Targeted therapeutics are a new type of anti-cancer drug that impedes cancer growth by blocking specific molecules that promote cancer. Unlike chemotherapy, which affects both normal and cancerous cells, targeted therapies more precisely target only cancer-related molecules. They also have cytostatic properties that stop tumor cells from growing and spreading rather than killing cells. Multiple targeted therapies have been approved to treat certain cancers, with more still in clinical trials.
