India	
  is	
  working	
  on

  strategic	
  uranium	
  reserve

  the	
  nuclear	
  fuel.	
  The	
  reserve	
  pool

  • 1. ©  Gyan  Research  and  Analytics  Pvt.  Ltd.,  2015 1 Policy  News   ❑ Gujarat  government  plans  to  relocate  INR  100  crore  for  electricity  infrastructure     Gujarat  government  plans  to  undertake  upgradation  of  existing  electricity  infrastructure  project  such  as   poles  and  transformers  at  a  cost  of  INR  100  crore  to  facilitate  developmental  works  by  various  urban  and   semi-­‐urban   civic   bodies   in   the   state.   The   reason   behind   the   project   is   to   overcome   major   problem   of   shifting   electricity   poles,   overhead   wires   and   transformers   while   undertaking   various   works   related   to   expansion  of  roads,  streets  or  construction  of  a  building.  The  government  assures  of  fresh  allocations  that   will  be  made  for  this  project  every  year.   Industry  News   ❑ India  to  build  a  strategic  uranium  reserve   India  is  working  on  forming  a  strategic  uranium  reserve  to  confirm  its  atomic  power  reactors  not  to  face   shortage  of  the  nuclear  fuel.  The  reserve  pool  is  expected  to  be  between  5,000  MT  to  15,000  MT  which  can   last  for  5-­‐10  years.  Further,  a  proposal  has  been  sent  to  the  cabinet  for  approval  of  stocking  5,000  MT  of   uranium.   India   registered   a   record   production   of   over   1,252   MT   of   uranium   this   year   which   is   close   to   double  the  annual  fuel  requirement  of  atomic  reactors  in  the  country.  For  the  past  one  year,  India  has  been   purchasing  uranium  from  different  countries  including  Australia  and  Canada.     ❑ India's  clean  energy  targets  way  ahead  of  others   By   2022,   India   aims   175   GW   of   renewable   energy   capacity,   including   100   GW   of   solar,   60   GW   of   wind   power,  10  GW  of  biomass-­‐fired  power  and  5  GW  of  small  hydro  power.  This  is  way  ahead  of  the  UN  global   goal  leading  the  world  in  the  area  of  sustainable  energy  from  renewable  sources.     ❑ West  Bengal  government  transfers  hydro  projects  to  NHPC   West  Bengal  government  has  handed  over  state's  four  hydro  power  projects  with  a  combined  capacity  of   about  293  MW  to  National  Hydroelectric  Power  Corporation  (NHPC).  Teesta  Low  Dam  V,  Teesta  Low  Dam  I   &  II  combined,  Teesta  Intermediate  Stage  and  Rammam  Stage  I,  all  located  in  District  Darjeeling  of  West   Bengal  are  the  four  projects  which  were  so  far  under  West  Bengal  State  Electricity  Distribution  Company   Limited.  The  plan  is  to  turn  NHPC  into  a  mega  hydro  power  entity  with  a  market  value  of  worth  INR  51,000   crore  and  a  government  stake  of  up  to  81  per  cent.   ❑ Cabinet  reviews  Punatsangchu  I  hydro  project  cost  to  INR  9,375.58  crore     Union  cabinet  approved  revised  cost  of  1,200  MW  Punatsangchu  I  hydro  power  project  in  Bhutan  to  INR   9,375.58  crore.  Price  escalation  of  generation  work  (29.7  percent),  change  in  scope/design  (9.82  percent),   inadequate  provision  (8.38  percent)  and  additional  requirement  (21.09  percent)  along  with  stabilisation   measure  for  the  right  bank  (6.32  percent),  increase  in  cost  of  transmission  work  (7.99  percent)  and  other   causes  (17.12  percent)  are  the  factors  behind  revision  of  the  project  cost.   Energy  News July  18,  2015  –  July  24,  2015
  • 2. ©  Gyan  Research  and  Analytics  Pvt.  Ltd.,  2015 ❑ Solar  power  may  become  cheaper  than  thermal  in  2-­‐3  years   According  to  India  Ratings  and  Research,  Solar  power  is  likely  to  reach  INR  4-­‐4.5  per  unit  by  FY18  and  is  expected  to  become  as   cheap  as  conventional  thermal  energy  over  the  next  two  to  three  years.  A  decline  in  capital  costs  such  as  solar  modules  and   other   balance   of   plant   equipment,   increase   in   efficiency,   shift   towards   large   solar   photovoltaic   projects   leading   to   the   economies  of  scale  and  lower  return  expectations  by  developers  are  expected  to  be  the  driving  factors.   ❑ India  ranks  third  for  LEED  green  buildings  with  1,883  certified  projects  among  top  10  countries     India  ranks  third  for  Leadership  in  Energy  &  Environmental  Design  (LEED)  certified  buildings  on  the  US  Green  Building  Council's   annual  ranking  of  the  top  10  countries.  Canada  leads  the  top  10  list  with  a  total  of  4,814  LEED  certified  and  registered  projects   followed  by  China  with  2,022  such  projects.  India  came  third  with  1,883  LEED  certified  projects.  Ascendas  IT  Park  in  Chennai,   Thomson  Reuters  Bangalore  Campus,  Ericsson  Tower  in  Gurgaon,  Nirlon  Knowledge  Park,  Building  6  in  Mumbai  and  the  DLF  IT   Park  in  Chandigarh  are  the  projects  that  got  LEED  certification  in  2014.     ❑ 52  MW  solar  plant  in  Maharashtra  commissioned  by  Welspun  Renewables     Welspun   Renewables   commissioned   Maharashtra's   first   mega   solar   capacity   under   the   public-­‐private   partnership   model.  Baramati,  one  of  the  highest  radiation  receiving  regions  is  the  location  of  the  52  MW  solar  power  plant.  The  project  will   generate  enough  green  energy  to  power  2,40,000  households.   ❑ Vestas  gets  46  MW  turbine  order  for  Indian  wind  project     Vestas  Wind  Systems  received  a  46  MW  turbine  order  for  a  wind  project  in  India.  The  order  was  for  23  units  of  the  V110-­‐2.0   MW  turbine  for  a  wind  farm  project  in  Karnataka.    The  contract  includes  delivery,  installation  and  commissioning  of  the  wind   turbines  along  with  the  15-­‐year  service  agreement.   ❑ Tata  Power's  Mundra  power  plant  generates  6,296  MUs  in  first  quarter     Coastal  Gujarat  Power  Limited  generated  6,296  Million  Units  (MUs)  in  the  June  quarter  from  its  4,000  MW  Mundra  power   plant.  The  ultra  mega  power  plant  located  at  Mundra  in  Kutch  district  has  generated  62,945.77  MUs  from  2012  to  2015  and   recently  completed  three  years  of  operation.  This  power  plant  supplies  electricity  to  eight  distribution  companies  in  Gujarat,   Rajasthan,  Maharashtra,  Haryana  and  Punjab.    Further,  the  company  plans  to  scale  up  generation  capacity  to  18,000  MW,  with   20-­‐25  percent  coming  from  clean  and  green  sources.   ❑ 66  kV  gas  insulated  switchgear  sub-­‐station  commissioned  by  TPDDL     66  kV  gas  insulated  switchgear  substation  at  Prashant  Vihar,  Rohini  has  been  commissioned  by  Tata  Power  Delhi  Distribution   Limited  (TPDDL).  The  substation  is  expected  to  benefit  50,000  consumers  including  institutional,  domestic  and  commercial  ones   and  is  commissioned  in  nine  months.

  • 3. ©  Gyan  Research  and  Analytics  Pvt.  Ltd.,  2015 ❑ ABB  India  gets  INR  125  crore  to  upgrade  3  substations     ABB  India  has  been  awarded  INR  125  crore  by  Power  Grid  Corporation  of  India  for  the  expansion  of  three   substations  by  the  use  of  gas-­‐insulated  switchgear  in  Vadodara,  Manesar  and  Malerkotla.  This  is  the  part  of   INR  175  crore  awarded  to  ABB  Group  in  the  second  quarter  of  2015.    Further,  ABB  India  also  plans  to  carry   out  the  installation,  testing  and  commissioning  of  the  substations  on  site.     ❑ Blacklisted  Chinese  firms  getting  contracts  give  stiff  competitions  to  local  power  players     Blacklisted   Chinese   companies   have   won   several   contracts   to   supply   equipment   to   the   Indian   power   transmission  sector,  giving  local  firms  rigid  competition  by  beating  them  on  price.  Supply  of  sub-­‐standard   products  by  the  Chinese  firms  has  been  warned  by  the  local  companies.  Indian  companies  such  as  ABB,   Siemens  and  Alstom  T&D  manufacture  the  gas-­‐insulated  substation  which  is  a  critical  component  in  the   power   transmission   space   and   is   facing   stiff   competition   from   cheaper   Chinese   and   South   Korean   imports.  The  local  transmission  and  distribution  equipment  manufacturing  sector  is  operating  at  less  than   70  percent  of  its  capacity  due  to  this  reason.   ❑ India's  crude  oil  output  fell  marginally  at  3.1  MT     India's   crude   oil   production   has   fallen   by   less   than   1   percent   to   3.1   million   tonne   (MT).   The   country   produced  3.101  MT  of  crude  oil  in  June  2015  as  compared  to  3.121  MT  in  June  2014.  India's  crude  oil   production  was  0.86  percent  down  at  9.3  MT  during  the  April-­‐June  quarter  of  the  current  fiscal.  Natural  gas   output  was  down  at  2.72  billion  cubic  meters  by  nearly  6  percent.     ❑ Tata  Power  commissions  Radio  Frequency  Metering  Project     India’s  largest  radio  frequency  metering  projects  has  been  commissioned  by  Tata  Power  in  an  attempt  to   provide  error  free  bills  and  eliminate  the  entry  process  of  a  utility  person  in  premises  for  meter  reading.   The  company  has  lowered  the  carbon  footprint  involved  in  a  typical  meter  reading  exercise  and  has  plans   to   save   man-­‐hours   and   cost   of   manual   meter   reading   and   data   punching.   Tata   Power's   project   was   supported  by  Larsen  &  Toubro,  Cyan  Technology  (UK)  and  Neosilica  Technologies  (Hyderabad).     ❑ RIL  to  relinquish  two  gas  discoveries  off  east  coast     Reliance  Industries  Limited  (RIL)  has  chosen  to  carry  out  government  prescribed  Drill  Stem  Test  (DST)  under   limited   cost   to   retain   its   three   finds   and   decided   to   relinquish   two   gas   discoveries   off   the   east   coast.   Discoveries  D-­‐40  in  NEC-­‐25  block  off  the  Odisha  coast  and  D-­‐31  in  KG  D6  block  will  be  relinquished  by   RIL.  However,  discoveries  D-­‐32  in  NEC-­‐25  block  and  D-­‐29  and  D-­‐30  in  KG  D6  block  will  undergo  DST.    The   budget  for  doing  the  DST  was  approved  at  block  oversight  panel  within  the  government  prescribed  cost  of   USD  15  million  each. 3 Energy  News July  18,  2015  –  July  24,  2015
  • 4. ©  Gyan  Research  and  Analytics  Pvt.  Ltd.,  2015 4 Energy  News July  18,  2015  –  July  24,  2015 Investment  News   ❑ IOC  plans  to  invest  INR  1,000  crore  to  raise  stake  in  CPCL     Indian   Oil   Corporation   (IOC)   plans   to   invest   INR   1,000   crore   for   raising   stake   in   Chennai   Petroleum   Corporation  Limited  (CPCL)  by  subscribing  to  preferential  issue.  Share  capital  of  the  company  have  been   decided  to  increase  to  INR  1,400  crore  from  INR  400  crore  by  the  shareholders  of  CPCL.  Approval  of  raising   borrowing  limit  to  INR  8,000  crore  for  both  domestic  and  foreign  borrowings  as  well  as  to  borrow  INR   3,000  crore  through  a  debenture  issue  on  private  placement  basis  to  fund  expansion  plans  has  also  been   received.     ❑ Cairn  India  plans  to  merge  with  Vedanta  by  March  2016   Cairn   India   plans   to   merge   with   its   parent   company   Vedanta   resources   by   March   2016.   The   merger   is   decided  to  be  done  via  a  share  swap.  It  plans  to  give  the  parent  access  to  Cairn's  INR  17,000  crore  cash   which  is  likely  to  help  it  pare  debt.     ❑ SunEdison  ties  up  with  Tata  Power  to  supply  solar  power  to  light  up  Delhi     SunEdison  signed  a  long-­‐term  agreement  with  TPDDL  to  supply  180  MW  of  solar  power  a  year  in  Delhi.     SunEdison  plans  to  supply  90  MW  of  power  to  the  distribution  company  at  a  delivered  tariff  of  INR  6.49   per  kWh  and  the  remaining  90  MW  at  a  delivered  tariff  of  INR  6.52  per  unit.  The  plant  is  expected  to   eliminate  emission  of  carbon  dioxide  of  about  3,00,000  metric  tonne  per  year.
