This document discusses women who commit crimes in India. It notes that while most convicted offenders are male, women also engage in criminal acts like shoplifting, theft, fraud, and prostitution. The reasons women commit crimes include needing money, taking revenge, gaining power, or feeling unrewarded. While crimes by women are often underreported, the document argues they are on the rise in India. It provides examples of famous female criminals in India and examines how society and the legal system sometimes treat women criminals differently than men.
3. GENDER PATTERNS IN CRIME
•4 out of 5 convicted offenders
in England and Wales are male.
•A higher proportion of male
than female offenders are
convicted of violent offences
(such as Homicide, assault, sex
offences and robbery).
•Males are more likely to be
repeat offenders and have
longer criminal careers.
•Women gang members are
controlled by their male
counterparts.
4. DO WOMEN COMMIT MORE CRIME?
•Sociologists argue that
they underestimate the amount of
female offending.
•Female crimes such as shoplifting
are less likely to be reported.
•Prostitution – which females are
much more likely than males to
engage in – is unlikely to be
reported by either party.
•Even when women’s crimes are
detected or reported, they are less
likely to be prosecuted or, if
prosecuted, more likely to be let off
relatively lightly.
5. WHAT CRIMES DO WOMEN
COMMIT?
•Kidnapping
•Shoplifting
•Robbery & Stealing goods
•Thefts & Frauds
•Murders
•Prostitution
•Drug offences
•Property crimes
6. REASONS FOR WHY WOMEN
COMMIT CRIME?
•Need to earn more money
•In order to take revenge
•Proving themselves
•Attaining power
•When women are left with burden
of children (in case of abandoned
women)
•Feeling of being unrewarded at
family or workplace
•Property issues
9. SOCIAL STIGMAS AND NEWS:
•Psychologists say that aggression in women is more of a concern now.
•SC said that a woman convict having three minor children would be a
ground for courts to impose a lenient sentence on her.
•Mercy may not be shown in case of a woman who has committed a crime as
part of a terrorist group.
•SC ruled that being a woman cannot serve as grounds for lesser punishment
in all cases. Stressing that in this world of gender equality, women should be
treated at par with men even as regards equal offences committed by them.
10. CASE STUDY
Once I saw in Mumbai local
train that a women slit the
pocket of a man and he saw it
happening. As soon as the
woman came to know about
the fact that she was caught
by him, she scream loudly
that he touched her in an
inappropriate way. This is
what happens.
13. CONCLUSION
•We are not supporting women
criminals rather we want people to
accept the fact that just like men can
commit crimes as a mistake even
women can and THEY DO!
•We need to be aware and
precautious about the fact that
women CAN BE CRIMINALS too.
