La Grande Jatte Analysis
George Seurat created a Sunday on La Grande Jatte in 1886. Its medium is oil on canvas and it is a painting of scenery using a technique known as
pointillism. It is currently located in New York, New York on display at the Museum of Modern Art. After a year and a half, Seurat quit school.
Following one year of compulsory military service, he returned to art, but worked on his own, producing small–scale paintings and drawings. His work
in black and white bears the earliest mark of his artistic maturity. This is not surprising, given that drawing was the basis of academic training,
preceding lessons in oil paint. The early talent evident in his drawings would blossom into a highly refined and unique style in his paintings by the
spring of 1884,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting required sketches on panel, 25 drawings and three important preliminary studies. The skirt of the woman in the center with a parasol is
painted in an orange–pink hue. It casts a blue shadow. Her red jacket is seen against bright green grass. The orange dress of the young girl running (to
the right) has a blue–tinted shadow. The skirt of the woman with a parasol walking beside a man is predominantly purple, so it seems, but is made
up of a myriad of hues. Notice the lighter yellowish "halo" separating the skirt from the foreground grass, particularly just behind her skirt. At the
same time, Seurat defines form by brushstrokes: close, parallel strokes define the contour of the woman's bustle. He continuously experiments in his
manner of applying paint; in the sunlit grass, for example, short, even strokes are laid over one another. It is clear that Seurat never followed any of
the popular theories rigidly. His paintings are also intended to convey social commentary. The La Grande Jatte makes use of symbols. A monkey in
French (and female) is known as "singesse," denoting a prostitute. The smartly dressed woman is fishing but for what? Then, as now, spectators have
questioned Seurat's meaning. Whether Seurat intended the Bathers and this painting to be considered as pendants (a pair) is still debated; certainly he
contrasts the natural world with the unpleasant artificiality of bourgeois life, as these artists saw it. However, the critics applauded such elements as
the controlled surface of the painting, the use of aerial perspective, which gives an impression of space, and Seurat's deeply shadowed foreground that
leads into a light, bright distance. Strictly speaking, Pointillism refers to the technique of using dots of pure color in such a way that, seen at the
appropriate distance, they achieve maximum luminosity. However, a pointillist painting is no more "luminous" than anything else that is printed with
small dots,

La Grande Jatte By Georges Seurat Essay
The painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat may seem simple but is very complex and symbolic. The girl in
the center of the painting is the only character looking directly at the viewer. Almost as if Seurat painted her to be communicating something to the
audience. What that is can be found by looking at the time of which it was painted and the meaning and work behind the painting along with its
relational paintings. The elements in the painting, especially shade and color, reveal this underlying meaning and message. In the painting A Sunday
Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat uses color with shade to create symbolism.

Bathers at Asnieres is a literal mirror painting of La Grande Jatte figuratively, directionally, and in terms of style and society. In this painting the french
working class is portrayed in light, symbolizing righteousness, opposed to the symbolic sinfulness in La Grande Jatte. The working class in Bathers at
Asnieres are on the left bank of the river Seine, while the bourgeoisie in La Grande Jatte are on the right bank. The river in between the two paintings,
although they are separate paintings, symbolizes harmony between the two classes which can further be symbolized by the unity of color that is in
Seurat's style of Pointillism. More unity is found in a possible connection between the two paintings. One of the bathers on the left bank is a young
boy who seems to be calling to the other side, possibly to the alike young girl who is pure and is wanted to come to the portrayed good side of the
river. The Seine river also runs all the way through Paris which Seurat uses to symbolize the diversity between the two groups but yet they all live in

Visual Analysis Of Art By George Seurat
Did you know that you could make art with just using dots? George Seurat did all of his paintings with just dots. He was born on December 2nd 1859
and died on March 29 1891. His death is still unknown but there's theories that he died from pneumonia or some other type of physical illness. There's
three paintings that stood out to me there full of color and have a lot of things incorprated into them.

Topic:Dot Art (Pointillism)
ICT set up–1 PC per student ( Every student will access to a computer each and computers are arranged in a group of 5to facilitate collaborative
working effectively.
Students' Characteristics:Mixed ability
Children have experienced making their artwork through drawing within lines, shapes and colouring or painting. They have thought that colouring or
painting can only be done with the traditional ways of drawing and painting. They have yet to explore different ways of doing art through painting with
dots, which is called pointillism (the pointillist technique) and includes aspects of colour mixing. They have not known that they can do dot art
through ICT. Pre–requisite knowledgeStudents have learnt about primary colours, red, yellow and blue. They have used to create lines and shapes
using primary colours to do their artpiece.
Learning Objectives:By the end of the lesson, the students/pupils will be able to:
1.Recognize that the 2 forms of art (drawing and painting) not only can be done with art equipments ( brushes and pencils or markers) but also with
the ICT tools.
2.Identify the mixtures of at least 2 different primary colours to obtain a secondary colour through computer by giving them an opportunity to be
exposed to online games.

Georges-Pierre Seurat Essay
During his short life, Georges–Pierre Seurat was an innovator in an age of innovators in the field of art. This french painter was a leader in a
movement called neo–impressionist in the late 19th century. Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called
pointillism or divisionism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle changes contained within the painting.
Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a
canvas. He was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art.

Usually when colors are produced by pigments being mixed physically, the subtractive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of pigments of the
primary colours produces less light; so if we mix red, blue and yellow pigments(subtractive primaries), we get a colour close to black. However
when colours are produced by the mixing of light, then the additive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of lights of the three primary colours
produces more light; so if we mix red, blue and green light(additive primaries) we get something close to white light. The brighter effect of pointillist
colours could rise from the fact that subtractive mixing is avoided and something closer to the effect of additive mixing is obtained even through
pigments (Pointillism)
The brushwork used to perform pointillistic color mixing is at the expense of traditional brushwork which could be used to delineate texture. Color
television receivers and computer screens, both CRT and LCD, use tiny dots of primary red, green, and blue to render color, and can thus be regarded
as a kind of pointillism (Pointillism).
Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual
experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects (Impressionism). Neoimpressionism was a late–19th century art movement led by

Essay about Georges Seurat
Georges Seurat used the pointillism approach and the use of color to make his painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, be as
lifelike as possible. Seurat worked two years on this painting, preparing it woth at least twenty drawings and forty color sketched. In these preliminary
drawings he analyzed, in detail every color relationship and every aspect of pictorial space. La Grande Jatte was like an experiment that involved
perspective depth, the broad landscape planes of color and light, and the way shadows were used. Everything tends to come back to the surface of the
picture, to emphasize and reiterate the two dimensional plane of which it was painted on. Also important worth mentioning is the way Seurat used and

Seurat used burnt sienna and light ochre in his previous painting entitled, Une Baignade. However, during his first phrase of work on La Grande Jatte,
he abandoned only the ochre, not the burnt sienna. Seurat seemed to have given up these pigments quite gradually, just as increasingly renounced
underpainting, ulimately allowing the white canvus to show through between the dots of color.
There is a mysterious vibration when one views La Grande Jatte. There is an effect of the paintings surface when ones eye glides inevitably from
dot to dot. This lets the eyes carry from the people located in the foreground to the beautiful landscape in the background. However, J.C Webster
rightly sees the actual charm of Pointillism in the awareness with which the colors can be seen, precisely because they do not merge unconciously
on the retina, ‘Finally, as regards to the overall effect of color in a given area, it seems to me that what takes place when touches one
color are introduced into an area of another color, or when touches of two colors are set side by side, is not retinal fusion, but rather a kind of
mental(not visual) averaging, for the area involved, of the colors or their values. That is, if some touches of ultramarine are introduced into an area of
yellow, we see both sets of touches, but we apprehend the area as having so much

Pablo Picasso And Picage Seurat Analysis
"How can a painting have so much to say" Is one question that people may ask themselves. Telling stories and expressing one's self in paintings
brings one to show others a new way of seeing and thinking about life. The canvas of every writer is easy to visualize or to relate to by how the
painter expressed himself and wanted to portray the message through a painting. From Pablo Picasso to George Seurat and to so much more. The
meaning and story of the panting's take you to a whole different world. They make us view things differently and see things in a new perspective by
how the painter is showing or expressing themselves. They explain what they had to go through or what was going on, by telling their story we can
feel the emotion behind it as well as how raw it makes one feel. Through the painting, one can make their assumptions about what the story is. The
beauty of art shows either the great or corrupt that the painter sees or the ongoing situation. They show the people different perspectives of what's
going on and they make you feel the same emotion that they put on the painting. We see art as a way of expression and it makes us connect to the
painting that we see. The art helps us understand the way the person behind the drawing felt or what they saw when it was going on. The beauty of art
is that it lets everyone express themselves through painting, so we can tell our story. Art is expressed through 1) human culture, 2) emotion, and 3)
communication.
Through human culture, the artist shows the emotion that takes place. Every artist expresses them in a unique way. They focus on things that catch
their eyes or things that they feel are important. The artist paints to show the world many different sides of human culture as well as current events. For
example, Pablo Picasso painted a painting named Guernica which symbolized the horrors of war and as a result, has become an anti–war symbol. He
was protesting the bombing of Guernica. On the far left is a woman, head back, screaming in pain and grief, holding the lifeless body of her dead
child. This is one of the most devastating and unforgettable images in the painting. To her right is the head and partial body of a large white bull, the

A Sunday On La Grande Jatte Analysis
I chose A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Geroges Seurat for my critical analysis. When I was in 4th grade, my gifted class studied this artwork by
Seurat. After studying this piece, we were allowed to replicate A Sunday on La Grande Jatte in the form of a mural in one of the hallways. I was
beyond fascinated with the different colored "dots" we were using, and how in the end it all came together as a whole. Seurat's pointillism technique
catches my eye each time I see a piece of his, and to this day, I am in awe of this particular piece. In my opinion, his creation of pointillism is
outstanding. I am amazed at how the dots somehow create an undeniable texture. It looks as if Georges Seurat captured a fuzzy picture of the scene he

The Impact Of Post Impressionism
In the late 19th century, younger artists found themselves frustrated within the confinements of Impressionism rules. Consequently, they wanted to
challenge these limitations to focus on the structural, emotional and symbolic elements within their works. So, what mark did the Post–Impressionism
Movement leave within the story of Art ? The Impressionism Movement affected the evolution of modern art. This is due to the introduction of painting
'en plein air' and the style which is recognisable by short brushstrokes, intense pure colour and natural light.Consequently, landscapes both in the city
and the countryside became their most natural and influential subject. Emerging artists found the limitations of Impressionism frustrating. Therefore,

Vincent Van Gogh Research Paper
To many Van Gogh is a household name, and an iconic tortured artist. Van Gough's commitment to the spirituality with in man and nature led to his
unique style and content that led to dramatic and emotional canvases, canvases that convey much more than just a subject. The son of Theodorus
Van Gogh a protestant pastor, and Ana Cornelia Carbentus, Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born into this world on March 30,1853. Vincent was the
first of five children and was born in Groot Zundert, a modest town in Dutch Brabant. Exactly one year prior to his birth Ana his mother had given
birth to a stillborn child tragically named Vincent also. According to the book Van Gogh It states that Vincent grew up "burdened by a fatal sense of
guilt, as if he felt that his life had only been possible because of the sacrifice of another existence." It has been said that Vincent was a lonely child
who spent most of his time roaming the fields of the countryside.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vincent took the already brilliant colors known for this movement and intensified them. He used complementary colors to add contrast; you can see the
blue of the street in the distance enhances this in the "sulphur yellow" of the terrace. Another aspect of the painting that was popular for the
post–impressionist movement is the impasto or thickly applied paint on the canvas. An artist similar to Van Gogh was Paul Gauguin, one of Van Gogh's

Pointillism Portrait Of Frida Khalo
Indeed, a pointillism piece begins it is only one dot on a single blank canvas. As small dots of different colors put closely together subject matter
comes to form a complete composition. Although in its separate color alone on the canvas it would be empty and underdeveloped as a single dot.
Art begins with a simple dot (point) is where all art begins, but when the painted dots pairs with a creative solution and ingenuity life on canvas
begins. With the use of the colored painted dots neighboring other colored dots soon form to create difference sizes, shapes, colors, and lighting to
speak as a strong message. An example of a pointillist piece exhibit found below.

Analysis Paper : Paul Cezanne
Contextual Analysis Paper: Paul Cezanne One of the most influential painters of the twentieth century was Paul Cezanne. He was willing to break the
traditionally accepted artistic practices in order to better portray his artistic creativity. Cezanne became part of the movement following the
Impressionists called the Post–Impressionism movement. The artists who were the driving forces behind this movement were Gauguin, Van Gogh,
Seurat, and Cezanne. These artists were grouped together because they were the avant–garde artists of the time period, who wanted to be able to
express their emotions rather than simply representing what they saw. Cezanne's Mont Sainte–Victoire seen from The Bibemus Quarry was painted in
1985. Mont Sainte–Victoire is a mountain that is in the South of France and overlooks the Aix–en–Provence, which happens to be the hometown of
Paul Cezanne. This work exemplifies the Post–Impressionistic techniques because Cezanne utilized the avant–garde techniques, while at the same time
demonstrating the relationship between the artist and the work. This work embodies the period style because it contains avant–garde geometric shapes
to define the forms, colors, and interpretations that were important to the Post–Impressionists. First off, the harshness of the lines goes hand in hand
with the shapes that exist in the work. The shapes tend to be simplified which demonstrates that Cezanne wanted things to appear as if they could be
broken down. He utilized an

Paintings of the Old Masters
Look at the color red, a color known for its beauty and while it may not be in everybody's catalogue of beauty, it cannot be denied of its intensity. If
one is showed a stunning painting of a red rose, one of the descriptions that could apply to that paining is beauty: seeing such an elegant spectacle of
nature being emulated on paper can be quite stimulating. Another description that could be associated with a red rose is passion, as such a color may
leave one energized and spontaneous; however how would one respond if they were told that the painting of the rose was painted with blood. Now a
painting that once may have suggested the aspects of beauty and passion, may stir descriptions such as fear, aggression, danger and yet passion as
well; therefore, bringing one to the understanding that "Every image embodies a way of seeing" (Berger, 142). This is why paintings should be
viewed as a spectacle; hence, this brings me to the painting I was presented with by John Berger in his book Ways of seeing in which he argues how
through reproduction the modern context of the Old Masters' paintings severed them from what they meant in the time of their production. The
painting that demanded my attention was Wheatfield with Crows by Van Gogh, something that may seem simple at first but is rich with emotion.
Through such a work of art I've come to understand that paintings are a medium where an artist can illustrate his words/feelings and express

One of the last topics we discussed in class turned out to be a form of art that probably interests me more than almost every other type of art that we
have discussed this entire semester. That form of art is the impressionist style of painting. I really love all the different brush strokes that form
different images for different people. I also enjoy much of the images that the impressionists painted, because they are usually very relaxed and mellow
images that put you into a comfortable place. The post–impressionist period, especially very early post–impressionist, is even better I think. I think it's
better because it is just a little more refined and puts more emphasis on the figure and form of different objects. Since I enjoyed the post–impressionist's

Museum Visit: A Sunday on La Grande Jatte I went to The Art Institute of Chicago on a Thursday when it was free for Illinois resident and when there
were different exhibitions going on. There was long line at the entrance near the museum at 6pm in the evening. I went alone because I thought I can

museum, there were colorful Indian Modern art exhibited for the occasion. They were big and vibrant. The was also a special exhibition of Tarsila

Salvador Dali and Francis Bacon. I was fascinated with Salvador Dali's Venus de Milo with Drawers. The drawers unnaturalistically located on a
human body was intriguing. The depth of the human mind and subconsciousness are creatively represented by these drawers on Venus de Milo.

Research Paper On Pointillism
I came up with the idea of doing a pointillism of my cat because I did a pointillism three years ago in an art class at the school. While doing this
pointillism, I discovered that I actually really enjoy making them and I love the fact that an entire piece of art can be created from just beginning with
a single dot. Doing a pointillism of my cat is an important idea to me because my pets are a huge part in my life. Growing up I've always been
surrounded by animals whether it be cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, hamsters, fish, geckos and frogs. Cats have always strongly stood out to me as my
favourite animal and my cats provide me with so much love so I wanted to make a piece of art to remember one of my cats by. I started working on this
pointillism simply because I was bored one day and really felt like creating a pointillism was a good way to make the time pass, since they take a
long time to do and they require constant work. The first idea that popped into my mind was a pointillism of my cat, ... Show more content on

Impressionism takes the moment at hand and depicts it with light and color. George Seurat was influenced by Impressionism using modern subjects
and urban leisure scenes. He used color characterizing of Impressionism but also made arrangements based on color theory. Seurat wanted to capture all
the colors that interacted to make their own appearance which differed in thought to Impressionism of putting colors next to each other to create colors
that blended optically. Seurat helped move Impressionism into Post–Impressionism by developing a systematic structured way of painting.

The way the sun pours down on the people, the rest of the canvas basks in the sun whereas the shadows are a darker green hue on the lighter green
grass. The way the sun is portrayed, it looks as if it's mid–afternoon. Seurat's pointillism shows the light coming from the left onto the people and
objects. The trees show the special blending effects of the colors. To the left of the painting, the use of white creates a light and as the eye moves to
the right, it blends into the color of the greens of the trees. Here, Seurat is placing white and green next to each other. The brushwork of the painting is
dotlike with the dots varying in size and shape. These individuals dots blend together into one scene.
The painting's perspective is to the left with the people all looking that way toward the river. The people in the front of the painting are closer to the
eye. The woman in the front and that man walking with her are the biggest figures in the picture. These sizes help balance the artwork. Lines were
mostly avoided with the use of shading for a softer effect.
Seurat's painting is one of the most reproduced paintings. Initially, pointillism was not received well as this new painting style was like nothing else

Art Analysis Of Starrry Night By Vincent Van Gogh
The painting Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, is an abstract post–impressionism piece of art that was painted by Vincent van Gogh in June of 1889.
Starry Night was painted on an oil canvas that shows the view from a window in Vincent van Gogh asylum room. The painting is filled with light to
dark colors that blend to show the emotion in the painting. The darkened colored sky seems to brighten up the other lighter colors making them stand
out more. The painting shows a variety of curved lines giving the piece an organic shape. Vincent van Gogh applied to his painting a rough texture by
heavy brushstroke technique impasto. The painting is created in a 3 dimensional form so that if you look at the bottom of the painting you can see
the houses look as if they were a very great distance away. The painting provides us with a shallow space because of the space we perceive due to the
landscape of the painting.
The painting has an asymmetrical balance to it because of the variety it has with its shapes, size, and colors in the painting. The painting provides us
with repetition due to the strokes of the paint brush that Vincent van Gogh performed on the piece. Vincent van Gogh provides us with a rhythm within
the sky, the stars are repeating creating that rhythm within the work of art. The painting provides us with movement, like how our eyes start at the top

Un Dimanche Apres Midi a l'ile de la grande Jatte is a french sentence for A Sunday afternoon on the island of the big river. This painting is also
known to be a very big one,10ft wide by 7ft tall, almost the size of a minivan. The size of the painting justifies why it took Seurat from 1884 until 1886
to finish it. The painting was located in the Art Institute of Chicago from 1926 until 1958. Seurat's ambition was to include science, especially that of
color that had been created by Chevreui and Rood, in the techniques of impressionism. The scientific way to making a painting seem brighter and more
exposed was made by placing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seurat came up with this idea in 1884, after her rejected and rebelled from impression. He was interested in dividing colors into its basic forms;
For example, if an artist wanted to mix red and blue together to get a purple color, they wouldn't get the perfect shade that exists in real life. This is
because the origin of the red color has many shades and the same goes for the blue color. Therefor, mixing them together will not result in a natural
and luminous color. On the other hand, the solution to this was to take a blue color and a red color and place them closely next to each other without
mixing them. In this case, as the light is being received by your eye, the light waves are doing the mixing for themselves. This is where the color
theory is included and manipulated by George Seurat into a technique used in painting. Other famous artists that applied this technique in their
paintings include, Paul Signac in his painting The Town Beach (1887) , Camille Pissarro in his Self–Portrait (1903) and Henri Matisse in his painting
Calme Et Volupte (1904– 1905).

Camille Pissarro's 'Apple Harvest In Europe'
Apple Harvest in Europe
Introduction
Apple Harvest is a painting created by a French artist named Camille Pissarro in 1888. The artwork is derived from the European culture focusing on
the style of neo–impressionism or pointillism. The painting is made with the use of oil on canvas and currently located inside the Dallas Museum
of Art in second floor in the section of European art. It depicts a lively image of farmers engaging in their daily activities where they are picking
apples on a sunny day. The background of the landscape consists of a huge ranch with additional apple trees that gives a vibration of harvesting
season. Similarly, it is a form of a representational artwork portraying physical labor by the farmers during that period. Camille Pissarro seemed to
support the farmers of low social status and believed in hard work as some of his artworks are the representations of lives of these social groups
(Dallas Museum of Art 2017). In the painting "Apple Harvest", he tries to picture working peasants in an apple farm in the French Countryside
(Dallas Museum of Art 2017). This paper is an integration of the analysis of formal elements and principles relevant to the art work "Apple Harvest"
and my experience of observation of this piece of art at the Dallas Museum of Art including a reflection upon the visit. Figure 1: "Apple Harvest",

Analysis Of Paul Cezanne's ' Mont Sainte Victoire '
One of the most influential painters of the twentieth century was Paul Cezanne. He was willing to break the traditionally accepted artistic practice in
order to better portray his artistic creativity. Cezanne was became part of the movement that followed the Impressionists called the Post–Impressionism
movement. The artists who were the driving forces behind this movement were Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, and Cezanne. These artists were placed in
this grouping because they were the avant–garde artists of the time period, who wanted to be able to express their emotions rather than simply
representing what they saw. Cezanne's Mont Sainte–Victoire seen from The Bibemus Quarry was painted in 1985. Mont Sainte–Victoire is a mountain
that is in the South of France and overlooks the Aix–en–Provence, which happens to be the hometown of Paul Cezanne. This work exemplifies the
Post–Impressionistic techniques because Cezanne utilized the avant–garde techniques, while at the same time demonstrating the relationship between
the artist and the work. This work embodies the period style because it contains avant–garde geometric shapes to define the forms, colors, and
interpretations that were important to the Post–Impressionists. First off, the harshness of the lines goes hand in hand with the shapes that exist in the
work. The shapes tend to be simplified shapes, which demonstrates that Cezanne wanted things to appear as if they could be broken down. Cezanne
utilizes an array of geometric

Georges Seurat 's A Sunday Morning On The Island Of La...
Three weeks ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. It was established in 1879 and has since expanded its collection to approximately three
hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason
I chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person
because it is so iconic. While at the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my time in "The Elizabeth Hammond Stickney Gallery". There were three
pieces in this gallery: Saint Michael and the Devil, The Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and Saint George Killing the Dragon. Each piece was made in
the Renaissance period in Europe in the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. I believe the main reason these pieces are grouped together is that they all
contain a depiction of a saint. Another reason for this arrangement is that all these paintings all represent the survival of holy figures and the death
of the evil ones. This is shown in each piece by either a saint killing an evil creature or the birth of a holy saint. The piece I will analyze from the
previously mentioned gallery is Saint George Killing the Dragon by Bernat Martorell which was made in 1434/35. This piece is a painting made on a
support of panel with a media of tempera and stucco. The main subject of the painting is a man wearing armor on a white horse. The man on the

Aesthetic Sentiment and Judgement According to David Hume, a great philosopher in 18th century, "Beauty in things exists in the mind which
contemplates them." As a result, "good art" is the judgement of individual base on their positive sentiment toward an artwork, and that is called the
taste of art. Besides, David Hume also believes there is something will make an artwork better than others. To experience that belief, after falling in
love with two artworks–"A Bull Fight" and "The Bonaventure Pine"– in the exhibition at Museum of Fine Art Houston, based on the personal taste of
art to state that "A Bull Fight" is better artwork than "The Bonaventure Pine" even though both are beautiful.
The first interesting artwork is "A Bull Fight" by Jacquez Raymond Brascassat (1804–1867), who is a French artist. "A Bull Fight" is a European art,
painted with oil on canvas medium, and published in 1855. Its dimensions are about 57x75 inches, which show a close ratio to the real objects. This is
a large oil painting of two bulls fighting, with a dog and a cow watching. There are some physical damages on this piece of art. However, "A Bull

Speech On Post Impressionism
Theory & History of Art: Group presentations

VA 2.4
Good morning to everyone. Today, we will be delving into the topic of post–impressionism, and specifically on Vincent Van Gogh.
Beginning slide (Slide: Jewel)
What is the context of the art movement? (Tricia, Slide: Tricia)
Post–impressionism, which was primarily a French art movement, developed approximately between 1886 and 1905. Subdivisions of
Post–impressionism include Divisionism and Pointillism, which involves using dots and patches of color to form a picture. Due to these characteristics,
post–impressionism ushered in a new era of painting, and paved the way for many future art movements such as fauvism and cubism.
Its antecedent being Impressionism, post–impressionism contains traces of elements from that movement, but has its own diverging styles too. For
example, the main difference between impressionism and post–impressionism is that wh impressionism emphasised on accurately depicting light and
its changing qualities, post–impressionism focused on showing the artist's memories and their emotions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

One of the main characteristics of post–impressionism is the use of pure and rich colours which are applied thickly, forming multiple layers of paint.
Not only is it applied to formed thick layers, the paint is applied in short, swift brushstrokes. Structure and form are heavily present in post
impressionism artworks. On top of that, post impressionism artworks tend to more expression of emotions. This was due to the fact that artists focused
on using symbolic and personal meanings in hopes of connecting with the viewer on a deeper and less impersonal

Similarities Between Kirkland And George Seurat
Connecting the Dots George Seurat and Vance Kirkland were avante garde artists from two different time periods who experimented with new
techniques and ideas in painting. Both placed a heavy focus on color theory, which is believed to be the most important aspect for a career as a
painter. The two of them were able to develop their own dot painting styles and both were heavily criticized for their newly invented techniques. Seurat
was accused of being a cold–blooded mystifyer by one critic of his time. With exaggerated titles such as The Energy Of Explosions 24 Billion Years
B.C. (1978 no. 3), New York galleries of the 1970s criticized Kirkland for the names of his paintings, because the titles to his paintings are not

Each one contains a subject matter of either urban scenes, landscapes or seashores. A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is his most famous painting and the
one that set the stage for his new found techniques. The size of the painting was very much different than that of the smaller paintings of the
Impressionists. It was huge for the time, roughly taking up an entire wall, the painting commanded attention from any viewer within the vicinity. The
colors of the dots blend together optically by the viewer's eyes to create a magnificently composed work of art. Kirkland on the other hand, used
subject matter that was out of this world. By attaching cosmic names to his paintings such as The Energy of Explosions 24 Billion Years B.C. (1978
no. 3), Mysteries in Vertical Space, Space Mysteries, Five Red–Orange Suns In Space, Blue Mysteries Near the Sun, and Blue Vibrations In Pink
Space, it's clear to the viewer his subject matter is out of this world. Before his death, Kirkland was able to create for different series of dot paintings,
Energy of Vibrations, Mysteries, Explosions, and Forces. There is also an optional theme to an earlier pre–dot theme Organic Vibrations known as

Vincent Van Gogh Research Paper
Vincent Van Gogh: Artist Paper Vincent Van Gogh did not become famous until after his death at the age of 37 in July of 1890. He was born in
March of 1853. Van Gogh would be known as a troublesome boy who kept to himself and went on long walks through the country side. His mother
Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Father Theodorus (Dorus) Van Gogh struggled to understand their eldest son, this constant struggle would shape their
relationship and Van Gogh's life for years to come. Just as Van Gogh struggled as a boy in relationships with his family and friends he struggled
finding his calling as an artist. Van Gogh had explored the realms of working at art dealership's as well as becoming minister as his father was. After

blame himself for being a "half–strange half–tiresome person who brings only sorrow and loss.". "Vincent's attachment to his mother was profound.
Later in life, the sign of any mother and child could cause his eyes to "grow moist" and his "heart to melt," he confessed." It's possible that this

Inspired By Van Gogh
This painting was inspired by Van Gogh numerous paintings of flowers (usually sunflower) in vases. This piece was made in a face–to–face art class,
where one of my first projects was a to paint a piece modeled after any work from an artist of my choice. Flowers are something I have always drawn
or painted, usually my "go–to," so this seemed like an obvious choice for me. Unfortunately, I am unable to find the original painting I was examining
for my project, but Van Gogh had many pieces under that particular style. That being said, I started with a standard pencil to do the sketching as usual.
Later when it came to painting, we diluted the paint with oil and used a mixing spatula too. Over the entire course of creating the piece, I was adding

Les Grands Boulevard And La Grande Jatte
Through my analysis and comparison of Les Grands Boulevard and La Grande Jatte I hope to convey to the reader that these two paintings, although
painted in different styles, both illustrate the need to slow down and enjoy life. Les Grands Boulevards is a 20 1/2 x 25in. European oil on canvas
painting created by Pierre–Auguste Renoir in 1875 during the impressionism movement ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). The painting is currently
housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is another European oil on canvas painting.
Georges Seurat started this painting in 1884 during the post impressionism movement and completed it in 1886 ( "About This Artwork."). In 1889
Seurat made one final change to La Grande Jatte, restretching the canvas to 81 3/4 x 121 1/4in in order to add a painted border ( "About This
Artwork."). The painting is now located at the Art Institute of Chicago ( "About This Artwork.").
Renoir's use of blurred details, blended colors and optical effect of light and color in Les Grands Boulevard show a fleeting moment of contemporary
life in Paris in 1875.The painting depicts one of the so called grands boulevard of Paris. Brought about by the industrial revolution, the boulevard was
a newly restored and modernized urban setting at the time Renoir painted it. The painting shows a busy populated street with people going about their
day. Amidst the busy street we see a man sitting on a bench reading, two

George Seurat Research Paper
A Sunday Afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte
George Seurat, father of pointillism painting technique was born on December 2, 1859 and died in his early age of 31 on March 29,1891. The full
name of the artist is Georges Pierre Seurat and he was trained at the Г‰cole des Beaux–Arts, where he stepped out of the traditional way of painting
and invented his own way of painting through scientific technique of mixing colors. His techniques were beyond the styles of Impressionism, which
was the most acquired art technique of that age. After his birth on December 2, 1859, in Paris, France, his father was a customs official, he was not
at home that often which led Seurat, his brother and his sister to grow up with their mother Faivre. He learned arts in his early age from an uncle and
started formal education at the age of 16 from a local art school. He studied in the famous Ecole des Beaux–Arts in Paris starting from 1878 for a year,
he trained under artist Henri Lehmann and since the rules and the regulations of the school were strict, Seurat was frustrated and decided to leave
school. After he left in 1879, he did not left his study but instead started ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later in mid–1880s, Seurat formed a new artistic style of painting which is known as pointillism or Divisionism. Since, the colors were blended with

those colors from a distance provided the idea of optical mixing, meaning the colors would look like some other color when mixed and viewed from a
distance. After discovering this technique, he painted not only the subjects of everyday life but instead he, and his colleagues often painted the

The And The Coronation Of The Emperor And Madame Seurat 's...
The role of colour in paintings had a major change with the advent of Post Impressionism. Colour changed from the traditional Neo–classicists methods
to artists such as Seurat the Post–impressionist artist who was obsessed with the science behind art. . The main concepts I am discussing in terms of
how the role of colour has changed are: the traditional role of colour, what made artists change their focus, science discoveries about light, optics and
the difference between the colour use in the two styles; Neoclassicism and Post– Impressionism. Using Wolfflins model of interpretation I will
compare the two uses of colour in Jacques Lois David's "The Coronation of the Emperor and Empress" and Georges Seurat's "The Circus".
In Neoclassical painting the role of colour wasn't as important as the focus was more on the structure, form and composition of the painting. Many
paintings at the time were used to represent or record an event accurately. David was one of the leading French Neoclassical artists at the time. He
became Napoleon's first hand painter and was commissioned to capture many scenes during the French Revolution. David was classically trained at the
Academy and became an important figure in the canon of art. The main difference between the two art styles is the Neoclassical paintings mixed their
paint on a palette to get the blended colour they wanted whilst the Post Impressionists used the science of optics to blend the colour in the viewers' eye.

Paul Signac's Breakfast In The Dining Room
Paul Signac was a French painter who helped develop the pointillist style. He was born on November 11, 1863 in Paris, France where he began his
artistic career. He decided he wanted to become an artist after viewing an exhibition of Monet's work in 1880. His family were wealthy shopkeepers
and encouraged him to study architecture, however, his early interest in painting continued into adulthood. His father and grandpa were both
saddlemakers, but the store was still under his name. During the Franco–Prussian War, he was sent to northern France to live with his grandmother
because his family didn't want him to get into harm's way. Since Signac had to stay there for the time being, he was enrolled in a college named Rollin

These two artists shared an interest for science behind color and perception, so Signac worked with Seurat to create a painting style that used optical
effects. (Paul Signac) They applied small dabs of colors closely together on canvas, using various shades that appeared to merge from a distance. Using
pointillism, Signac created two paintings that became very popular, one of which, was called "Breakfast in the Dining Room" (Meyer). This painting
was actually based on his own family, and it featured his mother, grandfather and housekeeper. The figures present at the lunch table appear to be in
silence. It portrays a family that lacks interaction and a feeling of home.
Signac's style was very similar to his good friend, Georges Seurat. For example, Signac's oil painting "Breakfast in the Dining Room" appears to
look like Seurat's "Sunday in the Park on the Island of Grande Jatte".(Jackson) Signac based this pinwheel design on a Japanese print, but replaced it
with his own colors and patterns to represent himself. Till this day, it is still a mystery as to why Signac drew this, but it is rumored that both Seurat

Perhaps he had come to Arles for the sun and for him, it was an immense joy to live in such bright bedroom, bursting with colors. What is also
fascinating about this piece of art is how the painter highlights the simplicity of his bedroom through the medium of color: В« the pale lilac walls,
the floor of an old brown, the chairs and bed chrome yellow, the blood red cover, the orange little table and the blue basin", as the painter describes
it. Van Gogh asserted that he wanted to express a complete rest by handling all these different shades2. The color black, which could be evocating
a certain form of anguish, is almost nonexistent in this painting. Only the frame of the mirror and windows is black. We wonder if this could mean
that Van Gogh was afraid of his future and afraid to face up to reality. This is a possibility. In fact, despite the evidence of his happiness, present in
this painting, Van Gogh was not married2 and many clues here let us think that he wished to be. Although the bedroom is very sparsely furnished
and only contains essential items (which shows, in addition to the choice of colors, a great simplicity), we notice that many of these objects go
together in pairs (two pillows, two chairs, two portraits on the wall, two drawings, and even two doors). Thus, this painting on canvas was perhaps his
way of expressing his wish to meet someone and that his bedroom was arranged so as to welcome her. But because it was just him in this bedroom, he

Vincent Willem van Gogh is considered as one of the most renowned artist/painter in history, but like many others, his legacy and talent was brought to

Summary Of A Sunday On La Grande Jatte By Georges Seurat
"A Sunday on La Grande Jatte", depicting the accumulation of individuals on the island of the Grande Jatte, was painted by Georges Seurat from
1884 to 1886. To create this painting, Seurat utilized multiple pure pigments, a canvas, and a technique called Pointillism. Pointillism is a
technique of applying dots of pure paint on canvas. Imagine glancing at a park that borders a body of water on the left, and growth of trees on the
right. The foreground, in a shadow, contains animals along with males and females in various classes of society, based on the way they are dressed.

In addition to this oddity, one of the animals present is a monkey. The individuals in this region are wearing both warm and cool colors, invoking a
sense of balance and calmness. For example, one of the men lying down is wearing an orange shirt, and one of the females is wearing a pink
flower on her black hat. This woman wearing the pink flower on her hat also has a rather large buttock. It is evident Seurat uses form to accentuate
this region of the body with curves in the fold lines of the fabric at the buttock region of the dress, along with straight fold lines from the bottom of
the dress to the buttock. The middle ground consists of many individuals performing various activities, ranging from sailing to relaxing in the shade
created by light failing to pass through the foliage of tall trees. One of the most noticeable individuals is a female fishing in the body of water while in
the park. The background is similar to the composition of the middleground, except it has

Audley Book Review
Introduction Audley is a parish which has been fortunate with regard to historians. The antiquarians Richard Parrott and William Kelsall produced
two invaluable 17th and early 18th century works. In the early 20th century Thomas Warham took a series of photographs that capture a forgotten
parish. In the late 20th century both Runce and more notably Robert Speake produced indispensable reading and Speake followed this as the new
millennium dawned with a second work while David Dyble published his work on Chesterton and Apedale, which encroaches into the parish. These
works capture the essence of the parish as a whole but Audley is a large parish, in 1834 it was 11,000 acres and split into 7 townships. These
townships represent a rich diversity of character, from the agricultural Eardley End to the industrial Bignall End. J.D. Pratten and C.J.Lovatt made one

There is a man relaxing and laying on the ground smoking a pipe with a red cut off shirt and a blue hat. Next to him is a man in a suit and a top hat
sitting up. And between them and behind a little is a woman in a navy blue dress with a nice sun hat. The people in this painting all seem to be
different in many ways. The clothing is the most obvious. Their clothes show the class difference amongst the people. There are people in suits
and others in jeans. It's good to see people of all classes mixed together in one painting. There are plenty of animals too there is a solid black Great
Dane type dog. Toward the middle of the piece is a woman with a red blouse and a pink skirt holding an umbrella and holding a little girl's hand.
They seem to be mother and daughter. The little girl is in a white hat and dress. To the left and slightly behind them are two people sitting beside a

possibly be trying to look at the people on the boats. There's a lovely couple with the man standing and the woman kissing his cheek. Everyone
must be having a good time. The amount of color and slight and subtle detail put into the painting really gives it life and movement. There are two
cute animals, a dog, maybe a beagle, and a cat. Next to them, a woman in a dark navy blue dress with a hat and an umbrella resting open on her
shoulder. By her there's possibly a mother and daughter or sisters sitting together. The younger one is so content with her beautiful flowers while the
other and older one admires the busy pond. Running around the trees is a girl in an orange dress, her youth shows intensely with her swift playful

La Grande Jatte Analysis

  • 1. La Grande Jatte Analysis George Seurat created a Sunday on La Grande Jatte in 1886. Its medium is oil on canvas and it is a painting of scenery using a technique known as pointillism. It is currently located in New York, New York on display at the Museum of Modern Art. After a year and a half, Seurat quit school. Following one year of compulsory military service, he returned to art, but worked on his own, producing small–scale paintings and drawings. His work in black and white bears the earliest mark of his artistic maturity. This is not surprising, given that drawing was the basis of academic training, preceding lessons in oil paint. The early talent evident in his drawings would blossom into a highly refined and unique style in his paintings by the spring of 1884,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The painting required sketches on panel, 25 drawings and three important preliminary studies. The skirt of the woman in the center with a parasol is painted in an orange–pink hue. It casts a blue shadow. Her red jacket is seen against bright green grass. The orange dress of the young girl running (to the right) has a blue–tinted shadow. The skirt of the woman with a parasol walking beside a man is predominantly purple, so it seems, but is made up of a myriad of hues. Notice the lighter yellowish "halo" separating the skirt from the foreground grass, particularly just behind her skirt. At the same time, Seurat defines form by brushstrokes: close, parallel strokes define the contour of the woman's bustle. He continuously experiments in his manner of applying paint; in the sunlit grass, for example, short, even strokes are laid over one another. It is clear that Seurat never followed any of the popular theories rigidly. His paintings are also intended to convey social commentary. The La Grande Jatte makes use of symbols. A monkey in French (and female) is known as "singesse," denoting a prostitute. The smartly dressed woman is fishing but for what? Then, as now, spectators have questioned Seurat's meaning. Whether Seurat intended the Bathers and this painting to be considered as pendants (a pair) is still debated; certainly he contrasts the natural world with the unpleasant artificiality of bourgeois life, as these artists saw it. However, the critics applauded such elements as the controlled surface of the painting, the use of aerial perspective, which gives an impression of space, and Seurat's deeply shadowed foreground that leads into a light, bright distance. Strictly speaking, Pointillism refers to the technique of using dots of pure color in such a way that, seen at the appropriate distance, they achieve maximum luminosity. However, a pointillist painting is no more "luminous" than anything else that is printed with small dots, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. La Grande Jatte By Georges Seurat Essay The painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat may seem simple but is very complex and symbolic. The girl in the center of the painting is the only character looking directly at the viewer. Almost as if Seurat painted her to be communicating something to the audience. What that is can be found by looking at the time of which it was painted and the meaning and work behind the painting along with its relational paintings. The elements in the painting, especially shade and color, reveal this underlying meaning and message. In the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat uses color with shade to create symbolism. Most of the people in the painting are in shadow representing evil or sin. The people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bathers at Asnieres is a literal mirror painting of La Grande Jatte figuratively, directionally, and in terms of style and society. In this painting the french working class is portrayed in light, symbolizing righteousness, opposed to the symbolic sinfulness in La Grande Jatte. The working class in Bathers at Asnieres are on the left bank of the river Seine, while the bourgeoisie in La Grande Jatte are on the right bank. The river in between the two paintings, although they are separate paintings, symbolizes harmony between the two classes which can further be symbolized by the unity of color that is in Seurat's style of Pointillism. More unity is found in a possible connection between the two paintings. One of the bathers on the left bank is a young boy who seems to be calling to the other side, possibly to the alike young girl who is pure and is wanted to come to the portrayed good side of the river. The Seine river also runs all the way through Paris which Seurat uses to symbolize the diversity between the two groups but yet they all live in the same city. Paris is whole but yet it is ... • 3. Visual Analysis Of Art By George Seurat Did you know that you could make art with just using dots? George Seurat did all of his paintings with just dots. He was born on December 2nd 1859 and died on March 29 1891. His death is still unknown but there's theories that he died from pneumonia or some other type of physical illness. There's three paintings that stood out to me there full of color and have a lot of things incorprated into them. A sunday afternoon on the island of LaGrande Jatte is one of his popular paintings it entirely made out of tiny dots. He painted it between 1884–1886 its 81.6 x 121.2 inches the painting is in chicago at the art institute of chicago. • 5. Georges-Pierre Seurat Essay During his short life, Georges–Pierre Seurat was an innovator in an age of innovators in the field of art. This french painter was a leader in a movement called neo–impressionist in the late 19th century. Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called pointillism or divisionism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle changes contained within the painting. Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a canvas. He was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art. Pointillism is a form of painting in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Usually when colors are produced by pigments being mixed physically, the subtractive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of pigments of the primary colours produces less light; so if we mix red, blue and yellow pigments(subtractive primaries), we get a colour close to black. However when colours are produced by the mixing of light, then the additive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of lights of the three primary colours produces more light; so if we mix red, blue and green light(additive primaries) we get something close to white light. The brighter effect of pointillist colours could rise from the fact that subtractive mixing is avoided and something closer to the effect of additive mixing is obtained even through pigments (Pointillism) The brushwork used to perform pointillistic color mixing is at the expense of traditional brushwork which could be used to delineate texture. Color television receivers and computer screens, both CRT and LCD, use tiny dots of primary red, green, and blue to render color, and can thus be regarded as a kind of pointillism (Pointillism). Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects (Impressionism). • 6. Essay about Georges Seurat Georges Seurat used the pointillism approach and the use of color to make his painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, be as lifelike as possible. Seurat worked two years on this painting, preparing it woth at least twenty drawings and forty color sketched. In these preliminary drawings he analyzed, in detail every color relationship and every aspect of pictorial space. La Grande Jatte was like an experiment that involved perspective depth, the broad landscape planes of color and light, and the way shadows were used. Everything tends to come back to the surface of the picture, to emphasize and reiterate the two dimensional plane of which it was painted on. Also important worth mentioning is the way Seurat used and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Seurat used burnt sienna and light ochre in his previous painting entitled, Une Baignade. However, during his first phrase of work on La Grande Jatte, he abandoned only the ochre, not the burnt sienna. Seurat seemed to have given up these pigments quite gradually, just as increasingly renounced underpainting, ulimately allowing the white canvus to show through between the dots of color. There is a mysterious vibration when one views La Grande Jatte. There is an effect of the paintings surface when ones eye glides inevitably from dot to dot. This lets the eyes carry from the people located in the foreground to the beautiful landscape in the background. However, J.C Webster rightly sees the actual charm of Pointillism in the awareness with which the colors can be seen, precisely because they do not merge unconciously on the retina, ‘Finally, as regards to the overall effect of color in a given area, it seems to me that what takes place when touches one color are introduced into an area of another color, or when touches of two colors are set side by side, is not retinal fusion, but rather a kind of mental(not visual) averaging, for the area involved, of the colors or their values. That is, if some touches of ultramarine are introduced into an area of yellow, we see both sets of touches, but we apprehend the area as having so much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Pablo Picasso And Picage Seurat Analysis "How can a painting have so much to say" Is one question that people may ask themselves. Telling stories and expressing one's self in paintings brings one to show others a new way of seeing and thinking about life. The canvas of every writer is easy to visualize or to relate to by how the painter expressed himself and wanted to portray the message through a painting. From Pablo Picasso to George Seurat and to so much more. The meaning and story of the panting's take you to a whole different world. They make us view things differently and see things in a new perspective by how the painter is showing or expressing themselves. They explain what they had to go through or what was going on, by telling their story we can feel the emotion behind it as well as how raw it makes one feel. Through the painting, one can make their assumptions about what the story is. The beauty of art shows either the great or corrupt that the painter sees or the ongoing situation. They show the people different perspectives of what's going on and they make you feel the same emotion that they put on the painting. We see art as a way of expression and it makes us connect to the painting that we see. The art helps us understand the way the person behind the drawing felt or what they saw when it was going on. The beauty of art is that it lets everyone express themselves through painting, so we can tell our story. Art is expressed through 1) human culture, 2) emotion, and 3) communication. Through human culture, the artist shows the emotion that takes place. Every artist expresses them in a unique way. They focus on things that catch their eyes or things that they feel are important. The artist paints to show the world many different sides of human culture as well as current events. For example, Pablo Picasso painted a painting named Guernica which symbolized the horrors of war and as a result, has become an anti–war symbol. He was protesting the bombing of Guernica. On the far left is a woman, head back, screaming in pain and grief, holding the lifeless body of her dead child. This is one of the most devastating and unforgettable images in the painting. To her right is the head and partial body of a large white bull, the only unharmed and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. A Sunday On La Grande Jatte Analysis I chose A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Geroges Seurat for my critical analysis. When I was in 4th grade, my gifted class studied this artwork by Seurat. After studying this piece, we were allowed to replicate A Sunday on La Grande Jatte in the form of a mural in one of the hallways. I was beyond fascinated with the different colored "dots" we were using, and how in the end it all came together as a whole. Seurat's pointillism technique catches my eye each time I see a piece of his, and to this day, I am in awe of this particular piece. In my opinion, his creation of pointillism is outstanding. I am amazed at how the dots somehow create an undeniable texture. It looks as if Georges Seurat captured a fuzzy picture of the scene he was inspired ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Impact Of Post Impressionism In the late 19th century, younger artists found themselves frustrated within the confinements of Impressionism rules. Consequently, they wanted to challenge these limitations to focus on the structural, emotional and symbolic elements within their works. So, what mark did the Post–Impressionism Movement leave within the story of Art ? The Impressionism Movement affected the evolution of modern art. This is due to the introduction of painting 'en plein air' and the style which is recognisable by short brushstrokes, intense pure colour and natural light.Consequently, landscapes both in the city and the countryside became their most natural and influential subject. Emerging artists found the limitations of Impressionism frustrating. Therefore, they wanted to push the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Van Gough's commitment to the spirituality with in man and nature led to his unique style and content that led to dramatic and emotional canvases, canvases that convey much more than just a subject. The son of Theodorus Van Gogh a protestant pastor, and Ana Cornelia Carbentus, Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born into this world on March 30,1853. Vincent was the first of five children and was born in Groot Zundert, a modest town in Dutch Brabant. Exactly one year prior to his birth Ana his mother had given birth to a stillborn child tragically named Vincent also. According to the book Van Gogh It states that Vincent grew up "burdened by a fatal sense of guilt, as if he felt that his life had only been possible because of the sacrifice of another existence." It has been said that Vincent was a lonely child who spent most of his time roaming the fields of the countryside.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. Cezanne became part of the movement following the Impressionists called the Post–Impressionism movement. The artists who were the driving forces behind this movement were Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, and Cezanne. These artists were grouped together because they were the avant–garde artists of the time period, who wanted to be able to express their emotions rather than simply representing what they saw. • 14. Paintings of the Old Masters Look at the color red, a color known for its beauty and while it may not be in everybody's catalogue of beauty, it cannot be denied of its intensity. If one is showed a stunning painting of a red rose, one of the descriptions that could apply to that paining is beauty: seeing such an elegant spectacle of nature being emulated on paper can be quite stimulating. Another description that could be associated with a red rose is passion, as such a color may leave one energized and spontaneous; however how would one respond if they were told that the painting of the rose was painted with blood. Now a painting that once may have suggested the aspects of beauty and passion, may stir descriptions such as fear, aggression, danger and yet passion as well; therefore, bringing one to the understanding that "Every image embodies a way of seeing" (Berger, 142). This is why paintings should be viewed as a spectacle; hence, this brings me to the painting I was presented with by John Berger in his book Ways of seeing in which he argues how through reproduction the modern context of the Old Masters' paintings severed them from what they meant in the time of their production. The painting that demanded my attention was Wheatfield with Crows by Van Gogh, something that may seem simple at first but is rich with emotion. Through such a work of art I've come to understand that paintings are a medium where an artist can illustrate his words/feelings and express ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing Van Gogh And Georges Seurat One of the last topics we discussed in class turned out to be a form of art that probably interests me more than almost every other type of art that we have discussed this entire semester. That form of art is the impressionist style of painting. I really love all the different brush strokes that form different images for different people. I also enjoy much of the images that the impressionists painted, because they are usually very relaxed and mellow images that put you into a comfortable place. The post–impressionist period, especially very early post–impressionist, is even better I think. I think it's better because it is just a little more refined and puts more emphasis on the figure and form of different objects. Since I enjoyed the post–impressionist's ... While doing this pointillism, I discovered that I actually really enjoy making them and I love the fact that an entire piece of art can be created from just beginning with a single dot. Doing a pointillism of my cat is an important idea to me because my pets are a huge part in my life. I started working on this pointillism simply because I was bored one day and really felt like creating a pointillism was a good way to make the time pass, since they take a long time to do and they require constant work. The trees show the special blending effects of the colors. Art Analysis Of Starrry Night By Vincent Van Gogh The painting Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, is an abstract post–impressionism piece of art that was painted by Vincent van Gogh in June of 1889. Starry Night was painted on an oil canvas that shows the view from a window in Vincent van Gogh asylum room. The painting is filled with light to dark colors that blend to show the emotion in the painting. The darkened colored sky seems to brighten up the other lighter colors making them stand out more. The painting shows a variety of curved lines giving the piece an organic shape. Vincent van Gogh applied to his painting a rough texture by heavy brushstroke technique impasto. The painting is created in a 3 dimensional form so that if you look at the bottom of the painting you can see the houses look as if they were a very great distance away. The painting provides us with a shallow space because of the space we perceive due to the landscape of the painting. The painting has an asymmetrical balance to it because of the variety it has with its shapes, size, and colors in the painting. The painting provides us with repetition due to the strokes of the paint brush that Vincent van Gogh performed on the piece. Vincent van Gogh provides us with a rhythm within the sky, the stars are repeating creating that rhythm within the work of art. Un Dimanche Apres Midi a l'ile de la grande Jatte is a french sentence for A Sunday afternoon on the island of the big river. This painting is also known to be a very big one,10ft wide by 7ft tall, almost the size of a minivan. The size of the painting justifies why it took Seurat from 1884 until 1886 to finish it. The painting was located in the Art Institute of Chicago from 1926 until 1958. Seurat came up with this idea in 1884, after her rejected and rebelled from impression. He was interested in dividing colors into its basic forms; For example, if an artist wanted to mix red and blue together to get a purple color, they wouldn't get the perfect shade that exists in real life. This is because the origin of the red color has many shades and the same goes for the blue color. Therefor, mixing them together will not result in a natural and luminous color. On the other hand, the solution to this was to take a blue color and a red color and place them closely next to each other without mixing them. In this case, as the light is being received by your eye, the light waves are doing the mixing for themselves. This is where the color theory is included and manipulated by George Seurat into a technique used in painting. Other famous artists that applied this technique in their paintings include, Paul Signac in his painting The Town Beach (1887) , Camille Pissarro in his Self–Portrait (1903) and Henri Matisse in his painting Calme Et Volupte (1904– 1905). ... The artwork is derived from the European culture focusing on the style of neo–impressionism or pointillism. The painting is made with the use of oil on canvas and currently located inside the Dallas Museum of Art in second floor in the section of European art. It depicts a lively image of farmers engaging in their daily activities where they are picking apples on a sunny day. The background of the landscape consists of a huge ranch with additional apple trees that gives a vibration of harvesting season. Similarly, it is a form of a representational artwork portraying physical labor by the farmers during that period. Camille Pissarro seemed to support the farmers of low social status and believed in hard work as some of his artworks are the representations of lives of these social groups (Dallas Museum of Art 2017). In the painting "Apple Harvest", he tries to picture working peasants in an apple farm in the French Countryside (Dallas Museum of Art 2017). It was established in 1879 and has since expanded its collection to approximately three hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason I chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person because it is so iconic. While at the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my time in "The Elizabeth Hammond Stickney Gallery". There were three pieces in this gallery: Saint Michael and the Devil, The Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and Saint George Killing the Dragon. Each piece was made in the Renaissance period in Europe in the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. I believe the main reason these pieces are grouped together is that they all contain a depiction of a saint. Another reason for this arrangement is that all these paintings all represent the survival of holy figures and the death of the evil ones. This is shown in each piece by either a saint killing an evil creature or the birth of a holy saint. The piece I will analyze from the previously mentioned gallery is Saint George Killing the Dragon by Bernat Martorell which was made in 1434/35. This piece is a painting made on a support of panel with a media of tempera and stucco. The main subject of the painting is a man wearing armor on a white horse. The man on the ... Today, we will be delving into the topic of post–impressionism, and specifically on Vincent Van Gogh. Beginning slide (Slide: Jewel) What is the context of the art movement? (Tricia, Slide: Tricia) Post–impressionism, which was primarily a French art movement, developed approximately between 1886 and 1905. Subdivisions of Post–impressionism include Divisionism and Pointillism, which involves using dots and patches of color to form a picture. Due to these characteristics, post–impressionism ushered in a new era of painting, and paved the way for many future art movements such as fauvism and cubism. Its antecedent being Impressionism, post–impressionism contains traces of elements from that movement, but has its own diverging styles too. Les Grands Boulevard And La Grande Jatte Through my analysis and comparison of Les Grands Boulevard and La Grande Jatte I hope to convey to the reader that these two paintings, although painted in different styles, both illustrate the need to slow down and enjoy life. Les Grands Boulevards is a 20 1/2 x 25in. European oil on canvas painting created by Pierre–Auguste Renoir in 1875 during the impressionism movement ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). The painting is currently housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is another European oil on canvas painting. Georges Seurat started this painting in 1884 during the post impressionism movement and completed it in 1886 ( "About This Artwork."). In 1889 Seurat made one final change to La Grande Jatte, restretching the canvas to 81 3/4 x 121 1/4in in order to add a painted border ( "About This Artwork."). The painting is now located at the Art Institute of Chicago ( "About This Artwork."). Renoir's use of blurred details, blended colors and optical effect of light and color in Les Grands Boulevard show a fleeting moment of contemporary life in Paris in 1875.The painting depicts one of the so called grands boulevard of Paris. Brought about by the industrial revolution, the boulevard was a newly restored and modernized urban setting at the time Renoir painted it. • 32. George Seurat Research Paper A Sunday Afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte George Seurat, father of pointillism painting technique was born on December 2, 1859 and died in his early age of 31 on March 29,1891. The full name of the artist is Georges Pierre Seurat and he was trained at the Г‰cole des Beaux–Arts, where he stepped out of the traditional way of painting and invented his own way of painting through scientific technique of mixing colors. His techniques were beyond the styles of Impressionism, which was the most acquired art technique of that age. After his birth on December 2, 1859, in Paris, France, his father was a customs official, he was not at home that often which led Seurat, his brother and his sister to grow up with their mother Faivre. He learned arts in his early age from an uncle and started formal education at the age of 16 from a local art school. He studied in the famous Ecole des Beaux–Arts in Paris starting from 1878 for a year, he trained under artist Henri Lehmann and since the rules and the regulations of the school were strict, Seurat was frustrated and decided to leave school. This would be followed by viewing those colors from a distance provided the idea of optical mixing, meaning the colors would look like some other color when mixed and viewed from a distance. • 33. The And The Coronation Of The Emperor And Madame Seurat 's... The role of colour in paintings had a major change with the advent of Post Impressionism. Colour changed from the traditional Neo–classicists methods to artists such as Seurat the Post–impressionist artist who was obsessed with the science behind art. . The main concepts I am discussing in terms of how the role of colour has changed are: the traditional role of colour, what made artists change their focus, science discoveries about light, optics and the difference between the colour use in the two styles; Neoclassicism and Post– Impressionism. Using Wolfflins model of interpretation I will compare the two uses of colour in Jacques Lois David's "The Coronation of the Emperor and Empress" and Georges Seurat's "The Circus". In Neoclassical painting the role of colour wasn't as important as the focus was more on the structure, form and composition of the painting. Many paintings at the time were used to represent or record an event accurately. David was one of the leading French Neoclassical artists at the time. He became Napoleon's first hand painter and was commissioned to capture many scenes during the French Revolution. David was classically trained at the Academy and became an important figure in the canon of art. The main difference between the two art styles is the Neoclassical paintings mixed their paint on a palette to get the blended colour they wanted whilst the Post Impressionists used the science of optics to blend the colour in the viewers' eye. • 34. Paul Signac's Breakfast In The Dining Room Paul Signac was a French painter who helped develop the pointillist style. He was born on November 11, 1863 in Paris, France where he began his artistic career. He decided he wanted to become an artist after viewing an exhibition of Monet's work in 1880. His family were wealthy shopkeepers and encouraged him to study architecture, however, his early interest in painting continued into adulthood. His father and grandpa were both saddlemakers, but the store was still under his name. During the Franco–Prussian War, he was sent to northern France to live with his grandmother because his family didn't want him to get into harm's way. Since Signac had to stay there for the time being, he was enrolled in a college named Rollin in Montmartre. Soon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These two artists shared an interest for science behind color and perception, so Signac worked with Seurat to create a painting style that used optical effects. (Paul Signac) They applied small dabs of colors closely together on canvas, using various shades that appeared to merge from a distance. Using pointillism, Signac created two paintings that became very popular, one of which, was called "Breakfast in the Dining Room" (Meyer). This painting was actually based on his own family, and it featured his mother, grandfather and housekeeper. The figures present at the lunch table appear to be in silence. It portrays a family that lacks interaction and a feeling of home. Signac's style was very similar to his good friend, Georges Seurat. For example, Signac's oil painting "Breakfast in the Dining Room" appears to look like Seurat's "Sunday in the Park on the Island of Grande Jatte".(Jackson) Signac based this pinwheel design on a Japanese print, but replaced it with his own colors and patterns to represent himself. Till this day, it is still a mystery as to why Signac drew this, but it is rumored that both Seurat and Signac worked on each others projects hand in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Painting: Vincent Van Gogh, Bedroom in Arles Essay Van Gogh and The Representation of Happiness Through His Own Bedroom Vincent Van Gogh, Bedroom in Arles, 1889, Oil on canvas, currently at the De Young Museum (San Francisco), "Van Gogh, Gauguin, CГ©zanne and Beyond: Post–Impressionist Masterpieces from the MusГ©e d'Orsay"Exhibition. On a smaller canvas than two other similar paintings, Vincent Van Goghcarefully painted for the third time his bedroom in Arles, a charming town in the south of France, and thus created this approximately 22 ВЅ x 29'' artwork. In fact, Van Gogh made three almost identical paintings on the theme of his bedroom and are named В« Bedroom in Arles В». Perhaps he had come to Arles for the sun and for him, it was an immense joy to live in such bright bedroom, bursting with colors. What is also fascinating about this piece of art is how the painter highlights the simplicity of his bedroom through the medium of color: В« the pale lilac walls, the floor of an old brown, the chairs and bed chrome yellow, the blood red cover, the orange little table and the blue basin", as the painter describes it. Van Gogh asserted that he wanted to express a complete rest by handling all these different shades2. The color black, which could be evocating a certain form of anguish, is almost nonexistent in this painting. Only the frame of the mirror and windows is black. We wonder if this could mean that Van Gogh was afraid of his future and afraid to face up to reality. This is a possibility. In fact, despite the evidence of his happiness, present in this painting, Van Gogh was not married2 and many clues here let us think that he wished to be. Although the bedroom is very sparsely furnished and only contains essential items (which shows, in addition to the choice of colors, a great simplicity), we notice that many of these objects go together in pairs (two pillows, two chairs, two portraits on the wall, two drawings, and even two doors). Thus, this painting on canvas was perhaps his way of expressing his wish to meet someone and that his bedroom was arranged so as to welcome her. But because it was just him in this bedroom, he certainly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Vincent Van Gogh Research Paper Vincent Willem van Gogh is considered as one of the most renowned artist/painter in history, but like many others, his legacy and talent was brought to light after his death. • 37. Summary Of A Sunday On La Grande Jatte By Georges Seurat "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte", depicting the accumulation of individuals on the island of the Grande Jatte, was painted by Georges Seurat from 1884 to 1886. To create this painting, Seurat utilized multiple pure pigments, a canvas, and a technique called Pointillism. Pointillism is a technique of applying dots of pure paint on canvas. Imagine glancing at a park that borders a body of water on the left, and growth of trees on the right. The foreground, in a shadow, contains animals along with males and females in various classes of society, based on the way they are dressed. It is important to note that in this region, the shadow is not a normal grey or black color associated with a shadow. Rather it is dark green and areas where shadow meets light are... The individuals in this region are wearing both warm and cool colors, invoking a sense of balance and calmness. For example, one of the men lying down is wearing an orange shirt, and one of the females is wearing a pink flower on her black hat. This woman wearing the pink flower on her hat also has a rather large buttock. It is evident Seurat uses form to accentuate this region of the body with curves in the fold lines of the fabric at the buttock region of the dress, along with straight fold lines from the bottom of the dress to the buttock. The middle ground consists of many individuals performing various activities, ranging from sailing to relaxing in the shade created by light failing to pass through the foliage of tall trees. One of the most noticeable individuals is a female fishing in the body of water while in the park. The background is similar to the composition of the middleground, except it has ... • 38. Audley Book Review Introduction Audley is a parish which has been fortunate with regard to historians. The antiquarians Richard Parrott and William Kelsall produced two invaluable 17th and early 18th century works. In the early 20th century Thomas Warham took a series of photographs that capture a forgotten parish. In the late 20th century both Runce and more notably Robert Speake produced indispensable reading and Speake followed this as the new millennium dawned with a second work while David Dyble published his work on Chesterton and Apedale, which encroaches into the parish. These works capture the essence of the parish as a whole but Audley is a large parish, in 1834 it was 11,000 acres and split into 7 townships. These townships represent a rich diversity of character, from the agricultural Eardley End to the industrial Bignall End. J.D. It was painted with oil paint on a canvas with the dimensions 81 Вѕ x 121 Вј in. It was made in the Impressionism movement and now resides in New York, NY at the Museum of Modern Art. The technique used to paint this is called pointillism. Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed this technique in 1886. "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" is depicting people enjoying a Sunday at a grassy park setting. There is a man relaxing and laying on the ground smoking a pipe with a red cut off shirt and a blue hat. Next to him is a man in a suit and a top hat sitting up. And between them and behind a little is a woman in a navy blue dress with a nice sun hat. The people in this painting all seem to be different in many ways. The clothing is the most obvious. Their clothes show the class difference amongst the people. There are people in suits and others in jeans. It's good to see people of all classes mixed together in one painting. There are plenty of animals too there is a solid black Great Dane type dog. Toward the middle of the piece is a woman with a red blouse and a pink skirt holding an umbrella and holding a little girl's hand. They seem to be mother and daughter. The little girl is in a white hat and dress. To the left and slightly behind them are two people sitting beside a tree both are women, one with an umbrella. Behind them are more people laying and a man looking to the right with a telescope. The man could possibly be trying to look at the people on the boats. There's a lovely couple with the man standing and the woman kissing his cheek. Everyone must be having a good time. The amount of color and slight and subtle detail put into the painting really gives it life and movement. There are two cute animals, a dog, maybe a beagle, and a cat. Next to them, a woman in a dark navy blue dress with a hat and an umbrella resting open on her shoulder. By her there's possibly a mother and daughter or sisters sitting together.
