Ancient Heroes Vs. Modern Heroes
Ancient Heroes VS. Modern Heroes
Heroes are prevalent in everyone's life. Whether someone's hero is a living person or a fabled
character from a movie, everybody has come into contact with some sort of hero. In fact, the
concept of heroes has existed for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over
time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it.
Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern
day heroes have less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed differently than ancient
heroes.
The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to
have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot
since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about
heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired or idealized for
courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are
idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be
powerful, strong, brave, and valued.
In ancient times, heroes had a different motivation for performing good deeds than they do now.
Life was a lot harder during these times because food, water, and timber for building was scarce.
This caused many ancient heroes to have selfish motives.

A Modern Day Hero 's Journey
A Modern Day Hero Heroes are heroes for many different reasons, but they all share one important
thing in common. They must go through the hero's journey. Odysseus faced many trials, monsters,
and temptations in the epic poem The Odyssey. The steps he took were all part of the hero's journey
and made him the great hero that Homer had written him to be. Today, we have a great modern hero.
A large community of people look up to her for guidance through their own personal journeys in
life. Laverne Cox went through a great hero's journey to get to where she is today. The hero's
journey is evident in the life of Laverne Cox because she went through a lot at home and in her
childhood, is tested by friends and enemies, and finally, receives a reward. A hero's home, where
they're familiar and comfortable, is the start of their hero's journey. Laverne Cox's home life and
family support shaped her into the hero and role model she is today for the transgender community.
She didn't always have her family's full support. She often felt like a disgrace and an embarrassment
to her family. These thoughts lead her to attempt suicide at eleven years old. In an interview, she
describes, "During puberty, the attraction for other boys got really strong... I imagined that my
grandmother was looking down on me and that she knew what I was thinking, because she's in
heaven" (Cox). The day she thought her grandmother was looking down on her with
disappointment, was the day she swallowed a large

Ellen Ripley: A Modern Day Hero
Moving forward to the 20th century, the 1979 film Alien and 1986 film Aliens depicts a very
different hero to the ancient heroes like Achilles and Aeneas. Though there is a significant amount of
variation in modern day heroes now than there was in the time of Homer and Virgil, these heroes are
accepted for their character flaws as it makes them much more relatable to the modern audience,
much like what Virgil was trying to do with Aeneas. Ellen Ripley, as introduced in Alien and seen in
the , is a warrant officer on–board the spacecraft Nostromo, a commercial towing ship. Immediately,
we see this person as being completely ordinary and would have lived a completely normal life if it
weren't for the events to come later in the film. In fact, at first she seems like a side character. It is
when the Alien is introduced into the narrative that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

she is in charge. The alien creature has latched on to one of the crew members and, seeing the risk
bringing the creature inside the ship, denies the 3 members entry. The crew–members outside
protested against this and the ship's captain, Dallas, even orders Ripley to let them in, to forget the
protocol put in place. Ripley remains a sense of level–headedness and respects the chain of
command by still refusing to let them in. She asserts her power over the situation to, what would be
if they were on board the ship, her superiors. She listens to their arguments and gives them clear
reason as to why she isn't letting them in saying that 'if we break quarantine, we could all die',
already setting her up to show a sort of piety similar to Aeneas in The Aeneid. She isn't being selfish
and primarily protecting her own life but rather the rest of the crew and the ship. And she was right,
if they had listened to her, everyone would have all

Is Hercules A Modern Day Hero
Heroes can be classified into two categories in our society: superheroes of the fictional kind and
those given the title of hero because they begin as a normal person and do something extraordinary.
Superheroes are a much more Herculean concept as Hercules was destined to be able to perform the
feats that he did during his "labours". If he had not been Zeus' son and had not been given the
strength as a power, he might not even be a hero. His destiny was to be a hero, as fated by the gods
to rule over Mycenae (Perseus (and Bellerophon), 123). Hercules does not match the 'average'
criteria of a modern hero, nor do his motives behind his labours and adventures follow the values of
an altruistic person.
Modern–day heroes are entirely human, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Batman protects Gotham and is loyal to his city; Superman is loyal to the citizens of Earth. Hercules
is not a very loyal person, he, much like other men in the previous plays (Jason, Perseus) married his
prize Deianira but when he wanted Iole, he killed everyone in order to gain her. (The story of
Hercules, 126) Lies were then told to his second wife in order to keep Iole (The Women of Trachis,
142), Hercules was not honest nor was he trustworthy. He also had a temper and could in a fit of
rage murder who ever had ticked him off or if he was tricked. The murder of Megara and his
children could be justified due to Hera, Iris and Madness (Heracles, 127), however the murder of
Iole's father and kingdom cannot be justified. Solely because he could not get what he wanted, he
destroyed a kingdom and tried to take Iole's dignity away by forcing her to beg for him or watch her
parents be killed (The story of Hercules,

Classical Heroes Vs Modern Day Heroes Essay
Modern day heroes and classical heroes are not the same and their differences are more important
than their similarities. The way I describe heroes may be different than others, but I feel the two
kinds of heroes have a difference between the two weather it be minor or major. Heroes are all
around us from old times to modern times.
Heroes can be described as many different things and in many different ways, what do you describe
as a hero? For example, I think a hero is anyone who cares enough to put others in front of
themselves for once. For some, a classical hero may be the same as a modern day hero based on
what they classify a hero as, just like Jason Campbell describes in his book The Hero With A
Thousand Faces. He feels that every hero is the same because they go through the same process they
just have different characteristics. In my opinion modern day heroes and classical heroes have
differences from my definition of a hero. Like my opinion, Natalie Babbitt states in her article
Fantasy And The Classic Hero, that some heroes even deviate from the way of the classic hero
showing that they can be different. She shows this by stating "James goes to a magic world, crosses
his threshold, and stays there rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mark Tapson says a modern day hero is one with "a courageous soul who is no less afraid of death
but more focused on saving lives than taking them." A modern day hero could be standing right next
to you, because they are just as ordinary as you are. They just need a little bit of determination and
to not be all about themselves to do something to benefit others. A teacher in Haiti was described as
"He could have made more money working as a civil engineer, but he said teaching is his life." This
shows that a modern day hero puts others and what's best for others in front of what's best for

Odysseus: A Modern Day Hero
According to the article "What Really Is A Hery, Anyway", Arhur Ashe stated, "Heroes are people
who transform compassion into heroic actions." Heroes can be an ordinary person who helps you

there for you in the time of need. Odysseus is king of Ithaca and a man of honor to the Ithaca people

Odysseus: A Modern Day Hero
Spider–Man is your average modern day hero, he is a citizen who was bitten by an unusual and
peculiar spider which gave him powers and abilities such as being able to shoot webs out of his
hands and climb walls without the need of any equipment. And Odysseus is a Greek hero who was
strong, heavily favored by the gods, and could take down any and all challenges he´d ever have to
face. And if you ever compared the two you would see that both characters are extremely different.
Why you would see this is because we know that Spider–Man is a modern day hero, but can we
consider Odysseus as one. My answer to this would be NO. Society today would not consider
Odysseus as a modern day hero because of many reasons. One would be that he doesn´t show ...

Modern day heroes (such as Spider–Man) don´t care about acquiring glory, their focus is only on the
safety of the people and bringing forth a better and more peaceful world for everyone. Spider–Man
saved a bus full of people while also saving his girlfriend from an evil villain. Whereas Odysseus
would act a bit differently. ¨"Son of Laërtês and the gods of old, Odysseus, master of land ways and
sea ways, Command yourself. Call off this battle now, Or Zeus who views the wide world may be
angry.".¨ Odysseus was so focused on having fame and glory that he couldn´t realize that the battle
had gone to far because of him, and he actually needed someone else to tell him he needs to stop.
Also Odysseus knows that the gods will forever be on his side, so whatever the circumstance
Odysseus would still be considered a hero. ¨Square in the back it struck Odysseus, just under the
right shoulder but he stood up against it– steady as a rock, unstaggered by Antinous' blow– just
shook his head, silent, his mind churning with thoughts of bloody work.¨ Odysseus was thinking
about murdering his own people just because Antinous hit him in his back with a stool. And
Odysseus eventually went on to kill over 100 suitors and yet he was still considered not only a hero
but a phenomenal hero. Whereas if Spider–Man ever did something or anything like that he

Essay about Beowulf and Modern Day Hero
Jason Belcher

World Literature
16 July 2009 This essay is the comparison between Beowulf and the modern day hero. All soldiers
that are fighting for my country certainly comes to mind first, when I think about a modern day
hero. Both hero's are fighting for a good cause, get rewarded for what they do, and get treated with
much respect. Although a soldier might not withhold unworldly strength as one such as Beowulf,
they both are putting their life at stake, which gives them both the title as being a hero. Both the U.S
soldier and Beowulf portray characteristics of a hero. Courage, bravery, and selflessness all play a
huge role in their lives. Although one is past and the other present, hero is the only word that comes

Although one fights by themselves and the other fights with many, they are unknowing of the
outcome. Beowulf is fighting heads up, whereas the soldiers don't have one specific target. Does this
make one better than the other? Certainly not, but then again I'm not sure I wouldn't be a little more
comfortable knowing that I had the strength of thirty men in my hand such as Beowulf. The second
comparison is how they both get rewarded for what they have achieved. After Beowulf defeats the
monster, he receives a ton of treasure and gives back to the people. If that was me, there is no way I
am giving that back after I defeated three monsters. The soldiers get rewards such as a signing
bonus, money for college, and better job opportunities. It's almost as if they have a win–win
situation. Don't get me wrong though, these guys deserve more than anyone. You couldn't pay me
enough money to join though, I've see too many videos of the war to convince me otherwise, and
there is no way in hell I would ever consider fighting a monster. The third comparison is how they
both receive respect. The troops are recognized on the daily basis whether it be a sporting event,
television, or the internet. Beowulf receives respect from not only Hrothgar but also the people that
doubted him in the begging, like Unferth. Although many people don't necessarily respect us having
at war respect is giving to each and every troop we have over there. They might not want to

Modern Hero vs. Anglo Saxon Hero Essay
Today's modern day hero has similarities and differences than the Anglo–Saxon hero. The two
heroes each have different values they believe in. Also, they are motivated to fight for different
reasons. An Anglo–Saxon hero also fights differently than a modern day hero. An example of this
comparison is Bono from the band "U2" and Beowulf. Both modern day heroes, like Bono and
Anglo–Saxon heroes, like Beowulf, try to improve their societies, but do it in different ways and for
different reasons.
Anglo–Saxon heroes have only a few things in common with modern day heroes. One of the things
is that they both want to improve the society that they come from. "That I, alone and with the help
of my men, may purge all evil from this hall" (Raffel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"He raised his arms and seized her by the shoulder" (Raffel 509–510). Beowulf and Anglo–Saxon
heroes fight their battles with their fists. On the other hand, modern hero fights with their minds. "In
1992 Bono took part in a campaign organized by Greenpeace against radioactive pollution" (The
City Council of Turin, no page). Bono has organized and created many foundations that help and
save people all over the world.
Another Difference these two types of heroes have is why they fight their battles. "I sold my life for
this treasure and I sold it well" (Raffel 820–821). The Anglo–Saxon heroic code states that Anglo
Saxon heroes are seeking fortune. Beowulf makes many references in the poem of how he seeks
wealth. Modern day heroes are the complete of this. All of Bono's foundations are non–profit and
the money they raise goes right to various charities. In modern day society it is considered greedy
for a celebrity to seek money. On the other hand, it is perfectly normal and accepted for an Anglo–
Saxon hero to seek wealth.
It was respected and not uncommon for an Anglo–Saxon hero to boast. This is a major difference
between Anglo–Saxon heroes and modern day heroes. Bono has not once bragged about all of the
good things he has done, or the money he makes. Meanwhile, through out the whole poem Beowulf
is bragging about his strengths, riches, and ancestors. All modern day heroes would not be
considered heroes

Characteristics Of Holden Caulfield A Modern Day Hero
In J.D Salinger's novel, The Catcher in the Rye, protagonist and narrator Holden Caulfield is the
quintessential anti–hero who at times displays elements of traditional heroic qualities. Caulfield, a
troubled teenager, has been expelled from multiple prep schools and faces difficulties with fitting
anywhere in society. He is notorious for being impulsive, cynical, skeptical, and quite aloof at times.
Because of his cynicism and judgmental nature, Holden finds it difficult to make friends. This
feeling of alienation leads Holden to blame the people around him and describe them as "phony"
and artificial. For the most part, Holden does not possess the traits of a typical modern day hero

low moral scruples. He boasts, "I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It's awful. If I'm
on the way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable
to say I'm going to the opera," (Salinger 22). Holden's lack of physical strength coupled with his
dishonesty shows that he does not possess heroic qualities. Holden also lacks courage, which is
uncharacteristic of a true hero. A self–described coward, Holden states, " It's no fun being yellow.
Maybe I'm not all yellow... I think I'm partly yellow..." (Salinger 117). Holden displays his lack of
courage many times through out the novel. He admits he would not try to fight for his stolen gloves,
from an unknown thief, should the situation arise. He is also afraid to face Maurice, the pimp, after
being punched in the

Beowulf : The Characteristics Of An Epic Hero
Anybody can be a hero, but being selfish or selfless defines what kind of hero you are. Most of the
time, a selfish hero can be categorised as an epic hero, and a selfless hero with the modern day hero.
An epic hero, such as Beowulf, is a type of hero coming from centuries old tales and poems from
the Anglo–Saxon period. The modern day hero hails from a much more recent time, but the
difference between the two isn't just time period, but is character traits sometimes associated with
time period and situation.
An epic hero is usually the protagonist from an epic poem. These epic heroes possess the traits and
qualities deemed noble and important by society. They are who everyone looks up to and wishes
they could be. For example, an epic hero is one who excels in skill, strength, and courage, battles
monsters, accepts challenges in far off places, invites problems, and are the most loyal of people.
Epic heroes usually do good for the welfare of others, but most importantly does good for self–
glorification. Heroes from this time were usually born holding some importance in society,
possessed super–human characteristics, and admired for great achievements or affected by grand
events. Epic heroes, like Beowulf, usually have some kind of extraordinary physical ability. For
Beowulf, that happens to be remarkable strength, and unmatched courage. As seen in the poem after
which was named after the epic hero, Beowulf pursues the King of a town at which a terrible beast
rampages. He

The Four Characters Of Beowulf And Modern Day Heros
There are two basic types of heroesheros. Some heroes Heros take the direct approach and overcome
obstacles with raw power and strength, both physical and moral. Others use their intelligence along
with trickery and ruthlessness. It is hard for a hero to take a more direct approach than Beowulf. For
example, he rips Grendel's arm right out of its socket! He also shows moral strength by being
champion of the values of his society. There are also some other things that can differentiate two
types heros. The first the type that sees killing as the only solution to a problem, and the second is
one that sees killing as the last possible option and tries to resolve the situation diplomatically. This
is what mainly contrasts Beowulf from modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"None of them expected he would ever see his homeland again or get back to his native place and
the people who reared him." Beowulf leaves his homeland to take down Grendel, and eventually
Grendel's mother. Luke left his home to fight the empire who killed his family and to fight to save
the people he cared about. Beowulf also is granted mystical weapons along his journey such as
when "Unferth lends Beowulf Hrunting, a sword that has never failed and has been passed down in
Unferth's family," also Luke Skywalker is granted a "mystical" weapon by Obi–wan Kenobi called a
lightsaber. But the things that really separate Beowulf from the two modern heros I have described
are the values of the time periods these stories were written. Like how Beowulf's only solution to a
problem is killing the problem. Whereas in Star Wars, Luke is able to coax the good out of his father
(his enemy) by refusing to fight. This makes Luke Skywalker a modern hero. Beowulf would never
do anything like this. The Values shown in Star Wars reflects the values of America after the
Vietnam War – they're vastly different from the values of Anglo–Saxon, which the Epic Beowulf is
based off of. Although the journeys may have some differences

Matt Lauer : The Characteristics Of A Modern-Day Tragic Hero
Typically, heroes are seen as the "good guys" who are brave, courageous, and save others. Tragic
heroes are not the same kind of the hero's we usually think of. Although they do have positive,
heroic qualities, they commit actions that cause a downfall, which later leads to a spiritual or literal
death. A tragic hero must convey certain characteristics. One is that they are of noble and high
placement in the world. They also must have a tragic flaw that could be either positive or negative.
Another characteristic is a reversal of fortune or a downfall due to their tragic flaw. After
committing the action, the tragic hero is more self–aware of what they did wrong. They learn from
their experience through a spiritual or literal death. Matt Lauer demonstrates the characteristics of
being a modern–day tragic hero due to his recent actions that was caused by his tragic flaws of pride
and confidence.
The past 20 year, Matt Lauer worked as a news anchor for the "Today" Show, making $20 million a
year. Recently, his career on television came to an end after a complaint was reported from another
colleague about inappropriate behavior at work. His fame from being in the spotlight for two
decades caused him to gain pride and confidence in himself. Although, confidence and pride are
indeed two positive qualities to have, he took those qualities too far into thinking sexual actions
were acceptable. In an interview with Lauer's attorney, Carney Shegerian stated, "It doesn't matter

However, right after that, crisis comes and he is hit by the ambulance he called to take the people he

Comparing Beowulf And The Modern Day Hero
Beowulf has been known as the classic literary hero for years. He contains all the qualities that one
thinks of when the word hero is mentioned. He is strong, brave, just and of course fights the bad
guy. When you look at the people that we admire and consider heroes today, you can see a lot of
similarities with Beowulf but you can also see some differences.
Beowulf and the modern day hero both were fighting for what was just and right. They were
protecting people. Beowulf defeats monsters to get rid of evil. Today soldiers defeat the enemy who
is trying to bring down innocent people. Policeman patrol the streets to help keep the modern day
"monsters" for praying on the innocent. Just like Beowulf, our modern day heroes work to promote

We have seen in recent days where people do not respect or even value the life of law enforcement

Beowulf: A Modern Day Hero
Beowulf is the epic poem that tells the story of a warrior and his heroic adventures. In the story,
Beowulf is hailed a hero after defeating Grendel and his mother. Despite being presented as one,
Beowulf is not a hero by today's standards. Beowulf is too conceited to be considered a hero. A
modern day hero is someone who is selfless and helps others for nothing in return. Contrary to this,
Beowulf brags and is fighting for the sole purpose of adding upon his fame and glory. During his
battle with Grendel's mother, he struggled to defeat her. It is then said that "Beowulf longed only for
fame, leaped back into battle" (37). Beowulf is not fighting Grendel's monstrous mother to protect
the people, but for the fame that he will gain from it. Another example of Beowulf's arrogance is
that before he goes off to fight the dragon, he says "But I will fight again, seek fame still, If the
dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me" (609). Even in old age, he is only concerned with his
lof, or fame, more so than the wellbeing of his people. All of this is demonstrative of Beowulf's true,
selfish motivation for the heroic deeds he performs on his adventure, not characteristics of a modern

After killing Grendel's mother, Beowulf took "Grendel's head and the hilt of the giants' jeweled

them, they will know of his bravery, further increasing his fame and glory. Towards the end of the
story, after defeating the dragon, Beowulf says "Hurry, bring me ancient silver, precious jewels,
shining armor and gems, before I die" (758). Beowulf wants the last thing he sees before he dies to

Hayden Panettiere: Modern Day Hero
Hayden Panettiere, a renowned actor, grew up to be a person who I considered to be my modern day
hero. Hayden is an award winning actress and an animal rights activist who I see myself in
everyday. A modern day hero to me is an individual who is humble and stands up for something that
they believe in. This modern day hero is one that is not corruptible by fame or popularity, yet still
continues to strive and maintain a path towards their goals that is not affected by a cruel society. An
individual that fulfills these qualities is Hayden Panettiere.
Hayden Panettiere was born on August 21, 1989 in Palisades New York as the daughter of Skip, a
local fire department lieutenant, and Lesley Panettiere, a soap opera actress. Born with acting and ...

How Is Odysseus A Modern Day Hero
"Tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes' son, whose home's on Ithaca!" This is a
quotation from the story The Odyssey written by Homer who was one of the greatest epic poem
writers in Greek history. In this story, a man named Odysseus goes on this journey to find his way
home to Ithaca. But, he runs into trouble on his way there. It takes Odysseus ten years to get home
when it should have really only took him three weeks. Odysseus uses and manipulates people on his
way home and this is what does not make Odysseus a modern day hero. Odysseus really shows his
arrogance an egotistical ways when it comes to him getting out of trouble.

Odysseus is a hero that uses modern day standards. Odysseus has done many things on his trip going
to and from Ithaca. He has traveled oceans and fought in a war and fought his way back home. He
was away for 20 years from his family in Ithaca. Odysseus he is known by many people for being a
hero.
Odysseus is a modern day hero in many ways for example, soldiers have to leave their family and
you might not know how long it could be years to fight in a war. That is what Odysseus did he had
to leave his family and his home to go to war with the Trojans. He had left with thousands of ships

Examples Of Odysseus: A Modern Day Hero
In the bible in the book of Joshua 1:9 it says "Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or
discouraged. For the lord your god is with you wherever you go." A Hero is someone who does nice
things or saves a person from something. Homer wrote a book called The Odyssey, which was based
on Odysseus, who is considered a hero and is tested by the Greek gods. In the story Scylla &
Charybdis, Odyssey knew if he went against Scylla he would lose some men. However, he took the
chance and went through it just to get back home. In Ancient Greeks he is a hero, but he's not

Odysseus: A Modern Day Hero
Do you consider odysseus to be a hero? Many people have different beliefs if he was a hero or not.
With all of the things he did, Odysseus would not fit the descriptions of a modern day hero.
Odysseus did a lot of things in his time that were bad, one was he was really arrogant and sneaky he
was also killing people and hero's do not kill people they help people.
The first example that Odysseus is not a hero is He kills people with a bow because he gets upset (
Line 1420 in Odysseus's revenge page 609). The arrow hit Antinous under the chin and went
through the back of him. Another reason Odysseus does not fit the description of an hero is he hides
in decies when he is on the way to his own kingdom people think he is dead so he is in decies.
Superhero's dress up but usually one or two people know who is behind the mask or costume , for
example in spider–man the first one Peter Parker has a girlfriend and she knows that he is under the
mask. Another example is he is very arrogant and cocky once Odysseus wins the battle at Troy he
tells the gods he does not need them anymore and Odysseus also does not give a sacrifice to the
gods for helping the Greeks win. Because of the stupid actions he has done the Gods make it
difficult for the journey home. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Odysseus Hero Quotes
Imagine being alive in the 1200 B.C. time era when gods and goddesses just hung around and got
drunk every day. Now, that you're in the 1200 B.C. setting think about people making one mistake,
or doing something wrong and being killed for it. Think of the person doing all the killing, they
aren't someone who has escaped from a mental institution, but a well known and loved person,
would you still consider them a hero? Odysseus is not a modern hero because he kills a lot of
people, is not loyal to his wife, and he was not a very nice guy overall.
One way that Odysseus does not fit the mold of a modern hero is how he kills many people. In
"Odysseus' Revenge," Odysseus described the scene as ''many and many slain," and when he killed
the suitors and housekeepers, ''twitching their cold lives away in Helio's fiery air: so lay the suitors
heaped on one another'', this quote says that Odysseus killed many people. Modern–day heros, like
cops, DO NOT leave dead bodies just lying all over the place. Odysseus is not a very smart
murderer since he does not do anything with his victims. Odysseus killed so many people, that in the
part ''Odysseus' Revenge'' the dead bodies are compared to fishermen bringing in many fish. The

Examples Of Heroism In Beowulf
Heroism and Its Adaptation Over Time (Prompt #3)
Heroism is defined as great bravery, but there are many interpretations of what great bravery truly
signifies. Over time the image of heroism is altered to conform to cultural beliefs and morals. Often
times, heroes are written into poems, or stories to set an exceptionally high standard and become a
role model for people in their time period. In the famous epic, Beowulf, the ideal hero is portrayed
as a superior warrior who is able to overcome unthinkable means. This proposal of a warrior as a
hero did not last long in history, however. As times changed, people developed different values and
beliefs that transformed a hero from a warrior to a saint. In today's world, a hero is considered as ...

As new religions develop and spread, people began to form a new idea of perfection. As the new
image of an ideal hero was formed, poems, books, and such were written to set example for how
people should act in their day and age. The reason that these heroes change over time more
specifically is due to their lifestyles. In ancient times, people required different traits to be
successful. Due to the warring lifestyle that was existent during the writing of texts such as Beowulf,
heroes were modeled to be great fighters. This is also consistent with other ancient heroes such as
Achilles in Greek Mythology; however, this changed over time as religions were established and
people became more civilized. Religion gave people a more positive outlook on life and ended much
of the barbarian lifestyle. The new idea of a hero developed into a righteous god–fearing person; so,
saints became the newfound role models. Saints are still seen as heroes today, but much more
sparsely. This can be accredited to various events in history including the Renaissance and
Protestant Reformation. With the Renaissance came an increase in individualistic thinking, and so
on the entire root of modern day heroism. People of all types began highly regarding artists and
philosophers, longing to be of their caliber. With the colonization of the Americas also came a new
type of hero. Adventurers such as Christopher Columbus were praised received glory for their
accomplishment. Jumping forward to today, heroes are labeled daily for their acts of bravery and
quick thinking abilities that save lives. Everyday individuals such as pilot Chesley Sullenberger, the
pilot that crash–landed into the Hudson River, are remembered as heroes for saving lives, as stated
many times that "He was hailed as a national hero"(Chesley). Not only is the word hero used in
relation to real events, but fictional characters are also dubbed as heroes in modern

Beowulf Compared To Modern Day Hero
In this epic poem, Beowulf is portrayed as an ancient hero but he also has traits of a modern day
hero. Throughout the book, Beowulfs character is developed deeper so the reader can see his
characteristics. These characteristics can be compared to both an ancient and modern day hero.
Beowulf is very similar to other ancient heroes, like Achilles, who were present in other epic poems
around the same time period. For example, Beowulf is strong, bold, courageous, and skilled like
other ancient heroes are. Beowulf ultimately faces danger head on with extreme confidence and
courage just as any ancient hero does. However, Beowulf is also similar to modern day heroes in
many ways as well. For instance, most modern heroes are treated with respect,

Essay about Tiger Woods: A Modern Day Tragic Hero
Thesis: Professional golfer Tiger Woods is a modern–day tragic hero because his flaw of excessive
pride directly led to the destruction of both his personal relationships and his professional career.
Tiger took complete responsibility for his actions, but it came too late and by then he ended up
suffering consequences that were excessive compared to his errors.
One reason why Tiger Woods could be characterized as a modern day tragic hero is because he
demonstrates the tragic flaw of excessive pride in the way he felt he was superior to be committed to
just his own wife. For example, one source notes multiple women have claimed to have affairs with
Tiger while he was married and had two kids. According to the author, "In [2009], Woods's ... Show

temptation there is, one should always think twice before doing something they may regret later on.
Another reason Tiger Woods could be considered modern day tragic hero is because he came to a
realization that he was directly responsible for his own downfall, by gathering a press conference
and sincerely apologizing to everyone he had hurt. During the press conference, Tiger talked about
how he was so ashamed of what he did. Tiger states, "The issue involved here was my repeated
irresponsible behavior. I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable, and I
am the only person to blame" (Woods). This quote shows that Tiger took complete responsibility of
his actions by owning up to what he did wrong. It was definitely hard for Tiger to admit the mistakes
he had committed to a room full of his friends and family he had grown up with. Tiger knows what
he did would affect his life severely and it will never be the same again. Also during Tiger's press
conference he discussed how he had put an effort into trying to fix what he did wrong by attending
therapy. Woods commented, that he needed help and went to therapy to fix the problems he was

Wang Lung became one of the wealthiest landowners in the Anweih province of China. Sadly, Wang
Lung's two sons did not share his passion for "the good earth" and cared only for their bequest.

The Boxer Rebellion happened in 1900 when Chinese nationalists started an uprising in order to

George Orwell's 1984
War is Peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. These are the beliefs that the citizens of
Oceania, in the novel titled 1984, written by George Orwell, live by. In this novel, Oceania, one of
the three remaining world super powers, is a totalitarian, a society headed by 'Big Brother' and his
regime, known as the ministries of Truth, Love, and Peace. A totalitarian government is defined as a
government characterized by a political authority which exercises absolute and centralized control,

Oceania must live in, ruled by fear and under force every day. The names of the different ministries

In no public or private utterance was it ever admitted that the three powers had at any time been
grouped along different lines.? Although throughout the story, the conditions of these wars were
constantly changing, it made no difference to the masses, and the current ?truth? was all that
mattered. ?Oceania was at war with Eurasia: therefore Oceania had always been at war with
Eurasia? (Orwell, pg 35). The truth is whatever the government wants it to be, and the people accept
it at face value, a concept cleverly worded as ?reality control.? (Orwell, pg. 36) Likewise in today?s
society, even though the people live under the rule of a democratic republic in the U.S., a large
portion of the news that we receive is distorted and filtered, many times the truth is not what it
appears to be. Being a democracy does not stop that from happening. Furthermore, like the citizens
of Oceania, we as citizens often accept the information that we receive from the media as absolute
truth, not questioning what we hear, even though we have the privilege of doing so. In the
totalitarian society of 1984, the government alters history constantly and changes it to fit the
predictions and needs of the party, so that they always come out ahead. The Party destroys any
evidence that the past has been altered, and asserts absolute correctness and truth. One might argue
that it would be impossible to get rid of all past evidence in today?s world, because

Characteristics Of Beowulf A Modern Day Hero
Heroes have been known widely for their non–violent ways, their act of kindness, and helping
people because it's the right thing to do (and not for fame). A modern day hero usually shows these
types of acts. However, an Anglo–Saxon hero shows some of the opposite traits, including violence.
Beowulf is one of a good example of an Anglo–Saxon hero. However, Beowulf shouldn't be
considered as a modern day hero today because he had different super abilities that a normal person
doesn't have, he uses the acts of violence, and he's really boastful about himself. Beowulf wouldn't
be considered a modern day hero because he uses the acts of violence. Although his acts of violence
would be considered heroic in Anglo Saxon times because of his bravery by defeating many
monsters including Grendel, Grendel's Mom, and The Fire Dragon. Modern day heroes are also able
to show bravery using their non–violent ways. For example, Leslie Morissette was inspired by how
her son Graham (who died at an early age) lived his life caring for others. Morissette founded the
nonprofit Grahamtastic Connection in his honor. The organization provided free technology that
includes computers, iPads, and robots to children battling cancer and other serious illnesses. Since

Many people disagree on who might qualify to be a hero. While a few people could qualify to be
called a hero, many people have done some heroic things at some point in their life; Beowulf and
Cuchallain demonstrated heroism through their actions. A hero in the medieval times is considered
to be someone that is a noble character that fights for his honor or the honor of his kingdom or
community and also someone that is willing to risk his or her life for the greater good. Beowulf was

The modern day hero contributes positively to the society; he or she is a role model to different race,
age and gender. In Beowulf, the king was in charge of the kingdom and he was obligated to fight
with his warriors while the modern day, the President is in charge of the people but he does not fight
with them in battle, he sends his soldiers off. Modern day heroes are not out looking for fame or
fortune, they operate with great passion and drive to fulfill their dreams; if they get recognized for
their great work, it is not publicized, it is done within the confines of the work environment. Modern
day heroes do not depend on physical strength, they think of other ways to positively impact the

In the poem, Beowulf decides to fight Grendel without weapons and to only use his bare hands.
"Behind some broad linden shield: my hands Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the
monster" (267–269).Using only your hands to battle someone not only shows the bravery of him,
but shows super strength because bare hands have a small strength to them unlike swords that have
an amazing amount of strength. Beowulf decides to show the other Geats how it is really done.
Within the battle with Grendel's mother, Beowulf uses a sword to defeat her named Naegling. "Then
he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed with their the
best of all weapons, but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length.
He drew it from its scabbard, broken the chain on its hilt, and then savage, now, angry and

values that we think are important during a time of crisis" (Cannon). The modern day hero has
evolved based on the needs of the people of the time. For example, in the year 1200, war was fought
by man–to–man combat resulting in great warriors to be viewed as heroes. However, in today's
society, the requirement of a hero has changed. We depict them based on the lives they have saved
and how they have accomplished that deed. Many times, martyrs are considered heroes because they
have died for the people they have protected, but not all heroes come face to face with war. They
may be off site hidden from the battle grounds, while still fighting for our lives. Two outstanding
heroes in history are Beowulf, King of the Danes, and Achilles, an important warrior in the Trojan ...

King Beowulf fought for his people, no matter the circumstances, He knew that his old and worn
down body would not defend his land as well as it did against Grendel, but he chose to secure his
people's safety before his own. Beowulf did not bargain with King Hrothgar when he protected his
land in the beginning of the epic poem, but instead did it out of the love and respect for his king.
Similarly, Achilles showed honor for Patroclus after he was brutally murdered by Hector. He ensued
the death of Hector, and went on to win the war in his honor. He knew that he would be
outnumbered in his feats, but decided to combat as many Trojan soldiers as he could to defend the
Achaean army. Both Beowulf and Achilles show honor for the people they love, and defend their
land no matter how physically diminishing or strenuous it may

Ancient Heroes Vs. Modern Heroes

  • 1. Ancient Heroes Vs. Modern Heroes Ancient Heroes VS. Modern Heroes Heroes are prevalent in everyone's life. Whether someone's hero is a living person or a fabled character from a movie, everybody has come into contact with some sort of hero. In fact, the concept of heroes has existed for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it. Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern day heroes have less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed differently than ancient heroes. The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be powerful, strong, brave, and valued. In ancient times, heroes had a different motivation for performing good deeds than they do now. Life was a lot harder during these times because food, water, and timber for building was scarce. This caused many ancient heroes to have selfish motives. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. A Modern Day Hero 's Journey A Modern Day Hero Heroes are heroes for many different reasons, but they all share one important thing in common. They must go through the hero's journey. Odysseus faced many trials, monsters, and temptations in the epic poem The Odyssey. The steps he took were all part of the hero's journey and made him the great hero that Homer had written him to be. Today, we have a great modern hero. A large community of people look up to her for guidance through their own personal journeys in life. Laverne Cox went through a great hero's journey to get to where she is today. The hero's journey is evident in the life of Laverne Cox because she went through a lot at home and in her childhood, is tested by friends and enemies, and finally, receives a reward. A hero's home, where they're familiar and comfortable, is the start of their hero's journey. Laverne Cox's home life and family support shaped her into the hero and role model she is today for the transgender community. She didn't always have her family's full support. She often felt like a disgrace and an embarrassment to her family. These thoughts lead her to attempt suicide at eleven years old. In an interview, she describes, "During puberty, the attraction for other boys got really strong... I imagined that my grandmother was looking down on me and that she knew what I was thinking, because she's in heaven" (Cox). The day she thought her grandmother was looking down on her with disappointment, was the day she swallowed a large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Ellen Ripley: A Modern Day Hero Moving forward to the 20th century, the 1979 film Alien and 1986 film Aliens depicts a very different hero to the ancient heroes like Achilles and Aeneas. Though there is a significant amount of variation in modern day heroes now than there was in the time of Homer and Virgil, these heroes are accepted for their character flaws as it makes them much more relatable to the modern audience, much like what Virgil was trying to do with Aeneas. Ellen Ripley, as introduced in Alien and seen in the , is a warrant officer on–board the spacecraft Nostromo, a commercial towing ship. Immediately, we see this person as being completely ordinary and would have lived a completely normal life if it weren't for the events to come later in the film. In fact, at first she seems like a side character. It is when the Alien is introduced into the narrative that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As 3rd ranking officer on–board the Nostromo, when the two 'higher–ups', she asserts the fact that she is in charge. The alien creature has latched on to one of the crew members and, seeing the risk bringing the creature inside the ship, denies the 3 members entry. The crew–members outside protested against this and the ship's captain, Dallas, even orders Ripley to let them in, to forget the protocol put in place. Ripley remains a sense of level–headedness and respects the chain of command by still refusing to let them in. She asserts her power over the situation to, what would be if they were on board the ship, her superiors. She listens to their arguments and gives them clear reason as to why she isn't letting them in saying that 'if we break quarantine, we could all die', already setting her up to show a sort of piety similar to Aeneas in The Aeneid. She isn't being selfish and primarily protecting her own life but rather the rest of the crew and the ship. And she was right, if they had listened to her, everyone would have all ... • 7. Is Hercules A Modern Day Hero Heroes can be classified into two categories in our society: superheroes of the fictional kind and those given the title of hero because they begin as a normal person and do something extraordinary. Superheroes are a much more Herculean concept as Hercules was destined to be able to perform the feats that he did during his "labours". If he had not been Zeus' son and had not been given the strength as a power, he might not even be a hero. His destiny was to be a hero, as fated by the gods to rule over Mycenae (Perseus (and Bellerophon), 123). Hercules does not match the 'average' criteria of a modern hero, nor do his motives behind his labours and adventures follow the values of an altruistic person. Modern–day heroes are entirely human, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Batman protects Gotham and is loyal to his city; Superman is loyal to the citizens of Earth. Hercules is not a very loyal person, he, much like other men in the previous plays (Jason, Perseus) married his prize Deianira but when he wanted Iole, he killed everyone in order to gain her. (The story of Hercules, 126) Lies were then told to his second wife in order to keep Iole (The Women of Trachis, 142), Hercules was not honest nor was he trustworthy. He also had a temper and could in a fit of rage murder who ever had ticked him off or if he was tricked. The murder of Megara and his children could be justified due to Hera, Iris and Madness (Heracles, 127), however the murder of Iole's father and kingdom cannot be justified. Solely because he could not get what he wanted, he destroyed a kingdom and tried to take Iole's dignity away by forcing her to beg for him or watch her parents be killed (The story of Hercules, ... • 9. Classical Heroes Vs Modern Day Heroes Essay Modern day heroes and classical heroes are not the same and their differences are more important than their similarities. The way I describe heroes may be different than others, but I feel the two kinds of heroes have a difference between the two weather it be minor or major. Heroes are all around us from old times to modern times. Heroes can be described as many different things and in many different ways, what do you describe as a hero? For example, I think a hero is anyone who cares enough to put others in front of themselves for once. For some, a classical hero may be the same as a modern day hero based on what they classify a hero as, just like Jason Campbell describes in his book The Hero With A Thousand Faces. He feels that every hero is the same because they go through the same process they just have different characteristics. In my opinion modern day heroes and classical heroes have differences from my definition of a hero. Like my opinion, Natalie Babbitt states in her article Fantasy And The Classic Hero, that some heroes even deviate from the way of the classic hero showing that they can be different. She shows this by stating "James goes to a magic world, crosses his threshold, and stays there rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mark Tapson says a modern day hero is one with "a courageous soul who is no less afraid of death but more focused on saving lives than taking them." A modern day hero could be standing right next to you, because they are just as ordinary as you are. They just need a little bit of determination and to not be all about themselves to do something to benefit others. Odysseus is king of Ithaca and a man of honor to the Ithaca people . Odysseus goes on an journey but on his journey he tries to get back home , but on his journey home he cheated on his wife and didn't care about any of his crew members that came with him. • 13. Odysseus: A Modern Day Hero Spider–Man is your average modern day hero, he is a citizen who was bitten by an unusual and peculiar spider which gave him powers and abilities such as being able to shoot webs out of his hands and climb walls without the need of any equipment. And Odysseus is a Greek hero who was strong, heavily favored by the gods, and could take down any and all challenges he´d ever have to face. And if you ever compared the two you would see that both characters are extremely different. Why you would see this is because we know that Spider–Man is a modern day hero, but can we consider Odysseus as one. My answer to this would be NO. Society today would not consider Odysseus as a modern day hero because of many reasons. One would be that he doesn´t show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modern day heroes (such as Spider–Man) don´t care about acquiring glory, their focus is only on the safety of the people and bringing forth a better and more peaceful world for everyone. Spider–Man saved a bus full of people while also saving his girlfriend from an evil villain. Whereas Odysseus would act a bit differently. ¨"Son of Laërtês and the gods of old, Odysseus, master of land ways and sea ways, Command yourself. Call off this battle now, Or Zeus who views the wide world may be angry.".¨ Odysseus was so focused on having fame and glory that he couldn´t realize that the battle had gone to far because of him, and he actually needed someone else to tell him he needs to stop. Also Odysseus knows that the gods will forever be on his side, so whatever the circumstance Odysseus would still be considered a hero. ¨Square in the back it struck Odysseus, just under the right shoulder but he stood up against it– steady as a rock, unstaggered by Antinous' blow– just shook his head, silent, his mind churning with thoughts of bloody work.¨ Odysseus was thinking about murdering his own people just because Antinous hit him in his back with a stool. And Odysseus eventually went on to kill over 100 suitors and yet he was still considered not only a hero but a phenomenal hero. Whereas if Spider–Man ever did something or anything like that he ... • 17. Essay about Beowulf and Modern Day Hero Jason Belcher Mr. Lavender World Literature 16 July 2009 This essay is the comparison between Beowulf and the modern day hero. All soldiers that are fighting for my country certainly comes to mind first, when I think about a modern day hero. Both hero's are fighting for a good cause, get rewarded for what they do, and get treated with much respect. Although a soldier might not withhold unworldly strength as one such as Beowulf, they both are putting their life at stake, which gives them both the title as being a hero. Both the U.S soldier and Beowulf portray characteristics of a hero. Courage, bravery, and selflessness all play a huge role in their lives. Although one is past and the other present, hero is the only word that comes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although one fights by themselves and the other fights with many, they are unknowing of the outcome. Beowulf is fighting heads up, whereas the soldiers don't have one specific target. Does this make one better than the other? Certainly not, but then again I'm not sure I wouldn't be a little more comfortable knowing that I had the strength of thirty men in my hand such as Beowulf. The second comparison is how they both get rewarded for what they have achieved. After Beowulf defeats the monster, he receives a ton of treasure and gives back to the people. If that was me, there is no way I am giving that back after I defeated three monsters. The soldiers get rewards such as a signing bonus, money for college, and better job opportunities. It's almost as if they have a win–win situation. Don't get me wrong though, these guys deserve more than anyone. You couldn't pay me enough money to join though, I've see too many videos of the war to convince me otherwise, and there is no way in hell I would ever consider fighting a monster. The third comparison is how they both receive respect. The troops are recognized on the daily basis whether it be a sporting event, television, or the internet. Beowulf receives respect from not only Hrothgar but also the people that doubted him in the begging, like Unferth. Although many people don't necessarily respect us having at war respect is giving to each and every troop we have over there. They might not want to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Modern Hero vs. Anglo Saxon Hero Essay Today's modern day hero has similarities and differences than the Anglo–Saxon hero. The two heroes each have different values they believe in. Also, they are motivated to fight for different reasons. An Anglo–Saxon hero also fights differently than a modern day hero. An example of this comparison is Bono from the band "U2" and Beowulf. Both modern day heroes, like Bono and Anglo–Saxon heroes, like Beowulf, try to improve their societies, but do it in different ways and for different reasons. Anglo–Saxon heroes have only a few things in common with modern day heroes. One of the things is that they both want to improve the society that they come from. "That I, alone and with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this hall" (Raffel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "He raised his arms and seized her by the shoulder" (Raffel 509–510). Beowulf and Anglo–Saxon heroes fight their battles with their fists. On the other hand, modern hero fights with their minds. "In 1992 Bono took part in a campaign organized by Greenpeace against radioactive pollution" (The City Council of Turin, no page). Bono has organized and created many foundations that help and save people all over the world. Another Difference these two types of heroes have is why they fight their battles. "I sold my life for this treasure and I sold it well" (Raffel 820–821). The Anglo–Saxon heroic code states that Anglo Saxon heroes are seeking fortune. Beowulf makes many references in the poem of how he seeks wealth. Modern day heroes are the complete of this. All of Bono's foundations are non–profit and the money they raise goes right to various charities. In modern day society it is considered greedy for a celebrity to seek money. On the other hand, it is perfectly normal and accepted for an Anglo– Saxon hero to seek wealth. It was respected and not uncommon for an Anglo–Saxon hero to boast. This is a major difference between Anglo–Saxon heroes and modern day heroes. Bono has not once bragged about all of the good things he has done, or the money he makes. Characteristics Of Holden Caulfield A Modern Day Hero In J.D Salinger's novel, The Catcher in the Rye, protagonist and narrator Holden Caulfield is the quintessential anti–hero who at times displays elements of traditional heroic qualities. Caulfield, a troubled teenager, has been expelled from multiple prep schools and faces difficulties with fitting anywhere in society. He is notorious for being impulsive, cynical, skeptical, and quite aloof at times. Because of his cynicism and judgmental nature, Holden finds it difficult to make friends. This feeling of alienation leads Holden to blame the people around him and describe them as "phony" and artificial. He boasts, "I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It's awful. If I'm on the way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera," (Salinger 22). Holden's lack of physical strength coupled with his dishonesty shows that he does not possess heroic qualities. Holden also lacks courage, which is uncharacteristic of a true hero. • 23. Beowulf : The Characteristics Of An Epic Hero Anybody can be a hero, but being selfish or selfless defines what kind of hero you are. Most of the time, a selfish hero can be categorised as an epic hero, and a selfless hero with the modern day hero. An epic hero, such as Beowulf, is a type of hero coming from centuries old tales and poems from the Anglo–Saxon period. The modern day hero hails from a much more recent time, but the difference between the two isn't just time period, but is character traits sometimes associated with time period and situation. An epic hero is usually the protagonist from an epic poem. These epic heroes possess the traits and qualities deemed noble and important by society. They are who everyone looks up to and wishes they could be. For example, an epic hero is one who excels in skill, strength, and courage, battles monsters, accepts challenges in far off places, invites problems, and are the most loyal of people. Epic heroes usually do good for the welfare of others, but most importantly does good for self– glorification. Heroes from this time were usually born holding some importance in society, possessed super–human characteristics, and admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. Epic heroes, like Beowulf, usually have some kind of extraordinary physical ability. For Beowulf, that happens to be remarkable strength, and unmatched courage. Some heroes Heros take the direct approach and overcome obstacles with raw power and strength, both physical and moral. Others use their intelligence along with trickery and ruthlessness. It is hard for a hero to take a more direct approach than Beowulf. For example, he rips Grendel's arm right out of its socket! He also shows moral strength by being champion of the values of his society. There are also some other things that can differentiate two types heros. The first the type that sees killing as the only solution to a problem, and the second is one that sees killing as the last possible option and tries to resolve the situation diplomatically. Beowulf also is granted mystical weapons along his journey such as when "Unferth lends Beowulf Hrunting, a sword that has never failed and has been passed down in Unferth's family," also Luke Skywalker is granted a "mystical" weapon by Obi–wan Kenobi called a lightsaber. But the things that really separate Beowulf from the two modern heros I have described are the values of the time periods these stories were written. Like how Beowulf's only solution to a problem is killing the problem. Whereas in Star Wars, Luke is able to coax the good out of his father (his enemy) by refusing to fight. This makes Luke Skywalker a modern hero. Beowulf would never do anything like this. The Values shown in Star Wars reflects the values of America after the Vietnam War – they're vastly different from the values of Anglo–Saxon, which the Epic Beowulf is based off of. • 29. Matt Lauer : The Characteristics Of A Modern-Day Tragic Hero Typically, heroes are seen as the "good guys" who are brave, courageous, and save others. Tragic heroes are not the same kind of the hero's we usually think of. Although they do have positive, heroic qualities, they commit actions that cause a downfall, which later leads to a spiritual or literal death. A tragic hero must convey certain characteristics. One is that they are of noble and high placement in the world. They also must have a tragic flaw that could be either positive or negative. Another characteristic is a reversal of fortune or a downfall due to their tragic flaw. After committing the action, the tragic hero is more self–aware of what they did wrong. They learn from their experience through a spiritual or literal death. Matt Lauer demonstrates the characteristics of being a modern–day tragic hero due to his recent actions that was caused by his tragic flaws of pride and confidence. • 37. Beowulf: A Modern Day Hero Beowulf is the epic poem that tells the story of a warrior and his heroic adventures. In the story, Beowulf is hailed a hero after defeating Grendel and his mother. Despite being presented as one, Beowulf is not a hero by today's standards. Beowulf is too conceited to be considered a hero. A modern day hero is someone who is selfless and helps others for nothing in return. Contrary to this, Beowulf brags and is fighting for the sole purpose of adding upon his fame and glory. During his battle with Grendel's mother, he struggled to defeat her. It is then said that "Beowulf longed only for fame, leaped back into battle" (37). Beowulf is not fighting Grendel's monstrous mother to protect the people, but for the fame that he will gain from it. Another example of Beowulf's arrogance is that before he goes off to fight the dragon, he says "But I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me" (609). Even in old age, he is only concerned with his lof, or fame, more so than the wellbeing of his people. Think of the person doing all the killing, they aren't someone who has escaped from a mental institution, but a well known and loved person, would you still consider them a hero? Odysseus is not a modern hero because he kills a lot of people, is not loyal to his wife, and he was not a very nice guy overall. In "Odysseus' Revenge," Odysseus described the scene as ''many and many slain," and when he killed the suitors and housekeepers, ''twitching their cold lives away in Helio's fiery air: so lay the suitors heaped on one another'', this quote says that Odysseus killed many people. • 51. Examples Of Heroism In Beowulf Heroism and Its Adaptation Over Time (Prompt #3) Heroism is defined as great bravery, but there are many interpretations of what great bravery truly signifies. Over time the image of heroism is altered to conform to cultural beliefs and morals. Often times, heroes are written into poems, or stories to set an exceptionally high standard and become a role model for people in their time period. In the famous epic, Beowulf, the ideal hero is portrayed as a superior warrior who is able to overcome unthinkable means. This proposal of a warrior as a hero did not last long in history, however. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As new religions develop and spread, people began to form a new idea of perfection. As the new image of an ideal hero was formed, poems, books, and such were written to set example for how people should act in their day and age. The reason that these heroes change over time more specifically is due to their lifestyles. In ancient times, people required different traits to be successful. Due to the warring lifestyle that was existent during the writing of texts such as Beowulf, heroes were modeled to be great fighters. This is also consistent with other ancient heroes such as Achilles in Greek Mythology; however, this changed over time as religions were established and people became more civilized. Religion gave people a more positive outlook on life and ended much of the barbarian lifestyle. The new idea of a hero developed into a righteous god–fearing person; so, saints became the newfound role models. Saints are still seen as heroes today, but much more sparsely. This can be accredited to various events in history including the Renaissance and Protestant Reformation. With the Renaissance came an increase in individualistic thinking, and so on the entire root of modern day heroism. People of all types began highly regarding artists and philosophers, longing to be of their caliber. With the colonization of the Americas also came a new type of hero. Adventurers such as Christopher Columbus were praised received glory for their accomplishment. Jumping forward to today, heroes are labeled daily for their acts of bravery and quick thinking abilities that save lives. Everyday individuals such as pilot Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot that crash–landed into the Hudson River, are remembered as heroes for saving lives, as stated many times that "He was hailed as a national hero"(Chesley). Tiger took complete responsibility for his actions, but it came too late and by then he ended up suffering consequences that were excessive compared to his errors. Another reason Tiger Woods could be considered modern day tragic hero is because he came to a realization that he was directly responsible for his own downfall, by gathering a press conference and sincerely apologizing to everyone he had hurt. These are the beliefs that the citizens of Oceania, in the novel titled 1984, written by George Orwell, live by. In this novel, Oceania, one of the three remaining world super powers, is a totalitarian, a society headed by 'Big Brother' and his regime, known as the ministries of Truth, Love, and Peace. A totalitarian government is defined as a government characterized by a political authority which exercises absolute and centralized control, and in which the state regulates every realm of life. This is the type of world that the citizens of Oceania must live in, ruled by fear and under force every day. The names of the different ministries for example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In no public or private utterance was it ever admitted that the three powers had at any time been grouped along different lines.? Although throughout the story, the conditions of these wars were constantly changing, it made no difference to the masses, and the current ?truth? was all that mattered. ?Oceania was at war with Eurasia: therefore Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia? (Orwell, pg 35). The truth is whatever the government wants it to be, and the people accept it at face value, a concept cleverly worded as ?reality control.? (Orwell, pg. 36) Likewise in today?s society, even though the people live under the rule of a democratic republic in the U.S., a large portion of the news that we receive is distorted and filtered, many times the truth is not what it appears to be. Being a democracy does not stop that from happening. Furthermore, like the citizens of Oceania, we as citizens often accept the information that we receive from the media as absolute truth, not questioning what we hear, even though we have the privilege of doing so. In the totalitarian society of 1984, the government alters history constantly and changes it to fit the predictions and needs of the party, so that they always come out ahead. The Party destroys any evidence that the past has been altered, and asserts absolute correctness and truth. One might argue that it would be impossible to get rid of all past evidence in today?s world, because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A modern day hero usually shows these types of acts. However, an Anglo–Saxon hero shows some of the opposite traits, including violence. Beowulf is one of a good example of an Anglo–Saxon hero. "Behind some broad linden shield: my hands Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster" (267–269).Using only your hands to battle someone not only shows the bravery of him, but shows super strength because bare hands have a small strength to them unlike swords that have an amazing amount of strength. Beowulf decides to show the other Geats how it is really done. Within the battle with Grendel's mother, Beowulf uses a sword to defeat her named Naegling. "Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed with their the best of all weapons, but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length. He drew it from its scabbard, broken the chain on its hilt, and then savage, now, angry and desperate, lifted it over his head and struck with all the strength head left, caught her in the neck and cut through"(530–539). Naegling is one of the most heaviest swords that needs a lot of power to hoist and obtain its strength. Beowulf used all of his might and God was able to give Beowulf the strength he needed to lift Naegling with its cover and use it against Grendel's mother. • 77. Beowulf And Achilles: A Modern Day Hero Lexie Filloon English IV–5B Carlson, K When labeling a hero, society seeks out certain traits or variables they find important to fulfill this job. "We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly across culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis" (Cannon). The modern day hero has evolved based on the needs of the people of the time. For example, in the year 1200, war was fought by man–to–man combat resulting in great warriors to be viewed as heroes. However, in today's society, the requirement of a hero has changed. We depict them based on the lives they have saved and how they have accomplished that deed. Many times, martyrs are considered heroes because they have died for the people they have protected, but not all heroes come face to face with war.
