BACKGROUND INFORMATION
What are Interpersonal skills?
Interpersonal skills are skills we use every day when we communicate and interact with people, both
individually or in groups. Interpersonal skills include a wide variety of skills though many are centered
around communication and understanding body language.
Session 2: Let`s Talk
Areas of Interpersonal Skills:
 Verbal communication
 Non-verbal communication
 Listening skills
 Negotiation
 Problem-solving
 Decision-making
 Assertiveness
Need for Interpersonal skills:
Interpersonal skills are the powerful weapons people use to interact & communicate with individuals in
an organisational environment. Interpersonal skills include a wide variety of skills, though many are
centred around communication, such as listening, questioning and understanding body language. They
also include the skills and attributes associated with emotional intelligence, or being able to understand
and manage your own and others’ emotions.
People with good interpersonal skills tend to be able to work well in a team or group, and with other
people more generally. They are able to communicate effectively with others, whether family, friends,
colleagues, customers or clients. Interpersonal skills are therefore vital in all areas of life at work, in
education and socially.
Tips for improving Interpersonal skills:
 Cultivate a positive outlook. Teach yourself to be positive by reminding yourself every day of
the good things about your life and your job.
 Control your emotions. Work isn’t the place to be overly emotional. Whether you’re extremely
irritated, severely depressed or ecstatically happy, take a deep breath and tone your emotions
down. Always express yourself in a calm, patient manner.
 Acknowledge others’ expertise. One of the best ways to build trust at work is to let your co-
workers know you appreciate their expertise. Ask for their help on projects and give credit
where credit is due.
 Find one good trait in every co-worker. Not all of us like every single person we work with
but you can’t let personal preference get in the way of peak performance. If a colleague’s
personality clashes completely with your own, the best way to handle the situation is by
finding at least one good trait in that person—preferably something professional.
 Practice active listening. You can do this by maintaining eye contact with the speaker, nodding
your head, and repeating what he or she says in your own words. The speaker will feel
respected and you’re likely to be able to recall the conversation more easily afterwards.
SessionObjective: To impart listening skills and improve ability to understand the problem of others.
Duration: 1 hour
Material: Projector, laptop, speaker
Methods: Trigger film and discussion
Steps:
STEP 1: Facilitator will introduce the participants to the concept of empathy building and its
importance.
STEP 2: Facilitator will show the participants a short film. This will improve their listening skills
which is important in every situation.
STEP 3: Facilitator will ask the participants to come up with the review of the film shown.
STEP 4: All the review points will be noted on a white board by the facilitator and discussion will be
conducted.

Types of Empathy
Cognitive Empathy Emotional Empathy Somatic Empathy
Cognitive Empathy
Cognitive empathy is the largely conscious drive to recognize accurately and understand
another's emotional state. Sometimes we call this kind of empathy “perspective taking.
-When we practice cognitive empathy (also known as perspective-taking), we focus on our ability
to understand where a person is coming from. It relates heavily back to the platinum rule: instead
of thinking about how we would like to be treated in a given situation, we think about how the
other person would like to be treated in a given situation.
Emotional Empathy
Emotional empathy, also called affective empathy or primitive empathy, is the subjective state
resulting from emotional contagion. It is our automatic drive to respond appropriately to
another's emotions.
Somatic Empathy
Somatic empathy is a physical reaction, probably based on mirror neuron responses, in
the somatic nervous system. Somatic empathy, is to feel in your body what another may be
experiencing at physical level.
Elements of Empathy:
 Understanding Others
 Developing Others
 Having a Service Orientation
 Leveraging Diversity
 Political Awareness
What is Empathy Building?
Empathy is the ability to understand or feelwhat another person is experiencing from within their frame
of reference i.e. the capacity to place oneself in other`s position.
Need for Empathy Building:
Empathy is a foundation for building bridges between individuals, understanding each other`s
complex emotions, gaining a diverse perspective, and leveraging relationships for collaboration
and progress.

Areas of Interpersonal Skills:  Verbal communication  Non-verbal communication  Listening skills  Negotiation  Problem-solving  Decision-making  Assertiveness Need for Interpersonal skills: Interpersonal skills are the powerful weapons people use to interact & communicate with individuals in an organisational environment. Interpersonal skills include a wide variety of skills, though many are centred around communication, such as listening, questioning and understanding body language. They also include the skills and attributes associated with emotional intelligence, or being able to understand and manage your own and others’ emotions. People with good interpersonal skills tend to be able to work well in a team or group, and with other people more generally. They are able to communicate effectively with others, whether family, friends, colleagues, customers or clients. Interpersonal skills are therefore vital in all areas of life at work, in education and socially. Tips for improving Interpersonal skills:  Cultivate a positive outlook. Teach yourself to be positive by reminding yourself every day of the good things about your life and your job.  Control your emotions. Work isn’t the place to be overly emotional. Whether you’re extremely irritated, severely depressed or ecstatically happy, take a deep breath and tone your emotions down. Always express yourself in a calm, patient manner.  Acknowledge others’ expertise. One of the best ways to build trust at work is to let your co- workers know you appreciate their expertise. Ask for their help on projects and give credit where credit is due.  Find one good trait in every co-worker. Not all of us like every single person we work with but you can’t let personal preference get in the way of peak performance. If a colleague’s personality clashes completely with your own, the best way to handle the situation is by finding at least one good trait in that person—preferably something professional.  Practice active listening. You can do this by maintaining eye contact with the speaker, nodding your head, and repeating what he or she says in your own words. The speaker will feel respected and you’re likely to be able to recall the conversation more easily afterwards.
