I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE
INT. STRANGE FLAT, DAY.
Credits appear on a black screen. A solemn voice speaks
through the darkness. It belongs to HECTOR.
HECTOR
I followed her.
There is a slight pause. The credits continue rolling.
HECTOR
What do you think?
The black screen vanishes to reveal a flat. In it, there are
black leather sofas, a large television setup, and a coffee
table, filled turned over papers.
Hector speaks into a cheap-looking mobile phone. His
shoulders are hunched, bent over the coffee table, but he is
staring outwards rather than at whatever documents are
jumbled in front.
The side of his head is lit up by dreary sunlight, but it
does not quite reach his face. He is left in relative
darkness.
HECTOR
This doesn’t feel right.
CUT TO:
EXT. TOWN, DAY.
A town appears on screen. The GIRL sits on a bench, looking
into her purse, before she closes it and stands up.
She walks towards a flight of stairs, themselves descending
into a dark and long alleyway.
HECTOR (V.O.)
Started out simple. Easy ride.
Then...
Girl stands in front of the alley mouth. She looks behind
her.
As though nervous, she wraps her loose cardigan tighter
around her body.
With folded arms, she walks onwards.
Two legs appear behind her. They pause, and follow.
2.
The Girl is quickly approached by an unnamed MAN, who
reaches out for her shoulder.
INT. STRANGE FLAT, DAY.
HECTOR
(Gravely)
Things got sinister.
EXT. TOWN, DAY.
He grabs her shoulder. She turns, startled, and then smiles
at him.
The man shows her a twenty pound note. She gets out her
purse and begins to rifle through it.
In a matter of seconds, she produces a packet of pills.
Their mouths move as though making amiable conversation as
they exchange hands.
The man walks away without further incident. The Girl puts
her purse in her cardigan and walks on.
HECTOR (V.O.)
And it didn’t stop there.
INT. SCHOOL BATHROOM, DAY.
The Girl walks into her bathroom. Her bag, tattered and old,
is slung over the sink, before she herself looks into the
mirror.
She reaches up to her eyes. She looks tired.
Her hand reaches into her bag and brings out the purse.
HECTOR (V.O.)
Never thought dealers would be
addicts.
She takes out a small tupperware box of pills.
HECTOR (V.O.)
Doesn’t make sense, really.
She puts them in front of her. Overcome with desperation,
she puts a shaking hand under the faucet and turns it on.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 3.
When there is a small pool of water in hand, she drinks it
and takes a pill.
She stumbles back and clutches the cubicle to keep her
balance.
INT. STRANGE FLAT, DAY.
HECTOR shakes his head.
He listens to what he’s being told, and sighs again.
HECTOR
No, it didn’t end there. When does
it ever?
EXT. TOWN, DAY.
GIRL is arguing with one of her drug clients. The argument
is heated, angry, and she is gesticulating in agitated and
controlled movements.
The client, shouting, grabs her.
The girl pushes him.
He collapses to the ground, where his head smashes against
the floor. There is a moment of pause as she looks down at
him, then, looking around, she moves towards him.
Taking gloves out of her purse, she crouches beside the
body, now unconscious and still.
She goes into his pockets. From them, she takes money.
Standing back up, she discards the gloves in the nearest bin
and hurries off.
INT. STRANGE FLAT, DAY.
HECTOR
I won’t be involved anymore.
He stands. He walks across the flat, shouting down the phone
to whoever he’s talking to.
HECTOR
I’m getting out of this before it’s
too late.
4.
He disconnects the phone. Opening the bin, he takes out the
battery and throws both the components away.
INT. HALLWAY, DAY.
A door can be seen. An unknown person stands in front of it,
blocking out the numbers.
It is the GIRL.
She knocks.
INT. STRANGE FLAT, DAY.
HECTOR stills. He looks at the door.
INT. HALLWAY, DAY.
GIRL
(Unsheathing a knife from her
sleeve)
Hector?...I know you’re there,
Hector.
INT. STRANGE FLAT, DAY.
Trembling, he goes to the door. With shaking, nervous hands,
he reaches up to the lock.
He turns it to open.
END.
