4. Pipes
Water can be conveyed either through gravity conduits
or through pressure conduits.
Gravity conduits:-
Are in the form of open channels and it can
be used when water is to be conveyed under
atmospheric pressure.
Pressure conduits:-
These are in form of pipes and they are adopted when
water is to be conveyed under pressure.

5. Types of pipe
Asbestos cement pipes:-
these pipes are made from a mixture of asbestos fibers
and cement. It is used for conveying water under very
low pressure and its use in water supply is very much
restricted.

6. Types of pipes
Cast-iron pipes:
These pipes are extensively used for the conveyance of
water. They are available in sizes up to diameter about
1200mm or more.

7. Types of pipe
Cement concrete pipes:-
The cement concrete pipes may be plain, reinforced or
pre stressed with diameters varying from 500mm to
2500mm or more.
Plain cement concrete pipes is used for low pressure.
Reinforced or pre stressed cement concrete pipes are
used for high pressure.

9. Types of pipe
Copper pipes:-
The copper pipes do not sag or bend due to hot water.
Copper pipes offers great resistance to corrosion but
as they are costly, they are not used for distribution of
water.

10. Types of pipe
Galvanized-iron pipes:-
This type of pipe is used for water supply work inside the
building. These pipes are made of wrought steel pipes
provided with zinc coating to prevent from
corrosion. It is cheap, light in weight and easy to
handle and transport.

11. Types of pipe
Plastic pipes:-
These pipes are being used increasingly these days for supply of cold
water.
They are light in weight, non-corrosive, lower in cost and are good
insulator.
There are 3 common types of plastic pipes
Unplasticized PVC (UPVC) or rigid pipes for use with cold water
Plasticized PVC pipes which are plasticized with addition of rubber. It
has lower strength and lower working temperature than UPVC pipes.
Chlorinated PVC (CPVC) pipes which can withstand higher
temperatures upto 120C0 (used to carry hot water)
These pipes are costlier than AC pipes but cheaper than GI pipes.

13. Types of pipes
Steel pipes:-
The mild steel is used for manufacture of steel pipes.
The joints of steel pipes are either riveted or welded
and hence, they vary both in length and diameter.
It is generally used for pipes having diameter greater
than 1200mm.
The inside and outside surfaces of steel pipes are
generally galvanized.

15. Types of pipes
Wrought-iron pipes:-
These pipes are light in weight and they can be easily
cut, threaded and worked. But they are found to be
costly and less durable as compared to the cast-iron
pipes and hence, they are not generally used in the
conveyance of water.

16. Types of pipes
Wood pipes:-
These pipes are usually prepared of staves or planks of
wood held together by steel bands. As alternate
conditions of dryness and wetness lead to wet rot,
these pipes are to be constantly filled with water.
Light in weight.
But can not bear high pressures.
These pipes are being used in earlier times.
