2. The following footage is from the
movie 50/50…

3. Camera shots.
Opens with midshot to show the setting (In the hospital)
Close up of Adam’s face to show emotion- Shows audience this is a
serious and possibly deadly situation.
Camera pans in slowly on Adam as he makes his short monologue
about his conern for the treatment. The camera zooming in slowly
encourages and provokes the audience to listen and pay attention
to what is said.
Another close up of mother and son to show the concern and
sadness.
4. Camera shots continuation
Camera cuts to close ups of all Adam’s friends and family; all
waiting on the news of Adam.- Shows he is loved by his family and
that a lot rests upon this operation. Shows the tragedy of the
situation. – All shots are close ups. All shots pan around the
characters being shown. There is no stationary camera shots. Help
to add fluency.
5. Sound
Music starts with only a few piano keys. Begins to build up as the
tension and emotion builds. – Song is sad, and involves loss. As
Adam’s monologue begins the music becomes more prominent to
support the emotion of the scene. As Adam is wheeled into the
operating theatre, it becomes all we can hear. The lyrics are ‘I can’t
always be found… If you need me x3 I can’t always be found…’
Supports the idea of death and loss; this person is going to die. The
music continues as we see all his friends and family affected. The
tone of voice in the video for the song is very deep and low with
little fluctuation to show that this is a sad time and situation.
6. Editing.
The editing is slow, especially at the start; there is a 20 second shot.
Following this there are close ups. When Adam is in the operation
there is relatively quick cutting to different members of family and
friends to show all the different people worrying for Adam. Each
shot gives a basic amount of information about the whereabouts of
each character and then moves on as not to bore the audience.
7. All these components used in combination make for a very
evocative and moving piece of film. The audience feels
sympathetic towards Adam and hopes he will survive the
operation. I believe this is a truly great scene as it utilises all
components of film perfectly.
