2. • Clean the bite wound with “soap” and water for
10-15 mins.
• (If soap is not available, flush with water alone.)
• Apply 70% alcohol or povidone-iodine, if available.
3. • If it is bleeding, put clean cloth/bandage and
apply pressure on to it to stop the bleeding.
• Visit the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
4. • Do not apply anything else on
wound.(spices/mirchi/dirt/sand.. etc)
• Do not ignore even if there are just minor
scratches.
What not to do ?
5. • Decide among treatment available based on
the severity of wound :
a. ANTI- TETANUS VACCINE
b. Series of shots of ANTI-RABIES VACCINE
(most effective way to prevent rabies)
(Post exposure prophylaxis)
c. ANTI-RABIES SERUM (IMMUNOGLOBULINS)
• Clean and dress the wound
• Give antibiotics, if needed

• Prevented with 4-5 shots, now.
(Given on- 0, 3, 7, 28 days)

7. • There is NO effective treatment for
established RABIES.
• Rabies is fatal disease.
(Near 100% death rate)
(Prevention is cure)
• It is never just a dog bite.
20,000 people die of RABIES per year in INDIA
and 40% of them are innocent kids under 15
years.
WHY ALL THIS ?
8. If the dog is properly vaccinated there in no
need for ANTI- RABIES vaccination.
But do proper wound care.
But if, in doubt, do get vaccinated
immediately after bite.
