The document discusses the representation of social groups in the film "The Catch". It portrays school children, with the protagonist Gemma being a student, and caretakers, with the loner caretaker character seeking comfort in young girls. It represents typical thriller social groups - the male pedophile caretaker and the helpless school girl victim. It also discusses how the film uses themes of paranoia by contradicting the assumption that schools are safe, and moral panics by locating the pedophile character in a school to effectively evoke outrage.

2. What social groups are present in our film Within “The Catch” we portray certain social groups which include: School children - The film is based around a school environment ,our protagonist Gemma is a student. Caretakers- Our other protagonist is a Caretaker ,he is the typical loner character who tries to seek comfort in young school girls.
3. How social groups are represented within our film. Within our film we include certain social groups that are typical to thrillers. We have our stereotypical male pedophile role played by the caretaker. This works well within our film as the audience are able to automatically associate with the characteristics of his behaviour. The other character we have is the stereotypical helpless school girl. This works well in our film as her vulnerability makes the role more believable.
4. Paranoia Paranoia is a theme that runs through our film. We chose to play on the assumption that a school atmosphere is a safe place. Within our film we contradict this assumption. At certain points in our film Gemma becomes paranoid ,sensing someone is watching her. As the audience is conscious of Gemma being watched , we are able to create a sense of tension.
5. Media representations of paedophiles Media representations of pedophiles is undoubtedly negative. They are among the most hated individuals in society. The media constantly uses pedophile roles within films to evoke nurturing instincts allowing the audience to feel empathy.
6. Moral Panics Within the media certain moral standards are set, When these standards are violated society feel a sense of outrage. For the inspiration of our film we have taken into account certain case studies. An example of this is the case of Ian Huntley the abductor and murderer of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. In a similar way to our caretaker, hiskillings were sexually motivated. By locating a paedophile in a school environment we can evoke the moral panic which makes our character more effective.
