1. 3D Construction Challenge
My task was to make a 3D shape with the marshmallows. I used toothpicks to represent
edges and marshmallows to represent the vertices of the shape.
Based on the clues given, I solved the problems by creating the following models:
Cube, which had 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices
Octagonal prism, which had 7 faces, 12 edges and 16 vertices
Pentagonal pyramid, which had 6 faces, 10 edges and 6 vertices
Hexagonal pyramid, which had 7 faces, 12 edges and 7 vertices
Square pyramid, which had 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices
Pentagonal prism which had 6 faces, 15 edges and 10 vertices
It was fun to play with the marshmallows. It was challenging to look at the marshmallows
because my lips were getting wet from hunger! This task made me think about super hard
math problems because the problems were hard. For example, Take 24 toothpicks and 16
marshmallows and put them together. What 3D shape have you built?
During this task, I learned more about shapes and how you a make them in a variety of ways.
I still have questions about shapes, such as how to solve pi problems, and I want to know
more about pyramids and prisms. Next, I would like to investigate how to do algebra.
