IRELChavaraislocated10kmnorthofKeralaand85km
fromTrivandrum,capitalofKeralaand135byroadfromKochinisperhapsblessedwiththebestmineralsand
depositofthecountry.Theplantoperatesonaminingareacontainingashighas40%heavymineralsandexten
dingoveralengthof22kmsinthebeltofNeendakaraandKayamkulam.
Thedepositisquiterich
withrespecttoIlmenite,RutileandZirconandthemineralIlmenitehappenstobeofweatheredvarietyanalysi
ng60%TitaniumDioxide(TiO2).ThepresentannualproductioncapacityofChavaraunitengagedindryasw
ellaswet(dredging/Upgradation)miningandmineralseparationstandsat2,00,000tonesofIlmenite,1,14,5
00tonesofRutile,11,750tonesofZirconsand10,000tonesofSillimanite.Inadditiontothat,theplanthasfacil
itiesforannualproductionofgroundZirconcalledZirflourandMicroziroftheorderof6,000tonesand300ton
esrespectively.

andleadingpublicsectorundertakingundertheDepartmentofAtomicEnergy(DAE).ItisanISO14001:200
0;OHSAS18000certifiedcompanysuppliesbeachsandmineralstotheforeignanddomesticmarket.Itcater

Rareearthselementsseriesofchemicalelementsofthepe
riodictable.Therareelementswithatomicnumbers57through71.Intheearlyyearstheseelementswerecons
ideredasrareelementsandsotheyarecalledasrareearthmetals.Latermanyelementsinthisgroupwerefound
splendidbuttheirnameremained unchanged.
Theprimarysourceofrareearthelementsisgreenishyellowcolouredmineralsand,whichisMonazite.Its
availability innatureisconfined
tocertainbeachesandrockfoundincertaincountries.ThebeachescontainingtheMonazitearefoundmixed
withothermineralstoo.Mostofthese areores
forvaluablemetals.Anoreisamineralformwhichmetalcanbeseparatedeconomically.TheseoresareIlmeni
te,RutileandZircon.IlmeniteandRutileformstheoreforTitanium,ZirconforZirconium.EventhoughAlum
inumbearingmetalGarnetandSillimanitearealsofoundalongwiththesebeachsandminerals.Buttheyareno
tcommerciallyexploitedforAluminumproductionduetoeconomicreasons.HoweverGarnetandSillimani
teintheirnaturalformarecommerciallysignificant.Ilmenitewhichisblackincolourconstitutesamajorchuc
koftheseminerals(60%)presenceofthesemineralsmakesthebeachesappearblack.Thesemineralsarecom
merciallyknownasbeachsandmineralsorheavyminerals.
Theoriginofbeachsandisfromrocks,whicharerichwithheavyminerals.Thissand
particlereachesseathroughrivers.Thesealevelisnotremainingconstant.Itisregardedthatthesealevel.Itisn
owreally100metersabovewhatwehadseen20,000yearsago.Thiswhitesandseenatthebeachareacontainst
hemainconstituteasQuartz.Thisislighterthanblacksand.Asaresultofmovementoftheseathissandwillero
deawayandblacksandgetdeposited.Theblacksandthusdeposited100yearsagoisminedandprocessed.
Intheyear1789Fr.WilliamGeorge(1761-
1817)discoveredIlmeniteatknowerinEnglandandstatedthatthisblacksandcontainssomeimportantmetal
.Buthefailedtodiscoverwhichmetalitwas.Afterseveraltime,intheyear1875theHungarianscientistMartin
HeenWitchKlapporthfoundthesamemetalcontainsintheRutilemineralsaboutwhichFr.WilliamGeorge
mentioned.AfteraseriesofinvestigationsarefoundthosemetalscontentasTitaniumafter“Titan”ofGreekm
ythology.

Technologydevelopedovertheyearhasmadethebeachsandmineralstobeutilisedi
navarietyof“industrialanddomestic”applications.Monazitewasmainlyusedinthegasmantleindustry.Aft
ertheadventofelectricityitsdemanddecreasedinthegasmantleindustry.IlmeniteandRutileareusedinhight
emperaturerefactoryindustry,ceramicsindustryetc.Zirconisusedinfoundries,ceramics,refectoriesandin
themanufacturingofZirconiumchemicals,metalsandalloys.Zirflourisusedinfoundriesforhightemperatu
recastings.Garnetisusedinthemanufacturingofabrassivepolishingglass,TVtubes,forsandblastingandfor
waterfiltration.Thebeachsandminingandprocessingindustryhasvastfuturebecauseoftheirdemandinnuc
learindustrytoo.InthepresentscenarioofboomingeconomicslikeIndiaandchinathereisahugedemandfort
hebeachsandminerals,Ilmeniteinparticular.
ThecurrentworldproductioncapacityofIlmeniteandotherTitaniumfeedstocksfo
rproductionofTitaniumDioxidePigment,Titaniummetal,Weldingelectrodesetcisusedaround70lakhsmi
lliontonesperannum(tpa).ApproximatelyhalfofthisfrombeachsandsandthebalancefromIlmeniterocks
mostlyfoundinCanadaandNorway.InviewofthelimitedsupplyofnaturalRutileitsshareofconsumptionin
pigmentproductionisrathersmalland55%ofitstotalavailabilityofabout5lakhstpaisusedinthenon-
pigmentapplicationspredominantlyintheproductionofweldingrodsandTitaniummetal.Thepresentprod
uction
capacityofpigmentintheworldisjustabove4lakhstpa.NorthAmericaisthelargestproducerwith37%oftheg
lobalcapacity.Europewith32%capacityisthesecondlargestproducerandAsia-
Pacificregionwith21%capacityisthethird.Thebalance10%distributedamongtherestoftheworld.
Indiahasthelargestresourcesbaseof278milliontonesforIlmenite.Thisist

(IREL)wasincorporatedasaprivatelimitedcompanyjointlyownedbythegovt.ofIndiaandGovt.ofTravanc
ore,Cochinwiththeprimaryintentionoftakingupcommercialscaleprocessingofmonazitesandatitsfirstun
itnamelyRareEarthsDivision(RED)AluvaandKeralafortherecoveryofthorium.
Afterbecomingafullfledgedcentralgovt.undertakingin1963undertheadministra
tivecontrolofDepartmentofAtomicEnergy(DAE),IRELtookoveranumberofprivatecompaniesengaged
inminingandseparationofbeachsandmineralsinsouthernpartofthecountryandestablishedtwomoredivisi
onsoneatChavara,KeralaandotheratManavalakurichi(MK), Tamilnadu.
After agapof20yearsIRELcommissioned itslargestdivision
calledOrissaSandComplex(OSCOM)atChatrapur,Orissa.TodayIRELoperatesthesefourunitswithcorp
orateofficeinMumbai andproduces/sellssixheavymineralsnamely Ilmenite,
Rutile,Zircon,Monazite,SillimaniteandGarnetaswellasvariousvalueadded products IREL
ismakingprofitforthelast6yearswithitssalesturnoverreachingapeakexceedingRs:2600millionsin2000-
01,withexportcomponentofaboveRs:1000millions.

nameoftheGermenchemistMr.HerrSchombergwhohasrealisedthattheshiningyellowishbrownparticles
stickingtocoir,acoconutfibershippedfromIndia(1909)containedMonazite.
Thissparkledthediscoveryofvastdepositofmonazitearichsourceofrareearthsagr
oupofelementswithawidevarietyofusesinindustryandscience.AfewplantswereoperatingatChavaraand
Manavalakurichifortheseparationofmonazite.

Thegovt.ofIndiasetupatomicenergycommissionunderthechairmanshipofDr:HomiBhabha.Theexporto
fMonazitewasstoppedandthepossibilityofsettingupafacilitytoprocessthebeachsandmineralfortheprod
uctionofRareEarthswasexamined.
1950:-IRELwasincorporatedatBombay
1951:-IRELbecomethefull-
fledgedgovt.undertakingundertheDepartmentofAtomicEnergyandcommissionedconstructionofitsrare
earthsplantsatUdyogamandalinKerala.
1952:-RareearthplantwasdedicatedtothenationonDec24bytheJawaharlalNehru.1955:-
