of its citizens, just like other great empires and countries throughout history. Now Liberia has made it all the way to number four on the "Top Ten Poorest Countries in the World" list (Poorest). World hunger is a global issue, but is most prominent in parts of Africa and Asia; Liberia being one of the many places (Person). A number of things can cause hunger, but some of the most common reasons are the lack of money, the lack of resources, and the incapability of trading goods. Though the causes of world hunger in Liberia are economical, the effects are mostly social. All countries have one goal: their goal is to be the most powerful and most successful country in the world. Liberia was successful at its peak, but eventually its glory ... • 126. Leadership Is A Complex Phenomenon Involving The Leader,... Hughes et al. (2012) states that leadership is a complex phenomenon involving the leader, followers, and the situation. Leadership is and has been very important at all levels of life. Not everyone has the power to influence, the integrity, the ethics and the motivation to undertake tasks whether they are simple and basic or complicated and advanced. One leadership researcher defines leadership as "the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals" (Hughes et al. 2012). With that being said, Leaders need power to influence others and the ability to empower others. All great leaders start with a vision, and inspires people to engage with that vision as well as they are very efficient in developing, innovating, inspiring and motivating by coaching the team towards achieving the vision. The Leader – President Ellen Johnson–Sirleaf Leader Background Ellen Johnson–Sirleaf is the 24th and the present President of Liberia. Born on October 29, 1938, with mixed Gola and German heritage, Johnson–Sirleaf was educated at the College of West Africa in Monrovia and in the United States before serving in the government of Liberia. Samuel Doe, an army sergeant who represented the Krahn ethnic group and who later became the first indigenous Liberian head of state, sent Johnson–Sirleaf into exile in 1980 in a military coup lead. President Johnson–Sirleaf returned to Liberia in 1985, ran for a seat in the local Senate and was sentenced to ten (10) years in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 130. Civil War And The American Colonization Liberia has always been under pressure, similar to other countries. At first, the establishment of Liberia in 1822 with the reinforcement of the American Colonization Society may have seemed like a pleasant time. The American Colonization Society's enterprise was for liberated black slaves to immigrate to Africa. In general, this wasn't an appalling event along with the time when Liberia was observed as independent by the United States of America in 1862. Although the discovery and foundation of Liberia is essential and positive, Liberia is still like a rose with thorns. Underneath the beauty of Liberia were grotesque misfortunes. In particular, these hardships were the civil war and revolution, violations of human rights, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the profit earned from iron ore, which composes ⅔ of the country's proceeds, and agriculture plummeted. As a result from combat, agricultural equipment was robbed and citizens relocated to rural regions, hence the cultivation of crops was a challenge for Liberians to build up. Not only did the income value decrease, but medical foundations were ravaged, which led to a majority of patient diseases such as the measles. Furthermore, indigenous Liberians were unable to learn due to damaged educational infrastructures. In order to solve these issues, $7.5 billion was contributed to Liberia for reconstruction by Commonwealth Gold. Together with the Commonwealth Gold, United Nations Food for Agriculture, European Union, and non– governmental organizations granted seeds, equipment, and lessons on beneficial farming methods. Despite having the support of organizations, something else is still broken in Liberia: human rights. Unluckily, Liberia isn't as absolved and protective compared to countries such as the United States of America, therefore Liberians have less rights and are most likely to be a or be considered a victim as a citizen in Liberia. First, sexual violence, especially rape, pursuits were unjustified because of unclear evidence and inadequacy in the judicial section as well as witnesses. Fortunately, the Criminal Court ... Woman who had suffered gender based violence during the civil war did not receive assistance under the origin DDR programs. The programs were mainly for child militants, and girls over eighteen who were victimized were excluded from participation. An indisputable atrocity for those woman who did fall victim. Reports in recent years show that Liberian woman have been receiving increasingly better assistance through supportive organizations that specialize in providing quality female care. It is commonly known for its incredibly slow enforcement ability. Many claim that war criminals felt fearless during the investigation due to the lack of resources and infrastructure the commission had. The TRC of Liberia dealt with some of the usual problems associate with TRC's, that is they "often promise to achieve more than the allocated time and resources allow," (Raddatz, pg. 1–18). This was very apparent in Liberia as a long list of goals were hoped to be achieved by the TRC. Over the three years the commission was investigating, many began to lose faith and question its reputation. Things started off rocky, "the TRC sought to collect statements from one percent of the country's population, or approximately 35,000 people. By the end of 2007, despite serious capacity constraints, the Commission had collected and processed over 17,000 statements," (Raddatz, pg. 1– 18), far less than what was originally promised. The commission also reportedly faced challenges from within, "infighting, mistrust across the board, among committee members, between they and the government, they and the UN, they and members of the international community," (Raddatz, pg. 1–18). In the end, the TRC's final report was considered a practical pursuit for Liberians. Government officials of Liberia today believe it has changed the political landscape for good. Real problems still surround the report and how it handles victims and war criminals. The entirety of the report is honest in its integrity to seek truth for the people of Liberia. • 138. The Election In The Election Of Liberia's Election Liberia's 2017 election is set to be the first democratic transfer of power in decades (Pailey 2017). The election came after Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former president, was unable to run because of constitutionally mandated term limits. The pool of candidates shrunk from over one thousand to three top candidates recently, with the runoff election being postponed for the time being. The three candidates to remain are George Weah, of Weah's Coalition for Democratic Change, Joseph Boakai, Vice President, and Charles Brumskine of the Liberty Party. In the first vote, Weah received 39 percent of the vote, Boakai 29 percent, and Brumskine 10 percent. Candidates need over 50 percent to win in the first round, thus the run off. Brumskine's party goals include creating jobs, investing in infrastructure, reconciling the people, ensuring the rule of law, and fighting corruption (Liberty Party Liberia 2017). The issues the people of Liberia are voting on are highly connected to the study of contemporary African politics. A cornerstone of African politics is the history it is built on. The country of Liberia is still impacted by past colonial rule, civil war, and poor governance. All of these are common for countries in Africa. A second important African election comes in the country of Rwanda. President Paul Kagame recently won a third, seven–year term. He won with a 99 percent margin of victory (Baddorf 2017). His opponent was Frank Habineza, of the Democratic Green Party. Habineza placed importance in environmental protections and allowing freedom of expression (afp 2017). Kagame's platform, though sparse, vowed to strengthen the economy. Kagame's victory is tied to contemporary study of African politics in many ways. Kagame is an excellent example of a leader whose personality has won him elections, resulting in elections for cult of personality rather than policy. Kagame is credited with assisting in ending the Rwandan genocide by leading rebel forces (Baddorf 2017). • 142. The Field Of Journalism And The Civil War Essay The field of journalism is a necessity because there is always a story to narrate, and ultimately history that needs to be documented. Many fail to recognize the importance of journalist, their roles to communities nationwide and the life threatening risks the job may acquire. We often perceive the pros of journalism which is a good thing, but we tend to neglect what journalists may have to undergo to acquire the right facts and different parts of an important story. Journalists around the world have encountered dangerous moments in their careers where they had to report on stories that demanded integrating themselves into a threatening situation such as war. This statement definitely holds true to Journalism in Liberia during the civil war. Liberia is a democratic nation and their laws are modeled after the United States. One significant law that protects journalist in Liberia is the first Amendment which states that one has the right to freedom of speech. However, during Liberia's civil war many journalists struggled to report what was occurring in the country because of strong dictating leaders and governmental powers. Under their power, journalist was threatened, harmed, harassed, murdered or even put in jail if they attempted to expose the harsh realities of the civil war. • 146. Liberia Struggles Deontae Comer The Liberian Struggle Do you think you're life is hard? How would it be if civil wars, corrupt government officials, gunfire in the streets, extreme poverty, severe illness and no indoor plumbing were added? That is what most Liberians had to deal with on a daily basis, due to the problems forced upon them that they had to attempt to solve as individuals not as a country. But these problems were caused by an already weakening system that was waiting to be toppled, taken advantage of and destroyed. Many Liberians would die and many lives would be shaken before it would rise again, yet when its change comes it will be stronger than ever. Cooperative Method of Teaching Maths USING COOPERATIVE LEARNING TO FACILITATE THE EDUCATION OF LIBERIA'S YOUTH IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM INTRODUCTION With the ending of the war in Liberia, the transitional period of an interim government, and the election of a new leader to carry the country into the new millennium, a new chapter has begun in the continuing history of the Liberian people. One would hope that the process of nation building is in full swing and all endeavors are underway to bring Liberia back to a state of normalcy, out of the darkness of despair and hopelessness that had engulfed the country for the past fifteen years. The small group of learners must promote each other's learning, must promote each other's success, and hold each other personally and individually accountable to do his or her fair share of the work [4]. First, group members must perceive that they are part of a team and that they all have a common goal. Second, group members must realize that the problem they will solve is a group problem and that all members will share the group's success or failure. Third, to accomplish the group's goal, all students must talk with one another–––to discuss all problems. • 154. Conflict Of African Tribal Descent Today Liberia is a recovering and thriving nation in Western–Africa. It was created by a movement from the United States in the 1840's that allowed freed slaves the opportunity to move to Africa to attempt to make a life in a more accepting environment. Liberia has a very eventful history to include events such as a civil war, coups, being the first independent nation in Africa, and also elected one of the first female presidents in Africa. The topics that will be covered will be a culture outline of Liberia, a breakdown of Liberia's diverse population, a description of their government and economy, and an overview of their military. Liberia is a country with a rich history and culture. Liberia is predominantly inhabited by people of African tribal descent, although a small number of the population, about five percent, are what the locals refer to as "Americo–Liberians" referring to their American descent. According to Horan (n.d.) the Liberian population is broken up into five ethnolinguistic groups: The Mel (West Atlantic) group consists of the Gola and Kissi, who are believed to be the oldest inhabitants. The Mande group, made up of Mandingo, Vai, Gbandi, Kpelle, Loma, Mende, Gio, and Mano peoples, is believed to have entered the area from the northern savannahs in the fifteenth century.
