Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra rises to No. 2 in world rankings
Neeraj Chopra, an Indian javelin thrower, has gained 14 places
to become world No. 2 in the latest World Athletics
Rankings after his sensational performance in the Tokyo
Olympics 2020.
Neeraj Chopra on August 7, 2021, had created history by
becoming the first Indian to win a gold in track and field in
the Olympics.
Chopra threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m and picked
the yellow metal at the Tokyo Games.
As per the latest update issued by the World Athletics, the 23-
years old Neeraj Chopra is only behind Johannes Vetter who
has a 1396 score.

3. National Commission for Homoeopathy (Amendment) Bill, 2021
Parliament on August 11, 2021, passed the National Commission for
Homoeopathy (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The Bill will be sent to the President
for his assent.
The bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on August 9, 2021, which the lower
house cleared on August 10, 2021.
The National Commission for Homoeopathy (Amendment) Bill, 2021, aims
at amending the National Commission for Homoeopathy Act, 2020.
Moved by Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ayush, the National
Commission for Homoeopathy (Amendment) Bill, 2021, aims to save the
actions done, decisions made, liability incurred by the Board of Governors
constituted as per the provisions of the Homoeopathy Central Council
(Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, till the constitution of National Commission
under National Commission for Homoeopathy Act, 2020.

4. Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 to begin from August 13
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has organized the Fit India
Freedom Run 2.0 as a part of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit
Mahotsav – India @ 75.
The Freedom Run 2.0 will commemorate the 75th Independence
Day across the country.
•The campaign is based on the concept that one can run
anywhere, anytime.
•Individuals can register themselves on the Fit India web portal run
by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

5. Delhi Government launches faceless transport services
The Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal on August
11, 2021, launched the faceless transport services in the
National Capital.
Under the initiative by the Kejriwal Government, the 33
transport services will go completely faceless and
online, except for the driving tests and fitness tests for
the vehicles.
An e-learner license can be obtained through an online
test.
In the first phase of the application, the applications will
be screened and documents will be verified and then
they will be approved by the motor vehicle inspector or
the motor licensing officers for further processing.

6. India’s Deep Ocean Mission: What is it and its significance
Deep Ocean Mission is an initiative by the Government of
India to explore the deep ocean for resources and develop
deep-sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean
resources.
The Mission will send a manned submersible ‘Matsya-
6000’ up to a depth of 6,000 metres in the ocean with
three people aboard.
The submersible will be equipped with technologies such
as scientific sensors, and tools for deep-sea mining,
exploration of deep-sea marine biodiversity and mineral
resources.
•The manned submersible ‘Matsya-6000’ has been
designed by the Indian Space Research Organization
(ISRO) in an MoU signed with the National Institute of
Ocean Technology (NIOT) which is responsible for the
navigation and electronics aspect of the submersible.

7. Daddy Long Leg Spiders genetically engineered by scientists to get shorter legs-
Scientists curated the ‘Daddy Short Legs’ with the goal of studying
the evolutionary process that causes the legs of 'Daddy Long Legs'
to grow so far out in the natural circumstances.
Scientists have done something with the species of house
spider, Daddy Long Legs, that no one probably has ever seen
before.
By tinkering with the DNA of Daddy Long Leg Spiders, the
researchers have developed ‘Daddy Short legs’ individuals.
Some find the Daddy Long Leg spiders attractive, while others find
them extremely disturbing. Regardless of how people feel, daddy
long leg spiders can be easily spotted scurrying up a wall or
through its web someplace. However, the familiar spider species is
not harmful at all.

8. Parliament passes 127th Constitution Amendment Bill
restoring state's power to make their own OBC list
The Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill, 2021, was passed by the Parliament on
August 11, 2021, with Rajya Sabha giving its approval to the bill.
The Rajya Sabha approved the bill with the majority of the strength of the house
and not less than the two-thirds majority of the members present in the house.
187 members in Rajya Sabha voted in favour of the 127th Constitution Amendment
Bill while none against it. The house also neglected the amendments moved by
some of the opposition members.
Lok Sabha on August 10, 2021, had passed the Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill,
2021, unanimously. The bill was passed in the Lower House of Parliament with more
than two-third majority of the house strength as well as the members present in the
house.
The legislation aims at restoring the power of the States and the Union Territories to
make their own OBC list. During the division of the votes, 385 members in Lok
Sabha voted in the favour of the bill, and none were against it.

9. World Elephant Day 2021
Every year, August 12 is observed as World Elephant Day
to draw focus towards conservation and protection of
elephants across the world amid poaching, human-
elephant conflict, mistreatment in captivity, and habitat
loss.
World Elephant Day aims to accelerate efforts to offer
better protection to elephants, improving enforcement
policies, prevent the trade of ivory, illegal poaching,
conserve elephant habitat, better captive environments
for elephants, and reintroduce the captive elephants back
in their natural sanctuaries.

10. Scientists develop new method to identify
proteins in the living brain;
Researchers, for the first time, have come up with a new and successful
approach to identify the proteins inside different types of neurons in
the brain of a living animal.
The new study which was led by Northwestern University and the
University of Pittsburgh offers a giant step in understanding the brain’s
millions of distinct proteins.
As the building blocks of all the cells including neurons, proteins hold
keys to better understanding complex brain diseases such as
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, which can further lead to the development
of new treatments.

11. ISRO’s GISAT-1 satellite fails to reach orbit, mission to be re-scheduled
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on August 12,
2021, launched the Geo-Imaging Satellite (GISAT-1) ‘EOS-03’
on the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle- F10 (GSLV-
F10) at 5.43 am IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre
(SDSC) at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
However, the GSLV-F10/EOS-03 satellite mission failed to
reach orbit due to a technical setback in the Cryogenic
Upper Stage ignition. The performance of the rocket’s first
and second stages went as planned.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State Science &
Technology and Earth Sciences (Independent Charge) after
speaking with Dr K Sivan, Chairman, ISRO, said that the
GSLV-F10/EOS-03 satellite mission can be re-scheduled.

12. International Youth Day 2021: Date, theme, and why the
day is significant
International Youth Day 2021: Every year, International Youth Day was
observed on August 12. Governments and citizens all over the world
come together to celebrate the youth on International youth day and
to recognize and bring attention to the problems faced by them.
The International Youth Day was commemorated by the United Nations
on August 12 in 1999.
The decision of declaring the International Youth Day was taken based
on the recommendation made by the World Conference of Minister
Responsible for the youth in Lisbon to the United Nations General
Assembly.
