Essay On North American Myths
Myth of the Mound Builders The construction of the great earthworks of North American antiquity
were shrouded in mystery as the first European explores who discovered them were astonished.
They were not just astonished at the sight of the massive mounds that were of monument proportion,
but at the thought of who created these great feats of human ingenuity. Who could construct such
monuments in an area of the world that was secluded from the known world for thousands of years?
There are many myths surrounding the construction of the mounds of North America, but none are
more troubling and perplexing than the idea that Natives of the Americas were incapable of such
feats of ingenuity. I will focus on the myths surrounding the builders of the great mounds of North
America, and the research that archeology has used to clarify some of these myths in the search for
the true nature of the builders. The earliest myths surrounding the construction of the mounds
excluded Natives North American and any insight they had about the mounds. The contemporary
idea of the 18th century was that an advanced civilization built the mounds that had didn't have any
connection with Native North American groups of the Northwest. The civilization that was

(Trigger 20) Throughout much of the nineteenth century, the image that was portrayed of the
American native was skewed to resemble barbarism, and at best the noble savage. This image came
from the writings that had an objectified, ahistorical, and normative description on the manners and
customs of natives. (Mann 4) The influence that this had on American archaeology lasted throughout
the nineteenth century, and the portrayal of natives as "inferior to civilized man" had a lasting effect
on land seizures by European settlers. (Trigger

The Mound Building Peoples Of The Eastern United States
Throughout history there have been ebbs and flows identified within all facets of human history, and
the Native American mound–builders were no different. The mound–building peoples of the Eastern
United States (U.S.) along with the Aztec's, Mayan and the Inca were revolutionary economists,
farmers and communal architects. Before the Europeans came in contact with the mound–building
tribes in the 1500's, a thriving nation was had developed into an economic powerhouse and maintain
its position of power and commerce for a few hundred years. We would be remiss to not preserve
the archeological remnants of the Adena, Hopewellian and later the Mississippians. Each of the
many built mounds holds unique facts and details to how the nation thrived and developed over
several centuries.
One of the most influential and progressive cultures in North American history was the mound–
building Native American tribes. The most significant aspects of the mound–building peoples was
the multitude of mounds built for burials, ceremonial and ritual events, temples and other important
buildings, and effigy mounds in the shape of various animals (Colin Calloway, 2012, p. 32).
Archeologists classify mound building Indians of the Southeast into three major
chronological/cultural divisions: the Archaic, the Woodland, and the Mississippian (United States
National Park Service, n.d.). Although Mississippians are known for their mounds; they were also
the first fully domesticated farmers cultivating

The Enlightened Histori An Article Authored By Jeffrey...
Aregai 1 The Enlightened Archaeologist – an article authored by Jeffrey Hantman and Gary
Dunham chronicles Thomas Jefferson's investigation of the Indian burial mound located on the
South Fork of the Rivanna River in the 18th century. The site excavated by Jefferson, however, is no
longer visible, most likely due to dissipation by inevitable natural occurrences (I.E. excessive
rainfall, flooding rivers, etc.) or human activity such as farming. The "Father of American
Archaeology" correctly predicts the latter in his book, Notes on the State of Virginia, in which he
states, mounds "...put under cultivation are much reduced in their height, and spread in width, by the
plough, and will probably disappear in time" (1787). Fortunately for Archaeologists of the late 20th
century (1988) an Indian burial mound identical to that of the one Jefferson described in his book
was uncovered just 14 miles from the South Fork of the Rivanna River. The Rapidan mound – in
spite of being reduced to its southern edge, provided archaeologists' Hantman, Dunham, and
colleagues a unique, yet waning opportunity to record and excavate the quickly abrading site. What
they discovered from their digging surprised them; the content and order within the mound also
resembled Thomas Jefferson's descriptive notes. However, what he noted as the random placement

In addition, the heads of scepters was found in same layer and those emphasize the people in the

mud–bricks from Maydos–Kilisetepe come from the Late Bronze Age site of Apsalos in
Macedonian region of Greece. The work on pottery and small finds of Maydos Kilisetepe Mound
has been still ongoing; however, result of preliminary studies demonstrates that Maydos Kilisetepe
Mound had close relationship with Northern Greece and Bulgaria during Late Bronze Age.
Implementation of clay relief in architecture was detected in 2nd Millenium BC in an area spanning
from Northern Greece to Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, also motifs on the reliefs of Late Bronze

Myths Of The Mound Builders
Myths of the Mound Builders The first time I heard about the Mound Builders, which was in this
class, these people seemed like a very primitive group. What was so exciting about having the skill
of piling up a bunch of dirt. Then I was able to see some of these mounds and the scale was nothing
I had imagined. These mounds were huge and also contained distinct structural shapes. Tombs,
houses, and religious structures were constructed in or on top of the mounds. What made the
edifices even more amazing was the time period they were built. Constructed all the way back to
3000 B.C., the mounds rivaled the most advanced engineering techniques in the world. An
interesting aspect involved with the Mound Builders were the way they were ... Show more content

They were able to obtain huge assembly of artifacts and precise surveys that are still used to this
day. Another major contributor to the understanding of the Mound Builders was Cyrus Thomas. He
was an entomologist and botanist that was made the head of the Division of Mound Exploration.
Thomas gathered his assistants and set out into the Mississippi Valley to study the earthworks.
During this time the mounds were being destroyed by looters and fought to keep the mounds in
good condition. Over seven years Thomas was able to survey more than two thousand mounds and
collect tens of thousands of artifacts. He then wrote an a work called the "Report on the Mound
Explorations of the Bureau of Ethnology." In this report Cyrus was able to explain the diversity and
integrity of the Mound Builder culture. The Native Americans were now able to be viewed as people
who had a rich past, not one of barbarism as thought before. These were people that deserved
respect and gratitude for providing such interesting achievements for mankind. As one can see, the
earthworks of the Ohio and Mississippi valley are critical in the understanding the past. They
provide great clues about the migration of the Ancient people of this land. It is still not understood
how the Western World was settled and under great debate. Any clues that are available should be
used and the mounds are a great source. Native

Southwest Savanna Environmental Analysis
The Southwest Savanna is characterized by the hilltops, rivers and valleys and steep wooded slopes
within the area. The average growing season in this part of southern Wisconsin is 153 days, making
it the fourth longest growing season of the different landscapes within the state (Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources 2015). Of all the land in this section of Wisconsin, about 3.5%
belongs to state, county, or municipal governments; this includes the state parks, natural areas, and
wildlife areas. (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2015). In the past, a majority of the
forests in the Southern Savanna burned frequently. These forests depended on the fires to help
maintain the area and return nutrients to the soil. In the mid–1800s, ... Show more content on

Geologists have said that the deep granites are the "roots" of the mountains that were once here
more than two billion years ago (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The sandstones and
limestones, that the mound is composed of, was originally deposited on top of the granite as the sea
bottom of the sea that once covered a major part southern Wisconsin (Belmont Mound State Park
Geology). Since Belmond Mound is in the Driftless area, the erosion patterns that carved
southwestern Wisconsin are what created the mound. Over the 400 million year erosion cycle,
streams removed the sandstone limestone, and dolomite from the southern part of Wisconsin
(Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The remains of these minerals in this region exist only as
tiny remnants on the tops of the Blue, Platte, Belmont and Sinsinawa mounds. If these mounds were
not capped by the Niagara dolomite in the area, they would have been cut down to the level of the
lands surrounding them (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The Belmont Mound is an example
of the southern mesic and dry–mesic forests in Wisconsin. The east central part of the woods is more
mesic with sugar maple being the dominant species while larger red oak, basswood, and white ash
dominate the remainder, with some black walnut mixed in (Belmont Mound Woods No. 167). The
areas of the mound that were the focus of the study were the Southern (day one) and Eastern (day

Maxim In The Wagon Mound
1. The main purpose of the maxim is to avoid injustice to the plaintiff as otherwise the plaintiff
would be required to prove the details of the cause of the accident, which he may not know. As
stated by NH Chan JCA in Teoh Guat Looi v Ng Hong Guan, res ipsa loquitur was in essence no
more than a common sense approach to the effect of the evidence in certain circumstances. It means
that a plaintiff prima facie establishes negligence where it is not possible for him to prove precisely
how the accident happened, but on the evidence as it stands, he manages to show that the accident
could not have happened without the negligence on the part of the defendant.
One important requirement is that the damage or injury which has occurred must give rise to the
presumption that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No. Because before The Wagon Mound, the court was in favour of the direct consequence test which
can be seen in Re Polemis and Furness, Withy & Co Ltd. However, the test rests on the 'fault'
principle rather than 'compensation', whereby once a person is established to have committed a tort,
he has to bear all the losses that arises as a consequence thereof. Consequently, the court uses the
reasonable foresight test in The Wagon Mound, as the Privy Council ruled that Re Polemis should
not be considered good law.
4. The Wagon Mound is the accepted test in Malaysia, approved in the case of Government of
Malaysia v Jumat bin Mahmud & Ors.
5. In Bolton v Stone, the HOL held that the distance between the place where the ball was hit to the
edge of the field which was surrounded by a seven foot wall made injury to the plaintiff rather
remote. A person must only take reasonable steps against risks that may be materialise. Thus the
cricket club was held not liable for allowing cricket to be played without having taken extra
precautions, such as increasing the height of the fence. On the facts, the freak kick has hardly ever

Land Art History
When it emerged in the sixties among the crush of several other art movements (Pop Art,
Minimalism, among others) Land Art came to be an anti–gallery artistic offshoot that straddled the
domain between architecture and sculpture. It had no manifestos nor schools nor leaders and it was
not quite a movement; the artists who were involved with it were also involved in other types of
arts. Land art was labelled as modern 'sculpture' but its versatility and introduction of new concepts
and visual materials made it difficult to ascribe it to one field or term. Later on, the term "Earth
Works," coined by Robert Smithson came to use but Earth Works only refers to works that use earth

Smithson's work Broken Circle & Spiral Hill is two different works situated near each other. It is
actually not in America but was commissioned for an exhibition in the Netherlands near Emmen.
Spiral Hill is an earth mound that coils clockwise unto itself, like a sleeping snake. When it was
completed it was just shaped earth but in current day it is covered in green grass. Situated nearby on
the edge of the shore and into the water is the Broken Circle; its site was actually a functioning sand
and gravel quarry which was filled with green water. Smithson played with the negative and positive
space in such a way that the broken circle whose alternating arms are shaped with white and yellow
sand, recalls the Chinese Yin Yang symbol. In the middle of the positive space half circle sits a
boulder and this is yet again another allusion to monumental works of the past, this one
appropriately native to Dutch lands. "Yet the center boulder in fact significantly expands the
associative levels of this work because it offers a direct tie to prehistory. . . . In the Bronze Age they

Moundbuilders Myths
The Myth of the Moundbuilders is a myth accepted by American settlers from Europe, in North
America into the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. America was being populated
and the new colonizers began to notice many artificial earthworks all around the continent. Circular,
straight and mound statues were built and uncovered when the new farmers started to clean around
the trees in the forest. The new habitants didn't want to accept that the mounds were constructed by
Native American people. They were unsettling and some started to believe in a vanished race of
these moundbuilders (Feder 5). It was believed that the moundbuilders were a race of admirable
people. Some archaeologists even stated that they found bones of tall people, so they couldn't be
Native Americans. There were five arguments that people used to back up the idea that Native
Americans couldn't have made the mounds. The first was that Indians were too uncivilized to have
made the mounds and created everything in stone, metal and clay. The second was that mounds and
related objects were more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He got data about the Moundbuilders and debunked all five arguments. The first argument was false
because descriptions written by European pioneers said that Native Americans were an educated
population that produced their own crops. They didn't seem primitive. The second argument wasn't
true because Indians got to the New World around 12,000 years ago and the mounds are all younger.
Third, there were no real engraved tablets in the tombs. They were all validated to be false. The
fourth was fake because the construction of mounds were mentioned and how the Indians made
them by hand so they were likely strong. Finally, the last argument is fake because there's no
evidence that the architectural skills that would be needed to make the goods couldn't have been
collected by the Native Americans (Feder

The Importance Of Cahokia Mounds
Cahokia Mounds, located near St. Louis, Missouri is the site of a thriving city that was inhabited
centuries before Columbus's arrival on the continent. The ruins, designated by UNESCO as a world
heritage site in 1982, are preserved and protected to visitors can learn about how pre–Columbian
people lived in North America. Cahokia is one of more than 900 world heritage sites. Funding these
properties cost a small fortune and some people think it isn't worth it. However, I believe that it's
essential to protect sites such as Cahokia Mounds so they won't last forever.
When we study old cultures we learn how people adapt to their environment and cope with natural
disasters. We learn how patterns of immigration affect languages and why civilizations thrive or die
out. Studying the remints of culture, help us understand how people lived long ago, and helps us
understand our own civilization. However, not all of the world heritage sites are ancient ruins; also
included are Australia's modern Sydney Opera House, the Tower of London, in England, The Statue
of Liberty, in New York Harbor, and other recognizable structures. These are all impressive places
of outstanding value to people around the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The simple answer is that all structures need maintenance. They fall apart otherwise. Forces such as
earthquakes, floods, and windstorms, threaten heritage properties, so does war and poverty. People
can't always afford to protect the historic buildings near them which is why UNESCO helps.
Imagine if the great places of the world such as famous cathedrals, temples, palaces, castles, caves
with prehistoric paintings, and statues, were destroyed. They are important to everyone in the world,

The Watson Brake Mound Complex, located in Louisiana, has been dated to 5400 years ago. This
mound building tradition in the reaches far back into the Archaic. At Watson Brake, there is no
evidence of cultivation, no evidence of long distance trade, yet here sits the oldest mound structure
of a more hunter–gather type of society with no influence of the Mesoamerican sphere, (Pringle,1).
Another site lies in Poverty Point, Louisiana, about 3500 years old, a record of 800 years of mound
building occurring in the Late Archaic. There is little artefactual evidence of material goods such as
pottery, and cultivation tools that lead to an agricultural society with the exception of unique clay
balls thought to be used for cooking are found here, which show no impact made by Mesoamerica,
(Ortmann, 675).
In discussions of mound building in the region, the Adena and Hopewell cultures of the Woodland
period, starting around 1000 BCE, cannot be forgotten. Preceding the Mississippian culture, these
groups have set a foundation that the Mississippian culture could have easily followed. Their earthen
works stretch all the way to Crystal River, Florida, (Kemp, vii) , are seen in the Appalachian
Mountains, and most notably along the Ohio Valley, (Bernardini,331). All these sites hold the
possibility of influence on the Mississippian mound

Flower Mound Home: A Case Study
Though winter tends to be a slow season for real estate, Flower Mound homes for sale during the
colder, wetter months may actually sell faster and closer to the listed price. According to U.S. News
and World Report, that is because fewer homes are on the market, so buyers have fewer choices.
Also, since spring and summer are traditionally the times sellers put their houses up for sale and
buyers go looking, you know that winter buyers are more serious. They are looking for a new home
"out of season" because of a need, such as a corporate relocation, or maybe they need to be out of
their current home by the end of the year. Whatever the reason, buying and selling homes in the
winter is more doable than most people think.

The City of Mounds View, located in the northwest corner of Ramsey County, Minnesota, contains a
residential population of over 12,000 and over 150 businesses. The city is situated at the connection
of Interstate 35W and State Hwy 10, and is conveniently ten miles from Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Mounds View is renowned for its large, wooded residential lots and wide housing variations. The
city has a total area of 4.12 square miles, of which 4.03 square miles is land and 0.09 square miles is
water.
Mounds View got its name from the mounds or small hills that once existed, but were removed
during World War II when the land became used for an arsenal location. The mounds were mostly
littering the northwest corner of the township, and were tall enough to be seen from almost
anywhere in the area. The Township of Mounds View was established the same day that Minnesota
became a state, 1858. With a substantial population, and neighbored by Blaine, Arden Hills, New
Brighton, and Spring Lake Park, Mounds View is fully established. This city is a great location in
which to live, as it is large enough to offer everyday amenities, but small enough to contain calm
residential neighborhoods. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Cahokia Is The Most Influential Cities
Cahokia is arguably one of the most influential cities in its time. Although there is little known about
Cahokia, aspects of their culture (like games, artifacts, and religious aspects) can be found
throughout the Americas. If so much of the area had not been bulldozed before being excavated, we
may have known more about the area. Cahokia had such an impact during its time, traces of
Cahokia can be found in other communities such as the Osage, Pawnee, and many more.
1. Cahokia made its huge mark in history around 1050 BCE, when they relocated the city and began
growing rapidly. Due to advancements in agriculture and the production of their major crop, maize,

2. Going into the heart of this amazing city could almost be overwhelming to a visitor. The Great
Plaza was the largest public gathering area ever seen in this area. There would have been people and
houses covering miles of area. One of the more disturbing things a visitor might see while in
Cahokia is the human sacrifice. Although to some this is barbaric, many different cultures all over
the world conducted these type of rituals. In one burial site, bodies of pregnant women, mothers, and
children of one family were found. Cahokians had a matrilineal culture (power passed down through
the women's male relatives, which is why it is believed that this burial site was used as a political
massacre of a competitor to the elite family in the area. There is also evidence to show that the
Cahokians had a sense of astronomy and a way of telling time, which was brought on by the
supernova that occurred right before the boom. A visitor may have been able to see the American
Woodhenge that displayed this knowledge.
3. During the 19th and 20th century, archeologists were still trying to find more information about
Cahokia and its people before it was all demolished for the growing city of St. Louis. During this
time, many had flawed and misinformed ideas about the area. A very prominent archeologist, James
Griffin, believed that few inhabitants actually live in this area and they only stayed for short periods
of times. Gh6This

Woodland Periods in North America
North America was a land of quite diversities from the east to the south. One of the early periods
was the Eastern Woodland period (800–200 BCE) which led to the mound emergence and when the
Middle Woodland period (c. 200 BCE– AD 400) started, the mounds became more significant for
ritual and spiritual meaning widespread (Scarre 681: 2013). Adena and the Middle Woodland
societies traded throughout the land such as the southern Appalachians and the Great Lakes. They
would trade artifacts like marine shells, whelks, and pipestones (ibid 682). Most of the Middle
Woodland artifacts were actually found in Ohio though it was evident that people would travel long–
distances to different destinations. During the Late Woodland period (AD 400–1000), mounds were
coming to an end in some areas as well as long–distance trades. Population didn't cease to grow and
stretched through the Midwest and Southwest. The villages that separated into owning more land
where it was farther from river access started to cultivate native plants but they only lasted a few
years (ibid 684). When the trading system of non–local materials started to die, weapons began to
emerge such as arrowheads, bows and arrows for hunting. Tension between villages rose which then
led to fighting and death which then also led to the formation of militarized groups by the end of the
first millennium (ibid 686). Chiefdoms also became a part of life around AD 1000 mainly due to
people seeking help from strong leaders in

The Great Serpent Bound Analysis
"Civilizations develop when the environment of a region can support a large and productive
population" (Sayre 8). Even though civilizations do not last forever, there are elements within it that
share their culture with the world making them an everlasting memory and something to strive
towards. The belief system and social structure of a culture is known through the images and written
language that they leave behind (Sayre 11). The Great Serpent Mound is an art piece created by the
Hopewell that skillfully encompasses their culture.
To begin, the Great Serpent Mound reflects the Hopewell's belief system by depicting how they
connected with the spiritual world. How a culture views the spiritual world affects their belief

Just as belief system is tied to the spiritual world, social structure is tied to the material world. The
way in which a culture interacts with the material world affects the culture's social structure by
causing changes that stem from involvement with other cultures or civilizations. For example, the
burials showed that the Woodlands area of trade was vast, spanning from the Great Lakes, Gulf
Coast, Florida, and the Appalachian Mountains (Sayre 25). Whenever cultures become involved in
trade, their original culture is altered from what it originally was because it has been influenced by
new ideas and materialistic objects. "The Hopewell culture [was] in southern Ohio" causing it to
venture away from the rest of the Woodlands peoples culture. Even though they were the same
civilization, there culture was much less the same (Sayre 25). The Great Serpent Mound, built by the

the project is to use applied archaeology to understand Serpent Mound through oral histories of the
descendant community, the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma, and traditional archaeological methods,
creating an updated narrative about Serpent Mound that can be accessed by the public.
Archaeological methods utilized will be done with the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma as to show
them how archaeology explains Serpent Mound's construction. This project accepts that Serpent
Mound was constructed ~2,300 years ago by Adena people, and will use this narrative when talking
about the site from an archaeological perspective.
The final product of this project will be a revamped Serpent Mound museum and ... Show more

The website will also include virtual tours of Serpent Mound and the museum displays. The oral
histories of the descendant communities will be embedded via audio and also displayed through text
on the website.
Additionally, the information of a revamped site museum and website will be sent out to
surrounding school systems and community members. It is imperative for students to learn and
claim an identity of a site steward by engaging and familiarizing with the site. Additionally, the
informational flyers will contain all the information needed to set up field trips and visits to Serpent
Mound.
Overall, the voice and knowledge of descendant communities and the archaeological understanding
of Serpent Mound will be easily accessed by all ages through in–person or virtual field trip. The
products express Serpent Mound's significance to the public and allows for more knowledge of the
site and site protection. Increased preservation of the site allows future populations to visit and study
the mound, and for the Eastern Shawnee people to continue to have cultural ties to the

The Treatment Of The Breast Mound
Introduction
The breast mound is located between the 2nd and 6th ribs on top of the pectoralis major muscle and
begins at the lateral edge of the sternum. Exteriorly, the breast is covered by a layer of skin that has
a protruding structure in the center called a nipple. The nipple has several sebaceous glands and is
bordered by a darkened circle called the areola. Interiorly, the breast is made up of mammary glands
which are present in both males and female breasts, but women have the ability to produce milk
while men do not. The mammary glands are made up of lobes ranging in number from 15–25. These
lobes are made up of lobules that contain glandular alveoli which produces milk in females. Within
the lobes is a duct called the lactiferous duct that collects the milk produced by the lobules and
carries it to an opening in the nipple. All of these structures that make up the mammary glands are
surrounded completely by a layer of superficial fascia. Finally, the breast is supplied with blood by
the superior thoracic, acromiothoracic, and subscapular arteries and contain about 20–30 lymph
nodes. (textbook)
Pathophysiology
The most common types of cancer are ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and
invasive lobar carcinoma. Ductal carcinoma in situ occurs when the cancer cells are only seen in the
epithelial cells that surround the lactiferous ducts. Invasive ductal carcinoma occurs when the
cancerous cells enter the breast ducts and the fatty tissue that

Summary Of A Mound At Dainchu
A mound at Dainzú provides evidence of the inhabitants of the site engaging in a ball game. The
slabs that were found in the mound are the most important findings since they each have figures
engraved on them. The figures that are depicted contain humans or half human and half man images.
There are three different groups of figures. The figures have their hands protected by gloves and use
knee pads to cover their legs as well. Each figure also holds a small ball only in their right hand.
This article fits into Mesoamerica because it gives an insight into a different ball game that is not
from the Classic period. It also can see that ball games did not necessarily need a special court to
play it in. It can show a correlation between cultures.

Cahokia Bounds
Recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a World
Heritage Site, Cahokia Mounds is located in the current day city of Collinsville, Illinois. Near the
Mississippi River, this pre–history site is made of mounds scattered around an area of about Three
and a half square miles of land. The park may be large, but the actual city of Cahokia in pre–history
spread much further than what the park is recognized as today. Cahokia is recognized by historians
as part of the Mississippian culture which groups them with other native civilizations that lived
along the Mississippi River who shared architectural styles (like the mounds fount in Cahokia) as
well as other attributes like maize based economics and tools ... Show more content on

When I visited again I gained much more fascination from the site. The area of Collinsville that the
site lies in has not much more than a few fast food restaurants and some gas stations. I first arrived
at Monk's Mound and was amazed by the sheer size of the man–made structure. I assumed the
mound had eroded over knowing that the mound was so old which would make it even taller during
the time it was erected. When I climbed to the top, I could see the metropolitan area of St. Louis
Missouri. Being on top of the mound gave the feeling of governing a civilization. I could see many
of the other mounds and the people walking to and from the parking lot to make the same journey
that I did to be on top of Monk's Mound. I expected the area surrounding the site to look better than
it did. As the mock chief that I was for fifteen minutes, I did not know how to feel about an
automotive repair shop at the base of my mound. This simply shows how close the local community
today has come to live hand in hand with a World Heritage

Cahokia Mounds
Cahokia, named by archaeologists, is the largest Mississippian settlement across the United States; it
is located just south of the Lawrenz Gun Club Site (Fig. 7). When Cahokia was an active and
thriving city, it was believed that Cahokia spanned 16 Km2 and encompassed over 120 man made
mounds that all served different functionalities (CahokiaMounds 2015). According to anthropologist
Timothy Pauketat (2009), "Cahokia is an ancient city along the Mississippi River, located opposite
of modern–day St. Louis, Missouri and was as large in its prime as New York and Philadelphia
before the mid–1700s, a home to ten–thousand indigenous peoples." The land was dominated by the
presence of human–constructed mounds, which some archaeologists have speculated ... Show more

The largess of Monk's Mound showed that Cahokia was powerful and consisted of a lot of
inhabitants, which most likely, was foreboding to enemies. Monk's mound is speculated to have
been used for ritual; structures could have been built on the flat terraces that could have served as
places of worship or sacrifce. This mound could have also been used for the powerful leaders in the
society, a place for them to be seen by society at all times, be a constant presence in people's lives.
However, as Glenn Hodges (2011) states, " we do not know if Cahokia had a single leader, we don't
even know what this place was called, the name Cahokia is borrowed from a tribe that lived nearby
in the 1600s, or do we know what the people who lived here called themselves." Overall, the
knowledge and the data collected at Monk's Mound are meager, and do not provide much insight
into the largest human–made structure of the Mississippian

Flower Mound Lacrosse
All my life, my parents have taught me to express emotion, hard work, and perseverance through
lacrosse. While playing has its own downfalls, such as injuries and time consumption, the game
builds character for its players. Playing sports through my years of maturing has taught me
leadership, control of emotions, and the concept that success comes from hard work. Through
middle school and high school, I participated in the association of Flower Mound Lacrosse.
Lacrosse was not popular in Texas, so everyone was a beginner; that included myself. I subdued
countless hours on the field, ensuring success for many years to come. Though I quickly dubbed
myself an expert at the sport, there was much turmoil associated with it. This included, but was not
limited to, a sprained meniscus, numerous concussions, and an abundance of cuts and bruises. Many
times I did not want to shake off the pain. I wanted to walk off the field and never look back. I did
not realize how much of an impact little injuries would have to my competitive drive. These
incidents not only affected me physically, I strove to plow through the pain and mount the summit.

after, tears. But, one of the most notable attributes I attained happened to be the ability to mask my
morose emotions and persevere. When all I wanted to do was fall to my knees in defeat, acceptance
overcame. I would end the game with my head held high, telling myself, "We will get them next
time". Showing that I felt defeated would only fuel the other team's passion to see that look the next
time we played. While losing hurt my team's record, it also brought us closer together. We shook off

The Demise of Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
Located in present day Collinsville, Illinois is Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, which was once
home to the largest city north of Mexico from 700 to 1400 A.D. Settled by the Mississippian people,
today their decline remains a mystery. First visited in 1811 by traveler Henry Brackenridge and
considered the "discoverer of Cahokia" only in the sense that he wrote several papers and articles
about the findings to the public's attention. After walking around the mounds, Brackenridge
described that the locations of the last inhabitants were clearly visible to him, as were fragments of
their tools and utensils. Many extensive archeological excavations and several case study theories
have come about through the years as to why this magnificent ancient metropolis faced such demise.
Many theories viable or not have come about through the years about the fall of the Cahokians,
climate change, a political falling out, a massive flood or a fire and some erroneous suggestions
involving the cosmos. Many of these theories really do not hold a torch to the climate change or
societal fall. A massive fire, a disastrous flood, although more evidence of remains would have be
revealed to be appropriate. Overcrowding and depletion of resources can hold up to the evidence
and reigns true in common sense. I will bring up these factors of cause for the demise, but I will
explore and focus mainly on the climate changes in this American Bottom region as the prime factor
of the Cahokian

What Is Dynamic Mortuary
When looking at archaeological sites within the Mississippian, there is a wide variety of location
and who were settled there. This is no differ when examining grave sites. Despite similarities, there
will also be dynamic mortuary practices between each society and even between different
settlements in those societies. Examining three contrasting sites burial practices and how
investigators determined ranked statuses by these graves creates a bigger picture of many tragedies
present for researches to use. Each site's elite status indicators not only represented how the dead
were treated and their beliefs but also how the society functioned for the living. Moundville The

Symbolism Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight
Symbolism in Sir Gawain & The Green Knight "Sir Gawain & The Green Knight" is a classic
medieval poem about a chivalrous knight on a journey to the Green Chapel. King Arthur's nephew,
Sir Gawain has been challenged by the Green Knight in a "beheading game," where he has agreed to
exchange a blow in the head towards the Green Knight, to be returned to him the following New
Years in journeying to the Green Chapel. Gawain has to battle whether his knightly virtues are more
important than his own life when faced with different trials her encounters. Everything is not what it
appears to be, knowing symbols is a critical part to understanding the meaning of the poem.
Understanding the symbolism behind the Christian and Green Chapel adds to the overall
understanding of the medieval poem. A general definition of a chapel is "a small building for
Christian worship, typically one attached to an institution or private house". The origin of the word
'chapel' comes from the medieval Latin word 'capella' and the Old French word 'chapele', having the
meaning of "hooded cloak" (Alchin). The meaning behind this comes from a cloak, which belonged
to St Martin, being kept as a holy relic and the name of the room becoming known as the "chapel"
(Alchin). A chapel is seen in Arthur's Castle in Camelot, The Lord's Castle and the Green Chapel. In
the text, specifically the two chapels attached to the Castle's would be more in the realm of a
Christian Chapel. In the Medieval era, a castle would

The Indian Mounds Rock And Mineral Club At Rogers Plaza
1. Attend a Gem & Mineral Show such as the one sponsored by the Indian Mounds Rock and
Mineral Club at Rogers Plaza on April 9–11. Hours are 9:30am–9pm Thursday and Friday, till 7pm
on Sat. Plan at least 1 hour to browse through. Only bring what you can afford to spend (and think
Christmas gifts).
a. How did you apply knowledge you've learned in this geology class while you toured the show?
I used my knowledge from class when I was looking at all the different rocks and minerals. I knew
the difference between the sedimentary, metamorphic and the igneous rocks. The Gem Show was
much more interesting because I knew what I was looking at. It gave the Show a whole new
meaning and a better understanding of how wonderful every rock and mineral really are.
b. Describe at least one new thing about minerals or rocks or fossils you learned from the show.
One of the new things I learned was that many of the rocks and minerals I was looking at come from
either Mexico or Arizona. I learned from the sells lady at the table I was looking at that Arizona is
know as one of the richest rock and mineral zones in the world. I found that to be pretty cool. The
woman also said you will never see anything more beautiful then an Arizona skyline with all the
rocks. I want to go visit Arizona now. ☺
c. What was the most interesting exhibit/activity? Why was it interesting to you? (Please make this

most realistic and advanced portable pitching mound currently available, the RFP mound allows
players to experience a true game simulation. MLB coach Ty Van Burkleo met with attendees at the

Those who did so found the practice mound offers numerous benefits over its competitors.

whenever possible. RFP Mounds help teams achieve this goal," Perry continues.
RFP Mounds are cost effective, provide a more consistent pitching surface and are virtually
maintenance free. Two peoples can easily transport the mound to a new location, depending on the
needs of the team, and the mounds have been designed to MLB specifications. In addition, the
mounds can be set up or torn down quickly.

is meant to be fun. Injuries that are unnecessary may lead a person to leave the game forever, and
this should never happen when an injury can be prevented. The mounds are designed to protect
players while allowing them to get the practice they need," Perry

How Did Native Americans Build The Mounds?
The Indian mounds built of earth are very impressive landmarks and important remains of native
people. There are many reasons why Native Indians build the mounds. One of them was a platform
for villages, and place for seasonal gathering, or political gathering. It was also place to bury the
important members of the local tribal groups (like Boys, Pharr, and Byum). Mounds were also used
as location of major regional trade festivals. There is also theory that the mounds were used as a
conventional temples and location of important religious rituals, or as the houses of important
leaders. All these theories seem to be probably but the purpose of the mounds really depend on the
time, location, and the tribes who created them. In my opinion

Greek Influence On Native American Culture
The Mississippian Culture civilization was quite unique, because the people of this culture built
mounds. These mounds served different purposes, some being used for burial chambers, and others
were built to resemble figures. In these societies, there were many mounds, not just a single one.
Furthermore, these cultures were also invested in trade endeavors, with the Hopewell even engaging
with the Caribbean in trade. Additionally, these societies were involved in fishing, hunting and
agriculture, especially maize agriculture. Also, these societies were skilled in workmanship,
producing artifacts. Some of the skilled workmanship that these groups did were pottery, stonework
and copper–work. Also, in these societies, there were social structures, and some mounds were used
in religious activities, with some serving as the site for temples. Their religion was based upon
things that were seen, such as the sun and the eagle, like many other Native American societies. ...

functioning as burial grounds to the bases of temples and palaces. Other Native American cultures
were not mound–builders, which is a very big difference. Also, the Cahokia people (as mentioned on

Analysis Of The Cahokia Mounds
The image that I first selected was the Cahokia Mounds. The land covered about 2,000 acres and
ranged from 10,000–30,000 people (64). According to the image, the inhabitants live by farming and
they had great architectures. They had a well organized community and it looks to follow a certain
order. Basically, the community was well kept and organized. The image shows a society that is
proper and that everyone in the community has an important part in the community. That each

On October 13th, 2016, a group of fourth grade elementary students took a field trip to Town Creek
Indian Mound in Mount Gilead, North Carolina. Having never been to the North Carolina Historical
Site before, many of the children had a variety of questions to ask. "During what time period did
Native Americans live here?" asked the young girl in the fourth–grade class. Others asked, "What
culture of Native Americans resided here in the past," "What is the purpose of the different mounds
and huts," "What is the black drink," and "Why is the Town Creek Indian Mound important to the
history of the state of North Carolina?" The tour guide replied, "It all started around 800 A.D. in this

Most if not all of the historical information that is provided at Town Creek today for visitors to
witness is connected to the archaeological excavations that were completed of the area during the
middle of the 20th century (NC Weekend). The work for the excavations began in 1937 with Floyd
and Minnie Frutchey, but Floyd never got to see the completion of the excavation (Coe, 3). The
excavations were completed in the year 1987 (Coe, 11). During the excavations, archaeologists
recovered clay pottery, as well as bones from many of the burials that occurred during the time of
residence in Town Creek. The archaeological record discovered through the excavations of Town
Creek are pertinent in understanding the history of the people that lived on the bank of the Little
River before English settlement occurred because very little is known historically about these
people. The history of Town Creek remains somewhat a mystery because all that is known about the
people and the site is solely based off of the excavations that occurred performed during the 20th
century (NC

Moles Mound
The year is 2003, I am eight and for half of a year I have lived with my grandmother and my
brothers. The school year has just ended and summer has begun. "I'm tired of you kids, you boys
have been driving me up the walls and I need a break!" my grandmother said. "You're going to
summer camp!" I had never been camping but that did not stop a smile only a child could have
stretch from ear to ear across my little face. With a mouth lacking in front teeth, I screamed, "Yay!"
My grandmother had signed us up for the annual boys and girls club summer camping trip, meaning
eight weeks of fun under a warm sun at camp Big Silver in the neighboring state, Michigan. I will

Shoes digging deeply into moist earth, I catapulted myself to over the Mound. Cresting it revealed a
gentle slope leading towards the calm Silver Lake below. The sky above was a soft periwinkle blue
and as I looked further west, protracted bands of violet, pink, red and orange clouds claimed the
vista. The hills slope was a dull reflection of the sky and atop the ground our cabins sat comfortably
facing the setting sun. I was to first to my group's cabin and thus got to pick the top bunk of a bed
with a window facing west, towards the sunset. The whole camp was told to put their belongings in
their chest and to make their way to the lake. Tossing my bag on my bed, I ran after the sun with the
other kids. On the beachfront of the lake, a great collection of twigs, sticks and logs had been set up.
In a radiant brilliance, the sun said its last goodbyes and night took its place. The president sang the
Camps motto and sparked the famished bonfire alive, sending a burst of scarlet red flames into the
night and illuminating the solder pines that encircled the beach. Roasted marshmallows and
chocolate bars filled the air with scents carrying the very essence of camping.
My camping experience as a child left an indelible mark on my life it is a day I will never forget. It
was my first introduction to the "countryside" and the simple tranquility it holds over the busy, fast–
paced life of any city. Later on during the eight–week trip, we had been taught how to ride horses,
how to shoot a bow and arrow, swim, kayak, fish, and so much more. While I do not often have the
time to go camping and have yet to do so since Big Silver, the memory is always there to remind me
of an activity I could do that will provide rest during stressful

Essay On North American Myths

  • 1. Essay On North American Myths Myth of the Mound Builders The construction of the great earthworks of North American antiquity were shrouded in mystery as the first European explores who discovered them were astonished. They were not just astonished at the sight of the massive mounds that were of monument proportion, but at the thought of who created these great feats of human ingenuity. Who could construct such monuments in an area of the world that was secluded from the known world for thousands of years? There are many myths surrounding the construction of the mounds of North America, but none are more troubling and perplexing than the idea that Natives of the Americas were incapable of such feats of ingenuity. I will focus on the myths surrounding the builders of the great mounds of North America, and the research that archeology has used to clarify some of these myths in the search for the true nature of the builders. The earliest myths surrounding the construction of the mounds excluded Natives North American and any insight they had about the mounds. The contemporary idea of the 18th century was that an advanced civilization built the mounds that had didn't have any connection with Native North American groups of the Northwest. The civilization that was considered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Trigger 20) Throughout much of the nineteenth century, the image that was portrayed of the American native was skewed to resemble barbarism, and at best the noble savage. This image came from the writings that had an objectified, ahistorical, and normative description on the manners and customs of natives. (Mann 4) The influence that this had on American archaeology lasted throughout the nineteenth century, and the portrayal of natives as "inferior to civilized man" had a lasting effect on land seizures by European settlers. • 3. The Mound Building Peoples Of The Eastern United States Throughout history there have been ebbs and flows identified within all facets of human history, and the Native American mound–builders were no different. The mound–building peoples of the Eastern United States (U.S.) along with the Aztec's, Mayan and the Inca were revolutionary economists, farmers and communal architects. Before the Europeans came in contact with the mound–building tribes in the 1500's, a thriving nation was had developed into an economic powerhouse and maintain its position of power and commerce for a few hundred years. We would be remiss to not preserve the archeological remnants of the Adena, Hopewellian and later the Mississippians. Each of the many built mounds holds unique facts and details to how the nation thrived and developed over several centuries. One of the most influential and progressive cultures in North American history was the mound– building Native American tribes. The most significant aspects of the mound–building peoples was the multitude of mounds built for burials, ceremonial and ritual events, temples and other important buildings, and effigy mounds in the shape of various animals (Colin Calloway, 2012, p. 32). Archeologists classify mound building Indians of the Southeast into three major chronological/cultural divisions: the Archaic, the Woodland, and the Mississippian (United States National Park Service, n.d.). Although Mississippians are known for their mounds; they were also the first fully domesticated farmers cultivating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Enlightened Histori An Article Authored By Jeffrey... Aregai 1 The Enlightened Archaeologist – an article authored by Jeffrey Hantman and Gary Dunham chronicles Thomas Jefferson's investigation of the Indian burial mound located on the South Fork of the Rivanna River in the 18th century. The site excavated by Jefferson, however, is no longer visible, most likely due to dissipation by inevitable natural occurrences (I.E. excessive rainfall, flooding rivers, etc.) or human activity such as farming. The "Father of American Archaeology" correctly predicts the latter in his book, Notes on the State of Virginia, in which he states, mounds "...put under cultivation are much reduced in their height, and spread in width, by the plough, and will probably disappear in time" (1787). Fortunately for Archaeologists of the late 20th century (1988) an Indian burial mound identical to that of the one Jefferson described in his book was uncovered just 14 miles from the South Fork of the Rivanna River. The Rapidan mound – in spite of being reduced to its southern edge, provided archaeologists' Hantman, Dunham, and colleagues a unique, yet waning opportunity to record and excavate the quickly abrading site. What they discovered from their digging surprised them; the content and order within the mound also resembled Thomas Jefferson's descriptive notes. However, what he noted as the random placement of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Archeological excavations have been continuing in Maydos Kilisetepe mound since 2010 which is located in the town of Eceabat on the shores of the Dardanelles. The uncovered special building belongs to second millenium BC provides, information about administrative center function of Maydos Kilisetepe Mound like Troy. Due to its convenient location for land and sea trade, Maydos Kilisetepe mound probably had a role in developing cultural and commercial relations between the Aegean and southeastern Europe. In addition, the heads of scepters was found in same layer and those emphasize the people in the leadership position of the society. There is limited number of structures with decoration and clay wall relief is not seen in Anatolia in that time. However, the closest parallels for the relief–decorated mud–bricks from Maydos–Kilisetepe come from the Late Bronze Age site of Apsalos in Macedonian region of Greece. The work on pottery and small finds of Maydos Kilisetepe Mound has been still ongoing; however, result of preliminary studies demonstrates that Maydos Kilisetepe Mound had close relationship with Northern Greece and Bulgaria during Late Bronze Age. Implementation of clay relief in architecture was detected in 2nd Millenium BC in an area spanning from Northern Greece to Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, also motifs on the reliefs of Late Bronze Age building in Maydos Kilisetepe Mound have similiarity with the decoration on pottery of Wietenberg Culture (Romania). • 9. Myths Of The Mound Builders Myths of the Mound Builders The first time I heard about the Mound Builders, which was in this class, these people seemed like a very primitive group. What was so exciting about having the skill of piling up a bunch of dirt. Then I was able to see some of these mounds and the scale was nothing I had imagined. These mounds were huge and also contained distinct structural shapes. Tombs, houses, and religious structures were constructed in or on top of the mounds. What made the edifices even more amazing was the time period they were built. Constructed all the way back to 3000 B.C., the mounds rivaled the most advanced engineering techniques in the world. An interesting aspect involved with the Mound Builders were the way they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were able to obtain huge assembly of artifacts and precise surveys that are still used to this day. Another major contributor to the understanding of the Mound Builders was Cyrus Thomas. He was an entomologist and botanist that was made the head of the Division of Mound Exploration. Thomas gathered his assistants and set out into the Mississippi Valley to study the earthworks. During this time the mounds were being destroyed by looters and fought to keep the mounds in good condition. Over seven years Thomas was able to survey more than two thousand mounds and collect tens of thousands of artifacts. He then wrote an a work called the "Report on the Mound Explorations of the Bureau of Ethnology." In this report Cyrus was able to explain the diversity and integrity of the Mound Builder culture. The Native Americans were now able to be viewed as people who had a rich past, not one of barbarism as thought before. These were people that deserved respect and gratitude for providing such interesting achievements for mankind. As one can see, the earthworks of the Ohio and Mississippi valley are critical in the understanding the past. They provide great clues about the migration of the Ancient people of this land. It is still not understood how the Western World was settled and under great debate. Any clues that are available should be used and the mounds are a great source. Native ... • 11. Southwest Savanna Environmental Analysis The Southwest Savanna is characterized by the hilltops, rivers and valleys and steep wooded slopes within the area. The average growing season in this part of southern Wisconsin is 153 days, making it the fourth longest growing season of the different landscapes within the state (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2015). Of all the land in this section of Wisconsin, about 3.5% belongs to state, county, or municipal governments; this includes the state parks, natural areas, and wildlife areas. (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2015). In the past, a majority of the forests in the Southern Savanna burned frequently. These forests depended on the fires to help maintain the area and return nutrients to the soil. In the mid–1800s, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Geologists have said that the deep granites are the "roots" of the mountains that were once here more than two billion years ago (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The sandstones and limestones, that the mound is composed of, was originally deposited on top of the granite as the sea bottom of the sea that once covered a major part southern Wisconsin (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). Since Belmond Mound is in the Driftless area, the erosion patterns that carved southwestern Wisconsin are what created the mound. Over the 400 million year erosion cycle, streams removed the sandstone limestone, and dolomite from the southern part of Wisconsin (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The remains of these minerals in this region exist only as tiny remnants on the tops of the Blue, Platte, Belmont and Sinsinawa mounds. If these mounds were not capped by the Niagara dolomite in the area, they would have been cut down to the level of the lands surrounding them (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The Belmont Mound is an example of the southern mesic and dry–mesic forests in Wisconsin. The east central part of the woods is more mesic with sugar maple being the dominant species while larger red oak, basswood, and white ash dominate the remainder, with some black walnut mixed in (Belmont Mound Woods No. 167). • 13. Maxim In The Wagon Mound 1. The main purpose of the maxim is to avoid injustice to the plaintiff as otherwise the plaintiff would be required to prove the details of the cause of the accident, which he may not know. As stated by NH Chan JCA in Teoh Guat Looi v Ng Hong Guan, res ipsa loquitur was in essence no more than a common sense approach to the effect of the evidence in certain circumstances. It means that a plaintiff prima facie establishes negligence where it is not possible for him to prove precisely how the accident happened, but on the evidence as it stands, he manages to show that the accident could not have happened without the negligence on the part of the defendant. One important requirement is that the damage or injury which has occurred must give rise to the presumption that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No. Because before The Wagon Mound, the court was in favour of the direct consequence test which can be seen in Re Polemis and Furness, Withy & Co Ltd. However, the test rests on the 'fault' principle rather than 'compensation', whereby once a person is established to have committed a tort, he has to bear all the losses that arises as a consequence thereof. Consequently, the court uses the reasonable foresight test in The Wagon Mound, as the Privy Council ruled that Re Polemis should not be considered good law. 4. The Wagon Mound is the accepted test in Malaysia, approved in the case of Government of Malaysia v Jumat bin Mahmud & Ors. 5. In Bolton v Stone, the HOL held that the distance between the place where the ball was hit to the edge of the field which was surrounded by a seven foot wall made injury to the plaintiff rather remote. A person must only take reasonable steps against risks that may be materialise. Thus the cricket club was held not liable for allowing cricket to be played without having taken extra precautions, such as increasing the height of the fence. • 15. Land Art History When it emerged in the sixties among the crush of several other art movements (Pop Art, Minimalism, among others) Land Art came to be an anti–gallery artistic offshoot that straddled the domain between architecture and sculpture. It had no manifestos nor schools nor leaders and it was not quite a movement; the artists who were involved with it were also involved in other types of arts. Land art was labelled as modern 'sculpture' but its versatility and introduction of new concepts and visual materials made it difficult to ascribe it to one field or term. Later on, the term "Earth Works," coined by Robert Smithson came to use but Earth Works only refers to works that use earth while Land Art is an all–encompassing umbrella that includes works ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smithson's work Broken Circle & Spiral Hill is two different works situated near each other. It is actually not in America but was commissioned for an exhibition in the Netherlands near Emmen. Spiral Hill is an earth mound that coils clockwise unto itself, like a sleeping snake. When it was completed it was just shaped earth but in current day it is covered in green grass. Situated nearby on the edge of the shore and into the water is the Broken Circle; its site was actually a functioning sand and gravel quarry which was filled with green water. Smithson played with the negative and positive space in such a way that the broken circle whose alternating arms are shaped with white and yellow sand, recalls the Chinese Yin Yang symbol. In the middle of the positive space half circle sits a boulder and this is yet again another allusion to monumental works of the past, this one appropriately native to Dutch lands. "Yet the center boulder in fact significantly expands the associative levels of this work because it offers a direct tie to prehistory. . . . • 17. Moundbuilders Myths The Myth of the Moundbuilders is a myth accepted by American settlers from Europe, in North America into the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. America was being populated and the new colonizers began to notice many artificial earthworks all around the continent. Circular, straight and mound statues were built and uncovered when the new farmers started to clean around the trees in the forest. The new habitants didn't want to accept that the mounds were constructed by Native American people. They were unsettling and some started to believe in a vanished race of these moundbuilders (Feder 5). It was believed that the moundbuilders were a race of admirable people. Some archaeologists even stated that they found bones of tall people, so they couldn't be Native Americans. There were five arguments that people used to back up the idea that Native Americans couldn't have made the mounds. The first was that Indians were too uncivilized to have made the mounds and created everything in stone, metal and clay. The second was that mounds and related objects were more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He got data about the Moundbuilders and debunked all five arguments. The first argument was false because descriptions written by European pioneers said that Native Americans were an educated population that produced their own crops. They didn't seem primitive. The second argument wasn't true because Indians got to the New World around 12,000 years ago and the mounds are all younger. Third, there were no real engraved tablets in the tombs. They were all validated to be false. The fourth was fake because the construction of mounds were mentioned and how the Indians made them by hand so they were likely strong. Finally, the last argument is fake because there's no evidence that the architectural skills that would be needed to make the goods couldn't have been collected by the Native Americans (Feder ... • 19. The Importance Of Cahokia Mounds Cahokia Mounds, located near St. Louis, Missouri is the site of a thriving city that was inhabited centuries before Columbus's arrival on the continent. The ruins, designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1982, are preserved and protected to visitors can learn about how pre–Columbian people lived in North America. Cahokia is one of more than 900 world heritage sites. Funding these properties cost a small fortune and some people think it isn't worth it. However, I believe that it's essential to protect sites such as Cahokia Mounds so they won't last forever. When we study old cultures we learn how people adapt to their environment and cope with natural disasters. We learn how patterns of immigration affect languages and why civilizations thrive or die out. Studying the remints of culture, help us understand how people lived long ago, and helps us understand our own civilization. However, not all of the world heritage sites are ancient ruins; also included are Australia's modern Sydney Opera House, the Tower of London, in England, The Statue of Liberty, in New York Harbor, and other recognizable structures. These are all impressive places of outstanding value to people around the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The simple answer is that all structures need maintenance. They fall apart otherwise. Forces such as earthquakes, floods, and windstorms, threaten heritage properties, so does war and poverty. People can't always afford to protect the historic buildings near them which is why UNESCO helps. Spiro is a compromised site. Much of its integrity is breached by artifact hunters, yet the lone obsidian scraper has a providence to add to the integrity of the find. Obtained in 1935 by J.G. Braecklein at Craig Mound, the artifact is donated to the Smithsonian. Here it sat in the collection. In 2002, Alex W. This mound building tradition in the reaches far back into the Archaic. At Watson Brake, there is no evidence of cultivation, no evidence of long distance trade, yet here sits the oldest mound structure of a more hunter–gather type of society with no influence of the Mesoamerican sphere, (Pringle,1). Another site lies in Poverty Point, Louisiana, about 3500 years old, a record of 800 years of mound building occurring in the Late Archaic. There is little artefactual evidence of material goods such as pottery, and cultivation tools that lead to an agricultural society with the exception of unique clay balls thought to be used for cooking are found here, which show no impact made by Mesoamerica, (Ortmann, 675). In discussions of mound building in the region, the Adena and Hopewell cultures of the Woodland period, starting around 1000 BCE, cannot be forgotten. Preceding the Mississippian culture, these groups have set a foundation that the Mississippian culture could have easily followed. Their earthen works stretch all the way to Crystal River, Florida, (Kemp, vii) , are seen in the Appalachian Mountains, and most notably along the Ohio Valley, (Bernardini,331). • 23. Flower Mound Home: A Case Study Though winter tends to be a slow season for real estate, Flower Mound homes for sale during the colder, wetter months may actually sell faster and closer to the listed price. According to U.S. News and World Report, that is because fewer homes are on the market, so buyers have fewer choices. Also, since spring and summer are traditionally the times sellers put their houses up for sale and buyers go looking, you know that winter buyers are more serious. They are looking for a new home "out of season" because of a need, such as a corporate relocation, or maybe they need to be out of their current home by the end of the year. Whatever the reason, buying and selling homes in the winter is more doable than most people think. The weather plays an important role in home selling and buying. The city has a total area of 4.12 square miles, of which 4.03 square miles is land and 0.09 square miles is water. Mounds View got its name from the mounds or small hills that once existed, but were removed during World War II when the land became used for an arsenal location. The mounds were mostly littering the northwest corner of the township, and were tall enough to be seen from almost anywhere in the area. The Township of Mounds View was established the same day that Minnesota became a state, 1858. With a substantial population, and neighbored by Blaine, Arden Hills, New Brighton, and Spring Lake Park, Mounds View is fully established. • 27. How Cahokia Is The Most Influential Cities Cahokia is arguably one of the most influential cities in its time. Although there is little known about Cahokia, aspects of their culture (like games, artifacts, and religious aspects) can be found throughout the Americas. If so much of the area had not been bulldozed before being excavated, we may have known more about the area. Cahokia had such an impact during its time, traces of Cahokia can be found in other communities such as the Osage, Pawnee, and many more. 1. Cahokia made its huge mark in history around 1050 BCE, when they relocated the city and began growing rapidly. Due to advancements in agriculture and the production of their major crop, maize, Cahokians were able to develop new traits and skills that allowed the city to ... The Great Plaza was the largest public gathering area ever seen in this area. There would have been people and houses covering miles of area. One of the more disturbing things a visitor might see while in Cahokia is the human sacrifice. Although to some this is barbaric, many different cultures all over the world conducted these type of rituals. In one burial site, bodies of pregnant women, mothers, and children of one family were found. Cahokians had a matrilineal culture (power passed down through the women's male relatives, which is why it is believed that this burial site was used as a political massacre of a competitor to the elite family in the area. There is also evidence to show that the Cahokians had a sense of astronomy and a way of telling time, which was brought on by the supernova that occurred right before the boom. A visitor may have been able to see the American Woodhenge that displayed this knowledge. 3. During the 19th and 20th century, archeologists were still trying to find more information about Cahokia and its people before it was all demolished for the growing city of St. Louis. During this time, many had flawed and misinformed ideas about the area. A very prominent archeologist, James Griffin, believed that few inhabitants actually live in this area and they only stayed for short periods of times. Gh6This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Woodland Periods in North America North America was a land of quite diversities from the east to the south. One of the early periods was the Eastern Woodland period (800–200 BCE) which led to the mound emergence and when the Middle Woodland period (c. 200 BCE– AD 400) started, the mounds became more significant for ritual and spiritual meaning widespread (Scarre 681: 2013). Adena and the Middle Woodland societies traded throughout the land such as the southern Appalachians and the Great Lakes. They would trade artifacts like marine shells, whelks, and pipestones (ibid 682). Most of the Middle Woodland artifacts were actually found in Ohio though it was evident that people would travel long– distances to different destinations. During the Late Woodland period (AD 400–1000), mounds were coming to an end in some areas as well as long–distance trades. Population didn't cease to grow and stretched through the Midwest and Southwest. The villages that separated into owning more land where it was farther from river access started to cultivate native plants but they only lasted a few years (ibid 684). When the trading system of non–local materials started to die, weapons began to emerge such as arrowheads, bows and arrows for hunting. Tension between villages rose which then led to fighting and death which then also led to the formation of militarized groups by the end of the first millennium (ibid 686). • 41. The Treatment Of The Breast Mound Introduction The breast mound is located between the 2nd and 6th ribs on top of the pectoralis major muscle and begins at the lateral edge of the sternum. Exteriorly, the breast is covered by a layer of skin that has a protruding structure in the center called a nipple. The nipple has several sebaceous glands and is bordered by a darkened circle called the areola. Interiorly, the breast is made up of mammary glands which are present in both males and female breasts, but women have the ability to produce milk while men do not. The mammary glands are made up of lobes ranging in number from 15–25. These lobes are made up of lobules that contain glandular alveoli which produces milk in females. Within the lobes is a duct called the lactiferous duct that collects the milk produced by the lobules and carries it to an opening in the nipple. All of these structures that make up the mammary glands are surrounded completely by a layer of superficial fascia. Finally, the breast is supplied with blood by the superior thoracic, acromiothoracic, and subscapular arteries and contain about 20–30 lymph nodes. (textbook) Pathophysiology The most common types of cancer are ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and invasive lobar carcinoma. Settled by the Mississippian people, today their decline remains a mystery. First visited in 1811 by traveler Henry Brackenridge and considered the "discoverer of Cahokia" only in the sense that he wrote several papers and articles about the findings to the public's attention. After walking around the mounds, Brackenridge described that the locations of the last inhabitants were clearly visible to him, as were fragments of their tools and utensils. Many extensive archeological excavations and several case study theories have come about through the years as to why this magnificent ancient metropolis faced such demise. Many theories viable or not have come about through the years about the fall of the Cahokians, climate change, a political falling out, a massive flood or a fire and some erroneous suggestions involving the cosmos. Symbolism Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Symbolism in Sir Gawain & The Green Knight "Sir Gawain & The Green Knight" is a classic medieval poem about a chivalrous knight on a journey to the Green Chapel. King Arthur's nephew, Sir Gawain has been challenged by the Green Knight in a "beheading game," where he has agreed to exchange a blow in the head towards the Green Knight, to be returned to him the following New Years in journeying to the Green Chapel. Gawain has to battle whether his knightly virtues are more important than his own life when faced with different trials her encounters. Everything is not what it appears to be, knowing symbols is a critical part to understanding the meaning of the poem. Understanding the symbolism behind the Christian and Green Chapel adds to the overall understanding of the medieval poem. A general definition of a chapel is "a small building for Christian worship, typically one attached to an institution or private house". The origin of the word 'chapel' comes from the medieval Latin word 'capella' and the Old French word 'chapele', having the meaning of "hooded cloak" (Alchin). The meaning behind this comes from a cloak, which belonged to St Martin, being kept as a holy relic and the name of the room becoming known as the "chapel" (Alchin). • 67. Valencia Merble Pilgrim: Eating A Peter Paul Mound Bar "Billy Pilgrim got onto a chartered airplane in Ilium twenty–five years after that. He knew it was going to crash, but he didn't want to make a fool of himself by saying so"(Vonnegut 154). "the machine named Valencia Merble Pilgrim was eating a Peter Paul Mound Bar" (Vonnegut 154). This quote was very important and it was interesting to see that it was the beginning of the chapter. The irony of beginning a new chapter with a plane crash that will kill twenty eight people shows how important of a transition billy has made. Before this plane ride Billy never cared about looking like a fool for example the jacket he wore and him telling the little kid about the Tralfamadorians. Billy has changed he is beginning to care more about what people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Greek Influence On Native American Culture The Mississippian Culture civilization was quite unique, because the people of this culture built mounds. These mounds served different purposes, some being used for burial chambers, and others were built to resemble figures. In these societies, there were many mounds, not just a single one. Furthermore, these cultures were also invested in trade endeavors, with the Hopewell even engaging with the Caribbean in trade. Additionally, these societies were involved in fishing, hunting and agriculture, especially maize agriculture. Also, these societies were skilled in workmanship, producing artifacts. Some of the skilled workmanship that these groups did were pottery, stonework and copper–work. Also, in these societies, there were social structures, and some mounds were used in religious activities, with some serving as the site for temples. Their religion was based upon things that were seen, such as the sun and the eagle, like many other Native American societies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, for the mounds in these cities, wood and dirt was used. Unfortunately, the wood from the surrounding area was sometimes overused, which led to the eventual flooding of Cahokia. They built the mounds for many different reasons, as they served many different purposes, from functioning as burial grounds to the bases of temples and palaces. Other Native American cultures were not mound–builders, which is a very big difference. Also, the Cahokia people (as mentioned on the video) did not live in tepees, as typically thought that Native Americans did. The people of Moundville lived in "small houses composed of pole and thatch (according to the Moundville ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Analysis Of The Cahokia Mounds The image that I first selected was the Cahokia Mounds. The land covered about 2,000 acres and ranged from 10,000–30,000 people (64). According to the image, the inhabitants live by farming and they had great architectures. They had a well organized community and it looks to follow a certain order. Basically, the community was well kept and organized. The image shows a society that is proper and that everyone in the community has an important part in the community. That each individual has a certain part in the community that keeps it rolling. Overall, the inhabitants had a structure of their society that showed how organized and well put the community was. • 75. Town Creek Indian Mound Analysis On October 13th, 2016, a group of fourth grade elementary students took a field trip to Town Creek Indian Mound in Mount Gilead, North Carolina. Having never been to the North Carolina Historical Site before, many of the children had a variety of questions to ask. "During what time period did Native Americans live here?" asked the young girl in the fourth–grade class. Others asked, "What culture of Native Americans resided here in the past," "What is the purpose of the different mounds and huts," "What is the black drink," and "Why is the Town Creek Indian Mound important to the history of the state of North Carolina?" The tour guide replied, "It all started around 800 A.D. in this approximate area... (Cunningham, 1)" In the 11th century ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most if not all of the historical information that is provided at Town Creek today for visitors to witness is connected to the archaeological excavations that were completed of the area during the middle of the 20th century (NC Weekend). The work for the excavations began in 1937 with Floyd and Minnie Frutchey, but Floyd never got to see the completion of the excavation (Coe, 3). The excavations were completed in the year 1987 (Coe, 11). During the excavations, archaeologists recovered clay pottery, as well as bones from many of the burials that occurred during the time of residence in Town Creek. The archaeological record discovered through the excavations of Town Creek are pertinent in understanding the history of the people that lived on the bank of the Little River before English settlement occurred because very little is known historically about these people. The history of Town Creek remains somewhat a mystery because all that is known about the people and the site is solely based off of the excavations that occurred performed during the 20th century (NC ... • 77. Moles Mound The year is 2003, I am eight and for half of a year I have lived with my grandmother and my brothers. The school year has just ended and summer has begun. "I'm tired of you kids, you boys have been driving me up the walls and I need a break!" my grandmother said. "You're going to summer camp!" I had never been camping but that did not stop a smile only a child could have stretch from ear to ear across my little face. With a mouth lacking in front teeth, I screamed, "Yay!" My grandmother had signed us up for the annual boys and girls club summer camping trip, meaning eight weeks of fun under a warm sun at camp Big Silver in the neighboring state, Michigan. I will never forget my first day of summer camp. Before I knew it, I was sitting snuggly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shoes digging deeply into moist earth, I catapulted myself to over the Mound. Cresting it revealed a gentle slope leading towards the calm Silver Lake below. The sky above was a soft periwinkle blue and as I looked further west, protracted bands of violet, pink, red and orange clouds claimed the vista. The hills slope was a dull reflection of the sky and atop the ground our cabins sat comfortably facing the setting sun. I was to first to my group's cabin and thus got to pick the top bunk of a bed with a window facing west, towards the sunset. The whole camp was told to put their belongings in their chest and to make their way to the lake. Tossing my bag on my bed, I ran after the sun with the other kids. On the beachfront of the lake, a great collection of twigs, sticks and logs had been set up. In a radiant brilliance, the sun said its last goodbyes and night took its place. The president sang the Camps motto and sparked the famished bonfire alive, sending a burst of scarlet red flames into the night and illuminating the solder pines that encircled the beach. Roasted marshmallows and chocolate bars filled the air with scents carrying the very essence of camping. My camping experience as a child left an indelible mark on my life it is a day I will never forget. It was my first introduction to the "countryside" and the simple tranquility it holds over the busy, fast– paced life of any city. Later on during the eight–week trip, we had been taught how to ride horses, how to shoot a bow and arrow, swim, kayak, fish, and so much more. While I do not often have the time to go camping and have yet to do so since Big Silver, the memory is always there to remind me of an activity I could do that will provide rest during stressful ...
