11. What is Coining
• Coining (metalworking) A beneficial feature
that in some metals, the plastic flow reduces
surface grain size, and work hardens the
surface, while the material deeper in the part
retains its toughness and ductility.
• In our case, the Coining occurs when the pin
seal radius is reacting against the box seal
taper.
• The pin seal radius is plastically deformed
to match the shape of the box seal taper.
• The plastic deformation is permanent.
