The Success Of The Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln was a great influence not only to this country, but also to other political leaders.
He showed a great example of how just a few words can change so much about the U.S and how the
people of the U.S live. He had many successes in his presidential years; one of his great successes
was the emancipation proclamation, this document effected how the people of the U.S treated
African Americans as well as give them right to own land and vote. He also wrote and delivered the
Gettysburg Address, this speech gave people much to think about. The Gettysburg Address also gave
many ideas that they soon put into perspective.
The speech, Gettysburg Address, was written in Gettysburg Pennsylvania after the Gettysburg battle.
According to Civil War Can Trust, this battle was between the union led by George G. Meade and
the confederates led by Robert E. Lee. The union had 93,921 men and the confederates had 71,699;
from those there were 51,112 casualties from both sides of the battle field. It was after the war that
president Lincoln went to Pennsylvania to deliver his, now famous, speech the Gettysburg Address
along with other political leaders.
The Gettysburg Address was written by the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. This speech was
written for the public, the speech explains how all men should be equal and how those who serve
our country should not be held as slaves. Abraham Lincoln, the writer of the Gettysburg Address,

Rhetorical Devices Used In The Gettysburg Address
Sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, in his speech, the Gettysburg Address,
delivered after the battle of Gettysburg speaks solemnly of the soldiers who perished in the strife.
Not just of the of the North, but the South as well. Lincoln's purpose is to reflect upon the battle and
demonstrate amongst the American public that it is their civil duty to not let these soldiers die in
vain. More specifically, he stresses the issue for the nation to still stand and "not perish from the
earth." Lincoln adopts a sentimentally passionate tone in order to emphasize the gravity of the
situation from the fifty–thousand who died in the battle. President Lincoln, in his address, utilizes
the syntactic use of parallelism and further elaborates his purpose through use of appeals to
authority. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, he immediately counters this imagery by emphasizing how the U.S citizens cannot mourn
and commemorate the dead but het must finish what they began. Lincoln does this by employing the
syntactical use of parallelism. Lincoln further demonstrates that even though there was much blood
splattered we can not just mourn for them–– "we cannot dedicate –– we cannot consecrate –– we
cannot hallow–– this ground." Through the use of parallelism and the repiton of the phrase "we can
not," Lincoln is immediately enabled to speak on the same grounds as his audience–as a
collaborative effort. Although, more importantly, by establishing more credibility through the
repetition of the phrase "we cannot" the audience will essentially believe and follow what Lincoln is
declaring since the phrase is almost as if Lincoln is ordering his audience. In this case he is ordering
the audience not to let these soldiers die in vain. He is also commanding his audience to stay strong,
because if the people are then the nation is

slavery, honoring the dead, dedication to the cause, and new birth of freedom. (LaFantasie 74) The
conflict regarding the continuance of slavery, was the major cause of the Civil War. Lincoln stated
the fact that we were in a "great civil war, testing whether this nation can endure". One of the
bloodiest battles of the Civil War occurred at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where approximately 8,000
Confederate and Union soldiers lost their lives. The nation was divided between the North and the
South, this division had the potential to tear the nation apart. Fathers, sons, brothers, neighbors were

President Abraham Lincoln gave a speech on the grounds where thousands of people died after the
Gettysburg Address; the controversy lies whether the Gettysburg Address was significant or not.
There are two sides to every story in this case there are the ones who believe the address was
important and then there are ones who thought the address had no significance. The Gettysburg
Address was full of logic and professionalism. This being the case some might argue against
Lincoln saying the speech was more like good poetry, rather than a speech to the country. Were the
Presidents words to professionally toned? Adams, the man opposing the speech, later notes there
were mistakes and falsehoods in the words Lincoln used in his speech, consequently,

world was like at the time, we figure out that the nation was not where it needed to be and that it
would now be up to us to keep the people alive. He gives such a great meaning to why we need to

The Legacy Of The Gettysburg Address
Many years ago, America was not the country that is today, it had to fight for territory and freedom.
Although it 's become a country ruled by the people. People had to elect a president that fulfilled the
expectations to expand and to create a successful country. Each of the chosen presidents left a mark;
some achieved many good things and others failed. One of the big events that contribute to the way
America is designed today was the civil war of 1861.During this war president, Abraham Lincoln
was in charge. This war lasted four bloody years, many people died and as a response in 1862,
Lincoln gave a motivational speech to his people, to not give up and fight for their freedom. The

The civil war was portrayed as the test of America, to see if it deserved to be a country of freedom.
It is important to note, however, that Lincoln also uses Aristotelian Rhetoric as a tool to back up his
proposal argument by showing that it was an opportunity to demonstrate America was the strongest
country. He uses ethos, which is the ethical appeal. In order to show credibility to his audience as he
said that he is conscious about the many deaths, but for that reason, It 's about time to prove that this
will be a lesson learned. In a way, he shows pity for those that die so he as the leader says that he
cannot tolerate more deaths and action will be taken. Lincoln uses fancy language and history facts
to demand and convince people. If people work as one the unity will be reflected on how war is
fought and to the life people will be having. Lincoln speech has become to know as one of the most
famous speeches, because it did not only Lincoln was giving its plight and motivating the soldiers
who were left to continue fighting and put an end to this war, but also began to discuss the issue of
slavery and how this was needed to be won to continue creating a nation of equality and freedom. In
other words, he begins to discuss the end of slavery. This shows that Lincoln does not only wants to

The Gettysburg Address Thesis
Lincoln, "Gettysburg Address" Analysis The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by Abraham
Lincoln at a cemetery for Union soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil
War. While this address may not seem controversial today, it was completely radical in 1863. When
Lincoln began his speech, he first referenced the Founding Fathers and what they had planned for
the new nation. We can easily connect this speech to previous readings, because Lincoln drew words
from the Declaration of Independence as he said that the new nation was supposedly based on the
idea that "all men are created equal." Lincoln was essentially saying that the Founding Fathers were
merely the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and not the signers of the Constitution. This
speech was a message to the Confederates who consistently pointed out that the Constitution did not
prohibit slavery. Lincoln implied that the Founding Fathers expressed what they really wanted for
the United States in the Declaration of Independence. My questions for the class are, "Do you
believe that the Founding Fathers actually meant that all men are created equal?" and, "Do you

Informative Essay On The Gettysburg Address
"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived
in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal (The Gettysburg
Address)." Some might know those words as the beginning paragraph of one of the greatest
speeches ever written. The speech was presented by Abraham Lincoln on November 19,1863 in
front of a crowd of 15,000 (Santamaria–Wheeler). He gave this speech at the dedication for a
military cemetery at Gettysburg in Pe¬nnsylvania (Lincoln). A couple of months before the speech
was given, this place was a war zone. It was the same place where the Battle of Gettysburg
happened. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the Union and the Confederate soldiers, the
North against the South. This battle was fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863 and nearly 46,000 men
lost their lives on those tragic days (Rush, 2018). Lincoln wanted to give this speech to bring the

One thing to remember about this speech is that Lincoln said that "all men are created equal." Even
if we are different races, different genders, we are all humans and we are all equal. He wanted this
phrase to encourage the people to abolish slavery for good. Another important thing to remember
about this speech is the amount of thought and dedication that Lincoln put into writing it. Even
though it took Lincoln only a couple of minutes to speak, it took him a lot longer than a couple of
minutes to write it. He saw how the world was before the war and he saw how it was after the war.
He knew that this country could be better and he wanted to make a difference and make people
think. That is exactly why this speech was so important in our world not only in 1863 but also today.

Ethos In The Gettysburg Address
After reading the Gettysburg address, it showed the civil war depicted a deep shatter during the
eighteenth century in the American society because it was said to be the bloodiest battle of the
American civil war. This was a war within the nation of America but not from another country. The
war was about dividing the union of the North and Confederacy of the south because they both had
different beliefs. The war which was fought on July 1863 was a unified victory which stopped
General Robert E Lee from invading the North the second time. It was a three day battle which
involved so many casualties. As a result of this war, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in order to
dedicate Gettysburg National Cemetery to use to honor the soldiers who had fallen as a result of this
war. His speech at the cemetery is what we now know as the Gettysburg address. This speech has
just ten sentences and 272 words but Lincoln was able to use this speech to make a lasting impact
that would not just be for the audience at Gettysburg, but will also be remembered throughout
history. The speech conveyed was about the war and the beginning of the human rights and reasons
why soldiers gave their lives. He reassured the benefits that the founding fathers had made during
the declaration of independence and the constitution. Abraham Lincoln presumed that the war would
end when there is a union victory but he also wants the people to know that if the country merges

The Gettysburg Address is one of the most recognizable documents in the history of the United
States. It was delivered by Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863 at the dedication of the
Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. This cemetery marks the final resting place for
thousands of soldiers who were killed during the Civil War. At this time, the experiment in
democracy, the United State of America, was 100 years old and had not dealt with a crisis such as
this. The very existence of the country was at stake. At the time this speech was given, the Union
Army, representing the North, and the Confederate Army, representing the south, were in the middle

The final speech was created as a result of reflecting on experiences and events that began when
Lincoln was first invited to give the speech and ended when he stepped to the platform in
Gettysburg (Johnson 55). The words and context began in Washington but developed over the trip to
Gettysburg in as many as five different versions. .Lincoln requested and was given information
about the national cemetery prior to departing from Washington so that he could speak with
confidence about the battlefield. Lincoln was known for composing his speeches thoughtfully and
was known as a slow writer who liked to tighten phrases and logic (Wills 28). On the morning of the
Gettysburg address, Lincoln toured the battlefield and visited the grave of a friend, General
Reynolds. Martin Johnson, in "Writing the Gettysburg Address", says that the speech was created by
a series of events in history based on Lincoln's experiences (Johnson 4). One such experience that
influenced Lincoln was the death of his son in 1862. His grief over the loss of his son impacted the
speech in that he showed emotion about the young men who had died on the battlefield. Lincoln, in
dealing with death and the natural setting of human burial, does not mourn a single soldier but talks
about the birth of a nation's life and its new birth of freedom (Wills 77). The excerpt, "The brave

of Independence. In the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson describes the phrase that all men are created
equal. In fact, the first line in the Gettysburg address is an allusion to the Founding Fathers and the
Declaration of Independence. By doing this, Lincoln was describing how the United States was
founded. However, in that current moment, the phrase of "all men are created equal" had been
forgotten.
Another parallel in the Declaration of Independence would be when Jefferson speaks about war. He
writes "as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war" (Jefferson). During the
Gettysburg Address, Lincoln is standing on a battle ground where states from the same country had
endured in battle. Lincoln also describes how he does not know how much more this nation can take
(Lincoln). His statement is relevant to the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of
Independence was written because of the harsh treatment the King of Britain was forcing upon the
colonies. With that being said, the colonies could not endure anymore suffering and decided ... Show

After the attacks that killed thousands of people, President George W. Bush went to ground zero and
spoke. When President Bush spoke, he sounded like Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address. As he was
standing on the rubble he commended the people that lost their lives at that place. He also promised
that the people who committed this horrific crime would hear the United States calling for them.
Much like Lincoln, President Bush recognized the lost loved ones and honored the dead by stating

Poor Unfortunate Souls
Blood, sweat, and tears will always be shed. Maybe you will find bone or even an actual bloody
body part on the very land of Gettysburg if you went back in time to the very moment of the war.
July 1 to July 3, 1863, will forever go down as the bloodiest moments during the Civil War. The
Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point during the American Civil War. The American Civil War
started because of the differences between the free and enslaved state. They fought over the power
of the national governments to forbid slavery in the territories that have yet to become states. The
South is also known as the Confederate were at war with the North also known as the Union. After
the war Abraham Lincoln gave his famous speech, The Gettysburg Address. In his speech he
mentioned that the dead who fought shall not die in vain. His speech also addresses the concept of
equality and the struggle with equality.

friend Private Buster Kilrain and General John Hood all had some unlucky things happen to them.

professorship at Bowdoin College to come to war. He is the colonel of the Twentieth Maine Infantry

Gettysburg Address Failure
Today, the Gettysburg Address is praised for being one of the most renowned speeches in U.S.
history, but despite its fame, it was not always viewed as being a complete success. It is important to
realize that the views from the 1860's were very contrasting to those of today, including how people
viewed Lincoln and his speech. One newspaper article from the time period puts this into
perspective. The Harrisburg Patriot & Union Newspaper company wrote an article Tuesday,
November 24th of 1863 recognizing "the silly remarks of the President" (Pengelly). It also goes on
to note that, "... for the credit of the nation we are willing that the veil of oblivion shall be dropped
over them and that they shall be no more repeated or thought of" (Pengelly). In general, the article
basically mocks the president, specifically noting how short and pathetic his speech was.
Furthermore, many others at the time had felt the same way about the speech, suggesting that
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was nothing but a failure.
However, this viewpoint evolves over time. A prime example of ... Show more content on

Lincoln's stance on equality is best explained by Gary Wills, who summarizes Lincoln's view by
saying, "If all men are created equal, they cannot be property. They cannot be ruled by owner–
monarchs. They must be self governing in the minimal sense of self–possession" (Wills 120).
Lincoln not only wanted citizenship for the slaves, but also equality in across the board. Whereas for
the South, the equality of all men would bring their biggest nightmare to life; African Americans
being considered equal to themselves. Furthermore, they didn't want to see those who they viewed
as lower than themselves to rise above them, and granting the freedmen citizenship would only

fallen soldiers. The Gettysburg Address President Lincolns speech was so important at the time
because he wanted to make clear that the Declaration of Independence was what the founding
fathers affirmed when it was "dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" (Lincoln,
1863, para.1). There were slave owners, at the time, which indicated that the Constitution did
condone slavery, therefore allowing the act. President Lincoln's speech made it clear that this was
not the case. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lincoln stated "Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation
so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure" (Lincoln, 1863, para.2). President Lincoln proceeds
his speech with the notion that it was not appropriate for one to dedicate a memorial site, as the
fallen soldiers who fought have already dedicated the area with their lives. Lincoln states "we
cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow, this ground. The brave men, living and
dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our power to add or detract (Lincoln, 1863,
para.3). The ground was already sacred in his eyes, it was up to the nation now to continue the

Gettysburg Address at the Gettysburg National Cemetery. "Gettysburg, Pennsylvania , was the site

Abraham Lincoln was elected president in november of 1860, making him the 16th president of the
United States of America. His Gettysburg Address was one of his most elegant speeches and has
gone down as one of the most referenced speeches of all time.
The battle of Gettysburg was an intense fight between the union and the confederacy, and lasted
three days. Many consider the battle as being one of the most important battles of the American
Civil War. Forty–three thousand soldiers died, and the Gettysburg National Cemetery was the final
resting place for over three thousand five hundred union soldiers. "Lincoln's words were received by
a tired crowd without much enthusiasm"(UXL Encyclopedia of U.S. History p631.). The speech was
well received. Lincoln's eloquent way of speaking showed his intelligence and education. The
speech is easy to understand so that anyone could be inspired by Lincoln's words.

The Impact of the Gettysburg Address on the United States
The speech we now know as the Gettysburg Address was given to consecrate the fallen soldiers in
the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It is known as one of the most influential speeches ever and has
been recognized in hindsight as pivotal in the outcome of the war. Its brevity and poetry emphasized
America's original dream, the importance of equality, and the opportunity for a new birth of
freedom, a message which continues to be of relevance today.
The Gettysburg Address was powerful because each word was thought out and was meaningful to
Lincoln. It was on November 19, 1863, when Lincoln delivered the speech after the battle of
Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg was the most demoralizing battle of the Civil war between the
Union and the Confederacy, with over 50,000 casualties in just three days. Lincoln spoke at the
ceremonies honoring the brave Union soldiers after Edward Everett, a famous orator who spoke for
two hours. In contrast Lincoln captivated his crowd for just over two minutes with a mere 272
words. He was concise and to the point while also poetic. Everett is known to have sent Lincoln a
letter after the ceremony that said; "I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to
the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes." Lincoln repeated words
that he wanted to emphasize; we, dedicated, and nation. He stressed these words to make his
message clearer.

to continue the legacy of those who died in the battle. In his speech, President Lincoln utilizes
pathos when speaking of the demise of all those soldiers and people, in order to induce our
emotions. Reminding us of those ideals on which our country was founded, that all men are created
equal despite the color of their skin. He demonstrates the use of logos when he mentions that all it
would be a waste of lives and resources if they dismiss the main reason for their sacrifice. They gave
their lives in order to provide our freedom, and that should never be taken for granted. He repeats
this subject in the following sentences, speaking of the consecration of, the hallowing of the ground
on which the soldiers fought. Lincoln uplifts the efforts made by the soldiers above anything that
might be said by those who did not participate in the battle, even though also including those who
survived: "the brave men, living and dead." (Lincoln 1). The address has Biblical references as well,

Gettysburg Address Thesis
The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863. Lincoln
states, "We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting–place for those who here
gave their lives that that nation might live. (Lincoln)" This speech was for the dedication of the
Soldier's National Cemetery, a cemetery dedicated to Union soldiers who died in the Battle of
Gettysburg. In this speech, Lincoln gives the people a sense of strength and unity in the fact that the
United States is privileged to have been, and still continues to be, founded on equality. "The world
will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.
(Lincoln)" Many will never be able to know exactly all that happened in the duration of the Civil
War, but they will be able to stand proud in the freedom that was fought for them during it.
Lincoln proposes the idea that these men were not lost in vain, but instead that the United States has
been given another chance to ensure the liberty, freedom, and basic rights to her citizens. "... These
dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and

The North, although won, lost many men – all having family of some sort. The remembrance of
those lost, as well as still alive, was important to them. In addition, they did not want to allow their
deaths to be in vain, and they wanted to avenge them as well as the true values America was
founded upon. Society was broken and torn, and in one of the most desperate times, Lincoln took it
upon himself to give hope to the nation. Not only this, but he reminds them what they were fighting
for, and that they must not stop, even if the war is over. The war was more than on the battlefield,

The Impact Of The Gettysburg Address
When people think about President Lincoln, what comes to mind? Probably the Civil War, slavery,
his assassination, and the Gettysburg Address, right? Well the Gettysburg Address is a historical
artifact that has a huge impact on how American culture and society are today. The Gettysburg
Address contributed to the Civil Rights Movement and helped Lincoln put new amendments in
effect. Over the years since the speech was given, The United States has changed dramatically.
Today the Gettysburg Address is kept at the National Museum of American History in Washington
D.C. The paper has turned yellow from age, the writing is elegant, and the ink is still pitch black.
The cursive writing gives it an antique look as well as the paper the Gettysburg Address is written
on and the wrinkles around the edges of the document shows the old age. The Gettysburg Address
came from the Civil War era, which was from 1861–1865.
The Gettysburg Address was created by President Lincoln and is one of the most important speeches
in American history. According to Barr, (2015) the Gettysburg Address was a remarkable endeavor
for Lincoln and the president utilized it to his political advantage. Before he arrived at the
Gettysburg cemetery to deliver it to the American people, Lincoln composed five different drafts of
the Gettysburg Address.(Dirck, 2015) The Gettysburg Address came from a time of uncertainty, war,
and change in U.S. history. It was just a time Americans were confused non the less. The old

The Gettysburg Address Analysis
The American Civil War consisted of much loss and a significantly divided nation; however, it also
served as an opportunity for President Lincoln to remind the people of their nation's foundation of
equality and unity. He gave this reminder through the "Gettysburg Address," which even today
remains a strong example of the values that the forefathers of the United States founded the nation
on. The context of this speech was during a time of bloodshed and hatred, which portrays how it was
a turning point in the history of the United States. The civil war is perhaps one of the most defining
events in the United States' history, as it was a test for how the nation would be perceived.
Fortunately, in just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly, reminded the disillusioned public
why the Union had to fight and win the Civil War, and about a much bigger picture that was of
concern: freedom and equality.
The American Civil war began due to uncompromising differences between the free and slave states
and the government's ability to prohibit slavery in territories that were not yet deemed as states. At
this time, Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election as the first Republican president whose platform
revolved around keeping slavery out of the territories. As a result, seven slave states seceded despite
Lincoln and his administration not believing in succession as legitimate. The states that seceded
were in the Deep South, who formed the Confederate States of America. However,

to convey the need for unification of citizens based on equality and freedom. Abraham Lincoln
states that "all men are created equal," to show that this war was to put out the image that every man
should not be treated differently from one another. Lincoln uses the quote to show that he believes in
equality and unification because those men who went to fight in the war came together to gain
freedom and equality and the citizens should not let the people who fought die in vain. He also
proclaims "and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from
the earth", which discloses the fact that the people who fought

The Gettysburg Address By Johnathon Hennessey
"Four Score and Seven Years Ago" is one of the most famously well–known statements in American
History. This was the opening line to The Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln on
November 9th in 1863. This speech was given during the Civil War, with the Unionists on one side
and the Secessionists on the other. America was one of the very few countries in which slavery was
still legal. The Unionists (northern states), were supporters of the United States federal government
and wanted to abolish slavery. The Secessionists (southern states), rejected the federal government
by claiming separation from the union and wanted slavery to remain legal. Slavery was an enormous
issue during this time period, so prominent that it notably divided the once united country into two.
The Gettysburg Address by Johnathon Hennessey uses Lincoln's words to tell the story of the Civil
War, starting at 1776 and stretching into present day through the use of cartoons.
This book is based on Abraham Lincoln's speech The Gettysburg Address. Hennessey has broken
the book into separate chapters named after passages in Lincoln's speech. These chapters then
indulge into historical cartoons by sharing a rich background of the topic. He covers the meaning of
the speech, of course, but he also dives into great detail of historical events, a couple examples being
when America was founded, the Revolution and the motivations of the Civil War. Although this
book does cover the analysis of the speech, it does

How Lincoln's Gettysburg Address Inspired a Nation

  • 1. The Success Of The Gettysburg Address Abraham Lincoln was a great influence not only to this country, but also to other political leaders. He showed a great example of how just a few words can change so much about the U.S and how the people of the U.S live. He had many successes in his presidential years; one of his great successes was the emancipation proclamation, this document effected how the people of the U.S treated African Americans as well as give them right to own land and vote. He also wrote and delivered the Gettysburg Address, this speech gave people much to think about. The Gettysburg Address also gave many ideas that they soon put into perspective. The speech, Gettysburg Address, was written in Gettysburg Pennsylvania after the Gettysburg battle. According to Civil War Can Trust, this battle was between the union led by George G. Meade and the confederates led by Robert E. Lee. The union had 93,921 men and the confederates had 71,699; from those there were 51,112 casualties from both sides of the battle field. It was after the war that president Lincoln went to Pennsylvania to deliver his, now famous, speech the Gettysburg Address along with other political leaders. The Gettysburg Address was written by the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. However, he immediately counters this imagery by emphasizing how the U.S citizens cannot mourn and commemorate the dead but het must finish what they began. Lincoln does this by employing the syntactical use of parallelism. Lincoln further demonstrates that even though there was much blood splattered we can not just mourn for them–– "we cannot dedicate –– we cannot consecrate –– we cannot hallow–– this ground." Through the use of parallelism and the repiton of the phrase "we can not," Lincoln is immediately enabled to speak on the same grounds as his audience–as a collaborative effort. Although, more importantly, by establishing more credibility through the repetition of the phrase "we cannot" the audience will essentially believe and follow what Lincoln is declaring since the phrase is almost as if Lincoln is ordering his audience. In this case he is ordering the audience not to let these soldiers die in vain. He is also commanding his audience to stay strong, because if the people are then the nation is ... • 27. The Gettysburg Address Thesis Lincoln, "Gettysburg Address" Analysis The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by Abraham Lincoln at a cemetery for Union soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. While this address may not seem controversial today, it was completely radical in 1863. When Lincoln began his speech, he first referenced the Founding Fathers and what they had planned for the new nation. We can easily connect this speech to previous readings, because Lincoln drew words from the Declaration of Independence as he said that the new nation was supposedly based on the idea that "all men are created equal." Lincoln was essentially saying that the Founding Fathers were merely the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and not the signers of the Constitution. This speech was a message to the Confederates who consistently pointed out that the Constitution did not prohibit slavery. Lincoln implied that the Founding Fathers expressed what they really wanted for the United States in the Declaration of Independence. It was the same place where the Battle of Gettysburg happened. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the Union and the Confederate soldiers, the North against the South. This battle was fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863 and nearly 46,000 men lost their lives on those tragic days (Rush, 2018). The final speech was created as a result of reflecting on experiences and events that began when Lincoln was first invited to give the speech and ended when he stepped to the platform in Gettysburg (Johnson 55). The words and context began in Washington but developed over the trip to Gettysburg in as many as five different versions. .Lincoln requested and was given information about the national cemetery prior to departing from Washington so that he could speak with confidence about the battlefield. Lincoln was known for composing his speeches thoughtfully and was known as a slow writer who liked to tighten phrases and logic (Wills 28). On the morning of the Gettysburg address, Lincoln toured the battlefield and visited the grave of a friend, General Reynolds. Martin Johnson, in "Writing the Gettysburg Address", says that the speech was created by a series of events in history based on Lincoln's experiences (Johnson 4). One such experience that influenced Lincoln was the death of his son in 1862. His grief over the loss of his son impacted the speech in that he showed emotion about the young men who had died on the battlefield. Lincoln, in dealing with death and the natural setting of human burial, does not mourn a single soldier but talks about the birth of a nation's life and its new birth of freedom (Wills 77). • 51. Gettysburg Address Declaration Of Independence Analysis The Gettysburg Address: While reading the Gettysburg Address, one main idea is that Abraham Lincoln is reassuring society that this the United States will not perish. A reading that is parallel to this would be the Declaration of Independence. In the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson describes the phrase that all men are created equal. In fact, the first line in the Gettysburg address is an allusion to the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence. By doing this, Lincoln was describing how the United States was founded. However, in that current moment, the phrase of "all men are created equal" had been forgotten. Another parallel in the Declaration of Independence would be when Jefferson speaks about war. He writes "as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war" (Jefferson). During the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln is standing on a battle ground where states from the same country had endured in battle. Lincoln also describes how he does not know how much more this nation can take (Lincoln). His statement is relevant to the Declaration of Independence. Gettysburg Address Failure Today, the Gettysburg Address is praised for being one of the most renowned speeches in U.S. history, but despite its fame, it was not always viewed as being a complete success. It is important to realize that the views from the 1860's were very contrasting to those of today, including how people viewed Lincoln and his speech. One newspaper article from the time period puts this into perspective. The Harrisburg Patriot & Union Newspaper company wrote an article Tuesday, November 24th of 1863 recognizing "the silly remarks of the President" (Pengelly). It also goes on to note that, "... for the credit of the nation we are willing that the veil of oblivion shall be dropped over them and that they shall be no more repeated or thought of" (Pengelly). In general, the article basically mocks the president, specifically noting how short and pathetic his speech was. • 73. The Gettysburg Address Analysis The American Civil War consisted of much loss and a significantly divided nation; however, it also served as an opportunity for President Lincoln to remind the people of their nation's foundation of equality and unity. He gave this reminder through the "Gettysburg Address," which even today remains a strong example of the values that the forefathers of the United States founded the nation on. The context of this speech was during a time of bloodshed and hatred, which portrays how it was a turning point in the history of the United States. The civil war is perhaps one of the most defining events in the United States' history, as it was a test for how the nation would be perceived. Fortunately, in just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly, reminded the disillusioned public why the Union had to fight and win the Civil War, and about a much bigger picture that was of concern: freedom and equality. The American Civil war began due to uncompromising differences between the free and slave states and the government's ability to prohibit slavery in territories that were not yet deemed as states. At this time, Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election as the first Republican president whose platform revolved around keeping slavery out of the territories. As a result, seven slave states seceded despite Lincoln and his administration not believing in succession as legitimate. • 77. The Gettysburg Address By Johnathon Hennessey "Four Score and Seven Years Ago" is one of the most famously well–known statements in American History. This was the opening line to The Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln on November 9th in 1863. This speech was given during the Civil War, with the Unionists on one side and the Secessionists on the other. America was one of the very few countries in which slavery was still legal. The Unionists (northern states), were supporters of the United States federal government and wanted to abolish slavery. The Secessionists (southern states), rejected the federal government by claiming separation from the union and wanted slavery to remain legal. Slavery was an enormous issue during this time period, so prominent that it notably divided the once united country into two. The Gettysburg Address by Johnathon Hennessey uses Lincoln's words to tell the story of the Civil War, starting at 1776 and stretching into present day through the use of cartoons. This book is based on Abraham Lincoln's speech The Gettysburg Address. Hennessey has broken the book into separate chapters named after passages in Lincoln's speech. These chapters then indulge into historical cartoons by sharing a rich background of the topic. He covers the meaning of the speech, of course, but he also dives into great detail of historical events, a couple examples being when America was founded, the Revolution and the motivations of the Civil War. Although this book does cover the analysis of the speech, it does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
