Cloves and eugenol slides
1. Importance of Cloves:
• Cloves contain Important nutrients
• High in Antioxidants:
1- Eugenol
2- Vitamin C
• May protect against cancer
• Can kill off bacteria
Cloves oil have constituents:
1- hydroxyphenyl propenes,
2- Phenolic acids,
3- Flavones
2. Eugenol
• 9381 – 14650 mg per 100 g
• Amphipathic Phenolic aromatic substance
• Used to cure asthma,
acne, and allergies
• Analgesic, antispasmodic,
and general antiseptic.
• Effected to:
1-Bacteria
2-Fungi
3. Mode of Action
• In Bacteria:
(a)Free –OH groups
(b)cause non specific permeability
(Salmonella Typhi)
• Cause cytotoxicity in S.aureus(Resistant to
vancomycin)
• Active against enzymes, histadine carboxylase,
amylase, ATPase.
4. • In Fungi:
• Because of lipophilic nature enter into fatty
acyl chain
• Effect fluidity and permeability
• C. albicans
• Other infectious bacteria infected by Eugenol:
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and S.
pneumoniae, E coli
