Darlene Ayers-Johnson draws on extensive experience in
areas ranging from government to nonprofit work. She has
held positions with the California Commission on the
Status of Women, the Department of General Services for
the State of California, and the General Services
Administration for the federal government. Darlene AyersJohnson also served for more than a decade on the board of
directors for the Bay Area Tumor Institute.

Located in Oakland, California, the Bay Area Tumor
Institute operates one of 47 research programs approved by
the National Cancer Institute and has earned a leading
place in the field of cancer research. The institute provides
an extensive range of research in the fields of cancer
therapy and prevention, including offering distinguished
clinical trials.

4. Bay Area Tumor Institute and
Tumor Tissue Network
The Bay Area Tumor Institute also administers the Tumor
Tissue Network. As the only adult cancer tissue collection
network located west of the Mississippi River, it provides an
important opportunity for qualified scientists to conduct
their research in the western United States. The network
obtains cancerous tissue and comparable normal tissue
only from approved applicants. Any collected tissue not
selected for studies at the institute may receive
international distribution through the Cooperative Human
Tissue Network.
