Cooper Industries Case

Cooper Industries, Inc.
1. If you were Mr. Cizik of Cooper Industries, would you try to gain control of Nicholson File
Company in May 1972?
2. What is the maximum price that Cooper can afford to pay for Nicholson and still keep the
acquisition attractive from the standpoint of Cooper? [Treasury Bills yielded 5.6% in May 1972.]
3. What are the concerns and what is the bargaining position of each group of Nicholson stockholders?
What must Cooper offer group in order to acquire its shares?
4. On the assumption that the Cooper management wants to acquire at least 80% of the outstanding
Nicholson stock and make the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nicholson s European distribution system could also be very helpful in expanding Cooper s sales in
Europe. As Cooper Industries sells more of their product to industry and Nicholson to the consumer
market by combining the companies they may be able to increase sales of both product lines to the
market segment they are weaker in.
2. FMV of Nicholson = $172,630,000
Per share value = $295.60
I was not able to come up with a valid firm value, as there was no information regarding how much
working capital will be increased by Nicholson over the next ten years, nor was there any information
available regarding how much capital expenditures would be increased. Capital expenditures were
assumed to equal depreciation and it was assumed working capital was not growing.
3.
H.K. Porter bought their shares with the intention of taking over Nicholson themselves, however as
they were unable to acquire enough shares to buy the company they are now looking to sell their
shares. They would obviously like to do this profitably if possible and their primary concerns are
therefore the price and liquidity. They are looking to get the most money out the stocks that they can
and so price is of primary importance in bargaining with them. However, they also want to be able to
quickly liquidate their stocks and so would prefer to receive cash. Though they have expressed that
convertible preferred stock would be acceptable as they know Cooper stock is stable and is easily

Potential Of Microbial Fuel Cells
Potential of Microbial Fuel Cells
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by the
catalytic and metabolic reactions of microorganisms. The microorganisms function as a catalyst in the
electron transfer between the electrodes. A MFC is just like any other fuel cell in its function which
can undergo a half cell reaction. A typical microbial fuel cell consists of anode and cathode
compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) permitting specific membrane. At the
anode, the organic matter or substrate is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons and
protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode through an external electric circuit, while protons are
transferred to the cathode through the membrane. Electrons and protons react in the cathode,
combining with oxygen to form water.
A simple REDOX reaction takes place in the fuel cell. The rate of the reactions can depend on the
internal resistance, bacteria, substrate, semi permeable membrane and electrode configuration. The
basic reactions that occur when microorganisms consume a substrate such as sugar in the presence of
O2 they produce CO2 and H2O. But, when oxygen is not present they produce CO2, H+ and e .
At Anode,
C12H22O11 +13H2O → 12CO2 + 48H+ + 48e−
At Cathode,
O2 + 4e− + 4H+ → 2H2O
The applications of MFC s are that, they can be used for electricity generation, bio hydrogen
production, wastewater treatment and bioremediation. While

Comparing The Real Inspector Hound And Deathtrap
In both The Real Inspector Hound and Deathtrap, the authors Tom Stoppard and Iva Levin,
respectively, use the play within a play to enhance the idea of reality as well as to suggest the power of
illusion over reality. In Tom Stoppard s The Real Inspector Hound, the two narratives become
entangled and nearly impossible to separate. The play begins with two distinct narrative arcs: the
action at Muldoon manor, the play within a play, and the two theater critics, Moon and Birdboot,
watching the play. However by the end of the play, Moon and Birdboot are literally caught up in the
drawing room murder mystery that they are supposed to be reviewing. Made to function within two
structural units, the characters acquire one identity in the outer play their real identities and another in
the inner play. However, the distinction between the identities, and, even, between the plays, ... Show

In it s entirety, Deathtrap is an illusion in which Clifford Anderson s play, like the actual play itself, is
entitled Deathtrap, and is also a one set, five character thriller. However, unlike a traditional play,
Myra is the sole audience member to Sidney Bruhl and Clifford Anderson s performance. Myra is
convinced of a reality where Bruhl is willing to kill Anderson in order to steal his script. But when
Anderson seemingly rises from the dead and apparently beats Bruhl to death, Myra, shocked and
terrified, drops dead of a heart attack. At this moment, Anderson declares that their plan has been
successful: Anderson s murder had been staged to shock and kill Myra. Anderson and Bruhl s mini
play created a false sense of reality to which Myra fell victim. This skewing of reality becomes the
basis for Deathtrap as a whole since Anderson and Bruhl s original illusion shape all of the following

The Equity Method of Accounting for Investments
Chapter 1 the equity method of accounting for investments Chapter Outline I. Three methods are
principally used to account for an investment in equity securities. A. Fair value method: applied by an
investor when only a small percentage of a company s voting stock is held. 1. Income is recognized
when dividends are declared. 2. Portfolios are reported at market value. If market values are
unavailable, investment is reported at cost. B. Consolidation: when one firm controls another (e.g.,
when a parent has a majority interest in the voting stock of a subsidiary or control through variable
interests (FIN 46R), their financial statements are consolidated and reported for the combined entity.

B. Payments made in excess of underlying book value can sometimes be identified with specific
investee accounts such as inventory or equipment. C. An extra acquisition price can also be assigned
to anticipated benefits that are expected to be derived from the investment. For accounting purposes,
these amounts are presumed to reflect an intangible asset referred to as goodwill. Goodwill is
calculated as any excess payment that is not attributable to specific accounts. For the year 2002 and
beyond, goodwill is no longer amortized. V. Deferral of unrealized gains in inventory A. Gains derived
from intercompany transactions are not considered completely earned until the transferred goods are
either consumed or resold to unrelated parties. B. Downstream sales of inventory 1. Downstream
refers to transfers made by the investor to the investee. 2. Intercompany gains from sales are initially
deferred under the equity method and then recognized as income at the time of the inventory s
eventual disposal. 3. The amount of gain to be deferred is the investor s ownership percentage
multiplied by the markup on the merchandise remaining at the end of the year. C. Upstream sales of
inventory 1. Upstream refers to transfers made by the investee to the investor. 2. Under the equity
method, the deferral process for unrealized gains is identical for upstream

Attitudes To Nature In Pre-Modern Europe Essay
To explore how attitudes to nature changed in early modern Europe, we must first understand how
nature was perceived in the pre modern era. This essay will look into the pre modern Christian
theological view, before exploring the early modern era that was largely shaped by the scientific
revolution and its most notable people, the use of metaphors. and religious ideas, such as the chain of
being.
Attitudes towards nature in the pre modern or medieval period, were largely based on Christian
theological views and Aristotelian science. Despite science and religion usually seen as complete
opposites, religion and God s plan were often considered the scientific explanation for many things,
including gravity. Aristotelian science was mainly governed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, unlike with the scientific revolution, the chain of being showed a better outlook on nature,
and also had a more religious element. The chain of being was one way of finding our place in the
universe, which was a common idea in both medieval and modern Europe. God and all his angels
were at the top of the chain, below which were humans, and then came all the animals followed by
plants. It was, once again, the idea that humans are superior to nature and that it is our rights as the
superior beings, to rule over and control nature. While the chain of being and the scientific revolution,
both view nature as something to be controlled and dominated over, the chain of being was less
anthropocentric, even though it still did see human s above nature, and nature as something to be used
for human s benefit. Despite this, the chain of being also gave importance to nature. The Great Chain
of Being placed people and nature in an intimate relationship (Porter 1946). This was due to every
single part of the chain being important, and to damage one link, would destroy the entire chain.
Therefore, humans would have to have some level of care for nature, to ensure our own

Odd Stories In The Bible
Throughout the Bible there are several stories that may seem odd and morally difficult to understand.
Although these stories appear to be much they all have a purpose and are trying to tell us something.
God works in mysterious ways, and these, odd, stories are where he began. These purposeful stories
consist of; Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac, Dinah s rape, and the Potiphar s wife sexually harassing
Joseph. Firstly, Abraham was promised by God that he was going to bless his family and make great
nations out of his descendants (Gen. 12:1 3). God first told Abraham this when he was commanded by
God to leave all that he knew to go live in an unknown land. Then, because Abraham trusted God and
followed his command he was enlightened in the fact that God was going to bless him with as many
descendants as there were stars (Gen. 15:5 6). Although, Abraham had no children at the time he
trusted God. But his wife, Sarah, had little faith, so she told Abraham to lay with her servant, Hagar,
so that he may have a child to inherit his land. Ishmael is born to Abraham from Hagar, but that wasn t
Gods plan, and it didn t end up making Sarah happy. Therefore, God reminded Abraham that he will
have many descendants, as for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall ... Show more content on

have done so if Gods angel wouldn t have stopped him (Gen. 22:1 18). Although Abraham didn t end
up actually sacrificing his only son, he would have because he knew that God knew what was best for
him. He had put his faith and trust in God for so long that he knew God had a plan and wouldn t allow

How to Overcome a Fear of Change Essay example
Thought processes and relationship dynamics are fundamental if change is to be successful. (Lynco
Assoc.) People fear change because it pushes them out of their comfort zone. One of the greatest fears
in the world is the fear of the unknown. Although fear can create a large amount of energy in a person,
you can choose to use that energy in a positive manner and take control of the situation. Focus on your
convictions; be confident in your abilities and be proud of the work that you do. Do not allow
insecurities to damage your focus. Only you can set your moral compass.
Make an effort to see change as an opportunity to grow in a different direction and develop new
strengths and insights regardless of external influences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Encourage an open dialog with your workers about any concerns they may have about their
responsibilities and performance; respect their privacy and do not postpone giving praise; make your
employees feel they are part of the system by asking for suggestions or solutions. If you apply these
changes consistently, they will reap rewards in the way your workers perform and the way they
perceive you. People want to be treated honestly and fairly. Even if there is bad news concerning the
company, share that with your employees as soon as possible. Do not let them hear it on the street. The
proverbial grapevine is very efficient. through the media. The more your employees know they can
trust and respect you, the better a company you will have (Sykes. n.d.).
The intrinsic rewards of a project are often more important than the material rewards and recognition.
I think there is more value in trying to engage people than reward them (Sky. N.d.). The word reward
implies a hierarchy and you would not reward a superior. You would not reward a friend. You reward
those beneath you and thus a reward is a subtle reminder of their position.
If you really want to your staff to put out their best efforts, do not try to do so by buying their
enthusiasm.
I think it is a mark of a leader to encourage feedback from his reports. Make it an opportunity for
exchange of information and ideas and you may be surprised. You may have an employee who
thought his opinion

6. I would recommend that the managers for Hallstead Jewelers reevaluate their cost allocation in
respect to the size of their new store. Along with that, it is important for Hallstead to eliminate their
commissions cost. I would recommend increasing Hallstead s advertising costs because they are still
spending the same amount on advertising as they did when they were in the old, smaller store. To start
off, I would recommend to increase their advertising by the percentage increase in their new store
size: 50%. Also, Hallstead s should consider adding internet advertising to increase its market size.
This may be an opportunity for cheap advertising. The sales commission is an unnecessary cost that is
not practiced by Hallstead s competitors. The managers should take away this variable cost to increase
profitability. By making these changes, adding promotions and advertisement, taking away an
unnecessary variable cost this would increase profitability and pull Hallstead s out of its declining

Trait Oriented Personality And Personality Traits
Trait Oriented Personality Trait oriented personality theorists suggest that personality is an internal
trait is born and breed within the individual. Gordon Allport a psychologist categorized the excess of
40,000 words in the dictionary that describe personality traits in 1936. Allport separated these
personality traits into cardinal traits, central traits and secondary traits. These traits each affect the
individual in different ways throughout their life. Cardinal traits dominate throughout a lifetime such
as an individual is boisterous. Central traits Allport theorizes these traits develop overtime as each
individual develops their own moral compass, intelligent, honest and shy all would be considered
central traits according to Allport s theory. Allport s final category is called secondary traits these traits
pertain to limited situations and are predictable to similar situations however can be out of character
for an individual s day to day life, for instance, getting stuck in unpredicted traffic that causes one to
be very late and take an unexplained amount of time to dissipate. This traffic situation may cause a
usually calm individual to act irrational, this behavior is likely to occur in other unpredictable situation
such as long lines and large crowds. Sixteen Personality Factors Building upon or perhaps I should say
paring down Allport s theory Raymond Cattell reduced the more than four thousand personality traits
identified by Allport.

Analysis Of The Minister s Black Veil By Nathaniel Hawthorne
The short story The Minister s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne follows the minister Mr. Hooper
whose simple change in appearance alters the very nature of his existence in society till his death.
While his decision to begin to wear a black veil over his face ostracizes him from society, it also turns
him into a more influential clergyman. With the symbolism of the black veil, Hawthorne makes a
statement on the involvement of society in personal matters and the black veil that is present over the
heart of every man, making the point that everyone is guilty of being sinful.
The Minister s Black Veil was first published in 1832 and was written during the American Romantic
time period. Romanticism was a time period where emotion and ... Show more content on

Hooper for his reason for donning the black veil: no attempts were made...to discover the secret which
[the veil] was supposed to hide (6). Hawthorne portrays society s obsession with that which they do
not know for sure or cannot understand. Hawthorne portrays the townspeople in this way to convey
how people can often be involved in matters not concerning them so much so that they often pass
judgements that may not be just. In Mr. Hooper s case, the townspeople are so invested in analyzing
his black veil that they allow themselves to be affected by his veil so much that they fear him and his
veil, and they even avoid him, all the while not considering how they might be wrong as they are not
entirely different from Mr. Hooper. Symbolism is very prominent throughout the entire short story.
The color black typically symbolizes evil, darkness, and sin. The black veil which conceals the
minister s features, with its negative connotation, is representative of sin. The fact that it is a veil,
which traditionally has a purpose is to conceal one s face, implies that the minister s black veil
symbolizes secret sin. Hawthorne uses this symbolism to imply that man is inherently sinful; if a
minister could potentially guilty of sin, so can others. For the townspeople, the black veil has various
possible meanings. While many townspeople guess at its significance‒some of the townspeople

Treating Pain In Patients With A History Of Substance...
Building Trust with the Audience When it comes to creating a solid argument on something highly
controversial it has to appear professional, well written, and informed. The article Treating Pain In
Patients With a History Of Substance Addiction: Case Studies And Review by Megan and Andrew
Harding does just this despite a few minor flaws. Without reading the article the audience can deduce
a clear sense of seriousness and professionalism. Now some may question how on earth can this be
deduced without reading it. But it s because of the simple consistent format. Each section has a bolded
subtitle that bluntly says what this section is about. Beneath this subtitle is a horizontal line and then

Though the patients and parents are not the target audience and compromising to this demographic

They also chose to write the article in a passive voice so words such as I, you, or we but rather he, she,
or their were not included. Which is true to how nurses have to document helping build the trust of the
intended audience. The sentences are fairly long with about 20 words per sentence. Using the Flesch

because again this is intended for nurses who have to complete at least an associate s degree. Looking
at the reading level I m surprised I was able to read it fairly painlessly though every once and while it
was difficult due to passive voice. The article isn t completely made of their own information. It was
well researched using various references. The article very rarely directly quotes its sources it normally
paraphrases the information then adds a superscript with the number corresponding to the citation. The
article didn t use APA or MLA formatting instead it uses CMS which is odd for a nursing article. CMS
is normally used in history and fields of humanities so it sort of makes sense though nursing normally
falls under science leaning more articles to be APA. The journal this article was published in

How Does Legalizing Abortion Work
Does Legalization of Abortion Work?
The word abortion by definition means the induced expulsion of a fetus from the womb before it is
able to survive independently. Some country, abortion became legal because an authority thought that
the legalized abortion would be work and solve a problem in society. In the United States, the
legalized abortion was used since 1973. After legalized abortion used, there is an extremely
controversial issue because while some people are completely against it, others believe that a woman
should have the right to choose. In my opinion, the legalization of abortion should be banned because
it has increased crime rates, child abuse, furthermore, dramatically changed sexual relationships.
The first reason why the legal abortion should be banned is it increased crime rates, instead, reduced
crime rates. In 2001 John Donohue and Steven Levitt, economists, was published a research about the
effect of legalized abortion on crime. They claimed that the legalized abortion unexpectedly lowered
crime rates and their finding indicates that crime in the United States started to decline in 1992. Later,
in 2005 Levitt and Dubner was published a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reflection Of A Interview With The Algebra Interview...
For the student interview, I interviewed a 9th grade boy and used the Algebra Interview questions.
When we started the interview the boy was very apprehensive. I assured him it was not a test, and not
much writing was required. He slowly started to relax. I read the first question (1a) out loud and had
barely finished when he gave me the answer. His mental math was in high gear despite his initial
apprehension. I proceeded to the next question (1b) with the same result. He provided an answer
quickly to this question as well. I was beginning to wonder if this was going to be too easy for him, so
I asked him to write down and explain his thinking so I could understand how he got the answers. For
number (1a), he explained that he multiplied 6 by 3 because Alice ate 6 ounces of cake and she grew 3
feet for each ounce of cake that she ate. He then added the product of 36 to her original height of 4 and
came up with the answer of 40 feet. For (1b), he modeled a different approach where he started with
16 feet and subtracted 4 increments of 3 until he arrived at Alice s original height of 4 feet. He told me
that he knew that he needed to get to the base height, and that is why he used subtraction. He did it in
increments of 3 as he knew that Alice grew 3 feet/ounce of cake. For question (2) he again used
mental math and came to the conclusion that it was 4 feet/ounce of water. His rationale was the same
as for (1b), to get back down to the base height. At this point, it

Analysis Of When You Are Old By William Butler Yeats
William Butler Yeats texts have become more valued over time as they have explored difficult and
lasting concepts that relate to the human condition across time frames. The ideas include; unrequited
love, chaos and change, and death. These ideas are explored throughout his 3 poems When you are old
written in 1893, The Second Coming written in 1919 and An Irish airman foresees his death written in
1918. Yeats wrote, When you are Old when he was 28 and the poem talks about his unrequited love
for Maude Gonne. An Irish airman foresees his death was written during WW1, where death was
occurring all over. The Second Coming was written after WW1 when Yeats thought that the European

Chaos and change are inescapable and it cannot be controlled, directed or even contained. The Second
Coming was written as a reaction to the chaos and changes due to WW1 and Ireland s movement into
the post colonial stage. The poem states Yeats political views and worries that the people who hold
power are driving the country towards mere chaos, thus revealing his desire for stability. Yeats uses a
metaphor, Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world , implying
that the world is heading towards chaos. It is also referencing political implications and the changes
that have released mere anarchy upon the world. Even though Yeats desires stability, his own cynical
mindset stops him from believing that stability is achievable as the Second Coming is occurring. The
bleak and gloomy tone of the The Second Coming demonstrates the negativity caused by the changes
and chaos possibly foreshadowing death created by the second coming. The Second Coming is a text
that has definitely become more valued over time as it challenges common ideas such as war and what
is the point of war, which many people think all the time. It is very relevant throughout humanity as it
endures commonly thought of ideas.

The Lives Of Lee Boyd Malvo And John Allen Muhammad
D.C. Snipers

Wiregrass Technical College
Abstract
The purpose of this research paper is to examine the lives of Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen
Muhammad. They are known as the D.C. Snipers who initiated a killing spree that lasted over 20 days
and resulted in 10 deaths and 3 injuries. This paper gives insight into the manipulation and control of
John Allen Muhammad over Lee Boyd Malvo who was child during this reign of terror. Information is
given to aid in understanding the contributing factors that led to innocent lives taken from society, the
loss innocence of a minor, and the molding and shaping of a cold blooded killer.
D.C. Snipers Children are the most precious human beings on the Earth. They represent such a pure
and innocence of mankind. They are to be loved, nurtured, molded, and trained by their parents to be
law abiding citizens and good moral and responsible adults. However, what happens when this does
not happen? When innocence is turned into evil, what is the result? When children are not exposed to
model parents and influenced by others who do not have their best interest in mind, society gains
troubled children who have the potential to become dangerous and unstable. This is the case of the
making of Lee Boyd Malvo: The D.C. Sniper. Lee Boyd Malvo was a child in 2002 when terror struck
and our nation was in fear (Albarus, 2012). Lee was manipulated and brainwashed by an adult figure

experiment, we must first understand what viscosity is. Viscosity is the quantity that describes a fluid s
resistance to flow .1 It is essentially fluid friction and transforms kinetic energy of motion into heat
energy, just as friction ( the force between surfaces in contact that resists their relative tangential
motion ) does between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This equation is not a law of nature, but a reasonable first approximation. Liquids such as water and
some gases fit this criterion and are called Newtonian fluids. Water is an example of a Newtonian fluid
because, no matter how fast it is stirred or mixed, it still exemplifies properties of a fluid. When
stirring or mixing a non Newtonian fluid a hole is left behind. It may also become thinner and more
viscous. Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille was interested in the flow of human blood and formulated
Poiseuille s Law. He made a series of tubes to test uniform viscous liquids in. These successfully
modeled the blood flow in capillaries and veins, flow through a drinking straw, air flow in lung
alveoli, or through a needle. The equation he used was: [pic] where: ΔP is the pressure drop L is the
length of pipe μ is the dynamic viscosity Q is the volumetric flow rate r is the radius π is pi
In order to form a hypothesis of which fluid has the highest viscosity, we must also have knowledge of
each fluid we will test. Corn syrup is glucose syrup that is made from cornstarch. The viscosity and
sweetness of it depends on the amount of hydrolysis it undergoes. It is most commonly used as a
thickener, a sweetener, and in maintaining a food s freshness. Honey

Abortion And The Effect On Crime Rate
Abortion and the Effect on Crime Rate
When you take a glance at the two relating topics of abortion and crime rate, there are going to be
several credible sources that will have plenty of data that will either support the claim or prove the
claim wrong. With the peculiar comparison of crime and abortion, we look at what authors Steven D.
Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner writes in their book Freakonomics and what Dr. Brian Clowes, director
of education and research at Human Life International, writes in his article Does Abortion Really
Reduce Crime? . The most significant debate contrasting among the two sources is if abortion is the
cause of the diminishment of the crime rate. Levitt and Dubner claim that high abortion rates in a
nation diminishes crime, while Clowes claims that there are multiple fundamental issues when
concluding that legalized abortion leads to cutbacks in crime. By comparing and contrasting the two
sources, there will be a sufficient amount of information to determine how abortion rates affect crime.
Steven Levitt s and Stephen Dubner s focus on their book Freakonomics is revealing to their audience
eccentric ways to correspond to a variety of outlandish, yet controversial issues that are unaware and
oblivious to our society. Specifically in chapter 4 titled Where Have All the Criminals Gone? , they
distinctly talk about the sudden drop in crime rates in the 1990s, which was caused primarily by the
legalization of abortion. Additionally, they analyze other

Little Skate Fishes Research Paper
Little skate fishes are known to be one of the dominant members of the demersal fish community in
the northwestern Atlantic. They live deep in the ocean, sitting in the ocean floor most of times. They
use these organs called spiracles as I mentioned above, they help the little skate to function oxygen to
reach internal respiratory organs and still intake oxygenated water over their gills. These spiracles are
slit like openings near their eyes. The process goes where water is taken in through the spiracles then
passes over to the gills which then leaves the body through five pairs of gill passageway underneath
the body. These little skate fishes live on by feeding on crabs, sea squirts, worms, squid, mollusks,
small fishes or any other small

As such, LVMH has steered much of the focus of its central brand eastwards, to an area where
consumers have more disposable income than ever and are ready and willing to embrace the influence
of their Western counterparts China. All the while, the company makes no substitute for quality by
bringing the very same products to the Chinese market, making no concession in pricing, treating the
Chinese market as that of a developed country, where demand for the service provision on offer from
LV is growing faster than anywhere else.
Understanding Consumer Behaviour
Consumer decision making is needs based. Consequently, the process of understanding consumers
does not so much rest on identifying the behavioural patterns of a group and then choosing to pitch a
product to them, but rather on identifying the specific need which is common to certain people and
accordingly striving to satisfy that need (Brady, 2010).
Maslow would classify the specific need of those within LV s target market as one related to esteem ,

Codes of conduct The NMC were set up by the UK government in 2002 to regulate nursing and
midwifery professionals in the UK, the main aim of the NMC is the protection of the public. The
NMC s revised code became effective in 2015, the code sets out standards for good practice and
behaviour that all nurses and midwives adhere to. The new Code puts patients and service users at the
heart of practice with the intention of better protecting the public. (Nmc.org.uk, 2015). The SSSC
provides both social care workers and employers with codes of practice, these codes provide guidance
and standards to which workers and employers should meet. Forming from the Regulation of Care
(Scotland) Act 2001, the SSSC was established with an aim of protecting the user of services and
setting standards that professionals are required to adhere to. (User, 2017) Continuing professional

Gandhi s Journey Of Non Violence
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi often referred to as Bapu was born on October 2, 1869. He was
brought up in a middle class family where his father, Karamchand was chief minister of Porbandar
where Gandhi was born as well. Gandhi was highly influenced from his mother, Putlibai who would
fast on daily basis, which explains why Gandhi believed in fasting as well. He grew up around having
Muslim and Christian friends. At the age of 13, he had an arranged marriage with Kasturba and later
had four sons with. Although Gandhi s father wanted him to become a government minister, Gandhi
was more interested in becoming a doctor. In fact, he went to study law abroad in London. Though all

shows different religious beliefs of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians as well as Gandhi s
journey of non violence. As it starts out Gandhi being thrown out of the train on the way to South
Africa, which shows discrimination towards Hindus for the first time in the film. After the arrival in
South Africa, he gets in touch with other Hindu workers where they decide to burn off the British
government documents that each individual was given. Although, Gandhi was kept on being hit with
such cruelty, he didn t give up. The cruel behavior of British soldiers eventually opened his eyes and

Rough Draft Of A Personal Narrative Essay
Personal narrative draft When I was 3 years old, just 19 months after my sister was born, we went on a
trip to Florida. We had to wake up at about 3:00 a.m. ,because it takes us an hour to get are luggage in
the truck and to get everyone up and dressed. Our truck was a black Suburban. It took an hour and a
half to get the airport, an hour or two to get our 3 bags of luggage on the plane,to get breakfast,to get
coffee for my Mom, Dad, Nana Pat, and, Papa Daryl. Finally, we got a security check for all of us.
Then,we went to go find our gate where our plane was. Then we finally found our gate. We walked in
through the door that was open and we walked through a long tunnel like thing to get onto our plane.
When we were stepping onto our plane, I could see the path that the plane was on. There s a little
crack. A crack in between the plane and that little ramp thing that you walk on to get into the plane.
Our plane was Delta. After all of that we we re getting on the plane. We found our sets and sat in them
and buckled up we were ready for our flight. Were on a plane I was really excited about the trip, when
we took off it was going down the runway faster and faster then all of a the sudden the plane was
going up off the ground then we were in the sky floating forward. Then the plane was going fast
whenever I looked out the window everything on land and not in the air looked tiny it was an amazing
site from up above. It felt like we were flying with the birds.

Jc Penny s New Image Summary
In the article JC Penny s New Image: Why the Re Branding Will be Successful, the author focuses on
how JC Penny is changing it s way of marketing. Former Apple employee Ron Johnson, became the
CEO of JC Penny, and had many ideas for how to rebrand the company. He changed the way JC
Penny promotes products, simplified the pricing, the presentation of the company, the retail setting,
and the personality of the store. Johnson reduced the number of promotions a year from over 590 to
12. In addition, Johnson created a 3 tier pricing system. In this system, the first tier is the everyday
low price, the second tier is month long sale items, and the third tier is the best price discount, which
occurs on every first and third Friday of the month. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, the presentation will be minimalistic, using focused and simplified images and accented colors
in photographs to put the emphasis on the products. The retail setting, or the store itself, had a
makeover as well. The layout and organization changed. The services and now at the center and the
products are at the perimeter of a store, as well as the products being put into shops with certain brand
names in each shop . The personality will change, mostly because of the new framed logo. With all of
these changes, the quality will stay the same, if not even better, and there will be an increase of over
100 new brands into the store. These changes are crucial to JC Penny to keep the store in business. I
have learned that if you do not change your business with the times or fads, people will lose interest
and you will slowly start to lose customers and money, and eventually your whole business. Also, with
the right changes, your business can last for a long time and stay popular. Examples of this are
Facebook, JC Penny, and Apple. This has also taught a great lesson; to not be afraid of change.
Changes can be good and helpful to you as a person, to your job and business, and to your

Criticism Of Patrick White
Abstract Patrick White (1912 1990) has an overwhelming stature in the history of Australian literature,
not only because he is hitherto the only Australian Nobel Laureate, but also because that he makes a
great contribution to Australian literature, with which other writers can hardly compare. When realism
is prevailing in Australia, White first brings modernism to Australian literature. He creates an
unprecedented unique writing style and influences such brilliant writers as Randolph Stow, Thomas
Keneally, Hal Porter and the so called White School writers. White also represents an era in the history
of Australian literature. In White Era , by his works, White puts Australian literature on the world map
and elevates the status of Australian literature to a new degree. ... Show more content on

After reviewing the studies on White s novels, it is found that existing studies on Twyborn are so few
that can even hardly be the tip of the iceberg of White study. In existing studies, instead of being the
main subject, Twyborn usually appears as a foil character and is criticized by many scholars as one of
White s worst novels. Besides, the interpretations of Twyborn are rather limited; compared with White
s other novels, Twyborn deserves more and diverse interpretations. The first chapter is a summary of
White s novels common feature: White likes to set his protagonists in quests. White borrows Odyssey
s framework in The Aunt s Story, designing a Whitean odyssey for his protagonist. Since then,
Whitean odyssey usually appears in his following works; his protagonists face and solve a serious of
problems, and then get closer to the meaning of their existence. In Twyborn, the protagonist Eddie
also makes a Whitean odyssey from France to Australia and to UK in order to pursue the complete
identity , becoming a complete man who can love both himself and

Brown Sugar Compare And Contrast
Coconut sugar looks a lot like brown sugar and the two are often considered interchangeable, but are
they? The answer is not as clear cut as you might think. Below, we will take a look at the flavors of
these two sugars and consider how well they work as substitutes for each other. How do the flavor of
coconut sugar and the flavor of brown sugar differ? These sugars come from two completely different
sources but are still similar in terms of their chemical makeup. When considering the taste of coconut
sugar s taste, it is important to note that it does not taste like coconut any more than beet sugar tastes
like beets. It is taken from the buds of the coconut tree, not from the coconut itself. Sap from the buds
is processed using methods similar to those used for converting maple syrup to maple sugar. It does
taste similar to brown sugar and provides very mild caramel notes. Brown sugar is simply granulated
white sugar with added molasses for color and a mild flavor. Because molasses is used, brown sugar
has a moister and stickier texture when compared to that of coconut sugar. It is usually made from
sugar cane, but it can be made from sugar beets. What you will get from it in terms of taste is
sweetness accompanied the deep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some bakers have found that because of its softer texture, coconut sugar does not blend as well with
butter as brown sugar does. This results in some pastries turning out dry or overly dense. The grains
also tend to be coarser than those of brown sugar, which can lead to speckling and a more porous
texture in some baked goods. You can compensate for the dryness by adding extra butter and you can
prevent the speckling and texture issues by grinding the sugar in a food processor or blender. In
applications where it is melted or sprinkled, coconut sugar is virtually identical to brown

Black Americans And The Black Freedom Struggle
Many have thought that the end of the civil war was also the end of the suppression against Black
Americans. However, real freedom hasn t been present to them. Discriminations against Black
Americans were transformed and still exist in other aspects. The life of a Black American was planned
before he or she was born, not much freedom in their hands. Black American experience disadvantage
and discrimination in many different institutions that all prove the existence of Neocolonialism. From
housing to education, formal and informal social controls prevented them from equality and freedom.
Moreover, Black youth was forced to be in the pipeline of incarceration from school, because of the
lack of resources and attention to them. In this ongoing fight for Black Freedom, many influential
Black leaders stepped up. One of them is one of the most important figures in the Black freedom
struggle history, Ella Baker. This essay will first, explain key issues on Black Americans freedom in
housing and school to prison pipeline, then identify Ella Baker s theory in the Black Freedom
Struggle, and finally define what freedom means. It s the American dream to own a house with
beautiful white fences and yard and live joyfully with families, but not many Black Americans can
live up to that dream. The hate and prejudice against Black American didn t reduce much since the end
of the civil war. I m not prejudice, but I d burn this building down before I d sell it to any damned

Complications Of The Sweet Potato
AG The sweet potato led to the death of well over a million people. Now, the sweet potato did not
directly kill all these people, but it did contribute to those deaths. On the other hand, the sweet potato
also saved many lives for the Chinese population. The sweet potato among other new world crops
were over monocropped. This meant that they were singularly planted, this drained the nutrients from
the soil. The sweet potato was the most popular crop coming from the New World because corn
competed with rice. The sweet could be planted almost anywhere. It also led to deforestation. The
problem is significant because the deforestation made the floods even more popular. Which caused
hundreds of floods. The floods led to the death of millions of people. When the floods occurred they
took away crops, soil, and nutrients in the soil. The best solution is to stop monocropping and plant a
diverse amount of crops in the area each year. Another great solution is to continue planting more
trees.
1 The introduction of the sweet potato had effects on the Chinese environment. 2 The sweet potato
was introduced to China from the Philippines by ships that were crossing the Atlantic, around the
1580s. The sweet potato likely came from the Central or South Americas. It was also monocropped by
the Chinese. The sweet potato came to China in a very important time. At the time, China had a fourth
of the world s population. They needed to feed these people on a twelfth of the world s farmable

The Civilizations Of Ancient Civilization
Civilization, derived from the latin word civis meaning citizen , or simply someone who lives in a city.
However, what is the difference between a group of people who live in a town and our modern
concept of civilization. To find the answer to that question we can turn to the civilizations of ancient
times. The beginning of civilization as we know it began in the Neolithic era. This era began with a
very distinct change to the way of life, from the old way of migrating constantly to wherever the food
roams to settling down in one area and growing food to sustain oneself. Yet, the first civilizations were
more than just people who stayed in the same place, grew their own food, and relied on water and
shelter. They had something that made them standout from the people around them. Each ancient
civilization had different values and cultures that led to the diverse institutions founded by these
ancient civilizations. The first ancient civilization of the Neolithic era is that of Mesopotamia.
Mesopotamia comes from the greek words meso , in between, and potami meaning river. This refers to
the location of the region of Mesopotamia which lies between the Tigress and Euphrates Rivers. The
first urban society of Mesopotamia is Sumer. One value of Sumer and of Mesopotamia is the love of
religion and the beliefs in their gods. Religion plays a huge role in the values of the Sumerians as each
large settlement has a temple where a priestly class acts as managers. Worship held a

Setting Tuition and Financial Aid
Setting Tuition and Financial Aid
Managerial Economics
09/15/2013
The idea behind applicants had apparently concluded that if the college cost more, it must be better
(Brickley, Smith, amp; Zimmerman, 2009) is still a premise that society perceived as accurate but the
financial problem behind this idea is if students are not receiving the help needed with a financial aid
increase, it feels that this idea will not hold up very much longer.
Susan s analysis that the increase in tuition fee is likely to increase in the student enrollment and
therefore would be helpful in solving the school s financial problem is absolutely incorrect. Financial
aid is an important factor when students are thinking about applying for a college. ... Show more

The following result associated with increase in the demand for enrolment in other colleges has
convinced the president of Liberal Arts College that increasing tuition fees would lead to an increase
in the quantity demanded. But Susan s analysis is not accurate and the increase in enrollment along
with increase in tuition fee is not because demand curve is upward sloping but because there is just an
increase in demand for enrolment in these prestige colleges. Hence Susan s analysis and suggestion of
increasing the tuition fee and decreasing financial aid should not be accepted.
A college should be recognized by its education and academic levels and not by its costs of
attendance. Susan wants to increase prices to increase revenue and not because the college is investing
on better academic resources and faculty staff. If the college wants to increase total revenue, then they
need to focus on improving the quality of education by having a better faculty staff and study
environment, which ultimately may lead to better job opportunities for student after graduation.

The Role Of Clothing In The Elizabethan Era
The Elizabethan era lasted from 1558 1803 while Queen Elizabeth 1 reigned over England until her
death. It was known as the height of the English Renaissance during which English literature and
theatre reached its peak. At the time there was also a lot of political conflict between the Catholic and
Prodestant churches. There was also a growth of wealthy middle class being able to live and dress like
upper class people.
Because of this Queen Elizabeth thought it was important to regulate the garments of the classes to
maintain the social order. There were already some laws present in England at the time, and Elizabeth
also passed her own laws, called the sumptuary laws to support these. This included limiting use of
particular materials and colours to certain classes and so it was easy to tell which class people
belonged to as their clothes was an indicator towards their wealth and status. Punishments for
breaking the laws included fines, loss of property and capital punishment.
Women s fashion in the Elizabethan era for women with a high status was a very elaborate process.
The garments worn were highly expensive, and a main silhouette of the era was the definition of a
small waist and large shoulders. Many of the outer clothing had slashes to expose some of the

The Power Broker By Robert Moses Summary
The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York
by Robert Caro
Academic Review
Robert Caro s grandiose 1,296 page book, The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New
York, reveals the story of the complex and controversial persona of America s greatest builder Robert
Moses. The magnificently well written piece of work received Pulitzer prize as well as Francis
Parkman prize for best book of the year. Caro, born in 1935 in New York City, showed interest and
passion for writing early in life. Known for his extensive research and detailed long pieces, he was
determined to write Robert Moses biography in spite of Moses initial rejection and lack of
cooperation. Upon realizing the book was unavoidable, Moses agreed to comply and be interviewed
several times by Caro. Moses, the ultimate builder, whose career lasted a long time, eventually gained
enough power to build himself an empire in which he lived like an emperor and managed to get his
every wish granted. He successfully manipulated government officials and almost any individual he
came in contact with was transformed into a pawn used to assist him in building and turning his
dreams into a reality. While Caro s masterpiece provides a substantial amount of background
information on his leading character, its main focus is less about his life story and more about power
and what he was able to do with it once he had a taste of it.

  • 2. Cooper Industries Advanced Financial Management Cooper Industries Case March 30, 2009 Jesse Van Gestel ID#200504399 Cooper Industries, Inc. 1. If you were Mr. Cizik of Cooper Industries, would you try to gain control of Nicholson File Company in May 1972? 2. What is the maximum price that Cooper can afford to pay for Nicholson and still keep the acquisition attractive from the standpoint of Cooper? [Treasury Bills yielded 5.6% in May 1972.] 3. What are the concerns and what is the bargaining position of each group of Nicholson stockholders? What must Cooper offer group in order to acquire its shares? 4. On the assumption that the Cooper management wants to acquire at least 80% of the outstanding Nicholson stock and make the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nicholson s European distribution system could also be very helpful in expanding Cooper s sales in Europe. As Cooper Industries sells more of their product to industry and Nicholson to the consumer market by combining the companies they may be able to increase sales of both product lines to the market segment they are weaker in. 2. FMV of Nicholson = $172,630,000 Per share value = $295.60 I was not able to come up with a valid firm value, as there was no information regarding how much working capital will be increased by Nicholson over the next ten years, nor was there any information available regarding how much capital expenditures would be increased. Capital expenditures were assumed to equal depreciation and it was assumed working capital was not growing. 3. H.K. Porter bought their shares with the intention of taking over Nicholson themselves, however as they were unable to acquire enough shares to buy the company they are now looking to sell their shares. They would obviously like to do this profitably if possible and their primary concerns are therefore the price and liquidity. They are looking to get the most money out the stocks that they can and so price is of primary importance in bargaining with them. However, they also want to be able to

  • 4. Potential Of Microbial Fuel Cells Potential of Microbial Fuel Cells A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by the catalytic and metabolic reactions of microorganisms. The microorganisms function as a catalyst in the electron transfer between the electrodes. A MFC is just like any other fuel cell in its function which can undergo a half cell reaction. A typical microbial fuel cell consists of anode and cathode compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) permitting specific membrane. At the anode, the organic matter or substrate is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons and protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode through an external electric circuit, while protons are transferred to the cathode through the membrane. Electrons and protons react in the cathode, combining with oxygen to form water. A simple REDOX reaction takes place in the fuel cell. The rate of the reactions can depend on the internal resistance, bacteria, substrate, semi permeable membrane and electrode configuration. The basic reactions that occur when microorganisms consume a substrate such as sugar in the presence of O2 they produce CO2 and H2O. But, when oxygen is not present they produce CO2, H+ and e . At Anode, C12H22O11 +13H2O → 12CO2 + 48H+ + 48e− At Cathode, O2 + 4e− + 4H+ → 2H2O The applications of MFC s are that, they can be used for electricity generation, bio hydrogen production, wastewater treatment and bioremediation. • 5. Comparing The Real Inspector Hound And Deathtrap In both The Real Inspector Hound and Deathtrap, the authors Tom Stoppard and Iva Levin, respectively, use the play within a play to enhance the idea of reality as well as to suggest the power of illusion over reality. In Tom Stoppard s The Real Inspector Hound, the two narratives become entangled and nearly impossible to separate. The play begins with two distinct narrative arcs: the action at Muldoon manor, the play within a play, and the two theater critics, Moon and Birdboot, watching the play. However by the end of the play, Moon and Birdboot are literally caught up in the drawing room murder mystery that they are supposed to be reviewing. Made to function within two structural units, the characters acquire one identity in the outer play their real identities and another in the inner play. However, the distinction between the identities, and, even, between the plays, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In it s entirety, Deathtrap is an illusion in which Clifford Anderson s play, like the actual play itself, is entitled Deathtrap, and is also a one set, five character thriller. However, unlike a traditional play, Myra is the sole audience member to Sidney Bruhl and Clifford Anderson s performance. Myra is convinced of a reality where Bruhl is willing to kill Anderson in order to steal his script. But when Anderson seemingly rises from the dead and apparently beats Bruhl to death, Myra, shocked and terrified, drops dead of a heart attack. At this moment, Anderson declares that their plan has been successful: Anderson s murder had been staged to shock and kill Myra. Anderson and Bruhl s mini play created a false sense of reality to which Myra fell victim. This skewing of reality becomes the basis for Deathtrap as a whole since Anderson and Bruhl s original illusion shape all of the following ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Equity Method of Accounting for Investments Chapter 1 the equity method of accounting for investments Chapter Outline I. Three methods are principally used to account for an investment in equity securities. A. Fair value method: applied by an investor when only a small percentage of a company s voting stock is held. 1. Income is recognized when dividends are declared. 2. Portfolios are reported at market value. If market values are unavailable, investment is reported at cost. B. Consolidation: when one firm controls another (e.g., when a parent has a majority interest in the voting stock of a subsidiary or control through variable interests (FIN 46R), their financial statements are consolidated and reported for the combined entity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... B. Payments made in excess of underlying book value can sometimes be identified with specific investee accounts such as inventory or equipment. C. An extra acquisition price can also be assigned to anticipated benefits that are expected to be derived from the investment. For accounting purposes, these amounts are presumed to reflect an intangible asset referred to as goodwill. Goodwill is calculated as any excess payment that is not attributable to specific accounts. For the year 2002 and beyond, goodwill is no longer amortized. V. Deferral of unrealized gains in inventory A. Gains derived from intercompany transactions are not considered completely earned until the transferred goods are either consumed or resold to unrelated parties. B. Downstream sales of inventory 1. Downstream refers to transfers made by the investor to the investee. 2. Intercompany gains from sales are initially deferred under the equity method and then recognized as income at the time of the inventory s eventual disposal. 3. The amount of gain to be deferred is the investor s ownership percentage multiplied by the markup on the merchandise remaining at the end of the year. C. Upstream sales of inventory 1. • 7. Attitudes To Nature In Pre-Modern Europe Essay To explore how attitudes to nature changed in early modern Europe, we must first understand how nature was perceived in the pre modern era. This essay will look into the pre modern Christian theological view, before exploring the early modern era that was largely shaped by the scientific revolution and its most notable people, the use of metaphors. and religious ideas, such as the chain of being. Attitudes towards nature in the pre modern or medieval period, were largely based on Christian theological views and Aristotelian science. Despite science and religion usually seen as complete opposites, religion and God s plan were often considered the scientific explanation for many things, including gravity. Aristotelian science was mainly governed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, unlike with the scientific revolution, the chain of being showed a better outlook on nature, and also had a more religious element. The chain of being was one way of finding our place in the universe, which was a common idea in both medieval and modern Europe. God and all his angels were at the top of the chain, below which were humans, and then came all the animals followed by plants. It was, once again, the idea that humans are superior to nature and that it is our rights as the superior beings, to rule over and control nature. While the chain of being and the scientific revolution, both view nature as something to be controlled and dominated over, the chain of being was less anthropocentric, even though it still did see human s above nature, and nature as something to be used for human s benefit. Despite this, the chain of being also gave importance to nature. The Great Chain of Being placed people and nature in an intimate relationship (Porter 1946). This was due to every single part of the chain being important, and to damage one link, would destroy the entire chain. Therefore, humans would have to have some level of care for nature, to ensure our own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Odd Stories In The Bible Throughout the Bible there are several stories that may seem odd and morally difficult to understand. Although these stories appear to be much they all have a purpose and are trying to tell us something. God works in mysterious ways, and these, odd, stories are where he began. These purposeful stories consist of; Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac, Dinah s rape, and the Potiphar s wife sexually harassing Joseph. Firstly, Abraham was promised by God that he was going to bless his family and make great nations out of his descendants (Gen. 12:1 3). God first told Abraham this when he was commanded by God to leave all that he knew to go live in an unknown land. Then, because Abraham trusted God and followed his command he was enlightened in the fact that God was going to bless him with as many descendants as there were stars (Gen. 15:5 6). Although, Abraham had no children at the time he trusted God. But his wife, Sarah, had little faith, so she told Abraham to lay with her servant, Hagar, so that he may have a child to inherit his land. People fear change because it pushes them out of their comfort zone. One of the greatest fears in the world is the fear of the unknown. Also, Hallstead s should consider adding internet advertising to increase its market size. This may be an opportunity for cheap advertising. Trait Oriented Personality And Personality Traits Trait Oriented Personality Trait oriented personality theorists suggest that personality is an internal trait is born and breed within the individual. Gordon Allport a psychologist categorized the excess of 40,000 words in the dictionary that describe personality traits in 1936. Allport separated these personality traits into cardinal traits, central traits and secondary traits. These traits each affect the individual in different ways throughout their life. Cardinal traits dominate throughout a lifetime such as an individual is boisterous. Central traits Allport theorizes these traits develop overtime as each individual develops their own moral compass, intelligent, honest and shy all would be considered central traits according to Allport s theory. Allport s final category is called secondary traits these traits pertain to limited situations and are predictable to similar situations however can be out of character for an individual s day to day life, for instance, getting stuck in unpredicted traffic that causes one to be very late and take an unexplained amount of time to dissipate. This traffic situation may cause a usually calm individual to act irrational, this behavior is likely to occur in other unpredictable situation such as long lines and large crowds. Analysis Of The Minister s Black Veil By Nathaniel Hawthorne The short story The Minister s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne follows the minister Mr. Hooper whose simple change in appearance alters the very nature of his existence in society till his death. While his decision to begin to wear a black veil over his face ostracizes him from society, it also turns him into a more influential clergyman. With the symbolism of the black veil, Hawthorne makes a statement on the involvement of society in personal matters and the black veil that is present over the heart of every man, making the point that everyone is guilty of being sinful. Hawthorne portrays society s obsession with that which they do not know for sure or cannot understand. Hawthorne portrays the townspeople in this way to convey how people can often be involved in matters not concerning them so much so that they often pass judgements that may not be just. In Mr. Hooper s case, the townspeople are so invested in analyzing his black veil that they allow themselves to be affected by his veil so much that they fear him and his veil, and they even avoid him, all the while not considering how they might be wrong as they are not entirely different from Mr. Hooper. Symbolism is very prominent throughout the entire short story. The color black typically symbolizes evil, darkness, and sin. The black veil which conceals the minister s features, with its negative connotation, is representative of sin. The fact that it is a veil, which traditionally has a purpose is to conceal one s face, implies that the minister s black veil symbolizes secret sin. Hawthorne uses this symbolism to imply that man is inherently sinful; if a minister could potentially guilty of sin, so can others. For the townspeople, the black veil has various possible meanings. The word abortion by definition means the induced expulsion of a fetus from the womb before it is able to survive independently. Some country, abortion became legal because an authority thought that the legalized abortion would be work and solve a problem in society. In the United States, the legalized abortion was used since 1973. After legalized abortion used, there is an extremely controversial issue because while some people are completely against it, others believe that a woman should have the right to choose. I read the first question (1a) out loud and had barely finished when he gave me the answer. His mental math was in high gear despite his initial apprehension. I proceeded to the next question (1b) with the same result. He provided an answer quickly to this question as well. I was beginning to wonder if this was going to be too easy for him, so I asked him to write down and explain his thinking so I could understand how he got the answers. For number (1a), he explained that he multiplied 6 by 3 because Alice ate 6 ounces of cake and she grew 3 feet for each ounce of cake that she ate. He then added the product of 36 to her original height of 4 and came up with the answer of 40 feet. For (1b), he modeled a different approach where he started with 16 feet and subtracted 4 increments of 3 until he arrived at Alice s original height of 4 feet. He told me that he knew that he needed to get to the base height, and that is why he used subtraction. He did it in increments of 3 as he knew that Alice grew 3 feet/ounce of cake. For question (2) he again used mental math and came to the conclusion that it was 4 feet/ounce of water. His rationale was the same as for (1b), to get back down to the base height. With the peculiar comparison of crime and abortion, we look at what authors Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner writes in their book Freakonomics and what Dr. Brian Clowes, director of education and research at Human Life International, writes in his article Does Abortion Really Reduce Crime? . The most significant debate contrasting among the two sources is if abortion is the cause of the diminishment of the crime rate. Levitt and Dubner claim that high abortion rates in a nation diminishes crime, while Clowes claims that there are multiple fundamental issues when concluding that legalized abortion leads to cutbacks in crime. By comparing and contrasting the two sources, there will be a sufficient amount of information to determine how abortion rates affect crime. Steven Levitt s and Stephen Dubner s focus on their book Freakonomics is revealing to their audience eccentric ways to correspond to a variety of outlandish, yet controversial issues that are unaware and oblivious to our society. • 30. Brown Sugar Compare And Contrast Coconut sugar looks a lot like brown sugar and the two are often considered interchangeable, but are they? The answer is not as clear cut as you might think. Below, we will take a look at the flavors of these two sugars and consider how well they work as substitutes for each other. How do the flavor of coconut sugar and the flavor of brown sugar differ? These sugars come from two completely different sources but are still similar in terms of their chemical makeup. When considering the taste of coconut sugar s taste, it is important to note that it does not taste like coconut any more than beet sugar tastes like beets. It is taken from the buds of the coconut tree, not from the coconut itself. Sap from the buds is processed using methods similar to those used for converting maple syrup to maple sugar. It does taste similar to brown sugar and provides very mild caramel notes. Brown sugar is simply granulated white sugar with added molasses for color and a mild flavor. Because molasses is used, brown sugar has a moister and stickier texture when compared to that of coconut sugar. It is usually made from sugar cane, but it can be made from sugar beets. What you will get from it in terms of taste is sweetness accompanied the deep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some bakers have found that because of its softer texture, coconut sugar does not blend as well with butter as brown sugar does. This results in some pastries turning out dry or overly dense. The grains also tend to be coarser than those of brown sugar, which can lead to speckling and a more porous texture in some baked goods. You can compensate for the dryness by adding extra butter and you can prevent the speckling and texture issues by grinding the sugar in a food processor or blender. In applications where it is melted or sprinkled, coconut sugar is virtually identical to brown ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Black Americans And The Black Freedom Struggle Many have thought that the end of the civil war was also the end of the suppression against Black Americans. However, real freedom hasn t been present to them. Discriminations against Black Americans were transformed and still exist in other aspects. The life of a Black American was planned before he or she was born, not much freedom in their hands. Black American experience disadvantage and discrimination in many different institutions that all prove the existence of Neocolonialism. From housing to education, formal and informal social controls prevented them from equality and freedom. Moreover, Black youth was forced to be in the pipeline of incarceration from school, because of the lack of resources and attention to them. In this ongoing fight for Black Freedom, many influential Black leaders stepped up. One of them is one of the most important figures in the Black freedom struggle history, Ella Baker. This essay will first, explain key issues on Black Americans freedom in housing and school to prison pipeline, then identify Ella Baker s theory in the Black Freedom Struggle, and finally define what freedom means. It s the American dream to own a house with beautiful white fences and yard and live joyfully with families, but not many Black Americans can live up to that dream. The hate and prejudice against Black American didn t reduce much since the end of the civil war. I m not prejudice, but I d burn this building down before I d sell it to any damned nigger. ... • 32. Complications Of The Sweet Potato AG The sweet potato led to the death of well over a million people. Now, the sweet potato did not directly kill all these people, but it did contribute to those deaths. On the other hand, the sweet potato also saved many lives for the Chinese population. The sweet potato among other new world crops were over monocropped. This meant that they were singularly planted, this drained the nutrients from the soil. The sweet potato was the most popular crop coming from the New World because corn competed with rice. The sweet could be planted almost anywhere. It also led to deforestation. The problem is significant because the deforestation made the floods even more popular. Which caused hundreds of floods. The floods led to the death of millions of people. When the floods occurred they took away crops, soil, and nutrients in the soil. The best solution is to stop monocropping and plant a diverse amount of crops in the area each year. Another great solution is to continue planting more trees. 1 The introduction of the sweet potato had effects on the Chinese environment. 2 The sweet potato was introduced to China from the Philippines by ships that were crossing the Atlantic, around the 1580s. The sweet potato likely came from the Central or South Americas. It was also monocropped by the Chinese. The sweet potato came to China in a very important time. At the time, China had a fourth of the world s population. They needed to feed these people on a twelfth of the world s farmable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Civilizations Of Ancient Civilization Civilization, derived from the latin word civis meaning citizen , or simply someone who lives in a city. However, what is the difference between a group of people who live in a town and our modern concept of civilization. To find the answer to that question we can turn to the civilizations of ancient times. The beginning of civilization as we know it began in the Neolithic era. This era began with a very distinct change to the way of life, from the old way of migrating constantly to wherever the food roams to settling down in one area and growing food to sustain oneself. Yet, the first civilizations were more than just people who stayed in the same place, grew their own food, and relied on water and shelter. They had something that made them standout from the people around them. Each ancient civilization had different values and cultures that led to the diverse institutions founded by these ancient civilizations. The first ancient civilization of the Neolithic era is that of Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia comes from the greek words meso , in between, and potami meaning river. This refers to the location of the region of Mesopotamia which lies between the Tigress and Euphrates Rivers. The first urban society of Mesopotamia is Sumer. One value of Sumer and of Mesopotamia is the love of religion and the beliefs in their gods. Religion plays a huge role in the values of the Sumerians as each large settlement has a temple where a priestly class acts as managers. Worship held a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Setting Tuition and Financial Aid Setting Tuition and Financial Aid Managerial Economics 09/15/2013 The idea behind applicants had apparently concluded that if the college cost more, it must be better (Brickley, Smith, amp; Zimmerman, 2009) is still a premise that society perceived as accurate but the financial problem behind this idea is if students are not receiving the help needed with a financial aid increase, it feels that this idea will not hold up very much longer. Susan s analysis that the increase in tuition fee is likely to increase in the student enrollment and therefore would be helpful in solving the school s financial problem is absolutely incorrect. Financial aid is an important factor when students are thinking about applying for a college. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following result associated with increase in the demand for enrolment in other colleges has convinced the president of Liberal Arts College that increasing tuition fees would lead to an increase in the quantity demanded. But Susan s analysis is not accurate and the increase in enrollment along with increase in tuition fee is not because demand curve is upward sloping but because there is just an increase in demand for enrolment in these prestige colleges. Hence Susan s analysis and suggestion of increasing the tuition fee and decreasing financial aid should not be accepted. A college should be recognized by its education and academic levels and not by its costs of attendance. Susan wants to increase prices to increase revenue and not because the college is investing on better academic resources and faculty staff. If the college wants to increase total revenue, then they need to focus on improving the quality of education by having a better faculty staff and study environment, which ultimately may lead to better job opportunities for student after graduation. • 36. The Role Of Clothing In The Elizabethan Era The Elizabethan era lasted from 1558 1803 while Queen Elizabeth 1 reigned over England until her death. It was known as the height of the English Renaissance during which English literature and theatre reached its peak. At the time there was also a lot of political conflict between the Catholic and Prodestant churches. There was also a growth of wealthy middle class being able to live and dress like upper class people. Because of this Queen Elizabeth thought it was important to regulate the garments of the classes to maintain the social order. There were already some laws present in England at the time, and Elizabeth also passed her own laws, called the sumptuary laws to support these. This included limiting use of particular materials and colours to certain classes and so it was easy to tell which class people belonged to as their clothes was an indicator towards their wealth and status. Punishments for breaking the laws included fines, loss of property and capital punishment. Women s fashion in the Elizabethan era for women with a high status was a very elaborate process. The garments worn were highly expensive, and a main silhouette of the era was the definition of a small waist and large shoulders. The Power Broker By Robert Moses Summary The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert Caro Academic Review Robert Caro s grandiose 1,296 page book, The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York, reveals the story of the complex and controversial persona of America s greatest builder Robert Moses. The magnificently well written piece of work received Pulitzer prize as well as Francis Parkman prize for best book of the year. Caro, born in 1935 in New York City, showed interest and passion for writing early in life. Known for his extensive research and detailed long pieces, he was determined to write Robert Moses biography in spite of Moses initial rejection and lack of cooperation. Upon realizing the book was unavoidable, Moses agreed to comply and be interviewed several times by Caro. Moses, the ultimate builder, whose career lasted a long time, eventually gained enough power to build himself an empire in which he lived like an emperor and managed to get his every wish granted. He successfully manipulated government officials and almost any individual he came in contact with was transformed into a pawn used to assist him in building and turning his dreams into a reality. While Caro s masterpiece provides a substantial amount of background information on his leading character, its main focus is less about his life story and more about power and what he was able to do with it once he had a taste of it.
