3. Yeshiva University Cancer Research Project
Teaches Students Lab Skills
A prominent Jewish university in New York, YU offers students education in traditional Jewish
studies as well as exposure to cutting-edge disciplines like cancer research. Even involving high
school students in advanced research projects, YU recently selected three students from Yeshiva’s
preparatory school to participate in a summer-long cancer research project.

Teaches Students Lab Skills
Led by Dr. Sumanta Goswami, chair of YU’s biology department, the project allowed the high
school juniors to gain experience with laboratory research techniques. The students assisted YU
researchers with studying the cellular anomalies that make certain types of breast cancer spread
aggressively. The team used a technique called Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (QPCR)
to examine differences in gene expression. Over the long term, this type of research improves the
treatment of common cancers and increases patient survival rates.
