Evaluation Question 2
How does your media product present
different social groups?
Teachers
• In our Thriller opening we
have represented teachers in
a negative way. The teacher
in our opening is very
aggressive towards once
student and also ignorant to
the others. The teacher is
purposely bullying the
student as it is shocking to
the audience to see an adult
threatening a child.
Students
• In our film the students
have been represented
as ignorant. The most
ignorant would be the
protagonist who evidently
is very sidetracked then you
have the attitude of students
shown through the person on his phone
(bottom left) and the other one who is
slouched on his chair (top left)
Stereotypes of younger people:
Positive – Social, Youthful, energetic, etc.
Negative - lazy, disrespectful, irritable
Male
The majority of the people
starring in our film were Male.
We purposely made most of the
students male as they were in a
detention and females are saw
as more innocent. The teacher
was also cast as male because
males are seen as much more
aggressive than females.
Stereotypes of males –
Masculine, strong, don’t care
attitude, thickheaded, etc.
Female
• We only have one female cast
member in the film opening.
This is a clear use of tokenism
which means recruiting a
mixture of social groups to give
the appearance of equality
within the cast. In this case
there is only one female this is
so that both male and female
genders are showcased. She
also helps show different
personalities.
Stereotypes of Females – feminine, girly,
sweet, innocent, spoilt, moody, etc.
Existing media products which include
these these social groups
• Donnie Darko is a thriller which is set at a
school, therefore it represents students and
teachers. What makes the representation
different with the teacher is that it is a female
teacher and she is portrayed with a positive
attitude. The protagonist is also male and is
‘socially awkward’ and has a ‘super power’.
