1. 3D Construction Challenge
My task was to use toothpicks and marsh marshmallow to make 3D shapes. I used
toothpicks to represent edges and marshmallows to represent vertices.
Based on the clues given, I solved the problems by creating the following models:
Cube, which had 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices
Square pyramid, witch had 5 faces, 8 vertices and 5 edges.
Pentagonal pyramid, witch had 6 faces, 6 vertices and 10 edge.
Octagonal prism, witch had 10 faces, 16 vertices and 24 edges.
Pentagonal prism, witch had 7 faces, 10 vertices and 15 edge.
Hexagonal pyramid, witch had 7 faces, 7 vertices and 12 edges.
It was fun to make the shape because I can use the toothpicks and marshmallows
instead of toothpicks and blue tack. It was challenging to make the shape balance
because I only have two hands and there were many sticks. This task made me think
that I’m in the haven of marshmallow because the whole room had a marsh mallow
smell. And learning shapes are fun and useful.
During this task, I learned more about shapes such as perimeter, area, volume and
surface area.
I still have questions about how did people first think about area and perimeter? Next, I
would like to investigate what is the volume of the school.
