1. 3D Construction Challenge
My task was to make 3D shape by using marshmallows and toothpicks.
I used toothpicks to represent edges and marshmallows to represent vertices.
Based on the clues given, I solved the problems by creating the following models:
Cube which had 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices
Square pyramid which had 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices
Pentagonal prism which had 7 faces, 15 edges and 10 vertices
Pentagonal pyramid which had 6 faces, 10 edges and 6 vertices
Hexagonal pyramid which had 7 faces, 12 edges and 7 vertices
Octagonal pyramid which had 10 faces, 24 edges and 16 vertices
It was fun to make shapes with marshmallows but it was sticky. It was challenging to
think about shape that has 24 edges and 16 vertices because we didn’t have enough
toothpicks and marshmallows to make this shape. This task made me think hard about
3D shapes.
During this task, I learned more about the name of 3D shapes such as pentagonal prism
and icosahedron. I still have questions about what is the name of the 3D shape of soccer
ball. Next, I would like to investigate the volume of a sphere.
