Sherlock Holmes By Arthur Conan Doyle
To begin with, the first indispensable step in the research should be devoted to the Scottish writer sir
Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the famous Victorian detective Sherlock Holmes. The fact that
Conan Doyle was not the first detective writer is definitely worth mentioning. The founder of the
detective genre is considered to be the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story of detective
fiction oficially started in 1841 when Poe published his "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (Kopley
31). This famous story established literary conventions which are used in detective fiction till the
present time. The main character of Poe`s novels, the Paris detective C. August Dupin, has become a
prototype of the detective image which does not stale even nowadays, and had a big influence on
Sherlock Holmes`s image (Schwartz 15).
Arthur Conan Doyle devoted his famous quotation to Poe: "Each [of Poe's detective stories] is a root
from which a whole literature has developed... Where was the detective story until Poe breathed the
breath of life into it?" (Dawn 323). The reference to Dupin`s character can be even found in the first
story of Sherlock book series A Study in Scarlet (1887) where Holmes mensions Dupin when
Watson tries to compare the two detectives: "No doubt you think you are complimenting me... In my
opinion, Dupin was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
was the father of the detective tale, and covered its limits so completely that I fail to see how his
followers can find any fresh ground which they can confidently call their own" (Morledge 38). From
the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes it was clear that Conan Doyle is on the right track of
creating his character, gaining a tremendous level of success after the first story

Dillan Braziel Mrs.Loomis 8th The Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle was a highly successful author from Scotland. Over 125 years after his creation
of Sherlock Holmes the series still remains the most popular fictional detective in history today.
Doyle is best known for the 60 stories he wrote about Sherlock Holmes! His bodies of work include
200 novels, short stories, poems, and historical books! His stories were influenced by people who
felt like they were in that position at that time of life and had experiences with people with major
addictions. Arthur Conan Doyle was brought to this world on may 22, 1859. He was born in
Edinburgh, Scotland by rich parents, Charles Altamont, Doyle father, and Mary Foley his mother,
were a strict catholic family. He was inspired by his mother who was very creative. He even said
once that he heard strong meaningful stories from her at such a young age that he had a hard time
separating his stories from reality. His father was an alcoholic his whole life and that 's where he
received most of his experience with addiction to certain things. Doyle was sent to a boarding
school when he was nine years of age. Boarding school was a horrible time for him because he was
extremely bullied and punished by authority, often for no reason. Doyle's only moments of
happiness was when he wrote to his mother, a regular habit that lasted the rest of her life, and

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was certainly much more than his most famous creation, and away from his
most famous creation, his life was full of interesting and strange facts and events.
NAME
It is common to see Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's name shortened to just Conan Doyle, Conan though,
was not part of his surname, and was in fact just one of his two middle names. Conan Doyle's full
name was Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle. It was only when he started his professional career that

Specifically, Conan Doyle was an eye specialist, having been an undergraduate at Edinburgh
University from 1876 to 1881.
After completing his time at Edinburgh University, Conan Doyle undertook work as a ship's doctor,
ran doctor's practices in Birmingham, Plymouth, Portsmouth and London, and he even went to
Vienna briefly to continue his studying.
The south coast of England would often prove to be home to Conan Doyle, and for a long period he
lived in Hindhead; and when he died of heart–attack, aged 71, in 1930, Conan Doyle was buried in
Minstead.
SPORT
The practices run by Conan Doyle were not particularly successful, and so Conan Doyle would
often find that he had plenty of spare time to indulge in other interests, including writing and playing
sport.
It is often said that Conan Doyle is one of the world's most famous goalkeepers; Conan Doyle
though played for the amateur side Portsmouth Association Football Club, and not the more famous
Portsmouth FC as is often said as fact. Portsmouth FC was founded in 1898, whilst Portsmouth AFC
operated from 1884 to 1896.
In 1893, Conan Doyle would briefly move to Switzerland, staying in Davos. Here he started taking
part in the brand new winter sport of skiing, being one of the very first from Britain to try it. Conan

Oh, Play that Thing and The Dead Republic by Roddy Doyle
In Roddy Doyle's series Oh, Play That Thing and The Dead Republic the world is shown to the
readers through the eyes of a wise fool, Henry Smart. The series includes a wide variety of magical
realism, and how Henry continues to fight social norms to get what he wants. The idea of society vs.
man and individualism takes a toll on Henry's pride by forcing him to jump from job to job or from
flat to flat that ultimately puts him in disarray. Each book's analysis should be in its own category,
but they have many identical ideas, themes, and characters that bring them together.
The elements of magical realism in a historical series, at first sight seem quite suitable. It is
generally agreed that the picaresque, with its humorous ideas on the social outcasts trying to endure
an aggressive environment, is a sensible move against the romanticize tendency of the plot. Magic
realism, with its limited interruption of mimetic rules, lends itself to a number of uses, postcolonial
being one of them. It introduces elements of grotesque moments that allow the readers to sense the
satirical potentials and it brings in metaphorical aspects to the plate. The aspects of magical realism
seem to play with the readers mind. The convention of picaresque combined with magical realism
builds a wider grotesque vision for the reader. It is not only the space but also the characters, the
main protagonist among them are shaped according to the defamilliarising rules of this magical
picaresque world.

Jaggery knew that Zachariah is hiding in the prison cell. Charlotte enters, knowing already that
Jaggery staged the attack on Mr. Hollybrass to make Mr. Doyle guilty, and Jaggery gives a speech to
her about how order was disrupted. Jaggery admits that he killed Mr. Hollybrass, since Samuel was
threatening Jaggery. The captain gives her three options. The first option is that he will give Mr.
Doyle the keys to the safe to get the muskets and kill Captain Jaggery. This will make her family
shamed and reputation The second option is to put her old clothes on, ask for forgiveness, and
everything will be in proper order. The third option is that she can be hanged. Charlotte rejects all

Similarities Between Sherlock Holmes And John Doyle
"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the
truth" claimed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These words would come to influence some of the greatest
and most renowned characters of any and all detective esque literature: Sherlock Holmes and John
Watson. Doyle's work Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles became incredibly popular
and was eventually recognized as an American classic. Through his novel, Doyle portrays a fantastic
use of the elements of fiction and takes advantage of them in order to provide depth and
understanding. The novel first takes place in the 1880's, in London, at Sherlocks famous office on
221B Baker Street. This is only prominent in the beginning because the setting changes ... Show

A major characteristic of Watson is loyal, '"Well you know what my instructions are. I am sorry to
intrude, but Holmes insisted that I should not leave you'" (Doyle 124). He very rarely strays from
the instructions Sherlock has given him and takes his role as Henry's temporary bodyguard fairly
seriously. He even later says in a letter to Sherlock, "'I imagined what my feelings would be if I had
to return to you and confess to you that some misfortune had occurred through my disregard for
your instructions,'" (Doyle 125). Watson holds in high regard the things that Sherlock says to him
and will always attempt to follow what he says with intent to please him. Jack Stapleton and Henry
Baskerville are the other two semi–major characters in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Henry is a
driving force for the plot as he is the reason Watson and Sherlock are involved in the first place. He
starts off as a fairly adventurous, semi–laid back character, but develops throughout the story to end
up like his late–uncle: Worn–out. On the other–hand, Jack Stapleton is our antagonist. He starts off
seemingly harmless, but you begin to understand toward the end of the book that he's a very mal–
intended man with very defined

How Doyle Create Suspense In The Hound Of The Baskervilles
Fabricated from the essence of his thoughts, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle revolutionized the mystery
genre, as we know it, in his stunning novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles. When read, Doyle's
readers embark on a journey to the filthy, crime filled streets of Victorian London and the
mysterious moor of the Baskervilles where unknown entities lurk. But most of all, readers come
face to face with the man himself, the greatest detective of all time, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Since it
first came out, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's world renown mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles, has
not failed to delight mystery readers. In fact, readers have enjoyed the novel so much that it has
become multiple movies. However, David Attwood's film stands out from the others ... Show more

As an author, it is typically harder to create suspense, but Doyle does an excellent job. With the use
of red herrings, superstition, cliffhangers, and more, Doyle creates an atmosphere of tension and
suspense. An example of one of these techniques is seen through the red herring: Selden. As soon as
the word got out that Selden had broken out of jail, he was easily taken as a suspect to readers.
However, In the movie, Selden causes more suspense by breaking into Baskerville Hall to get some
food. Another example of Doyle creating suspense in the novel was through the cliffhanger: the man
on the tor. Doyle creates suspense through this by leaving the readers wondering who was it that
Watson saw on the tor. Although Doyle creates suspense pretty well, Attwood creates even more.
One major asset that Attwood has is sound effects and noise. This is extremely efficient because
Attwood can make the things that Doyle does even better. For example, when the scene about
Selden escaping happens, sound effects such as sirens and yelling, make his escape more
suspenseful. In the same way, Attwood uses sound effects for things such as the howling of the
hound on the moor, or the screaming of victims. Although Attwood creates a lot of suspense through
sound effects, I'm sure that both Doyle and Attwood would agree that maybe the most effective way
of creating suspense is through character actions and nature. In both the movie and the novel, in the
resolution, a wave of fog appears before the hound arrives. In the novel, Holmes even says, "the one
thing upon earth which could have disarranged my plans.... Our success and even his life may
depend upon his coming out before the fog is over the path. (218)" In this moment, the readers wait
for the beast to strike as Doyle takes away their breath. This clearly creates suspension and tension

The Crime In The Speckled Band By Arthur Conan Doyle
"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the
truth?" was spoken by Sherlock Holmes, a famous English Literature icon, and Sherlock lived by
this too. Arthur Conan Doyle was a doctor who lived in Scotland, although he is more publicly
known as the author for the Sherlock Holmes mystery stories. While he never intended on becoming
a writer, he has still set the six fundamental requirements for a good mystery story. These six
requirements include the crime must be significant, the detective must be memorable, the criminal
must be a worthy advisory or opponent, the clues must be made available to the reader, the suspects
must appear early in the story, and the solution to the crime must be reasonable and plausible. While
not all six elements are required for it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a good detective story, a significant crime keeps the reader intrigued and on his or her feet,
waiting for the next page. For a crime to be significant, one must first figure out the crime and how
it is addressed. Then, it must be shown how important the crime is to the people and the story.
The Speckled Band. The crime in The Speckled Band was the murder of Julia, Helen's sister. The
crime was significant because Helen was afraid she would die, just as Julia did. Before Julia died,
she had signs that she told her sister, such as whistling and a few days later, she died. Once Julia
began to hear the whistling, she became anxious and went to seek help with her friend, Sherlock
Holmes.
The Man with the Twisted Lip. The crime in The Man with the Twisted Lip was the murder of
Neville St. Clair. At first, the crime was significant. They could not find a body or anything relating
to Neville St. Clair. However, at the end of the story, one realizes that Neville St. Clair was never
murdered, he was only in disguise as a beggar named Boone.

Who Is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
"Silver Blaze"
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom into a poor Irish Catholic
family. Although his grades were not the best, Doyle's parents were able to send him to medical
school. In addition to being poor, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's home life was miserable, so he used the
university as a sanctuary to get away from his cruel conditions. At the University of Edinburgh,
Doyle's professor and later inspiration, was Dr. Joseph Bell. Dr. Bell had astounding powers of
deduction which he used to in addition to his medical experience as surgeon to examine many crime
scenes. Bell's awe–inspiring abilities will later become Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's source of
inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. As time moved on and Doyle continues to fall short in his medical
career, he begins to write short stories to make ends meet. After having many of his works published
in a local magazine, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writes his first Sherlock Holmes story. Sherlock
Holmes instantly became a huge success who captivated its readers with his incredible powers of
deduction. With the fame of Holmes, came more demands for Doyle to write more stories. In
contrast to Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle becoming a huge success, no one knew that
the beloved character was based on a real man. Doyle's inspiration for Sherlock Holmes finally
comes to light in an interview with the press. Little did Doyle know that his gratitude would soon
become Dr. Bell's curse. Following the

Conan Doyle : A Middle Child
Conan Doyle was a middle child; the middle child's characteristics are described as a mixture of the
first and second born. Conan Doyle can fit into this definition perfectly. As a young adult, he was
intent on taking care of his family, namely his mother and siblings. He housed them and supported
them financially, even before he was rich. He spent a great majority of his life chasing achievement;
at first it was the achievements others (family, teachers, influential people in his life) wanted for him
and then later on it was achievements he wanted for himself. Not only did he chase though, he
caught and took the world by storm. At one point during his life, he was the most well known author

Ultimately Sherlock Holmes was retired in His Last Bow. This, the notoriety, is what Conan Doyle
was competing against. People often referred to him as Sherlock Holmes and he received pleas from
detectives addressed to 'Mr. Sherlock Holmes' (Carr 139). Conan Doyle easily wrote well over 100
different stories and books, 60 of which were about Sherlock Holmes. The other books he wrote,
like The White Company and Sir Nigel, were his attempt to make a masterpiece that would
overshadow Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle believed that the Sherlock Holmes stories were not his
best work and hated that they were what he was so famous for. His other stories got extremely
popular too but he was blind to the praise they received. If the story did not top Sherlock Holmes in
the public eye, than to Conan Doyle it was a failure (Carr 174–75). Although Conan Doyle never
admitted it blatantly, Sherlock Holmes was at least partially based off himself. The biographer, Carr,
found an entry of Conan Doyle's journals where he writes about the resemblance between Holmes
and himself. He also talked to his love and second wife, Ms. Jean Leckie, about it (Carr 206, 263).
According to Adler, family constellation was not the only influential part of the family context; he
also emphasized the family's atmosphere. The family atmosphere helps develop how the child reacts

Sherlock Holmes By Sir Arthur Canon Doyle
Sherlock Holmes is a literary character, created by one of the most popular writers Sir Arthur Canon
Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is the first and the only consulting detective in the fictional character. He
has a partner named John Watson, who sometimes help Sherlock in different ways in solving the
case and is doctor and Holmes' personal assistant. Sherlock Holmes is an excellent detective because
of his strengths such as knowledgeable on many esoteric subjects, the power of observation, and the
power of deduction.
Geeta S. Iyengar says, "Knowledge has a beginning but no end." I agree with this quote because I do
not think there is anyone in this world who has a knowledge of everything or is perfect. A person
will always find a new idea that he or she is not familiar with in day to day life. We learn something
new every day. It is really worth to strengthen your knowledge on more than one subject. Especially
for the detectives because they will need an abundant knowledge on many subjects to solve the
cases. Sherlock is intelligent, clever, and knowledgeable on many esoteric subjects. For example,
Watson mentions Sherlock's strengths on knowledge in A Study in Scarlet, "Politics, botany,
geology, chemistry, anatomy, sensational literature, and British law" (26). Knowledge in those
subjects always assists Sherlock in solving a case. Every person should continue to acquire
knowledge because it may help them in the future. It is better to have extra knowledge than not

The Commitments By Roddy Doyle: An Analysis
Roddy Doyle, author of The Commitments, portrays a young Irish bands' dreams of becoming a
Dublin soul group that impacts others. In the beginning, The Commitments, as they call themselves,
are motivated by the desire to represent a genre of music their people can relate to; but as time

outlet. Joey, Jimmy, and Deco's desire for fame and fortune dictates The Commitments and
eventually causes them to break up. The Commitments slowly come together with the help of one

Character Analysis Of Arthur Conan Doyle
Title
Arthur Conan Doyle, portrays Sherlock to be that of an intellectual and ingenious detective.
Sherlock presents those traits in copious ways while solving his endless amounts of crimes.
However, the main quality Sherlock repetitively uses to help solve his mysterious, is his
manipulative personality. Sherlock Holmes uses manipulation to influence his accomplices or in
most cases his sidekick Watson, to intimidate or trick his suspects into confession, and to remain
control of his situations or further plans. In both (Doyle, Arthur Conan. The Adventure of the Dying

Many times Doyle lets Sherlock come off as manipulative to really influence his friends so that he is
able to make his case. He uses his manipulation to his advantage so that there will be little to no
complications when solving his crimes.
Manipulation is a huge part of Sherlock's personality, and in every way he tries to use it to his as
well as his mystery solving advantage. Doyle enforces Sherlock to question his suspects so that they
will confess to their wrong–doings. Sherlock uses his manipulative skills to intimidate and trick his
suspects into giving information without them even realizing they are doing so. Sherlock is
incredibly clever, and quite witty when being manipulative, he does it so nonchalantly that his
suspects really think it's to their advantage, an example of this is when Sherlock is arguing with the
goose merchant, "It's merely taking your money, for I know that I am right. But I'll have a sovereign
on with you, just to teach you not to be obstinate." (Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, 54). Sherlock
is so clever to accuse his suspect of something, so that they will give the evidence he is looking for.
He's determined to continue his case with all leading evidence, and so therefore he uses his
manipulative manner to achieve just that.

The Exciting Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
According to Alison M. Lewis who wrote "Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters," he married a
woman named Louisa Hawkins in 1885. Twelve years later he fell in love with another lady named
Jean Elizabeth Leckie, but out of respect for his wife he kept their relationship friendly and nothing
more. Bittersweetly for Doyle, Loiusa died of tuberculosis in 1906. The next year he was wed to
Jean and they stayed together until her death in 1940 (Lewis 114). Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also had
five children in his lifetime. According to June Sawyers, the writer of "Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life
In Letters," his first wife birthed two of his children and Jean Elizabeth Leckie had the other three.
Mary Louise was his first child, born in 1889, then Kingsley was born three years later. His second
wife had their first child in 1909, named Denis Percy Stewart, who married a Georgian Princess
later in his life. The other children were named Adrian Malcolm and Jean Lena Annette (Sawyers
14). Through all the stresses of family and work, Doyle wanted to eliminate Sherlock Holmes from
his busy schedule. According to Theodore Dalrymple who wrote "The Eternal Detective," Doyle had
his own medical practice set up in London, but no patients ever came. He would write while waiting
for customers. He eventually became tired of writing and wanted to kill off Sherlock Holmes
because the character was distracting him from more important issues. In 1893 he wrote "The Final

Although, the words were never actually uttered by Sherlock Holmes, the phrase "Elementary, my

Nevertheless, his career as a doctor never fully came to fruition and he eventually started writing. As
the Boer War broke out, Doyle enlisted as a surgeon, and after he returned, he published The Hound
of the Baskervilles (British Writers 161).
Robinson's description had an incredible effect on Doyle's hound of the Baskervilles, the beast
around which Doyle centered the novel. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, the mysterious beast that
haunts the inhabitants of the house near the moor is described as such: A hound, it was, an enormous
coal–black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open
mouth, its eyes glowed with a smoldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in
flickering flame. Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage,
more appalling, more hellish be conceived . . . . (Doyle 229)

Families Portrayed In Roddy Doyle's Books
Why do we hear so much about family these days? Perhaps it is because relationships between
family members are assumed to be the prototype for all other social relations. In the novels, The
Commitments, The Snapper and The Van,
Roddy Doyle shows his support of the family as an institution. Each character demonstrates strength
and direction within the family unit. However, when the stability of the family is threatened, each
character breaks down along with the family itself.
When we think of family life we associate happiness, a life of sharing memories and developing

He describes his writing as "a challenge that's the enjoyable part. To an extent, that's what
happened with all my books because I've never experienced any of the subjects I write about. I used
to be a ten–year old boy, but I certainly didn't watch my parents marriage disintegrate. I was never in
a band, I've never been pregnant and I've never been unemployed for a day in my life."3 It is
shown that Doyle has strong family values. In his writing he clearly demonstrates that if one family
member falls, it effects the rest of the family. In The Commitments, throughout the entire novel, the
band acts like a family. As the manager, Jimmy plays the role of the father figure and trys to keep
the band reaching higher levels, together. But, as members begin to fight
Jimmy finds it more difficult to keep the group together.

The Life and Success of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, and passed on July 7,1930 of a heart attack. He
was born into a prosperous Irish family in which he was the eldest son of ten children of Mary Foley
Doyle and Charles Doyle. His father, Charles Doyle was not an artist by profession but was
responsible for some of the earlier illustrations in his sons series of Sherlock Holmes. His father was
also a chronic alcoholic. Mary Foley Doyle was master storyteller with a passion for books which
shows in Arthur himself. His family were followers of Roman Catholicism, Doyle himself had been
educated by Jesuits, but as a young boy found himself "veering" away from Catholicism, with no
interest in another religion or belief. When attending school he had many a skill and had talents in
various sports, which he later portrayed in Sherlock Holmes. When he was in school is played
cricket and had been very good at it. Doyle also developed a skill of storytelling and often found
himself with groups of younger children around him listening to the stories. He was an avid reader
of many genres including adventure, historical romance, and gothic novels, this being what struck
him to write stories in similar genres while in practice of his medical profession. Training at
Edinburgh University he met a sum of other authors such as; James Barrie and robert Lewis

The Hound Of The Baskervilles By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Literature has been the gateway to imagination and curiosity of the human mind. It enables people
to see the world through the perspective of another. As one dives deeper into a novel, they begin a
journey through each page of an experience like no other. While literature is ultimately just written
words on a page, one can visualize themselves in a totally different world, yet still be in the comfort
of their own home just by the power of imagination that is presented with a novel. Most specifically
with classic literature, it portrays life from the period in which it was written in but still stands the
test in time and has that timeless feel to it. A prime example of this category of literature is the

It is without a doubt that these individual characters will permanently remain close to the hearts of
each reader in some way. For instance, the narrator in the story Dr. Watson has a true desire to
impress his superior partner Sherlock Holmes. However, on several occasions Watson is simply
hidden in the shadows of Holmes and is almost just left out of the detection despite his constant
drive to prove he can keep up with Holmes 's intelligence. Though he is the detective 's partner,
Watson is often excluded in Holmes's problem–solving. In the quote "I wanted to give up searching,
but then I would have been recognized as Holmes ' only weakness" (Ch 4, Pg 37). Dr. Watson is
struggling to solve the case but he realizes if he does give up, he will be thought as the weak link
between the pair and does not want to let his partner down as well. Many readers can relate to this
feeling of neglect or just not being good enough at one point in their life. It is a very negative feeling
and the reader can feel that sense of sympathy and understanding for Watson 's situation. In addition,
the main protagonist Sherlock Holmes is a very respected person in the novel and other characters
do not even have the ability to maintain simple conversation with him because of his intellectual
dominance. However, in the quote, "He burst into one of his rare fits of laughter...I have not heard

Comparing Doyle And Atwood
Doyle and Atwood use an effective combination of short, snappy sentences along with longer,
breathless sentences in their prose in order to keep the audience interested and involved in the
reading. In Brian Doyle's "Joyas Volardores" I was intrigued how he made an animal as small as a
hummingbird seem like such a marvelous creature leaving me with a sense of awe after reading the
first paragraph. He gives a very vivid description of the birds in the second paragraph; so vivid I felt
that he was exaggerating to a certain extent. I was surprised to find that as I continued reading Doyle
started to discreetly add a human element to the story. Although he was talking about birds and
whales, Doyle intentionally uses the word "you" three times

The Stories Of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a 19th century author who is known by his stories of Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes is a crime series based in the Victorian era when "feminists in this period were
calling for women and children to have equal protection under the law" (Miller 55). He is consider
one of most known iconic British characters created who solves mysteries with visual detection.
One thing is clear author Conan Doyle portrays women as a weakness in Holmes's visual approach,
"his extraordinary powers" (Doyle 240) on crime cases, female criminals either get the "last laugh"
or outwit him. As years went by many adaptations brought the adventures to life with their own
twists and turns on their take on the story plot especially when it comes to "criminality" and
femininity" (Miller 30). Such as the BBC television show version of Sherlock of its version of "The
Abominable Bride" or even CBS Elementary of its version of Irene Adler and Moriarty in "The
Woman" episode, the question lays are the views truly different or any better when it comes to
representing female criminals or women in general. Female criminals comes into play in many of
Conan Doyle's Sherlock series and they somehow women is able to deceive him. It comes to our
understanding in the book series Holmes doesn't judge women by her "outward appearance" because
he believes one should look "at the matter clearly and fairly" (Doyle 913). That it is more than

been heavily influenced by Dr. Joseph Bell, whom he met at the Edinburgh Infirmary and whose

makes the crime significant to the reader because it involves a young woman who is in danger of
losing her life if someone does come and save her, and he makes it memorable too because it is
significant that Helen's own stepfather Roylott would be trying to murder her.
The Man with the Twisted Lip Doyle in "The Man with the Twisted Lip" describes to the readers a
crime spoken of by Holmes of a man named Neville St. Clair who has went missing without a trace.
The reader learns of no body being found, and leads some to suspect that Neville St. Clair might not
even be dead. This was the start of modern day cold cases. If you do not have a body it is kind of
hard to start an investigation. However, Holmes does what he can and makes the case interesting.
Sherlock Holmes states, "there were no signs of violence upon any of these garments, and there
were no traces of Mr. Neville St. Clair" (Doyle, 1994, p. 120). These garments Holmes speaks of
belong to Mr. Neville St. Clair, but there are no signs of violence towards him as saw by the state of
his clothes. This then furthers the significance of the crime because at first it seems to be a murder

The story is written like a diary of Paula Spencer's good and bad memories in her life and gives the

The family was actually Catholic; Arthur and his siblings had been raised in this religion. While
Arthur excelled at school, he found the classes dry and uninspiring. He loved history but in a more
romantic and descriptive fashion, the type of history found in his favorite book, Ivanhoe. He
believed that the teachers, who were Fathers, of the school undervalued his talent and that the
teachers did not like or respect him. The belief was erroneous; the teachers at his school, Stonyhurst,
knew how intelligent and talented Arthur was but also how stubborn he could be. This is
exemplified by his constant and intentional rule breaking that lead to severe punishments he endured

The purpose of this project is to assess whether Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist in Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle's detective stories, has Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASP). Antisocial Personality
Disorder is a personality disorder characterized by impairments in personality functioning, along
with the presence of multiple pathological personality traits. Many aspects of Sherlock Holmes'
personality and behavior are indicative of ASP. In order to demonstrate this, I used the Diagnostic

characterization of Holmes throughout Doyle's works. Specifically, I related DSM criteria to

Lastly, the impairments cannot be attributed to the individual's developmental or sociocultural
context, and they cannot be caused by drug use. Due to the extensive nature of these DSM criteria,
however, I used only three aspects of the diagnostic list to assess Holmes. The complete list of
diagnostic criteria for ASP can be found in the Appendix (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Throughout many of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories, Holmes exhibits an impairment in
empathy. In the DSM, an impairment in empathy is classified as an impairment in interpersonal
functioning. It is defined as a "lack of concern for feelings, needs, or suffering of others; lack of
remorse after hurting or mistreating another" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Essentially,
impairment in this area is characterized by a person's general disregard for others' feelings or
suffering. In Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet", we learn that Holmes has an
impairment in empathy. Stamford, who is describing Holmes to John Watson, says that Holmes "
[beats] the subjects in the dissecting room with a stick... to verify how far bruises may be produced
after death" (Doyle 1887/1986). Although the subjects that Holmes is mutilating are corpses, this
behavior does show a lack of empathy. Holmes shows an utter disregard for these corpses – who
were alive and well, at a point – by mutilating them and beating them. Although he does this

How Did Doyle Write The Hound Of The Baskervilles

As James P. Draper confirmed, Doyle worked best under these conditions. James P. Draper

The Hound Of The Baskervilles by Conan Doyle
Conan Doyle is best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr Watson. His

Arther Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859. He spent a year in Austria before taking a

own deductive methods and 'Elementary' approach to solving mysteries. His work was so popular
because at that time detection was rising.

Also Holmes points out the teeth marks on the stick, although he only knows what dog they're from
because he seems the dog through the window, this helps show the reader that Watson believes
Holmes knew the type of dog just from its teeth marks, when really it's just because he can see the
dog outside the window. 'The dog's jaw, as shown in the space between these marks, is too broad in
my opinion to be a terrier and not broad enough for a mastiff. It may have been –yes, by jove it is a

The language used by the characters is some what different to the language used by people today.
They don't tend to use 'slang' and generally talk a lot posher. "Really Watson, you excel yourself"

is sort of top dog around, Watson does talk posh, however he doesn't have the same was of speech as

Conan Doyle also spends time in building tension and suspense by concentrating on the language of
horror. In chapter two, he introduces us to the legend of the Baskervilles and the death of Sir Hugo.
Doyle begins to set his tone for the reader by describing Hugo as a 'Wild profane godless man'. This

Comparing The Hound Of The Baskervilles By Arthur Conan Doyle
"The differences are obvious" as Arthur Conan–Doyle states. (Doyle, 51) As all stories that have
been both stories and books, there will he obviously some similarities and some differences between
the two versions. The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan–Doyle and the more recent movie
in the 2012 TV series "Sherlock", are two great examples to compare and contrast story lines. It is
these two pieces that I will be writing about. Returning to Doyle's quote, it is obvious while looking
for differences. It 's what makes each version stand out. Now, the differences may alter the story
slightly, but the similarities bring back the most important details back to the same main idea. As for
my opinion on my personal preference, I will be writing about that as well. The differences are what
makes it unique from the other version, while the similarities bring it back to the same story.
Similarities, differences and my personal opinion will be what this essay is about. To keep the same
plot of the two versions of a story there must be some similarities to keep it on the same track. The
similarities are the main ideas that are found in both versions of the stories. "Mr. Holmes, they were
the footsteps of a gigantic hound!" (Doyle, 30). This quote is found in both the movie and the book.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" written by Conan Doyle can be approached from many
spheres. Being critical we only challenge ourselves to over whelm and announce a more grandiose
work upcoming, or being a marvels critic oppose the massive feedback of readers worldwide.
Approaching the matter in a positive way is a result of individuals who have been inspired by
detectives. The character of Sherlock Holmes does represent detectives in the best way.
In an imaginative and yet realistic readers perception, he is a person who is always focused every
inch of detail on a daily and simulative approach is noted down in his mind. Always being on the
lookout for clues, and mind challenges, his mind is always alert. It can show an ideological example
of how every detective should. Again, a fictive ideology frame implies that detectives should remain
alert and focused all the time.
The focused of this essay will be the main character that is simultaneous and decisive to some extent
in a variety of patterns. The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and the narrative development of other
characters as well have allowed readers to find and reflect their selves in the plot or the characters,
or both.
The characters and stories appear to be very real due to which stories appealed a lot. The methods
which the Sherlock Holmes uses to solve the cases are extraordinary. The stories were written to
create suspense and shows how Sherlock Holmes wrestles with different cases when the police fail.

Doyle's work was popular while he was alive, although not for the reasons that he preferred. Sir

Soon after his first marriage in 1886, Doyle, a then struggling author, wrote a mystery novel now
known as "A Study in Scarlet." This work was published in Beeton's Christmas Annual and was the
first of sixty appearances of the famed detective, Sherlock Holmes. The following years, Doyle
would become very active in the Spiritualist movement from 1887 to 1916 for which he wrote three
books. Despite this, he was most widely known for his Sherlock Holmes series. In fact, Doyle
attempts to kill off the character of Holmes in one of his books in order to focus more on Spiritualist
writings, but was forced to revive the character in order to get more money for his missionary work.
Two years before his death in 1930, Doyle published a compilation of twelve stories about Sherlock
Holmes entitled The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes ("Arthur Conan Doyle"). A Study in Scarlet
follows Dr. John Watson, a veteran of the Afghan war who is now trying to fit back into London
society. An old friend of his sends him in the direction of a man named Sherlock Holmes who is
looking for a roommate. Soon after settling in, Holmes reveals to Watson what he does for a living,
helping the police solve crimes as a consulting detective. Holmes then invites Watson to observe a
murder crime scene with him. Despite his methods being tedious, Watson soon discovers that his
roommate is a genius. Holmes' use of subtle details reveals the shoe size, height, and finger nail
length of the suspect of the

Biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Although Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is often regarded as just an author, he was much more. His works
were inspired by the times and the people he met, and his literary influence remains relevant today.
On May 22, 1859 Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to Charles and
Mary Doyle. He was their third child, and one of ten children all together. Charles Doyle was a
political cartoonist and civil servant who earned only £300 per year, so money was very tight in the
household. Partially due to his father's alcoholism and mental instability, he and Charles weren't
ever close. However, he and his mother were. Mary was passionate about books and was a gifted
storyteller. Charles reflected on this in one of his biographies ... Show more content on

He also encountered fellow artists such as James Barrie and Robert Louis Stevenson. Two years
later, Arthur wrote a short story entitled The Mystery of Sasassa Valley, and it was accepted in the
Chamber's Journal, an Edinburgh magazine. Soon after, he wrote the story The American Tale which
was published in London Society. He said, "It was in this year that I first learned that shillings might
be earned in other ways than by filling phials." When Arthur turned 20 he was offered a job as
surgeon on the whaling boat Hope. He loved the adventure and camaraderie on the barge saying, "I
went on board the whaler a big straggling youth, I came off a powerful well–grown man." and that
the arctic "awakened the soul of a born wanderer." These experiences influenced the story Captain
of the Pole Star. He went back to the university in 1880 and acquired his Bachelor of Medicine and
his Master of Surgery degree. Then he went on the Mayumba, serving as ship's surgeon again, for
his first gainful employment. It navigated between Liverpool and the West Coast of Africa. He
found Africa "detestable" and quite as soon as they were back in England. Facing the prospect of
having to file for bankruptcy, he moved to Portsmouth to open his first practice. He struggled with
trying to be a good doctor and become a recognized author. This earned him a fairly decent salary.
Though he was busy with medicine and writing he married Louisa Hawking, whom he described as

  • 1. Sherlock Holmes By Arthur Conan Doyle To begin with, the first indispensable step in the research should be devoted to the Scottish writer sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the famous Victorian detective Sherlock Holmes. The fact that Conan Doyle was not the first detective writer is definitely worth mentioning. The founder of the detective genre is considered to be the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story of detective fiction oficially started in 1841 when Poe published his "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (Kopley 31). This famous story established literary conventions which are used in detective fiction till the present time. The main character of Poe`s novels, the Paris detective C. August Dupin, has become a prototype of the detective image which does not stale even nowadays, and had a big influence on Sherlock Holmes`s image (Schwartz 15). Arthur Conan Doyle devoted his famous quotation to Poe: "Each [of Poe's detective stories] is a root from which a whole literature has developed... Where was the detective story until Poe breathed the breath of life into it?" (Dawn 323). The reference to Dupin`s character can be even found in the first story of Sherlock book series A Study in Scarlet (1887) where Holmes mensions Dupin when Watson tries to compare the two detectives: "No doubt you think you are complimenting me... In my opinion, Dupin was a ... • 18. Oh, Play that Thing and The Dead Republic by Roddy Doyle In Roddy Doyle's series Oh, Play That Thing and The Dead Republic the world is shown to the readers through the eyes of a wise fool, Henry Smart. The series includes a wide variety of magical realism, and how Henry continues to fight social norms to get what he wants. The idea of society vs. man and individualism takes a toll on Henry's pride by forcing him to jump from job to job or from flat to flat that ultimately puts him in disarray. Each book's analysis should be in its own category, but they have many identical ideas, themes, and characters that bring them together. The elements of magical realism in a historical series, at first sight seem quite suitable. It is generally agreed that the picaresque, with its humorous ideas on the social outcasts trying to endure an aggressive environment, is a sensible move against the romanticize tendency of the plot. Magic realism, with its limited interruption of mimetic rules, lends itself to a number of uses, postcolonial being one of them. It introduces elements of grotesque moments that allow the readers to sense the satirical potentials and it brings in metaphorical aspects to the plate. The aspects of magical realism seem to play with the readers mind. The convention of picaresque combined with magical realism builds a wider grotesque vision for the reader. It is not only the space but also the characters, the main protagonist among them are shaped according to the defamilliarising rules of this magical picaresque world. ... • 26. Similarities Between Sherlock Holmes And John Doyle "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth" claimed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These words would come to influence some of the greatest and most renowned characters of any and all detective esque literature: Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Doyle's work Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles became incredibly popular and was eventually recognized as an American classic. Through his novel, Doyle portrays a fantastic use of the elements of fiction and takes advantage of them in order to provide depth and understanding. The novel first takes place in the 1880's, in London, at Sherlocks famous office on 221B Baker Street. This is only prominent in the beginning because the setting changes ... I am sorry to intrude, but Holmes insisted that I should not leave you'" (Doyle 124). He even later says in a letter to Sherlock, "'I imagined what my feelings would be if I had to return to you and confess to you that some misfortune had occurred through my disregard for your instructions,'" (Doyle 125). Watson holds in high regard the things that Sherlock says to him and will always attempt to follow what he says with intent to please him. Jack Stapleton and Henry Baskerville are the other two semi–major characters in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Henry is a driving force for the plot as he is the reason Watson and Sherlock are involved in the first place. • 30. How Doyle Create Suspense In The Hound Of The Baskervilles Fabricated from the essence of his thoughts, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle revolutionized the mystery genre, as we know it, in his stunning novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles. When read, Doyle's readers embark on a journey to the filthy, crime filled streets of Victorian London and the mysterious moor of the Baskervilles where unknown entities lurk. But most of all, readers come face to face with the man himself, the greatest detective of all time, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Since it first came out, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's world renown mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles, has not failed to delight mystery readers. In fact, readers have enjoyed the novel so much that it has become multiple movies. However, David Attwood's film stands out from the others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an author, it is typically harder to create suspense, but Doyle does an excellent job. With the use of red herrings, superstition, cliffhangers, and more, Doyle creates an atmosphere of tension and suspense. An example of one of these techniques is seen through the red herring: Selden. As soon as the word got out that Selden had broken out of jail, he was easily taken as a suspect to readers. However, In the movie, Selden causes more suspense by breaking into Baskerville Hall to get some food. Another example of Doyle creating suspense in the novel was through the cliffhanger: the man on the tor. Doyle creates suspense through this by leaving the readers wondering who was it that Watson saw on the tor. Although Doyle creates suspense pretty well, Attwood creates even more. One major asset that Attwood has is sound effects and noise. This is extremely efficient because Attwood can make the things that Doyle does even better. For example, when the scene about Selden escaping happens, sound effects such as sirens and yelling, make his escape more suspenseful. In the same way, Attwood uses sound effects for things such as the howling of the hound on the moor, or the screaming of victims. Although Attwood creates a lot of suspense through sound effects, I'm sure that both Doyle and Attwood would agree that maybe the most effective way of creating suspense is through character actions and nature. In both the movie and the novel, in the resolution, a wave of fog appears before the hound arrives. In the novel, Holmes even says, "the one thing upon earth which could have disarranged my plans.... Our success and even his life may depend upon his coming out before the fog is over the path. (218)" In this moment, the readers wait for the beast to strike as Doyle takes away their breath. The Crime In The Speckled Band By Arthur Conan Doyle "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?" was spoken by Sherlock Holmes, a famous English Literature icon, and Sherlock lived by this too. Arthur Conan Doyle was a doctor who lived in Scotland, although he is more publicly known as the author for the Sherlock Holmes mystery stories. At the University of Edinburgh, Doyle's professor and later inspiration, was Dr. Joseph Bell. The other books he wrote, like The White Company and Sir Nigel, were his attempt to make a masterpiece that would overshadow Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle believed that the Sherlock Holmes stories were not his best work and hated that they were what he was so famous for. His other stories got extremely popular too but he was blind to the praise they received. If the story did not top Sherlock Holmes in the public eye, than to Conan Doyle it was a failure (Carr 174–75). Although Conan Doyle never admitted it blatantly, Sherlock Holmes was at least partially based off himself. Sherlock Holmes is the first and the only consulting detective in the fictional character. Sherlock Holmes is an excellent detective because of his strengths such as knowledgeable on many esoteric subjects, the power of observation, and the power of deduction. Geeta S. Iyengar says, "Knowledge has a beginning but no end." I agree with this quote because I do not think there is anyone in this world who has a knowledge of everything or is perfect. A person will always find a new idea that he or she is not familiar with in day to day life. We learn something new every day. It is really worth to strengthen your knowledge on more than one subject. Especially for the detectives because they will need an abundant knowledge on many subjects to solve the cases. Sherlock is intelligent, clever, and knowledgeable on many esoteric subjects. For example, Watson mentions Sherlock's strengths on knowledge in A Study in Scarlet, "Politics, botany, geology, chemistry, anatomy, sensational literature, and British law" (26). Robinson's description had an incredible effect on Doyle's hound of the Baskervilles, the beast around which Doyle centered the novel. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, the mysterious beast that haunts the inhabitants of the house near the moor is described as such: A hound, it was, an enormous coal–black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open mouth, its eyes glowed with a smoldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame. Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish be conceived . . . . That very night Holmes runs Julia's and Helen's potential killer back up the rope and back to its master, Roylott, where it then kills him instead (Doyle, 1994, p. 171). Doyle makes the crime significant to the reader because it involves a young woman who is in danger of losing her life if someone does come and save her, and he makes it memorable too because it is significant that Helen's own stepfather Roylott would be trying to murder her. The Man with the Twisted Lip Doyle in "The Man with the Twisted Lip" describes to the readers a crime spoken of by Holmes of a man named Neville St. Clair who has went missing without a trace. The reader learns of no body being found, and leads some to suspect that Neville St. Clair might not even be dead. This was the start of modern day cold cases. If you do not have a body it is kind of hard to start an investigation. However, Holmes does what he can and makes the case interesting. Sherlock Holmes states, "there were no signs of violence upon any of these garments, and there were no traces of Mr. Neville St. Clair" (Doyle, 1994, p. 120). These garments Holmes speaks of belong to Mr. Neville St. Clair, but there are no signs of violence towards him as saw by the state of his clothes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22nd of 1859 to Charles Doyle and Mary Foley in Edwardian England, he was the third child but first boy born to the young couple. Eventually they had 9 children in all, 7 of which made it into adulthood and 2 of those were male. Mary adored young Arthur and filled his head with romantic stories of their Irish heritage. While Arthur excelled at school, he found the classes dry and uninspiring. He loved history but in a more romantic and descriptive fashion, the type of history found in his favorite book, Ivanhoe. He believed that the teachers, who were Fathers, of the school undervalued his talent and that the teachers did not like or respect him. The belief was erroneous; the teachers at his school, Stonyhurst, knew how intelligent and talented Arthur was but also how stubborn he could be. This is exemplified by his constant and intentional rule breaking that lead to severe punishments he endured to simply prove that he was strong and unbreakable. Even with his troublemaking approach, Arthur made it through the school with top marks. After his time at Stonyhurst the Ma'am insisted he continue on into medical school, which he did. Alfred Adler, developed a theory to describe an individual's personality, through the theory Arthur's life can be illustrated. Alder's personality theory is called Individual Psychology, it has an emphasis on how culture and society influences not only the development of personality but also each behavior and emotion one experiences in their life. The Empty House, By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The purpose of this project is to assess whether Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories, has Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASP). Antisocial Personality Disorder is a personality disorder characterized by impairments in personality functioning, along with the presence of multiple pathological personality traits. Many aspects of Sherlock Holmes' personality and behavior are indicative of ASP. In order to demonstrate this, I used the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to relate specific ASP criteria to situations and characterization of Holmes throughout Doyle's works. Specifically, I related DSM criteria to quotations from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, the impairments cannot be attributed to the individual's developmental or sociocultural context, and they cannot be caused by drug use. Due to the extensive nature of these DSM criteria, however, I used only three aspects of the diagnostic list to assess Holmes. The complete list of diagnostic criteria for ASP can be found in the Appendix (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Throughout many of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories, Holmes exhibits an impairment in empathy. In the DSM, an impairment in empathy is classified as an impairment in interpersonal functioning. It is defined as a "lack of concern for feelings, needs, or suffering of others; lack of remorse after hurting or mistreating another" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Essentially, impairment in this area is characterized by a person's general disregard for others' feelings or suffering. In Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet", we learn that Holmes has an impairment in empathy. Stamford, who is describing Holmes to John Watson, says that Holmes " [beats] the subjects in the dissecting room with a stick... to verify how far bruises may be produced after death" (Doyle 1887/1986). Although the subjects that Holmes is mutilating are corpses, this behavior does show a lack of empathy. 'The dog's jaw, as shown in the space between these marks, is too broad in my opinion to be a terrier and not broad enough for a mastiff. The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan–Doyle and the more recent movie in the 2012 TV series "Sherlock", are two great examples to compare and contrast story lines. It is these two pieces that I will be writing about. Returning to Doyle's quote, it is obvious while looking for differences. It 's what makes each version stand out. Now, the differences may alter the story slightly, but the similarities bring back the most important details back to the same main idea. As for my opinion on my personal preference, I will be writing about that as well. The differences are what makes it unique from the other version, while the similarities bring it back to the same story. Similarities, differences and my personal opinion will be what this essay is about. To keep the same plot of the two versions of a story there must be some similarities to keep it on the same track.
