A2 Media Studies: Lyrical analysis (XXXTENTACION - Revenge)
1. [Intro]
I think I, I think I finally
Found a way to forgive myself
From mistakes I made in my past
I think that's the first step, right?
You agree?
From this I can interpret a scene where he is trying to reason
with an object or somebody with the mistakes hes made, and
wants to make the first step to move on.
He can be holding a picture of a loved one, such as family or
girlfriend to highlight he made a mistake with them.
Another way of putting this into a music video would be the
main character sitting on a bench, and then getting up
towards the end when it says ‘You agree’ to start the
performance of singing.
2. I've dug two graves for us, my dear
Can't pretend that I was perfect, leavin' you in fear
Oh man, what a world, the things I hear
If I could act on my revenge, then, oh, would I?
Performance of the main character singing to the
camera, with him saying ‘what a world, the things I
hear’, he will throw his arms out and the scene
could cut to a tv showing events in the world e.g.
school shootings.
When it says revenge he can clench his fist. (fix this)
3. Some kill, some steal, some break your heart
And you thought that I would let it go and let you walk
Broken hearts, break bones, so break up fast
And I don't wanna let it go, so in my grave I'll rot
Performance of main character cuts in between his singing and
walking down an empty road, showing the emptiness of life and
how immoral it is aligning with the lyrics. The first cut will occur
at the second line of the verse, cuts back to performance at ‘I
would let it go’ and back to walking at ‘Let you walk’. Both sides
will mainly be medium/close up shots.
4. I've dug two graves for us, my dear
Can't pretend that I was perfect, leavin' you in
fear
Oh man, what a world, the things I hear
If I could act on my revenge, then, oh, would
I?
Performance of the main character singing to the
camera, with him saying ‘what a world, the things
I hear’, he will throw his arms out and the scene
could cut to a tv showing events in the world. The
TV will be static to show the cracks in these
events. This time the TV will represent the North
Korea crisis. The TV will be to the side of the MC
and the performer will point to it when it comes
to ‘the thing I hear’, to show the things he hears in
this world aren’t pleasant nor positive.
5. In my grave, I'll rot
In my grave, I'll rot
In my grave, I'll rot
In my grave, I'll rot
In my grave, I'll rot
In my grave, I'll rot
In my grave, I'll rot
I'll rot, I'll rot, I'll rot
Is my pain your freedom?
Is all of my pain your freedom?
Enjoy…
This’ll lead to the ending scenes of the music
video. In the performance the singer will sing
these lyrics, and cut between the narrative
walking down the road towards a dead end to
highlight he’s hit his grave and he’ll rot.
The main character will proceed to turn off the TV
when it comes to I’ll rot, I’ll rot, I’ll rot and throw a
fist to his heart when saying ‘Is my pain your
freedom’, ‘Enjoy’.
