Important Components Involved In Learning To Read
There are many important components involved in learning to read, however, five main aspects stand out. These being early experiences with language
and print, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary and fluency. All of these elements are important and depend on each other to generate the
ultimate goal for reading which is comprehension. Teachers need to have a comprehensive understanding of the process of learning to read, intensive
knowledge of effective strategies to help children thrive when learning to read
The reading process begins well before children start school where the introduction to language comes from parents providing a rich environment
surrounded by suitable oral language experiences, exposure to a range of books, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phonics is imperative to learning to read because it allows for the reader to distinguish these associations in letters and words that they read to captivate
comprehension (Walbank & Bisby, 2016). At the preschool–grade, knowledge of the alphabetic principles should be extensive and in–depth, however,
too much focus can lead to over application of this skills having words read but not comprehended. The directional approach for teaching phonics
should be precise, articulated well with graphemes organised in a logical and systematic way allowing plenty of time to recite the new skills received
inherited obtained attained gained acquired (Learning Point Associates, 2004). Likewise, with phonological awareness the expertise of listening to the
sounds in phonemes and words, phonics helps complete the process of sounding out to decode what has been read to eventually move onto the primary
goal of learning to read being comprehension (Fellows & Oakley, 2014). Another approach is to teach phonics is the analytical technique in which the
teacher guides students to observe phonemes and graphemes by scrutinising full words to bring forth another critical thinking skill required to
understand what the text means (Ewing & Maher, 2014). This essential component combined with

Remember Learning To Read
I don't remember learning to read. When I think back to when I was little, I can always remember reading. I don't remember learning letters or having
trouble with sight words. When other classmates were learning how to read in kindergarten, I was busy reading Junie B. Jones.
My older siblings loved to play school. When we played school, the best part was always being the teacher. When you are the teacher, it is more fun
when you have a lot of students. When I was little, I was always wanting to play with my older siblings, so I was always willing to be a student. This
is why I was able to read before I was in kindergarten.
In first grade, I remember being in a special reading group with only one other person. We read chapter books, while... Show more content on

Whenever the bookshelves became too full, we would take a banana box and fill it with books. The boxes were stored in the garage. When I had
finished reading all the books in the house that I wanted, I would go out to the garage. There I would spend about an hour looking through the books.
After finding a stack of books that seemed interesting, I would go inside to read. There is probably have about 9 banana boxes full of books in the
garage.
As the years went on, I continued to read. I would read books any time I got the chance. Sixth grade was one of my favorite years. We were able to
read for half an hour every day. We also read in book club. We were required to read two books a month, but I usually read four or five. I loved to find
new series that I liked. When we were required to read books for school, other classmates complained about it, but it was one of my favorite parts of
class. Even though I didn't always like the books, I liked to read books that I wouldn't have picked out to read. I liked being surprised when I enjoyed a
book that I didn't think I would like.
When I got into high school, I still loved to read, although I didn't have as much time to read. I still tried to fit time to read in between doing
homework, going to cross country practice, and spending time with my family. I went to the library when I had the chance and loved when I got to sit

Literacy: Is It Worth Learning To Read?
I would not necessarily say reading is the most gratifying activity for me, I would like to blame that on technology though. When I was younger
and technology did not have a big impact on me, I read for hours on end, but now as I have gotten older and technology is all around me, I would
rather scroll through Instagram and read about other peoples lives than read a novel. With that being said, I am by no means against reading and I
enjoy reading when I find a good book, I just do not often make time to read books. However, I am much more interested in the news and memoirs
rather than fictional novels. I find it entertaining to read life–changing events humanity has encountered. Although I have not continued to enjoy
reading now as I did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of my teachers were unwilling to spend one–on–one time with me to allow me to understand at the correct pace, that was until last year when
Sarah Wansley stepped in and really helped me to understand grammar, reading, andwriting. The most recent book I read was Tuesdays with Morrie
by Mitch Albom, although the book was required for a school project I now consider it to be my favorite book. During the research of Alboms
memoir I learned not only how to research and look at the background and continuations of some novels, but also that there are books for everyone
to enjoy and get lost in no matter how many book you have read and found completely boring. I often found reading to be just that, reading, I never
digested and understood the text. I would read a sentence and two seconds later I could not tell you a single word of it, because I was never
digesting the words on the page to make sense. That is the main reason I did not enjoy many books assigned for school, I would only read it to
answer the questions on the study guide and then a majority of the time I would fail the tests because I never took the extra time to enjoy the

Learning To Read: A Case Study
The importance of learning to read, has been discussed by many researchers over the decades. In particular, this case study, focuses on fluency
instruction, which is "accurate, automatic, expressive reading regarded by educators as the mark of proficient reading" (Honig, Diamond & Gutlohn,
2013, p. 370). The goal of reading is to comprehend or to understand what is read. It is often presumed that if students can decode a text that they will
eventually develop fluency, however, students need opportunities for intense, fluency–focused practice. Several studies have found students are not
successful in independent reading when they have not mastered fluency (Rasinski, Paige & Nageldinger, 2015; Honig, Diamond, & Gutlohn, 2013).
Thus, this case

Learning To Read A Book Analysis
In my daily schedule, I like to find a moment for myself where I am able to read a book. My first choice is usually a novel and I read for both class
and personal enjoyment because they mean reading a book that I usually like. There are many specific genres or types of books that I prefer over
others and there are also some novels that I could read on a repeated basis. The parts about reading a novel which I find the most challenging are
finding the book that interests you and keeps you engaged. There are a wide variety of books out there, but there is only a certain book that a person
looks for, and if you don't find that book, you may not be able to read a book that you don't prefer. The reader will then leave it and not read the book

These are the techniques or strategies that I use. The challenges that I will face while I am completing my study of To Kill A Mockingbird are
similar to the ones listed above. I won't have a problem with finding the book interesting because I like books like this one. However, as I finish
the books I think there will be several parts in the text which I won't understand and then I will have to read over again. Also, the book must be
finished within a certain time span, and this will be a challenge because I will have to manage my time to finish the book. The challenge to finish
this book, not hurry up and understand the novel at the same time will definitely be one of the more difficult problems that I will have to solve.
These are the problems I may face while reading the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. All these challenges while reading the novel will have to be solved
because I have to be successful in reading and understanding the book for personal enjoyment and also for the class assignments that I have to

Learning a new set of skills can be off putting and come with many difficult challenges. In the excerpt, "Learning to Read and Write " by Frederick
Douglass and "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X it discusses each mans challenges to be literate as black men in America. Though set almost half a
century apart, hardships occur as both strive for greatness. Through their use of diction, details, and language each speaker differentiates themselves
from each other and forms their own unique way of sharing their story. In the two excerpts the two men use diction to expose their character and
evoke emotions in the reader. Frederick Douglass describes his first challenge, when abandoned by his mistress's teachings and he has to come up
with ways to become familiar with reading. "The plan which I adopted, and the by which I was most successful, was that of making friends with all
the little white boys whom I met in the streets". BY choosing to say this Douglass then makes himself seen like a strong independent man. When things
get tough he doesn't give up he simply finds another way to get it done and that is impressive. While Douglass uses diction to empower himself
Malcolm X uses diction to lower his ego and describe himself before learning to read, "In the street, I had been the most articulate hustler out there I
had commanded attention when I said something. But now trying to write simple English I not only wasn't articulate, I wasn't even functional". BY

Reflection About Reading
If you ponder about it, most people wouldn't make it in this world we live in today if they didn't know how to read and write. Reading is everywhere
and is a very important, as well as a necessary, part of the human life. Everyday activities include reading road signs, magazines, billboards, texts,
newspapers, emails, books, labels and so on. Over the years of learning how to properly read and write, my family and teachers have definitely made a
massive impact on my reading and writing techniques that I use today. Books have been an enormous part of my life, if not one of the biggest.
They provided me with unforgettable memories that I am thankful for today as I use their advice throughout my life. Because of the fact that this
was my very first day of preschool, my body was trembling under my clothes with fear. This would become my first literary memory. Man, did this
day start great. Perfectly dressed from head to toe in my new favorite outfit, I strutted in boldly with a sweet smile on my face. The day started out
with my classmates and I playing matching word games in a circle group together as a class. By taking turns, I got to hear other kids saying words
aloud as well as myself when it was my turn. This experience helped me start learning to read because it taught me to pronounce the words and match
it with what animal it paired with. As we did this activity over and over I realized that I could read all of the matching words. Our next activity was to

Learning To Read And Write Analysis
"I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over," is what Governor Jimmy Carter said during his Inaugural Address on January
12, 1971, but it was not always true. In the texts, "Superman and Me," by Sherman Alexie, and, "Learning to Read and Write," by Frederick Douglass
there are clear problems of racial discrimination between both authors. There are many other similarities and differences throughout Frederick and
Sherman's demanding upbringing, the most prominent are the main character's obstacles, goals, and the claims that the author makes in the book. The
obstacles that Sherman and Frederick go through can be compared and contrasted quite efficiently. To begin with, they both face extreme racial and
physical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To illustrate, they both have the innate urge to read and write. Another inference that can be made is that they are both mainly fueled by racial
discrimination to read. Sherman uses it as an escape from the downcast life he lived, and Frederick also reads to escape the pain, but he also reads
as an act of defiance. In the text Frederick says "Mistress, in teaching me the alphabet, had given me the inch, and no precaution could prevent me
from taking the ell" (Douglass). Essentially he is saying that because his mistress had taken the first step he wasn't going to stop just because she
said. One point that can be made is their inspiration to follow their goals. Alexie uses superman, "I learned to read using a Superman comic..."
(Alexie), while Frederick uses a book called the Columbian Orator. The books helped them take different paths. The Columbian Orator depicted a
slave that was defying his master; as a result, Frederick curious about the prospect of freedom. The Superman comics helped Sherman realize that no
barrier can stop him. The two are very alike and different in terms of their goals and accomplishing

Malcom's Learning To Read
In "Learning to Read" by Malcom X, I believe that the topic is about how important it is for one to know how to read. Malcom clearly expresses his
thirst for knowledge and wanting to learn more, exclaming that he "was so fascinated that (he) went on– (he) copied the dictonary's next page." I also,
after a lot of time, consider the audience to be readers whom are interested in how Malcom became such and active reader. Malcom expresses how
he "became increasingly frustrated, at not being able to espress what (he) wanted to convey in letters that (he) wrote." After teaching himself he was
no longer frustrated, he was able to "for the first time pick up a book and read" and "understand what the book was saying." As for the purpose of this

Analysis Of Learning To Read By Malcolm X
Learning how to read is one of the most common processes in the world. For me, learning how to read is the most useful ability that I have learned
throughout my entire life. For others, most people learn how to read though different languages in different ways. For Malcolm X, he found reading
to be appealing and devoted so much time to it. Malcolm X recounts his personal history of learning to read and how he finds reading to be the most
important skill and influence everything in his life. He retells his history of reading several books and dictionaries and how th process slowly
affected his life. He elaborates how reading increases a performance and efficiency to heighten their potential. In "Learning to Read, " by Malcolm X, he

He repeats the various books that he read and it shows the variety of what he read. For example, he repeats the sentence with "I" and goes on to talk
about reading about the horrors of slavery (165). It is not directly claimed, but it can be inferred that what he read had an effect on his goals in later
life. This even further shows how using repetition reiterates a thought and drives the thought into the reader's mind. The extensive examples prove that
Malcolm X uses repetition along with anecdotes to remind the reader that the events in the story happened to him and not anyone else. Although
Malcolm X's repetition does a splendid job of conveying his message, the strongest tools in his arsenal are his anecdotes, or short stories. Because the
text is a narrative, it tells mostly of real events in his life. He tells this narrative through anecdotes about his time in prison reading countless books and
texts. For example, he recounts the time that he read the dictionary, reciting countless volumes of words just to learn new things (162). This
demonstrates that all of these event that he mentions happen to him and were true. When Malcolm X uses this anecdote he is saying that a simple
dictionary furthered a man that would become one of the most prominent civil rights activists. This further proves his point that learning to read is the
most important and influential ability

Malcolm X's Learning To Read
In the essay Learning to Read, Malcolm X details the process in which he learned to read and the tremendous effects it had on his perspective of the
race issues in America. During his stay in prison, Malcolm X was given the opportunity to spend timeless hours learning as much as he could about
reading and the English language. Furthermore, Malcolm X was fortunate enough to stay at a prison that had an extensive library. As a result, Malcolm
X was able to discover and learn more about his own culture. Malcolm X learned that the African American culture is unfortunately cast in the shadows
of the white population and neglected in textbooks as well as history. Not only does he believe the white population suppresses African Americans, but

Learning To Read And Write By Frederick Douglass
In the extract "Learning to Read and Write," Frederick Douglass tells the intended audience about his experiences as a slave living in his master's
house and how he went through many trials to learn to read and write. In this excerpt, Frederick Douglass uses imagery, contrast, pathos, ethos, logos,
an empathic tone, certain verb choice, and metaphors to inform African Americans of how crucial it is to learn how to read and write and to inform an
audience of caucasian Americans of the wrongdoings that slavery has brought about. Frederick Douglass is often persuasive using pathos to get across
to the intended audiences.
Frederick Douglass had specific audiences that he wanted to either relate to or to get across a point to. African American people that had endured
slavery were an intended audience because Frederick Douglass states things such as "Thus, after a long, tedious effort for years. I finally
succeeded in learning how to read and write" and "I was compelled to resort to various stratagems". Those sentences by Frederick Douglass show
that it was not an easy time for him and the levels or trials that he went through to be someone who was not illiterate. Frederick Douglass never once
was one to give up on the need to learn to read and write, so that shows that Frederick Douglass thought that it was important for the African American
people to be as well educated as the caucasian Americans were. The caucasian Americans were Frederick's intended audience because of Frederick's
use of contrast throughout the extract. Frederick tells how his mistress had changed on him from being a helpful, loving, and nice woman to an evil
spirited, bitter brute ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Frederick Douglass, Learning To Read And Read, Malcolm X
Unequal Education Frederick Douglass, "Learning to Read and Write", Malcolm X, "Learning to Read". How does one compare the struggles
between them. First off Mr. Douglass, "Learning to Read and Write" is not truly comparable with any of the other reading options, and to force
comparisons would belittle Mr. Douglass's struggles to do so. Every other reading option had to endure unfair treatment and racism but no one
was born into slavery as Mr. Douglass was. Whereas every other reading option had access to underfunded and unequal schools, Mr. Douglass was
not afforded these options so order to learn he had to hide it for fear of being beat or killed. "I lived in Master Hugh's family about seven years.
During this time, I succeeded in learning to read and write. In accomplishing this, I was compelled to resort to various stratagem"(Douglass 1).
Mr. Douglass not only wanted to learn but had a deep driving need to learn for it was his only route to escape slavery. "I resolved to run away. I
looked forward to a time at which it would be safe for me to escape. I was too young to think of doing so immediately; besides, I wished to learn
how to write,as I might have occasion to write my own pass. I consoled myself with the hope thatI should oneday find a good chance" (Douglass 3).

Analysis Of Learning To Read By Frederick Douglass
In his autobiographical essay "Learning to Read", Frederick Douglass illustrates the critical and empowering aspects of his life that contributed to his
success and shaped his attitude towards learning. Douglass was a former slave who became emancipated and fought for the freedom and rights of
enslaved Africans that experienced harsh and brutal treatment. During his early years, Douglass was illegally taught how to read and understand the
alphabet by his master's wife. However, he was later abandoned by his mistress and was forced to learn on his own. Throughout this troubling moment
of his life, Douglass turned to a book titled "The Columbian Orator" which allowed him to acknowledge the brutalities of slavery and use his
knowledge to help other former slaves. Douglass's narrative depicts the remorseful attitude which he expressed towards his education and literacy.
However, his knowledge later allowed him to escape the brutalities of slavery and contribute his efforts to fighting against it. Similarly to Douglass, I
have experienced many positive and negative aspects of learning that have altered and shaped my attitude towards school.
It was the fall of 2016 when my sophomore year of high school began. I recall walking into each of my classes on the first day of school and listening
to my teachers provide brief introductions about themselves and the course work that would be taught throughout the year. I particularly recall walking

Learning to Read Concentration takes its form in the little beads of sweat collecting on my upper lip. My mom's finger dances along the words in

the word should be.
And then suddenly it appears, the word I couldn't recall, shaped by my utterance into a reality that I can understand. The syllable flutters out of me,

The Importance Of The English Language
Many Americans due to the fact that they have been in America they believe that the English language is easier to master than another language.
Moreover, U.S college students believes that since they speak English frequently throughout the day they have mastered the English language.
However, this may sound like common sense but it not true. Studies "from the U.S Department of Education shows that many high school seniors are
graduating unable to read at grade level and one in four cannot read at even the most basic level" (abcnews.go.com). These studies completely refute the
theory that mastering the skills of English is unnecessary. Malcolm X who "was one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America
during the 1960s" even struggled with the English language (palomar.edu). In addition to that, he was born in America too. Evidence to the previous
claim is in "Learning to Read," where Malcom X said it himself saying, "Trying to write simple English, I not only wasn't articulate, I wasn't even
functional." Malcom X did not let that stop him. He performs some effective techniques in his pursuit of enhancement that college students emulate if
they want to improve. Practicing, Reading, and learning new words are three effective techniques that college students should use to reach their mastery
level of the English language. Many people may have heard the hackneyed quote that says, "Practice makes perfect." Well, Malcom X is a living
testimony of that. This

Douglass 'Learning To Read The Columbian Orator'
In the narrative, Douglass uses cause–and–effect relationships between events to show that he is feeling tormented "with a sense of my wretched
condition." Since Douglass was raised by a wealthy family who trusts him, he was allowed both time and resources (bread) to give him the
opportunity to learn how to read (paragraph 1). Learning to read was an important part of his life because it allowed him to read "The Columbian
Orator" and other sources. Reading allowed Douglass to understand the history of slavery. Paragraph 4 states, "The reading of these documents enabled
me to utter my thoughts, and to meet the arguments brought forward to sustain slavery." However, reading "brought on another even more painful than

First, if Douglass had been born after the Civil War, then he would not have been a slave. This is because, after the Civil War, slavery had stopped.
Another thing is he would be able to learn to read and write without sneaking away. Paragraph 1 states, "When I was sent of errands, I always took
my book with me, and by going one part of my errand quickly, I found enough time to get a lesson before my return." If it was after the Civil War,
he would have gone to school without sneaking away. Also, Douglass wouldn't have to give the white kids (his teachers) bread in trade of
learning. Finally, Douglass wouldn't have felt as tormented. He felt that he was very trapped and couldn't express his feelings. But after the Civil
War, he could rebel openly. To conclude, he wouldn't have felt tortured by his "wretched condition" because he wouldn't be trapped in a lifetime of

The Place Of Phonics In Learning To Read
The contrasting perspectives of the two passages, "CliffsTestPrep" by Jerry Bobrow (2006) and "The Place of Phonics in Learning to Read and

phonemic awareness is important to understand since it affects reading scores. Emmitt however, argues that there is no evidence that phonemic
awareness has a major impact on reading achievement. Bobrow discusses the importance of phonemic awareness. Bobrow states that phonemic
awareness is important for reading achievement and learning how to read. According to Bobrow, students need to be able to "grasp printed

Learning To Read Essay
Learning to read is a process, Understanding how a group of words work well with one another to combine a sentence, paragraph or even a novel.
Reading to learn is taking in information that has been given and being able to apply to life situations. Many still argue today about the difference
between learning to read and reading to learn. Throughout elementary, I was given the opportunity to attend an amazing public school that was held to
standards as a private school. I learned skills that many kindergarteners did not learn until the first grade. Being able to read full chapter books in a
two–day period was only one of the many perks that I was given. After my family and I changed locations, I had to attend a different school. Once the
teachers realized how well I could read out loud, spell words, and understand the text, I then realized how much I love to read. Many of us enjoy

Reading to learn can only help us. Reading does not have to always be about knowledge, it could be for pure entertainment. Reading affects the

many ways of life and as well as many other life events. As I continue my journey of life, I have a positive view on my own literacy because I have

Importance Of Learning To Read And Writing In English
Learning to read and write in English was a very tough accomplishment that I made in first grade. It was difficult because my first language is
Spanish. With the help of my parents and my teachers in school, I had the chance to learn another language. It took time, practice and effort to
accomplish my goal to read and write in another language.
The earliest memory of literacy was spending time as a young child, with my mother, reading the Clifford the Big Red Dog book. Learning how to read
this book felt like it took me six million years to do so, but eventually, I learned. As I read the Clifford book, I struggled to pronounce every single
word. My mother tried her best to teach me how to sound each syllable. "Cli–fford, you ha–ve to eat up and get big," I said. I read it at a low volume,
and my voice was shaky and cracking. I didn't know if I was reading it right. I had a rough time improving my reading level. Besides Clifford the Big
Red Dog, I read The Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister. At home, I watched plenty of English movies and television shows such as Dora the Explorer
to help develop my English literacy. I enjoyed watching those shows because they helped me a lot.
In first grade, the teachers spend time teaching us how to learn the alphabet, how to sound each letter, how to pronounce words that we didn't
understand and how to use words in complete sentences. I started to gain knowledge of what were adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns. Also, I
learned that what makes a story is characters, a setting, a climax, etc. My encouraging English Teacher would meet up with each of us individually
and made us read aloud so she can see what our reading level is. She saw that I struggled, so she used her teaching techniques to help me get better at
reading. After I finished first grade, my teacher scheduled a parent meeting with my mother, and she gave my mother the option to send me to summer
school so I can take an English class and receive more help so I could get better at writing and reading in English. Summer was taking forever. I felt
frustrated because It felt that no matter how much I tried to learn how to read and progress in my reading level, it got way more difficult. I felt like

Learning to Read and Write Essays

Essay I
February 26th, 2013 "Learning to Read and Write" by Fredrick Douglas is a story about a slave breaking the bondage of ignorance by learning to
read and write. During the course of 7 years Douglas discreetly teaches himself to read and write by means of stealing newspapers, trading food
with poor white boys for knowledge and books, as well as copying his master's handwriting. Douglas learning to read gave him extreme awareness of
his condition as he says "...I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched
condition, without the remedy" (Page 168–169). With his new consciousness he suffered with depression envying his fellow slaves for their ... Show

Ignorance also befalls on the oppressors. Douglas sheds light on how slave owners prayed to Christ, went to church every Sunday and yet mistreated
people to the upmost degree and punished them for reading. Southerners often justified slavery by saying they were bringing Christianity to slaves.
Christianity is a religion based on love and compassion for your fellow man. Since the Europeans did not believe the Africans were worthy to be
in the same human category as them they dehumanized them relating them to animals. Although the bible says "we must never treat any part of
God's creation with contempt. When we do, we are indirectly treating our Creator with contempt." If they did not believe slaves were worthy to be
treated as God's creation then why did they push their religion on them? The answer is to keep them controlled and confused. Europeans stripped
Africans of their traditions starting with their name, this in some degree made Africans like blank canvases ready to be painted anew. Christianity
gave slaves hope that one day their situation will change if they prayed hard enough and abide by Christ words. It also gave them a brand new
vision of what God should look like. White is good, Black is bad. In the Christian bible they saw Jesus as a white man so in turn they could have
related the goodness of Christ to the "goodness" of their masters. Some slaves even argued about whose master was more kind. I guess this is what

Learning To Read Analysis
I can't exactly say that I remember learning to read. I was fortunate enough to have gone to a very good private school where reading and writing was
taught in preschool and reinforced all throughout the elementary and middle school grades. Reading aloud in class was part of the daily curriculum,
and because the school I went to was Catholic, we'd often read the readings in front of the entire school during our weekly Mass. I remember reading,
but I don't really remember the process of learning how to.
When I asked my mom about learning to read, she laughed and told me the story of when I was about three years old, upset and complaining, even
crying, because I felt that she was holding me back because I didn't know how to read yet. The story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I typically always spell out every word, but I occasionally use shorthand when I'm in a rush or talking to friends. Surely, being able to read
correlates to being able to use shorthand for personal use and practical use. For example, when I'm taking notes in class or texting a friend, I'll often
use 'bc' (because) in place of a semicolon. My sentences are often very long and full of grammatical errors, but the person I'm talking to always
understands what's being said because we have created our own shorthand language. 'Probably' becomes 'probs' or 'prolly', 'though' becomes 'tho', 'very'
becomes 'v', and of course, the classic; 'you' becomes 'u'. In addition to shorthand, proper punctuation loses all importance when I'm taking notes or
texting. It's very rare that anything is properly capitalized, regardless of the person, place, or thing I'm talking about, and apostrophes and commas are
completely dropped. When texting and taking notes, all that is important is getting the information you want to convey out. Without a good foundation
of reading and writing, I think using and understanding shorthand would be very

Tier 1 Vocabulary
Vocabulary is the knowledge of words that able us to communicate with others orally, or in writing, and it is acquired through listening or reading. A
learning experience of vocabulary, that is called indirect, is obtained when children engage in daily conversation with family and friends, through read
aloud by adults, or through own reading. Instead, the learning experience of vocabulary, gained through teacher word instruction, it's called direct.
Importance to the Reading Process As children learn new vocabulary words while learning to read, they understand and make connection with the
sounding of the letters already acquired, to the word they see in print. Even though children learn the vocabulary meanings, usually through indirect
experiences, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Learning To Read And Write In Kindergarten Essay
Kids nowadays are taught to read and write in kindergarten. Some say that is the right way to teach kids. People often learn to read and write
when they are older, but the meaning is never the same for a 13 year old vs. a 20 year old. What about the meaning is different for an older person
that it is not to a younger person? When somebody learns to read and write at an early stage of life; it is much more beneficial to the subject than
learning at an older age the reason behind has to do with how the brain is wired and how the vocabulary expands. When an older person with low
resources learns to read and write an older age they lack the basis of what a 13 year old already has; that is the knowledge of several vocabulary words
that are learned through reading. An adult trying to learn how to read is not going to know or have the same vocabulary as the vocabulary of a younger
subject because of the fact that even in children books the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In "Frederik Douglass Learning to read (1845)" Frederik Douglass describes his experiences as a slave and how he learned to read and write. The
main idea of Frederick's passage is how powerful and important education is. Frederick accounts for how he began to learn to read through his mistress,
who taught him the alphabet. Douglass lived in the master Hugh's family. Master Hugh ended the mistress illegal attempts at teaching Douglass. After
learning the alphabet, Douglass continued to educate himself with the help of the white children he met on the street. Douglass explains that he gave

Effective Reading Interventions For Kids With Learning...
Throughout a child's life, he/she is faced with many obstacles. One of the biggest hurdles that they must overcome is learning to read. For some
children, that task does not come easy. Children with learning disabilities struggle the most in school because they do not learn as quickly as children
without learning disabilities. In an article by Kristin Stanberry and Lee Swanson called Effective Reading Interventions for Kids with Learning
Disabilities, it discusses the different interventions that teachers can use to improve the learning capabilities of students with learning deficits.
Throughout this essay, different topics will be discussed on how improve and increase word recognition skills will benefit a child with learning
disabilities, different ways to improve reading comprehension skills, and personal viewpoints on how these different methods are effective.
In this article, Swanson discusses how improving and increasing word recognition skills can be beneficial to students with learning disabilities. Also,
he concurred that there were three instruction components that proved most effective in increasing word recognition skills in students with learning
disabilities. The three components were: sequencing, segmentation, and advanced organizers. Some examples of sequencing are, having the child
break an unknown word into separate sounds or parts they can sound out, matching difficulty levels to the tasks and to the students, and lastly using
step–by–step prompts.

Learning To Read And Write A Short Story
Have you ever had a really difficult time in life and it turned out for the better? Learning to read and write was a process that with my mother,
growing up in poverty and being bullied at school really shaped me into the person I am today. My mother had me at a young age and even though
everyone told her she shouldn't have, she went through with me and my brother's birth before the age of twenty. I remember very little about my
brother's birth since he was born sixteen months after me. You can imagine the stress and obstacles my singlemother faced. Yet, somehow, she knew
how to be the perfect mother to me and my brother and not only made sure we had everything we needed she made sure we used our minds from a
young age making us literate before we went to school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More than anything I wanted to be a child and play outside. My mom would help us trace our alphabet letters by using dotted lines and evening

treats anytime we worked hard and learned something new. We made up songs to remember how to count to one–hundred and even wrote our own
booklets with pictures. She really knew how to make it fun for me and my brother. My brother had struggles because of a learning disability and was
diagnosed with dyslexia. My mom would stay up late nights helping him with any homework he had and taught him to read before he went to school

The significance of learning to read and write is the ability for a person to express themselves to others by communicating vocally or through writing.
The communication needs to be of substance in order for it to mean anything. Reading induces the ability to learn information one did not previously
know. With ability of new words and their meaning within your arsenal, gives you the ability to attack or defend your point of view. With these
supporting capabilities it enables you to take and stand for what you believe and want to express.

Analysis Of Learning To Read By Frederick Douglass
In the narrative 'Learning to Read,' Fredrick Douglass describes the journey he took to become literate. The account of his journey entailed many
concepts, such as freedom, uncertainty, but overall the narrative explores the theme of ignorance. Ignorance can be defined as being unfamiliar or
unaware of surroundings as well as the absence of information. Before continuing it is important to clarify that stupidity and ignorance are not related
and cannot be used interchangeably. The concept of ignorance is used as a tool ofslavery in the excerpt 'Learning to Read' of Douglass'
autobiography. Douglass' narrative creates a visual of the reality of slavery and shows the relationship between freedom and knowledge and how
slave holders used ignorance as a way to maintain power. In the excerpt, 'Learning to read' of Fredrick Douglass' autobiography, he tells his
experiences of slavery and how he got to where he is. To give some context and background the narrative begins by describing the initial relationship
that he had with his master. He illustrates the success that he was having at learning to read and write and his relationship with the master's wife. The
mistress, as she was called, was tender–hearted, in Fredrick's words, and taught him various things and encouraged him to learn, which was unusual at
this point in history. Slaves were typically kept from learning to read and write for reasons we will get into later. The relationship and privileges the

Advantages Of Learning To Read And Write Essay
Learning to Read and Write
Discrimination will always be in the world and when it comes to schools its even worst. We cannot even go to school without some type of racial slur
being said to you. The Justice Department here in society can investigate these types of action against someone not getting into school based on their
skin color or national origin.
There are a lot of people who believe that discrimination have disappeared and that's not just true. There is an unfair advantage here and that's not
being able to go to school to learn to read and write. Just like Frederick Douglass said, " I succeeded in learning to read and write" ( Douglass 184).
Minorities are still being mistreated, when it comes to learning in school. Frederick Douglass has to learn from his mistress to read and write. (
Douglass 185). All races, ethnicity and people of color should be able to learn and get an education. It seems to me all the education was going to all
the Caucasians children and just like Douglas offered children bread in exchanged for knowledge ( Douglass 185).
Every student has the right to an education free from discrimination that provides a quality education to learn. Discrimination is always occurring,
when people are treated unfairly because of how or what they look like. In schools, discrimination can make it difficult for students to learn because
they don't feel safe or accepted. Frederick did not feel safe, so his mistress taught him to read ( Douglass 185). As such, finding ways to fight
discrimination is essential to ensuring students educational opportunity. Frederick Douglass got his opportunity by learning to write because of the
ship board timber that was used for letters ( Douglass 188).
Its hard for African–American students to be treated fairly in school because of their color. They do not want to see African American get ahead of
game, when it comes to education because the society feels as though we would on top and they wants us at the bottom. We already knew that African
Americans were disproportionately affected, but now its Latino students as well and LGBT community.
During the era of slavery in the United States, the education of African–Americans, enslaved and free, was often

VARK Learning styles: Read/write learning style
Overview of the read/write learning style
The read/write learning style mainly makes the use of printed words to receive and convey learning information. Using the style enables one skill to
become the input of another through the transfer of the ability to read to that of writing. The skills transfer is integral in raising the awareness of how
the structural components involved in learning are shared in both reading and writing modalities (VARK, 2016). One of the reasons a leaner may
choose to embrace the read/write learning style is because it facilitates cognitive concept mastery since it brings out the aspect of making ... Show more

In case the study consists of charts, diagrams, actions and reactions, one ought to change them into words or statements ( Routman, 2014). With
correspondence to the listed personal strategies, the VARK strategies require that an individual ought to write the principles and ideas from the intake
sources into other words (VARK, 2016). Reading notes again and again silently is another VARK strategy which can be compared to developing
questions as indicated in the personal strategies. Writing words again and again as a preferred VARK strategy is the strategy that somehow challenges
the personal strategies but it can be partly linked to reading the notes, summary and the developed questions again and again to enhance mastery
How teaching and learning is influenced by the awareness of the learning style, preference and strategies
Read/write learning style has significant influences on both teaching and learning; hence, determining how a teacher should execute the teaching role
and how a student receives and retains concepts. The use of reading/ writing style exercises metacognition in learning, thereby, positively influencing
learning. The style compels learners to be engaged in metacognitve processes, then enables them to regulate and attend to cognitive processes (Heeney,
n.d). On the other hand, the awareness of the reading/writing learning style influences the mode of

Learning To Read In Elementary School
Chapter 1: Introduction to the Study "It matters little what else they learn in elementary school if they do not learn to read at grade level (Fielding,
Kerr, & Rosier, 2008, p. 30)."
One of the most fundamental building blocks to success is learning to read by the end of third grade. There is clear evidence of the impact of reading on
students continued academic success. A longitudinal study conducted of third grade students in Chicago in 1996–1997 showed a correlation between
third and eighth grade reading scores (Lesnick, Goerge, Smithgall, & Gwynne, 2010). Based on the findings, students' third grade reading achievement
scores were found to be a strong predictor of students' grade point average and potential course failures in ninth grade. When grouping the students by
their third grade level in eighth and ninth grade, it also helped explain the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of allowing students to feel helpless, there is a need to provide the students with tools that will enable them to overcome the reading difficulties
themselves. According to Dr. Joseph Torgeson (2002), two components are necessary for reading comprehension:language comprehension skills and
the ability to read words in print fluently and accurately. In order for students to be able to read fluently, they must have a strong grasp of
phonological awareness and be able to apply the alphabetical principal. Phonemic awareness has been found to be a strong predictor of reading success
(IRA board issues position statement on phonemic awareness, 1998). When students develop these prerequisite skills, reading unknown words
becomes effortless (Torgeson, 2002). Consequently, students can then spend their efforts on comprehending the text. Early readers are much more
likely to become life–long learners that are willing to tackle a variety of

Four Theories : Learning And Read
Four Theories: Learning to Read Learning to read is beginning to develop earlier in elementary grades. Students are expected to be emergent readers
by the time he or she leaves kindergarten and enters first grade. If a child is not, he or she is labeled as being behind. According to Hughes (2007)
emergent readers are using early reading strategies in consistently, read easy patterned text, retell text with simple storyline, and respond to text at a
literal level. Hughes (2007) also says literacy develops in young children through play, daily conversation and interactions with text of all kinds. Many
children come with emergent literacy skills; can recognize signs and labels, scribble letters, retell stories by pointing at pictures and talking about
them, and some have varying degrees of phonemic and phonological awareness. This essay will define and explain implication for each theory in
learning to read.
Cueing Systems The cueing system is made up of four cueing systems: Grapho–phonemic, Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic. Each is used in
language development and are important for communication. Grapho–phonemic cues are related to the sounds we hear (both individual letters and
letter combinations), the letters of the alphabet and the conventions of print (Hughes, The Four Cueing Systems, 2007). Syntactic cueing system is
having knowledge about language. The syntactic system provides information about the form and the structure of the language, including whether or not

Learning To Read: A Case Study
Regardless of the fact that children start in the same spot when it comes to learning, every child is different therefore, there are possibilities to
developmental delays. During one's middle childhood period, cognitive processes, among many other factors are developing. Children encounter
many hardships during this time. Learning to read is a major developmental challenge for many kids. According to an article regarding struggling
readers, "learning to read is a challenge for almost 40% of kids" (Reading Rockets, 2015). As life progresses, so does a child's development and
how they manage to go through life day by day. The challenge of learning to read can definitely affect the adults present in a child's life. Teachers and
parents are two of the biggest roles in a child's life that has to deal with this obstacle in development. A teacher needs his or her students to become
well–rounded educated citizens. However, this period of time is definitely one of the hardest stages for teachers to be successful educating all of their
students only because this is the time in the learner's life where they are being taught many different new concepts required in life for them to... Show

An educator and or a professional can use Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory to break down different factors potentially affecting the child's

Important Components Involved In Learning To Read

  • 1. Important Components Involved In Learning To Read There are many important components involved in learning to read, however, five main aspects stand out. These being early experiences with language and print, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary and fluency. All of these elements are important and depend on each other to generate the ultimate goal for reading which is comprehension. Teachers need to have a comprehensive understanding of the process of learning to read, intensive knowledge of effective strategies to help children thrive when learning to read The reading process begins well before children start school where the introduction to language comes from parents providing a rich environment surrounded by suitable oral language experiences, exposure to a range of books, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Phonics is imperative to learning to read because it allows for the reader to distinguish these associations in letters and words that they read to captivate comprehension (Walbank & Bisby, 2016). At the preschool–grade, knowledge of the alphabetic principles should be extensive and in–depth, however, too much focus can lead to over application of this skills having words read but not comprehended. The directional approach for teaching phonics should be precise, articulated well with graphemes organised in a logical and systematic way allowing plenty of time to recite the new skills received inherited obtained attained gained acquired (Learning Point Associates, 2004). Likewise, with phonological awareness the expertise of listening to the sounds in phonemes and words, phonics helps complete the process of sounding out to decode what has been read to eventually move onto the primary goal of learning to read being comprehension (Fellows & Oakley, 2014). Another approach is to teach phonics is the analytical technique in which the teacher guides students to observe phonemes and graphemes by scrutinising full words to bring forth another critical thinking skill required to understand what the text means (Ewing & Maher, 2014). This essential component combined with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Remember Learning To Read I don't remember learning to read. When I think back to when I was little, I can always remember reading. I don't remember learning letters or having trouble with sight words. When other classmates were learning how to read in kindergarten, I was busy reading Junie B. Jones. My older siblings loved to play school. When we played school, the best part was always being the teacher. When you are the teacher, it is more fun when you have a lot of students. When I was little, I was always wanting to play with my older siblings, so I was always willing to be a student. This is why I was able to read before I was in kindergarten. In first grade, I remember being in a special reading group with only one other person. We read chapter books, while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whenever the bookshelves became too full, we would take a banana box and fill it with books. The boxes were stored in the garage. When I had finished reading all the books in the house that I wanted, I would go out to the garage. There I would spend about an hour looking through the books. After finding a stack of books that seemed interesting, I would go inside to read. There is probably have about 9 banana boxes full of books in the garage. As the years went on, I continued to read. I would read books any time I got the chance. Sixth grade was one of my favorite years. We were able to read for half an hour every day. We also read in book club. We were required to read two books a month, but I usually read four or five. I loved to find new series that I liked. When we were required to read books for school, other classmates complained about it, but it was one of my favorite parts of class. Even though I didn't always like the books, I liked to read books that I wouldn't have picked out to read. I liked being surprised when I enjoyed a book that I didn't think I would like. When I got into high school, I still loved to read, although I didn't have as much time to read. I still tried to fit time to read in between doing homework, going to cross country practice, and spending time with my family. I went to the library when I had the chance and loved when I got to sit in bed and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Literacy: Is It Worth Learning To Read? I would not necessarily say reading is the most gratifying activity for me, I would like to blame that on technology though. When I was younger and technology did not have a big impact on me, I read for hours on end, but now as I have gotten older and technology is all around me, I would rather scroll through Instagram and read about other peoples lives than read a novel. With that being said, I am by no means against reading and I enjoy reading when I find a good book, I just do not often make time to read books. However, I am much more interested in the news and memoirs rather than fictional novels. I find it entertaining to read life–changing events humanity has encountered. Although I have not continued to enjoy reading now as I did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of my teachers were unwilling to spend one–on–one time with me to allow me to understand at the correct pace, that was until last year when Sarah Wansley stepped in and really helped me to understand grammar, reading, andwriting. The most recent book I read was Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, although the book was required for a school project I now consider it to be my favorite book. During the research of Alboms memoir I learned not only how to research and look at the background and continuations of some novels, but also that there are books for everyone to enjoy and get lost in no matter how many book you have read and found completely boring. I often found reading to be just that, reading, I never digested and understood the text. I would read a sentence and two seconds later I could not tell you a single word of it, because I was never digesting the words on the page to make sense. That is the main reason I did not enjoy many books assigned for school, I would only read it to answer the questions on the study guide and then a majority of the time I would fail the tests because I never took the extra time to enjoy the ... • 4. Learning To Read: A Case Study The importance of learning to read, has been discussed by many researchers over the decades. In particular, this case study, focuses on fluency instruction, which is "accurate, automatic, expressive reading regarded by educators as the mark of proficient reading" (Honig, Diamond & Gutlohn, 2013, p. 370). The goal of reading is to comprehend or to understand what is read. It is often presumed that if students can decode a text that they will eventually develop fluency, however, students need opportunities for intense, fluency–focused practice. Several studies have found students are not successful in independent reading when they have not mastered fluency (Rasinski, Paige & Nageldinger, 2015; Honig, Diamond, & Gutlohn, 2013). • 5. Learning To Read A Book Analysis In my daily schedule, I like to find a moment for myself where I am able to read a book. My first choice is usually a novel and I read for both class and personal enjoyment because they mean reading a book that I usually like. There are many specific genres or types of books that I prefer over others and there are also some novels that I could read on a repeated basis. The parts about reading a novel which I find the most challenging are finding the book that interests you and keeps you engaged. There are a wide variety of books out there, but there is only a certain book that a person looks for, and if you don't find that book, you may not be able to read a book that you don't prefer. The reader will then leave it and not read the book completely or with much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are the techniques or strategies that I use. The challenges that I will face while I am completing my study of To Kill A Mockingbird are similar to the ones listed above. I won't have a problem with finding the book interesting because I like books like this one. However, as I finish the books I think there will be several parts in the text which I won't understand and then I will have to read over again. Also, the book must be finished within a certain time span, and this will be a challenge because I will have to manage my time to finish the book. The challenge to finish this book, not hurry up and understand the novel at the same time will definitely be one of the more difficult problems that I will have to solve. These are the problems I may face while reading the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. All these challenges while reading the novel will have to be solved because I have to be successful in reading and understanding the book for personal enjoyment and also for the class assignments that I have to ... • 6. Learning To Read And Write By Frederick Douglass And... Learning a new set of skills can be off putting and come with many difficult challenges. In the excerpt, "Learning to Read and Write " by Frederick Douglass and "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X it discusses each mans challenges to be literate as black men in America. Though set almost half a century apart, hardships occur as both strive for greatness. Through their use of diction, details, and language each speaker differentiates themselves from each other and forms their own unique way of sharing their story. In the two excerpts the two men use diction to expose their character and evoke emotions in the reader. Frederick Douglass describes his first challenge, when abandoned by his mistress's teachings and he has to come up with ways to become familiar with reading. "The plan which I adopted, and the by which I was most successful, was that of making friends with all the little white boys whom I met in the streets". BY choosing to say this Douglass then makes himself seen like a strong independent man. When things get tough he doesn't give up he simply finds another way to get it done and that is impressive. While Douglass uses diction to empower himself Malcolm X uses diction to lower his ego and describe himself before learning to read, "In the street, I had been the most articulate hustler out there I had commanded attention when I said something. But now trying to write simple English I not only wasn't articulate, I wasn't even functional". BY sharing this specific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Reflection About Reading If you ponder about it, most people wouldn't make it in this world we live in today if they didn't know how to read and write. Reading is everywhere and is a very important, as well as a necessary, part of the human life. Everyday activities include reading road signs, magazines, billboards, texts, newspapers, emails, books, labels and so on. Over the years of learning how to properly read and write, my family and teachers have definitely made a massive impact on my reading and writing techniques that I use today. Books have been an enormous part of my life, if not one of the biggest. They provided me with unforgettable memories that I am thankful for today as I use their advice throughout my life. Because of the fact that this was my very first day of preschool, my body was trembling under my clothes with fear. This would become my first literary memory. Man, did this day start great. Perfectly dressed from head to toe in my new favorite outfit, I strutted in boldly with a sweet smile on my face. The day started out with my classmates and I playing matching word games in a circle group together as a class. By taking turns, I got to hear other kids saying words aloud as well as myself when it was my turn. This experience helped me start learning to read because it taught me to pronounce the words and match it with what animal it paired with. As we did this activity over and over I realized that I could read all of the matching words. Our next activity was to learn bigger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Learning To Read And Write Analysis "I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over," is what Governor Jimmy Carter said during his Inaugural Address on January 12, 1971, but it was not always true. In the texts, "Superman and Me," by Sherman Alexie, and, "Learning to Read and Write," by Frederick Douglass there are clear problems of racial discrimination between both authors. There are many other similarities and differences throughout Frederick and Sherman's demanding upbringing, the most prominent are the main character's obstacles, goals, and the claims that the author makes in the book. The obstacles that Sherman and Frederick go through can be compared and contrasted quite efficiently. To begin with, they both face extreme racial and physical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To illustrate, they both have the innate urge to read and write. Another inference that can be made is that they are both mainly fueled by racial discrimination to read. Sherman uses it as an escape from the downcast life he lived, and Frederick also reads to escape the pain, but he also reads as an act of defiance. In the text Frederick says "Mistress, in teaching me the alphabet, had given me the inch, and no precaution could prevent me from taking the ell" (Douglass). Essentially he is saying that because his mistress had taken the first step he wasn't going to stop just because she said. One point that can be made is their inspiration to follow their goals. Alexie uses superman, "I learned to read using a Superman comic..." (Alexie), while Frederick uses a book called the Columbian Orator. The books helped them take different paths. The Columbian Orator depicted a slave that was defying his master; as a result, Frederick curious about the prospect of freedom. The Superman comics helped Sherman realize that no barrier can stop him. The two are very alike and different in terms of their goals and accomplishing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Malcom's Learning To Read In "Learning to Read" by Malcom X, I believe that the topic is about how important it is for one to know how to read. Malcom clearly expresses his thirst for knowledge and wanting to learn more, exclaming that he "was so fascinated that (he) went on– (he) copied the dictonary's next page." I also, after a lot of time, consider the audience to be readers whom are interested in how Malcom became such and active reader. Malcom expresses how he "became increasingly frustrated, at not being able to espress what (he) wanted to convey in letters that (he) wrote." After teaching himself he was no longer frustrated, he was able to "for the first time pick up a book and read" and "understand what the book was saying." As for the purpose of this ... • 10. Analysis Of Learning To Read By Malcolm X Learning how to read is one of the most common processes in the world. For me, learning how to read is the most useful ability that I have learned throughout my entire life. For others, most people learn how to read though different languages in different ways. For Malcolm X, he found reading to be appealing and devoted so much time to it. Malcolm X recounts his personal history of learning to read and how he finds reading to be the most important skill and influence everything in his life. He retells his history of reading several books and dictionaries and how th process slowly affected his life. He elaborates how reading increases a performance and efficiency to heighten their potential. In "Learning to Read, " by Malcolm X, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He repeats the various books that he read and it shows the variety of what he read. For example, he repeats the sentence with "I" and goes on to talk about reading about the horrors of slavery (165). It is not directly claimed, but it can be inferred that what he read had an effect on his goals in later life. This even further shows how using repetition reiterates a thought and drives the thought into the reader's mind. The extensive examples prove that Malcolm X uses repetition along with anecdotes to remind the reader that the events in the story happened to him and not anyone else. Although Malcolm X's repetition does a splendid job of conveying his message, the strongest tools in his arsenal are his anecdotes, or short stories. Because the text is a narrative, it tells mostly of real events in his life. He tells this narrative through anecdotes about his time in prison reading countless books and texts. For example, he recounts the time that he read the dictionary, reciting countless volumes of words just to learn new things (162). This demonstrates that all of these event that he mentions happen to him and were true. When Malcolm X uses this anecdote he is saying that a simple dictionary furthered a man that would become one of the most prominent civil rights activists. This further proves his point that learning to read is the most important and influential ability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Malcolm X's Learning To Read In the essay Learning to Read, Malcolm X details the process in which he learned to read and the tremendous effects it had on his perspective of the race issues in America. During his stay in prison, Malcolm X was given the opportunity to spend timeless hours learning as much as he could about reading and the English language. Furthermore, Malcolm X was fortunate enough to stay at a prison that had an extensive library. As a result, Malcolm X was able to discover and learn more about his own culture. Malcolm X learned that the African American culture is unfortunately cast in the shadows of the white population and neglected in textbooks as well as history. • 12. Learning To Read And Write By Frederick Douglass In the extract "Learning to Read and Write," Frederick Douglass tells the intended audience about his experiences as a slave living in his master's house and how he went through many trials to learn to read and write. In this excerpt, Frederick Douglass uses imagery, contrast, pathos, ethos, logos, an empathic tone, certain verb choice, and metaphors to inform African Americans of how crucial it is to learn how to read and write and to inform an audience of caucasian Americans of the wrongdoings that slavery has brought about. Frederick Douglass is often persuasive using pathos to get across to the intended audiences. Frederick Douglass had specific audiences that he wanted to either relate to or to get across a point to. African American people that had endured slavery were an intended audience because Frederick Douglass states things such as "Thus, after a long, tedious effort for years. I finally succeeded in learning how to read and write" and "I was compelled to resort to various stratagems". Those sentences by Frederick Douglass show that it was not an easy time for him and the levels or trials that he went through to be someone who was not illiterate. Frederick Douglass never once was one to give up on the need to learn to read and write, so that shows that Frederick Douglass thought that it was important for the African American people to be as well educated as the caucasian Americans were. The caucasian Americans were Frederick's intended audience because of Frederick's use of contrast throughout the extract. • 13. Frederick Douglass, Learning To Read And Read, Malcolm X Unequal Education Frederick Douglass, "Learning to Read and Write", Malcolm X, "Learning to Read". How does one compare the struggles between them. First off Mr. Douglass, "Learning to Read and Write" is not truly comparable with any of the other reading options, and to force comparisons would belittle Mr. Douglass's struggles to do so. Every other reading option had to endure unfair treatment and racism but no one was born into slavery as Mr. Douglass was. Whereas every other reading option had access to underfunded and unequal schools, Mr. Douglass was not afforded these options so order to learn he had to hide it for fear of being beat or killed. I looked forward to a time at which it would be safe for me to escape. I was too young to think of doing so immediately; besides, I wished to learn how to write,as I might have occasion to write my own pass. I consoled myself with the hope thatI should oneday find a good chance" (Douglass 3). • 14. Analysis Of Learning To Read By Frederick Douglass In his autobiographical essay "Learning to Read", Frederick Douglass illustrates the critical and empowering aspects of his life that contributed to his success and shaped his attitude towards learning. Douglass was a former slave who became emancipated and fought for the freedom and rights of enslaved Africans that experienced harsh and brutal treatment. During his early years, Douglass was illegally taught how to read and understand the alphabet by his master's wife. However, he was later abandoned by his mistress and was forced to learn on his own. Throughout this troubling moment of his life, Douglass turned to a book titled "The Columbian Orator" which allowed him to acknowledge the brutalities of slavery and use his knowledge to help other former slaves. Douglass's narrative depicts the remorseful attitude which he expressed towards his education and literacy. However, his knowledge later allowed him to escape the brutalities of slavery and contribute his efforts to fighting against it. Similarly to Douglass, I have experienced many positive and negative aspects of learning that have altered and shaped my attitude towards school. It was the fall of 2016 when my sophomore year of high school began. I recall walking into each of my classes on the first day of school and listening to my teachers provide brief introductions about themselves and the course work that would be taught throughout the year. I particularly recall walking into my Chemistry class and experiencing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It pounds inside my head, but I continue to struggle with the blankness, silence resting on the tip of my tongue where the word should be. • 16. The Importance Of The English Language Many Americans due to the fact that they have been in America they believe that the English language is easier to master than another language. Moreover, U.S college students believes that since they speak English frequently throughout the day they have mastered the English language. However, this may sound like common sense but it not true. Studies "from the U.S Department of Education shows that many high school seniors are graduating unable to read at grade level and one in four cannot read at even the most basic level" (abcnews.go.com). These studies completely refute the theory that mastering the skills of English is unnecessary. Malcolm X who "was one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America during the 1960s" even struggled with the English language (palomar.edu). In addition to that, he was born in America too. Evidence to the previous claim is in "Learning to Read," where Malcom X said it himself saying, "Trying to write simple English, I not only wasn't articulate, I wasn't even functional." Malcom X did not let that stop him. He performs some effective techniques in his pursuit of enhancement that college students emulate if they want to improve. Practicing, Reading, and learning new words are three effective techniques that college students should use to reach their mastery level of the English language. Many people may have heard the hackneyed quote that says, "Practice makes perfect." Well, Malcom X is a living testimony of that. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I remember at times when I had to go to school I used to cry and scream and just did not want to go. I used to get bad grades and couldn't read and was not a fluent writer. I used to struggle and cry while I watched the other kids do it easily. While growing up reading and writing were my worst subjects and I used to hate them I struggled in them. I can still remember that when I was in the first grade in the grade where I was supposed to actually learn to read and write my teacher didn't teach. Personal Narrative: Learning To Read Learning To Bring A Story To Life: My Journey in learning to Read Think back to that first magical moment where someone bought the story alive for you as a child. I can remember the first time my mother read to me a bedtime story before bed. That magical moment happened for me when she started to read and all of a sudden it was like the characters literally lifted off the page. Since Douglass was raised by a wealthy family who trusts him, he was allowed both time and resources (bread) to give him the opportunity to learn how to read (paragraph 1). Learning to read was an important part of his life because it allowed him to read "The Columbian Orator" and other sources. Reading allowed Douglass to understand the history of slavery. Reading to learn is taking in information that has been given and being able to apply to life situations. Many still argue today about the difference between learning to read and reading to learn. • 22. Importance Of Learning To Read And Writing In English Learning to read and write in English was a very tough accomplishment that I made in first grade. It was difficult because my first language is Spanish. With the help of my parents and my teachers in school, I had the chance to learn another language. It took time, practice and effort to accomplish my goal to read and write in another language. The earliest memory of literacy was spending time as a young child, with my mother, reading the Clifford the Big Red Dog book. Learning how to read this book felt like it took me six million years to do so, but eventually, I learned. As I read the Clifford book, I struggled to pronounce every single word. My mother tried her best to teach me how to sound each syllable. "Cli–fford, you ha–ve to eat up and get big," I said. I read it at a low volume, and my voice was shaky and cracking. I didn't know if I was reading it right. I had a rough time improving my reading level. Besides Clifford the Big Red Dog, I read The Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister. At home, I watched plenty of English movies and television shows such as Dora the Explorer to help develop my English literacy. I enjoyed watching those shows because they helped me a lot. In first grade, the teachers spend time teaching us how to learn the alphabet, how to sound each letter, how to pronounce words that we didn't understand and how to use words in complete sentences. I started to gain knowledge of what were adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns. Also, I learned that what makes a story is characters, a setting, a climax, etc. My encouraging English Teacher would meet up with each of us individually and made us read aloud so she can see what our reading level is. She saw that I struggled, so she used her teaching techniques to help me get better at reading. After I finished first grade, my teacher scheduled a parent meeting with my mother, and she gave my mother the option to send me to summer school so I can take an English class and receive more help so I could get better at writing and reading in English. Summer was taking forever. I felt frustrated because It felt that no matter how much I tried to learn how to read and progress in my reading level, it got way more difficult. Learning to Read and Write Essays Alana Roberts Essay I February 26th, 2013 "Learning to Read and Write" by Fredrick Douglas is a story about a slave breaking the bondage of ignorance by learning to read and write. During the course of 7 years Douglas discreetly teaches himself to read and write by means of stealing newspapers, trading food with poor white boys for knowledge and books, as well as copying his master's handwriting. Douglas learning to read gave him extreme awareness of his condition as he says "...I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy" (Page 168–169). With his new consciousness he suffered with depression envying his fellow slaves for their ... Douglas sheds light on how slave owners prayed to Christ, went to church every Sunday and yet mistreated people to the upmost degree and punished them for reading. Southerners often justified slavery by saying they were bringing Christianity to slaves. Christianity is a religion based on love and compassion for your fellow man. Since the Europeans did not believe the Africans were worthy to be in the same human category as them they dehumanized them relating them to animals. Although the bible says "we must never treat any part of God's creation with contempt. When we do, we are indirectly treating our Creator with contempt." If they did not believe slaves were worthy to be treated as God's creation then why did they push their religion on them? The answer is to keep them controlled and confused. Europeans stripped Africans of their traditions starting with their name, this in some degree made Africans like blank canvases ready to be painted anew. Christianity gave slaves hope that one day their situation will change if they prayed hard enough and abide by Christ words. It also gave them a brand new vision of what God should look like. White is good, Black is bad. In the Christian bible they saw Jesus as a white man so in turn they could have related the goodness of Christ to the "goodness" of their masters. Some slaves even argued about whose master was more kind. I guess this is what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reading aloud in class was part of the daily curriculum, and because the school I went to was Catholic, we'd often read the readings in front of the entire school during our weekly Mass. I remember reading, but I don't really remember the process of learning how to. Surely, being able to read correlates to being able to use shorthand for personal use and practical use. For example, when I'm taking notes in class or texting a friend, I'll often use 'bc' (because) in place of a semicolon. My sentences are often very long and full of grammatical errors, but the person I'm talking to always understands what's being said because we have created our own shorthand language. 'Probably' becomes 'probs' or 'prolly', 'though' becomes 'tho', 'very' becomes 'v', and of course, the classic; 'you' becomes 'u'. In addition to shorthand, proper punctuation loses all importance when I'm taking notes or texting. It's very rare that anything is properly capitalized, regardless of the person, place, or thing I'm talking about, and apostrophes and commas are completely dropped. The account of his journey entailed many concepts, such as freedom, uncertainty, but overall the narrative explores the theme of ignorance. Ignorance can be defined as being unfamiliar or unaware of surroundings as well as the absence of information. Before continuing it is important to clarify that stupidity and ignorance are not related and cannot be used interchangeably. The concept of ignorance is used as a tool ofslavery in the excerpt 'Learning to Read' of Douglass' autobiography. Douglass' narrative creates a visual of the reality of slavery and shows the relationship between freedom and knowledge and how slave holders used ignorance as a way to maintain power. In the excerpt, 'Learning to read' of Fredrick Douglass' autobiography, he tells his experiences of slavery and how he got to where he is. To give some context and background the narrative begins by describing the initial relationship that he had with his master. We cannot even go to school without some type of racial slur being said to you. The Justice Department here in society can investigate these types of action against someone not getting into school based on their skin color or national origin. There are a lot of people who believe that discrimination have disappeared and that's not just true. There is an unfair advantage here and that's not being able to go to school to learn to read and write. Just like Frederick Douglass said, " I succeeded in learning to read and write" ( Douglass 184). Minorities are still being mistreated, when it comes to learning in school. Frederick Douglass has to learn from his mistress to read and write. ( Douglass 185). All races, ethnicity and people of color should be able to learn and get an education. It seems to me all the education was going to all the Caucasians children and just like Douglas offered children bread in exchanged for knowledge ( Douglass 185). Every student has the right to an education free from discrimination that provides a quality education to learn. Discrimination is always occurring, when people are treated unfairly because of how or what they look like. In schools, discrimination can make it difficult for students to learn because they don't feel safe or accepted. Frederick did not feel safe, so his mistress taught him to read ( Douglass 185). As such, finding ways to fight discrimination is essential to ensuring students educational opportunity. Frederick Douglass got his opportunity by learning to write because of the ship board timber that was used for letters ( Douglass 188). Its hard for African–American students to be treated fairly in school because of their color. According to Hughes (2007) emergent readers are using early reading strategies in consistently, read easy patterned text, retell text with simple storyline, and respond to text at a literal level. Hughes (2007) also says literacy develops in young children through play, daily conversation and interactions with text of all kinds. Many children come with emergent literacy skills; can recognize signs and labels, scribble letters, retell stories by pointing at pictures and talking about them, and some have varying degrees of phonemic and phonological awareness. This essay will define and explain implication for each theory in learning to read. Cueing Systems The cueing system is made up of four cueing systems: Grapho–phonemic, Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic. Each is used in language development and are important for communication.
