This document analyzes the mise-en-scene of magazine posters and a digipak cover promoting an artist named Ella. For the magazine posters, Ella's image takes up half the space and is in focus to draw attention, while the background is darker and unfocused. Ella maintains her vintage style through woolly jumpers. Cream colors are used to enhance the vintage feel. On the digipak cover, Ella's large centered image dominates to make her the primary focus. Her brightly lit face connects with audiences while retaining vintage elements through makeup and plain clothing. Cream colors again support the retro personality.
2. Magazine Poster…
Looking at the Mise en scene within this magazine poster we can see that when focusing on the size of
the image used of the artist, that it is at least half of the poster (top half). This could be enabling us to
notice that she is important within this, she is at the top showing the dominance and powerful effect
she has over the poster, giving us that stability within her success and how we are the able to notice her
as the artist and she is what the album is about.
Secondly, the focus of the image within this poster is that she seems clear to us, as it is like she is
leaning on top of all the information, giving is that high focus in which we would be needing for it to
create that important effect for what the design is reaching out to do. We can see that within the image
the background imagery is more unfocused against Ella herself, this could be showing us that they are
wanting us to know that Ella is the important part within this poster and nothing else within the artist is
as important.
However, when looking at the lighting with this magazine cover we can see that the artist herself is in a
foreseeing light, whereas when looking at the background it seem dark, showing that this is within the
dark, meaning that this is more out of sight, still seeing few areas, but that main use of lighting that
would therefore attract the audience would be see the important part within this design, allowing us as
the audience to be able to see this. However the lighting does seem to be in contrast with each other
with the idea of light against dark. As we can see that the information is with a very dark, black colour
and then the image on top is light, meaning that they are contrasting with each other, showing the
colour has that more appealing affect to it compared with looking at the dark colour in contrast.
As we can see when looking at the star image within this poster we can see that Ella as gone to her
normal appearance of having this vintage style look. As we can see that she has gone for this woolly
type of styled jumper, giving it that vintage type of relaxed look, meaning that Ella is still keeping to her
stereotypical looks and inferences that she is showing within this, creating more that effect and still
allowing us as the audience to see more into her personality.
Finally, when looking at the colour used within this we can see that they have gone for this this light
creamy design, as we can see that with the image they have used this cream effect to complement the
idea of this vintage style, she wants to be seen with this personality and if this was to mean that it
includes within her promotion posters then they would include this, however she hasn’t gone for bright
colours, such as white and black it still gives out that vintage appearance in which she is wanting to
appeal as.
3. Digipak Cover…
Looking at the Mise en scene within this digipak cover, we can see that the size in which they have used is large
for the image, basically when looking at this we can see that she covers up the entire cover of the digipak.
Giving out the effect to the audience that she is the more important part of this design, she stands out to us
more and using this size allows us to see more of her as the audience, we get to see her personality such as
emotive feelings, as well as allowing us as the audience to understand more about her from looking at this
simple sized design.
The focus in which we are getting from this digipak cover is that we see the artist very clearly through, this we
are understanding more about her, it is focused in partially on the face, we don’t see her body and we are not
seeing anything else, only her face, this could be because she is wanting the audience to know her, she is
wanting to appeal more towards us and most of all it is allowing her to connect with her audience not just by
audience connecting with her, it then creates that bond and showing that she is the significant design of this.
When looking at the lighting with this design, we can see that it is very clear and bright within the way it is
being shown. It is creating that effect of possibly knowing that she has this light personality, she is wanting to
be seen like this as this bright character. This is because it allows to interact more with audience, let us know
who she and the bright lighting helps her to stand out to her audience. This is also still linking in with the idea
about wanting this vintage effect and the lighting shows that idea of her still wanting this olden day
appearance, however still showing that she is young because of the way we clearly see her as the artist. It is
this idea of contrasting colours, such as old and young, but in this case vintage and modern.
Furthermore, when looking at the colour used within this we can that yet again they have used this cream type
of colour use. This could be giving out this idea again about her vintage appearance and the way in which she is
wanting to be seen through this, allowing us to see about her and the way in which she is like and allowing us
to see the close up of her face and the colours in which she has used gives us this idea of an olden era type of
design, creating the effect in which is needed.
Lastly, looking at the idea of star image, we can see that we don’t see much of her as we are only seeing her
face but looking at the detailing within her face we can see that she is going for this well know black eyeliner,
which this is a well known within appearance in the music industry, however from this we are still getting that
star image in which Ella is wanting to be know for and that is the idea of vintage being old school and this
appearance she is giving complements that, with the plain white shirt we can see a little of and not giving much
make up it shows this idea even further as well as looking at the design for the digipak cover.
