Rach evaluation media-question 2
1. Q2:How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. What is Representation?
Representation in media has quite a few definitions, such as:
• It is how the media represents the world to us
• It is a depiction of something in real life but does not show
real life.
• It is often stereotypical, which in most cases negative to
which perpetuates stereotypes within our society.
….. And lots more!!
3. S o c ia l G r o u p s
Inmy film opening we have represented various social groups:
Children
Parents
Young to mid age female adults
Out of all the brief three social groups mentioned above, I would say
children was the main social group. This is because a child was our main
character in our film.
4. Representation of Children
• In most films children are often brought across as innocent. For example;
Matilda, Pursuit of happiness, daddy day care, miracle on 34th street and lots
more.
5. However, sometimes this can be the opposite. Children can be
represented as evil to some extent, which cause the child to be
considered as demented. Examples of films which have represented
children like this are the omen, orphan, sixth sense, hide & seek.
6. Positive or Negative?
I think in terms of deciding whether I’ve represented my social groups as negative or
positive is not something I can give one answer or a specific answer to because we
represented both. The child was represented as a young innocent child who was
happy to go home with her new adopted family, however she then turns to a
disturbed child which then shows the social group of children being represented
negatively. Little do we know that this child is suffering from a mental illness
called schizophrenia which results in her behavior.
Relating to real media, the plot of our film is based from the film of the orphan where
the child ‘Esther’ is the girl suffering from the mental illness.
