On this day Father Gapon led a group of workers to the Tsar's Winter Palace in a peaceful march to
present a petition to the Tsar in which they demanded better working conditions. Their demands
included an 8 hour day, a minimum wage and freedom of speech and press. This shows us that the
workers were tired of the conditions they were facing, and they wanted reform. However, during the
peaceful protest the guards of the Winter Palace began to open fire, killing around 200 and injuring

food etc. The Zemstvas success offered a more attractive alternative to the government, which was

It would be true to say that the Tsar remained unscathed after 1905, as he remained on the throne
until 1917. However, it would also be true to say that the Tsar was permanently damaged by the
1905 revolution.
Before 1905, there was much unrest and discontent. Famines in 1897, 1898 and 1901, made the
already struggling countryside even worse, and the usually loyal peasantry held uprisings in two

Nicolas II was forced to make concessions. He would never fully recover from this event as
Revolutionaries saw this as an example where violence achieved aims. On 3rd March1905, the Tsar
offered a consultative assembly to try and bring an end to the violence.
The rest of 1905 continued in a similar way. Defeats in Japan caused further outrage in Russia,
which caused the Tsar to make further concessions. For example; the Battle of Tsushima on the 27th
May, (where the Russian Baltic fleet were destroyed), lead to a disorder of widespread strikes in
June and August, which lead to the Tsar promising an Imperial Duma on the 19th August.
The formation of the Union of Unions on the 8th March was significant, as the middle classes and
peasants formed new opposition to the Tsar. This affected the Tsar long–term as never before had
these groups opposed him. Nicholas II was forced to introduce new measures to regain the support
of these people.
Further defeats at Mukden and Tsushima meant that the Tsar was in danger of loosing more support.
His repeated pledges of March were ridiculed as no plans were put into action and further protests
continued.

The Russian Revolution of 1905 comes as the late tsarism period. Some of the major causes to the
Russian revolution were caused by long–term and short–term effects. Some of these major effects
were Russia 's rapid industrialization and modernization which had inherent problems. The rise of
capitalism led to an increase of inequality between the classes. In addition, the mistakes of the
Russo–Japanese war emerged upon the boundaries of the Russian political climate. These series of
revolutionary events led to the Tsar of Russia to issue the October Manifesto. In the October
Manifesto, the Tsar conceded powers including the creation of the Duma, which was a Russian
parliament. In this idea, the Duma could pass or reject all laws proposed by the Tsar. However, the
Tsar composed the right to remove and reestablish the Duma whenever he saw fit, which only
caused anger to the people as the years continued.
The 1905 Russian Revolution was caused by contributory factors such as the long–term and short–
term problems in Russia. Some long–term effects were the growth of the reformist groups like the
social democrats the social revolutionaries and other liberal groups that had formed around that
time. Another long–term effect was the instability of Russia– autocratic rule and repression which
were characterized in the reigns of Alexander the III and also in the reign of Nicholas II. However,

The idea of the paper was to establish it as the leading underground revolutionary paper that would
push forward the revolutionary movement.
In 1902 he published a pamphlet called " What is to be done?" This pamphlet contained his radical
ideas towards the nature of a revolutionary party. In this pamphlet, there were three main points that
Lenin made in relation to the role of a revolutionary party.
"An organisation of revolutionaries must contain primarily and chiefly people whose occupation is
revolutionary activityâ€¦ This organisation must necessarily be not very broad, and as secret as
possible."
This idea was stating that he wanted the party to consist of activists. He wanted people to go out and
do something for the party rather than sit around and do nothing to help the cause of the party. This
idea was later to contribute towards the split of the RSDWP.
Lenin also stated;
"The one serious organisational principle for workers in our movement must be the strictest secrecy,
strictest choice of members, training of professional revolutionaries."
Lenin wanted the party to be professional and didn't want the country to know that there was a
revolutionary party being constructed that was to revolt against the current government.

After the expansion of power in the federal government in domestic affairs, the Progressive
presidents did not want to project American power outside of the borders just yet. At first, their
interventions were primarily in the Western Hemisphere. Between 1901 and 1920, U.S. marines
landed in Caribbean countries over twenty times. These ships were sent off to establish stable access
to raw materials like sugar and bananas, and for the bankers with loans to local governments that
might not be repaid. Theodore Roosevelt divided the world into "civilized" and "uncivilized"
nations. Roosevelt became extremely active in international diplomacy, more so than his
predecessors. For example, he helped to negotiate a settlement of the Russo–Japanese War of 1905,
for this he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Roosevelt declared that the Untied States did not
have the slightest desire to expand territory, however, he engaged an intervention in Central
America. His first major action in the region was the separation of Panama from Columbia in order
to construct a canal that would link the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This idea was long before
thought about in history. Since Roosevelt was an an advocate for the American naval development,
he was convinced that a canal would prove to be prosperous to the movement of naval and
commercial ships between the two oceans. The construction of the Panama Canal was not available
until the establishment of their independence from Columbia.

voice of the Russian people." (Khrustalev and M. Steinberg 19). Although the Duma allowed for
slightly more political involvement by the people, the tsar remained the supreme autocrat
(Chamberlin). Nicholas II's rule continued, albeit much shakier than before. He decided to convene
the Duma four times altogether, each time experiencing conflict stemming from their calls for
liberal reform and Nicholas's refusal to compromise (Chamberlin). In the wake of the 1905
Revolution, Nicholas II was committed to the ideal that traditionally conservative values and
structures were necessary for Russia's survival, and that failure to maintain these policies would be

support for Austria–Hungary. This is important, as Austria–Hungary could now feel confident that
they could rely on German support and so that is why in 1914 Austria–Hungary did not hesitate in
