Purpose of the Magazine
The Masthead is only one single letter Q as they thought it would stand out the most on
newsstands, the letter ‘Q’ connotes that the magazine is of high quality. Also, the contrast
between the two colours red and white which makes it stand out on the stand against its
competitors.
The Strapline for this magazine is ‘Discover great music’ implies that Q magazine only talk about
great music which will make is stand out on the shelves compared to other magazines. The word
‘Discover’ conveys that it is educating the reader on new music and signifies (De Saussure) that
the magazine is actively finding new content for their readers and influential in finding new
talent.
The Main Image is of the music artist Jay Z who is very well known in the music industry and
around the world. This is called ‘Star appeal’ (Richard Dyer), who’s theory is that the use of a
celebrity draws attention to the customer when buying a magazine and expands the audience to
those who support and follow that character.
In the Cover Lines there are iconic music stars in bold because this will also attract more
consumers as these music artist have their own fan base. For someone who doesn't’t know about
Jay Z there are other big music artists to entice the consumer in.
Genre
Q magazine provides a Rock ‘n’ Roll and Pop music magazine.
The image on the right shoes the Foo Fighters on the front cover who
are a iconic ‘Rock and Roll’ band.
The image on the left connotes Ed Sheeran who is the most popular
upcoming pop music artist in the industry to date.
According to Spotify hip-hop is the most listened to music genre in the
world with 20 billion tracks from a range of artists.
In the UK Pop music over took Rock music as the most popular music
genre. This is due to their range within the genre and the a ability to
create music without instruments.

Content
The contents of ‘Q’ magazine includes stories, interviews and reviews
of a variety of different artists. They not only focus on the main

and upcoming concerts. ‘Q’ magazine also uses technical convergence
through their links to social media platforms which is another way to
actively connect with more potential audience, for example ‘Q’ has
1.23 billion monthly active users on Facebook. This is an important
tool for them to keep giving the reader new information so they buy
the magazine the next month.
The magazine has constant house style and layout, this is important
because it looks aesthetically pleasing on the readers eyes. Also, they
use the same image as on the front cover when talking about the
artist as this conveys how important he or she is. Furthermore, the
house style and layout is simple so this means the customer can
clearly indicate that it is ‘Q’ magazine as it stands out, as every issue is
the same. The house style is simple, monochrome and red as this then
increases the importance of the content within.

  • 4. Publisher and Product Bauer They have made around 2 billion euros in profit and have created over 300 digital products. This business was started about 138 years ago by the Bauer family. They have offices located in Europe and in Australia. They have a slogan ‘We think popular’ which coveys that they are popular and aim to be the most popular, the word ‘we’ is addressing the reader which brings the reader into the magazine. They also have 11,000 employees worldwide.Q It was first issued in October 1986 and the founders were Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. They chose the single letter Q as they thought it would stand out the most on newsstands, the letter ‘Q’ connotes that the magazine is of High Quality. The publishers Bauer brought this magazine of EMAP in 2008. It is based in the UK and comes out monthly. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk http://www.qthemusic.com
  • 5. Purpose of the Magazine The Masthead is only one single letter Q as they thought it would stand out the most on newsstands, the letter ‘Q’ connotes that the magazine is of high quality. Also, the contrast between the two colours red and white which makes it stand out on the stand against its competitors. The Strapline for this magazine is ‘Discover great music’ implies that Q magazine only talk about great music which will make is stand out on the shelves compared to other magazines. The word ‘Discover’ conveys that it is educating the reader on new music and signifies (De Saussure) that the magazine is actively finding new content for their readers and influential in finding new talent. The Main Image is of the music artist Jay Z who is very well known in the music industry and around the world. This is called ‘Star appeal’ (Richard Dyer), who’s theory is that the use of a celebrity draws attention to the customer when buying a magazine and expands the audience to those who support and follow that character. In the Cover Lines there are iconic music stars in bold because this will also attract more consumers as these music artist have their own fan base. For someone who doesn't’t know about Jay Z there are other big music artists to entice the consumer in.
  • 6. Genre Q magazine provides a Rock ‘n’ Roll and Pop music magazine. The image on the right shoes the Foo Fighters on the front cover who are a iconic ‘Rock and Roll’ band. The image on the left connotes Ed Sheeran who is the most popular upcoming pop music artist in the industry to date. According to Spotify hip-hop is the most listened to music genre in the world with 20 billion tracks from a range of artists. In the UK Pop music over took Rock music as the most popular music genre. This is due to their range within the genre and the a ability to create music without instruments. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/br ands/q
  • 7. Content The contents of ‘Q’ magazine includes stories, interviews and reviews of a variety of different artists. They not only focus on the main character within the main headline but also about talk about the other artists and bands which feature on the within the cover lines. Furthermore, the magazine also includes puff promotions through competitions to win various things, for example concert tickets. Another feature included is the advertisement of new albums, singles and upcoming concerts. ‘Q’ magazine also uses technical convergence through their links to social media platforms which is another way to actively connect with more potential audience, for example ‘Q’ has 1.23 billion monthly active users on Facebook. This is an important tool for them to keep giving the reader new information so they buy the magazine the next month. The magazine has constant house style and layout, this is important because it looks aesthetically pleasing on the readers eyes. Also, they use the same image as on the front cover when talking about the artist as this conveys how important he or she is. Furthermore, the house style and layout is simple so this means the customer can clearly indicate that it is ‘Q’ magazine as it stands out, as every issue is the same. The house style is simple, monochrome and red as this then increases the importance of the content within.
  • 8. Contents page analysis Masthead- The masthead is bold but very simple repeating the brand identity. This is significant as you know that it is ‘Q’ magazine very quickly and also creates unity between their other editions. The colours work well together as they contrast and complement each other. As it is called ‘Q’ this connotes that it is aimed at older people due to the formal design. Main Image- The main image on the content page is large and dominating. This is because the editor wants the reader to see the image first when opening the magazine, therefore it is placed right onto the edge of page. This straight away gives the reader an idea of what the magazine is about and what is featured in it. Linking also with the front cover and increasing the audience interest and suspense. On the image is a number in bold so the reader clearly knows what page it is on. Content of magazine- The page number and titles are all down the left side of the page in chronological order, this makes it clearer for reader. Each title has a brief description of what it is on that certain page to add suspense and entice the readers interest so they purchase the product to continue the story. Images- The smaller image at the bottom of the page shows the reader what other artists are in the music magazine, bringing focus and attention to them and balancing the use of text and images evenly. Issue number- This tells what issues of the magazine it is. Also, reinforces the reputation of the brand and the history and longevity .
  • 9. Deconstruct a front cover Masthead- The masthead is bold but very simple. However this is significant as you know that it is ‘Q’ magazine very quickly on the shopping shelves. The colours work well together as they contrast with each other. As it is called ‘Q’ this connotes that it is aimed at older people. Header- This informs the reader what types of articles are within the issue of magazine. In this particular magazine it is ‘ The most exciting people in music now’. This is used to draw the reader in, as they would like to read more about it. The use of the superlative ‘most’ conveys these artists are the people to be listing to so this also draws the reader in. Cover lines- The cover lines are used to attracted the reader to read more of the magazine. They are quotes from what people have said which are normally interesting and outrageous so the reader in drawn in by it and encouraged to read further. Main Image- This main image is of Jay-Z who is a well known star across the world. This is called ‘star appeal’(Richard Dyer), as lots of people know who Jay-Z is they are more likely to buy this magazine especially if they have a interview with him, therefore creating interaction between the artist and his audience but also increasing ‘Q’s audience. Barcode- The barcode is there so they can sell the magazine, also includes price and issue date and number, the price being small so the consumer doesn’t second guess their purchase. Strapline- The strapline for ‘Q’ magazine is ‘Discover Great Music’ which implies that you can find out about ‘great’ music in this magazine so this means more people will buy it. Also the denotation of ‘Discover’ connotes the fact ‘Q’ claims to be finding these new great music for its readers, pioneers in uncovering talent.
  • 10. Target Audience The target audience for ‘Q’ magazine is the older generation, female and males aged 18 to 30 (Hartley) who want to learn more about music. However ‘Q’ magazine doesn't’t appeal to many women is this age group. The majority of readers are male with 66.2% of the readers being male. The statistics show that 83.3% of of the readers are between the age of 15-44. This connotes that ‘Q’ magazine has the ability to appeal to a wide range of ages and social groups and demographics. http://louisejaynehudson.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/q- magazine-reader-profile-analysis.html
  • 11. Target Audience (Continued) According to Katz’ theory this magazine is to inform and educate the reader on Jay-Z and how he is the most exciting person in music at the moment. Also for the reader to expand their knowledge on the genre and music industry through the content within the magazine. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Explorers- The readers of ‘Q’ magazine would be explorers as the magazine includes new stories and different artists every month in their new issues. The reader would want to know this because then they can become more interested in new bands and artists and want to enjoy new music types.
  • 12. Demographics ‘Q’ magazine has mainly male readers which is 68.3% over female aged 18-30.This may be because of ‘male gaze’ (Laura Mulvey – 1975) which is when the front cover has something that a male would like rather than a women. This is connoted in the bottom picture of Cheryl Cole, connoting sex and lust through her pose, facial expression and especially the mise-en-scene of her lips being blood red.
