European settlers. Over the course of time, in an act justified by the flawed concept of "Manifest Destiny," these indigenous people were forcibly
removed from their land. Since then, in issues such as the shameful practice of slavery, voting rights, and general segregation, racism has continued to
infiltrate the social dynamic of our country. This dilemma still persists today. It is evidenced in scenarios such as the current tension between the

With the recent upheaval in Ferguson, Missouri, racial tensions have taken a center stage role in the daily lives of many Americans. Color–blindness
remains the gut response to inequality, but this ignores the fact that heritage makes us inevitably different. Thus, the question, why does society
continue to assimilate other races into a color–blind whiteness instead of recognizing and affirming difference?
In modern society, racism is on a fast track to becoming a buzz word. Terms such as "cracker" and the "n–word" as racial slurs hurt feelings, but that
does not make them racist. The racism comes from the historical context of the word and its reinforcement through time. "Cracker" is an example of
racial prejudice but not racism because the word originally means someone in the south that refused to integrate after the civil war. However, the
"n–word" is both racial prejudice and racist due to its historically oppressive context of slavery and association with the status of black bodies as
animals of domination. While everyone is hurt by racial prejudice, this divergence is critical when addressing issues of race. This difference removes all
chances of reverse racism that many whites claim as a means of victimization in order to claim their oppression of minorities is reciprocal. Essentially,

The ideal situation when I encountered a black person was to, if possible, avoid conversation. Now, the reason this came to be is because their actions

racism. The increase tensions between the African American community and Caucasian community has been at an ultimate high recently. The

Recently in class we observed the controversial film A Raisin in the Sun which initially was a play written by Lorraine Hansberry in the late
1950s. Lorraine was the youngest of her siblings and grew up in rural Chicago back during the era of segregation. It was evident that her hard trials
growing up directly correlated with this film as the setting of the plot occurred in her hometown, Chicago, right before the Civil Rights Movement

Ferguson, Missouri is a city approximately 20 miles north of St Louis, MO. Part of St. Louis County, MO, Ferguson's police department is composed
of only two percent black officers despite the city's demographic at 65 percent black (The Washington Post, 2014). With an overwhelming statistic such
as this, civilian–officer tensions are, unfortunately, unavoidable. Worse still, it would seem that these tensions are a result of racial conflicts. For at
least the past decade, incidents of racial tensions have surfaced between the civilian and law enforcement communities (Ross as cited in Lowery,
Leonnig, & Berman, 2014). Residents of the Ferguson area describe a long standing issue regarding profiling and targeting, in particular when it
comes to traffic stops, even noting the rarity of any civil communication at all between the two parties (Crawford as cited in Lowery, Leonnig, &
Berman, 2014). For years, the issue of race has gone unacknowledged and a lack of trust in regard to law enforcement officials has prevailed
