Literary Devices In The Stranger, By Albert Camus
In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to create a moment of inward reflection from readers,
in which we reflect on just how absurd our existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor
characters as well. Camus's use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the conclusion of where the irony was displayed.
Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose
the hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own selves and more importantly to display the
fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we accept our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he's suggesting we be more like Meursault.
Examples of this would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother's body, and Meursault continuously refusing. Camus does this
to make people think: what exactly is wrong with Meursault not wanting to see his dead mother? Through this technique camus shows societal
expectations of how people are supposed to mourn lost, and certain responses to lost are deemed abnormal. Thus Meursault's lack of grief automatically
made him an outsider. Other uses of irony can be shown through Meursault's interactions with the chaplain, and the authority involved in his criminal
case played out later on in the

Rio Grande And South Padre Island Case Study
"I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would
stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively, instead of skeptically and dictatorially." ―
E.B. White. In accommodation to the environment, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants that are being planned to be built in between Brownsville
and Port Isabel should be cancelled to keep the Rio Grande and South Padre Island a highly admired tourist site. Liquefied natural gas is natural gas in
a liquid form, produced by cooling the gas to –259В°F through a process called liquefaction. Even though there is a low percentage (5%–15%) LNG
will catch a fire, the LNG's vapor can explode when hemmed in a constricted space (Valley Green Space).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The massive industrialization and pollution that LNG will bring could erode important economic drivers such as commercial fishing, shrimping, and

Additionally, the beautiful tourist South Padre Island is at bay, and the tourists who come by to take in the beauty always need someone to help them
discover the sights and wonders the island has to offer. This is where the tourists play a key in employment in the RGV. If the LNG project sets forth,

it will continue to degrade the environment by emancipating pollutants and toxins into

Brave New World By Aldous Huxley
In the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the character John the Savage is brought from his homeland of Malpais to London. When he
arrives he finds that this world is very different from his own. Saddened and angered by the injustice of the society, he attempts to isolate himself from
the world. John the Savage's experience of being exiled from Malpais was enriching in that it showed him the true nature of the Other Place and
alienating in that he was separated from his culture and not able to integrate into the new one. This illuminates the meaning of the work in that it shows
the negative side of the "utopian" society. John the Savage's exile from his homeland was enriching in that it showed him the true nature of the Other

Don't you even understand what manhood and freedom are?'" (Huxley 212–213) This quote shows how he became aware of the injustice of the system.
His discovery of the true nature of the Other Place was an enriching experience. It allowed him to no longer wonder about what the outside world
was like and to no longer hold an idea in high regard that was not worthy of it. The truth is better than the lie and in learning the truth, John was
enriched by his experience of being cut off from his homeland. John the Savage's exile from his homeland was alienating in that it separated him
from his culture and he was not able to integrate into the new one. John the Savage grew up in a society with very different views from that of the
society in London. It was very difficult for him to not be around other people who shared similar ideas with him. This is exemplified by the quote
"'... Listen, Lenina; in Malpais people get married." "Get what?" The irritation had begun to creep back into her voice. What was he talking about
now? "For always. They make a promise to live together for always." "What a horrible idea!" Lenina was genuinely shocked." (Huxley 191) He was
unable to connect with anyone on a deep level because of this intrinsic difference between them. Therefore, this experience was alienating for him
because he was set apart from the rest of the society. The experience was so alienating that John the Savage removed himself from the society around
him. "'I shall go away

A Short Story : The Story Of Moana And The Ruose
Moana
Moana is the daughter of the chief who leads a Polynesian tribe. The tribe lived on an island which the people survived from. Islanders used what
they had on the island to survive. Moana's father and mother raise her to one day lead her people. As a tribe, they made baskets from the leaf, drink
the water from the coconuts, and fished within the rife for food to eat. The chief showed his daughter how to take on the responsibility. If she could
she lead her people successfully she would put her stone on the mountain. This was an ancient ritual passed down from the chiefs who came before
them. Moana knew the task that lied ahead, but Moana was a daring and strong–willed teenager who want to sail the ocean. Going beyond the rife was
forbidden for all islanders, due to the chiefs past experience. Moana had a passion for the ocean and was chosen by the ocean to reunite a small
greenstone. Her Grandmother, Tala also felt her passion and knew her calling as she would tell the tale of the heart of Te Fiti to all the young
children. Moana was able to share her feelings with her grandmother as she was someone who was very sacred to her heart. Tala showed her a secret
cave, and told her to go in and bang the drums. Inside she found boats and discovered the history of her ancestors were voyagers. Her grandmother
explains why they stopped voyaging, due to Maui stealing the sacred heart which the heart would create life between the islands. She also tells Moana

The Pros And Cons Of Firefighter Grieving
"On average there are there are 70 on duty firefighter fatalities in the United States every year." ("Firefighter Fatalities in the United States"). This
means that an on duty firefighter dies about every 5 days. Firefighters have enough stress with their everyday job, then you add losing a fellow
member it puts another level to that stress. Imagine two siblings go out to play basketball like they do multiple times everyday and one of them
end up dying in a freak accident. Horrible right? It is the same thing with firefighters. They go out on a call. There is a freak accident and there is not
a great outcome. "The death of a fellow firefighter is like losing a brother or sister because you are living with them for almost one–third of your life."
(Johnson). Firefighters are one big family. There has always been firefighter fatalities. The questions has always been: How to deal with one when it
happens. What is the right amount of time off for grieving? Should there be mandatory counseling? Who do we bring in to support the firefighters? The
problem is that every fatal incident... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grieving is a large part of the healing process. When there is any death anyone who is close with the person grieves. The closer someone is to the
person the longer it may take for them to finish the grieving process. Giving firefighters mandatory time off for grieving is another way to deal with
firefighter fatalities. "Failure to provide emotional and psychological support may result in the resurgence of emotions during stressful situations,
which may have a detrimental impact on safe operations." (Theil, 19). Providing time for grieving is important. The problem is that the fire department
has to run and it cannot run without the firefighters. Giving mandatory grieving works in theory but in reality there would not be anyone to run the fire

Hospital-Based Healthcare Providers: Article Analysis
Article Analysis "Exploring the Phenomenon of Spiritual Care Between Hospital Chaplains and Hospital Based Healthcare Providers," written by
Janie J. Taylor, Jennifer L. Hodgson, Irina Kolobova, Angela L. Lamson, Natalia Sira, and David Musick, is a study involving hospital chaplains
(HCs) and hospital–based healthcare providers (HBHPs) to discover how spirituality influences the well–being of HBHPs. The research for this study
was concentrated in six areas: chaplain availability, HCs building relationships, chaplain integration; chaplains meet providers' needs; providers
appreciate chaplains; and barriers to chaplains' services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). The first theme, chaplain availability, concerns the type of
services provided by the HCs. Their role is to improve the awareness of the chaplains' availability to the HBHPs. The services they provide are not
limited to just work related issues but also to spiritual and personal problems the HBHPs may face in their daily lives (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). ...

These obstacles include divergent cultural beliefs, HCs constraints due to time–consuming responsibilities, HCs lack of training and experience, and
HBHPs lack of awareness of available services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 101). The primary purposes of this article are to emphasize that more than just
the patient benefits from spirituality in healthcare and to highlight the advantages and rewards HBHPs receive with spiritual services. In the past, the
focus of spirituality in healthcare was geared towards the patient's experience; little attention was focused on the HBHPs experience. This is the first
study to concentrate on the HBHPs' negative and positive experiences (Taylor et al., 2015, pp. 91–93), and is important because it identifies areas of
improvement for HCs and adjustments needed in the training

Brave New World Literary Devices
In the book, Brave New World, the author, Aldous Huxley, creates and alternated world in the 1930's to show us how political and society were
during that year. There was a lot of cruel, violence, segregations compare to the world in BNW. He also uses many literary devices to tell use what
his society looks like during the 1930's. During this time the WWii was going on and this was a big deal to the world because there was a lot of dramas
and other dangerous things going on. Some of those devices are simile, details, metaphor...
One major event was people being considerate about others instead on themselves. One of the literary devices that Aldous Huxley uses is metaphor to
give us a description of what is happening to Lenina and how she acts, also help her remind her who the real Lenina is. "Lenina liked the drums.
Shutting her eyes she abandoned herself to their soft repeated thunder, allowed it to invade her consciousness more and more completely, till at last
there was nothing left in the world but that one deep pulse of sound. It reminded her reassuringly of the synthetic noises made at Solidarity Services
and Ford's Day celebrations. "Orgy–porgy," she whispered to herself.
These drums beat out just the same rhythms " (107–8). Lenina is thinking deep about herself and what she is really like. She also think about her inner
self and listening to the repeated beats over and over it reminds her of the Solidarity Services. Aldous Huxley is comparing this to today's

There are seven official sacraments in the Catholic Church, but actually, there are an unlimited number of sacraments in the universe. The love of
God is not limited to the seven official sacraments. The love of God is infinite, and He can show it to us anyway he chooses. Over the course of
my life, God has revealed himself to me during my travels. During the summer of 2016, I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica with my
mother, and my grandmother was able to join us as well. We went on a tour, with about two dozen strangers. A few native Costa Ricans guided us
through the country. We were able to interact with new people, see the wildlife, and explore the country. This is what life is about, traveling to new
places, meeting new people, exploring other cultures. We could not have gone on such an amazing trip if God had not allowed us to do so. It was
truly a blessing. God was present in all of the trees, the animals, the rivers and oceans, and all of the people. I remember going ziplining on that trip. It
was the longest zipline in the country, one line was over half a mile long. It was high in the mountains, you could go very fast, and you could see
for miles. You could even see the ocean, even though we weren't near the coast. I was very high up, and the wind in my face wasexhilarating.
Everytime I go ziplining, I think about the long fall to the ground, yet I feel no fear. Science kept me from falling, but science only works because

Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World kindles many questions about today's social order and considers the questionable society exposed in the book.
Throughout the book, Huxley presents a world much different than the one we are accustomed to. Some question whether the novel portrays a
dystopian or utopian civilization. There are a variety of advantages and disadvantages of Huxley's world paralleled to the one we live in today. Two
major disadvantages considered consist of the lack of family, monogamy, and social organization; as well as the need for soma in lieu of happiness, or
rather the 'fake' happiness it compromises. In contrast, the benefits of the society are limited. These consist of concepts behind the elimination of
conflicts, commitments, and worries. Everybody observes the story from a different perspective. Knowing the gains and losses of each society, which
pertain to the family system, monogamy, feelings of world peace, elimination of commitment, and the exclusion of disease, will assist a person in
concluding their belief on whether each culture is flawless or severely corrupt.
Some may argue that Huxley's removal of the normal family system and replacement of it with a polygamous arrangement is an enthusiastic one.
However, the concept behind monogamy and family is a beautiful one. Monogamy is strength, it gives people a home and a person they can trust and
believe in with their whole heart. With polygamy arises drama, distrust, hatred, lust, and jealousy.

Brief Summary Of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World
The book starts in the beginning with how the process of making human beings is.The process which could be compared with how they make
consumer goods on an assembly line, they mass produce people the same way they would mass produce an object.
A normale egg would become ninety–six people. "One egg, one embryo, one adult" (Brave New World, page 7). The egg would with a spesial process
called "Bokanovsky's Process be able to grow to become more human begins "the egg will bud, will proliferate, will divide. From eight to ninety–sex
buds, and every bud will grow into a perfectly formed embryo, and every embryo into a full–sizes adult. Making ninety–six human begins grow where
only one grew before. Progress" (Brave New World, page 7).

Brave New World Theme Analysis Essay
"'God isn't compatible with machinery and scientific medicine and universal happiness.'" So says Mustapha Mond, the World Controller for Western
Europe in Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World. In doing so, he highlights a major theme in this story of a Utopian society. Although the people
in this modernized world enjoy no disease, effects of old age, war, poverty, social unrest, or any other infirmities or discomforts, Huxley asks 'is the
price they pay really worth the benefits?' This novel shows that when you must give up religion, high art, true science, and other foundations of modern
life in place of a sort of unending happiness, it is not worth the sacrifice.
True, the citizens of this "brave new world" do enjoy many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One might be led to believe that this society is a perfect place to live, since all the inhabitants are eternally happy. There are no wars, pain, or suffering,
all definite pluses, yet readers must not judge too quickly.
Everything comes at a price, and the price that is paid for the new order is sadly high, costing the Utopians the benefits of high art, true religion,
real science, and family life, which all have been removed to promote stability. "'Othello's better than those feelies.' 'Of course it isВ…But that's the
price we have to pay for stability. You've got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art. We've sacrificed the high art. We
have the feelies and the scent organ instead.' 'But they don't mean anything,'" (Huxley 226) This conversation shows one of the tradeoffs made.
Stories like Othello are inspired by strong emotions, and Utopia has done away with them. Now, there is nothing to write about, and if something was
written along the lines of Othello it might cause people to think, causing instability. The movies people see are idiotic and plotless, based solely on
sensations. Religion as we know it has been done away with also, as Mustapha Mond showed by his comments quoted at the beginning of this paper.
Religion usually involves self–denial, and that is contrary to everything the new society is based on. With instant gratification

SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE CHAPLAINCY DUTIES FROM 1200
–1600AD Chaplains kept the faith by holding on to the "be, know, do concept
between the 1200s and the 1600s AD. Being a practitioner of faith meant applying the rites commanders and the papacy authorized as a mission
requirement. Knowing meant priests were to have a thorough knowledge of the rites of penance, mass, final unction, and viaticum. [1] Doing simply

Weakness Once governments saw the potential for victory for its political gain, the chaplaincy began to weaken and divide. For example, the War in
England as written in pamphlets described the role of the chaplain during that time. Their job in this role was to sustain men who had to face their
neighbors in a war over political and religious differences. [3] Some chaplains were used to control the spread of heterodox religious views, while
others left the military in pursuit of doing what is right, and preaching the true message of God. This departure from the military added to the
weakness of the chaplaincy. Another weakness, chaplains were wrongly accused or labeled as evil, when it fact, laymen were the culprits. It was
laymen such as Henry Denne and Paul Hobson who gave the army a reputation for radical sectarianism; the further association of religious radicals with
the chaplains was almost entirely independent of the chaplains themselves[4].
Opportunities
Valuable lessons learned about chaplains during this given time period is that the need to administer God in truth to all people provided a means of
opportunity for the chaplaincy. When shortages of chaplains occurred, governments selected priests with no military affiliation. And for chaplains who
stayed behind in their parishes, governments imposed special instructions as well. For example, Benedict the Levite insisted that clerics celebrate
masses, carry out

"In fact', said Mustapha Mond, 'you're claiming the right to be unhappy.''All right then,' said the Savage defiantly, 'I'm claiming the right to be
unhappy." (Huxley 240) John went to Mustapha Mond and requested to leave with Bernard to iceland and Mustapha Mond replied saying that was
like asking to have the right to be unhappy so John said he wants them all. Even though Mustapha denied his request to go to iceland with Bernard
John left in the helicopter and was dropped off at an abandoned lighthouse. John was discovered one day whipping himself by reservation guards
they tried to stop him from whipping himself but he frightened them so they left but sent a reporter, John kicked the reporter and ended up in the
paper giving away where he was staying so one day dozen of people showed up chanting for him to do the whip stunt again and to whip himself.
"What do you want with me?" "The whip," replied a hundred voices confusedly. "Do the whipping stunt. Let's see the whipping stunt." (Huxley 256)
John ended up doing it and in the end he killed himself, he was different than everyone else, he saw things people didn't dare to see for themselves.
In conclusion John was just an outsider, left alone, no one included him in things because he was different but at the same time he was just like
everyone else. John was born like everyone else at the reservation but they still didn't accept him because of his family. All John had was his mother
Linda. John was like everyone else externally but internally he was diverse and that's what made John

It's been said, "Behind every cloud, there is a rainbow."
To most, living on a tropical island sounds like paradise or something out of a dream. People often fantasize about tropical islands filled with warm
breezes, swaying coconut trees, sandy beaches, and exotic animals. Unfortunately I know that those dreams are not an accurate reflection of most
tropical islands. I know because when I was six years old my parents decided that our family of five should become missionaries in the South Pacific.
In 2006, without much notice or discussion, we moved from South Carolina to the distant land of Tutuila, American Samoa, an unorganized,
unincorporated territory of the United States located deep within the South Pacific. We lived there for four years, and they were the most interesting
and formative years of my life.
Before moving to Samoa, we lived in a typical middle class neighborhood with picket fences as white as our neighbors. My interactions were always
with people that looked like me and talked like me. In Lexington, I was the majority, in Samoa I was the minority. While in Samoa, our house was
filled with mosquitoes, harmless geckos, friendly interns, scurrying rats, a hilarious uncle, and flying termites. I met Kiwis and Australians, Samoans
and Tongans, transgendered men and alcoholics. Unlike my time in South Carolina, in the South Pacific, I was the peculiar one. My family was
wealthier than most people at my church, who were mainly Samoan, yet not as wealthy as most

The Discount Travel Websites Of Kayak.com And Sidestep.com
With the country in the financial shape that it is presently in, consumers are looking for any and every way to save a buck. Therefore, thoughts of a
recession on the horizon makes travelers reconsider their summer vacations. This brings up methods that families and the like can still have some form
of vacation. Enter the discount travel websites of Kayak.com and Sidestep.com. Before making a comparison, it is best to take a look at both sites
individually. Kayak Kayak.com is a website that enables potential travelers the opportunity to search for flights, hotels, cars, and cruises from one
convenient site. This eliminates the need for a consumer to visit multiple sites to gather this information. It also offers deals that are available for
users to take advantage. One is able to look at pricing for any flight available to a destination, and is able to check the price for it on several different
sites, including Orbitz, CheapTickets, and even the airline itself. This site offers a listing, a matrix, and a chart in which to view the selected flights.
For hotels it offers a listing, a map, or photos. The other unique thing about the site it that it has sliders allow one to move them left or right to narrow
the options. One also can remove check marks to omit specific carriers or star rating from the search results. The one downside of using this for flights
is that it does not include Southwest Airlines in search results. Sidestep Sidestep.com is another website that

Red Headed Hawaii
Most people imagine Hawaii to be paradise. An island Utopia where the rich and upper middle class come on vacation. However just like most places
Hawaii has its own share of poverty, economic problems, environmental issues, high crime rate, and high unemployment rates. The Red Headed
Hawaiian by Chris McKinney gives a more realistic and insightful view on what life in Hawaii is like for the Hawaiians. The book was published May
1st, 2014, it is a first–hand account of what life in Hawaii is really like. It tells of the struggles and hardships native Hawaiians have to face just to make
a living. It describes the challenges they overcome along with the brave souls who overcome them.
The story of the red–headed Hawaiian is about a local who one day decides that he wants to become a doctor. The book follows his journey about what
it is like to grow up in rural Hawaii as well as what it takes to be a doctor and what it means to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This outlook was refreshing and surprisingly accurate, I see the conditions that others live in and it is sad but true and I'm glad that this book shows
that because many don't know about it and view this island as some sort of Untouchable Paradise when in fact nothing could be further from the
truth. I believe that the author meant to write about what Really like living in Hawaii. I believe that this was captured in the first person narrative
of someone's rags to riches story that talked about hard work as well the general spirit of Aloha that encompasses all aspects of life in Hawaii. I
believe what Rudy Pauana was trying to say with this is that Hawaii is like any other place while it is beautiful and it is a paradise there are
problems that you can't ignore. The book talks about how someone may not have the easiest start to light but contained in a row if they choose may

you can enjoy it while being on the beach. It is really a great time to enjoy with your family and just ride along the beach hearing the sound of the
ocean. One of my other favorite activities that I love to visit every summer when we have the whole family down is Schlitterbahn Waterpark. It
has amazing rides for the family to enjoy and cool down on a hot summer day. They recently opened an indoor pool which is really cool just in
case you want a take a break from the hot sunny day. South Padre Island also has many tours you can enjoy with your family. Theirs charters that

Examples Of Religion In Lord Of The Flies
Religion in Chaotic Societies Such as Brave New World and Lord of the Flies Differences dominate the varying cultures and societies of the world.
Differences appear everywhere, from cultural norms to forms of government. Most, if not all civilizations rely on some form of religion. Whether a
society relies on a singular extraterrestrial force as a god, or many gods who exist as one, each culture relies on religion to calm the chaotic nature of the
world. The 20th century novels, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Brave New Worldby Aldous Huxley, both use the of Christ–like archetypes,
upon which societies depend when they fall into chaos, in an attempt to calm the disarray of everyday reality. Human nature naturally gravitates
towards a religious figure when reality becomes overwhelming. Selflessness and sympathy build the archetype of a Christ–like figure. Christ–like
figures work to aid the society, demonstrating selflessness and generosity. In Lord of the Flies, Simon remains selfless in the face of adversity. While
the other boys obsess and fight over hunting and fire, Simon helps take care of the littluns. To the littluns, Simon acts as a Christ–like figure: "Simon
found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched
hands"(Golding 56). Golding shows how Christ–like figures demonstrate selflessness to others, providing the best for other people rather than for

Analyzing Webster's Definition Of A Vacation
Taking time to escape reality is indeed necessary for finding serenity within yourself. Homosapiens often do this by removing themselves from their
normal setting and going to an unfamiliar area. This is referred to as a getaway, recreation, or a sojourn. These three terms essentially all mean the
familiar term "vacation." Webster's definition of vacation is simple:
1: an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling.
A definition such as this one is quite broad and can imply that there are many scenarios which can be classified as a vacation. Read further for
enlightenment.
How to Identify Vacations
To even be considered a vacation, the period of time spent away from home setting must be, at least, one weekend. Weekend getaways allow just
enough time for the mind and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is usually done by families with infuriating small children that whine about being hungry or having to use the restroom for the fifth time in
approximately one hour. The most common road trips would be driving through all fifty states, visiting each national park, driving from coast to
coast or along one coast. To cope with the amount of driving required for this type of vacation, families will often stay at a hotel for the night after a
day's worth of driving. If done by a group of friends with no responsibility of youngsters, driving non stop throughout the night is typically done by
switching drivers every three hours or so.
These are only a few ways to undergo vacations. As said earlier, the definition of vacation is vaguely stated and can implies that there are many
scenarios in which it can be classified. Whether you call it a getaway, recreation or a sojourn, take a vacation. Go as many places as possible. One
can always make money. One can't always make memories. An anonymous person inspirationally said "We travel not to escape life, but for life not to

Brave New World By Aldous Huxley
Imagine a world where complete control is in the hands of the government. Imagine a world where science, literature, religion, and even family, do
not exist. Imagine a world where citizens are conditioned to accept this. This is exactly how the world is portrayed in Brave New World by Aldous
Huxley. The focus of the World Stateis on society as a whole rather than on individuals. Some characters from the novel have a harder time accepting
the conditioning. Through these characters, we learn the true cost of a government–dominated society. In Brave New World, Huxley conveys that a
totalitarian government will provide happiness and peace by abolishing individuality and free thinking. In a Brave New World, the government creates
a society that provides prosperity and unity even after revoking individuality. The characters are conditioned to be happy and accept their place in
society. They are assigned a caste position which determines their physical features and also their job. The control extends to the color of clothes they
wear and the transportation they use. In this society, citizens are not allowed to be an individual. It is difficult to believe that citizens in any society
could accept this amount of control and remain content. Why are there no revolutions by the people? Why don't they question their placements and
roles in society? Why don't the citizens accost the government? Mustapha Mond explains to John, Helmholtz, and Bernard why the government
believes the

Freedom Vs. Enslavement
The topic I chose to examine in this novel in freedom vs enslavement. I chose this topic because in the first two chapters it becomes evident that the
people have no say in what they do, they are born with a specific purpose. The Hatcheries and the idea of scientifically creating a baby in a factory
and conditioning them to act a certain way were introduced. The ten controllers have total freedom and rule the world, but people in the Gamma,
Beta, Delta, and Epsilon castes are slaves of the controllers, conditioned into whatever person the controllers want or would benefit the economy. The
Alphas have a bit of freedom because they were conditioned to have a higher intellect which makes it hard for them to accept all of the rules of
society, but they were still made that way because the controllers wanted them to be. My tentative thesis is: Enslavement from the beginning of your
existence creates an illusion of freedom. There are several supports for this thesis in the beginning of the novel when the Hatcheries are explained.
Some embryos are conditioned by going through hot tunnels followed by cold tunnels paired with the discomfort of hard X–rays to ensure that they
grow up hating the cold. These embryos are predestined to move to the tropics and work as miners or acetate silk spinners or steel workers. The Delta
babies are conditioned with loud noises and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone in the novel so far seems pretty content with the way things work and they are conditioned to not rebel or question authority. I predict that
there will be a person from the Alpha caste that will stand up though and question the controllers processes. Another challenge I may face is trying to
follow and understand the society that they are living in where babies and embryos are produced in a factory and can be conditioned into whatever the

The Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history. The explosion was cause by a surge
of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon rig's platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were
being use to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17
others. The explosion caused a massibe leak in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time
around 210 million gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried to activate a blowout prevent that was part of the
Horizon rig's design. This mechanism was supposed to close off any way to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the pressure form
the gas and oil that cause the explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened a few miles from the "Loop Current" which is a large current of
warm water in the Gulf that covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from the oil to spread (Treudaburg & Gramling, 2010). Over the
next couple of months they tried a variety of different caps to try to stem the flow of oil but they were generally unsuccessful and oil still leaked
through. It wasn't until July that the flow was finally stopped by a functional blowout preventer cap (Pallardy, 2015).

How Is Bernard Presented In Brave New World
Huxley uses contrast to reveal distinctive features of a character. In his famous novel, Brave New World, the protagonist, Bernard Marx, is revealed to
the reader through various contrasting characters. Bernard is an atypical Alpha Plus male in the Society. For example, he is physically different from
Helmholtz Watson and Henry Foster; he and Helmholtz also contrast personality–wise; and the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning (the DHC) is
not only the professional foil of Bernard, but also has a different mindset than him.
Firstly, Bernard's physical appearance is quite different from other Alpha Plus males. Helmholtz is quite tall, has a large frame and physique, making
females attracted to him. He is "every centimeter an Alpha Plus," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The DHC knowingly leaves Linda at the Savage Reservation. He knows that had he not done so, he may be stuck in Malpais if he missed his flight
home. Had he continued searching for her, he may have been accused of being too attached to her––– a costly indiscretion. The DHC thinks his
decision through, compared to Bernard who barely conforms, scarcely meeting Society's standards. Bernard does not enjoy "having" people
constantly, which is conformist behaviour in the Society, nor does he participate in all recreational activities, such as obstacle golf. Therefore, the
DHC conforms all the time compared to Bernard who is not interest in doing so, preferring to spend much of his leisure time either alone or with his

Personal Narrative-Padre Island
I jumped on my bed at 12 in the morning. I can't wait for tomorrow! It's going to be a tremendous day. My family; Dad, Mom, little brother Andrew
and I, are going to South Padre Island early in the morning! I couldn't stop thinking about it. What am I going to be able to do there? How will the
hotel look like? Pause. The list can go on and on, but first, I need some sleep. It's going to be a great time with my family.
Ring! Ring! My alarm rang at 5:15 am. I enthusiastically ran downstairs trying to let my legs get moving. The first thing I see is loads of bags and
luggage. "Good morning, Ashley!" Mom and Dad cheered at me. I waved my hand and wondered about how they could be still efficacious with all the

hotel. Then, we grabbed our heavy, bulky, luggage and brought them to our room to the 2nd floor. After we unpacked, we were exhausted and all

The Researcher, The Mentor, The Galvanizer
Sherwin John Carlquist is a botanist and a photographer who understood the basic principles of wood anatomy and evolution through his research in
Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (Sherwin, (a)). Sherwin's studies of dicotyledonous wood evolution has directed him to pursue understanding the
evolutionary patterns of islands (Edward & Roy, 1997). This was the turning point where Sherwin's work finally been acknowledged after thirty long
years, on 1991. He had a grand total of 24 principles governing long–distance dispersal and evolution on islands acknowledged by other botanists (CA).

Analysis Of Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World
The identity of a person is often considered to be synonymous with his culture, whether it be to a distinct nation, race, or way of thought. However,
one of the greatest conflicts a person can endure is one with himself, when he is caught between the innate desire to belong and a sense of self and
difference from the society that he belongs to. In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, such is the case with Bernard Marx. Marx faces the immense
dilemma of not fitting in in the greatly socialized and cohesive civilization that he lives in, the "Brave New World." Despite how much Bernard
disdains this world, which he identifies as brainwashed and infantile, he cannot help desiring to belong. Huxley brilliantly contrasts Marx's hatred
of his civilization with his eventual plea to remain a part of it after his exile is sealed in order to highlight the natural desire of man to belong,
regardless of how different he may feel from his surroundings. While most people in Bernard 's world belong to one of a handful of groups, and are
mere copies of identical clones, Bernard is entirely unique. Despite belonging to the highest caste of "Alphas" in his society, Bernard lacks both the
physical and psychological characteristics of any Alpha. Unlike everyone else in his caste, Bernard is very small, lacks the appreciation for trivial
games like "electromagnetic golf," and most seriously, believes there is more to an individual than pleasure–seeking and his role as a component of

How Is Soma Used In Brave New World
When reading the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, it is unmistakably evident that the use of stimulants (soma) is the leading source of the
society's happiness. Drugs and medicine are used in both societies in many comparable and contrasting ways. Our "soma" takes a different form than it
does in Brave New World, but a lot of the results are the same. The most common similarity between the use of drugs in the two societies is the
purpose of the drug is use. This motive is for escaping reality. In Brave New World, all citizens in the society take "soma" whenever they are
stressed or emotional. This medication keeps all negative thoughts off a person's mind, basically creating a blindness to everything around them
that is corrupt. Linda, one of the characters in the book who was from the Brave New World but lived with the savages, shows a little bit of how
soma is used in today's society when she becomes alcohol dependent. When she no longer had access to soma, she turned to alcohol (also referred to
as "mescal" in the novel) as an escape from all the atrocious things she had to experience at the savage reservation (Brave New World 125). In today's
society people, especially young people, use alcohol and other drugs to mask the unhappiness they have in their lives. Teenagers consider ... Show more

Literary Devices and Characters in Camus' The Stranger

  • 1. Literary Devices In The Stranger, By Albert Camus In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to create a moment of inward reflection from readers, in which we reflect on just how absurd our existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor characters as well. Camus's use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the conclusion of where the irony was displayed. Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose the hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own selves and more importantly to display the fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we accept our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he's suggesting we be more like Meursault. Examples of this would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother's body, and Meursault continuously refusing. Camus does this to make people think: what exactly is wrong with Meursault not wanting to see his dead mother? Through this technique camus shows societal expectations of how people are supposed to mourn lost, and certain responses to lost are deemed abnormal. Thus Meursault's lack of grief automatically made him an outsider. Other uses of irony can be shown through Meursault's interactions with the chaplain, and the authority involved in his criminal case played out later on in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Rio Grande And South Padre Island Case Study "I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively, instead of skeptically and dictatorially." ― E.B. White. In accommodation to the environment, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants that are being planned to be built in between Brownsville and Port Isabel should be cancelled to keep the Rio Grande and South Padre Island a highly admired tourist site. Liquefied natural gas is natural gas in a liquid form, produced by cooling the gas to –259В°F through a process called liquefaction. Even though there is a low percentage (5%–15%) LNG will catch a fire, the LNG's vapor can explode when hemmed in a constricted space (Valley Green Space).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The massive industrialization and pollution that LNG will bring could erode important economic drivers such as commercial fishing, shrimping, and beach and nature tourism" (Valley Green Space). Since part of RGV is next to the Gulf ofMexico, many jobs in that area are associated with fishing. Additionally, the beautiful tourist South Padre Island is at bay, and the tourists who come by to take in the beauty always need someone to help them discover the sights and wonders the island has to offer. This is where the tourists play a key in employment in the RGV. If the LNG project sets forth, "beautiful coastal prairie and dense brush...will be bulldozed and paved over" (Valley Green Space). Aside from exterminating the habitat for its place, it will continue to degrade the environment by emancipating pollutants and toxins into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Brave New World By Aldous Huxley In the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the character John the Savage is brought from his homeland of Malpais to London. When he arrives he finds that this world is very different from his own. Saddened and angered by the injustice of the society, he attempts to isolate himself from the world. John the Savage's experience of being exiled from Malpais was enriching in that it showed him the true nature of the Other Place and alienating in that he was separated from his culture and not able to integrate into the new one. This illuminates the meaning of the work in that it shows the negative side of the "utopian" society. John the Savage's exile from his homeland was enriching in that it showed him the true nature of the Other Place.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Don't you even understand what manhood and freedom are?'" (Huxley 212–213) This quote shows how he became aware of the injustice of the system. His discovery of the true nature of the Other Place was an enriching experience. It allowed him to no longer wonder about what the outside world was like and to no longer hold an idea in high regard that was not worthy of it. The truth is better than the lie and in learning the truth, John was enriched by his experience of being cut off from his homeland. John the Savage's exile from his homeland was alienating in that it separated him from his culture and he was not able to integrate into the new one. John the Savage grew up in a society with very different views from that of the society in London. It was very difficult for him to not be around other people who shared similar ideas with him. This is exemplified by the quote "'... Listen, Lenina; in Malpais people get married." "Get what?" The irritation had begun to creep back into her voice. What was he talking about now? "For always. They make a promise to live together for always." "What a horrible idea!" Lenina was genuinely shocked." (Huxley 191) He was unable to connect with anyone on a deep level because of this intrinsic difference between them. Therefore, this experience was alienating for him because he was set apart from the rest of the society. The experience was so alienating that John the Savage removed himself from the society around him. "'I shall go away ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a tribe, they made baskets from the leaf, drink the water from the coconuts, and fished within the rife for food to eat. The chief showed his daughter how to take on the responsibility. Going beyond the rife was forbidden for all islanders, due to the chiefs past experience. Moana had a passion for the ocean and was chosen by the ocean to reunite a small greenstone. Her Grandmother, Tala also felt her passion and knew her calling as she would tell the tale of the heart of Te Fiti to all the young children. Moana was able to share her feelings with her grandmother as she was someone who was very sacred to her heart. Tala showed her a secret cave, and told her to go in and bang the drums. Inside she found boats and discovered the history of her ancestors were voyagers. Her grandmother explains why they stopped voyaging, due to Maui stealing the sacred heart which the heart would create life between the islands. She also tells Moana the Te Ka's darkness ... • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Firefighter Grieving "On average there are there are 70 on duty firefighter fatalities in the United States every year." ("Firefighter Fatalities in the United States"). This means that an on duty firefighter dies about every 5 days. Firefighters have enough stress with their everyday job, then you add losing a fellow member it puts another level to that stress. Imagine two siblings go out to play basketball like they do multiple times everyday and one of them end up dying in a freak accident. Horrible right? It is the same thing with firefighters. They go out on a call. There is a freak accident and there is not a great outcome. "The death of a fellow firefighter is like losing a brother or sister because you are living with them for almost one–third of your life." (Johnson). Firefighters are one big family. There has always been firefighter fatalities. The questions has always been: How to deal with one when it happens. What is the right amount of time off for grieving? Should there be mandatory counseling? Who do we bring in to support the firefighters? The problem is that every fatal incident... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Grieving is a large part of the healing process. When there is any death anyone who is close with the person grieves. The closer someone is to the person the longer it may take for them to finish the grieving process. Giving firefighters mandatory time off for grieving is another way to deal with firefighter fatalities. "Failure to provide emotional and psychological support may result in the resurgence of emotions during stressful situations, which may have a detrimental impact on safe operations." (Theil, 19). Providing time for grieving is important. The problem is that the fire department has to run and it cannot run without the firefighters. Giving mandatory grieving works in theory but in reality there would not be anyone to run the fire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Hospital-Based Healthcare Providers: Article Analysis Article Analysis "Exploring the Phenomenon of Spiritual Care Between Hospital Chaplains and Hospital Based Healthcare Providers," written by Janie J. Taylor, Jennifer L. Hodgson, Irina Kolobova, Angela L. Lamson, Natalia Sira, and David Musick, is a study involving hospital chaplains (HCs) and hospital–based healthcare providers (HBHPs) to discover how spirituality influences the well–being of HBHPs. The research for this study was concentrated in six areas: chaplain availability, HCs building relationships, chaplain integration; chaplains meet providers' needs; providers appreciate chaplains; and barriers to chaplains' services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). The first theme, chaplain availability, concerns the type of services provided by the HCs. Their role is to improve the awareness of the chaplains' availability to the HBHPs. The services they provide are not limited to just work related issues but also to spiritual and personal problems the HBHPs may face in their daily lives (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These obstacles include divergent cultural beliefs, HCs constraints due to time–consuming responsibilities, HCs lack of training and experience, and HBHPs lack of awareness of available services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 101). The primary purposes of this article are to emphasize that more than just the patient benefits from spirituality in healthcare and to highlight the advantages and rewards HBHPs receive with spiritual services. In the past, the focus of spirituality in healthcare was geared towards the patient's experience; little attention was focused on the HBHPs experience. This is the first study to concentrate on the HBHPs' negative and positive experiences (Taylor et al., 2015, pp. 91–93), and is important because it identifies areas of improvement for HCs and adjustments needed in the training ... • 8. Brave New World Literary Devices In the book, Brave New World, the author, Aldous Huxley, creates and alternated world in the 1930's to show us how political and society were during that year. There was a lot of cruel, violence, segregations compare to the world in BNW. He also uses many literary devices to tell use what his society looks like during the 1930's. During this time the WWii was going on and this was a big deal to the world because there was a lot of dramas and other dangerous things going on. Some of those devices are simile, details, metaphor... One major event was people being considerate about others instead on themselves. One of the literary devices that Aldous Huxley uses is metaphor to give us a description of what is happening to Lenina and how she acts, also help her remind her who the real Lenina is. "Lenina liked the drums. Shutting her eyes she abandoned herself to their soft repeated thunder, allowed it to invade her consciousness more and more completely, till at last there was nothing left in the world but that one deep pulse of sound. It reminded her reassuringly of the synthetic noises made at Solidarity Services and Ford's Day celebrations. "Orgy–porgy," she whispered to herself. These drums beat out just the same rhythms " (107–8). Lenina is thinking deep about herself and what she is really like. She also think about her inner self and listening to the repeated beats over and over it reminds her of the Solidarity Services. Aldous Huxley is comparing this to today's Sawyer 2 ... • 10. Reflection Paper There are seven official sacraments in the Catholic Church, but actually, there are an unlimited number of sacraments in the universe. The love of God is not limited to the seven official sacraments. The love of God is infinite, and He can show it to us anyway he chooses. Over the course of my life, God has revealed himself to me during my travels. During the summer of 2016, I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica with my mother, and my grandmother was able to join us as well. We went on a tour, with about two dozen strangers. A few native Costa Ricans guided us through the country. We were able to interact with new people, see the wildlife, and explore the country. This is what life is about, traveling to new places, meeting new people, exploring other cultures. We could not have gone on such an amazing trip if God had not allowed us to do so. It was truly a blessing. God was present in all of the trees, the animals, the rivers and oceans, and all of the people. I remember going ziplining on that trip. It was the longest zipline in the country, one line was over half a mile long. It was high in the mountains, you could go very fast, and you could see for miles. You could even see the ocean, even though we weren't near the coast. I was very high up, and the wind in my face wasexhilarating. Everytime I go ziplining, I think about the long fall to the ground, yet I feel no fear. Science kept me from falling, but science only works because God makes it work. If God ... • 11. Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World Aldous Huxley's Brave New World kindles many questions about today's social order and considers the questionable society exposed in the book. Throughout the book, Huxley presents a world much different than the one we are accustomed to. Some question whether the novel portrays a dystopian or utopian civilization. There are a variety of advantages and disadvantages of Huxley's world paralleled to the one we live in today. Two major disadvantages considered consist of the lack of family, monogamy, and social organization; as well as the need for soma in lieu of happiness, or rather the 'fake' happiness it compromises. In contrast, the benefits of the society are limited. These consist of concepts behind the elimination of conflicts, commitments, and worries. Everybody observes the story from a different perspective. Knowing the gains and losses of each society, which pertain to the family system, monogamy, feelings of world peace, elimination of commitment, and the exclusion of disease, will assist a person in concluding their belief on whether each culture is flawless or severely corrupt. Some may argue that Huxley's removal of the normal family system and replacement of it with a polygamous arrangement is an enthusiastic one. However, the concept behind monogamy and family is a beautiful one. Monogamy is strength, it gives people a home and a person they can trust and believe in with their whole heart. With polygamy arises drama, distrust, hatred, lust, and jealousy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Brief Summary Of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World The book starts in the beginning with how the process of making human beings is.The process which could be compared with how they make consumer goods on an assembly line, they mass produce people the same way they would mass produce an object. A normale egg would become ninety–six people. "One egg, one embryo, one adult" (Brave New World, page 7). • 13. Brave New World Theme Analysis Essay "'God isn't compatible with machinery and scientific medicine and universal happiness.'" So says Mustapha Mond, the World Controller for Western Europe in Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World. In doing so, he highlights a major theme in this story of a Utopian society. Although the people in this modernized world enjoy no disease, effects of old age, war, poverty, social unrest, or any other infirmities or discomforts, Huxley asks 'is the price they pay really worth the benefits?' This novel shows that when you must give up religion, high art, true science, and other foundations of modern life in place of a sort of unending happiness, it is not worth the sacrifice. True, the citizens of this "brave new world" do enjoy many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One might be led to believe that this society is a perfect place to live, since all the inhabitants are eternally happy. There are no wars, pain, or suffering, all definite pluses, yet readers must not judge too quickly. Everything comes at a price, and the price that is paid for the new order is sadly high, costing the Utopians the benefits of high art, true religion, real science, and family life, which all have been removed to promote stability. "'Othello's better than those feelies.' 'Of course it isВ…But that's the price we have to pay for stability. You've got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art. We've sacrificed the high art. We have the feelies and the scent organ instead.' 'But they don't mean anything,'" (Huxley 226) This conversation shows one of the tradeoffs made. Stories like Othello are inspired by strong emotions, and Utopia has done away with them. Now, there is nothing to write about, and if something was written along the lines of Othello it might cause people to think, causing instability. The movies people see are idiotic and plotless, based solely on sensations. Religion as we know it has been done away with also, as Mustapha Mond showed by his comments quoted at the beginning of this paper. Religion usually involves self–denial, and that is contrary to everything the new society is based on. With instant gratification ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Weakness Once governments saw the potential for victory for its political gain, the chaplaincy began to weaken and divide. For example, the War in England as written in pamphlets described the role of the chaplain during that time. Their job in this role was to sustain men who had to face their neighbors in a war over political and religious differences. [3] Some chaplains were used to control the spread of heterodox religious views, while others left the military in pursuit of doing what is right, and preaching the true message of God. This departure from the military added to the weakness of the chaplaincy. Another weakness, chaplains were wrongly accused or labeled as evil, when it fact, laymen were the culprits. It was laymen such as Henry Denne and Paul Hobson who gave the army a reputation for radical sectarianism; the further association of religious radicals with the chaplains was almost entirely independent of the chaplains themselves[4].
  • 15. Opportunities Valuable lessons learned about chaplains during this given time period is that the need to administer God in truth to all people provided a means of opportunity for the chaplaincy. When shortages of chaplains occurred, governments selected priests with no military affiliation. People often fantasize about tropical islands filled with warm breezes, swaying coconut trees, sandy beaches, and exotic animals. I know because when I was six years old my parents decided that our family of five should become missionaries in the South Pacific. • 28. Examples Of Religion In Lord Of The Flies Religion in Chaotic Societies Such as Brave New World and Lord of the Flies Differences dominate the varying cultures and societies of the world. Differences appear everywhere, from cultural norms to forms of government. Most, if not all civilizations rely on some form of religion. Whether a society relies on a singular extraterrestrial force as a god, or many gods who exist as one, each culture relies on religion to calm the chaotic nature of the world. The 20th century novels, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Brave New Worldby Aldous Huxley, both use the of Christ–like archetypes, upon which societies depend when they fall into chaos, in an attempt to calm the disarray of everyday reality. Human nature naturally gravitates towards a religious figure when reality becomes overwhelming. Selflessness and sympathy build the archetype of a Christ–like figure. Christ–like figures work to aid the society, demonstrating selflessness and generosity. In Lord of the Flies, Simon remains selfless in the face of adversity. While the other boys obsess and fight over hunting and fire, Simon helps take care of the littluns. To the littluns, Simon acts as a Christ–like figure: "Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands"(Golding 56). Homosapiens often do this by removing themselves from their normal setting and going to an unfamiliar area. This is referred to as a getaway, recreation, or a sojourn. These three terms essentially all mean the familiar term "vacation." Webster's definition of vacation is simple: 1: an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling. • 31. Brave New World By Aldous Huxley Imagine a world where complete control is in the hands of the government. Imagine a world where science, literature, religion, and even family, do not exist. Imagine a world where citizens are conditioned to accept this. This is exactly how the world is portrayed in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. The focus of the World Stateis on society as a whole rather than on individuals. Some characters from the novel have a harder time accepting the conditioning. Through these characters, we learn the true cost of a government–dominated society. In Brave New World, Huxley conveys that a totalitarian government will provide happiness and peace by abolishing individuality and free thinking. In a Brave New World, the government creates a society that provides prosperity and unity even after revoking individuality. The characters are conditioned to be happy and accept their place in society. They are assigned a caste position which determines their physical features and also their job. The control extends to the color of clothes they wear and the transportation they use. In this society, citizens are not allowed to be an individual. It is difficult to believe that citizens in any society could accept this amount of control and remain content. Why are there no revolutions by the people? Why don't they question their placements and roles in society? Why don't the citizens accost the government? Mustapha Mond explains to John, Helmholtz, and Bernard why the government believes the ... • 32. Freedom Vs. Enslavement The topic I chose to examine in this novel in freedom vs enslavement. I chose this topic because in the first two chapters it becomes evident that the people have no say in what they do, they are born with a specific purpose. The Hatcheries and the idea of scientifically creating a baby in a factory and conditioning them to act a certain way were introduced. The ten controllers have total freedom and rule the world, but people in the Gamma, Beta, Delta, and Epsilon castes are slaves of the controllers, conditioned into whatever person the controllers want or would benefit the economy. The Alphas have a bit of freedom because they were conditioned to have a higher intellect which makes it hard for them to accept all of the rules of society, but they were still made that way because the controllers wanted them to be. My tentative thesis is: Enslavement from the beginning of your existence creates an illusion of freedom. There are several supports for this thesis in the beginning of the novel when the Hatcheries are explained. Some embryos are conditioned by going through hot tunnels followed by cold tunnels paired with the discomfort of hard X–rays to ensure that they grow up hating the cold. These embryos are predestined to move to the tropics and work as miners or acetate silk spinners or steel workers. The Delta babies are conditioned with loud noises and... • 35. The Horizon Oil Rig Explosion The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history. The explosion was cause by a surge of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon rig's platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were being use to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. The explosion caused a massibe leak in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time around 210 million gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried to activate a blowout prevent that was part of the Horizon rig's design. This mechanism was supposed to close off any way to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the pressure form the gas and oil that cause the explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened a few miles from the "Loop Current" which is a large current of warm water in the Gulf that covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from the oil to spread (Treudaburg & Gramling, 2010). Over the next couple of months they tried a variety of different caps to try to stem the flow of oil but they were generally unsuccessful and oil still leaked through. It wasn't until July that the flow was finally stopped by a functional blowout preventer cap (Pallardy, 2015). Impacts on Coral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. How Is Bernard Presented In Brave New World Huxley uses contrast to reveal distinctive features of a character. In his famous novel, Brave New World, the protagonist, Bernard Marx, is revealed to the reader through various contrasting characters. Bernard is an atypical Alpha Plus male in the Society. For example, he is physically different from Helmholtz Watson and Henry Foster; he and Helmholtz also contrast personality–wise; and the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning (the DHC) is not only the professional foil of Bernard, but also has a different mindset than him. Firstly, Bernard's physical appearance is quite different from other Alpha Plus males. Helmholtz is quite tall, has a large frame and physique, making females attracted to him. He is "every centimeter an Alpha Plus," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The DHC knowingly leaves Linda at the Savage Reservation. He knows that had he not done so, he may be stuck in Malpais if he missed his flight home. Had he continued searching for her, he may have been accused of being too attached to her––– a costly indiscretion. The DHC thinks his decision through, compared to Bernard who barely conforms, scarcely meeting Society's standards. Bernard does not enjoy "having" people constantly, which is conformist behaviour in the Society, nor does he participate in all recreational activities, such as obstacle golf. Therefore, the DHC conforms all the time compared to Bernard who is not interest in doing so, preferring to spend much of his leisure time either alone or with his only friend, ... • 37. Personal Narrative-Padre Island I jumped on my bed at 12 in the morning. I can't wait for tomorrow! It's going to be a tremendous day. My family; Dad, Mom, little brother Andrew and I, are going to South Padre Island early in the morning! I couldn't stop thinking about it. What am I going to be able to do there? How will the hotel look like? Pause. The list can go on and on, but first, I need some sleep. It's going to be a great time with my family. Ring! Ring! My alarm rang at 5:15 am. I enthusiastically ran downstairs trying to let my legs get moving. The first thing I see is loads of bags and luggage. "Good morning, Ashley!" Mom and Dad cheered at me. I waved my hand and wondered about how they could be still efficacious with all the packing. Andrew is on the couch napping with a sausage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I quickly changed into comfortable clothes and woke my brother up (which probably took five minutes) and ate breakfast. I hopped into our rental car, which was presumably small. Three layers of soft, feathered blankets over me, and probably holding onto five different head pillows. "I can't believe we get to go to South Padre Island for three days!" I yelled to my family. It takes about eight hours to arrive at our hotel, so I definitely got carsick. The good news was that we got to eat fast food! Andrew and I got to sleep a lot while the parents got to drive. We arrived after 7 pm to our hotel. Then, we grabbed our heavy, bulky, luggage and brought them to our room to the 2nd floor. After we unpacked, we were exhausted and all but we still had the stamina to go down to the beach and take a view on the glazing ocean water. It looked very delicate like a clear foil was laid on top of the water. I doused my feet in the cool, numb water. While digging my hands deep in the soft, cushy, sand, I could feel all the grains go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. John Malquist Research Paper The Researcher, The Mentor, The Galvanizer Sherwin John Carlquist is a botanist and a photographer who understood the basic principles of wood anatomy and evolution through his research in Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (Sherwin, (a)). Sherwin's studies of dicotyledonous wood evolution has directed him to pursue understanding the evolutionary patterns of islands (Edward & Roy, 1997). This was the turning point where Sherwin's work finally been acknowledged after thirty long years, on 1991. He had a grand total of 24 principles governing long–distance dispersal and evolution on islands acknowledged by other botanists (CA). Early Days Sherwin John Carlquist was born on July 7th, 1930 in Los Angeles, son of Robert William and Helen (Bauer) Carlquist (prabook). At the age of 22, Sherwin received his undergraduate bachelor degree at University of California, then decided to do a PHD on philosophy, and graduated at 1956. While Sherwin was taking on his PHD, at the last year, 1955 – 1956, Sherwin was awarded a postdoctoral study from Harvard University, there were only Three NSF fellowships during graduate and postdoctoral years (Sherwin, (a)). That same year, Sherwin started his teaching career as an associate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 39. Analysis Of Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World The identity of a person is often considered to be synonymous with his culture, whether it be to a distinct nation, race, or way of thought. However, one of the greatest conflicts a person can endure is one with himself, when he is caught between the innate desire to belong and a sense of self and difference from the society that he belongs to. In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, such is the case with Bernard Marx. Marx faces the immense dilemma of not fitting in in the greatly socialized and cohesive civilization that he lives in, the "Brave New World." Despite how much Bernard disdains this world, which he identifies as brainwashed and infantile, he cannot help desiring to belong. Huxley brilliantly contrasts Marx's hatred of his civilization with his eventual plea to remain a part of it after his exile is sealed in order to highlight the natural desire of man to belong, regardless of how different he may feel from his surroundings. While most people in Bernard 's world belong to one of a handful of groups, and are mere copies of identical clones, Bernard is entirely unique. Despite belonging to the highest caste of "Alphas" in his society, Bernard lacks both the physical and psychological characteristics of any Alpha. Unlike everyone else in his caste, Bernard is very small, lacks the appreciation for trivial games like "electromagnetic golf," and most seriously, believes there is more to an individual than pleasure–seeking and his role as a component of ... • 41. How Is Soma Used In Brave New World When reading the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, it is unmistakably evident that the use of stimulants (soma) is the leading source of the society's happiness. Drugs and medicine are used in both societies in many comparable and contrasting ways. Our "soma" takes a different form than it does in Brave New World, but a lot of the results are the same. The most common similarity between the use of drugs in the two societies is the purpose of the drug is use. This motive is for escaping reality. In Brave New World, all citizens in the society take "soma" whenever they are stressed or emotional. This medication keeps all negative thoughts off a person's mind, basically creating a blindness to everything around them that is corrupt. Linda, one of the characters in the book who was from the Brave New World but lived with the savages, shows a little bit of how soma is used in today's society when she becomes alcohol dependent. When she no longer had access to soma, she turned to alcohol (also referred to as "mescal" in the novel) as an escape from all the atrocious things she had to experience at the savage reservation (Brave New World 125). In today's society people, especially young people, use alcohol and other drugs to mask the unhappiness they have in their lives. Teenagers consider ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
