Essay about Arthurian Legends Effects on English Society
What role did the great King Arthur play in the way English Literature is perceived? Did King
Arthur honestly exist? "Whether King Arthur existed or not is doubtful. However if King Arthur did
exist, then he would have lived sometime between 400 AD and 600 AD, a time of turmoil in Britain
following the Roman withdrawl. And a time when written literature did not exist, therefore events
during this period are only known about from folklore passed down several generations before being
written down, or from modern archeology giving insights from excavations of sites. If there was
ever a true King Arthur in history, he would probably be Romano–British warleader, probably
named Artorius, which is a Roman name for Arthur. Though the Roman ... Show more content on

The Arthurian Legends were an effect of the Romantic Era and resulted in abstract thinking, as well
as the arts including music, painting, poetry, and writing. The birth of the Arthurian Legends came
from Celtic mythology and medieval romance, while the existence of magic confirms the conception
of artistic intellect. Whether or not King Arthur truly existed, his influence dramatically changed the
English society and English Literature to its current form (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1).
The Arthurian Legend is seen to be extremely influential in benefitting the English people during the
Romantic Era. Even if King Arthur is a fictional character of myth and legend in England, his
childhood, countless glories and achievements as the king of Camelot, and the final down fall of his
strong empire validated his importance to English literature. Proof of King Arthur's existence would
possibly solidify the impact he had on the English culture (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The early
childhood of King Arthur seems to be the foundation of the epic journey of his life. Even though his
achievements as a child were brief, they were extremely important to King Arthur's outlook on life,
as well as character. As an optimistic squire, King Arthur had hopes of one day overcoming his
social standing. He received his wish when he unknowingly pulled the magical sword out of the
stone.

Tales Of King Arthur
Since the romanticizing of the Arthurian legends by Geoffery of
Monmouth, the historian, during the twelfth century, the legendary 'king
of England' has been the source of inspiration for kings, poets, artists
and dreamers alike. The most famous work is probably Sir Thomas Malory's
Le Morte d'Arthur, completed around 1470, and published in many abridged
and complete versions. Malory's work contains in one the legend that had
been continually added to over the years by many different writers who
introduced such elements as Sir Galahad, and the ill–fated love affair
between Lancelot and Guinevere. Geoffery of Monmouth had been the first
to put the legends surrounding Arthur into literary form in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When Guinevere first
appears in early Welsh stories, she is the daughter of a giant, but
later she becomes the daughter of King Leodegrance of the West Country.
In her original Welsh form of Gwenhwyfar, she was an folk figure before
being connected to Arthur, and may originally have been a lesser
goddess.
Geoffery located Camelot at the very real Roman town of Caerleon in
South Wales; Malory placed it at Winchester, which was the headquarters
of the kings of Wessex and remained a royal seat after the Norman
invasion. Other stories place it near Arthur's supposed birthplace at
Tintagel. Cadbury Castle in Somerset has been named as another possible
location of Camelot, which has been revealed during excavations to have
been occupied during the time of Arthur and to have been the
headquarters of a leader, if not a king. The real Arthur may have been
buried at Glastonbury Abbey, which lays around twelve miles north–west
of the castle. It is said to have been a secret burial, so the news of
his death would not raise Saxon morale; the mystery may have given rise
to the rumors that he still lived on. In 1190, the monks of Glastonbury
Abbey reported that they had dug up a coffin made from a hollow log, and
a lead cross inscribed with the

James Agee and Walker Evans Essay
James Agee and Walker Evans
Fortune Magazine, in July and August of 1936, sent James Agee and Walker Evans to research a
story on sharecropping. In the preface of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Agee describes it as "a
curious piece of work." They were to produce "an article on cotton tenantry in the United States, in
the form of a photographic and verbal record of the daily living and environment of an average
white family of tenant farmers," (IX). James Agee and Walker Evans set out to write and photograph
an article for a magazine, and ended up experimenting with the form of the novel itself.
James Agee was born in 1909 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was in the urban middle class, so he had
no experience with cotton farming. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Agee and Evans set out to publish an article in Fortune Magazine, but when they brought back their
work to the editors, they were rebuked. The "article" was over 400 pages of controversial writing
and even various book editors refused to publish it as a novel. Finally in 1941 it was published by
Mifflin in Massachusetts after the author was forced to take out a few outlawed words in the state.
They failed in their original mission to produce an "article," but undoubtedly presented a
"photographic and verbal record" of the average white southern tenant farmer families. By living
with three different families for four weeks, Evans depicted their innermost sorrows through his
photographs, and Agee portrayed and emboldened their spirit by his written words. The novel itself
was an experiment in form, with Evans' photos all placed in the front without captions, rather than
dispersed throughout the novel. Even in the text, Agee continually stops himself mid–description
and enters into a stream–of–consciousness describing the difficulties of articulating accurately the
tenant families true expressions. For these reasons, it was considered a failure when it was
published, but also for the same reasons it was considered an amazing success twenty years later in
the 1960s.
In the Preface, Agee conveys that this "is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in
human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men
"Let Us Now Praise Famous Men," was written by James Agee and Walker Evans. The story is
about three white families of tenant farmers in rural Alabama. The photographs in the beginning
have no captions or quotations. They are just images of three tenant farming families, their houses,
and possessions. "The photographs are not illustrative. They, and the text, are coequal, mutually
independent, and fully collaborative." (87) The story and the photographs contain relationships
between them; in the essay I am going to inform you about the interpretations of the relationships
between the readings of James Agee and some of the pictures by Walker Evans. ... Show more

In the picture on page (31) you see a small, wooden room, in the middle of this room is a sturdy
table with a peculiar tablecloth upon it; on this sturdy table is a small, glass, oil burning lamp. The
lamp's oil, interpreted to be their lives, hopes, and dreams. This oil is either half full or half empty;
surely I believe it is half full. In the reading, the lamp's oil signifies life, hope, security and safety.
James Agee places these things at the center of the family's existence. This shows that the author of
"The Country Letter" places high respect towards these aspects in life. Their goals were to live life
to the fullest, no one else, but themselves could make them happy.
Of such ultimate, such holiness of silence and peace that all on earth and within extremest

by utter quietness succeed in not disturbing this silence, in not so much as touching this plain of

The Crucible and The Salem Witch Trials by Arthur Miller...
Arthur Miller wrote plays as a way of showing people the real picture of what life was really like
during the Great Depression and after World War II. Before the Great Depression many Americans
were living in a significant time period, the Roaring Twenties. People had radios, automobiles, and
movies with sounds. Then it all suddenly came to an end with the Stock Market Crash, leading to
the Great Depression. During the Great Depression, Americans faced poverty, and had no income
because jobs weren't available. Throughout his life Miller influenced many people with his plays,
and his contributions to this day because people want to read and understand what was truly
happening in past history. For example, "The Crucible" is a play about the ... Show more content on

However, their marriage spiraled downward and they eventually divorced. While Miller was married
to his first wife, he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, who later would become his wife. Marilyn
Monroe was a great influence in his life inspiring him to write "After the Fall" (1964), which was an
open portrayal of his marriage with Monroe.
Arthur's purpose for writing literature was to unmask the problems and issues of capitalism so the
people could have a fair understanding of the truth but in his plays rather than newspapers and
magazines. In the nineteen fifty's, Miller was starting to go downhill. During this time, one of
Millers most popular and recognized works; The Crucible was playing on Broadway. The Crucible
showed a relationship with the Communist Red Scare that America was facing during this. The
Communist Red Scare took place shortly after the end of World War I. It was a nationwide fear of
communist, socialists, and other fears America was facing. Since the Red Scare was such a big deal
to many Americans during this time in American history, Millers face drastically declined. With the
production of Millers, The Crucible, it brought more attention and suspicion on Miller. In the middle
of the nineteen fifty's, he was called to testify in front of the House Committee on Un–American
Activity, today known

Essay on Suffering in Photographs
Suffering in Photographs
Photographs are used to document history, however selected images are chosen to do so. Often
times these images graphically show the cruelty of mankind. In her book, Regarding the Pain of
Others, Susan Sontag asks, "What does it mean to protest suffering, as distinct from acknowledging
it?" To acknowledge suffering is just to capture it, to point it out and show somebody else that it
exists. In order to protest suffering, there has to be some sort of moral decision that what is shown in
the photograph is wrong, and a want from the viewer to change that.
Sontag says that throughout history, things focused on in art and history tend to be the "product of
wrath, divine or human." There is much art showing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strange need is not a new thing, since this focus on violence went all the way back to Christian
and pagan art.
In war, photography and art again serve the purpose of acknowledging and sometimes protesting
suffering. In the First World War cameras were used for military intelligence, to capture an event.
"The caption of a photograph is traditionally neutral informative: a date, a place, names." A
photograph is supposed to just record what happened and not takes sides. However, "it is always the
image that someone chose; to photograph is to frame, and to frame is to exclude." So the photograph
is supposed to be neutral, but the photographer is still deciding what details to focus on. The caption
has just facts on it, because supposedly that is what the photograph is recording. While it is true that
photographs cannot explain everything themselves, they do serve as visual aids to, what otherwise
be, a pallid world.
Goya was an artist who made etchings called The Disasters Of War. These etchings showed the
horrible things that were done by Napoleon's soldiers. They were made in order to shock the viewer
and make them feel the pain of what happened. These sketches did not go in narrative order or show
exact details of an event, they were just images showing that bad things like that happen during war.
Normal captions have dates and places written which detach the viewer from the pain of the picture.
On his sketches,

New advancement in technology has made it easy for many CEOs to have the opportunity to loot
their companies, and to engage in accounting irregularities. Technology has made improvements to
the way a company does business with others, and also it has opened up ethical concerns for the way
a company conducts their business. "Recently, accounting professionals have been placed under
immense pressure by changes in the size and scope of financial markets" (Love, 2007 para. 1).
Companies use the financial reporting system to communicate the financial effects of the company
to outsiders (Love, 2007). This paper will discuss the legal, ethical, and technological concerns of

Enron, a multinational company avoided showing their true financial statements for several years
with the help of their auditor. Arthur Anderson, the company's auditor signed off on the validity of
the company's accounts despite the inaccuracies in the financial statements (Accounting ethics,
2011, para. 12). As a result of Arthur Anderson engaging in unethical practices, Enron's shareholders
lost their money when the company went into bankruptcy, Arthur Andersen employees lost their
jobs, and the company went out of business (Accounting ethics, 2011, para. 12). Another example is
Adelphia founder, and former CEO John Rigas. He was found guilty of looting Adelphia in 2005.
(Mallor, Barnes, Bowers, & Langvardt, 2010). Rigas, along with his son, and CFO Scott, was
accused of using the company as their on private ATM to provide fifty million dollars in cash

crimes Rigs received fifteen years in prison, and his son, and former CFO Scott, received twenty

As a response to these major accounting scandals new reforms, regulations, and calls for higher
education have been introduced to deter any individual from engaging in unethical behavior.

Dreams and Success in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman
In Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman, Miller probes the dream of Willy Lowman while
making a statement about the dreams of American society. This essay will explore how each
character of the play contributes to Willy's dream, success, and failure.
Willy is the aging salesman whose imagination is much larger than his sales ability. Willy's wife,
Linda, stands by her husband even in his absence of realism. Biff and Happy follow in their father's
fallacy of life. Willy's brother, Ben is the only member of the Loman family with the clear vision
necessary to succeed. Charlie and his son Benard, on the other hand, enjoy better success in life
compared ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But in the beautiful, ironic complexity of her creation, she is also Willy's and their sons' destroyer. In
her love Linda has accepted Willy's Greatness and his dream, but while in her admiration for Willy
her love is powerful and moving, in her admiration for his dreams, it is lethal. She encourages
Willy's dream, yet she will not let him leave her for the New Continent, the only realm where the
dream can be fulfilled. She want to reconcile father and son, but she attempts this in the context of
Willy's false values. She cannot allow her sons to achieve that selfhood that involves denial of these
values" (Gordon p. 316). Linda is also caught up in Willy's lies and therefore does nothing but help
fuel the fire in the inferno of their dreams and ambitions. She lets this whole masquerade continue
right in front of her instead of doing something to stop their out of control lies.
Also, Biff the oldest son, continues to search for his purpose in life. Due mainly to all the "hot air"
Willy always feeds him, Biff continues to stumble in his fight for life. Biff has never had the ability
to hold down a job very long due to his inability to take orders and do his time in the trenches before
becoming a success at a particular job.
Richard J. Foster states, "Biff, who in the play as an amplification or reflection of Willy's problems,

Essay on Conflict in All My Sons
Conflict in All My Sons
The conflict in the play "All My Sons" in embodied by two different sets of values. The older
generation represented by Joe and Kate strongly believed in family values and Pursue of the
American dream at any cost. In contradiction, Joe and Anne express the younger generation's ethics
and ideals clearly shown in the thoughts of idealism that money is not the most important thing in
life. Even though the younger generation's ideals are sometimes thought of as being irrational and in
conflict with reality, all throughout the play their validity is greater.

child they had raised. Most of these gaps are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The readers of the play know that even though Chris thought about it in a moment of weakness he
would not forget his ethics and therefore would never do something that he believes to be wrong.
There is no point of Chris trying to change his mind because the passion he speaks in about these
ideals will never die.
Chris and Anne did not have their own family yet, which was an excuse for the older generation to
contradict them although they knew the difference between right and wrong. In this play the word
"father" to Chris means righteousness and integrity. If one cannot look beyond one's personal circle
they are condemned to an ending that is a tragic moment of realization that may bring an ending
similar to Joe's. Another morality issue, which Chris has to deal with in regards to his father in
taking responsibility. It is possible that Chris would have shown signs of forgiveness if Joe were to
take responsibility for his actions. Instead of doing so once again he was hiding behind doing good
only for the benefits of his inner circle. "There's nothing he could do that I wouldn't forgive.
Because he's my son. Because I'm his father and he's my son." In these words Keller expresses his
own optimism that no matter what he is to do Chris will always understand, and forgive. That was
not the case. If Keller could not forgive himself, why did he believe that Chris would ever be able to

Essay on The Battle of Vimy Ridge: The Birth of The...
One of Canada's largest military endeavors was the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One. It
was a fierce battle between Germans and Canadians. Canada was trying to take over the German
controlled ridge, which ran from northwest to southwest between Lens and Arras, France. Its highest
point was 145 feet above sea level, which was exceptionally helpful in battle because of the very flat
landscape. Already over 200,000 men had fallen at Vimy, all desperately trying to take or defend this
important and strategic ridge. As a result of its success in taking the ridge, Canada gained a lot more
than just the strategic point. Canada was united as a nation, and the victory changed the way other
counties viewed them. Canadians no longer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only did the battle affect the way Canadian's allies saw them, it also affected their enemies.
German veterans have told stories about the war, revealing that some Germans feared Canadian
soldiers more than soldiers of any other country. At the start of the war, Canadians were not really
viewed as independent Canadian soldiers, but rather, soldiers of the British military force. As a
result of their achievements at Vimy Ridge, Canada was granted their own seat at the signing of the
Treaty of Versailles after the war. Clearly, the battle of Vimy Ridge created Canada as a nation in the
eyes of other countries.
The feats achieved by Canadians were incredible, and more influential than anything they had done
before. Vimy was one of the German's most heavily guarded areas, and it was thought that it was
impossible to over take. However, when the Canadians did take it, they captured the most artillery
and guns since the start of the war. They also managed to take 4,000 Germans as prisoners of war.
Past battles at Vimy witnessed over 200,000 causalities. During the Canadian attack on the ridge,
they lost 3,598 soldiers while the Germans suffered over 20,000 causalities. Canadians had much to
be proud of after Vimy, a feeling they did not often get while fighting under British command.
Critics question whether Vimy aided Canada's birth as a nation. "It is difficult to avoid the
conclusion that if Vimy Ridge had been captured

The Internal and External Conflicts of Willy Loman Essay
Individuals explore their responses to conditions of internal and external conflicts throughout
literature. Going in depth to a character allows the reader to better understand that character's
internal and external conflicts. Arthur Miller uses this technique in several of his plays, including
Death of a Salesman. Miller portrays the character of Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman through
his internal and external conflicts. The internal conflict begins with Willy's expectations for his sons
and The Woman. Willy struggles throughout the play with having extremely high expectations for
his sons, Happy and Biff. Happy and Willy get along well because they are most alike of the two
sons. Happy has the same materialistic mindset as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reader can see this when The Woman says, "I'll put you right through to the buyers," (Miller
39). Thus, Willy has multiple expectations for his sons and The Woman. The internal conflict
continues with Willy's dreams. The beginning of the play tells us that it is about dreams (Eisinger 2).
Willy dreams of the American dream and family dreams. Willy characterizes the American dream as
success, which creates conflict within himself. Willy longs for the dream so much that he focuses
solely on achieving this goal that he loses desire for anything less. Willy interprets his desire for
success when he defines Dave Singleton:
And he was eighty–four years old and he'd drummed merchandise in thirty–one states. And old
Dave he'd go up to his room, y'understand, put on his green velvet slippers – I'll never forget – and
pick up his phone and call the buyers, and without ever leaving his room at the age of eighty–four,
he made his living. And when I saw that, I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could
want. (Miller 81)
Dave Singleton is a model for Willy because he shows that a salesman can be remembered, loved,
and helped in many different places in the country (Eisinger 4). The success of Dave is the
American dream that Willy desires. The American dream of having everything one wants.
Because Willy wants this corrupt dream so much, he longs for his family to have the same dream.
Happy does however,

The Once And Future King
The Once and Future King
The legend of King Arthur is a tale as timeless as any other found in literature today. Introduced to
us by Sir Thomas Malory during the fifteenth century in Morte d' Arthur, it was the first complete
tale of Arthur's life. Countless portrayals followed for any reader interested in the tale of the boy
who was destined to become King. The Once and Future King by T.H. White is certainly the most
popular representation of the immortal legend of King Arthur. It is similar to the tales woven before
it but White gives new meanings and modernization to the traditional story through his unique
perspectives and writing. White takes the reader on a journey in the past enriched by the knowledge

Merlin quickly corrects the boy by telling him his notion "would be extremely
presumptuous", and he "would be conquered for it" (38). Merlyn wants the young
boy to understand that might is not the answer to the problems in the world. He hopes that when the
young boy becomes King he will be capable of correcting such faults with the world. This is in
contrast to Wart's encounter with the King of the Moat while on an adventure lesson devised by
Merlin. The King declares that 'there is only power';, and 'power of the body decides everything in
the end, and only might is right'; (48). For a young boy, the lessons in life are difficult to understand
without experience. Wart's experience will soon come, for the section ends when he pulls the sword
from the stone and becomes King. Merlyn is the first to address him as King, leaving behind the boy
once known as Wart.
The next section entitled The Queen of Air and Darkness tells of Arthur's war to defend his title and
secure his throne. His fight to claim his rights leads Arthur to a battle within himself. At one point
Arthur declares to his subjects 'Why can't you harness might so that it works for right'; (254). He
believes that in his pursuit to conquer his foes, he could use might to turn the bad things into
something good. Merlyn is aware of his naivete but knows that time will bring knowledge or failure.

In the 1920s when the country was prospering, Arthur Miller based his ideas on that perspective
partly because that is the time period he grew up in. It was an age of distorted values caused by the
pressure of the moment, material richness, making money, and then showing it off to everyone
(Arthur Miller, Death of a Salesman). Clearly reflected in the character of Willy is a theme that
made him many promises, and he felt like society owed him for all his efforts. A valuable lesson can
be learned about researching promises society can make and taking a look beneath the surface.
Without adjustment, creativity, and a flexible but focused drive, Willy could have never succeeded
in his occupation. For some reason he only heard what he wanted to which would later lead him
down an unsuccessful road, with no rewards for the years of hard work. In the end, himself and his
false expectations destroyed him because his dreams were so limited and narrow (Death of a

King Arthur Essay
King Arthur The Arthurian legends are well known in today's society. However, very few people
know of the "real" Arthur –– who he was and what his accomplishments were. This paper will
establish a difference between legend and truth, show evidence to support and explain who the real
Arthur was, and shed some light on the sometimes confusing Arthurian legends. To establish any
sort of idea that there was, in fact, a "real" Arthur, it is imperative to look over the legendary Arthur
and his impact on different cultures. Arthur's beginnings are shrouded in mystery, though it is
generally accepted that he is the bastard child of Uther Pendragon and Ygerna. Ygerna was not

However, after the Normans came to Britain, there was an intensification of the Arthurian legend,
possibly due to the fact that the Normans saw Arthur as a hero against the Saxons and therefore
glorified him in their text. Arthur is considered a hero in almost every text that mentions him. In
spite of this, though, more was written about adventures of his knights than of him personally
(Chambers 155). It is said that Arthur existed not only to kill Saxons but also to be a Christian
champion who killed pagans as well. Previous to anything the romantic French poets wrote about
him, Arthur was glorified in writing for conducting aggressive wars, during which he conquered
"fantastical" places. If he had, in fact, conquered real places, there would have been more written on
these conquests since by the time he was active it would have been more controversial for him to
attack and conquer foreign countries. However, there are three major battles that Arthur is connected
to. One of the most controversial is the war that Arthur fought with the Roman empire. It is
suggested by Geoffrey of Monmouth that Arthur's motivation to fight the Roman emperor did not
come from the fact only that the emperor was seen as a pagan and sinner against God, but also
because there was a rivalry between Arthur's "new" nation as opposed to Rome's old, worn–out
nation. The Roman war is considered a "principal artery" of Arthurian legend, possibly next only to

Recital Review and Report
The recital I attended was on Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 7:00pm located in the Recital Hall. This
performance was a Diploma Recital for Hyejin Joo, who is a Performer of Piano. The pieces Ms.
Joo performed were the Italian Concerto in F Major, BWV 971, Fantasiestücke, Op. 12, and the
Suite bergamasque (1905).
The first piece performed was the Italian Concerto in F Major, BWV 971 which was composed by
Johann Sebastian Bach within the years 1685–1750. This piece has three individual movements,
Allegro, Andante, and Presto. The names of the individual pieces translated to modern English are:
brisk or rapid in tempo (cheerful), moderately slow and even, and quickly, rapidly; at a rapid tempo.
The names of each individual movement describe how each part of the overall piece is to be played.
Within the first movement, it was detectable when she played full scales; it was easier to notice after
learning the G and F scales in class. The beginning was very fast, and although it was upbeat, it
almost felt like a rushed sort of urgency within the first piece. Andante seemed to be a sad piece. As
it was slow and evenly played, it had a melancholy feel to it. The underlying base clef kept a steady
deep tone that despite when the treble notes picked up a bit, it kept it from becoming cheerful in the
slightest. The third piece, presto, was very fast paced. There was a distinct difference between when
she played piano p compared to when she played mezzo forte mf. I could also recognize

The Confusion Between Illusion and Reality in Death of a...
The line between reality and illusion is often blurred in Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman.
Whether it is incorporated in the content or the actual structure, this struggle between recognizing
reality from illusion turns into a strong theme; it eventually leads to the downfall of Willy and his
family. Willy is incapable of recognizing who he is, and cannot realize that he, as well as his sons, is
not capable of being successful in the business world. Happy and Biff both go through some battle
between reality and illusion that cause a collapse in some part of their lives. The line between
Willy's flashbacks and current time also send him into turmoil when he cannot distinguish between
the two. Willy believes that he is much more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theme, confusion between reality and illusion leads to a downfall, applies here because in a way
suicide is the ultimate downfall. Charley, a voice of reason, counter argues that "nobody's worth
nothin' dead" (98). Charley is consistently in reality and is one of the most successful people in the
play. So, the fact that Charley recognizes reality in the harshest and brightest light is what kept him
from experiencing a downfall in his life. If the Willy was not confused about the reality of his life,
there may not have been such a great fall when his life amounted to less than he expected, and when
Biff's life did not turn out to be what he had hoped. Apart from Willy's delusion of his own success,
he also sees his sons as great successes in the business world, and that they will amount to so much
in their lives. These boys cannot be successful because they have been "[blown] so full of hot air
[they] could never stand taking orders from anybody" (131). Willy's illusions about his sons not only
ruined Willy's life, but it caused these boys to have a false sense of reality, which is the theme. This
false sense of reality leads to their downfall in the business world because Willy had built them up
so high that they believed they should be the one giving the orders, not taking them. When Willy
tells his boys "together [you] could absolutely lick the civilized world" (64), this is an example of
the way Willy falsely sees his boys and fills their

Death of a sales man Essay
No one has a perfect life. Everyone has conflices that they must face sooner or later. The ways in
which people deal with these personal conflicts can differ as much as the people themselves. Some
insist on ignoring the problem as long as possible, while some attack the problem to get it out of the
way.
The book of a Salesman, is written by Arthur Miller. It takes place at Willy Loman's – A 63 year old
once popular salesman who's lost his popularity and sales, not to mention his mind, small house in
New York surrounded by apartments. Biff, a thirty–four year old son of Willy who has been
searching for himself while working on farms in the west to the dismay of his father, returns from
the west to visit his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, in America, education is very important to succeed. The Loman family doesn't have
concern with there sons education, especially Biff. Throughout their lives Willy devotes himself to
coaching them, almost like an older teammate, in the technigues for winning the striving game. He
stresses those tactics he believes to be the keys to achievement: popularity, congeniality, physical
powess, and attractiveness. Willy never tells the boys they need skill, he sedulously encourages
them. An example would be when when Willy says, "That's why I thank Almighty God you're both
built like Adonises. Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who
creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead." (Act One, page 33) Charley's family
exemplifies conformity accepting both the goal of success and the approved routes to its attainment.
To Charley the value he places on education is more and more often the path to occupational
achievement. Bernard learns his lessons well; he is groomed by the school system. Bernard is the
symbolic import of his career, the meaning of appearing as a lawyer before the Supreme Court. The
scene between Bernard and Willy in Charley's office and the ensuing conversation Willy has with
Charley underlina again the distinctions between a fulfilling and an unfulfilling conformity. We have
the contrast of charm vs. competitence, seeming vs. doing: WILLY: The

Essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an unknown author in the 14th century, can be called a
timeless work of poetry. It exudes a certain fantastic quality that, despite its age of over 500 years,
still appeals to modern audiences. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable to
state that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? Because of the similarities in
plot and style with so much modern fantasy, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight could be placed in
the same category with that genre, though the uses of doing so are questionable.
In plot, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight has elements which are similar to much modern ... Show

From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and
say essentially, "I'll see you in a year," (ll. 423–456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in
the narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446–2462) finishes the plot
as it began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy,
particularly from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have
essentially made their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White,
Blood Red and its several follow–ups. To increase the fairy–tale style feel of the story, the Green
Knight is called an elf (ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily
be called a fairy tale.
Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well.
The delightful accounts of the changing of the seasons are in part to indicate the passage of time, but
also add mood to the whole of the piece. Present–day fantasy writer Patricia McKillip has been
critically lauded for "lush imagery" and stories described as "atmospheric... and filled with rich
imagery." Clearly the descriptions are an important part of the style that makes modern

Mist of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Mist of Avalon breaks through many stereotypes but also strengthens some in some ways. One
stereotype that was torn down was that women are not as strong as men. This is proved to be wrong
when they have Morgaine fighting men and actually being victorious. This movie also breaks the
stereotype that women can't be in power. Most women in this movie hold very high positions. For
example, Viviane is the high goddess of Avalon. Also Morgaine is her second in command.
Although this movie breaks some stereotypes it also reinforces them by putting the blame on a
women for not being able to give the king an heir. Although in this case it really is her fault nobody
knows this information and automatically blames her. These are just a few of the reasons that Mist
of Avalon strengthens and breaks through common stereotypes.
In Mist of Avalon Gwenhwyfar is a sympathetic character because she has so much going against
her. Although she does have her own wrong doings they are acted on out of hurt. For example, she is
cursed with not being able to give the king an heir and this causes turmoil in their marriage. Also in
the end she gets even more bad things thrown her way and then repents for her sins and ends things
with Lancelot. The film doesn't treat physical beauty in a positive or negative way. It is very neutral
about outer beauty compared to inner. This can be proved because Morgos was pretty but she was an
evil person and both Viviane and Morgaine weren't the most

comes from his father always putting him second. If Biff and Happy where to be categorized in a

Biff dropped out of high school he went to many jobs he said, "I spent six or seven years after high
school trying to work myself up. Shipping clerk, salesman, business of one kind or another." This
shows how Biff is indecisive on what he wants to do in a career choice. Huff Post Teen says that
Generation Z would work at one place of business then move on to another. Unlike other typical
generations who stick to one place work there for a long time then retire. In the article,
Characteristics of the Greatest Generation they quote, "the 41st president of the united states, was a

This proves that unlike Biff generation GI was a committed generation who got the job done.

Public Sentiments Concerning Chinese Immigration Essay
Public Sentiments Concerning Chinese Immigration In 1852, there were over 20,000 Chinese
immigrants living in California (Franks). Americans reacted very negatively to this influx, and their
negative sentiments were made apparent in the California Supreme Court's People v. Hall verdict,
which rendered Chinese testimony unreliable. Then, in 1882, President Chester Arthur signed the
Chinese Exclusion Act, a law that prohibited Chinese laborers from entering the United States
(Foner, 651). From the 1850s up to the Exclusion Act of 1882, Americans felt increasingly negative
sentiments towards the Chinese. As illustrated through newspaper and magazine depictions along
the Pacific Coast, the Americans perceived the Chinese as inferior and ... Show more content on

The scenery is drawn with many dark shades on the walls and floor, depicting it as an alley or a
similarly secluded location. Here, the Chinese man partakes in his devious acts, away from the

presumably as a result of the Chinese man's negative influence. The little boy is underage and is
engaging in immoral behavior. The Chinese man has corrupted him simply through association, and
by smoking a cigar at his age he has been corrupted. This depiction shows the underlying perception
that the Chinese were an infestation that were negatively influencing and corrupting the population.
This perception of the Chinese as a menace is also apparent in the image "Amusing the Child" from
The Wasp. This picture depicts the Chinese man as a diabolical creature: He crawls around on four
legs like a dog, and has large scaly hands with sharp, thin nails. The Chinese man wears tattered
clothing and from behind, a long, red devil's tale extends from his body. Also, the image has two

is a baby, which represents the Pacific Coast. The Chinese man's appearance not only degrades him,

Social and political critique and commentary in Bonnie and Clyde
"The fact that the story is set 35 years ago doesn't mean a thing. It had to be set sometime. But it was
made now and it's about us." – Roger Ebert 1
At the time of its release in 1967, Bonnie and Clyde was the subject of intense debate. While the
American film critic Roger Ebert hailed it as a milestone in American moviemaking, Bosley
Crowther, another critic, referred to it as "a cheap piece of bald–faced slapstick
Comedy". 2 It was called the sleeper hit of the decade, and gained extreme notoriety for its breakage
of traditional cinematic taboos, in that it showed rather explicitly both sex and especially, raw and
brutal violence. It greatly surprised both the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within this rather traditional framework however, Bonnie and Clyde makes several compelling
statements about 1960's America. [This is too short to be a paragraph on its own.]
Violence almost defines Bonnie and Clyde. It runs like a silver thread through the entire film.
Graphic violence is today a rather common and somewhat natural characteristic of modern cinema,
but before Bonnie and Clyde, it certainly was not. Arthur Penn introduced it in 1967. Before Bonnie
and Clyde violence in film was hinted at or just implied through various sorts of acting techniques.
Arthur Penn decided to show the audience the real, brutal and raw side to violence, using brilliant
camerawork but more importantly, top–notch special effects and masterful visual skills. In Bonnie
and Clyde the violence never feels fake, but terrifyingly real. Take for example the first graphic
scene of the film, in which Clyde shoots a store owner's face clean off, as he tries jump aboard the
robbers' getaway car. The man's head basically explodes, splattering blood and pieces of brain all
over the car window, and Penn shows us, the audience, this (although not in a Tarantinto–splasher–
like way, but nevertheless) in a quite unromantic but very powerful and dramatic way. The scene is
almost reminiscent of the famous scene from Battleship Potemkin 3 where the mother is shot in the
face, and her

Did King Arthur Truly Exist? Essay
Did King Arthur Truly Exist?
Who was King Arthur? Most people would tell of a great King; a devoted circle of heroic knights;
mighty castles and mightier deeds; a time of chivalry and courtly love; of Lancelot and Guinevere;
of triumph and death. Historians and archaeologists, especially Leslie Alcock, point to shadowy
evidence of a man who is not a king, but a commander of an army, who lived during the late fifth to
early sixth century who may perhaps be the basis for Arthur. By looking at the context in which the
stories of King Arthur survived, and the evidence pertaining to his castle Camelot and the Battle of
Badon Hill, we can begin to see that Arthur is probably not a king as the legend holds.
While stories about the places ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has proved to be nearly impossible to find on of the grandest courts in all of England.
Arthurian history is vague to say the least, and written records are not always entirely factual. The
brief Annals of Wales tells two things of Arthur: he fought at Badon, and he was killed at Camlann
in the same battle. These Annals were composed centuries after the time of Arthur, and were
compiled from other, earlier sources. A battle between Arthur and Medraut (Modred) is recorded for
the year 539 AD. This entry was made after Arthur had already become a legend, and the spelling of
the name with an "h" would suggest this, as the evidence from the earliest reliable sources spells the
name without an "h". So it is reasonable to believe that this is a very late and unreliable entry
indeed.
Since very few individuals could write, stories of Arthur were mainly told by word of mouth. Oral
stories did not get written down until later; Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote down the stories as one of
the first written manuscript of Arthurian legend in 1139. Word of mouth was the way in which
Arthur's story is passed down through the years, and it is safe to assume that during that time, the
story transformed and evolved. Stories are embellished and added to, depending on the audience, in
order to make it more exciting. As discussed before in this paper, local tradition had placed Camelot

From the time Arthur Miller began writing plays, till his recent death in 2005, he had never had such

strain of his past mistakes lurking in the back of his mind, Willy cannot handle the stress and begins
to have hallucinations of the past about the things he could have changed.

No one made that decision of cheating other than Willy; he can't blame it on anyone but himself.
Making that decision impacted Willy for the rest of his life. Every time he left he was so vulnerable
for wrongful choices. Another big reason I believed that lead Willy to have destruction was that he
relied too much on his children. He expected something more than they could give him. Both of his
children knew they couldn't give their dad what he wanted, which ruined their relationship.
2.) As the play ended the state of Willy and his mindset began to change. He started to relies the type
of life he had lived and the type he wanted to live. Early in his life he imagined of becoming a
successful business man. "Don't say? Tell you a secret boy. Don't breathe it to a soul. Someday I'll

have with others in the business world and how they would all remember him from the success he
would have. But that idea was far from reality. No one remembered Willy in the business world he
was just another travelling worker, no big shot, someone who was soon to retire. As Willy thought
about this more all he could hope for was the success of the two good–looking boys he had raised, in
hope that they would be the next big thing. But

The Many Versions of The Legend of King Arthur
There are countless versions of the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. Most
English versions are based on Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, but where did these tales
originate, and what different interpretations are there today? This essay seeks to examine the roots
and different renditions of the various legends circulating today. The first section deals with the
origins of the legend. The second section speculates on who the "real" King Arthur could have been.
A comparison of several different versions, and suggestions of why they differ are given in the third
section, and the conclusion presents an analysis on the ambiguity of the legend.

He was also the first to use the name "Camelot" for Arthur's headquarters, and it was he who first
told us of the Grail, though he didn't associate any religious meaning to it (It was Robert de Boron
who is responsible for transforming the grail into a holy symbol, in 1210). He was "the first to

prose. The material begins to take on more historical and religious overtones, and here the idea that

century, Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte de Arthur is published. It is "the definitive English Athurian
romance" (Britannia web page), and "With one stroke of his pen, he transformed Arthur's Court
from Dark Age obscurity to the height of middle age pageantry" (David Nash Ford web page). It is
on this book that many of the modern versions are based, but by this time, it is mainly a work of
literature, and there is little history left amongst his pages. From these roots, many famous poets and
writers have been inspired. William Blake, Sir Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, Ralph Waldo

The Great Ancestry Of The Crown Of Camelot
The old scholar practically beamed as he unrolled the next scroll. "Let it be known, the great
ancestry of the crown of Camelot."
Geoffrey began to read off lineage that most nobles in Camelot knew by heart, until he came to the
one that Merlin both anticipated and feared. The warlock was trembling, as he awaited the signal
from the dais. His hand gripped the dragon bone hilt of Carnwenhau, drawing deep on the strength
within himself. He silently asked that his grandfather, who once wore the dagger, to be with him.
"...His Majesty, High King of Briton, Aurelius Ambrosius in the Great Marriage Rite with a druid
priestess begat a son, Balinor Emrys of the Dragon Lord line, Earl of Snowdonia..."
Merlin heard his mother 's gasp resound across the near silent room. He grinned, wondering what
she was going to think of the next part.
"This has been corroborated by His Royal Majesty, King Lot of Lothian and the High Druid Iseldir.
Lord Balinor, joined to Hunith of Ealdor, in turn begat one son."
Merlin took a deep breath and stepped partially out of the shadows, standing near the entrance to the
Great Hall. The 'Great Marriage Rite ' to validify Balinor 's heritage was a bit of a stretch. Although
recognized as a joining among the druidic population and others who still revered the Old Religion,
it was not something that would be upheld as a true Royal Line in the eyes of the Roman church, if
his legitimacy was ever challenged...but it was acceptable enough for the role of regent,

Comparing it to Superman it shows his love life does not compare to this at all. "Chretien's Lancelot
is a classic "courtly lover." His total devotion to Arthur's queen gives expression to the twelfth

Launcelot, falling in love with King Arthur's queen, wife, Gwynevere is known as a courtly lover
because he risks his life just to save her even though they are not married showing his true devotion
to the King and Queen.
According to Allen "King Arthur's favorite knight, Sir Launcelot, has fallen in love with the king's
wife, Gwynevere. The secret love affair is exposed by Sir Modred, Arthur's son by another woman,
and Gwynevere is sentenced to burn at the stake. While rescuing the imprisoned Gwynevere,
Launcelot slays two knights who, unknown to him at the time, are the brother of Sir Gawain, a
favorite nephew of Arthur's. After a reconciliation, Launcelot returns Gwynevere to Arthur to be
reinstated as queen." (Allen 248)
By this statement the reader can conclude they are resembling bravery in Sir Launcelot to risk his

The Twenty Thousand Dollar Death
There are numerous reasons that might have caused Willy Loman to end his life. In Arthur Miller's
play, Death of a Salesman, Loman is in conflict with his son, Biff Loman, his job as a salesman, and
himself. In the play Loman's job as a salesman no longer became beneficial to him and his family.
As time passed by, new ideas and younger salesmen began to take over the salesman industry, and
Loman was left behind. His wife, Linda, and he discuss all of the bills that have to be paid by the

The comedic affect was delivered by the illogicality of someone throwing animals to defend

West Side Story The Musical Essay
West Side Story The Musical
*No Works Cited
West Side Story is one of the most influential musicals of all time. It's integration of dance and song
into the plot was very innovative, because even though it had been done before, it had never been
done this well. Jerome Robbins had thought of an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to a Broadway
musical in 1949. He began discussions with librettist Arthur Laurents and composer Leonard
Bernstein of a musical called East Side Story, with a plot concentrating on a Catholic girl and a
Jewish boy. Other projects forced the work aside for six years, and when they returned to it, times
had changed. Their idea became West Side Story, (another early title was Gangway!) and the

The Latin–American rhythms gave Bernstein a good musical base to start from, and the whole score
benefited from a jazzy Manhattan feel, which had been inherited from Gershwin, as well as
Copland's romantic Americana feel. Robbins choice of a cast was very meticulously done. He
wanted a real feeling that had never been reached before in Musical history. He wanted actors that
were not well known, and that would get his theme of reality across to the audience. During
rehearsals he actually separated the Jets and the Sharks and didn't allow them to socialize or even
talk to one another. He also didn't allow the actress playing Anybodys to eat lunch with anyone at
all. The show opened on Broadway on September 16, 1957. At first, the critics were not able to fully
appreciate the magnitude of the achievement, but one critic, Brooks Atkinson wrote that the ballets
"convey the things that Laurents is inhibited from saying because the characters are so inarticulate."
This was done intentionally as a part of the realistic approach to the musical. By making the
teenagers inarticulate, they were forced to communicate at an emotional level that almost lended
itself to an impressionistic approach. One innovation of West Side Story was that there really wasn't
a dance chorus. Each dancer was assigned a specific character to play, and all of them sang, danced,
and spoke. Robbins knew that by

The Journey Of Two Young Inner City Boys : Arthur Agee And...
Karl Marx defines commodification as the transformation of people, goods, services, and ideas into
objects used for personal gain. According to Marx, these objects are not given intrinsic worth, rather
they are viewed as a means to an end in capitalism. The critically acclaimed documentary, Hoop
Dreams, follows the journey of two young inner–city boys: Arthur Agee and William Gates. It
depicts the pressures and challenges that come with growing up in the poor urban ghettos of
America. Ultimately, this film brings to light the commodification of athletes that occurs in major
high school athletics.
The documentary begins with well–respected talent scout, Earl Smith, scouring the streets of inner
city Chicago looking for athletes to bring to private schools in the suburbs. This is where he finds
Arthur and William. Earl brings these boys and their families to coach Pingatore where they are sold
their first lie of the film; that they are being brought in for a better educational experience. Talent
scouts like Earl Smith are sent to find talented athletes, not students. If the real commitment of these
private institutions, like St. Joes, was to better the lives of inner city kids academically, they would
find top students and give them scholarships rather than just look for the best athletes.
William and Arthur are defined by their success on the basketball court instead of by their moral
character. After Arthur does not make the varsity team, Coach Pingatore declares,

Martin Scorse's Taxi Driver
Martin Scorses's Taxi Driver is the distinct cry of mid–1970's America. American society was
becoming fabricated, alienated, and distrustful. Above all, American society was throwing away the
values of the older days and trying to replace its anger and discontent with violence and paranoia.
In the film the viewer is painfully close to its main character, Travis Bickle. This is written in a
narration form of a diary he writes in from time to time. Bickle is consistently portrayed as a lonely
but unrecognized veteran of the Vietnam War. After serving the war, Bickle tries to find some sort of
purpose in a new 1970's America. However, the protagonist finds himself often alienated from
society as well as disgusted by it. Bickle goes through several phases of crises, which all lead up to
violence. This is majorly due to his experiences as a war veteran and his inability to conduct himself
along with his emotions in a normal manner.
The Vietnam War was the first war to be televised and this was a shock to the American people. It
was able to show the most gritty and realistic side of war, which was very unlike the glorified
visions of victory and valor that films had portrayed. The veterans of war were promised a
homecoming and instead, they were unwelcomed and homeless. For the rest of the American public,
living was becoming uncontrollable and so was the government. Society's issues such as
abandonment and rotting cities were also touching Hollywood and its filmmakers. Old

The Liberal Election Victory of 1906 Essay
The Liberal Election Victory of 1906 The Liberals won a 'landslide' election victory in 1906. It is
claimed that the loss of power for the Conservatives was largely due to a decline in fortunes as the
party split due to issues over tariff reforms. On the other hand it is assumed that the loss was due to
the complacency and the neglect of Workingmen's Interests. Arthur James Balfour had become the
Conservative leader in the House of Commons and served (1891–92, 1895–1903) as the first Lord
of the treasury. He had succeeded his uncle as Prime minister in 1902. A huge task lay ahead of
Balfour, as poverty was to be a focal point at the beginning of the 20th century. Although it is
reputed that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The South African wars (1899–1902) resulted in a review made into the armed forced due to its poor
showing. Many men (of poor background) lost their lives, which in turn voiced concerns throughout
the country. This obviously reflected poorly on the government and produced a psychological shock
also as Chamberlain lost to the radical cause by his espousal of Imperialism, which proved to be a
double disaster for the Tories as it tied in with the Boer War. This allowed room for the Liberals to
capitalise on this advantage and to begin snatching the working class vote from the Conservatives
and people like Lloyd George enabled them to do so. He was a great orator and along with Churchill
they relentlessly tortured the Tory's throughout the campaign, attacking them as enemies of the
people. They carried this out effectively as they produced campaigns, slogans and songs, which
were widely accepted. The prevailing atmosphere of the Boer war made sure that Conservative
credibility was undermined when the 'Chinese slavery' affair was publicised. The public seemed to
be impressed by this issue. Political insensitivity of Balfour's government was indicated as

Essay on Arthur Mervyn
Charles Brockden Brown's novel, Arthur Mervyn, has been read by people across America from the
late eighteenth century up until today. Brown targeted many audiences in this novel but there is one
in particular that not only had an impact on people then, but can still captivate many in today's
society. That specific group involves people who are fighting an incurable illness, such as the
Yellow Fever, as described in the book. Although it was written in the late 1700's, people in the
twenty–first century can still relate to the characters in the book, and understand what they were
feeling at that time. The goal of this paper is to show that Brown's main intended audience was
towards the incurably sick and that even over two hundred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I felt as if I inhaled a poisonous and subtle fluid...some fatal influence seemed to seize upon my
vitals; and the work of corrosion and decomposition to be busily begun" (144). People often times
make assumptions about things when they don't really know what is going on. This is still the case
in today's time, when people assume the cause is one thing when it could be something completely
different. Mervyn seemed to know at this point that he was destined to die. Most of the fever victims
had no hopes of living once they contracted the illness. He later found sanctuary in the home of
Welbeck, in hopes of breathing his last there, stating, "All I sought was the privilege of dying alone"
(182).
The Yellow Fever is no different than many incurable diseases that we are fighting in today's society,
such as AIDS, Hepatitis A&B, Herpes, certain Cancers, Ebola and the Killer Flu. When a person
contacts some incurable disease, they must learn to live the rest of their lives with it, no matter how
long that may be. Victims of these diseases can read Arthur Mervyn and relate to the way that the
victims of the Yellow Fever felt; the only thing left to look forward to in life is death. Scientists
today still haven't found cures for so many of these diseases, just like the physicians in Arthur

Hoop Dreams Film Analysis
Whilst watching 'Hoop Dreams', the respect that is held for William Gates and Arthur Agee by the
filmmakers Steve James, Peter Gilbert and Frederick Marx within the observational documentary
(Bill Nichols, 2001) is obvious, and their decorum after the film's release remains an integral part of
the film's legacy. As a whole, documentaries often do not perform as well as their narrative film
counterparts, and so when 'Hoop Dreams' soared beyond expectations to make $11.8million at the
box office worldwide (according to BoxOfficeMojo.com), the filmmakers famously gave Gates and
Agee around $200,000 a piece in royalties. Paying for a social actor's involvement in the film is the
subject of debate worldwide, as many professionals in the industry ... Show more content on

As Sheila presents herself on screen as being a strong and proud woman, the filmmakers ethically
document her asking direct to camera "Do you ever ask yourself how I get by on $268 a month and
keep this house and feed these children? Do you ever ask yourself that question?" The largely white,
upper or middle class intended audience for this film would be shocked by such questions appearing
in their own lives. "Too many of them embraced Ronald Reagan's cartoon of "Welfare Queens" and
now endorse Newt Gingrich's even more vicious slanders on welfare mothers." (Sperber, 1996) The
filmmakers themselves then give Sheila the money to pay for her utility bills in this moment of
despair. This act of generosity and kindness is exemplified in it's ethical nature, as the moment itself
is never shown on camera, but came out after the film's release. It is clear from this that it was not
done to further the image of the filmmakers, but rather to show support for a family who had been
so accommodating for the years spent making this film. "That was the kind of situation where we try
to be human beings in the process," notes Steve James. (Leeman, 2003) "But at the same time,
capture the realities of their lives in as honest a way as we could without compromising our essential
humanness. We need to be more than just filmmakers. And it's a tough line to

King Arthur Essay
King Arthur
Character Analysis
The character of King Arthur is unique in literature. Most characters are known through their actions
and words as described by the author of a story. Arthur, however, is a conglomerate of characters
described by many different authors over a fifteen hundred year span. There is no single depiction of
him, and one cannot trace his origin to a single author for the "definitive" description. As such, the
character of Arthur is different depending on the era, culture, and the particular writer who is
relating his version of the Arthurian legend.
Three Kinds of Arthur
There is much debate whether Arthur was an actual historical person. There is no absolute evidence,
but it is possible that Arthur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here we see Arthur as a kind of Beowulf: a fearless leader of men, capable of legendary feats of
strength and battle. This Arthur is practically a god; in fact, there is reason to believe that the figures
of the Arthurian romances were originally Welsh gods (Americana).
Arthur as symbol of the virtues of Camelot
A second image of Arthur is that of a "peripheral figure whose presence is felt mainly as a social
force or arbiter of chivalric excellence (Americana)." Epitomized by the story Sir Gawain & the
Green Knight, Arthur is not the main character or source of action. He is the symbol of a wide
abstraction: that of the courage, honor, honesty, and chivalry of Camelot and the Knights of the
Round Table. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, we still see Arthur as fearless warrior; he is the
first to accept the Green Knight's challenge and lay his life on the line to defend the honor of his
court. But, in addition to his positive virtues, Arthur is also representative of the affluence and
decadence of his court. There is perhaps a sense that Arthur and his court are too successful and
have become enamored of fine food, drink, and women. It is this hubris, with Arthur as its highest
symbol, that the Green Knight challenges. In this story, we also see the first indications that Arthur,
through questionable descision–making, is capable of causing strife among the Knights of

Essay About Arthurian Legends Effects On English Society

  • 1. Essay about Arthurian Legends Effects on English Society What role did the great King Arthur play in the way English Literature is perceived? Did King Arthur honestly exist? "Whether King Arthur existed or not is doubtful. However if King Arthur did exist, then he would have lived sometime between 400 AD and 600 AD, a time of turmoil in Britain following the Roman withdrawl. And a time when written literature did not exist, therefore events during this period are only known about from folklore passed down several generations before being written down, or from modern archeology giving insights from excavations of sites. If there was ever a true King Arthur in history, he would probably be Romano–British warleader, probably named Artorius, which is a Roman name for Arthur. Though the Roman ... The Arthurian Legends were an effect of the Romantic Era and resulted in abstract thinking, as well as the arts including music, painting, poetry, and writing. The birth of the Arthurian Legends came from Celtic mythology and medieval romance, while the existence of magic confirms the conception of artistic intellect. Whether or not King Arthur truly existed, his influence dramatically changed the English society and English Literature to its current form (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The Arthurian Legend is seen to be extremely influential in benefitting the English people during the Romantic Era. Even if King Arthur is a fictional character of myth and legend in England, his childhood, countless glories and achievements as the king of Camelot, and the final down fall of his strong empire validated his importance to English literature. Proof of King Arthur's existence would possibly solidify the impact he had on the English culture (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The early childhood of King Arthur seems to be the foundation of the epic journey of his life. Even though his achievements as a child were brief, they were extremely important to King Arthur's outlook on life, as well as character. As an optimistic squire, King Arthur had hopes of one day overcoming his social standing. He received his wish when he unknowingly pulled the magical sword out of the stone. ... • 2. King Arthur Essay Tales Of King Arthur Since the romanticizing of the Arthurian legends by Geoffery of Monmouth, the historian, during the twelfth century, the legendary 'king of England' has been the source of inspiration for kings, poets, artists and dreamers alike. The most famous work is probably Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, completed around 1470, and published in many abridged and complete versions. Malory's work contains in one the legend that had been continually added to over the years by many different writers who introduced such elements as Sir Galahad, and the ill–fated love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere. Other stories place it near Arthur's supposed birthplace at Tintagel. Cadbury Castle in Somerset has been named as another possible location of Camelot, which has been revealed during excavations to have been occupied during the time of Arthur and to have been the headquarters of a leader, if not a king. The real Arthur may have been buried at Glastonbury Abbey, which lays around twelve miles north–west of the castle. It is said to have been a secret burial, so the news of his death would not raise Saxon morale; the mystery may have given rise to the rumors that he still lived on. • 4. James Agee and Walker Evans Essay James Agee and Walker Evans Fortune Magazine, in July and August of 1936, sent James Agee and Walker Evans to research a story on sharecropping. In the preface of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Agee describes it as "a curious piece of work." They were to produce "an article on cotton tenantry in the United States, in the form of a photographic and verbal record of the daily living and environment of an average white family of tenant farmers," (IX). James Agee and Walker Evans set out to write and photograph an article for a magazine, and ended up experimenting with the form of the novel itself. James Agee was born in 1909 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was in the urban middle class, so he had no experience with cotton farming. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Agee and Evans set out to publish an article in Fortune Magazine, but when they brought back their work to the editors, they were rebuked. The "article" was over 400 pages of controversial writing and even various book editors refused to publish it as a novel. Finally in 1941 it was published by Mifflin in Massachusetts after the author was forced to take out a few outlawed words in the state. They failed in their original mission to produce an "article," but undoubtedly presented a "photographic and verbal record" of the average white southern tenant farmer families. By living with three different families for four weeks, Evans depicted their innermost sorrows through his photographs, and Agee portrayed and emboldened their spirit by his written words. The novel itself was an experiment in form, with Evans' photos all placed in the front without captions, rather than dispersed throughout the novel. Even in the text, Agee continually stops himself mid–description and enters into a stream–of–consciousness describing the difficulties of articulating accurately the tenant families true expressions. For these reasons, it was considered a failure when it was published, but also for the same reasons it was considered an amazing success twenty years later in the 1960s. In the Preface, Agee conveys that this "is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the ... The story is about three white families of tenant farmers in rural Alabama. The photographs in the beginning have no captions or quotations. They are just images of three tenant farming families, their houses, and possessions. "The photographs are not illustrative. They, and the text, are coequal, mutually independent, and fully collaborative." The lamp's oil, interpreted to be their lives, hopes, and dreams. This oil is either half full or half empty; surely I believe it is half full. In the reading, the lamp's oil signifies life, hope, security and safety. James Agee places these things at the center of the family's existence. This shows that the author of "The Country Letter" places high respect towards these aspects in life. Their goals were to live life to the fullest, no one else, but themselves could make them happy. Of such ultimate, such holiness of silence and peace that all on earth and within extremest remembrance seems suspended upon it in perfection as upon reflected water: and I feel that if I can by utter quietness succeed in not disturbing this silence, in not so much as touching this plain of water, I can tell you anything within the realm of God. • 6. The Crucible and The Salem Witch Trials by Arthur Miller... Arthur Miller wrote plays as a way of showing people the real picture of what life was really like during the Great Depression and after World War II. Before the Great Depression many Americans were living in a significant time period, the Roaring Twenties. People had radios, automobiles, and movies with sounds. Then it all suddenly came to an end with the Stock Market Crash, leading to the Great Depression. During the Great Depression, Americans faced poverty, and had no income because jobs weren't available. Throughout his life Miller influenced many people with his plays, and his contributions to this day because people want to read and understand what was truly happening in past history. While Miller was married to his first wife, he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, who later would become his wife. Marilyn Monroe was a great influence in his life inspiring him to write "After the Fall" (1964), which was an open portrayal of his marriage with Monroe. Arthur's purpose for writing literature was to unmask the problems and issues of capitalism so the people could have a fair understanding of the truth but in his plays rather than newspapers and magazines. In the nineteen fifty's, Miller was starting to go downhill. During this time, one of Millers most popular and recognized works; The Crucible was playing on Broadway. The Crucible showed a relationship with the Communist Red Scare that America was facing during this. The Communist Red Scare took place shortly after the end of World War I. It was a nationwide fear of communist, socialists, and other fears America was facing. Since the Red Scare was such a big deal to many Americans during this time in American history, Millers face drastically declined. • 7. Essay on Suffering in Photographs Suffering in Photographs Photographs are used to document history, however selected images are chosen to do so. Often times these images graphically show the cruelty of mankind. In her book, Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag asks, "What does it mean to protest suffering, as distinct from acknowledging it?" To acknowledge suffering is just to capture it, to point it out and show somebody else that it exists. In order to protest suffering, there has to be some sort of moral decision that what is shown in the photograph is wrong, and a want from the viewer to change that. Sontag says that throughout history, things focused on in art and history tend to be the "product of wrath, divine or human." There is much art showing the ... In war, photography and art again serve the purpose of acknowledging and sometimes protesting suffering. In the First World War cameras were used for military intelligence, to capture an event. "The caption of a photograph is traditionally neutral informative: a date, a place, names." A photograph is supposed to just record what happened and not takes sides. However, "it is always the image that someone chose; to photograph is to frame, and to frame is to exclude." So the photograph is supposed to be neutral, but the photographer is still deciding what details to focus on. The caption has just facts on it, because supposedly that is what the photograph is recording. While it is true that photographs cannot explain everything themselves, they do serve as visual aids to, what otherwise be, a pallid world. Goya was an artist who made etchings called The Disasters Of War. These etchings showed the horrible things that were done by Napoleon's soldiers. They were made in order to shock the viewer and make them feel the pain of what happened. These sketches did not go in narrative order or show exact details of an event, they were just images showing that bad things like that happen during war. As a result of Arthur Anderson engaging in unethical practices, Enron's shareholders lost their money when the company went into bankruptcy, Arthur Andersen employees lost their jobs, and the company went out of business (Accounting ethics, 2011, para. 12). This essay will explore how each character of the play contributes to Willy's dream, success, and failure. Willy is the aging salesman whose imagination is much larger than his sales ability. Willy's wife, Linda, stands by her husband even in his absence of realism. Biff and Happy follow in their father's fallacy of life. She encourages Willy's dream, yet she will not let him leave her for the New Continent, the only realm where the dream can be fulfilled. She want to reconcile father and son, but she attempts this in the context of Willy's false values. She cannot allow her sons to achieve that selfhood that involves denial of these values" (Gordon p. 316). Linda is also caught up in Willy's lies and therefore does nothing but help fuel the fire in the inferno of their dreams and ambitions. She lets this whole masquerade continue right in front of her instead of doing something to stop their out of control lies. Also, Biff the oldest son, continues to search for his purpose in life. Due mainly to all the "hot air" Willy always feeds him, Biff continues to stumble in his fight for life. Biff has never had the ability to hold down a job very long due to his inability to take orders and do his time in the trenches before becoming a success at a particular job. Richard J. Chris and Anne did not have their own family yet, which was an excuse for the older generation to contradict them although they knew the difference between right and wrong. It was a fierce battle between Germans and Canadians. Canada was trying to take over the German controlled ridge, which ran from northwest to southwest between Lens and Arras, France. Its highest point was 145 feet above sea level, which was exceptionally helpful in battle because of the very flat landscape. Already over 200,000 men had fallen at Vimy, all desperately trying to take or defend this important and strategic ridge. German veterans have told stories about the war, revealing that some Germans feared Canadian soldiers more than soldiers of any other country. At the start of the war, Canadians were not really viewed as independent Canadian soldiers, but rather, soldiers of the British military force. As a result of their achievements at Vimy Ridge, Canada was granted their own seat at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles after the war. Clearly, the battle of Vimy Ridge created Canada as a nation in the eyes of other countries. The feats achieved by Canadians were incredible, and more influential than anything they had done before. Vimy was one of the German's most heavily guarded areas, and it was thought that it was impossible to over take. However, when the Canadians did take it, they captured the most artillery and guns since the start of the war. They also managed to take 4,000 Germans as prisoners of war. Past battles at Vimy witnessed over 200,000 causalities. During the Canadian attack on the ridge, they lost 3,598 soldiers while the Germans suffered over 20,000 causalities. Canadians had much to be proud of after Vimy, a feeling they did not often get while fighting under British command. Critics question whether Vimy aided Canada's birth as a nation. Going in depth to a character allows the reader to better understand that character's internal and external conflicts. Arthur Miller uses this technique in several of his plays, including Death of a Salesman. Miller portrays the character of Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman through his internal and external conflicts. The internal conflict begins with Willy's expectations for his sons and The Woman. Willy dreams of the American dream and family dreams. Willy characterizes the American dream as success, which creates conflict within himself. Willy longs for the dream so much that he focuses solely on achieving this goal that he loses desire for anything less. Willy interprets his desire for success when he defines Dave Singleton: And he was eighty–four years old and he'd drummed merchandise in thirty–one states. And old Dave he'd go up to his room, y'understand, put on his green velvet slippers – I'll never forget – and pick up his phone and call the buyers, and without ever leaving his room at the age of eighty–four, he made his living. And when I saw that, I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could want. (Miller 81) Dave Singleton is a model for Willy because he shows that a salesman can be remembered, loved, and helped in many different places in the country (Eisinger 4). However, after the Normans came to Britain, there was an intensification of the Arthurian legend, possibly due to the fact that the Normans saw Arthur as a hero against the Saxons and therefore glorified him in their text. Arthur is considered a hero in almost every text that mentions him. In spite of this, though, more was written about adventures of his knights than of him personally (Chambers 155). It is said that Arthur existed not only to kill Saxons but also to be a Christian champion who killed pagans as well. Previous to anything the romantic French poets wrote about him, Arthur was glorified in writing for conducting aggressive wars, during which he conquered "fantastical" places. If he had, in fact, conquered real places, there would have been more written on these conquests since by the time he was active it would have been more controversial for him to attack and conquer foreign countries. However, there are three major battles that Arthur is connected to. One of the most controversial is the war that Arthur fought with the Roman empire. It is suggested by Geoffrey of Monmouth that Arthur's motivation to fight the Roman emperor did not come from the fact only that the emperor was seen as a pagan and sinner against God, but also because there was a rivalry between Arthur's "new" nation as opposed to Rome's old, worn–out nation. As it was slow and evenly played, it had a melancholy feel to it. The underlying base clef kept a steady deep tone that despite when the treble notes picked up a bit, it kept it from becoming cheerful in the slightest. The third piece, presto, was very fast paced. This is where Management becomes the richest asset in Harley's empire (Harley–Davidson.com). Vaughn Beals and his associates could see why H–D was failing under the AMF's management. The AMF disregarded the expertise of true motorcycle riders, even within the company. Currently H–D was cranking out far too many motorcycles with way too many complications. For longtime riders and motorcycle advocates this was not a problem, because they would simply purchase a new bike, strip it down and properly reassemble it to there liking. The only reason H–d stayed alive was because of the thousands of loyal H–D supporters who would, and could do this. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whether it is incorporated in the content or the actual structure, this struggle between recognizing reality from illusion turns into a strong theme; it eventually leads to the downfall of Willy and his family. Willy is incapable of recognizing who he is, and cannot realize that he, as well as his sons, is not capable of being successful in the business world. Happy and Biff both go through some battle between reality and illusion that cause a collapse in some part of their lives. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The theme, confusion between reality and illusion leads to a downfall, applies here because in a way suicide is the ultimate downfall. Charley, a voice of reason, counter argues that "nobody's worth nothin' dead" (98). Charley is consistently in reality and is one of the most successful people in the play. So, the fact that Charley recognizes reality in the harshest and brightest light is what kept him from experiencing a downfall in his life. If the Willy was not confused about the reality of his life, there may not have been such a great fall when his life amounted to less than he expected, and when Biff's life did not turn out to be what he had hoped. Apart from Willy's delusion of his own success, he also sees his sons as great successes in the business world, and that they will amount to so much in their lives. These boys cannot be successful because they have been "[blown] so full of hot air [they] could never stand taking orders from anybody" (131). Willy's illusions about his sons not only ruined Willy's life, but it caused these boys to have a false sense of reality, which is the theme. This false sense of reality leads to their downfall in the business world because Willy had built them up so high that they believed they should be the one giving the orders, not taking them. When Willy tells his boys "together [you] could absolutely lick the civilized world" (64), this is an example of the way Willy falsely sees his boys and fills their ... Essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an unknown author in the 14th century, can be called a timeless work of poetry. It exudes a certain fantastic quality that, despite its age of over 500 years, still appeals to modern audiences. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable to state that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? Because of the similarities in plot and style with so much modern fantasy, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight could be placed in the same category with that genre, though the uses of doing so are questionable. From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and say essentially, "I'll see you in a year," (ll. 423–456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in the narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446–2462) finishes the plot as it began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White, Blood Red and its several follow–ups. To increase the fairy–tale style feel of the story, the Green Knight is called an elf (ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily be called a fairy tale. Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well. The delightful accounts of the changing of the seasons are in part to indicate the passage of time, but also add mood to the whole of the piece. Present–day fantasy writer Patricia McKillip has been critically lauded for "lush imagery" and stories described as "atmospheric... and filled with rich imagery." • 21. Mist of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley Mist of Avalon breaks through many stereotypes but also strengthens some in some ways. One stereotype that was torn down was that women are not as strong as men. This is proved to be wrong when they have Morgaine fighting men and actually being victorious. This movie also breaks the stereotype that women can't be in power. Most women in this movie hold very high positions. For example, Viviane is the high goddess of Avalon. Also Morgaine is her second in command. Although this movie breaks some stereotypes it also reinforces them by putting the blame on a women for not being able to give the king an heir. Although in this case it really is her fault nobody knows this information and automatically blames her. These are just a few of the reasons that Mist of Avalon strengthens and breaks through common stereotypes. In Mist of Avalon Gwenhwyfar is a sympathetic character because she has so much going against her. Although she does have her own wrong doings they are acted on out of hurt. For example, she is cursed with not being able to give the king an heir and this causes turmoil in their marriage. Also in the end she gets even more bad things thrown her way and then repents for her sins and ends things with Lancelot. The film doesn't treat physical beauty in a positive or negative way. It is very neutral about outer beauty compared to inner. This can be proved because Morgos was pretty but she was an evil person and both Viviane and Morgaine weren't the most ... Americans reacted very negatively to this influx, and their negative sentiments were made apparent in the California Supreme Court's People v. Then, in 1882, President Chester Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act, a law that prohibited Chinese laborers from entering the United States (Foner, 651). [This is too short to be a paragraph on its own.] Violence almost defines Bonnie and Clyde. It runs like a silver thread through the entire film. Graphic violence is today a rather common and somewhat natural characteristic of modern cinema, but before Bonnie and Clyde, it certainly was not. Arthur Penn introduced it in 1967. Before Bonnie and Clyde violence in film was hinted at or just implied through various sorts of acting techniques. Arthur Penn decided to show the audience the real, brutal and raw side to violence, using brilliant camerawork but more importantly, top–notch special effects and masterful visual skills. In Bonnie and Clyde the violence never feels fake, but terrifyingly real. Most people would tell of a great King; a devoted circle of heroic knights; mighty castles and mightier deeds; a time of chivalry and courtly love; of Lancelot and Guinevere; of triumph and death. Historians and archaeologists, especially Leslie Alcock, point to shadowy evidence of a man who is not a king, but a commander of an army, who lived during the late fifth to early sixth century who may perhaps be the basis for Arthur. By looking at the context in which the stories of King Arthur survived, and the evidence pertaining to his castle Camelot and the Battle of Badon Hill, we can begin to see that Arthur is probably not a king as the legend holds. Arthurian history is vague to say the least, and written records are not always entirely factual. The brief Annals of Wales tells two things of Arthur: he fought at Badon, and he was killed at Camlann in the same battle. These Annals were composed centuries after the time of Arthur, and were compiled from other, earlier sources. A battle between Arthur and Medraut (Modred) is recorded for the year 539 AD. This entry was made after Arthur had already become a legend, and the spelling of the name with an "h" would suggest this, as the evidence from the earliest reliable sources spells the name without an "h". So it is reasonable to believe that this is a very late and unreliable entry indeed. Since very few individuals could write, stories of Arthur were mainly told by word of mouth. Oral stories did not get written down until later; Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote down the stories as one of the first written manuscript of Arthurian legend in 1139. Word of mouth was the way in which Arthur's story is passed down through the years, and it is safe to assume that during that time, the story transformed and evolved. Stories are embellished and added to, depending on the audience, in order to make it more exciting. • 34. West Side Story The Musical Essay West Side Story The Musical *No Works Cited West Side Story is one of the most influential musicals of all time. It's integration of dance and song into the plot was very innovative, because even though it had been done before, it had never been done this well. Jerome Robbins had thought of an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to a Broadway musical in 1949. He began discussions with librettist Arthur Laurents and composer Leonard Bernstein of a musical called East Side Story, with a plot concentrating on a Catholic girl and a Jewish boy. Other projects forced the work aside for six years, and when they returned to it, times had changed. Their idea became West Side Story, (another early title was Gangway!) and the Montague–Capulet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Latin–American rhythms gave Bernstein a good musical base to start from, and the whole score benefited from a jazzy Manhattan feel, which had been inherited from Gershwin, as well as Copland's romantic Americana feel. Robbins choice of a cast was very meticulously done. He wanted a real feeling that had never been reached before in Musical history. He wanted actors that were not well known, and that would get his theme of reality across to the audience. During rehearsals he actually separated the Jets and the Sharks and didn't allow them to socialize or even talk to one another. He also didn't allow the actress playing Anybodys to eat lunch with anyone at all. The show opened on Broadway on September 16, 1957. At first, the critics were not able to fully appreciate the magnitude of the achievement, but one critic, Brooks Atkinson wrote that the ballets "convey the things that Laurents is inhibited from saying because the characters are so inarticulate." This was done intentionally as a part of the realistic approach to the musical. By making the teenagers inarticulate, they were forced to communicate at an emotional level that almost lended itself to an impressionistic approach. One innovation of West Side Story was that there really wasn't a dance chorus. Each dancer was assigned a specific character to play, and all of them sang, danced, and spoke. Robbins knew that by ... • 35. The Journey Of Two Young Inner City Boys : Arthur Agee And... Karl Marx defines commodification as the transformation of people, goods, services, and ideas into objects used for personal gain. According to Marx, these objects are not given intrinsic worth, rather they are viewed as a means to an end in capitalism. The critically acclaimed documentary, Hoop Dreams, follows the journey of two young inner–city boys: Arthur Agee and William Gates. It depicts the pressures and challenges that come with growing up in the poor urban ghettos of America. Ultimately, this film brings to light the commodification of athletes that occurs in major high school athletics. The documentary begins with well–respected talent scout, Earl Smith, scouring the streets of inner city Chicago looking for athletes to bring to private schools in the suburbs. This is where he finds Arthur and William. Earl brings these boys and their families to coach Pingatore where they are sold their first lie of the film; that they are being brought in for a better educational experience. Talent scouts like Earl Smith are sent to find talented athletes, not students. If the real commitment of these private institutions, like St. Joes, was to better the lives of inner city kids academically, they would find top students and give them scholarships rather than just look for the best athletes. William and Arthur are defined by their success on the basketball court instead of by their moral character. After Arthur does not make the varsity team, Coach Pingatore declares, ... • 36. Martin Scorse's Taxi Driver Martin Scorses's Taxi Driver is the distinct cry of mid–1970's America. American society was becoming fabricated, alienated, and distrustful. Above all, American society was throwing away the values of the older days and trying to replace its anger and discontent with violence and paranoia. In the film the viewer is painfully close to its main character, Travis Bickle. This is written in a narration form of a diary he writes in from time to time. Bickle is consistently portrayed as a lonely but unrecognized veteran of the Vietnam War. After serving the war, Bickle tries to find some sort of purpose in a new 1970's America. However, the protagonist finds himself often alienated from society as well as disgusted by it. Bickle goes through several phases of crises, which all lead up to violence. This is majorly due to his experiences as a war veteran and his inability to conduct himself along with his emotions in a normal manner. The Vietnam War was the first war to be televised and this was a shock to the American people. It was able to show the most gritty and realistic side of war, which was very unlike the glorified visions of victory and valor that films had portrayed. The veterans of war were promised a homecoming and instead, they were unwelcomed and homeless. For the rest of the American public, living was becoming uncontrollable and so was the government. Society's issues such as abandonment and rotting cities were also touching Hollywood and its filmmakers. Old ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Liberal Election Victory of 1906 Essay The Liberal Election Victory of 1906 The Liberals won a 'landslide' election victory in 1906. It is claimed that the loss of power for the Conservatives was largely due to a decline in fortunes as the party split due to issues over tariff reforms. On the other hand it is assumed that the loss was due to the complacency and the neglect of Workingmen's Interests. Arthur James Balfour had become the Conservative leader in the House of Commons and served (1891–92, 1895–1903) as the first Lord of the treasury. He had succeeded his uncle as Prime minister in 1902. A huge task lay ahead of Balfour, as poverty was to be a focal point at the beginning of the 20th century. Although it is reputed that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The South African wars (1899–1902) resulted in a review made into the armed forced due to its poor showing. Many men (of poor background) lost their lives, which in turn voiced concerns throughout the country. This obviously reflected poorly on the government and produced a psychological shock also as Chamberlain lost to the radical cause by his espousal of Imperialism, which proved to be a double disaster for the Tories as it tied in with the Boer War. This allowed room for the Liberals to capitalise on this advantage and to begin snatching the working class vote from the Conservatives and people like Lloyd George enabled them to do so. He was a great orator and along with Churchill they relentlessly tortured the Tory's throughout the campaign, attacking them as enemies of the people. They carried this out effectively as they produced campaigns, slogans and songs, which were widely accepted. The prevailing atmosphere of the Boer war made sure that Conservative credibility was undermined when the 'Chinese slavery' affair was publicised. The public seemed to be impressed by this issue. Political insensitivity of Balfour's government was indicated as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Essay on Arthur Mervyn Charles Brockden Brown's novel, Arthur Mervyn, has been read by people across America from the late eighteenth century up until today. Brown targeted many audiences in this novel but there is one in particular that not only had an impact on people then, but can still captivate many in today's society. That specific group involves people who are fighting an incurable illness, such as the Yellow Fever, as described in the book. Although it was written in the late 1700's, people in the twenty–first century can still relate to the characters in the book, and understand what they were feeling at that time. The goal of this paper is to show that Brown's main intended audience was towards the incurably sick and that even over two hundred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I felt as if I inhaled a poisonous and subtle fluid...some fatal influence seemed to seize upon my vitals; and the work of corrosion and decomposition to be busily begun" (144). People often times make assumptions about things when they don't really know what is going on. This is still the case in today's time, when people assume the cause is one thing when it could be something completely different. Mervyn seemed to know at this point that he was destined to die. Most of the fever victims had no hopes of living once they contracted the illness. He later found sanctuary in the home of Welbeck, in hopes of breathing his last there, stating, "All I sought was the privilege of dying alone" (182). The Yellow Fever is no different than many incurable diseases that we are fighting in today's society, such as AIDS, Hepatitis A&B, Herpes, certain Cancers, Ebola and the Killer Flu. When a person contacts some incurable disease, they must learn to live the rest of their lives with it, no matter how long that may be. Victims of these diseases can read Arthur Mervyn and relate to the way that the victims of the Yellow Fever felt; the only thing left to look forward to in life is death. Scientists today still haven't found cures for so many of these diseases, just like the physicians in Arthur ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Hoop Dreams Film Analysis Whilst watching 'Hoop Dreams', the respect that is held for William Gates and Arthur Agee by the filmmakers Steve James, Peter Gilbert and Frederick Marx within the observational documentary (Bill Nichols, 2001) is obvious, and their decorum after the film's release remains an integral part of the film's legacy. As a whole, documentaries often do not perform as well as their narrative film counterparts, and so when 'Hoop Dreams' soared beyond expectations to make $11.8million at the box office worldwide (according to BoxOfficeMojo.com), the filmmakers famously gave Gates and Agee around $200,000 a piece in royalties. Paying for a social actor's involvement in the film is the subject of debate worldwide, as many professionals in the industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Sheila presents herself on screen as being a strong and proud woman, the filmmakers ethically document her asking direct to camera "Do you ever ask yourself how I get by on $268 a month and keep this house and feed these children? Do you ever ask yourself that question?" The largely white, upper or middle class intended audience for this film would be shocked by such questions appearing in their own lives. "Too many of them embraced Ronald Reagan's cartoon of "Welfare Queens" and now endorse Newt Gingrich's even more vicious slanders on welfare mothers." (Sperber, 1996) The filmmakers themselves then give Sheila the money to pay for her utility bills in this moment of despair. This act of generosity and kindness is exemplified in it's ethical nature, as the moment itself is never shown on camera, but came out after the film's release. It is clear from this that it was not done to further the image of the filmmakers, but rather to show support for a family who had been so accommodating for the years spent making this film. "That was the kind of situation where we try to be human beings in the process," notes Steve James. (Leeman, 2003) "But at the same time, capture the realities of their lives in as honest a way as we could without compromising our essential humanness. We need to be more than just filmmakers. • 40. King Arthur Essay King Arthur Character Analysis The character of King Arthur is unique in literature. Most characters are known through their actions and words as described by the author of a story. Arthur, however, is a conglomerate of characters described by many different authors over a fifteen hundred year span. There is no single depiction of him, and one cannot trace his origin to a single author for the "definitive" description. As such, the character of Arthur is different depending on the era, culture, and the particular writer who is relating his version of the Arthurian legend. Three Kinds of Arthur There is much debate whether Arthur was an actual historical person. There is no absolute evidence, but it is possible that Arthur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here we see Arthur as a kind of Beowulf: a fearless leader of men, capable of legendary feats of strength and battle. This Arthur is practically a god; in fact, there is reason to believe that the figures of the Arthurian romances were originally Welsh gods (Americana). Arthur as symbol of the virtues of Camelot A second image of Arthur is that of a "peripheral figure whose presence is felt mainly as a social force or arbiter of chivalric excellence (Americana)." Epitomized by the story Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, Arthur is not the main character or source of action. He is the symbol of a wide abstraction: that of the courage, honor, honesty, and chivalry of Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, we still see Arthur as fearless warrior; he is the first to accept the Green Knight's challenge and lay his life on the line to defend the honor of his court. But, in addition to his positive virtues, Arthur is also representative of the affluence and decadence of his court. There is perhaps a sense that Arthur and his court are too successful and have become enamored of fine food, drink, and women. It is this hubris, with Arthur as its highest symbol, that the Green Knight challenges. In this story, we also see the first indications that Arthur, through questionable descision–making, is capable of causing strife among the Knights of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
