PORNOGRAPHY
What is Pornography?
 Pornography: derived from Greek words porni
(“prostitute”) and graphein (“to write”) originally defined as
any work of art or literature depicting the life of
prostitutes.
 Oxford Dictionary Definition: printed or visual material
containing the explicit description or display of sexual
organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual arousal.
 The three factors of porn are...
1. media solely arouses and depicts penetration
2. there is little or no artistic merit
3. it is intended for consumption by third parties.
 Softcore pornography generally contains nudity or partial nudity in
sexually suggestive situations, but not explicit sexual activity,
sexual penetration or "extreme fetishism"
 Hardcore pornography contains graphic sexual activity and visible
penetration.
Pornography Defined Further
The Unique Aspects of Pornography
William M Struthers identifies a number of reasons
1. Internet porn offers extreme novelty
2. Unlike food and drugs, there are almost no physical limitations to
Internet porn consumption
3. With Internet porn one can escalate both with more novel “partners”
by viewing new and unusual genres
4. Unlike drugs and food, Internet porn doesn't eventually activate the
brain's natural aversion system
5. The age users start watching porn
Forms of Pornography
 Child Pornography: children and
teenagers under the age of consent of
18 years old.
 Teen Pornography: referred to as “Barely
Legal” young actors usually 18/19 years
old that perform sexually explicit acts in
in films.
 Mature: an example of this is MILF
“Mother’s I’d Like to F***” with women 25
years or older in the fantasy scenarios
with younger men.
Pornography Statistics
 Every second 28,258 users are watching pornography on
the internet and 2.5 billion pornographic emails are sent
 There are 1 billion pornographic webpages available
 Every second $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography
on the internet
 Every 39 minutes a new porn video is being created in
the United States
 About 200,000Americans are “porn addicts”
Pornography Statistics Continued…
 Average age of first view of pornography is nine years old
 Teenagers with frequent exposure to sexual content on
TV have a substantially greater likelihood of teenage
pregnancy
 Pornography viewing by teens disorients them during the
developmental phase
 A significant relationship also exist teens between
frequent pornography use and feelings of loneliness,
including major depression.
History of Pornography
Past Pornography Use
 Paleolithic people drew pornographic
pictures in walls and crafted carvings
out of wood and stone.
 Figurines crafted for sexual arousal
 Greeks and Romans created public
sculptures and frescos of sexual
scenes.
 Ancient Peru painted sexual scenes
on ceramic pottery known as moche
ceramics that represented the most
detailed account of sexual customs
ever left by ancient people
Past Pornography Use Continued...
The Sexual Revolution
 Definition: The significant loosening of sexual
prescriptions that took place during the latter
part of the century with a breaking from rigid
limits on sexual behavior and positive adjusting
to sexual attitudes away from condemnation
Present Pornography Use
 The porn industry is so profitable and widely
accessible and appealing making millions of dollars
each year.
 Technology has changed the varieties and means of
distribution of pornography.
What draws people to pornography today?
1. Respect
2. Relationship
3. Refuge
4. Reward
5. Revenge
6. Redemption
The Triple A Engine
 “Triple A engine” relates to sexual communication is a
concept that comes from online sexual activity.
 “Triple A” factors that make it so appealing are
1. Affordability- everyone has a smartphone, laptop, or
some access to internet. You can pull up anything within
10 seconds.
2. Accessibility- you can watch millions of videos for free
3. Anonymity-your identity is remained anonymous so
nobody will know
The Triple A Engine Purposes
 Allows for the communication in cybersex to be at its peak.
 This is due the fact it is relatively cheap, easy to access, and
is at no risk of your identity
 People are more willing to interact and tell experiences about
themselves because there is little to no risk.
 Sexual communication- allows people to be as sexually
promiscuous as they want without a lot of risk
 Gives individuals the opportunity to explore their sexual being
and others while allowing you to interact with others on an
interpersonal level.

Survey & Discussion
What are your thoughts on question #8 after hearing the
discussion on the legal system whether porn should be “opt
in”?
What do you think the first step should be or should there be
a change to limiting pornography on the internet?
Effects of Pornography on the Brain
Brain Effects of Pornography
 The brain cells get activated at the same time by
something you see or hear or smell and release
chemicals
 The chemicals help strengthen the connection between
those neurons
 Whenever the sequence of arousal and response is
activated, it forms a neurological memory
 The memory will influence future processing and
response to sexual cues
Brain Effects of Pornography II
 Porn floods the brain with dopamine
 Brain has fewer receptors from porn exposure
 The result is the porn doesn’t seem as arousing or
exciting and many users go hunting for more porn
 There is damage to the frontal lobe which affects
the individual’s logical problem solving and decision
making.
Brain Effects of Pornography on Adolescents
 Participation of the amygdala and other limbic structures
deals with sexual arousal
 This is associated with emotional appraisal of sexual
stimuli
 Salient stimuli attend satiation of appetitive reward at the
expense of delayed gratification
 The problem is these stimuli lack sufficient maturation and
integrity in frontal cortices
The Effects of Exposure to Pornography
Child
 victims of sexual violence sexual assault, rape, and molestation
 values and attitudes can be distorted views of human sexuality,
development and their personal identity
Woman & Man
 social anxiety, depression, low motivation and concentration
problems
 negative self-perceptions in terms of physical appearance and
sexual functioning
 the main difference is erectile dysfunction in men
 Rape, Aggression and Sexual Promiscuity
 Women are “sex objects”
 Child sex offenders are likely to view porn on a regular basis
Socialization Effects of Pornography
• Serious damage to the partner
• Porn emphasizes sex without complications
• Raises the expectation of how women should look
• Unrealistic standards
Socialization Effects of Pornography II
 The more the user watches porn the more they are
programmed how relationships should be
 The more porn a man was exposed to the more likely he
preferred women to be submissive and subordinate to
men
Socialization Effects of Pornography III
 Being exposed to porn even once can cause the user
to feel less in love with their significant other
 Less sex and satisfying sex between partners or no
sex at all
 Less satisfied with their partner’s appearance, sexual
performance and willingness to try new things
Socialization Effects of Pornography IV
 Due to lower sexual response many male porn users find
they cannot be sexually aroused enough to maintain an
erection
 Partner of the user fears telling anyone either because they
are embarrassed or afraid of being blamed
Socialization Effects of Pornography V
Socialization Effects for Adolescents
 Many teens have not had the opportunity to learn what a
healthy relationship looks like before porn starts teaching
its version
 Most teens have gained their sexual education from porn
What causes the addiction to pornography?
Correlation between Social Networks and Addiction
Benefits to Viewing Pornography
Discussion Questions
Do you think there are any benefits to watching
pornography?
Can there a right way to watch pornography?
Possible Benefits of Watching Pornography
 Watching porn together can create more relationship
intimacy
 The best sex happens when partners are on the same
page
 Watching porn together can help you find out what your
likes and dislikes are “safely.”
Therapeutic Pornography
 Some couples, even in a Christian context, seek
professional sex therapy help
 The professional will often display sex positions to give
the couple different options that they can try
 An illustrated picture (pencil drawing) of a couple having
sex may be better/therapeutic
 When you actually take a picture/video of a person
something changes
Discussion Question
 What do you think the difference is between art and porn?
 Is it really possible to define “art”?
The Difference Between Art and Porn
 Art: The definition has changed over time described as
1. a graphic work, photograph, sculpture or collage,
irrespective of artistic quality
2. a work of architecture be it a building or a model and
artistic craftsmanship
 Porn:
1. Intended for arousal, depicts penetration
2. Little or no artistic merit
3. Created for 3rd party consumption
The Difference Between Art and Porn II
 Porn is not subjective or open for
interpretation. Art is.
 Porn reduces sexuality to an entirely
physical thing. Art can capture the whole
of a person.
The Future of Pornography
1. Advancement of technology
2. Adolescents attitudes and beliefs about sexuality
3. Systematic perspective
