The document discusses targeting a wide audience aged 15-50 for a supernatural horror film. It aims for a 15 rating to appeal to 15-17 year olds who make up a large viewing percentage. The film genre of "realistic supernatural horror thriller" could attract both older audiences who enjoy supernatural elements and younger audiences looking for films to see with friends. Research showed 15-24 year olds make up 29% of cinema audiences, so the opening was designed to attract this key demographic through fashionable young characters while still appealing more broadly.
1. Who would be the audience for your media product?
For our opening we wanted it to be rated a 15; this is because we want the product to be
scary, but not too scary so that only over 18’s can watch it- because 15-17 year olds make
up a lot of viewing figures for films. We wanted the film to be realistic but supernatural at
the same time so that the film is open to variety of different viewers; so a ‘realistic
supernatural horror thriller’ may be a mouthful to say, but it would appeal to wide range
of viewers. These viewers could be; those 25-50 year olds who love a supernatural scary
element, or 15-20 year olds who want to go out with their friends to see a film- the film
would appeal to all.
The main age range we would attract would be anyone within 15-50, because the film has
not been designed for particular people- it would invite anyone to go and see it. If the age
range is so wide then the film would be widespread throughout society with everyone
talking about it; so the success of the film would be great.
2. Where did we get the idea for our target audience?
We got this idea from the infamous ‘Paranormal Activity’ series of films; as they rated the film 15,
and made nearly $200 million from a budget of $15,000. The film was a worldwide success as it
appealed to so many different viewers- as soon as I was 15 I watched it and I hate supernatural
films but for some reason I wanted to watch it, maybe from the influence of others- which is what
we would hope our film would be able to do; invite even those viewers that hate the sound of it
because everybody else has been drawn into viewing it.
3. How did I attract/address the audience?
The audience research that we did showed us that most of the viewing figures for
cinemas were made up by mainly 15-24 year olds (29%). This meant that we needed to
make the opening look attractive for younger people, but also so it applies to a wide
range of ages. I used the site http://www.cinemauk.org.uk/facts-and-figures/uk-cinema-
audience-analysis/uk-cinema-audience-by-age-and-gender/ to find these figures. To
make the opening look good for the younger generation we made the characters young
and fashionable so it feels like the film was about there age group, making them want to
view it. Attracting a wide range group of ages within the opening is so important
because if the opening is good it invites people to come and watch the rest of the film,
which brings in money; this is why we tried to make the opening look good for the 15-24
year olds as thy bring 29% of the money.
