The Pros And Cons Of Independent Movies
In recent years, the film industry has changed drastically. When I was younger, I thought
independent films and documentaries were weird things that only hippies watched. Now, more and
more people adore independent films. Although indie movies do not have the budget of blockbuster
films, they have a unique chance to explore what lies beyond Hollywood norms. Instead of the same
directors and managers deciding what should entertain the masses, regular people can become
creators and reach their own targeted audience. For example, one could make a video about the
harsh conditions of meat factories and share it on Facebook among vegetarian groups. A movie that
narrow in audience would never reach it to the theaters. Also, independent movies explore what
makes a movie "good" and defy cutter–cookie plots. One particularly great acclaimed independent
movie is The Babadook. This film had a very slow build and an unsettling ending, both of which are
not common in most movies.
The norms of television shows are being tested as well. Similarly to HBO, Netflix produces content
of its own instead of relying solely on television networks. This freedom lets it create controversial
material, such as a show called Dear White People. The company describes the show as a journey of
"students of color [who] navigate the daily slights and slippery politics of life at an Ivy League
college that's not nearly as 'post–racial' as it thinks." Popular networks, such as Fox and AMC,
would be leery of

Effects of Living in a Foreign Country Essay
Living away from your country can be a really interesting and unforgettable experience, but at the
same time it has very important effects on one's life. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the three
main effects that living in another country can produce in your personal life.
The major effect, and also a very common one, is that once you start a regular life away from home,
you miss everything. This fact doesn't mean that you are unhappy but that you are aware of being on
your own. Missing your family and the attention they all paid to you is a very usual thing to do.
Little details like sitting on a Sunday morning watching TV alone instead of helping your dad
organizing his things or having a nice chat with your mom makes you ... Show more content on

It's obvious then that you have started to appreciate everything you had back where you belong.
The second main effect would be learning how to accept another type of society and culture into
your daily life. Since you are living in a place with different customs and traditions from yours, you
have to be able to develop yourself in unknown conditions. This means making new friends,
learning other points of view, accepting different opinions and values, and seizing every opportunity
you have to go to new places. Therefore, you'll be able to achieve true knowledge. Suggesting to
change your mind totally or to be square minded would be foolish; the best thing to do would be to
stick to your most important values and, according to them, change those that you believe could be
improved.
The most significant effect of living away from home is the independent behavior that grows inside
of you. Living on your own far from your family gives you a lot of experiences toward organizing
your life. Since it is up to you and no one else to go to school, clean your room, wash your clothes,
and organize your expenses, it is predictable that you will have a good and strong meaning of
responsibility. Being independent and responsible will help you get through life every goal you want
to achieve.
Living far from home, even for a short period of time, can be really hard at the beginning. We have
to remember that all changes are difficult, but they are

Compare And Contrast Independent And Independent Parties
The United States government is mainly divided into two political parties, the Democratic Party and
the Republican Party, with other little parties beginning to branch out. The issues with the two main
parties is how opposite they are on everything. Whether it is the belief on taxes or abortion the
Democrats and the Republicans can never agree, therefore looking towards the Independent Party is
the way to make the United States government stronger. Declaring Independent gives someone the
right to pick and choose who they support based off their own views not just based off of the core
values of one party. The Independent Party best suits the United States because of its diverse beliefs
and openness to vote for any leader that they choose. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A citizen of the United States is guaranteed the right to life, liberty and property in both the
Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. The Independent Party believes
that it is the government's responsibility to protect these rights, this is important because without
those rights life in the United States would be vastly different. Along with protecting citizens rights
to liberty the Independent party believe that private organizations have the right to determine their
own membership, employment and volunteers based on their own beliefs. The Independent party
also opposes legislation "that allows the federal government to suspend our God–given Rights or
that prevents the people from suing government agents for violating citizens' civil or fundamental
rights during times of war, natural disasters, national emergencies, or declarations of martial law,
etc." In regards to the right to property the Independent Party believes that it is unconstitutional to
deprive a citizen of their right to property through

Independent Music's Influence On The Development Of...
INTRODUCTION This essay will be looking at Independent music in relation to the categorisation
of distribution and production. It will also discuss the impact with regard to the development of
musical performances and production. Originally, Independent music referred to bands or artists
who performed and/or produced music autonomously and without the commercial rules and
restrictions associated with major record labels (Hale, 2014). Throughout the years Independent
music has evolved into a broader meaning that is harder to define. Today, the term "Indie" is used to
describe a genre of music and is often used as a prefix to another genre such as Indie–Rock and
Indie–Folk. So what is Indie music? And how did Indie evolve to become a genre? BRIEF
HISTORY OF EARLY INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS 'Independent record labels have been
around since music started being recorded' (King, 2012, p.13). Created by fanatics with a passion for
music, the recording and production process was often self–funded and the purpose was to nurture
talent and creativity. Most of the major record companies we know today would have once started in
this manner (King, 2012). As far back as 1917 independent record labels were recording early Blues
and Jazz music. In 1920 following the end of World War 1 (WW1), Brunswick became known as the
biggest independent label in the USA. Due to financial problems, Brunswick went into receivership
in 1930 and was bought out by Warner Brothers who are still one of

The Department Of Labor Has Issued New Guidance On...
BACKGROUND: The Department of Labor has issued new guidance on differentiating between
employees and independent contractors.
ISSUE:
Issue #1: How does the new DOL guidance change the way in which employers classify employees
and independent contractors?
CONCLUSION:
Issue #1: The DOL has now rejected the common law control test utilized by the IRS and adopted
the economic realities test, saying that most workers are considered employees under the FLSA's
broad definition.
APPLICABLE LAW:
The DOL defines employ as "to suffer or permit to work" and has adopted the "economic realities"
test to determine whether an individual is an employee or an independent contractor. This test
focuses on whether the worker is economically dependent on the employer or legitimately in
business for himself (herself). This test involves six factors, but the DOL notes that they "should not
be applied in a mechanical fashion" but instead with an understanding that the factors are indicators
of economic dependence.
Courts have noted that the "suffer or permit" standard ensures as "broad of a scope of statutory
coverage as possible" and this broad coverage is essential to accomplish the Act's goal. This
definition means that an individual is dependent upon finding employment in the business of others,
whereas independent contractors are those workers with economic independence who are operating
their own business.
The six factors under the "Economic Realities" test are as follows:

Progressive Independent Party Analysis
With Hillary Clinton's recent self–proclamation of "securing" the Democratic nomination, along
with the heated 2016 presidential election, has come an Independent, Progressive political
movement, with citizens calling for action against a system widely believed to have failed them.
"It's time to finally have a vibrant, exciting, VIABLE third party in this country, a place where many
of us who feel disenfranchised; Progressives, Greens, Democratic Socialists, Independents, and
frustrated Democrats and Republicans alike, can feel empowered in the promise of democracy in
our country," says Araquel Bloss, founder of the Progressive Independent Party.
The Party began simply as an online petition written by Ms. Bloss, which quickly went viral after
co–founder Steve Poikonen wrote an article and published it on The Morning Nightcap. Mr.
Poikonen states, "Her vision was simple, eloquent, and absolutely right the hell on time: Let's build
a coalition of Democrats and Progressives who feel their party has left them in the wilderness. Let's
bring in the Green Party folks who have worked so hard for so long only to find themselves locked

Analysis Of Richard 's ' Black Boy '

Analyse the process through which Richard becomes independent and highlight your observations
through judicious textual references which capture the power of Wright 's narrative style.
This novel focuses on the struggle for identity of a young black boy in the Deep South. It is a
powerful testament of his life. In this novel, Wright uses writing to free himself from the prejudice
he is constantly facing, gradually he find that writing allows him to explore new ideas and expand
his imagination, not only this, but Wright discovers through self realisation that he faces a need to
write in order to break out from the constraining world of race, religion and family.

Richard 's mother on the other hand, could be considered a much better role model for him. She
forces him to fight back when he feels people are being unjust towards him, she teaches him to be a
fighter, for instance, when he is beaten and the grocery shopping money is continuously taken from
him, his mother simply reacts by giving him a stick and telling him ‘‘If these boys bother you,
then fight. ' ' She tries to make him tough and independent because she feels that this is the only way
he can survive.
Richard is often disciplined through the church and religion through his grandmother and his
mother. At moments he is very close to being pulled–in by religion. ‘ 'While listening to the vivid
language of the sermons I was pulled towards emotional belief, but as soon as I went out of the
church and saw the bright sunshine and felt the throbbing life of the people in the streets I knew that
none of it was true and that nothing would happen. ' ' This quote shows how non–easily influenced
he is, how he does not feel the need to agree with others just so that he can fit–in. Because he
refuses the church, his grandmother brands him as a sinner who will send the entire household to
hell. His aunt Addie, who teaches him religious class at one point, goes as far as using him as an

Effects Of Pecs On Manding And Speech Development For...
Another study by Tincani, Crozier, and Alazetta (2006) looked at the effects of PECS on manding
and speech development for school–aged children. The study had two different parts, the first study
involved two children with ASD, and the study wanted to increase the amount of independent
manding, displayed when a child exchanges a picture symbol for an object without prompting. The
researchers followed the PECS guidelines in a delayed multiple baseline design study, where
participant one was taught phases I–IV of PECS and participant two was taught phases I and II of
PECS. Both participants greatly increased their independent manding over the course of the study,
especially as they advanced through the phases of PECS. Participant two required more than twice
as many sessions as participant one to meet the acquisition criteria for phases I and II and therefore
did not have the opportunity to learn subsequent phases before the experiment ended. Participant
two did not use any measurable speech during the study and therefore was not used for study two.
Participant one demonstrated only vocal approximations (vocalization that was clearly not the name
of the item the participant was manding) instead of word vocalization and participant two did not
use any measurable speech during the study. Therefore, neither participant qualified to participate in
the second part of the study. (Tincani, Crozier, & Alazetta, 2006). The second part of the study

Hiring Independent Contractors
Engaging independent contractors can be beneficial to employers in various aspects especially to
small business owners. Although hiring independent contractors require higher pay, employers are
more likely to save money by doing so. Because when businesses hire them, they may not be
eligible for benefits such as health insurance or paid for taking time off work, they are not provided
coverage by the worker's compensation insurance, and they will be responsible for submitting their
own income taxes. In addition, it also lowers the administrative costs because payroll taxes, CPP
and EI do not have to be withheld or remitted. Whereas, when employers hire an employee, there
are various expenses that come along, including the cost of employer–contributed ... Show more

Hiring independent contractors would lead to losing some control over your workers since
employers cannot control how they perform their task because you can't closely monitor their work,
unlike employees. You can guide them to how you want a particular job to be done, but usually they
will run their business their way. Since they enjoy autonomy to decide how to do the job at their best
for which they have been hired. (Forbes, 2006) Independent contractors are hired as a short–term
worker, which means that they might not be working with the same company for another project the
next time. Since, they usually operate on a first come, first serve basis, which can become
inconvenient and disruptive for employers if they want to work with the same contractor for all of
their projects. In addition, different contractors may perform their job in a different manner, which
can lead to various results from each contractor. Therefore, hiring employees would be a better
option for such employers. Another disadvantage is that because they are freelancers and work with
various employers, they would only focus on promoting their brands but not the employers.
Furthermore, when an employee is injured at the workplace, employers use the worker's
compensation insurance program to compensate for the injuries so that employees do not sue them
for the damages. However,

Ralph Nader’s Life Lesson in The Seventeen Traditions
Ralph Nader's book, The Seventeen Traditions, discusses several traditions, seventeen in total,
which the author learned from his parents, siblings, and other individuals in the community and
draws certain inspiring life lessons for the current society. The book is genially human and full of
sensory chronicles. Through the key traditions outlined in the book, Nader looks back at his
Lebanese background and childhood experiences that directly shaped his worldview. This review
analyses some of the most significant traditions in the book such as family table, independent
thinking, health, and business. These key traditions will also be vital in discussing the strengths and
weaknesses of the book.
Nader's book has really achieved its principal purpose, which is to educate the society on some of
the values and traditions that are vital in shaping a person's life. Through his key seventeen
traditions, the author has succeeded in creating a modern–day fable on how one can grow from a
child to a responsible and successful adult. Nader's tradition of the family table proves to be the
most significant base in a child's education. The author reveals that the family table provided an
ideal place in which his parents taught him and his siblings respect and manners. To the author, most
of the historical and cultural topics together with various proverbs were discussed at the family
table. This tradition has some connections with my childhood experiences. Just like in the author's

This is a massive benefit of signing a contract with an indie label. As they have there own rights

Government-Funded Independent Schools Essays
An analysis of charter schools – government–funded independent schools that offer either a special
theme or are required to meet a particular performance indicator (Davies & Guppy, 2006) – as an
alternative to mainstream public education reveals that charter schools should be notnot be
supported for several reasons. First, in terms of academic performance, there is little evidence that
charter school students fare better than public school students (Murphy, 2003). Second, as new
providers of education, advocates claim charter schools bring innovative and fresh new thinking to
schooling practices (Davies & Guppy, 2006), but research has found there is weak evidence to

This is opposed to the one–size–fits–all approach of the public education system (Davies & Guppy,
2006). Consequently, student learning and performance should increase. However, there is little
evidence to support this claim; studies have found that improvements in learning are not significant
and are similar to the achievement gains in regular public schools (Murphy, 2003).
The absence of an alleged increase in academic achievement in charter schools compared to public
schools is further supported by a study on the results of the 2003 National Assessment of
Educational Progress (NAEP) mathematics exam in the U.S. The study compared the math scores of
190,000 fourth graders and 153,000 eight graders students from 13,577 public, private and charter
schools (Lubienski & Lubienski, 2006). As opposed to reading, math is more influenced by school
than home experiences and thus, math scores offer better insights into the performance of different
types of schools relative to one another (Lubienski & Lubienski, 2006). Once differences in location
and demographics were controlled, the study found that the fourth graders in charter schools
actually scored a statistically significant 4.4 points lower than public schools, but eight graders in
charter schools scored a statistically insignificant 2.4 points higher than public schools (Lubienski &

1.Do you feel that Karen is an independent contractor or an employee? What is your rationale for
this decision? The differentiation between an independent contractor and an employee is a critical
one for any employer to make. Furthermore, this choice can have significant implications for the
business regarding additional fees and taxes. In this situation, Karen was initially hired as a
temporary employee. Moreover, Karen has functioned as an independent contractor for 5 years. If

Furthermore, if no employer–employee relationship exists (regardless of what the relationship is
called), you are an independent contractor and Karen's earnings are generally subject to Medicare

question for all involved. Despite the fact that Karen was hired as a consultant acting independently
of the utility, she has been working within a relationship with the employer for a long period of time.
4.What are some potential legal implications in the case? What should the utility do to rectify any
wrongs in this situation? Challenges for the employer and the situation include the issues related to
government taxes such as Medicare and Social Security. In addition, the employer is bound to pay
reasonable benefits to all of its employees equally. If the utility does not do this, and it is determined
that Karen is an employee of the utility, and Karen is a legitimate case against the utility to recover
the lost benefits. To rectify this situation, the utility should clarify exactly what Karen's individual
situation is, and hopefully with the help of a tax advisor. The advisor may suggest that Karen's work
responsibilities be clearly delineated and that she be afforded the requisite benefits. Lastly, all
necessary taxes, including payroll amounts for charges such as Medicare and Social Security need to

Independent Contractors Introduction Independent contractors are hired and used for various
reasons by companies. Probably one of the main reason businesses hire independent contractors is
that it will save the company money in the long run. Independent contractors are not employees of
the company for which they are hired. They are ultimately hired to perform a service or provide a
good for a fee. The definition of a contractor,

A good independent contractor should have good networking skills. Most independent contractors
use subcontractors to complete the job. By having good networking skills, independent contractors
are able to hire subcontractors that are able to come in and help the project progress at a much faster
pace and ultimately finish the job on time. Most would say reliability is the most important trait of
all. When companies hire independent contractors they hope that the contractors is very reliable.
Reliable in the sense that they are able to meet all the requirement and deadlines outlined in the
contract. If companies have concerns about the reliability of an independent contractor, they should
move on to another contractor because in the long haul the job will not get accomplished which will
lead to headaches in the future. Competitive pricing is also important when selecting a contractor.
Hiring a contractor because of price is not always the best practice. Deciding which price to go with
can be a challenging task when it comes to hiring a contractor. According to Murphy (2009), "the
sellers wants to make as much money as possible and the buyer wants to save as much as possible".
When companies receive quotes from contractors that are extremely low or high those could be red
flags. Extremely low could mean that the

Habermas Theory Of The Public Sphere
Having examined and defined mass media and the contemporary democracy it is important however
to consider Habermas' theory of the public sphere.
Habermas defines the public sphere as "a realm of our social life in which something approaching
public opinion can be formed." "Access is guaranteed to all citizens" (1974, p.49). It is Habermas
theory that the public sphere helps to facilitate the rational communication of public affairs
independently from the government and state.
Similar to the paragraphs on the mass media and contemporary democracies Habermas himself
backs up the point of the mass media negatively affecting the democracy.
He argues that commercialised media in the new public sphere have turned the public sphere into a
place where advertising is prioritised (Habermas, Lennox and Lennox 1974). A point that backs this
theory up is the way the mass media influences television in a political way, as it is deteriorating the
public sphere (Hart,1994). This opinion is key in the context of explaining the public sphere theory
as it helps to highlight a key point in the modern democracy.
Harts opinion highlights one of the main tools of influence within the mass media, news
organisations influence the audiences view point through what they broadcast on their television
channels.
(Quoted in Papacharissi, 2010, p.232) Habermas (2004) suggests that "main stream media content
have colonized the public sphere and compromised rational and democratic public discourse." This

dependent variable. A change in the independent variable directly causes a change in the dependent
variable, and you can only have one independent variable. The independent variable is the behavior
of one participant that triggers the behavior of another participant. In the first study, the alcoholic
beverage and conversation topic selected by Participant #1 is the independent variable. In the second
study, the behavior of the seller at the store is the independent variable, as is the verbal and
nonverbal communication of some participants in the third study.
A dependent variable is what you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the
experiment. The dependent variable responds to the independent variable. It is called dependent
because it "depends" on the independent variable. In a scientific experiment, you cannot have a
dependent variable without an independent variable. In the first study, the response of the second
person to order the drink and take part in the ongoing conversation is the dependent variable. In the
second study, the dependent variable is the mannerisms with which the customer responds to the
seller. In the third study, the dependent variables are the response of the people in the "in–group",
and the response of the people in the "out–group". You can have more than one dependent variable,
but you can only have one independent variable; in the

The Independent Record Labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s
The Independent Record Labels of the 1950's and 1960's History of Music Production Eric Eller
Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, a wave of new musical movements by independent record labels
and new artists emerged in the United States. This movement is captured in the stories of those label
creators and owners, and in the turbulent journey through their successes and failures. The first
emergence was fueled by multiple factors: competitive economic circumstances, up–and–coming
local musical talent in conjunction with the independent labels and studio owners, and the
commercially viable musical interest and curiosity of consumers in these local artists. An article
poses another causative factor that makes sense: when rock and roll ... Show more content on

Philips would take a while to realize that a huge prospect was about to enter his life and studio. Elvis
Presley, a young truck driver, had come in to record two songs at a cost of $8 as a birthday present
for his mother. Philips was actually out of the office so his secretary Marion Keisker recorded
Presley. Foreseeing talent, Keisker put aside a copy of the acetate master. Keisker continued to
advocate to Philips the idea of investing in Presley's commercially promising musical potential.
Philips eventually agreed to give Presley a try and matched him up with local guitarist Scotty Moore
and bass player Bill Black. This group became quite successful, and together, under the direction of
Philips, helped to influence and redefine the 'rockabilly' genre of music at the time. It shows Sun's
success that by '61, Phillips was able to buy a Presto 900–P recorder. Elvis Presley's presence at the
label allowed Philips to once again upgrade his system, this time opting for a Tube 76–D broadcast
console and two new Ampex 350 tape recorders. The growing sophistication of his studio rig is a
testimony to the success that he accomplished with such sensations as Presley. He delayed one tape
head slightly in relation to the other, which made the signature "Sun Sound." While Philips did find
success for a while with artist Elvis Presley; Elvis' popularity outgrew the facilities and financial
capabilities of Sun

The Effects Of Mass Media And Communication On The Society
Media Message
Introduction
Behavioral sciences play a central role in figuring out the likely effect of mass media and
communication in the society. Different theories and approaches are used to figure this out. This
study refers to the Uses and Gratifications, and Cultivation theories to consider the effect of the
media article below on individuals. The uses and gratification theory argues that consumers of a
given media uses this media to satisfy and fulfill specific desires and needs. On the other hand,
cultivation theory holds that heavy exposure to a certain media can cause an individual to have an
illusory perception of the life reality based on the most consistent and repetitive message that is
given in this media (Fourie, 2011).

How Does Technology Affect Independent Films
How has the role of technology affected independent films and their film–making process?
The distribution of film has changed phenomenally during the last 10 years. Independent film is an
area of production where filmmakers produce their films independently, outside of the studio
system. Many argue that cultural value is taken from independent films whereas commercial
releases follow the same narrative structure. Often, mainstream cinema will follow a common
narrative arc which fits into the equilibrium theory e.g. Protagonist is faced with a challenge, a stage
of disequilibrium occurs, equilibrium is restored and the film has a traditional happy ending.
Independent film's niche audiences enjoy the creative freedom that comes with genre. This freedom
has been extended by new technology, giving filmmakers the ability to fulfil their artistic vision.
Advances in technical equipment have benefitted the film–making process for independent
directors, who are now able to create high quality films on a low budget. In addition to advances in
technical equipment, social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Pros And Cons Of Independent Movies
In recent years, the film industry has drastically changed. I remember when I was little, I thought
independent films and documentaries were weird things that only hippies watched. Now, more and
more people adore independent films. Although indie flicks do not have the budget of blockbuster
films, they do have a unique chance to explore what lies beyond Hollywood norms. Instead of the
same directors and mangers deciding what will entertain the masses, these videos allow creators to
reach a more–targeted audience. For example, one may make a video about the bad conditions of
meat factories and share it on Facebook among vegetarian groups. A movie that narrow in audience
would never reach it to the theaters. Also, independent movies explore what makes a movie "good"
and defy the cutter–cookie plots of major pictures. One particularly great, acclaimed indie movie
was The Babadook. This movie had a very slow build and an unsettling ending, both of which are
not common in megamovies. The norms of television shows are being tested as well. Similarly to
HBO, Netflix produces content of its own instead of relying on television networks. This freedom
lets it create controversial material, such as a show called Dear White People. The company
describes the show as a journey of "students of color [who] navigate the daily slights and slippery
politics of life at an Ivy League college that's not nearly as 'post–racial' as it thinks." One can
imagine that popular networks, such as Fox and

Independent Record Label Essay
The Music Industry has been a constant in the hearts of fans and the general public for years. During
those years, music companies were ran a certain way that may have seemed successful for a while.
Everything changed when Independent Record Labels were created. Music was revolutionized when
the effects of Independent Record Labels took place, when Atlantic Records was created, and when
founders, producers, and artists worked together to create a viable business and music outlet. Music
was indeed revolutionized when the effects of Independent Record Labels took place. Atlantic

In 1947, Atlantic Records was created by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson in New York City
(Callahan and Edwards). This would end up being one of the biggest and most important
achievements in music history. As discussed in the previous paragraph, Atlantic Records was able to
incorporate many different kinds of genres into their label making them unique compared to their
competitors. Callahan and Edwards describe the jazz musicians that they had as "giants", such as
Lester Young and Sidney Bechet. The fact that they were able to have connections with these
"giants" shows that from the start, they appealed to the big stars and I believe this showed they were
destined for stardom. Atlantic Records also produced multiple #1 hits in the R&B category in the
1950's (Callahan and Edwards). In the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's, Atlantic Records
created many big soul hits as well (Callahan and Edwards). This record company was able to do it
all. Another big time period was from 1953–1955 when pop artists started to cover R&B songs
(Callahan and Edwards). Atlantic Records was able to jump on this new trend and this became a big
part of their success and continued fame (Callahan and Edwards). The ability to capitalize on market
trends is important in all facets of business and Atlantic Record showed that they were smart in
running the business. Atlantic Records had a great relationship

Third Parties in American Politics: Playing Spoiler in a...
It's hard to imagine a period in American political history that hasn't been dominated by a duopoly
of political parties. Even though resistance from the founding fathers on the issue of political parties
is well documented, the two–party system we are well accustomed to developed shortly after the
emergence of the United States as an independent nation. Whether it was the Federalist/Democratic–
Republican system in the late 18th and early 19th centuries or the Democratic/Republican system
we know today, two ideologically opposite parties have always maintained dominant control of the
American political system. The existence of third parties and independent candidates, therefore,
complicates the political system that we have used for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to avoid losing voters to third parties, the two major parties are often forced to adopt
positions championed by third parties. To fully comprehend why third parties exist, it is important to
first be able to identify the numerous challenges they face in order to gain any sense of credibility.
In order to participate in major elections, third parties must first overcome a myriad of obstacles that
have been put in place by both the founding fathers and politicians of our current two–party system.
Rosenstone and his colleagues contend that the most important barrier in place to discourage the
success of third parties is the plurality single–member districts that are the cornerstone of the
American electoral process. Not only do single–member districts elect only one member to higher
office, but they also allow such elections to occur without an electoral majority. If voters know that a
third party is unlikely to receive a substantial amount of votes, they may believe a vote for the party
would be a wasted vote. This requirement for a plurality of votes is especially detrimental for a third
party presidential campaign, due to the fact that the Electoral College distributes electoral votes to
the winner of each statewide vote (excluding Nebraska and Maine), and the only plausible way for a
third party candidate to receive any electoral votes is to be extremely popular in a certain region of
the United States. Unlike the two major

Independent Film Industries Reinforce The Global Construction Of The Hybrid Genre
Almost every country has its own film industry. Films are being produced across the world, from the
low budget gangster films of Britain's "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and Australia's
"Chopper" to the French 'art cinema' of "L'aventura" and the German action offering of "Run Lola
Run". This is of course to exclude America. Hollywood is the center of the global film industry and
it can be considered impossible to gain international superstardom without passing through its

This Saussurian[2] idea, that meaning of one thing can change by its surrounding text, can be
identified within the Romantic Comedy genre. In British 'RomComs' such as "Jack and Sarah" a
grainy filter is used on the camera to add a gritty realism and lead characters are often faulted and
possibly not as beautiful as their Hollywood counterparts in, say, "Jerry Maguire" where glossy
superstars who are destined to be together discover their love in expensive settings, such as the
recreated American Football game in "Jerry Maguire". These differing conventions from separate
film industries are still considered part of the RomCom genre.
A possible explanation of this could be their different target audiences. British audiences can relate
to clumsy, embarrassed lead characters falling in love in the rain as this is considered 'typically
British'. Such stereotypes reveal the structuralist nature of society. Balanced narratives and order do
not exist in real life. In the same vein, nationality does not dictate personality. Yet media has
developed such indexical representations i.e. clumsy is a sign of British (Hugh Grant in "Four
Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill"), and implanted them in film. These intrinsic meanings,
as Bazin[3] articulated, allow for rapid communication of meaning. Equally, the American audience
has an array of TV channels, including the big budget

Overview
What is an Independent Broker– Dealer?
Broker–dealers are specialized financial services companies that trade securities for their own
account or on behalf of their customers. Broker–dealers are regulated under the Securities Exchange
Act by the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), a unit of the US government. Some regulatory
authority is further delegated to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a self–
regulatory organization. Many states also regulate broker–dealers under separate state securities
laws known as "blue sky" laws.
The IBD business model focuses on comprehensive financial planning services and unbiased
investment advice. IBD firms also share a number of other similar business characteristics. They
generally clear their securities business on a fully disclosed basis; primarily engage in the sale of
packaged products, such as mutual funds and variable insurance products; take a comprehensive
approach to their clients' financial goals and objectives; and provide investment advisory services
through either affiliated registered investment adviser firms or such firms owned by their financial
advisor.

powerful suppliers. Consequently, due to this downturn, the weaker manufacturers exit the industry
and the remaining manufacturers gain market shares and become more powerful which create a

An option to turn these threats into opportunities could be to manage to set–up agreements with
smaller shoe manufacturers. The manufacturers' activity would be sustain by producing some on–

Pros and Cons of Indie Films

  • 1. The Pros And Cons Of Independent Movies In recent years, the film industry has changed drastically. When I was younger, I thought independent films and documentaries were weird things that only hippies watched. Now, more and more people adore independent films. Although indie movies do not have the budget of blockbuster films, they have a unique chance to explore what lies beyond Hollywood norms. Instead of the same directors and managers deciding what should entertain the masses, regular people can become creators and reach their own targeted audience. For example, one could make a video about the harsh conditions of meat factories and share it on Facebook among vegetarian groups. A movie that narrow in audience would never reach it to the theaters. Also, independent movies explore what makes a movie "good" and defy cutter–cookie plots. One particularly great acclaimed independent movie is The Babadook. This film had a very slow build and an unsettling ending, both of which are not common in most movies. The norms of television shows are being tested as well. Similarly to HBO, Netflix produces content of its own instead of relying solely on television networks. This freedom lets it create controversial material, such as a show called Dear White People. The company describes the show as a journey of "students of color [who] navigate the daily slights and slippery politics of life at an Ivy League college that's not nearly as 'post–racial' as it thinks." Popular networks, such as Fox and AMC, would be leery of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Effects of Living in a Foreign Country Essay Living away from your country can be a really interesting and unforgettable experience, but at the same time it has very important effects on one's life. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the three main effects that living in another country can produce in your personal life. The major effect, and also a very common one, is that once you start a regular life away from home, you miss everything. This fact doesn't mean that you are unhappy but that you are aware of being on your own. Missing your family and the attention they all paid to you is a very usual thing to do. Little details like sitting on a Sunday morning watching TV alone instead of helping your dad organizing his things or having a nice chat with your mom makes you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's obvious then that you have started to appreciate everything you had back where you belong. The second main effect would be learning how to accept another type of society and culture into your daily life. Since you are living in a place with different customs and traditions from yours, you have to be able to develop yourself in unknown conditions. This means making new friends, learning other points of view, accepting different opinions and values, and seizing every opportunity you have to go to new places. Therefore, you'll be able to achieve true knowledge. Suggesting to change your mind totally or to be square minded would be foolish; the best thing to do would be to stick to your most important values and, according to them, change those that you believe could be improved. The most significant effect of living away from home is the independent behavior that grows inside of you. Living on your own far from your family gives you a lot of experiences toward organizing your life. Since it is up to you and no one else to go to school, clean your room, wash your clothes, and organize your expenses, it is predictable that you will have a good and strong meaning of responsibility. Being independent and responsible will help you get through life every goal you want to achieve. Living far from home, even for a short period of time, can be really hard at the beginning. We have to remember that all changes are difficult, but they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Compare And Contrast Independent And Independent Parties The United States government is mainly divided into two political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, with other little parties beginning to branch out. The issues with the two main parties is how opposite they are on everything. Whether it is the belief on taxes or abortion the Democrats and the Republicans can never agree, therefore looking towards the Independent Party is the way to make the United States government stronger. Declaring Independent gives someone the right to pick and choose who they support based off their own views not just based off of the core values of one party. The Independent Party best suits the United States because of its diverse beliefs and openness to vote for any leader that they choose. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A citizen of the United States is guaranteed the right to life, liberty and property in both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. The Independent Party believes that it is the government's responsibility to protect these rights, this is important because without those rights life in the United States would be vastly different. Along with protecting citizens rights to liberty the Independent party believe that private organizations have the right to determine their own membership, employment and volunteers based on their own beliefs. The Independent party also opposes legislation "that allows the federal government to suspend our God–given Rights or that prevents the people from suing government agents for violating citizens' civil or fundamental rights during times of war, natural disasters, national emergencies, or declarations of martial law, etc." In regards to the right to property the Independent Party believes that it is unconstitutional to deprive a citizen of their right to property through ... • 13. Independent Music's Influence On The Development Of... INTRODUCTION This essay will be looking at Independent music in relation to the categorisation of distribution and production. It will also discuss the impact with regard to the development of musical performances and production. Originally, Independent music referred to bands or artists who performed and/or produced music autonomously and without the commercial rules and restrictions associated with major record labels (Hale, 2014). Throughout the years Independent music has evolved into a broader meaning that is harder to define. Today, the term "Indie" is used to describe a genre of music and is often used as a prefix to another genre such as Indie–Rock and Indie–Folk. So what is Indie music? And how did Indie evolve to become a genre? BRIEF HISTORY OF EARLY INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS 'Independent record labels have been around since music started being recorded' (King, 2012, p.13). Created by fanatics with a passion for music, the recording and production process was often self–funded and the purpose was to nurture talent and creativity. Most of the major record companies we know today would have once started in this manner (King, 2012). As far back as 1917 independent record labels were recording early Blues and Jazz music. In 1920 following the end of World War 1 (WW1), Brunswick became known as the biggest independent label in the USA. Due to financial problems, Brunswick went into receivership in 1930 and was bought out by Warner Brothers who are still one of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Department Of Labor Has Issued New Guidance On... BACKGROUND: The Department of Labor has issued new guidance on differentiating between employees and independent contractors. ISSUE: Issue #1: How does the new DOL guidance change the way in which employers classify employees and independent contractors? CONCLUSION: Issue #1: The DOL has now rejected the common law control test utilized by the IRS and adopted the economic realities test, saying that most workers are considered employees under the FLSA's broad definition. APPLICABLE LAW: The DOL defines employ as "to suffer or permit to work" and has adopted the "economic realities" test to determine whether an individual is an employee or an independent contractor. This test focuses on whether the worker is economically dependent on the employer or legitimately in business for himself (herself). This test involves six factors, but the DOL notes that they "should not be applied in a mechanical fashion" but instead with an understanding that the factors are indicators of economic dependence. Courts have noted that the "suffer or permit" standard ensures as "broad of a scope of statutory coverage as possible" and this broad coverage is essential to accomplish the Act's goal. This definition means that an individual is dependent upon finding employment in the business of others, whereas independent contractors are those workers with economic independence who are operating their own business. The six factors under the "Economic Realities" test are as follows: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Progressive Independent Party Analysis With Hillary Clinton's recent self–proclamation of "securing" the Democratic nomination, along with the heated 2016 presidential election, has come an Independent, Progressive political movement, with citizens calling for action against a system widely believed to have failed them. "It's time to finally have a vibrant, exciting, VIABLE third party in this country, a place where many of us who feel disenfranchised; Progressives, Greens, Democratic Socialists, Independents, and frustrated Democrats and Republicans alike, can feel empowered in the promise of democracy in our country," says Araquel Bloss, founder of the Progressive Independent Party. The Party began simply as an online petition written by Ms. Bloss, which quickly went viral after co–founder Steve Poikonen wrote an article and published it on The Morning Nightcap. Mr. Poikonen states, "Her vision was simple, eloquent, and absolutely right the hell on time: Let's build a coalition of Democrats and Progressives who feel their party has left them in the wilderness. Let's bring in the Green Party folks who have worked so hard for so long only to find themselves locked out of the national conversation. Let's bring in Independents who ... "We will continue to ask Progressives of all parties and left–leaning Independents to unite with the Progressive Independent Party to build the largest Progressive voting bloc in history. Analysis Of Richard 's ' Black Boy ' Black Boy Essay Analyse the process through which Richard becomes independent and highlight your observations through judicious textual references which capture the power of Wright 's narrative style. This novel focuses on the struggle for identity of a young black boy in the Deep South. It is a powerful testament of his life. In this novel, Wright uses writing to free himself from the prejudice he is constantly facing, gradually he find that writing allows him to explore new ideas and expand his imagination, not only this, but Wright discovers through self realisation that he faces a need to write in order to break out from the constraining world of race, religion and family. Throughout his life, Richard faces the need for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Richard 's mother on the other hand, could be considered a much better role model for him. She forces him to fight back when he feels people are being unjust towards him, she teaches him to be a fighter, for instance, when he is beaten and the grocery shopping money is continuously taken from him, his mother simply reacts by giving him a stick and telling him ‘‘If these boys bother you, then fight. ' ' She tries to make him tough and independent because she feels that this is the only way he can survive. Richard is often disciplined through the church and religion through his grandmother and his mother. At moments he is very close to being pulled–in by religion. ‘ 'While listening to the vivid language of the sermons I was pulled towards emotional belief, but as soon as I went out of the church and saw the bright sunshine and felt the throbbing life of the people in the streets I knew that none of it was true and that nothing would happen. ' ' This quote shows how non–easily influenced he is, how he does not feel the need to agree with others just so that he can fit–in. Because he refuses the church, his grandmother brands him as a sinner who will send the entire household to hell. His aunt Addie, who teaches him religious class at one point, goes as far as using him as an example to the class of ‘ 'a sinner. ' ' His independence is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Effects Of Pecs On Manding And Speech Development For... Another study by Tincani, Crozier, and Alazetta (2006) looked at the effects of PECS on manding and speech development for school–aged children. The study had two different parts, the first study involved two children with ASD, and the study wanted to increase the amount of independent manding, displayed when a child exchanges a picture symbol for an object without prompting. The researchers followed the PECS guidelines in a delayed multiple baseline design study, where participant one was taught phases I–IV of PECS and participant two was taught phases I and II of PECS. Both participants greatly increased their independent manding over the course of the study, especially as they advanced through the phases of PECS. Participant two required more than twice as many sessions as participant one to meet the acquisition criteria for phases I and II and therefore did not have the opportunity to learn subsequent phases before the experiment ended. Participant two did not use any measurable speech during the study and therefore was not used for study two. Participant one demonstrated only vocal approximations (vocalization that was clearly not the name of the item the participant was manding) instead of word vocalization and participant two did not use any measurable speech during the study. Therefore, neither participant qualified to participate in the second part of the study. (Tincani, Crozier, & Alazetta, 2006). The second part of the study performed by Tincani, Crozier, and ... • 33. Hiring Independent Contractors Engaging independent contractors can be beneficial to employers in various aspects especially to small business owners. Although hiring independent contractors require higher pay, employers are more likely to save money by doing so. Because when businesses hire them, they may not be eligible for benefits such as health insurance or paid for taking time off work, they are not provided coverage by the worker's compensation insurance, and they will be responsible for submitting their own income taxes. In addition, it also lowers the administrative costs because payroll taxes, CPP and EI do not have to be withheld or remitted. Hiring independent contractors would lead to losing some control over your workers since employers cannot control how they perform their task because you can't closely monitor their work, unlike employees. You can guide them to how you want a particular job to be done, but usually they will run their business their way. Since they enjoy autonomy to decide how to do the job at their best for which they have been hired. (Forbes, 2006) Independent contractors are hired as a short–term worker, which means that they might not be working with the same company for another project the next time. Since, they usually operate on a first come, first serve basis, which can become inconvenient and disruptive for employers if they want to work with the same contractor for all of their projects. In addition, different contractors may perform their job in a different manner, which can lead to various results from each contractor. Therefore, hiring employees would be a better option for such employers. Another disadvantage is that because they are freelancers and work with various employers, they would only focus on promoting their brands but not the employers. Furthermore, when an employee is injured at the workplace, employers use the worker's compensation insurance program to compensate for the injuries so that employees do not sue them for the damages. Ralph Nader’s Life Lesson in The Seventeen Traditions Ralph Nader's book, The Seventeen Traditions, discusses several traditions, seventeen in total, which the author learned from his parents, siblings, and other individuals in the community and draws certain inspiring life lessons for the current society. The book is genially human and full of sensory chronicles. Through the key traditions outlined in the book, Nader looks back at his Lebanese background and childhood experiences that directly shaped his worldview. This review analyses some of the most significant traditions in the book such as family table, independent thinking, health, and business. These key traditions will also be vital in discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the book. Nader's book has really achieved its principal purpose, which is to educate the society on some of the values and traditions that are vital in shaping a person's life. Through his key seventeen traditions, the author has succeeded in creating a modern–day fable on how one can grow from a child to a responsible and successful adult. Nader's tradition of the family table proves to be the most significant base in a child's education. The author reveals that the family table provided an ideal place in which his parents taught him and his siblings respect and manners. To the author, most of the historical and cultural topics together with various proverbs were discussed at the family table. This tradition has some connections with my childhood experiences. Government-Funded Independent Schools Essays An analysis of charter schools – government–funded independent schools that offer either a special theme or are required to meet a particular performance indicator (Davies & Guppy, 2006) – as an alternative to mainstream public education reveals that charter schools should be notnot be supported for several reasons. First, in terms of academic performance, there is little evidence that charter school students fare better than public school students (Murphy, 2003). Second, as new providers of education, advocates claim charter schools bring innovative and fresh new thinking to schooling practices (Davies & Guppy, 2006), but research has found there is weak evidence to support such a claim. Finally, proponents of charter schools and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is opposed to the one–size–fits–all approach of the public education system (Davies & Guppy, 2006). Consequently, student learning and performance should increase. However, there is little evidence to support this claim; studies have found that improvements in learning are not significant and are similar to the achievement gains in regular public schools (Murphy, 2003). The absence of an alleged increase in academic achievement in charter schools compared to public schools is further supported by a study on the results of the 2003 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) mathematics exam in the U.S. The study compared the math scores of 190,000 fourth graders and 153,000 eight graders students from 13,577 public, private and charter schools (Lubienski & Lubienski, 2006). As opposed to reading, math is more influenced by school than home experiences and thus, math scores offer better insights into the performance of different types of schools relative to one another (Lubienski & Lubienski, 2006). Once differences in location and demographics were controlled, the study found that the fourth graders in charter schools actually scored a statistically significant 4.4 points lower than public schools, but eight graders in charter schools scored a statistically insignificant 2.4 points higher than public schools (Lubienski & Lubienski, 2006). The differentiation between an independent contractor and an employee is a critical one for any employer to make. Moreover, Karen has functioned as an independent contractor for 5 years. Despite the fact that Karen was hired as a consultant acting independently of the utility, she has been working within a relationship with the employer for a long period of time. 4.What are some potential legal implications in the case? What should the utility do to rectify any wrongs in this situation? Challenges for the employer and the situation include the issues related to government taxes such as Medicare and Social Security. In addition, the employer is bound to pay reasonable benefits to all of its employees equally. If the utility does not do this, and it is determined that Karen is an employee of the utility, and Karen is a legitimate case against the utility to recover the lost benefits. To rectify this situation, the utility should clarify exactly what Karen's individual situation is, and hopefully with the help of a tax advisor. A Brief Note On The Independent Contractors Organizations Gregory Long June 4, 2015 ACM 395 (Pricing) Professor Adina Peyton Independent Contractors Introduction Independent contractors are hired and used for various reasons by companies. Probably one of the main reason businesses hire independent contractors is that it will save the company money in the long run. Independent contractors are not employees of the company for which they are hired. They are ultimately hired to perform a service or provide a good for a fee. By having good networking skills, independent contractors are able to hire subcontractors that are able to come in and help the project progress at a much faster pace and ultimately finish the job on time. Most would say reliability is the most important trait of all. When companies hire independent contractors they hope that the contractors is very reliable. Reliable in the sense that they are able to meet all the requirement and deadlines outlined in the contract. If companies have concerns about the reliability of an independent contractor, they should move on to another contractor because in the long haul the job will not get accomplished which will lead to headaches in the future. Competitive pricing is also important when selecting a contractor. Hiring a contractor because of price is not always the best practice. Deciding which price to go with can be a challenging task when it comes to hiring a contractor. • 77. Habermas Theory Of The Public Sphere Having examined and defined mass media and the contemporary democracy it is important however to consider Habermas' theory of the public sphere. Habermas defines the public sphere as "a realm of our social life in which something approaching public opinion can be formed." "Access is guaranteed to all citizens" (1974, p.49). It is Habermas theory that the public sphere helps to facilitate the rational communication of public affairs independently from the government and state. Similar to the paragraphs on the mass media and contemporary democracies Habermas himself backs up the point of the mass media negatively affecting the democracy. He argues that commercialised media in the new public sphere have turned the public sphere into a place where advertising is prioritised (Habermas, Lennox and Lennox 1974). A point that backs this theory up is the way the mass media influences television in a political way, as it is deteriorating the public sphere (Hart,1994). This opinion is key in the context of explaining the public sphere theory as it helps to highlight a key point in the modern democracy. Harts opinion highlights one of the main tools of influence within the mass media, news organisations influence the audiences view point through what they broadcast on their television channels. (Quoted in Papacharissi, 2010, p.232) Habermas (2004) suggests that "main stream media content have colonized the public sphere and compromised rational and democratic public discourse." This ... A change in the independent variable directly causes a change in the dependent variable, and you can only have one independent variable. The independent variable is the behavior of one participant that triggers the behavior of another participant. In the first study, the alcoholic beverage and conversation topic selected by Participant #1 is the independent variable. In the second study, the behavior of the seller at the store is the independent variable, as is the verbal and nonverbal communication of some participants in the third study. A dependent variable is what you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the experiment. The dependent variable responds to the independent variable. It is called dependent because it "depends" on the independent variable. In a scientific experiment, you cannot have a dependent variable without an independent variable. In the first study, the response of the second person to order the drink and take part in the ongoing conversation is the dependent variable. In the second study, the dependent variable is the mannerisms with which the customer responds to the seller. This movement is captured in the stories of those label creators and owners, and in the turbulent journey through their successes and failures. The first emergence was fueled by multiple factors: competitive economic circumstances, up–and–coming local musical talent in conjunction with the independent labels and studio owners, and the commercially viable musical interest and curiosity of consumers in these local artists. Elvis Presley, a young truck driver, had come in to record two songs at a cost of $8 as a birthday present for his mother. Keisker continued to advocate to Philips the idea of investing in Presley's commercially promising musical potential. The Effects Of Mass Media And Communication On The Society Media Message Introduction Behavioral sciences play a central role in figuring out the likely effect of mass media and communication in the society. Different theories and approaches are used to figure this out. This study refers to the Uses and Gratifications, and Cultivation theories to consider the effect of the media article below on individuals. The uses and gratification theory argues that consumers of a given media uses this media to satisfy and fulfill specific desires and needs. On the other hand, cultivation theory holds that heavy exposure to a certain media can cause an individual to have an illusory perception of the life reality based on the most consistent and repetitive message that is given in this media (Fourie, 2011). • 97. How Does Technology Affect Independent Films How has the role of technology affected independent films and their film–making process? The distribution of film has changed phenomenally during the last 10 years. Independent film is an area of production where filmmakers produce their films independently, outside of the studio system. Many argue that cultural value is taken from independent films whereas commercial releases follow the same narrative structure. Often, mainstream cinema will follow a common narrative arc which fits into the equilibrium theory e.g. Protagonist is faced with a challenge, a stage of disequilibrium occurs, equilibrium is restored and the film has a traditional happy ending. Independent film's niche audiences enjoy the creative freedom that comes with genre. This freedom has been extended by new technology, giving filmmakers the ability to fulfil their artistic vision. • 101. The Pros And Cons Of Independent Movies In recent years, the film industry has drastically changed. I remember when I was little, I thought independent films and documentaries were weird things that only hippies watched. Now, more and more people adore independent films. Although indie flicks do not have the budget of blockbuster films, they do have a unique chance to explore what lies beyond Hollywood norms. Instead of the same directors and mangers deciding what will entertain the masses, these videos allow creators to reach a more–targeted audience. For example, one may make a video about the bad conditions of meat factories and share it on Facebook among vegetarian groups. A movie that narrow in audience would never reach it to the theaters. Also, independent movies explore what makes a movie "good" and defy the cutter–cookie plots of major pictures. One particularly great, acclaimed indie movie was The Babadook. This movie had a very slow build and an unsettling ending, both of which are not common in megamovies. The norms of television shows are being tested as well. Similarly to HBO, Netflix produces content of its own instead of relying on television networks. This freedom lets it create controversial material, such as a show called Dear White People. The company describes the show as a journey of "students of color [who] navigate the daily slights and slippery politics of life at an Ivy League college that's not nearly as 'post–racial' as it thinks." In 1947, Atlantic Records was created by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson in New York City (Callahan and Edwards). This would end up being one of the biggest and most important achievements in music history. As discussed in the previous paragraph, Atlantic Records was able to incorporate many different kinds of genres into their label making them unique compared to their competitors. Callahan and Edwards describe the jazz musicians that they had as "giants", such as Lester Young and Sidney Bechet. The fact that they were able to have connections with these "giants" shows that from the start, they appealed to the big stars and I believe this showed they were destined for stardom. Atlantic Records also produced multiple #1 hits in the R&B category in the 1950's (Callahan and Edwards). In the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's, Atlantic Records created many big soul hits as well (Callahan and Edwards). This record company was able to do it all. Another big time period was from 1953–1955 when pop artists started to cover R&B songs (Callahan and Edwards). Atlantic Records was able to jump on this new trend and this became a big part of their success and continued fame (Callahan and Edwards). The ability to capitalize on market trends is important in all facets of business and Atlantic Record showed that they were smart in running the business. • 117. Third Parties in American Politics: Playing Spoiler in a... It's hard to imagine a period in American political history that hasn't been dominated by a duopoly of political parties. Even though resistance from the founding fathers on the issue of political parties is well documented, the two–party system we are well accustomed to developed shortly after the emergence of the United States as an independent nation. Whether it was the Federalist/Democratic– Republican system in the late 18th and early 19th centuries or the Democratic/Republican system we know today, two ideologically opposite parties have always maintained dominant control of the American political system. The existence of third parties and independent candidates, therefore, complicates the political system that we have used for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to avoid losing voters to third parties, the two major parties are often forced to adopt positions championed by third parties. To fully comprehend why third parties exist, it is important to first be able to identify the numerous challenges they face in order to gain any sense of credibility. In order to participate in major elections, third parties must first overcome a myriad of obstacles that have been put in place by both the founding fathers and politicians of our current two–party system. Rosenstone and his colleagues contend that the most important barrier in place to discourage the success of third parties is the plurality single–member districts that are the cornerstone of the American electoral process. Not only do single–member districts elect only one member to higher office, but they also allow such elections to occur without an electoral majority. If voters know that a third party is unlikely to receive a substantial amount of votes, they may believe a vote for the party would be a wasted vote. This requirement for a plurality of votes is especially detrimental for a third party presidential campaign, due to the fact that the Electoral College distributes electoral votes to the winner of each statewide vote (excluding Nebraska and Maine), and the only plausible way for a third party candidate to receive any electoral votes is to be extremely popular in a certain region of the United States. Films are being produced across the world, from the low budget gangster films of Britain's "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and Australia's "Chopper" to the French 'art cinema' of "L'aventura" and the German action offering of "Run Lola Run". This is of course to exclude America. Hollywood is the center of the global film industry and it can be considered impossible to gain international superstardom without passing through its coiffured gates. This Saussurian[2] idea, that meaning of one thing can change by its surrounding text, can be identified within the Romantic Comedy genre. In British 'RomComs' such as "Jack and Sarah" a grainy filter is used on the camera to add a gritty realism and lead characters are often faulted and possibly not as beautiful as their Hollywood counterparts in, say, "Jerry Maguire" where glossy superstars who are destined to be together discover their love in expensive settings, such as the recreated American Football game in "Jerry Maguire". These differing conventions from separate film industries are still considered part of the RomCom genre. A possible explanation of this could be their different target audiences. British audiences can relate to clumsy, embarrassed lead characters falling in love in the rain as this is considered 'typically British'. Such stereotypes reveal the structuralist nature of society. Balanced narratives and order do not exist in real life. In the same vein, nationality does not dictate personality. Yet media has developed such indexical representations i.e. clumsy is a sign of British (Hugh Grant in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill"), and implanted them in film. These intrinsic meanings, as Bazin[3] articulated, allow for rapid communication of meaning. Equally, the American audience has an array of TV channels, including the big budget ... Sexual Behavior Analysis Paper Measures: The independent measure in the study is the PrEP treatment while the dependent variable in the study is change in sexual behavior over the course of the study. The PrEP treatment will be given both of the comparison groups and will remain constant throughout the study. The purpose of the study is to measure any change in the two comparison groups between each period gap and overall at the end of the study. At each interval, the participants will go through a mixed methods research analysis of the change in their sexual behavior. They will complete a Semantic Differential scale and an interview with a researcher. During this process both quantitative and qualitative data will be collected; quantitative data from the scale that will be used to measure their sexual behavior and qualitative data from the interviews. The primary outcome measure will be the responses to the survey at each interval; if the participants either continued their original sexual behavior or if they have changed their sexual behavior to high risk or low risk. The survey responses will be used to calculate the change in behavior, and to determine if the change that occurs is statistically significant or not.
