10. • It is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – it needs constant
monitoring

have knowledge of basic marketing principles
• You can’t just ‘set and forget’ – you should post regularly to
have an effect

vision

on social media

21. The 3 E’s of Social Media Marketing
• Good Social Media Marketing is…
– Educating
– Entertaining
– Engaging
22. Tips for good social media posts
• Keep it light, open and interactive:
– Good: Parents of 3F students: don’t forget that
permission slips need to be returned tomorrow!
– Bad: All permission slips MUST be returned
tomorrow or 3F students will not go on the trip.
– Good: Today is World Literacy Day, who is your
favourite children’s author?
– Bad: Today is World Literacy Day. Read a book.
23. Work in pairs…..
• Scenario: It is world teacher aide day and you
want to acknowledge all of the hard work
these staff provide your school.
1. Draft a Facebook Post – will you include any
pictures or links?
2. Write a tweet – will you link to another
website etc?
3. Plan a video for YouTube – what will you say?
Who will say it? Where will you place the link
to the video so people will see it?
24. Ideas for content…
• Post pictures of sports days
• Interview one teacher per week and introduce
• Have any children received any special awards?
• Class of the week?
• Cleanest classroom of the week?
• Has your school entered any competitions (eg.
tournament of the minds)
• Have there been any changes to school policy?
• Is your school fundraising?
• What events are coming up?
25. Getting the conversation started…
• Brainstorm 3 ways you can increase the social
media interaction at your school
26. Critical Posts
• Plan how you will politely respond to critical
posts.
1. Acknowledge the post
2. Respond, clarifying any mistakes or
misinformation
3. Invite the individual to meet with the
appropriate contact person to discuss the issue
further.
27. Work in pairs…
• Task: respond to this Facebook Post on your
school’s Facebook Page
• Jack Riley: “I live down the road from your
school, and I am sick of the traffic issues and
loud children in the afternoons. Do something
to fix this or I will make a complaint.”
28. Remember…
• Social media is a conversation, so be engaging
and ask questions to get them interacting
• Respond quickly to critical posts
• Schools should not promote businesses on
their social media site as it infers endorsement
by the school or department.
• Be transparent but always check you aren’t
releasing information that isn’t in the public
domain.

This video provides an interesting array of facts and figures, to put social media usage in perspective.
Can you name a few social media networks? Some are more popular than others.
These are some of the most well known social networks to those of us in the room. However, you may be surprised that the scope of social media extends way beyond this.
This graphic here depicts some of the lesser known social networks. These can be classified as above, from micro blogging platforms such as twitter where you may only use 140 characters, to virtual worlds where you create online versions of yourself. You may be surprised to learn that the biggest social network in the world exists in China, where facebook access is forbidden. Instead the chinese have their own social networks, own search engines etc such as weibo, ren ren and QQ.
