Japanese Women Research Paper
The signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2 September 1945, aboard the deck of USS
Missouri marked Japan's unconditioned surrender to the Allies, officially drawing an end to the
Second World War (Weber, 1997). Indeed it was the end of the Second World War, for the Japanese
people to 'begin a new life', an encouragement for Japan to rebuild, for the society to restructure,
also a new age for a Japanese woman's position in the Japanese society to be re–evaluated. In this
essay, I explore the status of the Japanese women between the pre–war period and the post–war
period, as well as hope to address the areas of discrimination that could be observed from the pre–
modern times and in the contemporary society.
In the pre–war period, all social classes including merchant, court ... Show more content on

Actresses or female spokesperson must smile to their male co–characters, an act set to represent
their feminine gender characters, which is women support or men; while male characters must not
smile, in order to highlight their competence and serious behaviour at work (Arima, 2003). It
illustrates that Japanese advertisers and producers allocate gender stereotypic actions to actors
according to socially desirable gender traits, for example, females must smile because they are
expected to serve and they have good interaction skills; while males must not smile, but instead they
are expected to showcase their abilities (Inoue & Ebara, 1995; Arima, 2003). This brought me to
ponder that in parallel to an individual's gender stereotype role and imagined identities, everyone is
categorised according to the society's value judgements and prejudice, based upon his or her
functionality within the contemporary social hierarchy; with that women will forever remain inferior

Persuasive Essay On Acting In Hollywood
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a question that children get asked quite frequently.
Most of the time, a child aims big and chooses an extravagant career, like an astronaut, a police
officer, or a doctor. Obviously, it is impossible for a child to obtain one of those jobs at such a young
age. However, acting in Hollywood is a possible career for a child. If a child is talented enough to
be a star, then why not let them pursue their passion? While the life of being an actor in Hollywood
seems like a dream to most children, fame comes with many terrible obstacles for some stars. Over
the years, there has been a large debate on whether or not acting in Hollywood as a child is as
picture–perfect as it seems. Hollywood is filled with tons of secrets. Why should a child be put into
such an untrustworthy environment? Acting in Hollywood is in no way safe for children. News
outlets are full of stories about former child stars who have gone "wild." Some stars develop
destructive partying habits at a young age. How do young, innocent stars learn about the use of
drugs and alcohol? They are invited to big Hollywood parties where they are introduced to
substances that lead to addiction. During adolescence, a child is still learning who they are and love
to experiment. Experimentation is healthy for a young mind, but substances like drugs and alcohol
can affect a developing mind negatively. Addiction is a tough obstacle to overcome, but it is even
more difficult to defeat

Japanese Kabuki : The Golden Age
Japanese Kabuki is an art form involving both style and drama to excite a compelling story. Izumo
No Okuni, the founder of kabuki, derives the name "[beginning] with the characters for "song" and
"dance," while the word's final character suggests the actor's talent" (D'Etcheverry 21). The early
1600s were when Japanese kabuki theatre came to light and spread across the nation like a wildfire.
Yet it still had not reached its peak until the late 1600s to mid 1800s also known as The Golden Age.
Kabuki evolved and the style changed but kept at its roots by entertaining through its visual
prowess. Moving forward into the Modern Era, The Cold War was the crisis at hand, and kabuki
was questioned because it was a Japanese art form. Kabuki has remained a difficult theatre to
maintain throughout the ages but Japanese Kabuki through its origin, The Golden Age, and modern
era evoke both emotion and entertainment through the use of elaborate technology and
showmanship. Kabuki started off in the year 1603 and was founded by a woman which at the time
was very unusual. Izumo No Okoni was never thought to be a name to remember before, until her
art form captured the hearts of many in the later era. She led a troupe and first performed on a dry
riverbed bed in Kyoto ("Kabuki Theatre of Japan"). They performed very erotic and outlandish
dances. Having women entertainers was also very unusual at the time especially because women
would play the roles of women, but even men. This sparked a

Stanislavski's Expectations Of Acting As The Imitation Of...
Acting, known by most as the imitation of life. Many theorists have gone to extreme lengths to try
to recreate the behaviors of man in everyday life, whether it be Stanislavski's method of using past
experiences, Chekhov's technique of imagining a situation, or naturalism's use of the environment.
But there are some that deny this goal of acting, they believe theatre can be so much more when it
isn't bound to the restraints of imitation. Tadashi Suzuki was one such man, who believed the goal
of acting should not be to be realistic, but for the actor to use all means necessary to convince the
audience of a truth. In order to do this, the actor must have complete control of his body, achieved
through following the Suzuki Method.
In the year 1939, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These experiences are capable of causing a relatively large amount of pain to the actor, and they
must use all of their invisible capabilities as much as they can in and in unison order to try to avoid
as much pain as possible. The impossibility of this method's requirements raises the goal to
perfection, leaving failure as the only possible outcome. No actor has or will ever be able to master
the Suzuki Method of Acting, because it's not meant to be mastered, it raises the actor to his
maximum potential, and leads the actor to always strive to be even better. This can be reflected
through the exercises, many actors, while doing the exercises, tend to notice faults in their acting,
and correct them, without even needing the guide of a teacher. There are more specific goals that are
used to help guide the actor in his training. The actor must understand the different way in which the
feet contact the floor, which stems from nō, where the atmosphere is created through the placement
of the feet. The actor must keep the upper body free, but strong, not disregard it and only focus on
the lower body, because it would disrupt the center of gravity. The actor must be constantly focused
and aware, despite the pressure from the exercises. The actor must learn how

Characteristics Of Torakku Yaro
6. Torakku Yaro (10 films, 1975–1979)
Norifumi Suzuki and Bunta Sugawara have already become famous, particularly through the
plethora of exploitation films they worked in. As the genre started to lose its appeal, major studios
turned to romantic comedies with some elements of action. Torakku Yaro, with the first directing
and the second starring, was one of the most successful.
Sugawara plays Momojiro Hoshi, a truck driver who drives around Japan, along with his colleague
Kinzo Matsushita. All ten of the films follow a similar formula. Momojiro falls in love with a
woman, but ends up having to help her relationship with another man, while the ending always
features a truck race.

Zatoichi (27 films, 1962–2003)
This particular title became globally known to the public through Takeshi Kitano's 2003 movie,
"The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi". However, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Before Kitano's
movie, there have been 26 more.
Let us take things from the beginning though. Our hero's first appearance was in a small story by
Kan Shimozawa, titled Zatoichi, although the concept, as a whole, was based on a secondary
character of this story, a blind gambler. He could guess what the dice would bring almost every
time. According to the Library of Congress, the story was included in a book titled Futokoro Techo,
which was first published in Japan by Chuo Koronsha in 1961.
The idea to write a Zatoichi movie came from Shintaro Katsu, who came to be the man behind the
hero, since he was the leading actor in all of the initial 26 movies (and director in the last) and also
in the TV series. The production company that took on the project was Daiei Studios.
The films were set during the Tokugawa era, where, except for some samurai that were under
government service, the rest of the samurai were forbidden to carry any weapon. It was the reason
Zatoichi carries his sword disguised as a cane, a rather popular weapon at that time, named

Asian Americans In The Entertainment Industry
In the American world of entertainment, there are thousands of famous actors, musicians, and
comedians. Despite the large number, how many of them are Asian? How many Asian entertainers
can you name off the top of your head? Of course there is Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Lucy Liu, and
Brenda Song, but that is only four performers. Now count how many Caucasian entertainers you can
name. It is probably significantly higher than the first number. Does the ratio of people reflect the
diversity of America? Today there are hundreds of Asian performers that go unnoticed to the public
eye who need to use alternative media because they cannot find a position that fits them. In this
essay, I will be discussing the issues and solutions surrounding Asians in the entertainment industry.

Now more than ever the voices of the people can be heard through protests or petitions or popular
social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter (Huq 81). Criticisms and protests against certain
roles and movies can be seen from virtually anywhere in the world. For example, the movie Ghost
in the Shell received a lot of criticism based on the fact that most of the cast was not Asian despite
the fact that the original source material was set in a futuristic–steampunk Tokyo comprised of
Japanese characters. This prompted a statement from the authors of the original source material
stating that they were okay with Caucasian actress Scarlett Johansson playing the protagonist
Motoko Kusanagi (Lachenal). Is it really okay to leave it like this though? Is it alright to just drop
the argument because the creator says so? I think not. An argument cannot be left alone only
because the creator says to especially because of the nature of the topic of race and ethnicity.
Kusinagi should have been played by a Japanese actress instead of a Danish actress feeding again to

Fragile Dream
Fragile Dream is a Nintendo Wii Japanese role play game created by Kentarou Kawashima. It is a
beautiful game that deals with the loneliness of the main character Seto. Seto is an apocalyptic
world, where he tries to find survivors of this catastrophic earthquake. He is told by his grandfather
that there are survivors at this red tower. Does he find those survivors or is he just wasting his time
and life to find people that are not alive? What does this video game offer to the video game
industry? The game was released in Japan on January 22, 2009 and was released to America on
March 16, 2009. The main character Seto is voiced by the famous voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch.

IGN reviews the game and had mixed emotion on it. The reviewer said Fragile Dreams is a great
example of a spectacular concept whose execution could have used a little more thought and time
(Casamassina 7). I love the premise, the setting, some of the characters, and the production values
(Casamassina 7). The story is engrossing. Exploring the lush, beautiful environments in search of
clues is fun (Casamassina 7). The flashlight controls and effects are impressive (Casamassina 7).
Even combat, in dire need of a lock–on, is functional (Casamassina 7). It does have a lot going for
it, and you'll see that reflected in the scores below. I do agree with this review about all this. The
game is very lush and has beautiful environment. He then goes on talking about the cons of the
game saying "And yet, some of the design decisions and gameplay conventions are exceedingly
tired and frustrating (Casamassina 8). The unnecessary, uninspired fetch quests, blatant backtracking
and awkward item management system distract and subtract in a big way from what is otherwise a
quality experience," (Casamassina 8). I also have to agree with what he say because he said it right.
The quest are pretty frustrating and it reaches to the point that it is not enjoyable at all. It is kind of
boring and makes the game feel like a chore sometimes" (Casamassina

Directing Courses For Exploration With The Body And Voice
I believe it is essential that acting and directing courses provide room for exploration with the body
and voice both discretely and within the context of more traditional scene work. I believe in offering
several forms of technique rather than one method that "must" be followed without room for
questioning, self–assessment, and thoughtful critique. I approach director training and new works
creation together, combining traditional directing, Viewpoints and composition work, and new
works creation as series of inquiries addressing those practices pivotal in developing directors:
finding the essence of the story and cultivating deep listening, focus, and an awareness of time and
space. As a creator and teacher of movement–based theatre, I believe it is crucial for student actors
and directors to cultivate a personal relationship to space, time, and their own bodies. In order for
students to move beyond the phase of trying to get something "right" and into thinking critically
about creation and the storytelling potential of movement, I stress the importance of laboratory
exploration. The goal is the journey, the investigation, the experimentation, and the increasing
knowledge of self. I encourage fearlessness. And I remind my students "there is no such thing as a
bad movement: we are investigating and creating, not judging." To begin to utilize the body for
theatrical creation, the first and foremost task is the development of awareness of self and awareness
of space. I use

What Is The Role Of Kabuki
Kabuki (歌舞伎) presents one of the most popular forms of traditional theatre in Japan with roots
tracing back to the Edo Period. The root of the word "kabuki" presents its definition clearly as it
contains three Chinese characters: "ka" means song, "bu" means dance and "ki" means prostitute.
Hence kabuki is the combination of music, dance and dialogues. The inventor of kabuki is one of
the dancers of Shinto temple, Okuni in 1603. Therefore kabuki used to be acted only by women till
1629. It involves elaborately designed costumes, eye–catching make–up, outlandish wigs, and
arguably most importantly, the exaggerated actions performed by the actors. Its plots are usually
based on historical events, warm hearted dramas, moral conflicts, love stories, ... Show more

Nowadays this form of performance is spread all over the world especially in European and Western
countries.
In the beginning women were active players of kabuki, but gradually it caused moral corruption in
the theatre. The government prevented women from taking part as actresses to elevate kabuki`s level
from sensuality to spirituality. As the result young men were replaced instead of women for playing
the feminine roles. This group of men was titled as Wakashu. However it was not a proper solution
since homosexuality appeared among actors. This absence of women was occurred in Shakespearian
dramas too as they considered them socially inferior with no right to participate in public activities.
James. R. Brandon and Samuel .L. Leiter stated: "It is commonly said that the chief aim of kabuki is
to be beautiful". The kabuki term`s homonym, "kabukimono" means the people who wore strange
costumes and passed the streets proudly, in the same way kabuki actors used odd cloths and make
ups according to their characters. The variety of their odd cloths caused many difficulties for actors
because they could not leave the stage to exchange dresses for

Realism Can Be Made For Realistic Actors
Having learnt all this, applications to realism can be made. One interpretation of the structure of
Kabuki plays is to have a change in posture and physical behavior throughout the performance,
showing progression in the character through their body, and after the character has endured all the
trials of the story, the actor demonstrates the character's ultimate control over themselves and their
surroundings. The postures in Kabuki relate to the postures people utilize to reflect who they are.
For realistic actors to exploit this, they must focus on forcing every idle moment of rest add just as
much characterization and depth to the character as one of extreme action. Ideally, the actor must
give each moment a crucial purpose, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is one complication, however, and that is its lack of precise detail, for as Suzuki explains, the
method can merely be evoked from the outside, true understanding only comes from experiencing
his discipline (Suzuki ix). First an examination of the Theory of Acting he created, which is the
heart of the method, specifically the idea of the invisible body. The invisible needs compose the
invisible body, "the most important of which are (1) energy production, (2) breath calibration and
(3) center of gravity control" (Suzuki Company of Toga). These needs cannot be seen, but are just as
essential as our physical needs. Just as the physical body endures training, so must the invisible
body, and in unity, since these needs are connected to each other. As the actor trains their physical
body, they become increasingly aware of the invisible body. The Suzuki Method is a series of
exercises that over time, help the actor gain a higher sense of control over their body. The stronger
their control is, the higher variety of movements they can execute, the finer their acting is. Forming
the basis of the Suzuki Method is the grammar of the feet. The feet are considered so crucial to the
method, that not even the arms and hands are as crucial, since they can only "augment the feeling
inherent in the body positions established by the feet" (Suzuki). The feet on the other hand, can even
"determine...the strength and nuance of the actor's voice"

Animated Character Race
I believe that any animated character of any race can fit the role of any person's voice. The animated
character is not real therefore, it should not matter what race the person is (you're not actually seeing
the person). Disney mainly focus on making sure that the actors voice suits the character he is
playing, they don't care about the ethnicity of the person. I agree with them because all that matters
is if the film is good. It does not matter how diversified the acting crew is. Many groups and people
like MANAA, Gene Luen Yang, Lalo Alcaraz, and Laika believe the acting group needs to be
diversified. If the film is good, it should not matter. Another reason why I believe acting crews do
not need to be diversified is because if the producer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believe this because they solely care about the quality of the persons acting ability and how
they perform. The people conforming with the conflict believe that if the animated character is
Asian then, the person has to be Asian if they want to speak this role. People are channeling their
opinion about this through social media. They are saying things like "Why are white actors playing
an entire extended Japanese Family?" Aoki says. They believe that the non animated character needs
to fit the animated person because they need to fit the background of the animated character. People
are questioning why there is a lack of diversity in the films. This doesn't make sense because how
can a white person act as Japanese character? I resist against what they believe because there job is
to act. People are fighting over equality between all the races. Ethnic groups are doing all they can
to be as equal as whites, so why should white actors not be able to act as an animated Japanese
character. Aren't all people of all races supposed to be treated equal and as the same. As the 14th
amendment says, all states must treat citizens equally. They can't favor men over women, blacks
over whites, or hetorsexuals over gays. Actors should also be given equal rights, as the constitution

The Role Of An Oreo-Black
It would be impossible to count how many times in my life I have been called an Oreo. Whether it

throughout my childhood and teenage years. In response to this term, I have always laughed and
playfully denied it, but inwardly cringed at the statement. The slang term Oreo – black on the
outside, white on the inside (in terms of race)– is mainly used to describe African American men
and women who do not behave in a way that is commonly thought of as "black", instead behaving
in a way that is "befitting a white person". That is– not acting "ghetto" or "uneducated". These

Examples Of Mimeti In Hamlet
Hamlet is nearer to the narrator in a play of Chikamatsu than to a chorus. Yet, he is different from
both. Unlike them, he is an intruder. He speaks to the players from the outside of the play and
speaks to the audience from the inside of the play. In this sense, he is alien to both. He is a narrator,
a wielder of Lexis. Unlike the chorus, he is a single person with a voice of his own. Furthermore,
unlike the narrator in the Japanese puppet theatre, he is visible. Unlike both, Hamlet seems to
impose his story both on the players and on the audience. In this sense, his subjectivity intrudes on
the illusion of objective representation. By speaking to the player, he violates one of the conventions
of dramatic representation, the illusion of the fourth wall. This fourth wall keeps another illusion in
the mind of the audience. We may call this kind of illusion the ... Show more content on

We know that many actors being famous for such or such a role become confused with the character
they once represented. On stage, as on the screen, the actor's self is absent to make present the
character's self. This absence secures the illusion of identification between the character and the
actor. This identification is not a one–way process. Indeed, as the actor acquires the name, the words
and the acts of the character, s/he gives him/her his/her physical features (appearance, voice, etc.).
This applies also to theatrical props and other theatrical devices. Narration, on the contrary, does not
provide for such illusions. Oral narration, nevertheless, retains a certain amount of theatricality. Yet,
unlike theater, it relies not on the illusion of presence, but on the illusion of continuity. The Ghost of
Hamlet is a case in point. He needs the theatrical art of assuming not to reproduce presence but to
reproduce continuity. In this light, we may read the Ghost's "remember me"(Hamlet, I, v, 91.) as
indicative of this urge of

Analysis Of ' Inuyasha ' And ' Othello '
When I was first exposed to Japanese culture, it came through the guise of a popular anime called
InuYasha. I was fascinated by the attention to detail and the intricate ways in which the Japanese
had woven a tale of death, reincarnation, love, and tragedy into the mold of good versus evil. Most
fascinating was the candid role blackness played in constructing the dichotomy between the
protagonist (InuYasha) and antagonist (Naraku). Continuously shrouded in darkness the main
antagonist, Naraku, embodied the epitome of evil, suspicion, wonder, exoticism and fear which
gives small glimpses into the far–reaching effects of blackness embedded in Japan today. InuYasha
and the portrayals of blackness in other anime like it, encouraged me to wonder about the effects
subversive historical conceptualizations of blackness have on portrayals of African Americans.
I began this study with a memory from my adolescents to implicate the importance of understanding
"blackness" in contemporary Japanese culture, which grants conflicting views of "blackness" as it is
redefined in popular culture. In conducting this study, I want to understand what these
representations will mean for African Americans, specifically women, who go to reside in Japan.
The lack of representation of black women in scholarly literature about East Asia prompted my
decision to conduct research on this topic. As I press further, I seek to understand the roles African
American women play as both conscious and unconscious

Asian American Stereotypes In Pop Culture
The view of POCs (People of Color) within mainstream media has always been strewed. From the
roles of Flora Robson as a Haitian maid in Saratoga Trunk to Mickey Rooney as I. Y. Yunioshi, the
view of POCs in American popular culture has always been warped to portray an often negative or
demeaning stereotype that appeases the white audience of American pop culture. Although many
races are negatively impacted by the conceptions of the white American public, the portrayal of
Asian American stereotypes in television has especially given an illusion to the American public on
what to assume when facing an Asian American. Even with the growth of the Asian American voice

Diversity In Movies
Cultural Diversity in Movies I believe there should be more cultural difference in movies. It's wrong

Japanese people play smaller characters. That's just one example of whitewashing. The Hollywood

women, according to the revered Misaki Isaka, their conduct "offstage is made responsible for
artistry onstage, such as singing (ka), dancing (bu), and acting (ki)" 2. This is how Japanese society
has come to view them over the years, but in reality, the Onnagata is a repressed individual that is

Actors at this time, in this particular mode of acting, were not seen as human until the Meiji period.
They were seen to be akin to puppets that could be disposed of, if they disobeyed. The actors were
seen to have to follow a strict code of rules in order for them to be able to remain in the Kabuki
industry in this period, such as not showing any homosexual tendencies and never breaking the
illusion of being a woman.
The manner in which the gender of female in Kabuki comes about is through the explicit
commodification of the female person, this is seen as, "Denying real women representation in favor
of a fictional construct favoring patriarchal values"5. This takes away the voice of real women in
Japan at this period along with the Onnagata, for if they do not speak within their realm of
allowance they would be punished. Women, in this period, occupied a very low station in Japan; in
Kabuki the men are depicted as being more women than woman. For the Onnagata is able to express
emotions and act in such a way at all times that the ordinary wife and mother cannot. This leaves the
woman in Japan with no place in society, due to this form of discrimination in which women are not
good enough to play women, so men must do it for them. There is a misogynistic undertone to
society and theater in this period that caused this extreme form of repression, which did not allow
whole groups of people to be themselves. The women in Japanese society and Onnagata shared the

Spectacle: Costumes And Masks In Ancient Greece

Spectacle is defined as "something that can be seen or viewed, especially something of a remarkable
or impressive nature." In theatre, spectacle keeps the audience entertained and adds to the
excitement. Spectacle keeps the audience entertained and adds to the excitement. Spectacle,
according to Aristotle, is the "least connected with the work of the poet (playwright). For example:
if the play has "beautiful" costumes and "bad" acting and "bad" story, there is "something wrong"
with it. Even though that "beauty" may save the play it is "not a nice thing". (Poetics) A play could
not have depth with spectacle alone. Costumes and masks are two of the biggest parts of spectacle.

For example, triangle patterns were meant to look like scales. Usually, the main character wore very
fancy, jeweled, and colorful costumes.
The masks in Noh theatre also had symbolic meaning. Usually, the main character would wear a

masks. The Japanese developed lighting effects with their masks. They figured out that pointing the
lights at the masks put emphasis on the expression. Facing the masks at different angles to the
audience helped with the emphasis.
The Bread and Puppet theatre was started in 1963 and used absurd and unique puppets and masks.

The Power Amongst The Noh Theatre
The word Noh is derived from the Sino–Japanese word for "skill" or "talent", which is exactly what
theatre brings to an audience, whether it is a show off of Broadway that everyone knows and loves,
or a local high school production of a new play or a world premiere no one has ever heard of. The
Noh plays of Japan have been compared to the greatest of Greek tragedies for their meaningful,
powerful poetry and splendidness of emotional intensity. The Noh Theatre is a major form of
classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the mid–14th century. "Stemming
from the popular entertainments in Nara during the Heian period (794–1185), in conjunction with
various ritual offering dances, Noh was created during the latter half of the Kamakura period (1185–
1333) and the early part of the Muromachi period 1336–1573" (Introducing the World of Noh). This
old tradition of theatre is still relevant and can still be performed today. But what really brings
towards the power amongst the Noh Theatre? Is it the costuming and the masks that the performers
would often wear? Is it the design of the set and the plot of the story that makes plays so intriguing?
Is it the sounds of the musical instruments played on–stage along with a chorus or underlying vocals
to back things up? With all of this power from the Noh theatre, there must be a "key" aspect that
keeps everything held together without the famous Japanese theatre from falling apart and what
makes the theatre feel so real.

The World of Hetalia: Japanese Anime
Imagine the world's countries as fun, hilarious personas in a parallel world. Sounds unrealistic?
Japanese writer/artist, Hidekaz Himaruya has won the hearts of many anime (Japanese animations)
lovers with his acclaimed anime series, Hetalia. It has 5 seasons with over 100 episodes in both
English and Japanese. Hetalia portrays the world's countries as people in an alternate world.
Countries such as Italy, Japan, England and even Canada are featured in the anime and have their
own distinct personalities. Italy is the protagonist and title character of Hetalia (which translates to
Unhelpful Italy). He is portrayed as a clumsy, adorable fun boy who has a passion for cooking.
Likewise, Italy has two best friends known as Japan and Germany. Japan is an introverted,
conservative and quiet boy while Germany is a serious hard worker. Together, they are known as the
real life alliance of the Axis Powers. What makes Hetalia different from other anime shows are its
talented voice actors, huge fan base and its educational aspects.
Unlike many other anime shows, the voice actors of Hetalia bring a fresh, new perspective to the
world of voice acting with their outgoing personalities and creativity. What makes them such
talented voice actors are their former experiences with voice acting. In fact, many of them
previously voiced main characters in other popular animes! It despises me whenever when I watch
an anime and the voice actors are inexperienced with a voice as bland as

The Effects Of Whitewashing In Hollywood
Given that the media is such a major part of how we see the world, it is important to dig deeper into
the message it often portrays. In this day, televisions and cellphones are staple devices in every
household, making it a simple and speedy platform to influence individuals of all demographics.
Hollywood in particular has all the potential to provide positive and true portrayals of Asian culture
through their work but they continue to do the exact opposite in order to please American
viewership which leads to the whitewashing of the material. Race is sadly a factor that goes into
choosing the right person for a role and this is where whitewashing comes into play as white actors
are casted in roles that were originally meant for non–white actors. This can be seen in Hollywood
as early as the 1920's up to modern day America. This can have negative effects on our society and
the way we view each other due to misrepresentation and blatant disrespect towards cultures,
however it can also bring awareness and spark change due to the backlash it receives at the same
time.
. The practice of whitewashing is extremely prevalent and has become somewhat of a tradition
among Hollywood's many works. Hollywood has a long history of whitewashing that dates back as
early as 1919 in D.W. Griffith's film Broken Blossoms in which a white actor played the role of a
Chinese immigrant. Back then, whitewashing was overt and the roles were highly caricatured,
especially in the series of "Charlie

Essay on Anime in America
"Anime in America"
Anime, or Japanese animation, is a style of animation most recognizable by characters with large
eyes and beautifully detailed backgrounds. Once people watch anime, they will find besides
spectacular animation, anime has complex characters and deep stories, many of which teach morals
and values. Anime is very popular in Japan; it has also gained a following in America and is
beginning to hit the mainstream.
Anime is gaining popularity in the United States as it is shown more on television, most Noticeably
on the Sci–Fi Channel with shows such as Saturday Anime and during Anime week and on Cartoon
Network with shows such as Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z being shown every weekday during

Hime, Galaxy Express 999, Be Forever Yamato, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro,
Kiki's Delivery Service, and Grave of the Fireflies. When anime is translated into English, it can be
found in two forms, dubbed, where voice actors put the words spoken into English, or subtitled,
where the original dialogue is kept and the English equivalent is shown across the bottom of the
screen. Subtitled seems to keep more to what is actually being said, but some of the puns can be
hard to understand while dubbed canmake the dialogue make sense and sound funnier. In the end,
it's really just a matter of preference.
What makes anime so cool? It's really hard to describe, but yet thousands of people all across the
United States, who can't describe it they, attend cons and are members of clubs.
No one can really say what it could be––the amazing detail, fantastic stories, the complex plots, or
the unforgettable characters...It can be any of these. The growing popularity of anime in America
has resulted in a large number of anime clubs being founded on college campuses and increasingly
at high schools. Many clubs watch and discuss anime, produce newsletters or fanzines, have

Character Analysis Of The Hanging Garden By Toshiaki Toyoda
Based on the homonymous book by Mitsuyo Kakuta, Hanging Garden is Toshiaki Toyoda's best
movie to date.
The Kyobashis appear to be a regular family of four members: Eriko, the mother, retains a part time
employment in a restaurant, otherwise busying herself with housekeeping; Takashi, the father, is a
regular salary man; the two kids, Mana and Ko, 16 and 14 years old respectively, are students. What
makes the family special is that they have agreed, following an initiative of Etsuko's, not to have
any secrets from and always be sincere with each other. Presumably, this results into constant
awkward situations.
However, as the script deepens on the characters, the facade of regularity shutters. Takashi, who has
not had intercourse with his wife for five years, retains two extramarital relationships, with whom
he often engages in sadomasochistic acts, one of which is his spouse's colleague. The other one, at
some point, is hired by his son to tutor him, thus her regular visit at their home. Ko, clearly has
sexual inclinations towards her and even asks her to have intercourse with him. Mana, who rarely
attends school, spends her time shopping at the department store, getting photographed for adult
magazines and even having sex with strangers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Silver Linings Playbook
Silver Linings Playbook
The narrative of Silver Linings Playbook is formed in the heart of Philadelphia around a middle
class family at it's breaking point. Pat's, the protagonist, family has very much shaped his current
situation; he has clinical bipolar disorder and struggles with stress–induced manic outbursts. After
Pat's release from a mandated rehabilitation center, he handles the next recuperating stage of his life
in a similar way as a quarterback looking to make the next big play on the field; watching for
possible blitzes and passes, anything to get the ball into the end zone, or in Pat's case, to get in

Pat and Tiffany are flawed in ways that are more common in human nature than we discuss, or
would like to believe, and offer more depth to the audience than the overly–stereotyped flaws of
commitment phobia and unnecessary expression of feelings.
Silver Linings Playbook is shot through Pat's perspective in the present as he navigates his life after
he is released from a psychiatric rehab facility. Russell is able to tell the story of how Pat arrived at
the point he is at through flashbacks triggered by his wedding song and through visits with his court
appointed psychiatrist. The storyline bounces around from different aspects of Pat's life; problems at
home with his parents, his running back to Nikki and away from his new life, and dancing with
Tiffany. The audience is whirled around following it all, as if they too are a part of the obsessive
craziness that is overwhelming and raw in some moments and relaxed and comical in others. In
these ways, the mental illness aspect of the film that has completely shaken up Pat's life, is woven
through for the audience to understand, but is still not a glaring idea that is hard for people to grasp
or relate to.
Though the film itself strays from a typical romantic comedy, the structure of Silver Linings
Playbook does not. Romantic comedies usually center on a single person's development through the
assistance of their soon–to–be partner. The theme is stated within the first ten minutes; in this case,

Ancient Greek And Ancient Theater In Ancient Greece
Theater in Ancient Greece Back in ancient greece plays started out as a tribute honoring greece
gods, a god named Dionysia. Theater back then was very different from how it is for us today. Back
then only three people were allowed to perform onstage as time went on more silent acting parts
were being allowed. The limit of performers at a time was a real bummer for those looking to be
more involved in theater. Chous was becoming a lot more popular at the time because people were
looking for an alternative to somehow be involved in theater anyway they can. Audiences and
stadiums were so big at the time that in order to see an actor's face the masks that the actors wore
were very drastic. Mask making was a very clever art of its own because not only were they well
designed and exaggerated, but they were also made in such a way that the masks actually projected
the voice of the actors so people in the stadium could hear them. Now although this helped much the
stadiums were also cleverly constructed to project the actors voice as well as gestures, also made
very exaggerated so people could see. Medieval Time Plays In medieval times plays were very
different from today's standard play anyone can go see. There were also different kinds of plays
performed much like genres called today. There were different kinds of these genres one being

Acting And Then It's Just Not Acting Analysis
Stepping into the assignment I was immediately opted to google random quotes and find one that I
felt I could understand the best. Upon my scrolling I stumbled upon a quote by Johnny Depp. Yes,
Johnny Depp not Shakespeare or Marlow like most people would assume. The quote is: "With any
part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not
acting. It's lying." This quote struck me as intriguing and made me rethink my perspective on acting.
The main concept of the quote is to be yourself otherwise you are lying not only to yourself but to
your audience. The quote also sheds light on the concept discussed in class where we need to
represent parts of our personality in acting. We could try and mimic an actor but it would not be our
own work. After contemplating all of these meanings I began to brainstorm the numerous
possibilities of how his quote distinguishes acting skills and how it can be applied to daily life. ...

I visually see the actors in their characters and connect the two together. What I mean is I cannot
imagine anyone else as the joker besides Heath Ledger partly not only because of his acting skills
but the way he interpreted the joker. Depp's quote illustrates that it's important to show who you are
because it not only makes your acting better, but memorable. The audience goes in with certain
expectations. They except to be drawn into the play and moved by the pool of emotions a character
is displaying. If an actor's performance is not genuine and unique people will be disappointed. The
actor would be lying and also be a copycat. For example: if Chris Evans for some reason liked
Ledger's impression of the joker so much he decided to mimic it in a new batman movie the
audience would say "Hey he's trying to be just like Heath, we've seen this already! This is so

Even though most of the world knows him for being in Star Wars (which he will return later on in
December of this year when Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens), to those who watch
cartoons and play video games, he has had a steady & lucrative career as a voice actor. In particular,
Hamill has proven himself to be quite adept in villainous roles (most notably The Joker in Batman

What Is The Kirishima Thing Essay
There was a big sensation in Japan when a writer Suzuki Shou published his book School caste in

class. In his book, he reports that this system operates to all students and decides their status in
class. This neologism spread throughout Japan, driving media to produce plenty of pieces reflecting
it. "The Kirishima Thing," directed by Daihachi Yoshida is also about 'school caste system' in
modern Japan society. Unlike other classroom dramas focusing on the most popular guy– Kirishima
in this movie, this movie spotlights the bystanders of Kirishima by not showing him at all. Through

To what extent do traditional Noh masks express the personality of the lead characters such as Lady
Aoi, Hikaru and Jasko in the play Aoi No Ue?
Introduction
The NOH theatre
Noh theatre is derived form Japanese language as a word for skill or talent, so the full translation on
English is a talented theatre . Noh is a Japanese form of theatrical art that has been transferred
through the generations and it also has been marked as one of the oldest theatre arts in Japan , and
even the world. Unesco has designated the Noh theatre as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage" . Noh is
an art form, which has some elements of drama, music and dancing. While NOH theatre is
compared to western opera, the differences can be quite immense. Due to the use of masks in Noh
plays, one can call Noh theatre a "mask theatre" .

Farewell My Concubine Essay
The 1993 movie directed by Kaige Chen, Farewell My Concubine, addresses the Chinese political
issues during the war against Japan via interpersonal issues of an opera troupe of young male actors.
The movie is as long as it is engaging. With two orphan boys who are raised to act in an Opera for
their entire lives, dedication obtains a whole new meaning. Dieyi's training to act as a woman and to
reflect femininity in his whole life increases the dissension that is observed within the film as well
as its connections to the politics of China. The use of ghastly sound effects, close–up
cinematographic techniques, and military involvement combine together in this movie to create a
devastatingly dramatic experience.

and this is evident later in the movie. With such words like these in times of poverty and war,

she blind–folds him.
Initially, Douzi's does not react normally to his hand injury, but later releases his emotions. Before
his finger is chopped, subliminal cues are used to imply what will happen. For example: A knife

Even though the young boys have to endure physical and emotional pain as members of the troupe,

Lately, in today society, anime are being dubbed faster than the past. Usually, it takes about a year

why I prefer Japanese version than the English dubbed version. I prefer subtitle anime because I
only wait once a week for a new episode, it contains the original context and it helps me learn more

art, food, hot spring, tea ceremony, and much more that would peak anyone interested. I was into
learning the Japanese culture when I first started watching anime. Watching anime is one of my
hobbies. It is an animation produced in Japan. A few years ago, when a new anime is released, it
takes time for the dubbed version to be uploaded. Depending on how popular the anime is or how
demanding the fans are, the release dubbed version could take up to 3 months or more. It also
depends on many episodes there are, which could take months or years to complete it. For example,
the dubbed version of Hunter X Hunter (one of my favorite anime) had just begun last year and it is
being aired on Toonami every Saturday at 1 am. The show is currently in episode 72, while the

This mixture of testimonies from the victims' children, interviews with experts on the subject, actual

documentary benefits the most by Kajioka's editing (along with his assistants, Gryff Bevan, Toshiya

Theatre History Ancient Greece In ancient Greece the Theatres were split in 3 major parts. The
Orchestra, The Skene or stage, and then the main theatre segment which was called the Koilon. The

the middle of the Orchestra, the Thymeli was used as an altar and later was were the chorus stood.
The side of the Skene faced the audience serving as a background. The Skene had as many as three

A pack of mangy mutts joins him on an adventure to locate his missing dog. Wes Anderson is no
stranger to stop–motion having directed Fantastic Mr. Fox which was charming and gorgeously
rendered. But with the Isle of Dogs virtually everything about the technique has been improved
while 3d animation has reached stunning new heights hand drawn and stop motion will always hold
a special place in my heart there's a rough around the edges feel to almost every shot it's obvious
that a painstaking amount of hard work has gone into each and every single frame. Alexandre des
plots score propels the film along with a steady pace creating a surprising amount of suspense as
well. Some scenes were actually riveting and a lot of that can be attributed to his wonderful music in
typical Wes Anderson style the actors are almost self–aware in their delivery. The line readings feel
idiosyncratic of the stars themselves. Almost as if Anderson is knowingly allowing the actors' public
persona to seep through. For instance, every line from Bill Murray or Jeff Goldblum feels almost
tailor–made for them for their style. This can sometimes be a distraction but a minor one in Bryan
Cranston's performance as chief of the stray

Essay on Kabuki and Bunraku Art
As we know, Japanese culture is ancient, rich and assorted. It is considered a millennium culture,
with lots of traditions and beliefs that make it very attractive. These traditions and beliefs are
expressed, among other ways, through the performing arts, as: theatre, cinema, ballet, dance, etc.
which somehow express the identity of the Japanese people. Within these performing arts we can
find to BUNRAKU and KABUKI which belong to this kind of art, but they are two expressions
very different from each other.
Concerning the set in scene, Bunraku consists in puppets which are handled each one by three
people, who are behind the puppets and move them with the right hand from one side to another on
the stage. In contrast, in Kabuki the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are lots of attempts, on the wife's side, to get along with her husband. But everything ends up
in a negative way, with the suicide of the husband. On the other hand, Kabuki´s plot point out
the relationship between parents and children, about the problem that exist when parents ignore to
their children and don't give them the attention that the children need. This is represented by a fox
which is obsessed with a drum. We can see a beautiful woman knocking this drum and ignoring the
presence of the fox. Unlike Bunraku, Kabuki has a happy end, where parents and children achieve
to be in touch.
Concerning the training of the actors; in Bunraku they have to have, at least, ten years of experience
in the management of the puppets. This is the reason of the skill in the so natural movements of
these puppets that amaze to everybody. To reach this purpose, these actors have to practice around
three hours per day. On the other hand, Kabuki requires from the actors a physical training, a kind of
circus training, because they have to make many jumps from different places on the stage. To do
this, they have to have a balanced diet, low in calories. The practice of the exercises must be at least
four days per week.
Both Bunraku and Kabuky make use of the voice resource, so the actors have to create a voice and a
way of speak for every character; but in Bunraku there are only human characters, in the case of
Kabuki, the

Japanese Women Research Paper

  • 1. Japanese Women Research Paper The signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2 September 1945, aboard the deck of USS Missouri marked Japan's unconditioned surrender to the Allies, officially drawing an end to the Second World War (Weber, 1997). Indeed it was the end of the Second World War, for the Japanese people to 'begin a new life', an encouragement for Japan to rebuild, for the society to restructure, also a new age for a Japanese woman's position in the Japanese society to be re–evaluated. In this essay, I explore the status of the Japanese women between the pre–war period and the post–war period, as well as hope to address the areas of discrimination that could be observed from the pre– modern times and in the contemporary society. In the pre–war period, all social classes including merchant, court ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Actresses or female spokesperson must smile to their male co–characters, an act set to represent their feminine gender characters, which is women support or men; while male characters must not smile, in order to highlight their competence and serious behaviour at work (Arima, 2003). It illustrates that Japanese advertisers and producers allocate gender stereotypic actions to actors according to socially desirable gender traits, for example, females must smile because they are expected to serve and they have good interaction skills; while males must not smile, but instead they are expected to showcase their abilities (Inoue & Ebara, 1995; Arima, 2003). This brought me to ponder that in parallel to an individual's gender stereotype role and imagined identities, everyone is categorised according to the society's value judgements and prejudice, based upon his or her functionality within the contemporary social hierarchy; with that women will forever remain inferior to ... • 2. Persuasive Essay On Acting In Hollywood "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a question that children get asked quite frequently. Most of the time, a child aims big and chooses an extravagant career, like an astronaut, a police officer, or a doctor. Obviously, it is impossible for a child to obtain one of those jobs at such a young age. However, acting in Hollywood is a possible career for a child. If a child is talented enough to be a star, then why not let them pursue their passion? While the life of being an actor in Hollywood seems like a dream to most children, fame comes with many terrible obstacles for some stars. Over the years, there has been a large debate on whether or not acting in Hollywood as a child is as picture–perfect as it seems. Hollywood is filled with tons of secrets. Why should a child be put into such an untrustworthy environment? Acting in Hollywood is in no way safe for children. News outlets are full of stories about former child stars who have gone "wild." Some stars develop destructive partying habits at a young age. How do young, innocent stars learn about the use of drugs and alcohol? They are invited to big Hollywood parties where they are introduced to substances that lead to addiction. During adolescence, a child is still learning who they are and love to experiment. Experimentation is healthy for a young mind, but substances like drugs and alcohol can affect a developing mind negatively. Addiction is a tough obstacle to overcome, but it is even more difficult to defeat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Japanese Kabuki : The Golden Age Japanese Kabuki is an art form involving both style and drama to excite a compelling story. Izumo No Okuni, the founder of kabuki, derives the name "[beginning] with the characters for "song" and "dance," while the word's final character suggests the actor's talent" (D'Etcheverry 21). The early 1600s were when Japanese kabuki theatre came to light and spread across the nation like a wildfire. Yet it still had not reached its peak until the late 1600s to mid 1800s also known as The Golden Age. Kabuki evolved and the style changed but kept at its roots by entertaining through its visual prowess. Moving forward into the Modern Era, The Cold War was the crisis at hand, and kabuki was questioned because it was a Japanese art form. Kabuki has remained a difficult theatre to maintain throughout the ages but Japanese Kabuki through its origin, The Golden Age, and modern era evoke both emotion and entertainment through the use of elaborate technology and showmanship. Kabuki started off in the year 1603 and was founded by a woman which at the time was very unusual. Izumo No Okoni was never thought to be a name to remember before, until her art form captured the hearts of many in the later era. She led a troupe and first performed on a dry riverbed bed in Kyoto ("Kabuki Theatre of Japan"). They performed very erotic and outlandish dances. Having women entertainers was also very unusual at the time especially because women would play the roles of women, but even men. This sparked a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Stanislavski's Expectations Of Acting As The Imitation Of... Acting, known by most as the imitation of life. Many theorists have gone to extreme lengths to try to recreate the behaviors of man in everyday life, whether it be Stanislavski's method of using past experiences, Chekhov's technique of imagining a situation, or naturalism's use of the environment. But there are some that deny this goal of acting, they believe theatre can be so much more when it isn't bound to the restraints of imitation. Tadashi Suzuki was one such man, who believed the goal of acting should not be to be realistic, but for the actor to use all means necessary to convince the audience of a truth. In order to do this, the actor must have complete control of his body, achieved through following the Suzuki Method. In the year 1939, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These experiences are capable of causing a relatively large amount of pain to the actor, and they must use all of their invisible capabilities as much as they can in and in unison order to try to avoid as much pain as possible. The impossibility of this method's requirements raises the goal to perfection, leaving failure as the only possible outcome. No actor has or will ever be able to master the Suzuki Method of Acting, because it's not meant to be mastered, it raises the actor to his maximum potential, and leads the actor to always strive to be even better. This can be reflected through the exercises, many actors, while doing the exercises, tend to notice faults in their acting, and correct them, without even needing the guide of a teacher. There are more specific goals that are used to help guide the actor in his training. The actor must understand the different way in which the feet contact the floor, which stems from nō, where the atmosphere is created through the placement of the feet. The actor must keep the upper body free, but strong, not disregard it and only focus on the lower body, because it would disrupt the center of gravity. • 5. Characteristics Of Torakku Yaro 6. Torakku Yaro (10 films, 1975–1979) Norifumi Suzuki and Bunta Sugawara have already become famous, particularly through the plethora of exploitation films they worked in. As the genre started to lose its appeal, major studios turned to romantic comedies with some elements of action. Torakku Yaro, with the first directing and the second starring, was one of the most successful. Sugawara plays Momojiro Hoshi, a truck driver who drives around Japan, along with his colleague Kinzo Matsushita. All ten of the films follow a similar formula. Zatoichi (27 films, 1962–2003) This particular title became globally known to the public through Takeshi Kitano's 2003 movie, "The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi". However, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Before Kitano's movie, there have been 26 more. Let us take things from the beginning though. Our hero's first appearance was in a small story by Kan Shimozawa, titled Zatoichi, although the concept, as a whole, was based on a secondary character of this story, a blind gambler. He could guess what the dice would bring almost every time. According to the Library of Congress, the story was included in a book titled Futokoro Techo, which was first published in Japan by Chuo Koronsha in 1961. The idea to write a Zatoichi movie came from Shintaro Katsu, who came to be the man behind the hero, since he was the leading actor in all of the initial 26 movies (and director in the last) and also in the TV series. The production company that took on the project was Daiei Studios. The films were set during the Tokugawa era, where, except for some samurai that were under government service, the rest of the samurai were forbidden to carry any weapon. Despite the large number, how many of them are Asian? How many Asian entertainers can you name off the top of your head? Of course there is Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Lucy Liu, and Brenda Song, but that is only four performers. Now count how many Caucasian entertainers you can name. It is probably significantly higher than the first number. Does the ratio of people reflect the diversity of America? Now more than ever the voices of the people can be heard through protests or petitions or popular social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter (Huq 81). Criticisms and protests against certain roles and movies can be seen from virtually anywhere in the world. For example, the movie Ghost in the Shell received a lot of criticism based on the fact that most of the cast was not Asian despite the fact that the original source material was set in a futuristic–steampunk Tokyo comprised of Japanese characters. This prompted a statement from the authors of the original source material stating that they were okay with Caucasian actress Scarlett Johansson playing the protagonist Motoko Kusanagi (Lachenal). Is it really okay to leave it like this though? Is it alright to just drop the argument because the creator says so? I think not. An argument cannot be left alone only because the creator says to especially because of the nature of the topic of race and ethnicity. Kusinagi should have been played by a Japanese actress instead of a Danish actress feeding again to the whitewashing Asian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Fragile Dream Fragile Dream is a Nintendo Wii Japanese role play game created by Kentarou Kawashima. It is a beautiful game that deals with the loneliness of the main character Seto. Seto is an apocalyptic world, where he tries to find survivors of this catastrophic earthquake. He is told by his grandfather that there are survivors at this red tower. Does he find those survivors or is he just wasting his time and life to find people that are not alive? What does this video game offer to the video game industry? The game was released in Japan on January 22, 2009 and was released to America on March 16, 2009. The main character Seto is voiced by the famous voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch. The game starts off with Seto trapped in his grandfather's star lab. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... IGN reviews the game and had mixed emotion on it. The reviewer said Fragile Dreams is a great example of a spectacular concept whose execution could have used a little more thought and time (Casamassina 7). I love the premise, the setting, some of the characters, and the production values (Casamassina 7). The story is engrossing. Exploring the lush, beautiful environments in search of clues is fun (Casamassina 7). The flashlight controls and effects are impressive (Casamassina 7). Even combat, in dire need of a lock–on, is functional (Casamassina 7). It does have a lot going for it, and you'll see that reflected in the scores below. I do agree with this review about all this. The game is very lush and has beautiful environment. • 8. Directing Courses For Exploration With The Body And Voice I believe it is essential that acting and directing courses provide room for exploration with the body and voice both discretely and within the context of more traditional scene work. I believe in offering several forms of technique rather than one method that "must" be followed without room for questioning, self–assessment, and thoughtful critique. I approach director training and new works creation together, combining traditional directing, Viewpoints and composition work, and new works creation as series of inquiries addressing those practices pivotal in developing directors: finding the essence of the story and cultivating deep listening, focus, and an awareness of time and space. As a creator and teacher of movement–based theatre, I believe it is crucial for student actors and directors to cultivate a personal relationship to space, time, and their own bodies. In order for students to move beyond the phase of trying to get something "right" and into thinking critically about creation and the storytelling potential of movement, I stress the importance of laboratory exploration. The goal is the journey, the investigation, the experimentation, and the increasing knowledge of self. I encourage fearlessness. And I remind my students "there is no such thing as a bad movement: we are investigating and creating, not judging." To begin to utilize the body for theatrical creation, the first and foremost task is the development of awareness of self and awareness of space. I use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. What Is The Role Of Kabuki Kabuki (歌舞伎) presents one of the most popular forms of traditional theatre in Japan with roots tracing back to the Edo Period. The root of the word "kabuki" presents its definition clearly as it contains three Chinese characters: "ka" means song, "bu" means dance and "ki" means prostitute. Hence kabuki is the combination of music, dance and dialogues. The inventor of kabuki is one of the dancers of Shinto temple, Okuni in 1603. Therefore kabuki used to be acted only by women till 1629. It involves elaborately designed costumes, eye–catching make–up, outlandish wigs, and arguably most importantly, the exaggerated actions performed by the actors. Nowadays this form of performance is spread all over the world especially in European and Western countries. In the beginning women were active players of kabuki, but gradually it caused moral corruption in the theatre. The government prevented women from taking part as actresses to elevate kabuki`s level from sensuality to spirituality. As the result young men were replaced instead of women for playing the feminine roles. This group of men was titled as Wakashu. However it was not a proper solution since homosexuality appeared among actors. This absence of women was occurred in Shakespearian dramas too as they considered them socially inferior with no right to participate in public activities. James. R. Brandon and Samuel .L. The kabuki term`s homonym, "kabukimono" means the people who wore strange costumes and passed the streets proudly, in the same way kabuki actors used odd cloths and make ups according to their characters. • 10. Realism Can Be Made For Realistic Actors Having learnt all this, applications to realism can be made. One interpretation of the structure of Kabuki plays is to have a change in posture and physical behavior throughout the performance, showing progression in the character through their body, and after the character has endured all the trials of the story, the actor demonstrates the character's ultimate control over themselves and their surroundings. The postures in Kabuki relate to the postures people utilize to reflect who they are. There is one complication, however, and that is its lack of precise detail, for as Suzuki explains, the method can merely be evoked from the outside, true understanding only comes from experiencing his discipline (Suzuki ix). First an examination of the Theory of Acting he created, which is the heart of the method, specifically the idea of the invisible body. The invisible needs compose the invisible body, "the most important of which are (1) energy production, (2) breath calibration and (3) center of gravity control" (Suzuki Company of Toga). These needs cannot be seen, but are just as essential as our physical needs. Just as the physical body endures training, so must the invisible body, and in unity, since these needs are connected to each other. As the actor trains their physical body, they become increasingly aware of the invisible body. The Suzuki Method is a series of exercises that over time, help the actor gain a higher sense of control over their body. The stronger their control is, the higher variety of movements they can execute, the finer their acting is. Forming the basis of the Suzuki Method is the grammar of the feet. The feet are considered so crucial to the method, that not even the arms and hands are as crucial, since they can only "augment the feeling inherent in the body positions established by the feet" (Suzuki). The animated character is not real therefore, it should not matter what race the person is (you're not actually seeing the person). Disney mainly focus on making sure that the actors voice suits the character he is playing, they don't care about the ethnicity of the person. I agree with them because all that matters is if the film is good. It does not matter how diversified the acting crew is. In response to this term, I have always laughed and playfully denied it, but inwardly cringed at the statement. The slang term Oreo – black on the outside, white on the inside (in terms of race)– is mainly used to describe African American men and women who do not behave in a way that is commonly thought of as "black", instead behaving in a way that is "befitting a white person". Unlike the chorus, he is a single person with a voice of his own. Furthermore, unlike the narrator in the Japanese puppet theatre, he is visible. Unlike both, Hamlet seems to impose his story both on the players and on the audience. In this sense, his subjectivity intrudes on the illusion of objective representation. We know that many actors being famous for such or such a role become confused with the character they once represented. On stage, as on the screen, the actor's self is absent to make present the character's self. This absence secures the illusion of identification between the character and the actor. This identification is not a one–way process. Indeed, as the actor acquires the name, the words and the acts of the character, s/he gives him/her his/her physical features (appearance, voice, etc.). This applies also to theatrical props and other theatrical devices. Narration, on the contrary, does not provide for such illusions. Oral narration, nevertheless, retains a certain amount of theatricality. Yet, unlike theater, it relies not on the illusion of presence, but on the illusion of continuity. • 14. Analysis Of ' Inuyasha ' And ' Othello ' When I was first exposed to Japanese culture, it came through the guise of a popular anime called InuYasha. I was fascinated by the attention to detail and the intricate ways in which the Japanese had woven a tale of death, reincarnation, love, and tragedy into the mold of good versus evil. Most fascinating was the candid role blackness played in constructing the dichotomy between the protagonist (InuYasha) and antagonist (Naraku). Continuously shrouded in darkness the main antagonist, Naraku, embodied the epitome of evil, suspicion, wonder, exoticism and fear which gives small glimpses into the far–reaching effects of blackness embedded in Japan today. InuYasha and the portrayals of blackness in other anime like it, encouraged me to wonder about the effects subversive historical conceptualizations of blackness have on portrayals of African Americans. I began this study with a memory from my adolescents to implicate the importance of understanding "blackness" in contemporary Japanese culture, which grants conflicting views of "blackness" as it is redefined in popular culture. In conducting this study, I want to understand what these representations will mean for African Americans, specifically women, who go to reside in Japan. The manner in which the gender of female in Kabuki comes about is through the explicit commodification of the female person, this is seen as, "Denying real women representation in favor of a fictional construct favoring patriarchal values"5. The Power Amongst The Noh Theatre The word Noh is derived from the Sino–Japanese word for "skill" or "talent", which is exactly what theatre brings to an audience, whether it is a show off of Broadway that everyone knows and loves, or a local high school production of a new play or a world premiere no one has ever heard of. The Noh plays of Japan have been compared to the greatest of Greek tragedies for their meaningful, powerful poetry and splendidness of emotional intensity. The Noh Theatre is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the mid–14th century. "Stemming from the popular entertainments in Nara during the Heian period (794–1185), in conjunction with various ritual offering dances, Noh was created during the latter half of the Kamakura period (1185– 1333) and the early part of the Muromachi period 1336–1573" (Introducing the World of Noh). This old tradition of theatre is still relevant and can still be performed today. But what really brings towards the power amongst the Noh Theatre? Is it the costuming and the masks that the performers would often wear? Is it the design of the set and the plot of the story that makes plays so intriguing? Is it the sounds of the musical instruments played on–stage along with a chorus or underlying vocals to back things up? In this day, televisions and cellphones are staple devices in every household, making it a simple and speedy platform to influence individuals of all demographics. Hollywood in particular has all the potential to provide positive and true portrayals of Asian culture through their work but they continue to do the exact opposite in order to please American viewership which leads to the whitewashing of the material. The limit of performers at a time was a real bummer for those looking to be more involved in theater. Chous was becoming a lot more popular at the time because people were looking for an alternative to somehow be involved in theater anyway they can. Audiences and stadiums were so big at the time that in order to see an actor's face the masks that the actors wore were very drastic. Mask making was a very clever art of its own because not only were they well designed and exaggerated, but they were also made in such a way that the masks actually projected the voice of the actors so people in the stadium could hear them. This quote struck me as intriguing and made me rethink my perspective on acting. The main concept of the quote is to be yourself otherwise you are lying not only to yourself but to your audience. The quote also sheds light on the concept discussed in class where we need to represent parts of our personality in acting. We could try and mimic an actor but it would not be our own work. • 28. James Van Der Beek None other than Dawson himself from Dawson's Creek (i.e. James Van Der Beek) was tapped to give life to Pazu. To be frank, Van Der Beek's voice sounds completely wrong for the part of Pazu, largely because he sounds far too old for the part (he sounds as if he is playing the part in the way that a 14 to 16 year old boy would play it. In contrast, the original seiyuu (i.e. Japanese term for voice actor), Mayumi Tanaka, made Pazu sound as young as he appeared to be on–screen: that of an 11 or 12 year old boy. That having been said, his actual performance overall was excellent. When it came to inflection and emotion, he nailed the lines effectively and performed admirably. While not perfect, Van Der Beek did as well as he could, even though another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chronologically, this is the first time that Hamill has been in a Ghibli dub, but he was would eventually go on to be in Nausicaä. In this dub, however, Hamill half steals the show as Muska. Even though most of the world knows him for being in Star Wars (which he will return later on in December of this year when Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens), to those who watch cartoons and play video games, he has had a steady & lucrative career as a voice actor. In particular, Hamill has proven himself to be quite adept in villainous roles (most notably The Joker in Batman the Animated Series (BtAS) and Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender) and his performance as Muska is one more notch he can add on to that belt. He plays the role so perfectly, that every single moment his voice comes onscreen, you are looking at the character alone and are unaware of the fact that an English voice is dubbing over the original Japanese track. Hamill plays the insane obsession, the disgusting slickness, and the in–check erudition in spades all the way throughout. • 29. What Is The Kirishima Thing Essay There was a big sensation in Japan when a writer Suzuki Shou published his book School caste in 2012 describing school students' hierarchical relationship, dividing them depend on popularity in class. In his book, he reports that this system operates to all students and decides their status in class. This neologism spread throughout Japan, driving media to produce plenty of pieces reflecting it. "The Kirishima Thing," directed by Daihachi Yoshida is also about 'school caste system' in modern Japan society. Unlike other classroom dramas focusing on the most popular guy– Kirishima in this movie, this movie spotlights the bystanders of Kirishima by not showing him at all. Through non–linear narrative with lots of crosscutting editing, this movie shows the protagonist Hiroki's growing up from Kirishima's subordinated person to a central person of his own life. Patience was killing me more, than waiting for the latest episode. This is why I prefer Japanese version than the English dubbed version. I prefer subtitle anime because I only wait once a week for a new episode, it contains the original context and it helps me learn more about the language and the culture. Japan is an amazing culture that makes you want to visit at least once in your lifetime. Not only is Japan the country of anime but it also has its own sense of fashion, art, food, hot spring, tea ceremony, and much more that would peak anyone interested. I was into learning the Japanese culture when I first started watching anime. Watching anime is one of my hobbies. It is an animation produced in Japan. A few years ago, when a new anime is released, it takes time for the dubbed version to be uploaded. Depending on how popular the anime is or how demanding the fans are, the release dubbed version could take up to 3 months or more. It also depends on many episodes there are, which could take months or years to complete it. For example, the dubbed version of Hunter X Hunter (one of my favorite anime) had just begun last year and it is being aired on Toonami every Saturday at 1 am. The show is currently in episode 72, while the Japanese version is completed with 148 episodes since 2014. Instead of waiting for the new dub episode, just watch the ... This mixture of testimonies from the victims' children, interviews with experts on the subject, actual footage from the time, including photographs and a sound recording with Osako's voice, and scenes from Kitade's travels has a very informative but also quite entertaining outcome. In this fashion, the documentary benefits the most by Kajioka's editing (along with his assistants, Gryff Bevan, Toshiya Chimura and Kenji Kitajima Oliveras), who presents the shuffling of the above parts in an elaborate way, which keeps the documentary flowing, without ever letting it become tiresome. The small length of the film (approx 24 minutes) also moves in this direction, as is stripped of any unnecessary details. Yasuhiko Fukuoka music accompanies the various scenes nicely, despite the fact that, in some moments, it becomes a bit too dramatic.
