First Things First, By Stephen R. Covey
Over the span of my life I have already set a variety of goals, some achieved, others not, but I will
continue to set daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals for the rest of my life and strive to achieve
as many as I can. Out of the many successful goals I have experienced, there are two that I have
achieved that stick out to me. The first occurred during the end of my sophomore year in high
school when I got the role of flute section leader in the Pride of the Vikings Marching Band. In
order to reach this particular goal, I had to attend section leader camp, which was every day after
school for one week in May. At camp we went over how to teach people how to march and how to
hold their instrument correctly. We also had to learn the correct ... Show more content on

Covey's suggestions about setting and achieving goals. In his life, Covey was an American author,
keynote speaker, and businessman. In chapter 7 of his self–help book titled "First Things First," he
discussed the four personal endowments and how they relate to the characteristics of effective goal
setting. The four personal endowments include, imagination, will, conscience, and self–awareness.
All of these are necessary for successful goals. Imagination helps you visualize your possibilities,
whereas your will is what pays the price. Your conscience is the deeper connection of your goal to
the mission. On the other hand, self–awareness means you know how much you can handle and
what you can do. Covey states that goal setting is a complex but powerful process. He suggests that
we set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, lifetime, organizational, personal, long–term, and short term
goals. According to Covey goals should be measurable, specific, and time–bound. My goals to be
assigned the role of flute section leader and to be accepted into the all–city honor band had those
three characteristics. They both were measureable, because I either became section leader, or I
didn't, and I either made it in the group, or not. Both were also specific and time–bound because
they had a timeline I had to follow, in detail, when my auditions and practices were. Covey also
explains the three vital questions in goal setting. The first is "What," which deals with what you
want to accomplish. This focuses on growth and contribution. While setting both of my music goals,
I was focused on growing as a musician, and contributing to my band to do my part to make fun and
emotional music. The second question is "Why," which is about why you want to achieve the goal.
This is the key to motivation and gives people the strength and energy to keep trying. My main
motivator was myself, and making

The Principles Centered Leadership By Stephen R. Covey
Introduction
Through careful, calculated progression Principle centered Leadership presents a plan that first
prepares the leader him or herself, then illustrates how to use that leadership to manage an
organization. Author Stephen R. Covey introduces the notion that we as individuals and
organizations need to not only survive but also to thrive in the faces of adversity, change and
success. Despite their efforts to improve, countless companies continue to fail all the while spending
millions of dollars, time and effort every year. Reversing this requires the full measure of
individuals' creativity, talent, and energy in the midst of this changing adversity. At the fundamental
root of this success is balance; balance in our personal life, family life, and professional life, which
is discussed in great detail throughout the text.
What Covey offers is principle–centered leadership: a long–term, intrinsic approach to developing
people and organizations. The key to dealing with today's challenges is the integration and
employment of a principle–centered core within each individual as well as within an organization.
Covey offers insights and guidelines that demonstrate how these principles can be applied both at
work and at home which lead to an increase in our productivity and the quality of our work. It also
leads individuals to a new appreciation of the importance of establishing more personal and
professional relationships as they strive to enjoy a balanced, rewarding

The Habits Of Authentic Leadership
Habits of Authentic Leadership
Stephen R. Covey has authored numerous leadership and personal growth books. This paper focuses
on the book titled "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and its relation to the theory of
authentic leadership as well as its application to nursing practice. All seven of the habits are
valuable to nursing practice, enabling nurses to become more effective leaders and care providers.
The habits applying to authentic leadership principles that will be discussed are begin with the end
in mind, think win–win, synergize, and finally, sharpen the saw.
Authentic Leadership Authentic leadership is a modern leadership theory that is emerging with the
concept that in order to lead, leaders must be true to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Relationships are built and connections are established with others in order to strengthen the human
bond (Shirey, 2006). Authentic leaders display self–discipline by establishing a balance among their
personal and professional lives (Shirey, 2006). These characteristics apply to the following habits of
effective people and can also be incorporated into nursing practice.
Begin With the End in Mind
One habit discussed in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is "Begin with the end in
mind", which is based on the concept of beginning every day and every task with a clear vision of
the desired goals and direction while being proactive to make these happen. This habit is grounded
on the ability to envision the future and define one's personal, moral, and ethical guidelines which
contribute to the attainment of the desired outcomes or destination (Covey, 2004).
This concept aligns with the characteristics of purpose and value in an authentic leader. Having this
clear vision and drive to achieve outcomes is also an important in a quality nurse. Each nurse
possesses their own personal, moral, and ethical frameworks and these direct how nurses will
achieve their goals and which outcomes they desire. The ability to have a precise view of what one
wants to accomplish would allow a nurse to follow his/her dreams and passions to achieve what
they truly desire in the flexible field of

Conflict Resolution By Stephen R. Covey
Conflict Resolution To win or not to win, that is the question...or is it? Stephen R. Covey suggests
that it does not have to be a win–lose scenario. Covey subscribes to a win–win philosophy, "Win–
win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions"
(Covey, n.d.). When it comes to parent–teacher conflicts, Covey's "Win–win" approach is the best
solution to deescalate frustrations and maintain positive relationships between the teacher, students,
and parents. This paper will examine two conflict scenarios and determine which actions achieved a
mutual beneficial outcome. In the first parent–teacher conflict scenario, a mother storms into her
son's classroom and demands if the teacher there is the one she is looking for. After his affirmation,
she begins to vent her frustrations about an assignment that made her child bring a homeless man
into her home. It is not long before the teacher cuts the parent off and condescendingly informs her
he has no idea what she is talking about or who she is. As the mother angrily tells him it is about an
assignment he gave her child, the teacher immediately jumps to the defensive. The teacher berates
her communication with her child, uses sarcasm when explaining the assignment he gave out and
the intent behind it, and made it known that he was not taking her concerns seriously as he
suggested she put her complaints in a suggestion box. There were no win–win resolutions made in

Personal Learning Plan
Personal Learning Plan
The author has designed the personal learning plan around the diagnosis of his learning needs,
statement of specific learning objectives, learning resources and strategies, evidence of
accomplishment, how the evidence will be validated, and how the learning will be evaluated. I will
concentrate on the five disciplines: Systems Thinking, Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared
Visions, and Team Learning introduced by Peter M. Senge. This will allow me to expand my
leadership abilities at my current job as well as jobs that I may hold in the future. What distinguishes
leaders is the clarity and persuasiveness of their ideas, the depth of their commitment, and the extent
of their openness to continually learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Statement of Specific Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the personal learning plan I want to demonstrate mastery with my team
learning and mental model aspects. With team learning I want to create sincerity and
professionalism. Using improved discipline to accept criticism and disagreement by using dialogue
to come up with the best solution to the situation. Concerning mental models I want to be better
prepared to accept people for who they are, instead of referencing influences from my past.
Learning Resources and Strategies
I will use the following Resources to go about accomplishing each objective. To increase my
effectiveness in team learning, I can begin with reading and getting a better understanding of The 7
Habits of Highly Effective People written by Stephen Covey. For example, in the fifth habit, Covey
considers ways for effective communication. Coveys fifth habit concentrates on seeking first to
understand, but in today's world, people expect to be understood first instead. It seems the majority
of people have a reply before even giving a thought to understanding what is being said. To be an
effective leader in team learning I must get into my employees frame of mind and think as they are
thinking, this is called empathic listening. A strategy that I will enact to improve my team learning
weakness, will be to use smaller, more diverse groups. This

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People
After reading both Stephen R. Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and John C
Maxwell's book "The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader" I can say both of them presented very
effective reading tools that shows you ways to improve your overall daily life. The way Stephen
Covey accomplished this was by proving us, which is in the title itself, the seven habits which are
based on principles. After you learn and develop these principles, they bring long term benefits just
like John C Maxwell's Qualities do as well. The way John C Maxwell accomplishes this is by
proving us a list of the top qualities he thought every leader needed and with those top qualities, he
explained in every chapter separately, in a simple easy to read step by step guide of how to
recognize, grow, and learn every quality in each chapter. John C Maxwell's book and Stephen R.
Covey's both encourage us to embody these qualities or principles to help better ourselves and
improve all overall daily life. Here are some ways that the two books The 7 habits of Highly
Effective People and The 21 Qualities of a Leader comes together. The first place that the two books
come together is Habit1, Principles of Personal Vision and the quality Vision. In Habit 1 Covey
explains "until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be
unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world." Covey also
explains "In addition to self–awareness, we have

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People Essay
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Summary The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a best
selling book by Stephen R. Covey. The book has become a management tool for many companies.
Covey wrote the book after reviewing literature on success from the last two centuries. Covey
discovered that as he reviewed the literature on success, that the most current literature was based
mainly on success based on having the "right" personality traits. Covey calls this the "Personality
Ethic". The Personality Ethic focuses more on success being a product of personality traits and
maintaining a positive attitude. The author stresses that people need to go back to the "Character
Ethic" which is based on what Covey calls "natural laws" that have always existed. The Character
Ethic focuses on principles such as fairness, integrity, honesty, human dignity, service and quality.
Covey wants people to examine their way of thinking from the "inside out" to see if we are applying
the Personality Ethic or the Character Ethic. The Seven Habits Covey explains that habits are
"powerful factors in our lives" and he defines habits as "the intersection of knowledge, skill, and
desire". (Covey, pg 46–47). Effective habits are defined as internalized principles and patterns of
behavior. The Seven Habits that Covey tells the reader about are in harmony with natural laws and
therefore, in harmony with the Character Ethic. On the paradigm that Covey has presented to the
reader, the bottom

Steven Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Essay
Steven Covey's The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
In the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey, lessons for personal
change are presented in a very powerful and understandable way. The Habits can be applied to our
own lives, our leadership of other people, a school or any other organization that can be run more
effectively. However, before an application of these Habits can be made, a basic understanding of
the material presented in the book must be obtained. Comparison with other leadership styles and
theories can also clarify and reinforce this understanding as well. Finally, application can be made to
a particular setting, a school.

Investment and conviction contribute to a person's character. If we are to move from our present
state toward a more principle–centered life there has to be a paradigm shift. A paradigm shift is a
change in how we currently perceive reality by becoming more open, aware, and committed to
improvement and seeing more clearly. In accomplishing this shift to become more effective, Covey
presents seven habits that serve to bring about change.
Habit 1 is Be Proactive. This means that we need to accept the reality that we have the power to
choose how we respond to the circumstances in our lives. We are ultimately responsible for our own
lives, our actions, and our attitudes. By choosing to respond positively to events in our lives by
creatively using our resources and initiative, we become proactive. If we are to truly become
effective we must also come to realize that there are things we can control and things we cannot.
Covey calls this our Circle of Concern vs. our Circle of Influence. Our time and energy needs to be
focused on our Circle of Influence, those things that we can control or have influence on rather than
our entire Circle of Concern, those things we are concerned about. Often times our Circle of
Concern is larger than our Circle of Influence and therein

Toxic Emotions At Work : How Compassionate Managers Handle...
Reading "Toxic Emotions at Work: How Compassionate Managers Handle Pain and Conflict", by
Peter J. Frost. When leadership positions, such as managers and supervisors, take corrective
measures it can become a very toxic environment in the workplace. There is help to alleviate this
type of the employee emotion. Leadership must be compassionate to the needs of their employees,
when handling a very difficult situation. This type of emotional pain felt by the employee can result
in decreased productivity and a lower quality of work. Leadership needs to be proactive to ease this
toxic emotion. When leadership is compassionate they truly promote a healthy productive
environment for their employees. "The One Minute Manager", by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer
Johnson. The main reading theme is managers should reflect a compassionate behavior to his/her
employees. They also need to be open with them about their expectations. "This document theme
seems to be based on two underlying premises: one quality of theme spent with subordinates as with
one 's children more important than quality and to in the end, people subordinates should really be
managing themselves" (Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson, 1981, page 270). The reading
states that managers and employees can both benefit with this type of behavior. To have a successful
organization managers must clarify company goals and employee responsibilities as it relates to
their performance standards. The authors believe that

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R....
The first habit listed by Stephen R. Covey, is to be proactive. He breaks down the word to create a
simple reference, "response–able" means understanding that you are accountable for your life. Your
behaviors are determined by you. Viktor Frankl was placed into a Jewish concentration camp during
WWII; he endured great misfortune during this period of his life. To cope with the experience he
envisioned himself simply watching the catastrophic torture he would endure in an out–of–body
type of experience. He discovered, "between stimulus and response, man was free to choose," by
this he meant he could escape the torture by realizing that he was in control of his own behaviors,
not in his physical state but his mental state. By having control of himself he did not fall prey to
reactive tendencies. The referenced statement would be considered false; Covey believes that people
are responsible for their own actions and behaviors. To rebound the blame is merely what he refers
to as a reactive person that uses their physical environment to dismiss their own irresponsible
behaviors. In doing this the person essentially becomes part of the problem, instead of the solution.
This statement would also fall into the "circle of concern" as it refers to the actions of how others
are impacting your life. This area is how reactive individuals may choose to let people affect their
life. Leadership and management as explained by Covey are quite different. The meaning of
leadership is the

Stephen R. Covey first wrote the self–help book entitled, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,
this book has since opened the eyes and hearts to millions of people throughout the world. After
discovering the success that so many individuals encountered and still encountering, Dr. Covey
decided to write the sequel entitled, The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness. This habit is
explained as, "Finding your voice, your calling, your soul's code and inspire others to do the same."
What does that mean exactly and how would one implement that particular habit into the business
world? It is simple really, that is if you know what it is that you are working towards, having an end

The 8th habit focuses on one's inner core, aspirations and desires, and one's reason for living, one's
purpose. While one achieves their own voice or calling, one should believe in and encourage others
to do the same for themselves. Understanding that not every person has traveled the same, maybe
not even a similar, path that has been journeyed more often. During the research process I
discovered a DVD in a sleeve in the 8th habit book. This DVD contained multiple videos supporting
the belief and practice of the 8th habit. One of the videos that I viewed was entitled "Mauritius",
Mauritius is an island nation off the southeast coast of Africa. This particular nation runs the
government quite well, in my opinion. It is the countries common belief and daily practice that, "It
takes a world of difference to make a difference in the world." This country has multiple forms of
religious practices and beliefs, but yet, these different people coexist without major turmoil and
animosity. They do this simply by knowing their common purpose, and abiding by a strong set of
principles. Which in–turn, any effective leader, in any setting, would poses, actively practice, and
encourage these same behaviors.
Stephen R. Covey, then later, explains the nature of leadership today as, "The more you can get
people committed to a common vision, a common purpose, and a set of principles that they already
have inside of them. Then the

Building Trust In Your Leadership Among Your Subordinates:...
"The glue that holds all relationships together – including the relationship between; the leader and
the led is trust, and trust is based on integrity." This wise statement from Brian Tracey embodies the
synergistic relationship between leaders and followers that this paper will focus on. According to the
course textbook, leadership can be defined as "the process of influencing an organized group toward
accomplishing its goals." (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, 2009, p.4) Although this statement is valid, it
is my firm belief that it is a leader's responsibility to do make a positive impact in a subordinate's
life. This paper will discuss why building trust is important in creating a team, how to build trust

In pursuit of such, I make sure to lead my life with a mindset of positivity – portrayed through no
short cuts, no do–overs, and no room for excuses.
Building trust in a team is important for reasons other than just having a positive work environment.
If trust is not instilled in a team, serious consequences such as death may occur. Military leadership
differs from that of the civilian world because in the military, people's lives are on the line. This is a
sharp but brutal reality when compared to civilian leadership. The main motivation and concern for
civilians is profit for their business. For the Navy, our business is protecting our freedom. Therefore,
our most valuable asset to our business is our people, not turning a profit. As a perspective Naval
Aviator, building trust among subordinates is applicable to my life over the next several years. An
example of how serious consequences can occur when trust is not instilled in a team can be seen
through the aviation community. If a pilot were to fall into a managerial derailment rut, the team and
the leader may suffer. Managerial derailment results from four enduring themes; the first of which is
the inability to build relationships with co–workers. The second is failure to meet business
objectives, followed by an inability to build and lead a team. Finally, the inability to adapt to new
situations can crucially cripple a leader.

He then spent two years setting up a formal, independent bank to do just that. On Oct. 2, 1983,
Grameen Bank was created. Grameen Bank now works in more than 46,000 villages in Bangladesh,
has 1,267 branches and more than 12,000 staff members, and has lent more than $4.5 billion, in
loans of $12 to $15. A housing loan is $300. At the heart of this empowerment are individuals who
chose to become selfreliant, independent entrepreneurs producing goods out of their own homes or
neighborhoods to become economically viable and successful. They found their voices. The carrot–

bureaucracies to drive "getting the numbers" – a reactive process that produces "kiss–up" cultures
bent on "spending so we won't lose it next year." As people consent to be controlled like things, their
passivity only fuels leaders' urge to direct and manage. There's a simple connection between the
controlling, Industrial Age, "thing" paradigm that dominates today's workplace and the inability of
managers and organizations to inspire people's best contributions in the Knowledge Worker Age:
People choose how much of themselves to give to their work, depending on how they're treated.

Whole Life
Introduction In creating a whole life concept for myself as I become an engineer was a little
overwhelming for me at first. Reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People By Stephen R.
Covey, really helped me to better understand what a whole life concept was and how to apply it to
daily life. In Habit 1 Be Proactive I was introduced to the concentric circles model as seen Fig.1.
Starting out with the circle of concern which includes worries fears such as national debt, nuclear
war, health, personal relationships and problems at work. Outside of my circle of concern are the
things that I do not have any involvement in. Inside my circle of concern there are things that I have
no real control of, also there are things I can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He breaks down priorities into the quadrants shown in table 1. The best way to mange your time
would be staying in quadrant II. By staying in quadrant II you will spend less time in I, and have
more time for III and IV. As an engineer developing great time management skills is a must. By
staying in quadrant II you will build the relationships need to move forward, and open more doors
for the future. Also this will free up more time for those projects that have a deadline and require
long hours. Habit 4 Win/Win Win/Win is a character–based code where all parties involved gain
something. Win/Win does not show life as a competition where someone loses. Also Covey says
that if a mutual benefit can't be found then no deal, agree to disagree agreeably. In today's world I
believe Win/Win should be applied with the environment in mind especially with nature resources
decreasing. Design products that can be easily recycled or having longer lifespans would help
reduce our carbon foot print. Habit 5 Seek First to Understand, Then to be understood
Communication is one of the most important life skills. In Habit 5 Covey tells us that listening is the
most important part of communication. Covey also describes empathic listening, listening with
intent to understand the other person's frame of reference and feelings. After understanding come

A2. Scholarly Leadership Theory Servant leadership has been around for thousands of years.
Though more notably within religious context, the subject of servant leadership and the traits
associated with success have blossomed greatly since the 1970's when Robert Greenleaf published
his insights on the subject. Greenleaf expresses how servant leaders exist in many areas, including
business. Servant leadership, unlike transactional, is focused on serving the individual needs of
others before the needs of the organization. The theory is that organizations will function at higher
levels when the personal needs of others are being met. Greenleaf also suggests, "The servant leader
is a servant first" (Greenleaf, 1977/2002, "The Servant as Leader section, Who Is the Servant–
Leader?" para. 1). Evaluating my own management abilities and research in leadership, I have taken
great interest in the servant leadership theory. A few of my greatest leadership strengths and
weaknesses are related to my strong desire to see the growth and success of others. Robert K.

Habits Of Highly Effective People By Stephen R. Covey
Summary of Main Points in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
This book on 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was written in 1989, is still a great book today.
Stephen R. Covey talked about great habits that we need to encrypt in our daily living to be effective
at work, home and as a person. He explained how the habits is based on developing our
independence. The first habit he talked about was being proactive in our lives. To be proactive we
need to have self–awareness of our actions. We need to take responsibility for the choices we make
and take responsible for those choices.
Second habit is to begin with the end in mind. This is where you develop a vision of what you want
to become and our conscience will decide what values will guide you and everything that you do
should have an end.
Third habit is to put first things first. This is where we need to have discipline to our day so we
make sure that we focus on what is the most important to the least important. This is where our will
power will come into effect so we don't act on our desires or impulses.
Habit four is the win–win thought process. To be successful you need to look at the problem
between you and the other party and approach it with a mutual solution. To do this it requires
understanding and being understood. This way everyone can be satisfied with the outcome of the
solution.
The fifth habit was, seek first to understand them to understood. One important skill that we need to

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey
In the self–improvement book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen R. Covey
presents an integrated and principle–centered approach for solving personal and professional issues
and problems. Covey uses real life examples as well as his own experience to reveal a step–by–step
way for living with integrity, honesty, and self–respect. In the book he explains principles that give
someone the comfort to adapt to change and the wisdom to take control and full advantage of the
opportunities that the business world and personal lives create. This book seems very useful and I
found a few habits that I plan to adopt and work at including in my everyday life. They are basic
things in everyday life that can make things easier, more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He goes on to explain that effective, proactive people spend most of their time in Quadrant II. To
accomplish this I would take his advice and try to organize my week on Sundays and try to delegate
responsibility with goals in mind not set ways that they have to be done. For the interdependence
section, the idea of making "emotional deposits" as often as possible will allow one to feel better
and work more efficiently with everyone's needs in mind.
The major "emotional deposits" Covey talks about are; understanding the individual, attending to
little things, keeping commitments, clarifying expectations, and showing personal integrity. With the
help of these habits I feel like I could improve myself. Understanding someone is very important in
everyday activities and especially in business situations. You need to understand who your
consumer is as well as whom your co–workers are. When you understand them on a deeper level
you can relate better and be more productive. Something I've always believed in is the attention to
little things matter most. It shows people that you do care and pay attention. This ties in well with
keeping commitments because that is something that is not always a big deal but can mean a lot to
people.

7 Habits Of Highly Effective People By Stephen R. Covey
In the book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey he explains how the world
is entirely based on our own perception. In order to change a situation, we must change ourselves,
and in order to change ourselves we have to change our perception. These days, individuals look for
quick solutions. They see successful people, companies, and organizations that have achieved
success and wonder how they can get a hold of their techniques. The problem is these shortcuts that
we all look for, hoping to save time and energy and still received the desired result, isn't... "The way
we see the problem is the problem" (pg. ) As individual we have to allow ourselves to experience a
change in how we think. Covey explains how we must altar our attitude and behavior in order to
achieve true change through the seven habits. Habit 1: Principles of Personal Vision Throughout this
habit we are reminded what it means to be responsible for ourselves. We learn to take initiative,
choosing our attitude, and always doing the right thing even when no one is looking. We know as
individual that we can easily give up on a situation or relationship if it is too hard or not going the
way you want, but Covey reminds us that we choose the script for our lives. Do not give up but use
self–awareness to be proactive and take reasonability for our choices. What distinguishes us as
humans is our ability to examine our own character, to decide how to view ourselves and our
situations, and control

Essay on 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People
Stephen R. Covey's self–help book is an influential communication for personal change. He advises
building from the inside–out and offers a plan for moving from dependence to independence and
then to interdependence. The inside–out approach starts first with one self, which includes
paradigms, characters, and motivations. To improve relationships with others, we have to first
improve ourselves by putting character ahead of personality. Covey prefaces the book by explaining
paradigms and principles. Paradigms are maps that guide us and affect the way we interact with
people. He states, "We see the world not as it is, but as we are or as we are conditioned to see it"
(page 28). Paradigms have a greater impact over effectiveness than any ... Show more content on

Covey states that effectiveness is based on a principle he called the P/PC balance. This P/PC balance
principle lies in the balance of production of desired results to the production capabilities. The PC
principle is to "always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers"
(page 58). Covey states that the P/PC balance is the essence of effectiveness: "It's the definition and
paradigm of effectiveness upon which the seven habits in this book are based" (page 58). Covey
calls those things that we have no control over the circle of concern. Those that we can control fall
into the circle of influence. He describes three areas that problems fall into. They are direct control,
indirect control and no control. Direct control problems involve our own behavior. There are
addressed in the three habits. Covey explains that private victories precede public victories. Private
victories are solving problems by working on our own habits. Indirect control problems are solved
by changing our methods. Public victories are discussed in Habits 4, 5 & 6 and involve learning new
methods of influence. No control problems are those that we can do nothing about but accept them
so that "we do not empower these problems to control us" (page 86). It is how we change our habits,
methods and

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Stephen Covey authored the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, to offer his expert,
professional, and personal insight of seven habits, or traits, exhibited by effective people. While
outlining the seven habits, he emphasizes that each previous habit is the building block for the next.
He also shows how all the habits are tied together to effectively transition through the growth stages
of dependence to independence to interdependence to become an effective person.
The Habits
Covey explains that the following seven habits are exhibited by effective people.

As people, we mostly listen to a person with intent to answer. We do not emphatically listen to the
other person and try to really understand what they are feeling and what their viewpoint is. If we
begin to truly understand people when we are engaged in a conversation, they will notice this and
begin to open up even more.
Habit 6: Synergize
Synergy, by definition, is when the whole is greater than the sum of the parts (Merriam – Webster
1997). To synergize is to work closely and cooperate with others to find a creative, non–
compromising solution that is equally beneficial to all parties. This is very closely related to the
"think win/win" habit. When you communicate synergistically, you are opening your eyes, heart,
and mind to new options, ideas, and thoughts. By doing so, you will foster win/win situations, as
well as, satisfy habit two, "begin with the end in mind," because the end is a win/win situation.
By employing habits four through six, Covey says public victory will have been achieved and the
paradigm shift from independence to interdependence will have been made. However, there is one
last habit to employ: habit seven, "sharpen the saw."
Habit 7: Sharpen The Saw
To "sharpen the saw" is referring to keeping yourself sharp. In other words, you are the saw. It is a
cycle of renewal to become better, keener, and more effective. In order to accomplish this, Covey
breaks the cycle of renewal down into four dimensions: Physical, Mental, Social/Emotional, and

Stephen R. Covey 's Contents Of A Dead Man 's Pockets
Stephen R. Covey said, "Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on
what is important." In today's society, many people put work and career pursuits at the top of their
metaphorical list of priorities. In a world driven a million miles an hour by commercial success, it is
a wonder anyone has time to "stop and smell the roses" with the people they care about. In
"Contents of a Dead Man's Pockets", Jack Finney expresses the importance of enjoying life rather
than chasing fruitless ambition through extensive symbolism and a touch of satire. At the beginning
of the story, as main character Tom Benecke is organizing papers on his desk, he remarks on how
hot it is in his apartment – showing that he feels stifled and ... Show more content on

He decides that there is nothing long enough in the apartment. As has been established, the
apartment here symbolizes Tom's enjoyable elements of life, so this decision represents Finney's
idea that one cannot focus on ambition and work without leaving behind the nice things in life.
Tom's reflection shortly thereafter on all of the time spent on his project emphasizes the colossal
waste of his life that his ambitions are. Finney says about these side projects, "They were the way to
change from a name on a payroll to a name in the minds of the company officials. They were the
beginning of the long, long climb to where he was determined to be, at the very top," and goes on to
say, "And he knew he was going out there in the darkness, after the yellow sheet fifteen feet beyond
his reach." These statements establish the connection between the darkness and his project
(representing ambition as a whole) for the first time. Tom Benecke decides to go out and chase his
ambitions by walking along the ledge on the building. Jack Finney proceeds to set up his satirical
scramble for power. Tom climbs out the window and is struck by the shift from the warmth and
comfort of his home to the cold, harsh outdoors. Tom Benecke begins to grow scared and
uncomfortable perched there in the dark. He stays calm and retrieves the page, but panics as he
looks down. He moves back towards the window, slowly

from to simulate his mind to develop a new approach of cultivating leadership concepts in a way
that has never been done before. He acknowledged these people and sources in the
acknowledgement section of his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 1989).
Dr. Covey displayed integrity (source here) by recognizing the thoughts and ideas of others and
shows he was not susceptible to common "ethical traps" such as "worry over image" or "drive for
success" (LM01, 2012). Dr. Covey's extensive research helped him better understand leadership
principles and how they are used and interpreted by people with different values, beliefs and
mindsets. This was the foundation for his ideas and giving credit to the sources of his foundation

I have not been completely certain of how I wanted my life to be but now, at 33, I do not what I

to focus on developing myself in order to reach my desired goals. Creating a plan that begins with
the end in mind is definitely something I 'm starting immediately since reading this book. Habit 3:
Put First Things First This habit is about prioritizing, planning, and executing a week 's tasks based
on importance rather than urgency. It requires that I evaluate whether or not my efforts exemplify
my desired character values, propel me towards my goals, and enrich the roles and relationships
discussed in Habit 2. I know for certainty that this is a habit I desperately need to acquire because
mostly everything that I do is based on urgency. I always feel like I 'm working with unreasonable
deadlines. I know that I 'll be more effective and productive once I 've been able to prioritize my
tasks based on importance rather than urgency. Habit 4: Think Win–Win This habit, along with the
next two, deals with interdependence. This habit deals with genuinely striving for mutually
beneficial solutions or agreements in my relationships. Valuing and respecting others by
understanding that a "win" for all is a better long–term outcome than if only one person in the
situation had gotten his or her way. This is definitely a habit I already have. I know what it

Comparison Between R And Python
Chapter 3
Today, R and Python are the most popular open tools for Machine Learning. This Chapter presents a
general overview of R and Python, their characteristics and usage for machine learning. Lastly, a
comparison matrix of R and Python for ML is provided at the end of this chapter.
About R
R stands for both the statistical programming language and the software environment. It is one of
the most popular statistical environment for machine learning and general data analysis. R is
licensed under the GNU General Public License, with copyright held by The R Foundation for
Statistical Computing.
The source code of R is written in R, C and Fortran. R is free, open source and cross platform with a
large community of users. Even though R programming is challenging, the CRAN packages reduce
the number of lines coding, with a help command giving explanation and examples of use. R also
gained popularity for its fancy visualizations.

and depends on the user's preference and personal experience. Python is a great solution if the user
wants to learn a powerful programming language for not only machine learning and statistics.
Besides, if the user is already familiar with python or with a similar programming language, Python
seems a natural choice. Python is more flexible and gives the freedom of development. R on the
other hand, is more suitable if the user is specifically interested in statistical computations and
visualizations. For non–programmers, R can be very exciting; the user can easily do data
explorations and create some amazing plots with little effort. Many tutorials and books are available
for beginners, and the community is always welcoming new R users. Still, mastering R

In one's life everyone wants to become a leader in at least one activity. There is some strange feeling

This was an example on why I personally believe that self–esteem plays a big role in being
effective, because this exact situation happened to me this year in my math class. Therefore, that is
why I completely agree with Downing about self–esteem and that it plays a big role in being
effective. During On Course by Skip Downing and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by
Stephen Covey they talk about many different ways one can interact with other human beings. In
my opinion, the best way to communicate with other human being sis Covey 's "Six Paradigms of
Human Interactions" (Covey 217). I believe if one uses the six paradigms it can improve your
leadership potential, and these concepts can shape you into a great leader. The first paradigm is
"Win/Win" (Covey 217). This is "constantly seeking mutual benefits in all human interactions"
(Covey 217). This can shape an individual into a great leader, because you would never make any
one mad, and everyone would resultingly be happy. The second paradigm is "Win/Lose" (Covey
218). According to Covey, this is "the authoritarian approach" (Covey 218). To me you need this to
be a good leader. The next paradigm is "Lose/Win" (Covey 220). This one is pretty much caving in
and being a friend. This is a necessity when you become a leader, because you do not want to be a

Our relationships with others depend on our mentality of thinking. Many people would like to
receive the promotion or save their marriage but, they were not able to properly interact with others.
There are six paradigms of human interaction (Covey, 1989). The fifth habit is to seek to
understand, and then be understood. That means that the listener should not just hear the other
person, but try to empathize with him. Most of the people can hear what others have to say; however
they don't listen to others, the message that other person is trying to relate goes by them (Covey,
1989). The sixth habit is to synergize. The author is relating to work in the teams. He states that the
all team members are worth more that each of them separately put together. The group depends on
each other. The differences between the people make the group stronger because of their differences.
Every individual has a different prospective (Covey, 1989). The last of seven habits is to sharpen the
saw. Most people tend to forget themselves and tend to stay in one place. Many of the people tend to
focus on the activities that are not relevant to their goals or values. Every person should continue to
grow using the four elements of nature. That involves staying fit in physical condition. That can be
achieved by proper nutrition and daily exercises. Mental fit refers to reading and writing. Social
element of nature refers to servicing to others. The

Analysis Of Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens
In Sean Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens book there are 7 key things teens need to
live a productive, open, and successful life. Covey took 7 key things he though most teens now and
days suffer with or have problems with and made them into habits to make them better people. He
even asked other teens about their problems related to the situation. He's able to capture the
audience's by giving many reasons and examples you could or can relate to the habits. The first
habit of Sean Covey's Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens is to "Be Proactive". Being proactive
means our behaviors and our actions are the result of our choices, not our conditions. It also means
that as human beings we are fully responsible for our own lives. This doesn't mean to be responsible
by being grumpy and rude, but to show kindness and spread joy to others. Like the saying goes, "Be
so happy that when others see you they become as happy too". The things that we are concerned
about is seen as our"Circle of Concern" and the things we can do something about is described as
our "Circle of Influence". To be proactive is that you are the force to be positive in your life. That
you have to look at yourself and change actions that aren't helping.
The second habit of Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens is to begin with the end in mind. Like
you don't want to start a problem without thinking about the outcome of the situation. This habit
practically mean to plan ahead and to make goals. Planning ahead means you most likely will
achieve your goal because you know what the outcome will be. Not beginning with the end in mind
is like not thinking about tomorrow and just flowing with life with no plan. If you we aren't clear
about our end in mind, we'll wander, waste time, and get lost. The third habit of the book Seven
Habits Of Highly Effective Teens is to put first things first. To put first things first is to execute on
most important priorities. To live a more balanced existence, you have to recognize that not doing
everything that comes along is okay. There's no need to overextend yourself. All it takes is realizing
that it's alright to say no when necessary and then focus on your highest priorities.

Be Proactive and Begin with the End in Mind
Stephen R. Covey writes that there is not a greater investment to grow in new habits, and he invites
his readers to study these habits and be patient with ourselves. I like that he writes, "be patient with
ourselves," because we are people that are not perfect and we cannot achieve that perfection in
ourselves. The first two habits are, Be Proactive and Begin with the End in Mind. Both of these
habits are about moving from independence to interdependence that focus mainly on our choices or
mastering your thoughts. I like Covey's statement, "I am responsible for me, and I can choose."
Proactive
When I first thought of proactive, it meant to recall all of the scenarios that may come up so that I
may be ready. Actually, this is how Covey uses his right brain, in imaging all the things that can go
wrong and dreaming up ways to help. This is natural for me to meditate this way. However, this
kind of proactive can create worry and keep me up late over visualizing. I prefer praying and sitting
with Jesus, because it is impossible to come up with everything alone in my own head and this
causes too much work. I believe in working with a team and what comes to each of us in a situation
is valuable and ideas that could only come from someone who ruminates different that I do. Overly
proactive people sometimes can be manipulative, because they have already worked through
everything in their head and if they are open to new

proactive is part of human nature and humans are responsible for their own lives. He indicated the
details of a social map which consist of Genetic determinism (Ancestors), Psychic determinism
(Parents) and Environment determinism (Boss or something in the environment). The proactive
concept was explained further using the Stimulus and Response relationship and the catalyst story of

In the same way, Algebra comes before calculus. To expatiate on this point, Covey noted that
independence is an achievement. Interdependence is a choice only independent people can make. So
the place to begin building any relationship is inside ourselves, inside our Circle of Influence, our
own character. Stephen further recollected an incidence he had with his two sons to explain what
attending to little things meant. To him, Small discourtesies, little unkindnesses, little forms of
disrespect make large withdrawals in our lives. In relationship for instance, the little thing are the
big things. Keeping commitments, Clarifying expectations, showing personal integrity, apologizing
sincerely when we make a withdrawal from our emotional bank are important things to do to make
deposits in to our emotional banks. Covey mentioned that, with the paradigm of the Emotional Bank
Account in mind, we're ready to move into the habits of Public Victory, or success in working with
other people. Habit 4: Think win–win (Principles of Interpersonal leadership) Under this heading,
Covey narrated his personal experience at work with a company and at the end he noted that,
whether you are the president of a company or the janitor, the moment you step from independence
into interdependence in any capacity, you step into a leadership role. You are in a position of
influencing other people. And the habit of effective interpersonal leadership is to think win–win. In

7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
When I went through professor's required book list, I recognized the book, 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People, at my first glance. I do remember that I read its Chinese version which was a
present from my grandfather almost ten years ago when I was a teenager. Shortly after feeling
excited, I was a little embarrassed because I barely remember the 7 habits. Now as an adult almost a
decade later, after finished the book, the original work, I was impressed. The immaturity made me
believe that most of the points of Covey were too obvious and trite to make sense. But now those
things Covey talked about are actually tough challenges in my life. The precondition of the Covey's
theory is that a lot of people fix the problems in a scattershot approach which will eventually lead to
chaos or disappointment for the most time. The author's answer to this is to be an effective person.
People needs to learn to solve problems from personal life, study and work with an approach based
on a same core values. The book is about how to develop the core values basically through the seven
habits in order to be a more effective person. The seven habits also help to achieve greater insights
into leadership and management in people's personal and professional life in the effective way.
The seven habits are: 1. Be proactive 2. Begin with the end in mind 3. Put first things first 4. Think

The Field Of Business Administration Essay
The field of business administration is not as straightforward as one may perceive. While there is a
specific process that business owners must undergo in order to start up their own company, there is
no exact right or wrong method to create and sustain a successful business. It is ultimately up to us,
as potential leaders of any organization or project, to utilize our own personal values in order to help
shape a realistic vision that all of us can achieve together.
Because business administration is a competitive field, there are no grounds for complacency; one
has to constantly be enthusiastic about growth in order to progress. An individual needs to know
what he can and can not control, in order to improve on the factors that can be controlled. A team
needs to establish healthy relationships within each individual, and then develop mutual respect and
understanding for one another. A corporation, with the direction of its leaders, needs to set clear,
concrete, reachable goals that everybody in the organization can accomplish.
The approach on how to organize, plan, and execute any given plan is subjective, yet crucial.
Starting up your own company takes patience and time; however, a number of entrepreneurs tend to
take out huge loans in an attempt to build a flashy–looking business with no business plan
whatsoever. In fact, 33% of businesses will fail in "these first two crucial years, the main cause
being a lack of experience" (Jorden). Therefore, a business's success

Cons And Disadvantages Of Social Media
Social Media Social media are technologies or networks that allow people, nowadays, to share
informations and connect with each other. There are different types of social media, but the most
used are Facebook, YouTube, Gmail, Yahoo, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc. With the advancement in
technology, today these social media are an everyday part of life in most part of the world. They are
used for different reason and the outcome is always different. Because everything has both
advantages and disadvantages or inconveniences, social media too affect the user in both positives
and negatives ways. Like it is stated above, social media can be used for communication. The new
technologies have made it easier to connect the world in just a glimpse. With a network like
WhatsApp or Facebook, a person here in the United States is able to talk and see at the same time
his friends and family members who are in different part of the world. Social media are another way
to make friends too. For instance, if a person is too shy or just too quiet to speak, social media can
help that person have friends and communicate with them. In other words, technology and social
media work together to link the world. Other than connecting people, social media can also be used
for advertising. Today, about all businesses market their products through advertisements. If not for
the advertisements, nearly every businesses would not be able to sell their latest products. People
learn about their country or other countries in the world through news, which are given through
social media like YouTube channel. They also can learn about new products or weather conditions
in their areas; they are able now to learn about everything that is happening either where they live or

Conflict Management Styles In Mean Girls
Like Stephen R. Covey once said, "most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they
listen with the intent to reply" (Stephen Covey). Most people do not try to see things in the point pf
view of others, they like to jump to conclusion. Conflict is an interaction between interdependent
people who perceive that they have contradictory goals or scare resources. The more important the
relationship is, the more important the conflict is.
The movie "mean girls" is about a sixteen–year old homeschooled girl named Cady Heron who
lived in Africa for the last 12 years of her life. After 12 years she returns to the United States and is
now going to High school. Attending public school for the first time in her life. The homeschooled
girl entered girl world that is full of lies, drama, gossip, boys and rules. She started hanging out with
the "Plastics" and become friends with. The movie showed many example of conflict management
styles, it reflects on the American culture values and beliefs, and power style.
The movie "Mean Girls" is all about conflict whether it was with the outside groups or each other.
Conflict management is the way we engage in conflict and address disagreements. The movie
"mean girls", every character showed many conflict management styles. Two character who used
many conflict management styles in the movie were Cady and Regina. Cady used the Avoidance
style. The avoidance is deliberate decision to take no action when dealing with conflict. Avoidance
conflict style is Basically being avoiding the conflict all together. Examples of when Cady used the
avoidance style is when she eats her lunch in the bathroom because she could not find people to sit
with. Another time she shows the avoidance style is when she did not tell her parents how the school
was really going. She just ran to her room. She ignored the conflict all together. The opposite of
Cady is Regina, the "queen bee" of the school. The conflict style Regina used was competition.
Competition is someone thinking that the conflict has to go their way or the highway, is a win–lose
situation. She showed this conflict style is when she told Aaron the rumors that Cady was stalking
him and then got back with him. Even though she did

On Course By Skip Downing And 7 Habits
Writing is a skill most people acquire when they are young and develop those skills as they grow
older over time. As children, we learn how to read and write when in elementary school. Our school
teachers teach us how to write; the size, the style, and the format. The books On Course by Skip
Downing and 7 Habits by Stephen Covey, they are doing something similar. They explain to us
about different ways to be effective, and how to better those skills. Both of these authors cover
many different topics covering most areas of our lives. They do go into detail about how we think,
and how that affects our daily lives. I believe that the most important habits and topics these two
books cover would be "Think Win–Win," "Seek First To Understand, Than To Be Understood," and
then finally "Discovering Your Preferred Ways To Learning." All these chapters throughout these
two books stick out in my opinion, thus why I think they are the ones I want to share. I firmly
believe that everyone should learn these few tips because it will benefit them greatly.
The first topic I want to mention is when Stephen R. Covey mentions the concept of "Think Win–
Win." The concept of thinking win–win means that it is a state of mind where you think of what
benefits you and what benefits others. Covey mentions 6 different thinking paradigms in this chapter
as well; Win/win, win/lose, lose/win, lose/lose, win, and win/win or no deal. He explains to us that
ways of thinking and paradigms form who we are,

"The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"
The book "The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People" is a really interesting book. This makes you
think about how you are as a person and wonders if you are doing things right or if you are even
doing anything about it. It makes you think about whether or not you are an effective person. The
seven habits gives you a different perspective about life, your relationship with others, and a deeper
understanding on what it really means to be an effective and proactive person. Applying the
perspectives and habits into your life will really change you as a person. As a manager, employee, or

I am not only trying to change myself on the inside but I also have to change myself on the outside.
Covey (2004) discusses about the four dimensions of renewal that include: the physical, mental,
spiritual, and social/emotional dimensions (p. 300). It is cleansing my spiritual dimension by
meditating with peace or with God, or just rethinking about what my values and goals are in life. It
is renewing my physical dimension by eating the right foods, working out, and taking care of my
body. It is continuing to learn new things and being open to new ideas to renew my mental
dimension. Lastly, it is communicating effectively, synergizing, and creating relationships with
people to enhance my social/emotional dimension. Renewing myself can change my perspective on
life, how I perform at work and at school. It can change my attitude and my confidence in myself.
However, I need to work on the four dimensions in a balanced way. I must retain balance and make
sure that I am working on the renewal of the four dimensions because if I do not have balance, I will
have difficulty in accomplishing the renewal of another

First Things First, By Stephen R. Covey

  • 1. First Things First, By Stephen R. Covey Over the span of my life I have already set a variety of goals, some achieved, others not, but I will continue to set daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals for the rest of my life and strive to achieve as many as I can. Out of the many successful goals I have experienced, there are two that I have achieved that stick out to me. The first occurred during the end of my sophomore year in high school when I got the role of flute section leader in the Pride of the Vikings Marching Band. In order to reach this particular goal, I had to attend section leader camp, which was every day after school for one week in May. At camp we went over how to teach people how to march and how to hold their instrument correctly. We also had to learn the correct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Covey's suggestions about setting and achieving goals. In his life, Covey was an American author, keynote speaker, and businessman. In chapter 7 of his self–help book titled "First Things First," he discussed the four personal endowments and how they relate to the characteristics of effective goal setting. The four personal endowments include, imagination, will, conscience, and self–awareness. All of these are necessary for successful goals. Imagination helps you visualize your possibilities, whereas your will is what pays the price. Your conscience is the deeper connection of your goal to the mission. On the other hand, self–awareness means you know how much you can handle and what you can do. Covey states that goal setting is a complex but powerful process. He suggests that we set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, lifetime, organizational, personal, long–term, and short term goals. According to Covey goals should be measurable, specific, and time–bound. My goals to be assigned the role of flute section leader and to be accepted into the all–city honor band had those three characteristics. They both were measureable, because I either became section leader, or I didn't, and I either made it in the group, or not. Both were also specific and time–bound because they had a timeline I had to follow, in detail, when my auditions and practices were. Covey also explains the three vital questions in goal setting. The first is "What," which deals with what you want to accomplish. This focuses on growth and contribution. While setting both of my music goals, I was focused on growing as a musician, and contributing to my band to do my part to make fun and emotional music. The second question is "Why," which is about why you want to achieve the goal. This is the key to motivation and gives people the strength and energy to keep trying. My main motivator was myself, and making ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Principles Centered Leadership By Stephen R. Covey Introduction Through careful, calculated progression Principle centered Leadership presents a plan that first prepares the leader him or herself, then illustrates how to use that leadership to manage an organization. Author Stephen R. Covey introduces the notion that we as individuals and organizations need to not only survive but also to thrive in the faces of adversity, change and success. Despite their efforts to improve, countless companies continue to fail all the while spending millions of dollars, time and effort every year. Reversing this requires the full measure of individuals' creativity, talent, and energy in the midst of this changing adversity. At the fundamental root of this success is balance; balance in our personal life, family life, and professional life, which is discussed in great detail throughout the text. What Covey offers is principle–centered leadership: a long–term, intrinsic approach to developing people and organizations. The key to dealing with today's challenges is the integration and employment of a principle–centered core within each individual as well as within an organization. Covey offers insights and guidelines that demonstrate how these principles can be applied both at work and at home which lead to an increase in our productivity and the quality of our work. It also leads individuals to a new appreciation of the importance of establishing more personal and professional relationships as they strive to enjoy a balanced, rewarding ... • 3. The Habits Of Authentic Leadership Habits of Authentic Leadership Stephen R. Covey has authored numerous leadership and personal growth books. This paper focuses on the book titled "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and its relation to the theory of authentic leadership as well as its application to nursing practice. All seven of the habits are valuable to nursing practice, enabling nurses to become more effective leaders and care providers. The habits applying to authentic leadership principles that will be discussed are begin with the end in mind, think win–win, synergize, and finally, sharpen the saw. Relationships are built and connections are established with others in order to strengthen the human bond (Shirey, 2006). Authentic leaders display self–discipline by establishing a balance among their personal and professional lives (Shirey, 2006). These characteristics apply to the following habits of effective people and can also be incorporated into nursing practice. Begin With the End in Mind One habit discussed in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is "Begin with the end in mind", which is based on the concept of beginning every day and every task with a clear vision of the desired goals and direction while being proactive to make these happen. This habit is grounded on the ability to envision the future and define one's personal, moral, and ethical guidelines which contribute to the attainment of the desired outcomes or destination (Covey, 2004). This concept aligns with the characteristics of purpose and value in an authentic leader. Having this clear vision and drive to achieve outcomes is also an important in a quality nurse. Each nurse possesses their own personal, moral, and ethical frameworks and these direct how nurses will achieve their goals and which outcomes they desire. The ability to have a precise view of what one wants to accomplish would allow a nurse to follow his/her dreams and passions to achieve what they truly desire in the flexible field of ... • 4. Conflict Resolution By Stephen R. Covey Conflict Resolution To win or not to win, that is the question...or is it? Stephen R. Covey suggests that it does not have to be a win–lose scenario. Covey subscribes to a win–win philosophy, "Win– win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions" (Covey, n.d.). When it comes to parent–teacher conflicts, Covey's "Win–win" approach is the best solution to deescalate frustrations and maintain positive relationships between the teacher, students, and parents. This paper will examine two conflict scenarios and determine which actions achieved a mutual beneficial outcome. In the first parent–teacher conflict scenario, a mother storms into her son's classroom and demands if the teacher there is the one she is looking for. After his affirmation, she begins to vent her frustrations about an assignment that made her child bring a homeless man into her home. It is not long before the teacher cuts the parent off and condescendingly informs her he has no idea what she is talking about or who she is. As the mother angrily tells him it is about an assignment he gave her child, the teacher immediately jumps to the defensive. The teacher berates her communication with her child, uses sarcasm when explaining the assignment he gave out and the intent behind it, and made it known that he was not taking her concerns seriously as he suggested she put her complaints in a suggestion box. • 6. The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People After reading both Stephen R. Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and John C Maxwell's book "The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader" I can say both of them presented very effective reading tools that shows you ways to improve your overall daily life. The way Stephen Covey accomplished this was by proving us, which is in the title itself, the seven habits which are based on principles. After you learn and develop these principles, they bring long term benefits just like John C Maxwell's Qualities do as well. The way John C Maxwell accomplishes this is by proving us a list of the top qualities he thought every leader needed and with those top qualities, he explained in every chapter separately, in a simple easy to read step by step guide of how to recognize, grow, and learn every quality in each chapter. John C Maxwell's book and Stephen R. Covey's both encourage us to embody these qualities or principles to help better ourselves and improve all overall daily life. Here are some ways that the two books The 7 habits of Highly Effective People and The 21 Qualities of a Leader comes together. The first place that the two books come together is Habit1, Principles of Personal Vision and the quality Vision. In Habit 1 Covey explains "until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world." • 7. The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People Essay The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Summary The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a best selling book by Stephen R. Covey. The book has become a management tool for many companies. Covey wrote the book after reviewing literature on success from the last two centuries. Covey discovered that as he reviewed the literature on success, that the most current literature was based mainly on success based on having the "right" personality traits. Covey calls this the "Personality Ethic". The Personality Ethic focuses more on success being a product of personality traits and maintaining a positive attitude. The author stresses that people need to go back to the "Character Ethic" which is based on what Covey calls "natural laws" that have always existed. The Character Ethic focuses on principles such as fairness, integrity, honesty, human dignity, service and quality. Covey wants people to examine their way of thinking from the "inside out" to see if we are applying the Personality Ethic or the Character Ethic. The Seven Habits Covey explains that habits are "powerful factors in our lives" and he defines habits as "the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire". (Covey, pg 46–47). Effective habits are defined as internalized principles and patterns of behavior. The Seven Habits that Covey tells the reader about are in harmony with natural laws and therefore, in harmony with the Character Ethic. In accomplishing this shift to become more effective, Covey presents seven habits that serve to bring about change. Habit 1 is Be Proactive. This means that we need to accept the reality that we have the power to choose how we respond to the circumstances in our lives. We are ultimately responsible for our own lives, our actions, and our attitudes. By choosing to respond positively to events in our lives by creatively using our resources and initiative, we become proactive. If we are to truly become effective we must also come to realize that there are things we can control and things we cannot. Covey calls this our Circle of Concern vs. our Circle of Influence. Our time and energy needs to be focused on our Circle of Influence, those things that we can control or have influence on rather than our entire Circle of Concern, those things we are concerned about. Often times our Circle of Concern is larger than our Circle of Influence and therein ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Toxic Emotions At Work : How Compassionate Managers Handle... Reading "Toxic Emotions at Work: How Compassionate Managers Handle Pain and Conflict", by Peter J. Frost. When leadership positions, such as managers and supervisors, take corrective measures it can become a very toxic environment in the workplace. There is help to alleviate this type of the employee emotion. Leadership must be compassionate to the needs of their employees, when handling a very difficult situation. This type of emotional pain felt by the employee can result in decreased productivity and a lower quality of work. Leadership needs to be proactive to ease this toxic emotion. When leadership is compassionate they truly promote a healthy productive environment for their employees. "The One Minute Manager", by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson. The main reading theme is managers should reflect a compassionate behavior to his/her employees. They also need to be open with them about their expectations. "This document theme seems to be based on two underlying premises: one quality of theme spent with subordinates as with one 's children more important than quality and to in the end, people subordinates should really be managing themselves" (Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson, 1981, page 270). The reading states that managers and employees can both benefit with this type of behavior. To have a successful organization managers must clarify company goals and employee responsibilities as it relates to their performance standards. The authors believe that ... • 11. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R.... The first habit listed by Stephen R. Covey, is to be proactive. He breaks down the word to create a simple reference, "response–able" means understanding that you are accountable for your life. Your behaviors are determined by you. Viktor Frankl was placed into a Jewish concentration camp during WWII; he endured great misfortune during this period of his life. To cope with the experience he envisioned himself simply watching the catastrophic torture he would endure in an out–of–body type of experience. He discovered, "between stimulus and response, man was free to choose," by this he meant he could escape the torture by realizing that he was in control of his own behaviors, not in his physical state but his mental state. By having control of himself he did not fall prey to reactive tendencies. The referenced statement would be considered false; Covey believes that people are responsible for their own actions and behaviors. To rebound the blame is merely what he refers to as a reactive person that uses their physical environment to dismiss their own irresponsible behaviors. In doing this the person essentially becomes part of the problem, instead of the solution. This statement would also fall into the "circle of concern" as it refers to the actions of how others are impacting your life. This area is how reactive individuals may choose to let people affect their life. Leadership and management as explained by Covey are quite different. The meaning of leadership is the ... Covey first wrote the self–help book entitled, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book has since opened the eyes and hearts to millions of people throughout the world. After discovering the success that so many individuals encountered and still encountering, Dr. Covey decided to write the sequel entitled, The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness. This habit is explained as, "Finding your voice, your calling, your soul's code and inspire others to do the same." What does that mean exactly and how would one implement that particular habit into the business world? Understanding that not every person has traveled the same, maybe not even a similar, path that has been journeyed more often. During the research process I discovered a DVD in a sleeve in the 8th habit book. This DVD contained multiple videos supporting the belief and practice of the 8th habit. One of the videos that I viewed was entitled "Mauritius", Mauritius is an island nation off the southeast coast of Africa. This particular nation runs the government quite well, in my opinion. It is the countries common belief and daily practice that, "It takes a world of difference to make a difference in the world." This country has multiple forms of religious practices and beliefs, but yet, these different people coexist without major turmoil and animosity. They do this simply by knowing their common purpose, and abiding by a strong set of principles. Which in–turn, any effective leader, in any setting, would poses, actively practice, and encourage these same behaviors. Stephen R. Covey, then later, explains the nature of leadership today as, "The more you can get people committed to a common vision, a common purpose, and a set of principles that they already have inside of them. According to the course textbook, leadership can be defined as "the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals." (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, 2009, p.4) Although this statement is valid, it is my firm belief that it is a leader's responsibility to do make a positive impact in a subordinate's life. Building trust in a team is important for reasons other than just having a positive work environment. If trust is not instilled in a team, serious consequences such as death may occur. Military leadership differs from that of the civilian world because in the military, people's lives are on the line. This is a sharp but brutal reality when compared to civilian leadership. The main motivation and concern for civilians is profit for their business. For the Navy, our business is protecting our freedom. Therefore, our most valuable asset to our business is our people, not turning a profit. As a perspective Naval Aviator, building trust among subordinates is applicable to my life over the next several years. An example of how serious consequences can occur when trust is not instilled in a team can be seen through the aviation community. Servant leadership, unlike transactional, is focused on serving the individual needs of others before the needs of the organization. The first habit he talked about was being proactive in our lives. To be proactive we need to have self–awareness of our actions. We need to take responsibility for the choices we make and take responsible for those choices. Second habit is to begin with the end in mind. This is where you develop a vision of what you want to become and our conscience will decide what values will guide you and everything that you do should have an end. Third habit is to put first things first. This is where we need to have discipline to our day so we make sure that we focus on what is the most important to the least important. This is where our will power will come into effect so we don't act on our desires or impulses. Habit four is the win–win thought process. To be successful you need to look at the problem between you and the other party and approach it with a mutual solution. To do this it requires understanding and being understood. It is one of the most popular statistical environment for machine learning and general data analysis. R is licensed under the GNU General Public License, with copyright held by The R Foundation for Statistical Computing. The source code of R is written in R, C and Fortran. R is free, open source and cross platform with a large community of users. Even though R programming is challenging, the CRAN packages reduce the number of lines coding, with a help command giving explanation and examples of use. Besides, if the user is already familiar with python or with a similar programming language, Python seems a natural choice. Python is more flexible and gives the freedom of development. R on the other hand, is more suitable if the user is specifically interested in statistical computations and visualizations. For non–programmers, R can be very exciting; the user can easily do data explorations and create some amazing plots with little effort. There is some strange feeling of satisfaction that comes along with being the boss. This was an example on why I personally believe that self–esteem plays a big role in being effective, because this exact situation happened to me this year in my math class. Therefore, that is why I completely agree with Downing about self–esteem and that it plays a big role in being effective. During On Course by Skip Downing and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey they talk about many different ways one can interact with other human beings. In my opinion, the best way to communicate with other human being sis Covey 's "Six Paradigms of Human Interactions" (Covey 217). I believe if one uses the six paradigms it can improve your leadership potential, and these concepts can shape you into a great leader. The first paradigm is "Win/Win" (Covey 217). This is "constantly seeking mutual benefits in all human interactions" (Covey 217). This can shape an individual into a great leader, because you would never make any one mad, and everyone would resultingly be happy. The second paradigm is "Win/Lose" (Covey 218). According to Covey, this is "the authoritarian approach" (Covey 218). To me you need this to be a good leader. The next paradigm is "Lose/Win" (Covey 220). This one is pretty much caving in and being a friend. This is a necessity when you become a leader, because you do not want to be a mean boss or have your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many people would like to receive the promotion or save their marriage but, they were not able to properly interact with others. There are six paradigms of human interaction (Covey, 1989). The fifth habit is to seek to understand, and then be understood. That means that the listener should not just hear the other person, but try to empathize with him. Most of the people can hear what others have to say; however they don't listen to others, the message that other person is trying to relate goes by them (Covey, 1989). The sixth habit is to synergize. The author is relating to work in the teams. He states that the all team members are worth more that each of them separately put together. The group depends on each other. The differences between the people make the group stronger because of their differences. Every individual has a different prospective (Covey, 1989). The last of seven habits is to sharpen the saw. Most people tend to forget themselves and tend to stay in one place. Many of the people tend to focus on the activities that are not relevant to their goals or values. Every person should continue to grow using the four elements of nature. That involves staying fit in physical condition. That can be achieved by proper nutrition and daily exercises. Mental fit refers to reading and writing. Social element of nature refers to servicing to others. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Analysis Of Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens In Sean Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens book there are 7 key things teens need to live a productive, open, and successful life. Covey took 7 key things he though most teens now and days suffer with or have problems with and made them into habits to make them better people. He even asked other teens about their problems related to the situation. He's able to capture the audience's by giving many reasons and examples you could or can relate to the habits. The first habit of Sean Covey's Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens is to "Be Proactive". Being proactive means our behaviors and our actions are the result of our choices, not our conditions. It also means that as human beings we are fully responsible for our own lives. This doesn't mean to be responsible by being grumpy and rude, but to show kindness and spread joy to others. Like the saying goes, "Be so happy that when others see you they become as happy too". The things that we are concerned about is seen as our"Circle of Concern" and the things we can do something about is described as our "Circle of Influence". To be proactive is that you are the force to be positive in your life. That you have to look at yourself and change actions that aren't helping. The second habit of Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens is to begin with the end in mind. Like you don't want to start a problem without thinking about the outcome of the situation. This habit practically mean to plan ahead and to make goals. Planning ahead means you most likely will achieve your goal because you know what the outcome will be. Not beginning with the end in mind is like not thinking about tomorrow and just flowing with life with no plan. If you we aren't clear about our end in mind, we'll wander, waste time, and get lost. The third habit of the book Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens is to put first things first. To put first things first is to execute on most important priorities. To live a more balanced existence, you have to recognize that not doing everything that comes along is okay. There's no need to overextend yourself. All it takes is realizing that it's alright to say no when necessary and then focus on your highest priorities. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Proactive And Begin With The End Of Mind By Stephen R.... Be Proactive and Begin with the End in Mind Stephen R. Covey writes that there is not a greater investment to grow in new habits, and he invites his readers to study these habits and be patient with ourselves. I like that he writes, "be patient with ourselves," because we are people that are not perfect and we cannot achieve that perfection in ourselves. The first two habits are, Be Proactive and Begin with the End in Mind. Both of these habits are about moving from independence to interdependence that focus mainly on our choices or mastering your thoughts. I like Covey's statement, "I am responsible for me, and I can choose." Proactive When I first thought of proactive, it meant to recall all of the scenarios that may come up so that I may be ready. Actually, this is how Covey uses his right brain, in imaging all the things that can go wrong and dreaming up ways to help. This is natural for me to meditate this way. However, this kind of proactive can create worry and keep me up late over visualizing. I prefer praying and sitting with Jesus, because it is impossible to come up with everything alone in my own head and this causes too much work. I believe in working with a team and what comes to each of us in a situation is valuable and ideas that could only come from someone who ruminates different that I do. Overly proactive people sometimes can be manipulative, because they have already worked through everything in their head and if they are open to new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What makes a person effective? How do our perceptions affect our world view? Will changing my perceptions make a difference in my attitude toward success? Successful people will always hold these questions in tension as they strive to higher levels of effectiveness and the tension between "concerns" and "influence". Personal effectiveness is much more than learning a few techniques or using the right advisors or self help program. He indicated the details of a social map which consist of Genetic determinism (Ancestors), Psychic determinism (Parents) and Environment determinism (Boss or something in the environment). The proactive concept was explained further using the Stimulus and Response relationship and the catalyst story of Viltor Frankl. Between Stimulus and Response, man has the ability or freedom to choose. This means one can decide how to reactive to thing or how to handle each situation. What matters most is how we respond to what we experience in life. We need to take initiative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the same way, Algebra comes before calculus. To expatiate on this point, Covey noted that independence is an achievement. Interdependence is a choice only independent people can make. So the place to begin building any relationship is inside ourselves, inside our Circle of Influence, our own character. Stephen further recollected an incidence he had with his two sons to explain what attending to little things meant. To him, Small discourtesies, little unkindnesses, little forms of disrespect make large withdrawals in our lives. In relationship for instance, the little thing are the big things. Keeping commitments, Clarifying expectations, showing personal integrity, apologizing sincerely when we make a withdrawal from our emotional bank are important things to do to make deposits in to our emotional banks. Covey mentioned that, with the paradigm of the Emotional Bank Account in mind, we're ready to move into the habits of Public Victory, or success in working with other people. Habit 4: Think win–win (Principles of Interpersonal leadership) Under this heading, Covey narrated his personal experience at work with a company and at the end he noted that, whether you are the president of a company or the janitor, the moment you step from independence into interdependence in any capacity, you step into a leadership role. You are in a position of influencing other people. And the habit of effective interpersonal leadership is to think win–win. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Covey When I went through professor's required book list, I recognized the book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, at my first glance. I do remember that I read its Chinese version which was a present from my grandfather almost ten years ago when I was a teenager. Shortly after feeling excited, I was a little embarrassed because I barely remember the 7 habits. Now as an adult almost a decade later, after finished the book, the original work, I was impressed. The immaturity made me believe that most of the points of Covey were too obvious and trite to make sense. But now those things Covey talked about are actually tough challenges in my life. The precondition of the Covey's theory is that a lot of people fix the problems in a scattershot approach which will eventually lead to chaos or disappointment for the most time. The author's answer to this is to be an effective person. People needs to learn to solve problems from personal life, study and work with an approach based on a same core values. The book is about how to develop the core values basically through the seven habits in order to be a more effective person. The seven habits also help to achieve greater insights into leadership and management in people's personal and professional life in the effective way. The seven habits are: 1. Be proactive 2. • 35. The Field Of Business Administration Essay The field of business administration is not as straightforward as one may perceive. While there is a specific process that business owners must undergo in order to start up their own company, there is no exact right or wrong method to create and sustain a successful business. It is ultimately up to us, as potential leaders of any organization or project, to utilize our own personal values in order to help shape a realistic vision that all of us can achieve together. Because business administration is a competitive field, there are no grounds for complacency; one has to constantly be enthusiastic about growth in order to progress. An individual needs to know what he can and can not control, in order to improve on the factors that can be controlled. A team needs to establish healthy relationships within each individual, and then develop mutual respect and understanding for one another. A corporation, with the direction of its leaders, needs to set clear, concrete, reachable goals that everybody in the organization can accomplish. The approach on how to organize, plan, and execute any given plan is subjective, yet crucial. Starting up your own company takes patience and time; however, a number of entrepreneurs tend to take out huge loans in an attempt to build a flashy–looking business with no business plan whatsoever. In fact, 33% of businesses will fail in "these first two crucial years, the main cause being a lack of experience" (Jorden). Therefore, a business's success ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With a network like WhatsApp or Facebook, a person here in the United States is able to talk and see at the same time his friends and family members who are in different part of the world. Social media are another way to make friends too. For instance, if a person is too shy or just too quiet to speak, social media can help that person have friends and communicate with them. In other words, technology and social media work together to link the world. Other than connecting people, social media can also be used for advertising. • 38. Conflict Management Styles In Mean Girls Like Stephen R. Covey once said, "most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply" (Stephen Covey). Most people do not try to see things in the point pf view of others, they like to jump to conclusion. Conflict is an interaction between interdependent people who perceive that they have contradictory goals or scare resources. The more important the relationship is, the more important the conflict is. The movie "mean girls" is about a sixteen–year old homeschooled girl named Cady Heron who lived in Africa for the last 12 years of her life. After 12 years she returns to the United States and is now going to High school. Attending public school for the first time in her life. The movie "mean girls", every character showed many conflict management styles. Two character who used many conflict management styles in the movie were Cady and Regina. Cady used the Avoidance style. The avoidance is deliberate decision to take no action when dealing with conflict. Avoidance conflict style is Basically being avoiding the conflict all together. Examples of when Cady used the avoidance style is when she eats her lunch in the bathroom because she could not find people to sit with. Another time she shows the avoidance style is when she did not tell her parents how the school was really going. She just ran to her room. She ignored the conflict all together. The opposite of Cady is Regina, the "queen bee" of the school. The conflict style Regina used was competition. As children, we learn how to read and write when in elementary school. Our school teachers teach us how to write; the size, the style, and the format. The books On Course by Skip Downing and 7 Habits by Stephen Covey, they are doing something similar. They explain to us about different ways to be effective, and how to better those skills. Both of these authors cover many different topics covering most areas of our lives. They do go into detail about how we think, and how that affects our daily lives. I believe that the most important habits and topics these two books cover would be "Think Win–Win," "Seek First To Understand, Than To Be Understood," and then finally "Discovering Your Preferred Ways To Learning." All these chapters throughout these two books stick out in my opinion, thus why I think they are the ones I want to share. I firmly believe that everyone should learn these few tips because it will benefit them greatly. The first topic I want to mention is when Stephen R. Covey mentions the concept of "Think Win– Win." The concept of thinking win–win means that it is a state of mind where you think of what benefits you and what benefits others. Covey mentions 6 different thinking paradigms in this chapter as well; Win/win, win/lose, lose/win, lose/lose, win, and win/win or no deal.
