How Did Religion Influence English Colonization
I think they had a great impact on colonization. Religious had a greater impact than Economics on
English colonization.
Encouraging factors for America's survival include the effect of the Great Awakening and varied
interpretations of this movement.
However, factors that held them back were the American colonies continued reliance on England for
survival. Religion had a greater impact on English colonization.
To understand how America's current balance among national low, local community practice and
individual freedom of belief evolved it's helpful to understand some of the common experiences and
patterns around religion in colonial culture in the period between 1600 and 1776.
In the early years of what later became the United States, Christian ... Show more content on

But secularists also should learn from Christians. They should recognize that similar environmental
"preconditions" had existed at other times when revival did not occur and that no exact correlation
can be established between the outbreak of revival and any set of social conditions. The final
evaluation, as in most such historical questions, will depend less upon the evidence of history than
upon the convictions of historians.
Effects
Mercantilism is an economic system that dominated the major European trading nations during the
sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. This "mercantile system" was based on the premise
that national wealth and power were best served by increasing exports and collecting precious
metals in return. It superseded the medieval feudal organization in Western Europe, especially in the
Netherlands, France, and England. Domestically, this led to some of the first instances of significant
government intervention and control over the economy, and it was during this period that much of
the modern capitalist system was established. Internationally, mercantilism encouraged the many
European wars of the period and fueled European

discovered various features in North America such as: The Great Lakes, Quebec, and New York.
The French established settlements in these areas and their impact is very evident on Canada and
North America today. Exploration also allowed the French to interact with Native American tribes in
those regions in good ways and bad ways. This interaction benefited Native Americans in good
ways because it began healthy trade between the French and them. Additionally, French trade gave
Native Americans access to guns and other goods that the Native Americans didn't have. This would
change the dynamic of war amongst Native Americans forever. On the other hand, French
interaction with Native Americans was bad for the native tribes because the French made ... Show

English colonization focused on religion and economy. Ever since the religious revolt against the
Catholics, staged by Martin Luther in the 16th century, there were many religions formed which
believed they had divine revelation from God. England was a land that was rich with religion and
unlike the French and Spanish, they were not Catholic. There were many Protestants who resided in
England during colonization. So, according to Early American History to 1877, "to zealous English
Protestants, a colony in America would offer a bulwark against Catholic Spain and France." The
English wanted to get a religious foothold in America so that all inhabitants in America wouldn't be
tainted with Catholic beliefs. In addition, to England, a colony in America offered vast economic
trade. Therefore England tried to establish colonies early on with Jamestown and the Roanoke
Colony, but neither succeeded. They experienced hunger and hostility from the Indians and
eventually had to leave. But, the English were able to rebound. They benefited immensely from
tobacco and learned how to survive in the New World. So their objective of taking advantage of the
economy of the New World and establishing Protestant colonies was

The Origins Of English Colonization Of The New World
The origins of American English date back to the beginnings of the seventeenth century and the first
successful colonization of the New World. Although the first English explorers led by Walter
Raleigh had landed on the coast some three decades before, the attempts to establish a settlement
failed due to unexpected conflicts with Native Americans. Jamestown, the first English colony
named after James I was established in 1607. It was but one of many settlements that promptly
started to fill the coast and adjacent islands. In 1620, a ship called the Mayflower landed in
Plymouth, Massachusetts. Its passengers were Puritans, also known as the 'Pilgrim Fathers', seeking
to set up a colony purified (therefore Puritans) from the Church of England

Effects Of Foreign Literature On A Colonial Population...
How are the effects of foreign literature on a colonial population explored by author Lloyd Jones in
his novel, Mister Pip?
Lloyd Jones's novel, Mister Pip, is set in Bougainville in the 1990's, in the period of time following
the abandonment of the Panguna mine by the Australians and the subsequent civil war and blockade.
This backdrop provides the perfect environment for Jones to use foreign literature to explore ideas
relating to post–colonialism, both on an individual and community level. This exploration provides
much food–for–thought for the postcolonial critic, including issues such as cultural hegemony, the
struggle for identity when confronted with hybridity, and the role of the literary canon in European
colonisation.
In The Empire Writes Back (Ashcroft, et al.), the term 'post–colonial' is defined as covering "all the
culture affected by the imperial process from the moment of colonization to the present day". Post–
colonial theory, then, provides an insight into the complicated power dynamic that occurs between
the coloniser and the colonised, and, at its simplest, responds to colonialism with emphasis on the
effects, both positive and negative, on the coloniser and the colonised. Having read Jones's Mister
Pip with a post–colonial lens, it becomes clear that Mr Watts and Matilda are a metaphor for the
coloniser and the colonised. Within this metaphor, they each take on unbalanced roles in different
relationships, and are represented in different ways, though Mr

The Main Contours Of English Colonization In The 17th...
1. The main contours of English Colonization in the 17th century were Protestant motives to strike
Catholicism, along with solving England's social crisis. With the rumors of the Spanish Empire's
atrocities reaching England, one motive to colonize the America's was to strike the Catholics, and
save the natives from captivity (Foner 51). This shows an interesting aspect of the English
Colonization: the English allowed their people to go colonize just to strike the opposing religious
country. Along with this, England sending emigrants over solved their social crisis. Because of
England's growing population and economy, the amount of peasants in cities grew. This is because
of landlords using land for sheep, which kicked out peasants from their land (Foner 51–52). England
hoped that some people of the lower classes would then go to America: to be out of the big cities
where important people were, while still helping England in it's economy. 2. Some obstacles the
English settlers in the Chesapeake overcame were indentured servitude and getting land from the
natives. A majority of the settlers were indentured servants, and for all of the servants, they had to
do a certain number of years of labor to be free (Foner 54). This was an obstacle that a lot of settlers
had to overcome. It was a tough obstacle, with the labor being really intense, and many indentured
servants were dying. Another obstacle that settlers overcame was the need for land, which meant
dealing with the Indians.

Differences Between English, Spanish, And Spanish...
Colonization was such an important prosses to the world we live in today. Explorer would cross the
ocean and overcome many obstacles to try to find new land for their countries. The lands that they
did find were distinct in many different ways. The English, French, and the Spanish each had unique
settlements and geography. Each one had different governments, and religions. Lastly, each colony
had separate and different relations with the Native Americans. Each of these three colonies had
very different settlement patterns, and geographies. First most of all the English colonies were
created by the royal people of the colony, and were settled in Quebec, Montreal, and Louisiana.
Some of the very first trading's began were in Virginia and Massachusetts, but then they all began to
spread. On the other hand, in France the first colonies that they began to trade with was in
Newfoundland, but then continued with places like parts of Canada, and the Mississippi River.
Lastly, Spain has the longest colonization story. Colonization in Spain began in 1492 when
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for India but ended up in Central America,
which became a thriving colony of Spain becoming a huge value due to the cash crop of sugar. He
was looking for ways to become rich and spread the Catholic religion. They didn't bring that, but

The English actually got along with them and had a decent relationship. Colonist relied on Native
Americans for things like trade and survival. French had respect for the Native Americans, but
mostly because they wanted their alliance. Then the Spanish saw Americans as heathens. They didn't
hate each other but didn't necessarily get along. The relationship that they shared was important
because they lived together and rely on each other to live on the land that they are

Compare And Contrast English Colonization And Spanish...
From the mid 1500's to the 1700's, people from all over Europe flocked to the vast lands of North
America. Spain and England quickly became the most dominant European presences in the
Americas. Citizens of the two countries had very different experiences in the New World. This was
partially due to their different interactions with Native Americans, religions and their different
motivations for coming to the New World. Although rivals at the time, Spain and England's
colonization efforts shared many similarities. Motivation for coming to the New World greatly
influenced Spanish and British colonization. The Spanish are said to have had three distinct reasons;
God, glory and gold. God meaning the conversion of natives, glory meaning the claiming of new
land for the Spanish empire and gold meaning the desire to find gold to bring wealth back to Spain.
The British colony of Jamestown shared the desire to find gold. Unlike the Spaniards, the British
didn't plan on permanently settling in America. However, these plans changed and Jamestown
became a settlement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The British relied on the Algonquians to exchange goods for food, and to teach them how to survive
on the strange land. The Spaniards took advantage of the Pueblos, forcing them to work on farms
and to follow their religion. In the end, both relationships with the Native Americans fell apart.
Pueblo Indians became tired of being treated so poorly, and launched attacks on the Spaniards. In
contrast, British colonists initiated the aggression towards the Algonquians after the Algonquians
withdrew all contact. As you can see, the British had a positive and equal relationship with the
natives for the most part. While the Spaniards always had a negative and controlling relationship
with the natives. Both the Spanish and the British could not have survived without the Native

What Was The Impact Of Religion On English Colonization
Religion had a greater impact on English colonization than Economics. When the colonies started to
increase, Europe saw a large growth in migration. American survival had included the Great
Awakening which proceeded in the mid–eighteenth centuries. The reason religion had greater
impact on English colonization in North America is because it has been the pouring unit that had
gotten America closer to the point of becoming a country. On the other hand, the economic
viewpoint of the American colonies forced them to give an answer back to England. The bond
between the colonies and the nation had reformed from the productive trade to the armed battle.
Religion help out to form the colonial society. Comparing the ways it did so in the following
regions: Chesapeake, New England (Virginia and the South), and Middle Atlantic. Religion had
played a large part in history, and in change of the colonization of America, the spiritual beliefs had
been very important. In a countless amount of cases the reason for moving to the New World. For

Many of these people left to Europe because they were not allowed to believe in their religious
beliefs independently. There were no churches that existed at the time, so the people went gathering
in their homes and prayed together. There had been many different religious groups that all came up
to the east seacoast. In New England the people were mainly Puritans who lived very strictly during
that period of time. Pennsylvania became the home of the Quakers. They thought that everyone was
equal in front of God. Southern migrants had largely been Baptists and Anglicans. As time passed
by, the immigrants from other nations took their belief to themselves and had started spreading their
beliefs across the colonies. By the end of the 18th century, Catholics, Jews and other units had

The Art of Persuasion by the Hakluyt Cousins
It is quite understandable for a person persuading others of an action, to inflate the outcome of that
action in the hopes that they will agree to participate. The Hakluyt cousins had persuasion down to a
science and when they released their writings about colonization, they did more than just persuade.
The Hakluyt's brothers proclaimed outcomes that to humans in the 21st Century appear to be solely
unrealistic wishes. With their statements about the undiscovered riches or the flourishing trade to be
established it is not surprising to think that these reasons were not valid, but like Hakluyt the
younger intended, the "Inducements" and "Discourse" they wrote were mere justifications and
blueprints. The cousins never promised wealth or any other form of riches they merely focused on
the commodities they believed would be available. Opponents of the Hakluyt brothers believe they
were unjust in their reasons for colonizing because their statements were based on desires, not facts.
While it is true that some aims of the Hakluyt's were unrealistic, the cousin's arguments for
colonizing were more than valid because the Hakluyt's provided economic arguments that were
within England's reach and completely feasible, they inspired religious compromise, and they
provided the nation protection through the creation of jobs and a Navy. During the mid–1500's,
England was in turmoil and the Hakluyt cousins provided economic hope for the country. There
were many arguments that drove the

Spanish additionally accompanied directions to change over the locals to Catholicism. They put

Not financed through regal support, the Virginia Colony was at first controlled by a business entity.
Like Spain, be that as it may, most early Virginia pioneers were male, youthful bound servants
looking for a superior future in a place where there is evident boundless open door. This was not
valid in other English provinces, for example, in New England, that offered families as the standard
in nearby groups. Different settlements were established by religious gatherings escaping badgering
in England or the mainland wars of religion. Explorers, Puritans, Quakers, and Huguenots created
groups, regularly in the wake of making bargains with neighborhood Native American people
groups. Not at all like the Spanish, there was never a purposeful exertion to change over the local
people groups (prominent exemptions may be the preacher exercises of the Moravians among the
Shawnee and Cherokee). English pioneers discovered no gold or silver. Rather, they secured
productive ventures in the development of tobacco and rice, boat building and lumber, and New
England angling. It might be contended that, not at all like the Spanish, these enhanced structures
procured more prominent long haul and maintainable benefits for England, at any rate until 1783.
Correlations in the middle of Spanish and English pioneer examples show that critical contrasts
existed. There were, on the other hand, eminent

Multi Layer Insulation Research Paper
When considering the colonization of space, scientists most frequently contemplate how to deal with
food, air, and water, the three basic needs of living. These are vital requirements for all living things.
On Earth the atmosphere protects you from harmful radiation among other factors. A settlement
outside of earth lacks the atmosphere and magnetic field protecting us from the sun. Unlike earth, in
space, the radiation and heat from the sun becomes harmful to all life. The radiation destroys the
DNA inside cells. Then the heat prevents the body from operating. It will be no easy feat living in
space. The temperatures will swing on a lot of factors, for example its axis, orbit, etc. According to

The multi layer shielding will also help insulate thes space station because according to NASA.gov,
the outside of the International Space Station ranges from temperatures of 250 deg. F. to –250 deg.
F. The multi layer insulation is made of three materials that each play an important role. There is
also certain order each layer has to be placed. NASA also uses some of this insulation. The first
material, being the farthest from the actual space settlement, is Kapton. Kapton is a great insulation
for cold temperatures. It is also a Polyimide film which are known for their high heat resistance.
Kapton comes before aluminized Mylar. Kapton is really heavy and it protects the fragile
aluminized Mylar. Aluminized Mylar helps with radiation protection and heat protective. The last
material is Dacron. Dacron has hydrogen content that absorbs radiation. You then would keep
repeating the order and Dacron goes at the end to prevent conduction between layers. The order
would be Kapton, Aluminized Mylar, Dacron, Kapton, Aluminized Mylar, Dacron over and over
again. This is the way BEARTH™ will protect itself from radiation and will also protect us from
more heat coming in. This does not stop the heat inside from leaving, every thing that creates heat in

English Motives for Colonization in North America Essay
Why would anyone want to go through the trouble of colonizing? The English had such motives that
compelled them to leave their motherland. It was for the reasons of seeking freedom, seeing there
was nothing in Britain for them, and success accessed by other nations. England set up strict rules
and laws. Those who sought a bit of adventure naturally took off. Others were motivated to find
religious freedom. Lord Baltimore set up Maryland for the sake of his fellow Catholics. Since
England was primarily Protestant, a great deal of religious persecution occurred consequently the
Catholic safe haven was born. Religious persecution also bound the Pilgrims to leave England and
settle in Holland, where there was more religious freedom. However, ... Show more content on

Spain was bathing in profits from what the New World had to offer. So in 1606the Virginia
Company of London was organized and sponsored the Virginia Colony. Organizers of the company
wanted to expand English trade and obtain a wider market for English manufactured goods. They
naturally hoped for financial profit from their investment in shares of company stock. Queen
Elizabeth played an enormous role in motivating the English peoples. She herself was secretly a
financial backer to Sir Francis Drake. The defeat of the Spanish Armada was a significant event. Not
only did England gain control of the Atlantic sea lanes but it also sparked a sense of patriotism.
Spanish expansions in the New World were actions that needed to be limited. In a way, many also
attempted to colonize out of spite; to establish England's greatness. In conclusion, England had
reasonable motives to emigrate and colonize. Although Raleigh's efforts to found a permanent
colony off the coast of Virginia ultimately failed with the mysterious destruction of the Roanoke
Island colony in 1587, awakened popular interest in a permanent colonizing venture. Still others
looked for the much–sought–after route to the Orient in North America. In addition, the New World
provided new resources and land that was desired by the English people. The Renaissance also
played a vitale role. In many ways, it promoted colonization and

Equilibrium: Analysis: Colonization
In a two dimensional shape, a centre is point that is equidistant from all edges of a shape.
Hence, without the edges, a centre cannot be determined. The idea of centre is used to depict
colonisation where a coloniser becomes a centre to the margin that the colonised are made into. The
idea of the centre was not only geographical, but also, political and social. The centre is
geographically where the ruler(s) resides. Politically, centre is the entity with which/whom, power
rests. Socially, the opinion makers are considered the centre. During colonisation, the coloniser
becomes the most power politically. The coloniser is the opinion maker, and, geographically, they
rule the colony based out of their homeland. The aim of the centre is to bring into their influence, the
occupants of the margin or periphery.
.
I have chosen a visual text(movie) called, "Equilibrium" to better understand and explain the
concept of the centre–margin relationship. The movie is a science–fiction and is set in the future
after the third world war. Due to the war, everything is destroyed and the leaders come together to
form a council that takes to a new approach to governing people to prevent any future world wars.

Consolidation of power with a certain entity, be it, place, person, state etc, makes it the centre. Who
or what ever the centre has power over becomes the margin. This concept of centre–margin might
pose a dilemma similar to that of the chicken and the egg, as to which came first, the centre or the
margin. The text can be used to clear this confusion. The rulers came together to build a system of
government. People submitting to the form of government made the government powerful, thereby,
making them the centre of the periphery that the citizens formed. Physical centre in the movie is a
building called the "Equilibrium" which was the headquarters of the

Spanish Conquest Vs English Colonization Essay

English Colonization Vs Spanish Conquest The history of colonial North America centers primarily
on the struggle of England, France, and Spain to gain control of the continent. This settler took
different effort. These differences has positively and negatively affected the New World's. Spain, for
instance, were governed by autocratic sovereigns whose rule was absolute; Spain colonists went to
America as slaves of the Crown. The English colonists, on the other hand, enjoyed far more freedom
and were able to manage themselves as long as they followed English law and were loyal to the king
(Granburyisd). Earliest colonists were in Virginia and Massachusetts but soon scattered all along the

Although the British crown did sponsor the voyage of John Cabot, who founded the fisheries around
Newfoundland, royal interest waned when mineral resources were not found. In the crown's
absence, private merchant based companies moved in to fund colonization efforts. Unlike the
Spanish, English colonizers were granted funds to settle in North America. Instead of revenue from
America returning to the state, it went to the investors and stockholders of the private companies.
While the Virginia Company sponsored the voyage of Captain Christopher Newport in return for the
revenue that would be created from the new colony of Jamestown, charters were granted to those
fleeing religious persecution as well. Building on the ideals of religious toleration sparked by the
Enlightenment, the Massachusetts Bay Company, Puritans, was granted a charter in 1629. ("Eclectic

Comparing The Spanish And The Colish And English...
Although the Spanish and the British began colonizing the New World at relatively the same time
their colonization efforts were extremely different. Although they had many differences they often
used similar tactics in order to reach their goals. The differences include the two nations different
reasoning to explore the New World, their relationship with the Natives, and the types of
governments that they attempted to set up. Although some of these differences might not seem as if
they are very important, they helped one nation do you better than the other one when it came to
colonization efforts. First, the Spanish and English reasoning behind exploration and settlement of
the New World was extremely different. This also means that the type of people that came from both
nations to settle the New World were also very different. The Spanish wanted to explore the New
World for what people like to call "Glory, God, and Gold". Glory means that they wanted the fame
and credit for being the first nation to find the New World and settle it. God is a Synecdoche for
religious duties. Gold is the easiest term to understand because it means that they wanted riches such
as gold. Because of the fact that these were the main three things that Spain wanted to get out of the
New World, they only sent over people that would help them achieve these three things. This means
that they mostly sent over soldiers and missionaries. The soldiers would use brute force on the
natives if they did not

tackled: creating food. The food provided by NASA can only last so long, and supply drops can
takes months to arrive if Mars is on the optimal position, and well over a year if it is not. Because of
this, colonists need a way to ensure that they have a sustainable and sufficient source of food, so
they remain properly nourished and do not starve to death. This is the exact problem seen in the
popular film, and the novel it was based on, The Martian. To surmount this obstacle, Mark Watney

Fortunately, if the effort pays off, humanity could have a new home after Earth is no longer

colonization, they can be overcome with mankind's technology, the resources already present on
Mars, and old–fashioned human ingenuity. India has developed a method to drastically decrease the
cost of space missions, and SpaceX has successfully re–launched a previously used rocket; with
their contributions, a Mars mission no longer has to break the bank. Thanks to NASA, colonists will
be able to sustain themselves for a considerable amount of time using oxygenators and water

"It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut

Neil Armstrong said this about his famous trip in which he was the first man to have stepped on the

its birth. Now humanity has managed to tame Earth and the next step is to traverse into the reaches

Clearly, the worth of these minerals is apparent and there is no reason why humanity should not take
advantage of such an opportunity. This does not mean that people are not beginning to pioneer the
new field of space mining. Companies such as "Planetary Resources of Washington ... [and] Deep
Space Industries of Virginia hopes to be harvesting metals from asteroids by 2020" (Slezak 8). Even
now these people are researching new ways to improve the efficiency of techniques that would be
used for this. The major problem that exists is that there is not a large industry in existence that
could use these resources to their full potential. "Companies are eying the iron, silicon and
aluminium in lunar soil and asteroids, which could be used in 3D printers to make spare parts or
machinery." (Slezak 9) This industry, other than electronics, is really the only one that would heavily
benefit from space exploration making it a less than stellar opportunity for businesses in the current
state of the global economy. According to Eric Anderson in his interview "Life on Mars" as

The Paleo-Indians And The English Colonization Of North...
The initial inhabitants of North and South America, known as Paleo–Indians, arrived here over
thousands of years ago. It is believed that the Native American forefathers reached this country via a
piece of land that linked Asia to North America. Upon arrival, the Paleo–Indians split into numerous
tribes. They broke off into a number of tribes, including but not limited to, the Paiutes, the
Shoshonis, the Algonquians, the Aztecs, and the Mayans. The Paiutes and the Shoshonis tended to
migrate seasonally. They are both tribes that settled in Nevada and Utah. The Algonquian tribe
inhabited present–day northeastern United States and eastern Canada. They preferred to remain in
their territories, they rarely migrated. The Aztecs, a bellicose nation, colonized what is now Mexico
and Guatemala. The Aztecs had gained power over central Mexico before the Spanish accessed the
new world. The Mayans also settled in Mexico and Guatemala. They were a very intelligent nation
that already had writing and mathematics systems in place by the time the Spanish arrived. The
various indigenous tribes then settled in a variety of places across the Americas and formed their
own religious and cultural practices.

Pros And Cons For English Colonization

Motivations for English Colonization Greed was one of the leading causes to the English
exploration of the Americas. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Spain took the lead in exploring
and setting up colonies much in North America which in turn caused the English to become wary of
a possible new powerhouse and threat. Along with a fear of threat was also a want to inhabit the new
land and thus gain trading partners, find treasure, and expand before Spain had a chance to flood
more of the vast new land. Elizabeth rapidly set out to build a colony, first giving a charter to Sir
Humphrey Gilbert, Sir Walter Raleigh, no such English colony would exist until James I came to
rule (Shi and Tindall 48–49). Eventually, Religious tension, a want for gold, and a desire for new
goods led the English to expand and configure colonies in the New World. After Elizabeth's death,
the Church of England went into a time of crisis. Many people found the rituals, bishops, and
elaborate costumes and jewels to be unnecessary to religion. Along with this, many people started to
view bishops of the church as dictatorial leaders who should have no part in government. The
Puritans were one of the first groups to question the showy form of church which would eventually
lead them to the new world due to being banished by the king for not following the basic principles.
The Pilgrims were another group that wanted that would

English Colonization Summary
In discussing the English colonization of the Chesapeake, many people often adhere to Anglocentric
and male–dominated perspectives. In adhering to such perspectives, one fails to consider the
significant role of women, family units, Native Americans, and imperial politics in colonization.
Although males had their own significant role, the development of the early English colonies
involved a complex interplay of many different historical actors. The readings for this week force
one to consider these other historical actors and the context of English colonization. Collectively,
these readings and documents propagate a reassessment of the English colonies in Virginia and
Maryland. In reassessing English colonization, context and background ... Show more content on

The 'saving grace' for the Chesapeake was the plant known as tobacco which grew well in the
Virginian environment and was popular in England. John Rolfe indicates that tobacco production
was so prevalent that many colonists were failing to till their corn, a food source. The historian
James Horn takes the significance of tobacco a step further. He argues that tobacco production was
the foundation around which Chesapeake society was reorganized. Differing from the original
colonial vision, tobacco would affect colonial opportunities and philosophies regarding blacks,
poverty, and labor. Critical to this production of tobacco was a significant labor source. This demand
was met by the increased introduction of indentured servitude. As relayed in indenture forms,
laborers served a set period of time, such as five years, in exchange for payment for transportation
across the Atlantic and other provisions. Together tobacco and indentured servitude acted as the
socio–economic foundations of the expanding

Heart Of Darkness Essay
Conrad's book Heart of Darkness follows Marlow's oral telling of his journey into the heart of
Africa. Three men listen to him recount his journey up the Congo River, into the heart of Africa,
darkness and Man himself. Conrad uses Kurtz, the chief of the Inner Station, and the natives to
convey certain messages.
Firstly, Conrad raises the expectations of readers and arouses their curiosity through the portrayal of
Kurtz. As one journeys into the heart of Africa with Marlow in his story, one come across various
characters that give their opinions of Kurtz. Along the journey, the common descriptions of Kurtz
are generally positive and speak of his achievements. The first time the readers are introduced to
Kurtz is when Marlow meets the company's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Modern Humans And The Existence Of The Planet
Modern humans have been on Earth for more than 200,000 years. Although many people feel that
200,000 years is a fairly long time for us to have existed as a species, it is quite the opposite. The
earth is estimated to have been made 4.54 billion years ago. Life as we know it is estimated to have
begun 4 billion years ago. When comparing the existence of the human race to the existence of the
planet we live on or the existence of all forms of life, it becomes very apparent that the humans
species time on this planet has been relatively miniscule. If you took the entire history of the 13.7
billion year old universe and compressed it into one year, the first humans would not even show up
until 10:30 pm on December 31st.
Without having a good understanding of how short our stay on this planet has been, it's very hard for
people to imagine a future where humans are no longer an existing species. With how short of a time
span we have existed here, and how many species have come and gone in the history of earth, it is
not too irrational to fear the possibility of human extinction. Clearly this isn't a threat that is
anywhere near imminent, but that is no reason to give it any less thought. A huge flaw of the human
race is that we often tend to be short–sighted. We focus on problems that are affecting us now or will
affect us in the near future, and this is the reason why getting people to do anything to prevent
climate change or even just accept is so difficult. The possibility

104 men landed in Virginia in 1607 at a place they named Jamestown. This was the first permanent
English settlement in the New World. Thirteen years later, 102 settlers aboard the Mayflower landed
in Massachusetts at a place they named Plymouth. With these two colonies, English settlement in
North America was born.
Jamestown offered anchorage and a good defensive position. Warm climate and fertile soil allowed
large plantations to prosper. Plymouth provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. Cold
climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding,
fishing and trade.
Economic motives prompted colonization in Virginia. The Virginia Company of London, organized
in 1606, sponsored the Virginia Colony. Organizers of the company wanted to expand English trade
and obtain a wider market for English manufactured goods. They naturally hoped for financial profit
from their investment in shares of company stock. Freedom from religious persecution motivated
the Pilgrims to leave England and settle in Holland, where there was more religious freedom.
However, after a number of years the Pilgrims felt that their children were being corrupted by the
liberal Dutch lifestyle and were losing their English heritage. News of the English Colony in
Virginia motivated them to leave Holland and settle in the New World.
Inexperience, unwillingness to work, and the lack of wilderness survival skills led to bickering,

The initial colonies were very unified both religiously and politically. There was little variance and a
strong sense of identity.
The continued influx of colonizers would fall to a trickle of only a hundred or so per year after the
English Civil War in 1642 and remain subdued until the American Revolution (Reader 's Companion
to American History). The colonies which were formed after the English Civil War were much more
diverse in their makeup than were the initial Puritan colonies. These colonies formed over a longer
period of time and their populations were composed of people who had left England for a varying
degree of reasons. In addition, rather than being composed of immigrants from one primary area in
England, the English colonists were more geographically diverse as well.
The English had limited dealings with the Natives of the areas they colonized, preferring to operate
their colonies as autonomously as possible, depending more on interaction with the respective
mother countries than with the Native Americans (Foner and Garraty). England would become,
arguably, the most successful of the northern European countries that colonized, eventually
extending their range all the way into the interior of the new continent (Foner and Garraty).

Native Americans, they were interested in their

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Space Inwards
A space elevator is a tower rising from earth into orbit with a counterweight, a deployment booster
that will unfurl two thin strips of ribbon stretching two earths for orbit (Lemley 97), at the end of it.
The idea for space elevators is quite old dating back to the writing of The Bible. It was first stated in
the book of Genesis it was called the Tower of Babel, which met to reach the heavens. For the past
three decades, space elevators were fiction that was hinting at a new age of exploration and
innovations. However, today many science facilities consider the technology as infeasible and
expensive. The space elevator will probably not work because the disadvantages would out weight
the advantage of it. If space elevators were to be built it would lead into a new era for human–
beings. But will the earth's limitation cause the construction to fail? Finding a place to put the
elevator and finding material strong enough to support the elevator are two disadvantage that would
cause the elevator to fail. The place to put the space elevator is one of the biggest problem in
building it. There are specific conditions a space elevator would need to be situated in. A place
where there is no extreme weather and natural disasters. The platform would have to be somewhere
in the ocean close to the equator (Aravind 93). The reason why in the ocean is because there are less
natural disasters and cases of extreme weather in the ocean than on land (Castillo et al.). Since, the

The Influence Of Spanish French And English Colonization
The world as we know it could not exist without the influence of Spanish, French, and English
colonization. Each of great European Colonies share some similarities with one another but all
varied greatly in structure, dominance, and influence. This essay will break down many of the
aspects that made up each colony which will lead to a better understanding of what American
Colonial life was like.
The Spanish, French, and English all established rather successful colonies in the Americas but the
locations of these colonies varied by founding country. The Spanish crown–sponsored conquests
gained riches for Spain and helped expand its empire. Originally claiming the Bahamas and most of
South America the Spanish Empire eventually claimed most of the southern and southwestern
regions of the North America, as well as sections of the California coast. The French were likely as
ambitious but found it difficult to compare to the vast dominance of the Spanish in the Americas.
Their first colonies were trading posts in Newfoundland and eastern Canada. But French posts were
established in the St. Lawrence valley, part of Canada, and the Mississippi River area. Their empire
eventually reigned from very northeast Canada all the way south to Louisiana. For the English most
colonies were established by royal charter. Their earliest settlements were in Virginia and
Massachusetts. However, they eventually spread all along the Atlantic coast, from Maine to Georgia,
and as far West as the

Difference Between Spanish And English Colonization
During the 15th through 17th centuries, advancements in technology and the desire for new
resources spurred the exploration of the New World for both Spain and England. Spain's interest in
exploration soon surpassed the rest of the countries in the Old World and the nation began to claim
the majority of territory in Central and South America. Spain sent conquistadores to assert their
dominance in the New World through violent conquest which resulted in difficult relations with
native populations. Although the English did not settle in North America until the early 17th century,
well past the period of the Spanish conquest, their methods of colonization were more successful in

This caused a trade imbalance, thus hurting the Spanish economy and making it harder for the
colonies in the New World to become successful settlements. Because the Spanish Crown had little
interest in creating long–lasting colonies in New World for any purpose other than to gain wealth for
the mother country, the group of Spaniards that came to America only consisted of conquistadores,
missionaries, and soldiers. It is important to note that no Spanish women made the journey to the
Americas, which contributed to Spain's issue with founding substantial settlements. All of these
factors made it difficult for Spain to benefit off colonization because the country lacked a strong,
stable economy in the New World. On the other hand, England was able to establish permanent
settlements in the Americas more efficiently than the Spanish because the purpose of colonization
was not solely to acquire wealth, but also to flee religious and political persecution. Since British
colonists had a comparatively more compelling reason to inhabit the Americas than the Spanish,
they were more likely to permanently settle and contribute to the economy through commerce and
agriculture. Their economic situation differed from the Spanish because instead of earning wealth
through conquest and exploitation, industry in English colonies was based on farming, fishing, and
exports like tobacco and lumber. The economy was also more

Ever Since I was in high school, I was always interested in learning about English Colonization in

like the history of the world, the history of United State also influences by exploration and
colonization. Thereby, I would like to discuss about the early settlement of Roanoke and English
colonization to the New World. Most importantly, there are four main reasons why the English come
over to colonize in the New World. These are enclosure movement, protestant reformation, merchant
fleet and mercantilism.
The first reason is enclosure movement. This is when the farmlands are enclosed due to increase of
wool trade. Because of this, the owners of the lands got restricted to their land for the benefit of

Preservationism is problematic to space colonization because it requires that everything natural
holds intrinsic value, including rocks and planetary surfaces (Fogg 209). If preservationism was the
accepted ethical theory, it would rule space colonization as immoral. Fogg finishes his paper by
formulating an argument against preservationism. Fogg's first premise is that humans are just as
natural as any other natural object: "Human consciousness, culture, creativity and the technological
artefacts produced thereby are thus not unnatural. They have arisen from the same physics that gave
birth to the cosmos and the same process of biological evolution" (Fogg 210). His second premise
states that preservationism, by making it impermissible for man to change to planet, "amounts to
saying that humans actually have the lowest degree of intrinsic worth of any class of formed object.
Rocks are free to rust and crumble over the aeons, asteroids and meteorites free to batter the Martian
surface [...]" (210). Fogg's article serves two purposes in the discussion of space colonization. One,
it makes it clear that there are certain ethical theories, like preservationism, that could in fact provide
an argument against space development if supported. Second, the article offers a convincing

The Spanish, French, and English Colonization.
The Spanish, French, and English Colonization Have you ever wondered where why the many
different countries in Europe came to America to explore and colonize? There were two main
concepts that drew the Europeans to America: the excitement and profit of the "New World", and the
past histories of their countries. The English, French, and Spanish each came to the Americas in
search of a new beginning; a fresh start in which they could escape past torment and capture new
wealth. However, each motive defined the character of each settlement. With the inventions of more
efficient ships and the perfection of navigational instruments, the Spanish (as well as England and
France) gained a curiosity to explore and find a way to Asia by water and ... Show more content on

You shall judge of the good air by the people; for some part of that coast where the lands are low,

colonists that they wanted to be successful; possibly even an imitation of Spain and their
achievements. These statements suggest that the English didn't come to the Americas simply to
plunder gold and riches from the native Indians. As stated in A People and a Nation, "Unlike the
Spanish, other European nations did not immediately start to colonize the coasts their sailors had
explored. They were interested in exploiting the natural wealth of the region, not in conquering
territories."# However, the English did, at times, exploit the Indians for their profit. Actually, they
came to America for a number of reasons, but mainly to escape religious persecution and seek a new
start in the world. People whom were mere peasants in England, and possessed no land, would soon
become owners of many acres of their very own property. In England, trades grew poor due to the
inability to trade with Spain due to religious separation. During the early 16th century, King Henry

The Role Of English Colonization In The New World
The first colonization of the English was not in the New World but rather in Ireland. However, they
have come in contact with the New World when King Henry VII sponsored John Cabot to sail to the
northeastern coast of North America in 1497, only five years after Spain's. Unlike Spain, English's
main interest in colonization was land instead of gold or silver. In addition, many people developed
an interest of colonization as a response to social, economic, and religious problems in the
sixteenth–century. Much of the English colonization and settlement was rather difficult due to the
unusual and new conditions of the land. However, with the help of the natives of the New World,
many people survived such conditions regardless of their scarce resources. ... Show more content on

journey and reached the American coast in the spring of 1607. Once they sailed into the Chesapeake
and into the river they called James, they established a colony on the peninsula of the river and
called it Jamestown. The choice of their settlement was a mistake of their own. Their choice of an
inland setting would not only provide security from the natives, but it would also make it difficult
for survival, due to its swampy conditions surrounded by thick woods. Many of the colonists were
not immune to the local diseases, such as malaria, which made it even more difficult for the
colonists to adapt to the environment. They focused on growing food and building communities
rather than searching for goods, such as gold. With Jamestown on the verge of collapsing, the
settlers had no choice but to turn to the natives for help. The English quickly learned to hunt, fish,

Jamestown's survival. John Smith was known for

Disadvantages Of Space Colonization
Space colonization (also called space settlement, or extraterrestrial colonization) is permanent
human habitation off planet Earth.
Many arguments have been made for space colonizationThe two most common are survival of
human civilization and the biosphere in case of a planetary–scale disaster (natural or man–made),
and the vast resources in space for expansion of human society.
No space colonies have been built so far. Currently, the building of a space colony would present a
set of huge challenges both technological and economic. Space settlements would have to provide
for nearly all (or all) the material needs of hundreds or thousands of humans, in an environment out
in space that is very hostile to human life. They would involve technologies, such as controlled
ecological life support systems, that have yet to be developed in any meaningful way. They would
also have to deal with the as yet unknown issue of how humans would behave and thrive in such
places long–term. Because of the present cost of sending anything from the surface of the Earth into
orbit (around $2,500 per pound to orbit, expected to further decrease)[2] a space colony would
currently be a massively expensive project.
There are no plans for building one by any large–scale organization, either government or private.
However, there have been many proposals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Question #1: Discuss the English colonization and settlement in the New World (North America)
that would eventually end up with thirteen colonies for the English. How did the English
colonization and settlement in the Chesapeake and southern colonies differ from that in New
England? What factors motivated people to settle in the different regions? What effect did the
English Protestant Reformation in the mid–1500s have on the desire of Englishmen to migrate to the
New World? [Hint: the New England colonies.] How did the desire for freedom of worship
(religious freedom) effect colonization and settlement in English America? Which colonies provided
greater religious toleration for their members? Give several examples. [Note: Your answer should

Economic Factors Of The English Colonization Of North America
I believe that we cannot say that only one factor had an impact on English colonization, as both had
a fairly significant influence. In retrospect the fact that Economic factors did have a greater impact
remains true. Merchants that migrated to North America formed Jamestown as the first settlement
and were searching for fortune and a better living then they could have in England. Jamestown was
founded under the Virginia Company, these English joint stock companies were appointed for this
reason – to produce successful settlements. Another reason contributing to the English colonization
of North America were the economic problems and concerns that plagued the English. For this
reason they went to the Americas in search of raw materials such as gold and silver. Even people
that were not merchants, or wealthy businessmen migrated to Americas solely for the bettering of
their and their loved ones lives, by farming or other jobs available at the time. Others ... Show more

King Henry VIII forced the Anglican Church upon English men which some obviously did not want
to obtain. After this both Catholics and Protestants were rejected by their fellow Englishmen, fined,
or even in extreme cases sent to jail. It seemed as if in this moment of time no religion could bond
together the English people. All of these factors accumulated and religious warfare was prospering,
blood was being spilled every day, so a considerable amount of people looked towards the North

I. Attention getter: How many of you are tired of the extinction of species, overcrowded streets, and
low life rates in developing countries? As the United Nations, "an organization which most countries
belong to that is supposed to encourage international peace and co–operation", you want to help the
planet and the people that live on it right? ("Definition of 'United Nations'," n.d.).
II. Reason to Listen: Well, this speech will be influencing you as The United Nations to make a
change in the world by investing in my solution of colonizing other planets which will help decrease
overpopulation.
III. Credibility statement: Researching solutions for overpopulation over the past month has
extended my knowledge on the topic and proven to me that planet colonization is the best solution
out there.
IV. Thesis Statement: The United Nations could save humankind as we know it by understanding,
finding a solution, and knowing who else has worked on the solution to decrease overpopulation.
Body Paragraphs:
I. Before we get to our solution for overpopulation, it is important to understand it.
A. As the United Nations, you most likely know what overpopulation is, but I am here to tell you
what I know about the topic.
1. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, overpopulation is "the condition of having a population
so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash"
("Overpopulation," 2017).
2. Our human population is growing at a rate of approximately 78 million people a year ("Effects of
Human Overpopulation," 2013).
3. Overpopulation is happening because of the better medical facilities which equal more babies and
fewer deaths, and a lack of sexual education ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013).
B. Because of the seven billion people on the planet ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013), we
are forced to go through hardships.
1. Some of these hardships include less freedom, more restrictions, increased climate change,
elevated crime rate, and more ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013).
2. With less freedom, people feel the need to rebel which can cause an elevation in crime rate. The
less freedom we have governments could give rise to a totalitarian

How Did Religion Influence English Colonization

  • 1. How Did Religion Influence English Colonization I think they had a great impact on colonization. Religious had a greater impact than Economics on English colonization. Encouraging factors for America's survival include the effect of the Great Awakening and varied interpretations of this movement. However, factors that held them back were the American colonies continued reliance on England for survival. Religion had a greater impact on English colonization. To understand how America's current balance among national low, local community practice and individual freedom of belief evolved it's helpful to understand some of the common experiences and patterns around religion in colonial culture in the period between 1600 and 1776. In the early years of what later became the United States, Christian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But secularists also should learn from Christians. They should recognize that similar environmental "preconditions" had existed at other times when revival did not occur and that no exact correlation can be established between the outbreak of revival and any set of social conditions. The final evaluation, as in most such historical questions, will depend less upon the evidence of history than upon the convictions of historians. Effects Mercantilism is an economic system that dominated the major European trading nations during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. This "mercantile system" was based on the premise that national wealth and power were best served by increasing exports and collecting precious metals in return. It superseded the medieval feudal organization in Western Europe, especially in the Netherlands, France, and England. Domestically, this led to some of the first instances of significant government intervention and control over the economy, and it was during this period that much of the modern capitalist system was established. Internationally, mercantilism encouraged the many European wars of the period and fueled European ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. How Did English Colonization Affect Canada discovered various features in North America such as: The Great Lakes, Quebec, and New York. The French established settlements in these areas and their impact is very evident on Canada and North America today. Exploration also allowed the French to interact with Native American tribes in those regions in good ways and bad ways. This interaction benefited Native Americans in good ways because it began healthy trade between the French and them. Additionally, French trade gave Native Americans access to guns and other goods that the Native Americans didn't have. This would change the dynamic of war amongst Native Americans forever. On the other hand, French interaction with Native Americans was bad for the native tribes because the French made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... English colonization focused on religion and economy. Ever since the religious revolt against the Catholics, staged by Martin Luther in the 16th century, there were many religions formed which believed they had divine revelation from God. England was a land that was rich with religion and unlike the French and Spanish, they were not Catholic. There were many Protestants who resided in England during colonization. So, according to Early American History to 1877, "to zealous English Protestants, a colony in America would offer a bulwark against Catholic Spain and France." The English wanted to get a religious foothold in America so that all inhabitants in America wouldn't be tainted with Catholic beliefs. In addition, to England, a colony in America offered vast economic trade. Therefore England tried to establish colonies early on with Jamestown and the Roanoke Colony, but neither succeeded. They experienced hunger and hostility from the Indians and eventually had to leave. But, the English were able to rebound. They benefited immensely from tobacco and learned how to survive in the New World. So their objective of taking advantage of the economy of the New World and establishing Protestant colonies was ... • 5. The Origins Of English Colonization Of The New World The origins of American English date back to the beginnings of the seventeenth century and the first successful colonization of the New World. Although the first English explorers led by Walter Raleigh had landed on the coast some three decades before, the attempts to establish a settlement failed due to unexpected conflicts with Native Americans. Jamestown, the first English colony named after James I was established in 1607. It was but one of many settlements that promptly started to fill the coast and adjacent islands. In 1620, a ship called the Mayflower landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Its passengers were Puritans, also known as the 'Pilgrim Fathers', seeking to set up a colony purified (therefore Puritans) from the Church of England ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Effects Of Foreign Literature On A Colonial Population... How are the effects of foreign literature on a colonial population explored by author Lloyd Jones in his novel, Mister Pip? Lloyd Jones's novel, Mister Pip, is set in Bougainville in the 1990's, in the period of time following the abandonment of the Panguna mine by the Australians and the subsequent civil war and blockade. This backdrop provides the perfect environment for Jones to use foreign literature to explore ideas relating to post–colonialism, both on an individual and community level. This exploration provides much food–for–thought for the postcolonial critic, including issues such as cultural hegemony, the struggle for identity when confronted with hybridity, and the role of the literary canon in European colonisation. In The Empire Writes Back (Ashcroft, et al.), the term 'post–colonial' is defined as covering "all the culture affected by the imperial process from the moment of colonization to the present day". Post– colonial theory, then, provides an insight into the complicated power dynamic that occurs between the coloniser and the colonised, and, at its simplest, responds to colonialism with emphasis on the effects, both positive and negative, on the coloniser and the colonised. Having read Jones's Mister Pip with a post–colonial lens, it becomes clear that Mr Watts and Matilda are a metaphor for the coloniser and the colonised. Within this metaphor, they each take on unbalanced roles in different relationships, and are represented in different ways, though Mr ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Main Contours Of English Colonization In The 17th... 1. The main contours of English Colonization in the 17th century were Protestant motives to strike Catholicism, along with solving England's social crisis. With the rumors of the Spanish Empire's atrocities reaching England, one motive to colonize the America's was to strike the Catholics, and save the natives from captivity (Foner 51). This shows an interesting aspect of the English Colonization: the English allowed their people to go colonize just to strike the opposing religious country. Along with this, England sending emigrants over solved their social crisis. Because of England's growing population and economy, the amount of peasants in cities grew. This is because of landlords using land for sheep, which kicked out peasants from their land (Foner 51–52). England hoped that some people of the lower classes would then go to America: to be out of the big cities where important people were, while still helping England in it's economy. 2. Some obstacles the English settlers in the Chesapeake overcame were indentured servitude and getting land from the natives. A majority of the settlers were indentured servants, and for all of the servants, they had to do a certain number of years of labor to be free (Foner 54). This was an obstacle that a lot of settlers had to overcome. It was a tough obstacle, with the labor being really intense, and many indentured servants were dying. Another obstacle that settlers overcame was the need for land, which meant dealing with the Indians. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Differences Between English, Spanish, And Spanish... Colonization was such an important prosses to the world we live in today. Explorer would cross the ocean and overcome many obstacles to try to find new land for their countries. The lands that they did find were distinct in many different ways. The English, French, and the Spanish each had unique settlements and geography. Each one had different governments, and religions. Lastly, each colony had separate and different relations with the Native Americans. Each of these three colonies had very different settlement patterns, and geographies. First most of all the English colonies were created by the royal people of the colony, and were settled in Quebec, Montreal, and Louisiana. Some of the very first trading's began were in Virginia and Massachusetts, but then they all began to spread. On the other hand, in France the first colonies that they began to trade with was in Newfoundland, but then continued with places like parts of Canada, and the Mississippi River. Lastly, Spain has the longest colonization story. Colonization in Spain began in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for India but ended up in Central America, which became a thriving colony of Spain becoming a huge value due to the cash crop of sugar. French had respect for the Native Americans, but mostly because they wanted their alliance. Then the Spanish saw Americans as heathens. They didn't hate each other but didn't necessarily get along. • 13. Compare And Contrast English Colonization And Spanish... From the mid 1500's to the 1700's, people from all over Europe flocked to the vast lands of North America. Spain and England quickly became the most dominant European presences in the Americas. Citizens of the two countries had very different experiences in the New World. This was partially due to their different interactions with Native Americans, religions and their different motivations for coming to the New World. Although rivals at the time, Spain and England's colonization efforts shared many similarities. Motivation for coming to the New World greatly influenced Spanish and British colonization. The Spanish are said to have had three distinct reasons; God, glory and gold. God meaning the conversion of natives, glory meaning the claiming of new land for the Spanish empire and gold meaning the desire to find gold to bring wealth back to Spain. The British colony of Jamestown shared the desire to find gold. Unlike the Spaniards, the British didn't plan on permanently settling in America. However, these plans changed and Jamestown became a settlement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The British relied on the Algonquians to exchange goods for food, and to teach them how to survive on the strange land. The Spaniards took advantage of the Pueblos, forcing them to work on farms and to follow their religion. In the end, both relationships with the Native Americans fell apart. Pueblo Indians became tired of being treated so poorly, and launched attacks on the Spaniards. In contrast, British colonists initiated the aggression towards the Algonquians after the Algonquians withdrew all contact. As you can see, the British had a positive and equal relationship with the natives for the most part. While the Spaniards always had a negative and controlling relationship with the natives. • 15. What Was The Impact Of Religion On English Colonization Religion had a greater impact on English colonization than Economics. When the colonies started to increase, Europe saw a large growth in migration. American survival had included the Great Awakening which proceeded in the mid–eighteenth centuries. The reason religion had greater impact on English colonization in North America is because it has been the pouring unit that had gotten America closer to the point of becoming a country. On the other hand, the economic viewpoint of the American colonies forced them to give an answer back to England. The bond between the colonies and the nation had reformed from the productive trade to the armed battle. Religion help out to form the colonial society. Comparing the ways it did so in the following regions: Chesapeake, New England (Virginia and the South), and Middle Atlantic. There were no churches that existed at the time, so the people went gathering in their homes and prayed together. There had been many different religious groups that all came up to the east seacoast. In New England the people were mainly Puritans who lived very strictly during that period of time. Pennsylvania became the home of the Quakers. They thought that everyone was equal in front of God. • 17. The Art of Persuasion by the Hakluyt Cousins It is quite understandable for a person persuading others of an action, to inflate the outcome of that action in the hopes that they will agree to participate. The Hakluyt cousins had persuasion down to a science and when they released their writings about colonization, they did more than just persuade. The Hakluyt's brothers proclaimed outcomes that to humans in the 21st Century appear to be solely unrealistic wishes. With their statements about the undiscovered riches or the flourishing trade to be established it is not surprising to think that these reasons were not valid, but like Hakluyt the younger intended, the "Inducements" and "Discourse" they wrote were mere justifications and blueprints. The cousins never promised wealth or any other form of riches they merely focused on the commodities they believed would be available. Opponents of the Hakluyt brothers believe they were unjust in their reasons for colonizing because their statements were based on desires, not facts. While it is true that some aims of the Hakluyt's were unrealistic, the cousin's arguments for colonizing were more than valid because the Hakluyt's provided economic arguments that were within England's reach and completely feasible, they inspired religious compromise, and they provided the nation protection through the creation of jobs and a Navy. During the mid–1500's, England was in turmoil and the Hakluyt cousins provided economic hope for the country. There were many arguments that drove the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Spanish colonization of the Americas started in 1492 when Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas and mixed up them for India. Spanish Conquistadors accompanied the objectives of "God, Gold, and Glory" and came looking for gold and wealth. The Spanish additionally accompanied directions to change over the locals to Catholicism. They put resources into transient wanders that while at first extremely productive were not reasonable. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not financed through regal support, the Virginia Colony was at first controlled by a business entity. Like Spain, be that as it may, most early Virginia pioneers were male, youthful bound servants looking for a superior future in a place where there is evident boundless open door. This was not valid in other English provinces, for example, in New England, that offered families as the standard in nearby groups. Different settlements were established by religious gatherings escaping badgering in England or the mainland wars of religion. Explorers, Puritans, Quakers, and Huguenots created groups, regularly in the wake of making bargains with neighborhood Native American people groups. Not at all like the Spanish, there was never a purposeful exertion to change over the local people groups (prominent exemptions may be the preacher exercises of the Moravians among the Shawnee and Cherokee). English pioneers discovered no gold or silver. Rather, they secured productive ventures in the development of tobacco and rice, boat building and lumber, and New England angling. It might be contended that, not at all like the Spanish, these enhanced structures procured more prominent long haul and maintainable benefits for England, at any rate until 1783. Multi Layer Insulation Research Paper When considering the colonization of space, scientists most frequently contemplate how to deal with food, air, and water, the three basic needs of living. These are vital requirements for all living things. On Earth the atmosphere protects you from harmful radiation among other factors. A settlement outside of earth lacks the atmosphere and magnetic field protecting us from the sun. Unlike earth, in space, the radiation and heat from the sun becomes harmful to all life. The radiation destroys the DNA inside cells. Then the heat prevents the body from operating. It will be no easy feat living in space. The temperatures will swing on a lot of factors, for example its axis, orbit, etc. According to NASA.gov and www.livescience.com the temperature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The multi layer shielding will also help insulate thes space station because according to NASA.gov, the outside of the International Space Station ranges from temperatures of 250 deg. F. to –250 deg. F. The multi layer insulation is made of three materials that each play an important role. There is also certain order each layer has to be placed. NASA also uses some of this insulation. The first material, being the farthest from the actual space settlement, is Kapton. Kapton is a great insulation for cold temperatures. It is also a Polyimide film which are known for their high heat resistance. Kapton comes before aluminized Mylar. Kapton is really heavy and it protects the fragile aluminized Mylar. Aluminized Mylar helps with radiation protection and heat protective. The last material is Dacron. Dacron has hydrogen content that absorbs radiation. You then would keep repeating the order and Dacron goes at the end to prevent conduction between layers. The order would be Kapton, Aluminized Mylar, Dacron, Kapton, Aluminized Mylar, Dacron over and over again. This is the way BEARTH™ will protect itself from radiation and will also protect us from more heat coming in. This does not stop the heat inside from leaving, every thing that creates heat in BEARTH™ will be turned into heat. BEARTH™ has ways to remove this heat as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. English Motives for Colonization in North America Essay Why would anyone want to go through the trouble of colonizing? The English had such motives that compelled them to leave their motherland. It was for the reasons of seeking freedom, seeing there was nothing in Britain for them, and success accessed by other nations. England set up strict rules and laws. Those who sought a bit of adventure naturally took off. Others were motivated to find religious freedom. Lord Baltimore set up Maryland for the sake of his fellow Catholics. Since England was primarily Protestant, a great deal of religious persecution occurred consequently the Catholic safe haven was born. Religious persecution also bound the Pilgrims to leave England and settle in Holland, where there was more religious freedom. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She herself was secretly a financial backer to Sir Francis Drake. The defeat of the Spanish Armada was a significant event. Not only did England gain control of the Atlantic sea lanes but it also sparked a sense of patriotism. Spanish expansions in the New World were actions that needed to be limited. In a way, many also attempted to colonize out of spite; to establish England's greatness. In conclusion, England had reasonable motives to emigrate and colonize. Although Raleigh's efforts to found a permanent colony off the coast of Virginia ultimately failed with the mysterious destruction of the Roanoke Island colony in 1587, awakened popular interest in a permanent colonizing venture. The idea of centre is used to depict colonisation where a coloniser becomes a centre to the margin that the colonised are made into. The idea of the centre was not only geographical, but also, political and social. The centre is geographically where the ruler(s) resides. Politically, centre is the entity with which/whom, power rests. Socially, the opinion makers are considered the centre. During colonisation, the coloniser becomes the most power politically. The coloniser is the opinion maker, and, geographically, they rule the colony based out of their homeland. The aim of the centre is to bring into their influence, the occupants of the margin or periphery. . I have chosen a visual text(movie) called, "Equilibrium" to better understand and explain the concept of the centre–margin relationship. The movie is a science–fiction and is set in the future after the third world war. Spanish Conquest Vs English Colonization Essay Azeezat Adekanmbi Professor Denise Hulett History 1301 13 February 2015 The New World: English Colonization Vs Spanish Conquest The history of colonial North America centers primarily on the struggle of England, France, and Spain to gain control of the continent. This settler took different effort. These differences has positively and negatively affected the New World's. Spain, for instance, were governed by autocratic sovereigns whose rule was absolute; Spain colonists went to America as slaves of the Crown. The English colonists, on the other hand, enjoyed far more freedom and were able to manage themselves as long as they followed English law and were loyal to the king (Granburyisd). Instead of revenue from America returning to the state, it went to the investors and stockholders of the private companies. • 31. Comparing The Spanish And The Colish And English... Although the Spanish and the British began colonizing the New World at relatively the same time their colonization efforts were extremely different. Although they had many differences they often used similar tactics in order to reach their goals. The differences include the two nations different reasoning to explore the New World, their relationship with the Natives, and the types of governments that they attempted to set up. Although some of these differences might not seem as if they are very important, they helped one nation do you better than the other one when it came to colonization efforts. First, the Spanish and English reasoning behind exploration and settlement of the New World was extremely different. This also means that the type of people that came from both nations to settle the New World were also very different. The Spanish wanted to explore the New World for what people like to call "Glory, God, and Gold". Glory means that they wanted the fame and credit for being the first nation to find the New World and settle it. God is a Synecdoche for religious duties. Gold is the easiest term to understand because it means that they wanted riches such as gold. Because of the fact that these were the main three things that Spain wanted to get out of the New World, they only sent over people that would help them achieve these three things. This means that they mostly sent over soldiers and missionaries. The soldiers would use brute force on the natives if they did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because of this, colonists need a way to ensure that they have a sustainable and sufficient source of food, so they remain properly nourished and do not starve to death. This is the exact problem seen in the popular film, and the novel it was based on, The Martian. It is believed that the Native American forefathers reached this country via a piece of land that linked Asia to North America. Upon arrival, the Paleo–Indians split into numerous tribes. They broke off into a number of tribes, including but not limited to, the Paiutes, the Shoshonis, the Algonquians, the Aztecs, and the Mayans. The Paiutes and the Shoshonis tended to migrate seasonally. They are both tribes that settled in Nevada and Utah. The Algonquian tribe inhabited present–day northeastern United States and eastern Canada. They preferred to remain in their territories, they rarely migrated. The Aztecs, a bellicose nation, colonized what is now Mexico and Guatemala. The Aztecs had gained power over central Mexico before the Spanish accessed the new world. The Mayans also settled in Mexico and Guatemala. They were a very intelligent nation that already had writing and mathematics systems in place by the time the Spanish arrived. • 39. Pros And Cons For English Colonization Terifay 1 Sarah Terifay Mr. Wade United States History September 16, 2017 Motivations for English Colonization Greed was one of the leading causes to the English exploration of the Americas. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Spain took the lead in exploring and setting up colonies much in North America which in turn caused the English to become wary of a possible new powerhouse and threat. Along with a fear of threat was also a want to inhabit the new land and thus gain trading partners, find treasure, and expand before Spain had a chance to flood more of the vast new land. Elizabeth rapidly set out to build a colony, first giving a charter to Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Sir Walter Raleigh, no such English colony would exist until James I came to rule (Shi and Tindall 48–49). Eventually, Religious tension, a want for gold, and a desire for new goods led the English to expand and configure colonies in the New World. After Elizabeth's death, the Church of England went into a time of crisis. Many people found the rituals, bishops, and elaborate costumes and jewels to be unnecessary to religion. Along with this, many people started to view bishops of the church as dictatorial leaders who should have no part in government. The Puritans were one of the first groups to question the showy form of church which would eventually lead them to the new world due to being banished by the king for not following the basic principles. In adhering to such perspectives, one fails to consider the significant role of women, family units, Native Americans, and imperial politics in colonization. Although males had their own significant role, the development of the early English colonies involved a complex interplay of many different historical actors. John Rolfe indicates that tobacco production was so prevalent that many colonists were failing to till their corn, a food source. Differing from the original colonial vision, tobacco would affect colonial opportunities and philosophies regarding blacks, poverty, and labor. Critical to this production of tobacco was a significant labor source. This demand was met by the increased introduction of indentured servitude. Although many people feel that 200,000 years is a fairly long time for us to have existed as a species, it is quite the opposite. The earth is estimated to have been made 4.54 billion years ago. Life as we know it is estimated to have begun 4 billion years ago. When comparing the existence of the human race to the existence of the planet we live on or the existence of all forms of life, it becomes very apparent that the humans species time on this planet has been relatively miniscule. If you took the entire history of the 13.7 billion year old universe and compressed it into one year, the first humans would not even show up until 10:30 pm on December 31st. Without having a good understanding of how short our stay on this planet has been, it's very hard for people to imagine a future where humans are no longer an existing species. With how short of a time span we have existed here, and how many species have come and gone in the history of earth, it is not too irrational to fear the possibility of human extinction. Clearly this isn't a threat that is anywhere near imminent, but that is no reason to give it any less thought. A huge flaw of the human race is that we often tend to be short–sighted. Thirteen years later, 102 settlers aboard the Mayflower landed in Massachusetts at a place they named Plymouth. With these two colonies, English settlement in North America was born. Jamestown offered anchorage and a good defensive position. Warm climate and fertile soil allowed large plantations to prosper. Plymouth provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. Cold climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and trade. Economic motives prompted colonization in Virginia. The colonies which were formed after the English Civil War were much more diverse in their makeup than were the initial Puritan colonies. These colonies formed over a longer period of time and their populations were composed of people who had left England for a varying degree of reasons. In addition, rather than being composed of immigrants from one primary area in England, the English colonists were more geographically diverse as well. Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Space Inwards A space elevator is a tower rising from earth into orbit with a counterweight, a deployment booster that will unfurl two thin strips of ribbon stretching two earths for orbit (Lemley 97), at the end of it. The idea for space elevators is quite old dating back to the writing of The Bible. It was first stated in the book of Genesis it was called the Tower of Babel, which met to reach the heavens. For the past three decades, space elevators were fiction that was hinting at a new age of exploration and innovations. However, today many science facilities consider the technology as infeasible and expensive. The space elevator will probably not work because the disadvantages would out weight the advantage of it. If space elevators were to be built it would lead into a new era for human– beings. But will the earth's limitation cause the construction to fail? Finding a place to put the elevator and finding material strong enough to support the elevator are two disadvantage that would cause the elevator to fail. Each of great European Colonies share some similarities with one another but all varied greatly in structure, dominance, and influence. The Spanish, French, and English all established rather successful colonies in the Americas but the locations of these colonies varied by founding country. The Spanish crown–sponsored conquests gained riches for Spain and helped expand its empire. Originally claiming the Bahamas and most of South America the Spanish Empire eventually claimed most of the southern and southwestern regions of the North America, as well as sections of the California coast. The French were likely as ambitious but found it difficult to compare to the vast dominance of the Spanish in the Americas. Their first colonies were trading posts in Newfoundland and eastern Canada. But French posts were established in the St. Lawrence valley, part of Canada, and the Mississippi River area. Their empire eventually reigned from very northeast Canada all the way south to Louisiana. For the English most colonies were established by royal charter. Spain sent conquistadores to assert their dominance in the New World through violent conquest which resulted in difficult relations with native populations. Because the Spanish Crown had little interest in creating long–lasting colonies in New World for any purpose other than to gain wealth for the mother country, the group of Spaniards that came to America only consisted of conquistadores, missionaries, and soldiers. It is important to note that no Spanish women made the journey to the Americas, which contributed to Spain's issue with founding substantial settlements. All of these factors made it difficult for Spain to benefit off colonization because the country lacked a strong, stable economy in the New World. On the other hand, England was able to establish permanent settlements in the Americas more efficiently than the Spanish because the purpose of colonization was not solely to acquire wealth, but also to flee religious and political persecution. Since British colonists had a comparatively more compelling reason to inhabit the Americas than the Spanish, they were more likely to permanently settle and contribute to the economy through commerce and agriculture. Fogg's first premise is that humans are just as natural as any other natural object: "Human consciousness, culture, creativity and the technological artefacts produced thereby are thus not unnatural. They have arisen from the same physics that gave birth to the cosmos and the same process of biological evolution" (Fogg 210). Rocks are free to rust and crumble over the aeons, asteroids and meteorites free to batter the Martian surface [...]" (210). Fogg's article serves two purposes in the discussion of space colonization. One, it makes it clear that there are certain ethical theories, like preservationism, that could in fact provide an argument against space development if supported. Second, the article offers a convincing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. The Spanish, French, and English Colonization. The Spanish, French, and English Colonization Have you ever wondered where why the many different countries in Europe came to America to explore and colonize? There were two main concepts that drew the Europeans to America: the excitement and profit of the "New World", and the past histories of their countries. The English, French, and Spanish each came to the Americas in search of a new beginning; a fresh start in which they could escape past torment and capture new wealth. However, each motive defined the character of each settlement. With the inventions of more efficient ships and the perfection of navigational instruments, the Spanish (as well as England and France) gained a curiosity to explore and find a way to Asia by water and ... You shall judge of the good air by the people; for some part of that coast where the lands are low, have their people blear eyed and with swollen bellies and legs; but if the naturals he strong and clean make, it is a true sign of a wholesome soil."# This displays a very important objective of the English colonists that they wanted to be successful; possibly even an imitation of Spain and their achievements. These statements suggest that the English didn't come to the Americas simply to plunder gold and riches from the native Indians. As stated in A People and a Nation, "Unlike the Spanish, other European nations did not immediately start to colonize the coasts their sailors had explored. They were interested in exploiting the natural wealth of the region, not in conquering territories."# However, the English did, at times, exploit the Indians for their profit. Actually, they came to America for a number of reasons, but mainly to escape religious persecution and seek a new start in the world. People whom were mere peasants in England, and possessed no land, would soon become owners of many acres of their very own property. In England, trades grew poor due to the inability to trade with Spain due to religious separation. During the early 16th century, King Henry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The Role Of English Colonization In The New World The first colonization of the English was not in the New World but rather in Ireland. However, they have come in contact with the New World when King Henry VII sponsored John Cabot to sail to the northeastern coast of North America in 1497, only five years after Spain's. Unlike Spain, English's main interest in colonization was land instead of gold or silver. In addition, many people developed an interest of colonization as a response to social, economic, and religious problems in the sixteenth–century. Much of the English colonization and settlement was rather difficult due to the unusual and new conditions of the land. However, with the help of the natives of the New World, many people survived such conditions regardless of their scarce resources. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The London group received the south and the Plymouth Merchants received the North. Since the carter, the London Company began their expedition to Virginia with 144 men aboard three ships, the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. Of the 144 men aboard, only 104 survived the journey and reached the American coast in the spring of 1607. Once they sailed into the Chesapeake and into the river they called James, they established a colony on the peninsula of the river and called it Jamestown. The choice of their settlement was a mistake of their own. Their choice of an inland setting would not only provide security from the natives, but it would also make it difficult for survival, due to its swampy conditions surrounded by thick woods. Many of the colonists were not immune to the local diseases, such as malaria, which made it even more difficult for the colonists to adapt to the environment. They focused on growing food and building communities rather than searching for goods, such as gold. With Jamestown on the verge of collapsing, the settlers had no choice but to turn to the natives for help. The English quickly learned to hunt, fish, grow food, and build canoes. In addition to their survival, Captain John Smith also played a role in Jamestown's survival. John Smith was known for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Difference Between Spanish And English Colonization During the 15th through 17th centuries, advancements in technology and the desire for new resources spurred the exploration of the New World for both Spain and England. Spain's interest in exploration soon surpassed the rest of the countries in the Old World and the nation began to claim the majority of territory in Central and South America. Spain sent conquistadores to assert their dominance in the New World through violent conquest which resulted in difficult relations with native populations. Although the English did not settle in North America until the early 17th century, well past the period of the Spanish conquest, their methods of colonization were more successful in the long term. The English were able to find economic success ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This caused a trade imbalance, thus hurting the Spanish economy and making it harder for the colonies in the New World to become successful settlements. Their economic situation differed from the Spanish because instead of earning wealth through conquest and exploitation, industry in English colonies was based on farming, fishing, and exports like tobacco and lumber. The economy was also more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their land control and their motivation in establishing a colony in the Americas consisted of different many reasons. In addition, their settlements and their relationships with the Indians also had many great effects on how they maintained their establishments in the Americas. Although Spain had already claimed most of the Americas, the English, French establishments and the defeat of the Spanish armada diminished Spain's opportunity to become one of the most powerful countries in the world. Around the time when most establishments were made in the Americas, French had taken control of the Inland North America and St. Lawrence River. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Disadvantages Of Space Colonization Space colonization (also called space settlement, or extraterrestrial colonization) is permanent human habitation off planet Earth. Many arguments have been made for space colonizationThe two most common are survival of human civilization and the biosphere in case of a planetary–scale disaster (natural or man–made), and the vast resources in space for expansion of human society. No space colonies have been built so far. Currently, the building of a space colony would present a set of huge challenges both technological and economic. Space settlements would have to provide for nearly all (or all) the material needs of hundreds or thousands of humans, in an environment out in space that is very hostile to human life. They would involve technologies, such as controlled ecological life support systems, that have yet to be developed in any meaningful way. They would also have to deal with the as yet unknown issue of how humans would behave and thrive in such places long–term. Because of the present cost of sending anything from the surface of the Earth into orbit (around $2,500 per pound to orbit, expected to further decrease)[2] a space colony would currently be a massively expensive project. There are no plans for building one by any large–scale organization, either government or private. However, there have been many proposals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Halle, formerly of the United States Department of State, wrote in Foreign Affairs (Summer 1980) that the colonization of space will protect humanity in the event of global nuclear warfare.[9] The physicist Paul Davies also supports the view that if a planetary catastrophe threatens the survival of the human species on Earth, a self–sufficient colony could "reverse–colonize" Earth and restore human civilization. The author and journalist William E. Burrows and the biochemist Robert Shapiro proposed a private project, the Alliance to Rescue Civilization, with the goal of establishing an off–Earth "backup" of human ... • 75. Economic Factors Of The English Colonization Of North America I believe that we cannot say that only one factor had an impact on English colonization, as both had a fairly significant influence. In retrospect the fact that Economic factors did have a greater impact remains true. Merchants that migrated to North America formed Jamestown as the first settlement and were searching for fortune and a better living then they could have in England. Jamestown was founded under the Virginia Company, these English joint stock companies were appointed for this reason – to produce successful settlements. Another reason contributing to the English colonization of North America were the economic problems and concerns that plagued the English. For this reason they went to the Americas in search of raw materials such as gold and silver. Even people that were not merchants, or wealthy businessmen migrated to Americas solely for the bettering of their and their loved ones lives, by farming or other jobs available at the time. Many people converted to Protestantism as Catholicism was become much too controlling of people and individuals did not have as much freedom as they rightfully should have had. To add to this – King Henry VIII forced the Anglican Church upon English men which some obviously did not want to obtain. After this both Catholics and Protestants were rejected by their fellow Englishmen, fined, or even in extreme cases sent to jail. It seemed as if in this moment of time no religion could bond together the English people. All of these factors accumulated and religious warfare was prospering, blood was being spilled every day, so a considerable amount of people looked towards the North American colonies (to migrate there.) As the United Nations, "an organization which most countries belong to that is supposed to encourage international peace and co–operation", you want to help the planet and the people that live on it right? ("Definition of 'United Nations'," n.d.). II. Reason to Listen: Well, this speech will be influencing you as The United Nations to make a change in the world by investing in my solution of colonizing other planets which will help decrease overpopulation. III. Credibility statement: Researching solutions for overpopulation over the past month has extended my knowledge on the topic and proven to me that planet colonization is the best solution out there. IV. Thesis Statement: The United Nations could save humankind as we know it by understanding, finding a solution, and knowing who else has worked on the solution to decrease overpopulation. Body Paragraphs: I. Before we get to our solution for overpopulation, it is important to understand it. A. As the United Nations, you most likely know what overpopulation is, but I am here to tell you what I know about the topic. 1. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, overpopulation is "the condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash" ("Overpopulation," 2017). 2. Our human population is growing at a rate of approximately 78 million people a year ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013). 3. Overpopulation is happening because of the better medical facilities which equal more babies and fewer deaths, and a lack of sexual education ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013). B. Because of the seven billion people on the planet ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013), we are forced to go through hardships. 1. Some of these hardships include less freedom, more restrictions, increased climate change, elevated crime rate, and more ("Effects of Human Overpopulation," 2013). 2. With less freedom, people feel the need to rebel which can cause an elevation in crime rate. The less freedom we have governments could give rise to a totalitarian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
