2. SUBWAY SURFERS
The Game
Subway Surfers is an endless runner game which gets more difficult as you
get further into the game. The game co-developed by Kiloo and SYBO Games,
private companies based in Denmark. You can only play it on mobile phones.
The game is located on top of subway trains, and the storyline is the main
character gets caught graffitiing by the police and he runs away trying to
avoid him by running between train tracks and on top of trains. The further
you get the faster the character runs, making it more difficult. If you trip up
twice then you get caught and if you run into something once then your also
caught.
Influences
Games can be very influential for young people and this game shows
someone casually jumping through train tracks, and anyone with a phone can
download the game so this could be sending the wrong message to children.
In a lot of games there is always a sexiest cast of characters. There is usually
multiple male characters with only one or two female. Big companies don’t
realize the inequality they create by something as simple as characters in a
game but this supports the perspective that men are superior to women.
The game is filmed from an over the shoulder angle, long/medium shot
so that we can see the character and we can see the scene around. The
colors used are bright and colorful to attract to its target audience. It
uses
Endless runner games mean that there are no different
levels and this means the game is quite repetitive so an
audience could get bored of it, however this could make
the player more addicted to it because it makes them
competitive so they can keep beating they’re own high
score. With this game there’s no multiplayer. The game
also contains other aspects to make it more interesting to
the player, like in a lot of other runner games it has magic
boxes which give you a bonus to help you get further and
beat your high score. As your running in the game you
can collect coins and if you save them up you can go to
the subway surfers shop and spend your coins on new
characters, or new skate boards and other boosts to help
you succeed. The game also introduces new versions of
the game monthly, for example the theme of the month
will be New Orleans, or a Christmas version. This means
new characters and new animations to make it more
interesting for the audience.
3. ROOM ESCAPE
I decided that to understand escape room apps id have to download one myself and see how they work. So I
found a popular one on the app store called 'Room Escape'. The game was et in an apartment and you had to
find puzzles around the room. Once you solved the puzzle it would lead you to a safe that held a part of the
missing clue to escape the rooms. My game will be similar to this room because they are both puzzle games
however it is dis-similar to my game because it doesn't follow the same genre. This game is specifically about
finding the clues to get out but with my game it's not going to be done using puzzles it will just be simply
finding the keys around the game and the character will be going as fast as they can because they want to
escape because they're scared.
The games animations are simple and the room is still with no movement, the setting only changes if you
interact with the room. My game will have interactive features but also have background objects that move
around to scare the player. For example I'll include bats that fly out.
The game is really complicated and contains a lot of
puzzles, although I would like mine to be as successful
and detailed as this I think it would be too time-
consuming. My game and this game will hare a similar
audience however I think my audience will be targeted
at a younger audience as the game is less detailed and
this game would be suitable for an older audience
because it involves a lot of thinking.
My game will have a character that is seen and
controlled to move where the player wants, however
in this game it's just a front eye view and we don't see
the camera at all.
4. OUTLASTOut Last is a game that can
be played on; XBOX 1,
Microsoft Windows, and
Play Station 4. It was first
published in 2013 for
Microsoft. It follows a
journalist around an
abandoned asylum and he
explores the massive
asylum trying to find a way
out, and on the way he
finds notes explaining what
happened to the asylum.
It’s a first person survival
horror game published by
Red Barrels. It was a very
popular game among
people ages 16+ and gives
the player opportunities to
make their own decisions.
The game received positive
reviews from critics,
specifically for the games
atmosphere, horror
elements and gameplay.
The game is set inside the asylum
and outside around the asylum,
but when outside it’s pitch black to
support the horror theme.
From this game I will copy only the
horror aspects because the
storyline would be too complicated
to re-create and contains too many
levels.
The game is known for it’s
terrifying elements.
A review from IGN articles wrote
by Marty Sliva: “I can safely say
that Outlast made me jump out of
my chair more often in its four-
hour descent into Hell than any
other game ever has. It's a tense,
brutal trek that strips you of any
power to defend yourself as you
try to avoid the deranged mental
patients that roam the halls of this
horrifyingly gorgeous world.”
5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
• The first app that I researched didn’t have anything to do the style of game I am planning to create, but I
thought it would give me a wider knowledge about gamers and how different games use different aspects
to attract a certain audience
• My games didn’t have clear links because they were all very different and I thought by analysing different
apps I could I would have a better understanding of different type of games
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work?
– I will include a few features from the escape room app because it shares multiple qualities that need
to be included in my app to make it an escape room, I like the feature where you can choose multiple
rooms to find clues but it would take too much time and also ruins the idea that they're stuck in one
room.
