Cyberbullying an Issue Left in the Shadows
Cyberbullying is a problem that has only come to light in the last few years. It has many different
effects on people; it can cause depression, suicidal thoughts and actions, and effects the way
students do in school. Cyberbullying is one of the top leading causes of suicide in teens and young
adults (Swearer). Cyberbullying is a major problem that this country needs to get under control
because it is leading to self–harm and suicide in teens and young adults. It causes an unsafe learning
environment, and the victim cannot get away from the bullying because the attackers stalk them
through social media accounts and their cell phones. So, how does ... Show more content on

That was until recently; the Washington Post "5 Myths about Bullying" by Susan Swearer states that
cyberbullying has attracted more attention since the suicide of Megan Meier, Megan was an eighth–
grader who had been bullied over the site MySpace; she committed suicide in 2006. This article also
talks about another suicide of freshman Tyler Clementi who committed suicide after his roommate
posted a video of sexual relations between him and another student (Swearer). Both of these
cyberbullying cases ended tragically and not all cases end this way, but it is the cases like these that
catch people's attention. Another article that brings light to the consequences of cyberbullying is an
article by Mudhamita Murgia, "Compassion is the Best Weapon Against Cyber Trolls". This article
shows that Prince William had never realized how bad the cyberbullying issue was until he had
children (Murgia). This article explains how cyberbullying is linked to self–harm; it says that people
who are involved in cyberbullying are more likely to watch videos about self–harm (Murgia).
Another consequence with cyberbullying is that it causes an unsafe learning environment. Even
though cyberbullying happens online or through some type of technology, other people have access
and can see what is being said and what is happening online. With everyone having access and being
able to see what is happening cyberbullying can easily be turned into face to face bullying causing

Suicide Mission Statement
Introduction My purpose is to educate people through the ages of 15 to 24, about suicidal awareness
and the help that is readily available. according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention,
suicide has now reached the second leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year–olds, (Suicide). As
an applied example of developmental psychology, suicide has researched studies that have linked
teenage suicide to issues with development or other problems that occur over a person's lifetime.
Some developmental issues have been recognized as anything from abuse, bullying, family
problems, to mental health disorders. Studies tend to focus on lifestyles of the specific group being

The heartache of losing someone dear to us is a pain that most of us will unfortunately experience at
some point in our lives. Comforting someone who has lost a loved one is not an easy endeavor, as
finding the right words to ease someone's pain is no easy feat. Now, imagine comforting a mom or
dad, sister or brother, spouse or child of someone who intentionally took their own life. Not only
does the family and friends of the suicide victim feel the shock of loss, but also they may feel that
they failed the victim in some way, did not see the signs, and feel guilt that they should have seen
this coming. Coupled with their own guilt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

us that not only family and friends are affected by suicide, but trained professionals in the area of
depression and mental illness have a hard time coping also.
STIGMA
Researchers have come across evidence that suicide survivors do indeed suffer from stigma in the
community. According to the Surgeon General's Report stigma is "manifested by bias, distrust,
stereotyping, fear, embarrassment, and/or avoidance of the stigmatized individual or group "(US
Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). Many religions specifically condemn suicide as a
sin, therefore suicide survivors may not be inclined to share the way their loved one passed away,
due to being ostracized. Instead of sharing their feelings, suicide survivors may be inclined to keep
their thoughts to themselves, isolating themselves from the outside world. The fear of being judged
by someone else's actions has taken away some of the survivors ability to grieve properly According
to one research "The suicidally bereaved group reported higher levels of General Grief, Loss of
Social Support, Stigmatization, Responsibility, Rejection, Self–Destructive Behavior and Unique
Reactions when compared to the other four bereavement groups (Silverman,Range &
Overholser, 1994). This study indicates that suicide survivors do indeed feel stigmatized,

Risk Essay
(1)
The following study discusses the risk & resilient factors in the life of Pauline, a 16 year old
NZ European/Maori teenager.
These factors involve her family life and its importance to her: the value of education and the
consequences of leaving school without qualifications; how activities such as church participation
can be helpful and the problems involved with having nothing to do; the effects of substance abuse;
early sexual involvement and its risks; the risk of suicide, suicide attempts & ideation. The
likely impacts of all of these factors on her current & future health status will be considered.

Pauline expresses that there is a lot of arguing with her Dad & Stepmother. This provides risk
for her as serious conflict between caregivers and children can put them at the risk of the problem
behaviours (Channing Bete Company 2004). The separation of a child's parents can put him/her at
risk especially if there are a lot of changes or that the child does not have a good relationship with at
least one parent (Burt 2002). It has been indicated in a study that girls in two parent families are less
likely to act out risky behaviours than those in single parent families. (M.D. Resnick et al 1993).
Children or adolescents who are well reasonably well adjusted after divorce nearly always come
from an environment where there is a firm, responsive, nurturing, supportive adult (Henderson
2002). Pauline's recent history is shows this sort of environment has not been there for her. A factor
that protects an adolescent is having an adult in her life she can trust and with whom she can
confide. The presence of an adult Mentor in an adolescents life helps reduce the participation in risk
taking behaviours. (Beier et al 2000). Pauline reports having a close relationship with her Aunty
Sarah who lives down the road with her Nan. She is able to confide with Aunty Sarah and feels close
to her. This is a significant protective factor for Pauline.

Celebrity Suicide
The Werther Effect of Two Celebrity Suicides: an Entertainer and a Politician, a study conducted by
psychologists in South Korea set out to observe the possible influence of the Werther Effect on the
general public. Researchers considered the cases of two celebrities of different public standing who
committed suicide within the span of one year and separately studied how their deaths, along with
the way that they were covered in the media, effected the suicide rates of the general population.
After taking into account factors that may impact the likelihood of imitative suicides, factors like
age and sex of the victim, the circumstances surrounding the individual at the time of their suicide,
and the method by which they ended their lives, researchers

Creativity vs. Psychological Health of Anne Sexton
A number of creative individuals have taken their own lives, including John Steinbeck, Ernest
Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, and many other writers. The large number of such cases suggests that
there may be a functional relationship between creativity and psychological health. This relationship
seems to vary across domains, with the rate of suicide especially high in certain groups of artists.
This may suggest that there may be something unique to those domains that either draws suicide–
prone persons into the domain or has an impact on the individual such that suicide is considered and
often attempted. When the poem writing by Anne Sexton entitled Her Kind you can closely compare
how Anne's mental health affected her poetry and how her poetry ... Show more content on

There is some evidence that Sexton's mother was jealous about her very early writing (Long).
Sexton did not have obvious creative aspirations, but instead seemed to think more about a family of
her own. At one point her mother accused her of plagiarism and had that particular writing
examined. It was deemed to be original, but many scholars suggest this incident affected Sexton's
relationship with her mother. Sexton's aunt on her father's side attempted suicide in early childhood,
lived several decades in an apparently stable marriage, and eventually committed suicide just before
she turned seventy. The family believes that if her aunt's suicide had any sort of influence on Sexton,
it was probably informational (e.g., the aunt modeling suicide) rather than genetic.
Biographers place great emphasis on Sexton's psychiatric treatment, which was significant as
evidenced by the content of her poetry. And, it is possible, given her nonconformism that Sexton
suffered from a borderline personality disorder. There are reports of her schizophrenic language, for
instance, as well as her tendency to enter some sort of trance at the end of her psychiatric treatment
sessions. She apparently did not want to end the sessions, perhaps because of emotional and social
needs. "Sexton's writing seems so personal she is often labeled a 'confessional' poet" Anne did not
agree with this title and preferred

Preventing Adolescent Suicide
More often than not adolescents are struggling to navigate their ever increasing stressful lives.
Mental illness, demands of school, social pressures along with domestic issues at home are causing
adolescents to commit suicide at an alarming rate. Often these individual acts of recklessness are not
acknowledged nationally unless they result in undeniable hostility. School shootings are a direct
result of these desperate unheard cries for help, culminating in mass killings causing permanent
injuries both physical and psychological in nature to those surrounding the event. Preventing and
predicting potential adolescent carnage is exceedingly important in the United States. The rate of
adolescent suicide is steadily increasing. According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are 600 successful sites in 38 states that are implementing the Teen Screen Schools and
Community program(Pelt, 2011). The Safety Program is an innovative 12 week trail rooted in social
economic cognitive behavioral models that blend parent and adolescent treatment sessions. This is a
family intervention program which was designed to increase safety and reduce suicide attempts.
Research has indicated adolescents with a family history of depression are 11 times more likely to
also suffer from depression. The duality of healing both parent and adolescent is a beneficial step
toward prevention and postvention. Combating Adolescent Suicide requires focused Cognitive
Behavioral Testing to predict the risk factors and traits that lead to suicide through diagnostic
measurements, reducing the likely hood of suicide among adolescents. In the past suicide in general
was perceived as a tact used by the weak to escape their situation. There were no methods of
prediction identified to prevent the event. As time progressed and suicide became an issue among
adolescents, medical staff and parents began to recognize patterns of behaviors that revealed if an
individual was at risk. In present day, research has grown to include community supported,
education based intervention and mental health services to combat the

Data Suicide Case Study
1.Based on the data in Figure 11.1, what would have happened if we had used a common regression
line to predict suicide risk in all three age groups?
If a common regression line was used to predict suicide risk in all three age groups, then it is likely
that the test would overpredict the risk of suicide in young clients, while underpredicting the risk of
suicide in older patients, for the middle age clients it would be a slope bias. This is just one reason
why sub groups should not be presented before test administration. If the test overpredicts then it is
unreliability because the inaccuracy serves as a threat to the reliability and validity of the research.

determined to be unfair still be an unbiased test?
Yes, a test that is determined to be biased can still be a fair test and a test that is determined to be
unfair can still be an unbiased test. Test bias and test fairness are two different things but they have
the availability to be potentially related concepts.
8.Describe the process of back translation. Why is back translation insufficient to guarantee
equivalence?
In the process of a back–translation test are translated by bilingual individuals from English to the
target language, the test is then retranslated back to English by other bilingual individuals. This
translation is insufficient to guarantee equivalence because it seems as though the test is being alter
to cater to the culture instead toward what it was initially developed. If a student was taking the
GRE in Spanish in hope of getting accepted in Yale, this is a disservice to Yale because the test is
being catered to the person culture which can greatly impact their score.
9.Provide an example of each of the four types of test equivalence identified by Lonner (1990).

Cyberbullying: Should There Be So Cruel And Inhumane?
Bullying comes in many different forms, physical, mental, verbal, cyber relational. But the most
common type of bullying is cyber bullying. Bullying is identified as a rude or hurtful action that is
repeatedly acted upon another thing. In the article 'Bullying Statistics' it states, "About 42 percent of
kids have been bullied while online with one in four being verbally attacked more than once." This
shows that too many kids have been bullied, just online. Some may shrug off the fact that so many
kids are being bullied, that they don't realized that some of those bully victims are committing
suicide. " Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400
deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100
suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7
percent have attempted it." This was found in the article "Bullying and Suicide" This proves that
bullying is becoming a bigger and bigger problem every year. A local woman was quoted on saying,
"I can't believe that people can be so cruel and inhumane." She said, talking about how kids would
bully her mentally disabled sister when they were little. Cyberbullying is the most dangerous and

Essay On Veteran Suicide
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, (2015) veterans comprise 22.2% of
all suicides. The suicide data reports of 2012 estimated 22 veterans commit suicide everyday (Kemp
& Bossate, 2012). Evidence–based studies show one of the major reasons behind the large number
of veteran suicides may be related to undiagnosed mental disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD). The Department of Veteran Affairs reports, "8 percent of the five million veterans
using VA care have been diagnosed with PTSD" (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2014). This
gap in mental health treatment among veterans negatively affects our nation as a whole. It is our

The Clay Hunt SAV Act is specifically catered toward the Veteran population and does not address
the mental health needs of civilians or active duty soldiers. Selective allocation is both beneficial

specific beneficiaries that need assistance the most. Statistically, veterans represent about 5%–6% of
all suicides in the United States yearly (Britton et al., 2012). While veteran suicide prevention
should be a priority in our country, a policy utilizing selective allocation may also discourage
veterans from seeking the help they need. True and accompanying researchers (2014) surveyed
veterans in order to identify their personal barriers to mental health treatment. They disclosed
feelings of anxiety and discomfort when seeking help due to the stigma associated with mental
health problems within military culture. The sentiments expressed by the veterans caused them to

Teen Suicide Essay
The rates of suicides in teens have been rising more and more over the past few years; with an
increase of over 300% in adolescents since the 1950s. (Miller 2009) Teens are basically crying out
for our helps, but it seems that we are ignoring them. But why? Do we not care? Or do we even
know what signs to be looking for? ANd average of 1,800 young people take their own lives and
almost 85,000 are hospitalized for attempts (CDC, 2008). With the statistics being this high we need
to take some action.

Not only is it showing them how to do it, it is showing them that they can become "popular" for
doing such acts to one's self. Warning signs for self–mutilation can be wearing covering clothing
when it is warm out, and not letting people touch where they might be cutting themselves. It was
once believed that people who self injure were just doing it for attention but recent studies have
proven otherwise. A quote from the research from the CASE study in Europe stated that "The
findings of this study show that adolescents who deliberately self–harm often report both cry of pain
and cry for help motives. The majority of youngsters wanted to get relief from a terrible state of
mind and/ or wanted to die with their act of self–harm. Although the study shows that there is also a
cry for help, this type of motive seems to be less prominent than the cry of pain, which is
inconsistent with the popular notion that adolescents deliberate self–harm is 'only' a cry for help
(Scoliers, 2009). With this knowledge we need to make sure we help the children who are not only
doing it to die or punish themselves but for the ones who are doing it for attention which is less than
a quarter of the time. Once we have been able to notice the some of the signs the next step is to
figure out what is the best way to approach this problem. Although this might seem easy it isn't,

The Role Of Clinical Depression In Teenagers
What did you do in the last one hundred minutes? Did you read a book, sit in traffic, or watch

cause of death for young adults ages 15 to 24. A whopping twenty percent of teens have depression
before they reach adulthood; about ten to fifteen percent suffer from depression at any given time.
These statistics may seem frightening to you, but it gets even worse: only thirty percent of teens are
treated for depression. Even with all the glorious medical institutions in America, there is still a lack
of a clearly defined treatment for depression. The typical process of diagnosis is as follows: the
teenager is taken to a psychiatrist, the teenager is diagnosed with clinical depression, the teenager is
prescribed antidepressants, and the teenager begins psychotherapy. Ideally, the first battery of drugs,

Childhood drowning is the leading cause of death from unintentional injury. It has also been
reported that in US, childhood drowning is the second leading cause of death among 1–19 years of
children and adolescents (Brenner et.al, 2001). According to Baker, O'Neill, Ginsburg & Li (1992),
drowning rates are reported to be higher in rural areas as compared to urban or sub–urban areas and
rural areas suffer more because of the lack of medical care and emergency treatment. It has been
reported that 60 to 90% of child drownings of less than 5 year old occurs in residential swimming

General Mills Suicides
Of all of the gun–related deaths in America, over 60% are suicides. As this problem continues to

problem that has yet to be discussed in mainstream conversation. As General Mills sales increase,

Social Environment And Suicide Analysis
In our day and age, even after the Supreme Court's ruling over same–sex marriage, those who

so that we may better prevent such circumstances in the future, and better plan interventions. The

The first was the importance of educating the public on what signs and symptoms to look for when
you believe someone may be suicidal. The second was that we need American adolescents and
young adults to become more aware of the experiences that people who are lesbian, gay or bisexual
have on a daily basis. While many people have become accepting of the LGB population, there are
still many cases where stigma seems to surround homosexuality, and that stigma can have a very
negative effect on the individual. My suggestion for society is that middle and high schools begin to
provide an educational course on the lesbian, gay and bisexual experience, so that students may find
a sense of empathy towards their LGB peers, and therefore allow these individuals to form stronger
and more fulfilling relationships. By forming stronger relationships, LGB individuals will have a
more positive support system and environment, which we learned has a tendency to reduce suicidal
attempts. A large portion of LGB individuals wait long periods of time to "come out" to their loved
ones for fear of upsetting them or having their relationship change because of this disclosure. By
educating our young men and women during their adolescent and early adulthood years, we may be
able to find that LGB individuals are able to come to terms with their sexual orientation at an earlier
stage, with less fear or anxiety of

Sports Effect On Suicide
Many studies have been done to find the benefits of athletics in high school students in years past,
but a more significant topic presently is the effect that it has on suicide prevention. Being a part of a
team gives social connections to students that they can lean on for anything they might need.
Whether it be for physical or emotional needs. Both teammates and coaches give moral support to
each other during both in and out of season. (Benefits of Sports) For ages 10–24 and 12–18, suicide
is the second preeminent cause of death in adolescents. (Youth Suicide) A study was done by a
group of people to analyze the correlation between athletic participation and suicidal tendencies.
The data used is based on the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey,

A Tragic Reality: Identifying Possible Personality Idiosyncrasies of Suicide among Adolescents The
rise in suicide rates among adolescents has sparked the debate of possible trends in personality traits
as potential signs for such an impending absolute act. Since as early as the time of Plato's existence
during the fourth century B.C.E., suicide has been acknowledged and examined from various
perspectives. The broad classification of suicide as a moralist, relativist, or libertarian view by the
mid–twentieth century, demonstrates the judgmental factor implemented in the discussion of suicide
while ignoring the psychological component. The moralist view held by prominent figures such as
Immanuel Kant in the eighteenth century, view humanity as an end and not a means to an end –
expanding on suicide as being inconstant with the greater good (Ho, 2014). In contrast, libertarians
consider suicide to be a well thought out choice which can often be substantiated as a ... Show more

Depression for most women is because their bodies are chemically unbalanced and the pills have
chemicals inside of them and when women take those antidepressants the pill helps balance out the
chemicals inside their bodies. Some people just don't believe they belong in this world and the
antidepressant supposably helps them, but studies have proved that most women are just addicted to
the pills. Even when doctors say they don't need the prescription anymore the people who were
taking them their bodies and their minds tell them that they need the pills but they don't. The
antidepressants have been also used as a drug, so doctors are not allowed to give out antidepressant
pills as much as they used to because there has been a series amount of overdoses with the
antidepressant pills. Studies have shown that the amount of overdoses were purposely because 1.
There was a suicide note or a letter. And 2. The people that just did it took too much purposely. So

Emotional Suicide amongst Teens
Suicide has become an extremely important social issue in our society. Did you know that suicide
rate is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States according to the A.F.S.P (American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention)? Teen suicide rates continue to increase every year according to
statistics. Today, teens are having mental struggles that can affect their everyday lifestyle and they
can't seem to find anyone to tell their problems to. They find that committing suicide is the answer
to their problems because majority of teens suffer from drug abuse, relationship problems, and the

Bully victims have the highest risk for suicide– related behavior of any groups that report
involvement in bullying. When a teen is bullied it makes them feel like they are worthless and no
one cares about them. For example, if a child is smarter than the other students they will call them
names such as "nerd" and "geek". Depending on the teen he or she may feel belittled by them.
Schools should supply more training to students to help them with communication skills and have
counselors who can be there for the student who is in need of sitting down and talking with them.
Not everyone can handle a bully so when to help them with communication skills and have
counselors who can be there for the student who is in need of sitting down and talking with them.
Not everyone can handle a bully so when you see someone in need of help with one you should try
your best to step in to defuse the situation at hand. It is great to take action in any way or form
because you could have just given the victim to stand up against them and get them out of their
suicidal mindset.
Additionally, what is teen depression? Teen depression is a common but serious mood disorder. It
causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping,
eating, or working. It is one of the main reasons why the suicide rate in teens has been skyrocketing

For example, someone who is thinking of teen suicide most likely will not ask for help. People
around that person should realize the signs of a suicidal person and should get them help. That
person most likely does not want to die, they more or less just want to stop hurting, whether it be
physical pain, or mental pain. If other people take the signs of suicide seriously, that could lead to
prevention of suicide. If people openly talk to the person thinking about suicide, that action could
save that person. Suicidal people are normally in so much pain that they believe that killing

Bullying: The Third Leading Cause Of Suicide
What is suicide? Suicide is "death caused by self–directed injurious behavior with an intent to die as
a result of that behavior" (Definitions: Self–directed Violence. (n.d.)). Many people throughout the
world have attempted and/or considered to commit suicide, sometime throughout his/her life.
Considering suicide is a big deal, because it shows that something in your life is so wrong, that you
are willing to take your own life away, just to feel better. According to the Center for Disease and
Control, " suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400
deaths per year. For every suicide among young people, it is estimated that there are at leas another
100 suicide attempts" (Young, 2012). There are things that happen in one's life, which they feel they

Depression could be linked to committing suicides as the number one leading cause for one to take
such consequences. It can be hard to tell when one is suffering from depression and knowing if the
person is considering self–harm. Suicides should be taken seriously even if taken as a joke. There
are different factors of suicides but should not be taken lightly. Suicide has three different
approaches which include; threatening, attempting, and committing. Individuals that fall in the
threatening suicide approach make their actions straight forward and vibrant. Thio, Taylor, and
Schwartz state "these individuals want to live rather than die, since their suicide threats are intended
as a means of achieving some objective in life" (Thio et al, 2013, p. 145). The individuals tend to
carry out these actions of threats if objectives are met. Attempting suicide are expressed their moods

Suicide Among Native Americans
Suicide is prevalent amongst Native American youth because of all the problems they may face.
They face problems in many different ways and they think their only way out is to commit suicide.
Based on the text, it states, "But lack of resources to treat mental health problems, substance abuse
and family turmoil have an effect too, Wagner said. "There is this feeling of being trapped, and
having nowhere to go""(Newsela). This shows that the Native Americans have some problems that
they think they can't overcome. The reservations don't have as many organizations to help and
prevent suicide. Some Native Americans who go to school say that the teachers are being hard on
them, but the teachers don't know what is happening at home. They face problems at home with

When their parents are never there for their child, it makes the child feel lonely. Another reason why

from 10 to 24 years old were more than double the rate of any other ethnic group"(Newsela). This
shows that stress is beating the Native Americans. Obviously the problems the Native Americans are
facing are too hard for them to cope with, based on these numbers. They may struggle with their
money, as well. The people who live on the reservations have financial problems. All in all when a

Persuasive Essay On Student Suicide
After a PBS broadcast called 'College Can Be Killing' aired on television, reveling how colleges and
universities ignored student suicide to save their reputation, studies were conducted to show what
causes suicide ideations and attempts (Brandt, 35). These have led to the results of showing what
can be linked to suicide, such as risky behaviors. Since the 1950s, the suicide rate among young
adults have tripled, due to numerous factors. (Cerel, 46) After the influence of parents and other
students, universities have begun to change how they handle suicide on campus. New studies were
then created to see what factors play into the increased suicide rates. These new studies have

They also predicted that students who frequently fought with others tended to think about suicide.
Studies also provided ways to help prevent student suicide. Studies showed that "positive social
support and negative social exchanges" can have a big effect on suicide ideation and attempts
(Hirsch, 394). Positive encouragement served as a barrier to suicide attempts and negative
connections proved to be an increased risk (Hirsch, 394). Even with the vast amount of research that
was being done, the suicide rates continued to increased. Around 2013, more studies were made that
specifically focus on the different factors that may have contributed to the rising rates. The
conversation then shifted to knowing more about the factors and causes of student suicide. Studies
were taking into consideration of students who come into college with mental illness such as
depression and bipolar disorder and students who develop disorders while in college. Students who
develop mental illness while in college and are thinking about suicide usually have "poor sleep
habits, drugs and alcohol, and academic stress" (Taub, 6). They now consider specific students who
are more likely to commit suicide such as, athletes, LGBT, and gender. Research have found that
women are more likely to think about suicide but men are more likely to commit the act.

speaking, psychiatric disorders and substantial psychosocial impairments are known to be associated
with suicide attempts. However, previous research attempting to identify specific risk factors in

follow up period, while 14% of those with a single suicide attempt re–attempted during the follow

significant difference in gender between those with single and multiple suicide attempts. There was
a significant interaction of gender with the SIQ–JR. The results of this study showed that higher
SIQ–JR scores indicated an increase risk for later suicide attempts for girls. However, the SIQ–JR
did not show an association with increased scores and suicide attempts for boys. Therefore, it can be
concluded that the SIQ–JR is a reliable measure in predicting suicide attempts among adolescent
girls but not for adolescent boys. This study clearly highlights the prevalence of suicide among
adolescents and the clinical significance of this problem. Specifically, this study has determined that
the SIQ–JR is an effective self report measure for predicting suicide attempts in female adolescents.
However, this information limits it's external validity considering this is only efficient for a select
group of adolescents. The severity of psychopathology

appetite or body weigh; changes in sleep patterns; feelings of worthlessness; and suicidal thoughts."
(Reifman, A. ,2011) Stress can contribute to a state of mind easily causing depressed moods along
with mood swings. For instance, when bills need to be paid and a worker has been underpaid by his

On the other hand, circumstances and behaviours which lead to positive outcomes in the lives of

A lot of students do not feel comfortable with seeking help from the counselors or their friends or
their parents but maybe having that one person could make them feel that much better. If they feel
like they can have just one adult who understands them, it could save their life; "the hope is that a
public discussion between young people and the teachers and the counselors who work with them
could inspire peers in distress to get help" (Irvine). Teachers could make a kid feel more comfortable
at school and feel like they could actually have someone to talk to. Students do not always feel like
they can seek the help of counselors because counselors get the reputation that they will just "snitch"
students out to people bigger than them or if kids see other students go into the counselor's office
they just get made fun of after for it. It feels good to feel like there is someone else standing beside
one another in times of sadness or hardship. In an interview, Streit said that she thinks people who
know what they are talking about should talk with parents, teachers, friends, mentors, family to
teach them and to help people know how to identify signs so they know how to contact others and
help people and reach out for people who will not do it for themselves. If everyone knew how to

Kelsey Wells Cyberbullying Paper Analyzes Issue of Suicide

  • 1. Kelsey Wells. Ms. Mccoy. English 1302. 26 April 2017.... Kelsey Wells Ms. McCoy English 1302 26 April 2017 Cyberbullying an Issue Left in the Shadows Cyberbullying is a problem that has only come to light in the last few years. It has many different effects on people; it can cause depression, suicidal thoughts and actions, and effects the way students do in school. Cyberbullying is one of the top leading causes of suicide in teens and young adults (Swearer). Cyberbullying is a major problem that this country needs to get under control because it is leading to self–harm and suicide in teens and young adults. It causes an unsafe learning environment, and the victim cannot get away from the bullying because the attackers stalk them through social media accounts and their cell phones. So, how does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That was until recently; the Washington Post "5 Myths about Bullying" by Susan Swearer states that cyberbullying has attracted more attention since the suicide of Megan Meier, Megan was an eighth– grader who had been bullied over the site MySpace; she committed suicide in 2006. This article also talks about another suicide of freshman Tyler Clementi who committed suicide after his roommate posted a video of sexual relations between him and another student (Swearer). Both of these cyberbullying cases ended tragically and not all cases end this way, but it is the cases like these that catch people's attention. Another article that brings light to the consequences of cyberbullying is an article by Mudhamita Murgia, "Compassion is the Best Weapon Against Cyber Trolls". This article shows that Prince William had never realized how bad the cyberbullying issue was until he had children (Murgia). This article explains how cyberbullying is linked to self–harm; it says that people who are involved in cyberbullying are more likely to watch videos about self–harm (Murgia). Another consequence with cyberbullying is that it causes an unsafe learning environment. Even though cyberbullying happens online or through some type of technology, other people have access and can see what is being said and what is happening online. With everyone having access and being able to see what is happening cyberbullying can easily be turned into face to face bullying causing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Suicide Mission Statement Introduction My purpose is to educate people through the ages of 15 to 24, about suicidal awareness and the help that is readily available. according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, suicide has now reached the second leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year–olds, (Suicide). As an applied example of developmental psychology, suicide has researched studies that have linked teenage suicide to issues with development or other problems that occur over a person's lifetime. Some developmental issues have been recognized as anything from abuse, bullying, family problems, to mental health disorders. Studies tend to focus on lifestyles of the specific group being studied, home environment, social environment, medical history, mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This person is not an expert and does not know the correct way of educating one that is dealing with suicidal thoughts. • 3. Left Behind Left Behind Misty Dennis GEN499: General Education Capstone Leslie Ruff October 11, 2015 The heartache of losing someone dear to us is a pain that most of us will unfortunately experience at some point in our lives. Comforting someone who has lost a loved one is not an easy endeavor, as finding the right words to ease someone's pain is no easy feat. Now, imagine comforting a mom or dad, sister or brother, spouse or child of someone who intentionally took their own life. Not only does the family and friends of the suicide victim feel the shock of loss, but also they may feel that they failed the victim in some way, did not see the signs, and feel guilt that they should have seen this coming. Coupled with their own guilt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was rendered mute by the enormity of this act of self–murder (Chassay, 2006). This article shows us that not only family and friends are affected by suicide, but trained professionals in the area of depression and mental illness have a hard time coping also. STIGMA Researchers have come across evidence that suicide survivors do indeed suffer from stigma in the community. According to the Surgeon General's Report stigma is "manifested by bias, distrust, stereotyping, fear, embarrassment, and/or avoidance of the stigmatized individual or group "(US Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). Many religions specifically condemn suicide as a sin, therefore suicide survivors may not be inclined to share the way their loved one passed away, due to being ostracized. Instead of sharing their feelings, suicide survivors may be inclined to keep their thoughts to themselves, isolating themselves from the outside world. The fear of being judged by someone else's actions has taken away some of the survivors ability to grieve properly According to one research "The suicidally bereaved group reported higher levels of General Grief, Loss of Social Support, Stigmatization, Responsibility, Rejection, Self–Destructive Behavior and Unique Reactions when compared to the other four bereavement groups (Silverman,Range & Overholser, 1994). This study indicates that suicide survivors do indeed feel stigmatized, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Risk Essay (1) The following study discusses the risk & resilient factors in the life of Pauline, a 16 year old NZ European/Maori teenager. These factors involve her family life and its importance to her: the value of education and the consequences of leaving school without qualifications; how activities such as church participation can be helpful and the problems involved with having nothing to do; the effects of substance abuse; early sexual involvement and its risks; the risk of suicide, suicide attempts & ideation. The likely impacts of all of these factors on her current & future health status will be considered. Key words or concepts: resilience or protective factors: is factors that buffer young people from risks & promote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pauline expresses that there is a lot of arguing with her Dad & Stepmother. This provides risk for her as serious conflict between caregivers and children can put them at the risk of the problem behaviours (Channing Bete Company 2004). The separation of a child's parents can put him/her at risk especially if there are a lot of changes or that the child does not have a good relationship with at least one parent (Burt 2002). It has been indicated in a study that girls in two parent families are less likely to act out risky behaviours than those in single parent families. (M.D. Resnick et al 1993). Children or adolescents who are well reasonably well adjusted after divorce nearly always come from an environment where there is a firm, responsive, nurturing, supportive adult (Henderson 2002). Pauline's recent history is shows this sort of environment has not been there for her. A factor that protects an adolescent is having an adult in her life she can trust and with whom she can confide. The presence of an adult Mentor in an adolescents life helps reduce the participation in risk taking behaviours. (Beier et al 2000). Pauline reports having a close relationship with her Aunty Sarah who lives down the road with her Nan. She is able to confide with Aunty Sarah and feels close to her. This is a significant protective factor for Pauline. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Celebrity Suicide The Werther Effect of Two Celebrity Suicides: an Entertainer and a Politician, a study conducted by psychologists in South Korea set out to observe the possible influence of the Werther Effect on the general public. Researchers considered the cases of two celebrities of different public standing who committed suicide within the span of one year and separately studied how their deaths, along with the way that they were covered in the media, effected the suicide rates of the general population. After taking into account factors that may impact the likelihood of imitative suicides, factors like age and sex of the victim, the circumstances surrounding the individual at the time of their suicide, and the method by which they ended their lives, researchers ... • 6. Creativity vs. Psychological Health of Anne Sexton A number of creative individuals have taken their own lives, including John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, and many other writers. The large number of such cases suggests that there may be a functional relationship between creativity and psychological health. This relationship seems to vary across domains, with the rate of suicide especially high in certain groups of artists. This may suggest that there may be something unique to those domains that either draws suicide– prone persons into the domain or has an impact on the individual such that suicide is considered and often attempted. When the poem writing by Anne Sexton entitled Her Kind you can closely compare how Anne's mental health affected her poetry and how her poetry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is some evidence that Sexton's mother was jealous about her very early writing (Long). Sexton did not have obvious creative aspirations, but instead seemed to think more about a family of her own. At one point her mother accused her of plagiarism and had that particular writing examined. It was deemed to be original, but many scholars suggest this incident affected Sexton's relationship with her mother. Sexton's aunt on her father's side attempted suicide in early childhood, lived several decades in an apparently stable marriage, and eventually committed suicide just before she turned seventy. The family believes that if her aunt's suicide had any sort of influence on Sexton, it was probably informational (e.g., the aunt modeling suicide) rather than genetic. Biographers place great emphasis on Sexton's psychiatric treatment, which was significant as evidenced by the content of her poetry. And, it is possible, given her nonconformism that Sexton suffered from a borderline personality disorder. There are reports of her schizophrenic language, for instance, as well as her tendency to enter some sort of trance at the end of her psychiatric treatment sessions. She apparently did not want to end the sessions, perhaps because of emotional and social needs. "Sexton's writing seems so personal she is often labeled a 'confessional' poet" Anne did not agree with this title and preferred ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Preventing Adolescent Suicide More often than not adolescents are struggling to navigate their ever increasing stressful lives. Mental illness, demands of school, social pressures along with domestic issues at home are causing adolescents to commit suicide at an alarming rate. Often these individual acts of recklessness are not acknowledged nationally unless they result in undeniable hostility. School shootings are a direct result of these desperate unheard cries for help, culminating in mass killings causing permanent injuries both physical and psychological in nature to those surrounding the event. Preventing and predicting potential adolescent carnage is exceedingly important in the United States. The rate of adolescent suicide is steadily increasing. According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are 600 successful sites in 38 states that are implementing the Teen Screen Schools and Community program(Pelt, 2011). The Safety Program is an innovative 12 week trail rooted in social economic cognitive behavioral models that blend parent and adolescent treatment sessions. This is a family intervention program which was designed to increase safety and reduce suicide attempts. Research has indicated adolescents with a family history of depression are 11 times more likely to also suffer from depression. The duality of healing both parent and adolescent is a beneficial step toward prevention and postvention. Combating Adolescent Suicide requires focused Cognitive Behavioral Testing to predict the risk factors and traits that lead to suicide through diagnostic measurements, reducing the likely hood of suicide among adolescents. In the past suicide in general was perceived as a tact used by the weak to escape their situation. There were no methods of prediction identified to prevent the event. As time progressed and suicide became an issue among adolescents, medical staff and parents began to recognize patterns of behaviors that revealed if an individual was at risk. In present day, research has grown to include community supported, education based intervention and mental health services to combat the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Data Suicide Case Study 1.Based on the data in Figure 11.1, what would have happened if we had used a common regression line to predict suicide risk in all three age groups? If a common regression line was used to predict suicide risk in all three age groups, then it is likely that the test would overpredict the risk of suicide in young clients, while underpredicting the risk of suicide in older patients, for the middle age clients it would be a slope bias. This is just one reason why sub groups should not be presented before test administration. If the test overpredicts then it is unreliability because the inaccuracy serves as a threat to the reliability and validity of the research. 2. Assuming we did use the same regression line for all three groups, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 7.Can a test that is determined to be biased still be a fair test? Alternatively, can a test that is determined to be unfair still be an unbiased test? Yes, a test that is determined to be biased can still be a fair test and a test that is determined to be unfair can still be an unbiased test. Test bias and test fairness are two different things but they have the availability to be potentially related concepts. 8.Describe the process of back translation. Why is back translation insufficient to guarantee equivalence? In the process of a back–translation test are translated by bilingual individuals from English to the target language, the test is then retranslated back to English by other bilingual individuals. In the article 'Bullying Statistics' it states, "About 42 percent of kids have been bullied while online with one in four being verbally attacked more than once." This shows that too many kids have been bullied, just online. The suicide data reports of 2012 estimated 22 veterans commit suicide everyday (Kemp & Bossate, 2012). Evidence–based studies show one of the major reasons behind the large number of veteran suicides may be related to undiagnosed mental disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Department of Veteran Affairs reports, "8 percent of the five million veterans using VA care have been diagnosed with PTSD" (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2014). It was once believed that people who self injure were just doing it for attention but recent studies have proven otherwise. A quote from the research from the CASE study in Europe stated that "The findings of this study show that adolescents who deliberately self–harm often report both cry of pain and cry for help motives. The majority of youngsters wanted to get relief from a terrible state of mind and/ or wanted to die with their act of self–harm. While many people have become accepting of the LGB population, there are still many cases where stigma seems to surround homosexuality, and that stigma can have a very negative effect on the individual. My suggestion for society is that middle and high schools begin to provide an educational course on the lesbian, gay and bisexual experience, so that students may find a sense of empathy towards their LGB peers, and therefore allow these individuals to form stronger and more fulfilling relationships. By forming stronger relationships, LGB individuals will have a more positive support system and environment, which we learned has a tendency to reduce suicidal attempts. A large portion of LGB individuals wait long periods of time to "come out" to their loved ones for fear of upsetting them or having their relationship change because of this disclosure. There are different factors of suicides but should not be taken lightly. Suicide has three different approaches which include; threatening, attempting, and committing. Individuals that fall in the threatening suicide approach make their actions straight forward and vibrant. Thio, Taylor, and Schwartz state "these individuals want to live rather than die, since their suicide threats are intended as a means of achieving some objective in life" (Thio et al, 2013, p. 145). • 30. Persuasive Essay On Student Suicide After a PBS broadcast called 'College Can Be Killing' aired on television, reveling how colleges and universities ignored student suicide to save their reputation, studies were conducted to show what causes suicide ideations and attempts (Brandt, 35). These have led to the results of showing what can be linked to suicide, such as risky behaviors. Since the 1950s, the suicide rate among young adults have tripled, due to numerous factors. (Cerel, 46) After the influence of parents and other students, universities have begun to change how they handle suicide on campus. New studies were then created to see what factors play into the increased suicide rates. These new studies have changed the conversation of student suicide overtime by ... Studies showed that "positive social support and negative social exchanges" can have a big effect on suicide ideation and attempts (Hirsch, 394). Positive encouragement served as a barrier to suicide attempts and negative connections proved to be an increased risk (Hirsch, 394). Even with the vast amount of research that was being done, the suicide rates continued to increased. Around 2013, more studies were made that specifically focus on the different factors that may have contributed to the rising rates. The conversation then shifted to knowing more about the factors and causes of student suicide. Studies were taking into consideration of students who come into college with mental illness such as depression and bipolar disorder and students who develop disorders while in college. Students who develop mental illness while in college and are thinking about suicide usually have "poor sleep habits, drugs and alcohol, and academic stress" (Taub, 6). • 31. Suicide in Adolescents In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established that 6.3% of high school students have attempted suicide in the preceding year. Given the lethal consequences of suicide attempts, determining risk factors among adolescents becomes especially important. Generally speaking, psychiatric disorders and substantial psychosocial impairments are known to be associated with suicide attempts. However, previous research attempting to identify specific risk factors in adolescents is somewhat ambiguous. Nonetheless, one thing is consistent. When measuring the risk of an adolescent committing suicide, information must come from a variety of sources and perspectives. These sources may include but are not limited to a clinical ... At the baseline, 37% of adolescents had a history of one suicide attempt, while 39% had a history of two or more suicide attempts. Adolescents with multiple suicide attempts re–attempted 21% of the time during the follow up period, while 14% of those with a single suicide attempt re–attempted during the follow up period. In regards to re–attempting suicide during the follow up period, there was not a significant difference in gender between those with single and multiple suicide attempts. There was a significant interaction of gender with the SIQ–JR. The results of this study showed that higher SIQ–JR scores indicated an increase risk for later suicide attempts for girls. However, the SIQ–JR did not show an association with increased scores and suicide attempts for boys. Therefore, it can be concluded that the SIQ–JR is a reliable measure in predicting suicide attempts among adolescent girls but not for adolescent boys. This study clearly highlights the prevalence of suicide among adolescents and the clinical significance of this problem. Specifically, this study has determined that the SIQ–JR is an effective self report measure for predicting suicide attempts in female adolescents. However, this information limits it's external validity considering this is only efficient for a select group of adolescents. The severity of psychopathology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Raphael (1996) pointed towards an increasing and disproportionate rise in psychosocial problems affecting youth and Brown (2002) posits that health problems and health compromising behaviours are interrelated in this cohort. It is important to look beyond the presenting issue and assess the adolescent taking into account their developmental stage, risk and protective factors and resiliency (McNeely, Nonnemaker, & Blum, 2002). An assessment for these factors must be part of the screening process to facilitate early detection and health promotion in young people (Sanci et al., 2003). An immediate at–risk factor for Amy is suicide ideation. This requires careful assessment and a direct unambiguous line of questioning. A lot of students do not feel comfortable with seeking help from the counselors or their friends or their parents but maybe having that one person could make them feel that much better. If they feel like they can have just one adult who understands them, it could save their life; "the hope is that a public discussion between young people and the teachers and the counselors who work with them could inspire peers in distress to get help" (Irvine). Teachers could make a kid feel more comfortable at school and feel like they could actually have someone to talk to. Students do not always feel like they can seek the help of counselors because counselors get the reputation that they will just "snitch" students out to people bigger than them or if kids see other students go into the counselor's office they just get made fun of after for it. It feels good to feel like there is someone else standing beside one another in times of sadness or hardship. In an interview, Streit said that she thinks people who know what they are talking about should talk with parents, teachers, friends, mentors, family to teach them and to help people know how to identify signs so they know how to contact others and help people and reach out for people who will not do it for themselves. If everyone knew how to deal with these actions and how to help then the community would not be experiencing this as much. People need to understand and teachers need to know how to reach out so they can make just that much more of an impact.
