Maintaining The Gender Wage Gap
From the beginning of time there has been a distinction between the accepted roles of males and
females. For ages men have been viewed as the family provider and women as the family caretaker.
Although new roles developed with different eras, the same ideals have held for centuries now.
Since the late 1800's, the idea of "feminism," or the social, political, and economic equality for
females, has begun to shake the foundations of gender roles. It is 2015, and women have made
tremendous strides to establish equality for themselves in a world dominated by male leaders.
However, women have not been able to conquer the wage gap. The gender wage gap refers to
women being paid on average 78% of what men do. Although the gap is closing, it is still ... Show

This remarkable achievement for women has enabled them to accomplish more in every aspect of
their life. Frequently throughout American history, the woman has been viewed as the domestic
housewife. Becoming a domesticated woman was essentially their way of life. From a young age
they were expected to learn how to clean, cook, sew, and take care of the children (Kendall–Tackett,
Web). When they were older, they led their household with the same mannerisms. Stigmas were
placed on women that differed from the traditions of society. Such stigmas basically marked them as
"impure." The housewives sole job throughout the majority of American history was to cater to the
needs of the family within the house. This social norm started to deteriorate post World War II.
Colossal amounts of women had inundated into the work force and had no intentions of leaving. The
pressing debate of the woman in the kitchen versus the woman in the office waged in the 1950's
through the 1960's ("The Fight for Reproductive Rights" Web). The social significance of the
American female gender role passively shifted out of focus. Now, it is more accepted for women to
take on different roles, even male oriented roles, outside of the house and in

What Is The Doogle
On this occasion of International Women's Day, Google is celebrating womanhood with its amazing
Doodle honoring 13 inspiring women who've helped us get where we are today as women. The
Google Doodle narrates a bedtime story, told by an elderly woman to her granddaughter about 13
remarkable women. In her imagination, the little girl then visits these pioneers, and takes us along
with her on a journey, spanning centuries and circling the globe.
So, who are these women? They are the women who became successful by fighting their way
through, even on the time when women were hardly respected as human being. Among them are
American Journalist and Civil rights activist Ida Wells, Halet Çambel– the first Turkish woman to

Maya Angelou Contributions
Maya Angelou was a remarkable woman who contributed a lot through her craft as a poet, author,
activist, and philanthropist. A large amount of her work was influenced by her past life experiences
that added social, cultural, and political topics to her writing. Angelou growing up endured a broken
home, segregation, and rape; however, regardless of her woeful beginnings, she became one of the
most notable black female writers of our century.
Angelou was raised in a rural area in Arkansas, where she grew up during the Great Depression.
Therefore, Angelou saw the hapless effects of increased poverty in her community. She lived with
her brother and mother after her parents had divorced, which was looked down upon during this
time. Her mother had a boyfriend who sadly raped Angelou at the age of seven. This lead to him
being convicted by the court and when he was released from jail he was killed for his crime. This
incident affected Angelou deeply and shortly after she became mute. Since she was not speaking,
she would pass her time reading literature. Authors like Langston Hughes, W.E.B Du Bois, William
Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens are just some of the writers that inspired her to create her own
pieces. When she began school, she was excelling in all her studies which brought the attention of
her mentor, Ms. Flowers. She gave Angelou one life lesson that stuck with her forever, "It takes the
human voice to infuse words with the shades of deeper meaning"( Angelou Caged Bird

Sandra Day O Connor Research Paper
Sandra Day–O'Connor: First Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day–O'Connor was nominated for the
Supreme Court in 1981 by President Ronald Regan. An amazing woman, O'Connor's
accomplishments are many. After, surprisingly, being accepted into Stanford law school, O'Connor
graduated third in her class of 102 in 1952 (Institute 2000). O'Connor, like many women of her time,
could not get a job as a lawyer because of prejudice and discrimination. This did not stop this
determined woman, or even slow her down! The road from a remote southwestern Arizona ranch to
the first female Republican Senate majority leader and then first female Supreme Court Justice was
fraught with stereotypical female prejudice. Being a Republican, O'Connor was expected

Solar Mamas
"Solar Mamas" directed by Jahane Noujaim discusses many important aspects of society and it
highlights the journey of Rafea, a mother of four children struggling to achieve her dreams and
benefit her village. The truth conveyed from this inspiring documentary is that women are powerful
and if given the right opportunities in the right time, they can succeed and end up being fruitful in
many possible ways. Feminism is an applicable theory to be related to the truth, because the broad
idea of feminism is greatly discussed throughout the media. In fact, the documentary shows how
Rafea is fighting to reach her dreams no matter what the costs, fights, and sacrifices are. Eventually
she was able to reach her goal and fight the mainstream in her society. The Bedouin culture Rafea
lives in, is based on patriarchy where men are in control and have a huge domination over women
and their role in the society; moreover the idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rafea acts as the "Voice", as feminist theory states, that fights against the inequality in such
superstructure where she refuses that being ignorant and ruled by men is acceptable because it is
"part of our [Rafea's] culture". The most note–worthy quote in this documentary took place when
Rafea was battling and talking about her dreams of success: "I want to explore the world. I want to
learn ... I want to succeed and change the situation in the village." Rafea's will and urge to reach
success is pretty powerful at this stage; in fact, she is trying to deliver a message that she is a
powerful woman with big dreams that does not need any man to complete or aid her in any way. She
just wants to be the voice that can change the idea of women in such culture; moreover, the fact that
she is living in a society where women act only as nurturers and nothing else makes her sound more

Amelia Earhart As An Inspirational Person
An inspirational person that I truly adore would persist as Amelia Earhart. I admire her completely,
considering how she portrayed herself as the first woman that proved to the world that women can
engage in the same activities as men. Although Amelia was a female, she kept receiving attention by
having similar interests as men. Amelia felt that she could prove them wrong. She got on a plane and
almost achieved her goal; ascending across the ocean in an airplane, however, the only downside
that occurred was the disappearance of the plane.
If I had the chance to meet her I would ask her why she stood up? In fact, I would also ask why she
found it necessary to prove that she could fly a plane just as exceptional as a man? The way she
stood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In all honesty, she demonstrated off her strengths and proved that woman are just as exceptional as
men, or unbelievably superior. If I could, I would ask to accompany her on her travels. The greatest
answer of all time would be her saying yes to me. A dream of mine would be to accompany her and
ascend up in the sky right by her side. I do not know what I would find, but if I could go back into
the past, I would definitely ask her why she wanted to be the first female flier. Amelia Earhart would
be the person I would interview considering she took a chance to stand up for women and I admire
her for that. In fact, without her brave triumph, I have no idea where women would be at right now.
This act of hers is why I adore herself is truly remarkable to me. She stood up by believing that she
could achieve any goal as if she was a man. Everyone thought that she was crazy, but that did not
stop her. She went far as the first female flier in history! Whereas men attain the simple road
considering how men were portrayed. Men were always put first considering their sex. Men were
considered strong where woman were considered weak. Amelia helped prove this wrong by proving
to the world that women can fly planes too. I want to ask Amelia these questions because I would
feel a sense of closure, knowing why she did what she did. That will help me grow as a person, by
making me believe that I can achieve my goals and dreams too. Besides, I

Elizabeth Blackwell: The Historical Figure I Admire The Most
Competitive Edge Level One: Essay Response
The historical figure I admire the most would be Elizabeth Blackwell; the first American woman to
graduate in Medical School. The reasons for this particular and very singular woman to take the
position almost to a roll model is to the remarkable era she started, my growing want to become a
doctor someday, and to the feminist side of myself.
Today women can do almost anything the put their minds to; excluding the inequalities in pay and
many other things in this century as opposed to men and women. If a woman has a passion for
learning and transmitting their wisdom, they become teachers. If a woman has a passion for saving
lives and the difference one can make in the medical field and research, they

Shakespeare Hermione Analysis
Shakespeare presents Hermione as a remarkable woman starting from her first utterance, the
personal pronoun "I". This drives the audience to believe she is independent, which connotes to
freedom, allowing her to say to Leontes "you, sir, charge him too coldly". Also, this would have
shocked traditional audiences as woman were inferior and were reliant on men as they were
essentially possessions. Also, she only talks when Leontes says "speak you", as a defence in court
she said she loved Polixenes even so and no other than" Leontes "commanded". Furthermore, she
addresses Leontes as "sir" not by his personal name meaning he's superior showing Hermione's
inferiority. Hermione could be argued as normal as woman had no rights. As Hermione was
impertinent to Leontes saying "you, sir, judge him too coldly". This would have shocked the
traditional audience but instead of telling Hermione off Leontes congratulates her saying "well said
Hermione". This shows Leontes and Hermione's love. Shakespeare shows Hermione to be the better
person and Leontes as the tragic hero. Shakespeare could be being counter–cultural conveying kings
are corruptible not (as believed in culture starting with James the 1) infallible. Shakespeare is
objecting to the divine rights of kings using Leontes as he is not adhering to this concept.
Shakespeare does this in most of his plays under king James for example in Macbeth king Duncan
makes a mistake (culturally unthinkable). Shakespeare uses a semantic

Diction In Doris Lessing's A Woman On A Roof
Through her remarkable short story titled "A Woman on a Roof," Doris Lessing is able to present the
idea that a man's general disdain for women he doesn't have immediate access to may stem from an
initial rejection. Lessing uses devices such as crisp diction and subtle irony placed carefully
throughout her story to accurately convey this problematic and very relevant topic not only during
the 1960s, but also today. To begin, Lessing describes a scene that is quite easy to picture due to her
heavily descriptive diction. She uses words such as steamed, sizzled, smoking, and scorching, which
makes it so that the audience can practically feel the heat of the summer day. This description of the
temperature also seems to set up the tense or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the end, Tom finally gathers up enough courage to speak with his love, but he is rejected...Not
just rejected, but almost completely ignored. The tension and discomfort within this encounter can
be seen when Lessing writes, "She lay there. He stood there. She said nothing. She had simply shut
him out. He stood, saying nothing at all, for some minutes." The high contrast between Tom's
embellished and unrealistic version of the woman and her actual self causes him to become
heartbroken. As mentioned before, Lessing is attempting to show that in some situations, when a
man does not have instant access to a woman, he develops feelings of hatred toward her. In Tom's
fantasies, he always had this access, and she could be anyone he wanted her to be. When she doesn't
exhibit elation at the sound of his proposal, he feels betrayed. This is an example of irony, as Tom
had expected the woman to act as she did in his dreams, but she ended up doing the complete
opposite and letting him down. "A Woman on a Roof" ends by describing Tom's downfall and his
drunkenness (and, based on Lessing's wordplay, it is intentionally unclear whether he is literally
drunk or if he is metaphorically drunk off of the hatred he feels for the woman). It seems as if, at this
point, Tom has essentially turned into Stanley. Tom started off harboring only feelings of admiration
and love for the woman, but he eventually holds the same opinions of Stanley's that he once couldn't

Women In The Bible Analysis
In Paul Hége's book, Women in the Bible, Qumran, and Early Rabbinic Literature: Their Status and
Roles Scholarship writes about, "The status of women in Scripture and in Qumranic and rabbinic
literatures has often been guided by biased preconceptions in both directions" (Héger page 5)
meaning by male citizens and another scholars alike. One of the biggest argument from the Bible,
was the creation woman. As stated by Heger, "The traditional commentators connect these
midrashim to the preceding as other solutions to the apparent contradiction between humankind's
creation as androgynous, subsequently separated, and the biblical assertion that woman was created
from man's rib." Referring that, women are leftover fragments from man. Heger stated this as
wrong, and God had more meaning for women, such as being Adam's helper, not slave. But others
interpretations of the passages such as, "For Adam was formed first, then Eve" give women a lower
ranking among her peers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Media, you can see countless women holding the Bible and have signs up stated God Hates

Corinthians talks about "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto
them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law." So in contrast
there should not be homosexuality nor should women be permitted to communicate. How could
women pick certain selections, yet, by–pass the passages about ridiculing them. When one is reading
the Bible, one can bring up this point. No one fully reads the Bible, they just pick out passages they

How Does Truman Capote Use Imagery In A Christmas Memory
In Truman Capote's short story "A Christmas Memory" imagery and symbolism are used by the
author to show that friendship has no age limit. Truman uses very vivid details and many different
types of figurative language to show his theme ,which is that friendship has no age. An example of
symbolism is, "As if I expected to see, rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying toward heaven"
(6). After getting the news of his friend's death, he goes outside and almost expects to see kites. In
this example of symbolism, the author shows us how deep a bond Buddy and his friend have by
showing us a glimpse of Buddy's mind and how his heart is going to heaven with his friend.
Furthermore, the author uses some imagery when he gives us a vivid description

Lady With The Dog Chekhov
The majority of women say, "All men are dogs" weather because of a past experience or a bad break
up. However, I don't think they have taken into consideration of how a man's life struggle could
have affected that. For example, Dimitri Antirich Guav, the main character in the short story, "The
lady with the dog" by Anton Chekhov had married young and was in an unhappy relationship. As a
result, he has a growing love for Anna. In what ways does Dmitri prove his love for Anna is just to
fulfill his narcissistic persona, could this love be sincere or enough to fill up his ego?
The way apes on talks about others can really say a lot about themselves. Dmitri, a remarkable
character in the story is a forty year old man that is unhappy with his marriage which started in
college. Acknowledge, it can be that he, an 18th century man, consider woman to be a lower class
than him. For instance, "he secretly considered her none to bright, narrow minded, grass less, was
afraid of her, and disliked being at home". He way he talks about his own wife which is said she was
"erect, imposing, dignified, and a thinking person" could only suggest that his wife knowledge a
stern attitude could of intimidated him. To be in a relationship where you feel less masculine could
intimidate a lot of men. Perhaps being with their counterparts could make him feel more of a man. ...

When Rabbit Howls Book Report
"When Rabbit Howls" is the story of a woman named Truddi Chase who suffered through sexual,
physical, and mental abuse during her whole childhood. Although it is an autobiography, the book is
written from a third person point of view. It is constructed of an array of individual thoughts from
"the troop", the name of the collective group of personalities this woman portrays. As explained in
the preface by Chase's psychotherapist, "The troop members 'see' and 'hear' each other and carry on
with one another that are real to them" (XXII). Because of the things that Truddi went through, she
developed Dissociative Personality Disorder, which was previously known as Multiple Personality

The memories come back in what they call "flicks". A troop member would come out when
prompted by Dr. Phillips to tell a new story of something that had happened to her. It is through the
flicks that the Troop was able to develop their memories of the beginnings of abuse when she was
less than two years old, and gain an understanding of all of the times that she had been violated by
her own stepfather. Over the course of the book they develop a understanding of the things that
happened to her while she was the victim of constant molestation, when she had been treated like a
sexual object, and when her stepfather committed other unspeakable acts. This is where the title
"Troop Member" comes from, as she is a small child who wails like a rabbit whenever flicks of a
traumatic event surfaced she would take hold and cry like the rabbits who her stepfather had abused
in front of her. Once these things had come out, the Troop started making plots for revenge. Dr.
Phillips said that as the sessions went on, recall of the "flickers" became easier to achieve, but "he
wasn't sure what capabilities belonged to her and what belonged to the troop members"

A Synopsis Of The Film 'Iron Jawed Angels'
Iron Jawed Angels Iron Jawed Angels is a fascinating movie. I never thought women like Lucy

National American Woman Suffrage Association stopped supporting them they continued to fight

superior by men and being abbused by men they would say that liberty would have to

A Woman Like That: An Outline Of Artemisia Gentileschi
In "A Woman Like That" the outline of Artemisia Gentileschi story is very compelling. It seems to
be similar to Kahlo in that Artemisia's father was also an artist and taught his only daughter to paint.
Artemisia was introduced to painting in her father's workshop, where she showed much more talent
than her brothers, who worked alongside her. She learned drawing, how to mix color, and how to
paint. Her approach to subject matter was different from her father's, because her paintings are
highly naturalistic, while his are idealized. Her own dreams seemed well recorded in letters she
wrote conveying the fact that she understood that her status as a female painter was unusual. Also
she knew that she posed a threat to the male establishment and ... Show more content on

One observer said, "She's playing the 'I'm a sexy woman' card." The film divulges that Artemisia is
known at least as much for her personal story as for her work. It notes that she was raped at age 17
by a friend of her father's, yet another painter, named Agostino Tassi. This part of her experience is
clearly documented in court transcripts, which the filmmaker finds in Rome, and is highlighted in
close–ups of the pages. Writer Alexandra Lapierre, who describes herself as "obsessed" with
Artemisia, says "There is a pulse of life in her which you hear extremely well in the trial." Which is
proven by Artemisia's description of the assault being very vivid, as well as her description of her
efforts to resist. Tassi protested that he was only trying to teach her "perspective" in painting and
that no such attack took place. Her father brought suit against Tassi at least in part because he had
dishonored the family, and decreased the value of Artemisia as a woman and wife, as she was no
longer a virgin. Tassi was convicted and sentenced to one year in prison; Artemisia was shipped off
to Florence, where she married a model artist named Pierantonio

Women's Role in Shakespearean Tragedy
In Shakespeare's tragedies and his plays in general, we can come across several types of female
characters. Their influence with other characters and their purpose or role, often underestimated like
women themselves, will be this essay's main subject. Women in Shakespearean plays have always
had important roles, sometimes even the leading role. Whether they create the main conflicts and
base of the plays, or bring up interesting moral and cultural questions, they have always been put in
challenging situations. Some women are stronger than others, and their effect on the play is different
for each one. They often even surpass the male heroes. It's almost unbelieveable, if we take into
consideration the status of women, of course with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only transgressing the patriarchal bounds of femininity by marrying so soon after her husband's
death and not remaining in passive grief makes her "strong" but grim indeed. This provides Hamlet
with a model of women's inconstancy ("Frailty, thy name is woman."). On the other hand in the
portrayal of unstable Ophelia Shakespeare shows how men in a strong patriarchal society controlled
women in the 1600s. The influence of men in Ophelia's life is evident throughout by the
relationships with men in her life. It is interesting to note that Ophelia's first scene is in a very
domestic setting. She is influenced and controlled by those around her, and unable to express her
deep feelings because of their control. Actually she suffers as a result of Hamlet's patriarchal values
of womanhood. Ophelia's subsequent madness and eventual suicide (so typical sign of the classical
tragedy) came as a result of the pressure and control her father and the king had over her. At her
father's death she lost her identity completely, and along with that her sanity. But she has a major
influence on Hamlet, and his return to sanity, despite the fact, she is a victim.
Juliet is given similar personality in another Shakespeare's tragic play, "Romeo and Juliet". Again it
explores the effects of patriarchal authority exerted over women and the responses to it. Through
heroine Juliet, Lady Capulet, and the Nurse, Shakespeare establishes a common understanding of
this type of society, and

Forbidden Love
The novel Girl with a Pearl Earring should definitely be included on the Novel Ideas book club

an adolescent audience, as it explores the theme of sensual awakening. Set in 17th century Delft,
Chevalier's novel explores the deep but forbidden love between a young maid and her master. The
author's clever combination of an intriguing story, remarkable characters and descriptive language
allowed her to explore the themes of forbidden love, predators and sexual desires.

Vermeer asked Griet to wear his wife's pearl earrings for the sitting. She knew it would cause more
trouble but was obedient to the man she had fallen in love with. This complication built suspense for
the readers as they anticipated the wife's reaction. After Vermeer's wife saw the earrings in the
painting, she tried to destroy it. Griet knew she had to leave. She chose to go to Pieter who she later
married. When Vermeer died 10 years later, he left the pearl earrings to Griet in his will. The
author's mix of realistic events, romantic love, and unwanted sexual encounters reflect a timeless
storyline that would appeal to young adults in today's society, facing the same problems.
The author has skillfully constructed the characters to assist young readers to connect with them.
The main character, Griet, is a quiet, lonely, innocent and vulnerable young lady. When Van Ruijven

recognized by her master, but was too shy to say anything. She was looking for love and security,
which she found in Vermeer. Vermeer's remarkable character draws young readers in as he was
portrayed as a very gentle, caring and loyal man – the type of man you would want to marry.

The Story Of The Syrophoenician Woman In The Gospels
The story of the Syrophoenician woman found in the Book of Matthew and Mark is one of the most
intriguing accounts of healing in the Gospels.
The Book of Matthew says Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A
certain woman came to Jesus, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is
demon–possessed and suffering terribly" (Matthew 15:21–22). The woman was a Gentile, of
Syrophoenician origin. She is described as "a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race" in Mark 7:26
(KJV).3 She wanted Jesus to cast the devil out of her daughter. Jesus replied to her, "It is not right to
take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs" (Matthew 15:24). What??? And with remarkable

Summary Of Hidden Figures
Works Cited Melfi, Theodore, director. Hidden Figures. Fox 2000 Pictures, 2016. Hidden Figures, a
book about 3 African American women who overcame adversity, takes place in the mid 1960s. A
time where racism was at its worst and poverty was in effect. The names were Katherine Goble,
Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, who were all 3 geniuses in their fields of study. Katherine was

women are perfect examples of overcoming anything that stands in your way. Katherine Goble, a
little girl out of White Sulphur Springs, WV, being blessed with many different ways, did not know
she would soon become a very special person at N.A.S.A. Although her family was very poor,
schools funded her to go to the right schools. She had a very caring mother that would do anything
for her little girl. Katherine grew up with one of the smartest brains in her time. She was so smart
that she was above her grade level. This gift from God will play out a big role later on in Katherine's
job with N.A.S.A. In this time, it was hard enough being an African American but how do you think
it would've been if you was also a woman? She has 3 children back home but terribly, her husband
passed away a few years back. For Katherine, being at N.A.S.A was a dream, but not everything
there was a perfect fantasy. There were many complications that she had to face in her time of
working there. At N.A.S.A there were separate bathrooms for whites and blacks, so Katherine had to
walk a half mile just to use the restroom every day no matter the weather condition. A sane person
would absolutely hate doing that just to relieve yourself so one day she put an end to that situation.
Mr. Harrison, Katherine's boss, asked her where she goes for 40 minutes every day so Katherine had
some things to express. In her very expressive talk with Mr. Harrison, Katherine stated, " Excuse me
if I have to use the bathroom a few times a day." (Hidden Figures) The result of that situation was

Maya Angelou Pretty Woman
The song "Pretty Woman" talks of a guy meeting a beautiful looking female. The song is similar but
cannot be compared to the meaning of a poem by Maya Angelou. Her poem Phenomenal Woman,
talks about how she is not a "pretty woman," yet that does not stop the men from looking and
wondering about her. Maya Angelou uses imagery, tone, and the title to describe her view of herself
compared to the "pretty woman" Imagery in the poem Phenomenal Woman is important. Maya
Angelou uses imagery in the poem because the speaker is comparing herself, a regular woman, to
the way media suggest woman should look. She uses this literary technique in each stanza,
especially in the second stanza of the poem, describing how men react to her and not the "pretty
woman." "Then they swarm around me, hive of honey bees" (lines 19–20), creating an example of
imagery saying that wherever the speaker ends up men began to surround her. In all of the stanzas,
almost in the middle of each one, the speaker describes herself, "It's in the arch of my back, the sun
of my smile, the ride of my breast, the grace of my style" (lines 38–41). This quote explains the

A Great Variety Of Gender Construction
Daniel Lindsey
Professor Hogue
HIST 449
9 October 2014
Essay One Throughout our class, we have seen a great variety of gender construction. Through
centuries of gender divides, there have been women who created for themselves and that of their
community new identities that not only grew local and worldwide attention, but have inspired
historians for centuries. In the case of Malinche, she used her womanhood to secure her spot with
Cortes, as he conquered and ruled over the Aztecs. Ursela de Jesus contributed to the
Catholic church of her time, and made a new ideal for servant hood as a woman in the church.
Yet not all of these experiences were positive; trials and tribulations often faced Malinche and
Ursela. Through the occcurences of these women it is evident that no matter the circumstance or
outcome, women face a double standard, yet in certain cases use their knowledge to work past these
standards. Malinche was multilingual. Because of her advanced preoccupation with learning
languages and using the detailed experiences of her family background, she was able to advance
Cortes and his army. Upon analyzing the way in which Malinche furthered Cortes, one can deduce
that throughout her life, she was held to an unfair standard of life expectations, simply because she
was a women. When the Spanish came to take women from indigenous communities, kin leaders
often gave in to the wishes of the Spanish, first to save themselves from oppressive rule and next

Isabella D Este Research Paper
Isabella d'Este was born on May 18th, 1474 in Ferrara, Italy. She is known as a patron of
Renaissance learning, arts and literature. She is the daughter of Ercole d'Este and Eleonora of
Aragon. Her parents believed in educating their daughters equally to their sons, and she received an
education not frequently given to women. At sixteen, she could speak and translate Greek and Latin
and had a variety of musical talents, including singing, dancing, and playing the lute. She could also
engage in intellectual debates with ambassadors. She married Francesco il Gonzaga, Marchese of
Mantua, when she was only sixteen years old. She had seven children with him. She established the
first known study created for a woman. Her personal study included a magnificent library, marble

female ruler. Ladies of the court were to show, learning, chastity, and fidelity to their husband and
family. Ladies had their own income and entourage. This allowed financing and the creation of
chapels, monasteries, and other religious buildings. They could also buy their own manuscripts and
tapestries. She liked paintings that saved a woman's reputation because she felt it could relate more
to her own private life.
Isabella was known as "The First Lady of the Renaissance," she was related to nearly every ruler in
Italy either by birth or marriage. When her husband was captured, she had to take charge. She
gained the loyalty of the people. When she took control of the military she was able to free her

Dorothea Witch Benefits
In1854 after the veto of her bill Dorothea decided that a trip abroad would prove beneficial to her
spirit and health. To Dorothy this was supposed to be a time of rest and reflection on her
accomplishments and failures as well as an opportunity to gain insight into the asylums of Europe.
Despite being both a woman and a foreigner, Dorothea showed her remarkable dedication to her
cause, while in Europe. Soon after arriving in England she was asked to journey to Scotland and
visit the asylums. She was appalled at the conditions the inmates resided in and quickly went into
action. She was able to gain a commission and prompted an inquest into the conditions of the
Scotland asylums. Queen victory even granted her a Royal Commission to help improve ... Show

family who need scapegoats for the wrong–happenings in their lives. Bertha Mason is similarly
condemned for her representation of the rejection of the female ideal–the rejection of the wifely,
mother role–and the discord over her own sexuality. Just like Sula, her fierce nature is exposed
through her identification with the wild, unruliness, and ultimately with sex.
This Gothic theme of the "dark woman" exposes the female discontent and need to rebel against
patriarchal society. While Jane feels in love with Rochester, she also subconsciously fears a
marriage to him and the imprisonment it could become. Jane never manifests this fright and anger ...

Unlike Jane and Bertha however, Sula is able to be a whole person and represent both the good and
"bad" qualities of an independent woman. She too is a representation of an independent and
impassioned female, rebelling against the social constraints posed upon women, and pushes the
threshold of its definitions of womanhood. This is seen throughout the novel as she explores her
own thoughts and emotions, giving them full reign over her actions and behavior. Her defiant refusal
to be bullied, the exploration of her strength through sexuality, her refusal to settle into the domestic
feminine model, and her decision to leave the Bottom and go to college, make Sula a remarkably
strong and intimidating woman for her time. Like Bertha, Sula's displays of the overt rejection of
societal ideals mark her as something supernatural and evil. Compared to a sorceress and witch,
Sula is linked with many gothic supernatural symbols throughout the novel, such as her strange
dream that turns into reality when her mother burns alive, and the "plague of robins" that follow her
return to the Bottom (Morrison, 89). From this, the townspeople find any incident in which to blame
on Sula, accusing her of pushing Teapot down the stairs, and causing Mr. Finely to choke on a
chicken bone–none of which she is involved in. Sula's birthmark goes from the interpretation of a
rose, to the symbol of a snake, and finally to

good, selfish behaviors will always be punished and that disliking unlikable people does not
inherently make you a good person. The protagonists of the first three O'Connor stories all have
good intent behind their actions and words, yet despite their work and viewpoints they all suffer an

Fortune's selfish determination to create his own image in Mary Fortune causes him to lose the one

his own viewpoint and life mindset over the Pitts', who of course are portrayed as an unlikable
family. Like Julian, Mr. Fortune seems to gloat in his own enlightenment and takes pride in
disagreeing with the Pitts. Once again, while Mr. Fortune has good intentions to try and "save" Mary

Pitts versus Fortune mentality ends up leading to the loss of Mary herself. Mr. Fortune doesn't

the story begins to identify more and more with the Pitts name, Mr. Fortune's selfish notion to fight

Plight of Women in Sweat by Zora Neal Hurston Essay
"Sweat" by Zora Neal Hurston is one simple yet powerful story that aims to reveal the plight of
women through Delia. Delia turns out to be an empowered woman who has built her own home,
handles her family's finances, works hard, and takes pleasure in the results of her hard work. The
fascinating fact about Delia whom I believe represents women in general, is that she was able to
establish and maintain a home despite being married to an inconsiderate husband who only brought
a longing for the flesh instead of love into the relationship (699).
In a nutshell, Delia's husband, Sykes has plans to kill her to pave for way for his second marriage to

Delia was a round character, at first she comes out as being docile. She took up numerous insults,

brought love to the union and he had brought a longing for the flesh. Two months after the wedding,
he had given her first of the many to come brutal beatings (699). This trait turns out to be one of her
major flaws that cause her to suffer a great deal of problems in her tormenting marriage.
Later on, Delia was able to change to an assertive woman." She seized the iron skillet from the stove
and struck a defensive pose, which act surprised him greatly, coming from her. It cowed him and did
not strike her as he usually did. (Hurston 699). This act of bravery translates to a stronger woman.
Even when Sykes brought a snake to the house, she stood for what was rightfully hers despite her
great phobia for snakes.
Hurston tells us that when Sykes tried to stir up an argument, Delia replied," Ah aint for no fuss

Comparing O-Lan And The Virtuous Woman
Throughout the complicated web of humanity, we have had many people that are recognized today
as great. From Christopher Columbus to Madonna, fame and recognition have graced many great
members of our society. But many more members of our society, that deserve respect, don't receive
it. This was often the case in the past for women, as they were not treated equally to men. Yet the
women of these times had a lot of value, especially compared to the praise they were given. Two
examples of women of this quality are O–lan from The Good Earth, and the "Virtuous" woman from
Proverbs 31:10–31. Both O–lan and The Virtuous Woman have many similarities and a few
differences. Both of them provide a lot of value in the relationships that they are a part of, both
romantically and platonically. These woman are both models that not only women, but all people
should aspire to be like. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, neither of them need to be spoiled. O–lan spends much of her life in poverty, from her

Virtuous Woman, when she is described in Proverbs 31:11–12 "The heart of her husband doth safely
trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of
her life." This verse shows that The Virtuous Woman is like O–lan in respect to her humility and
acceptance of life. Another way that these characters are similar is there tendency to give to their
families. O–lan and the virtuous woman always make sure that their family are taken care of. These
good qualities are shared between the two characters, highlighting both of their

Relationships And Independence In Barbara Kingsolver's The...
Thee most inspiring issue or aspect of The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, in my view, is the
relationships and independence shown by the female characters. Women like Taylor and Lou Ann
show a close and loving relationship towards each other. Individually, both of them show lots of
strength and very little weakness emotionally from their day to day of their lives. They relate many
ways since both are single moms taking care of a child by themselves. The independence shown by
these two is remarkable even by our modern world. Obviously, Taylor shows a great deal of
independence through the entire book. One example can be shown in chapter one. Taylor left her
hometown by herself with unreliable car and drove into Taylorville. There,

Free Argumentative Essays: Can Women Have It All?
After first hearing "Can Women Have it All?" it can seem like a simple question on the surface, but
there are numerous aspects that relate to its answer. The question is not a simple yes or no, as the
idea of "having it all" is different for each woman. People have a perception that working mothers
should be superwomen all of the time, but that is not realistic––sacrifices have to be made. Thus, the
idea of "having it all" does not seem completely attainable all of the time, but it ultimately comes
down to the individual woman, and her idea of what "having it all" actually entails.
While this may be a more cynical view, it is much more realistic. This view is very similar to that of
Anne–Marie Slaughter's initial views, especially being a top political woman with a family. Women
are forced to make enormous sacrifices, so they are seldom able to fully balance work and home
life. A 2009 study relating to Gender, Work and Organization notes that "balance may be an
unachievable goal because it is built on an individualistic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

to follow their ambitions, while figuring out how to strike a balance with personal life. She is a
remarkable female advocate, but it is important to note that a woman of her stature is essentially a
minority. With her vast wealth, it is likely much easier to balance the home aspect, as money
provides her with these resources. Unfortunately, the reality is that many working women may not

Property Rights Of Women In The 18th Century
one is in the field of property rights from the very beginning of the family system. Till the later half
of the 18th century the women were not considered to be able to have any economic rights. They
were exclusively dependent upon the will of their family male members which included husband,
brothers and sons. Property has always played an important role in the life of an individual,
community and country. The practical significance of the property lies in the fact that it enables us at
least the necessities and amenities of the routine life if not the means of comfort. The property rights

Time to time material and considerable modifications have been done in laws, which brought drastic
changes including recent enactments that spell about woman's dignity and equality as a global norm.
Inspite of all these, the discrimination in respect of property rights along with many others still
continues and till now the women possess only one percent of immovable property in their own
name. Today women are equal to males and proving themselves equal in every range of life.
Gender bias discrimination is a global phenomenon today. The biggest challenge, before the entire
world is that of gender justice. There is no existence of a single gender bias neither in the Western
world nor in traditional Asian and in the African societies. At present we stand at the residue of the
21st century but we are still unable to identify a society where there is complete gender equality.

She-Wolf In Medieval History: Eleanor Of Aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine has been one of the most renowned women or 'she–wolves' in medieval
history, fascinating historians for over 800 years. She was the heiress to the region of Aquitaine in
Southern France, she became the queen of France, by marrying Louis VII and later of England by
marrying Henry II. She was also the mother of two of England's kings, Richard I and John. She has
been associated with the crusades, the development of courtly love and the Plantegenet–Capetian

historians and novelists to speculate and create a character different to the real Eleanor: she 'has

Eleanor was 'remarkable for in a period where females were invariably relegated to a servile role':
she was challenging gender roles and was a strong woman in her own right and her contemporary
Richard of Devizes said she was 'an incomparable woman'. The birth of Eleanor as a heroine came
out of 20th Century feminism, these historians attempted to rid her of her black legend and
misogynistic stereotypes. Eleanor held the region of aquitaine in her own right and governed it even
during her marriage to Henry II, she was queen of both France and England and also governed on
behalf of her husband Henry II during his absences and again on behalf of her son Richard I, when
he was a prisoner in Germany. Furthermore, she skilfully played her role in political life:
particularly in making sure John succeeded Richard I, by pleading his case in Anjou by fighting the
claim made by her nephew. Earlier in France, Louis 'readily allowed her to take a part in political
decision–making' and she issued decrees under her owl seal. In one instance in 1192 while visiting
Cambridgeshire, she was stopped by villagers who were complaining of the effects of a ban: she
took pity on them, dropped everything and went to urge the archbishop of rouen to remedy the
situation. This demonstrates she was independent and working under her own authority.
Additionally, Eleanor was very clever and apparently uniquely educated, as she was brought up in
the court of Aquitaine, the birthplace of the idea of courtly love, and was the granddaughter of

What Is The Role Of Women In The 1920's
In the 19th century, women were considered mothers and wives. Women have struggled since the
early ages trying to advance in knowledge. "For many people today the word Victorian continues to

the onset of "the permissive society"( Arnstein 596). Tracy Chevalier has examples of how women

Maintaining The Gender Wage Gap

  • 1. Maintaining The Gender Wage Gap From the beginning of time there has been a distinction between the accepted roles of males and females. For ages men have been viewed as the family provider and women as the family caretaker. Although new roles developed with different eras, the same ideals have held for centuries now. Since the late 1800's, the idea of "feminism," or the social, political, and economic equality for females, has begun to shake the foundations of gender roles. It is 2015, and women have made tremendous strides to establish equality for themselves in a world dominated by male leaders. However, women have not been able to conquer the wage gap. The gender wage gap refers to women being paid on average 78% of what men do. Although the gap is closing, it is still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This remarkable achievement for women has enabled them to accomplish more in every aspect of their life. Frequently throughout American history, the woman has been viewed as the domestic housewife. Becoming a domesticated woman was essentially their way of life. From a young age they were expected to learn how to clean, cook, sew, and take care of the children (Kendall–Tackett, Web). When they were older, they led their household with the same mannerisms. Stigmas were placed on women that differed from the traditions of society. Such stigmas basically marked them as "impure." The housewives sole job throughout the majority of American history was to cater to the needs of the family within the house. This social norm started to deteriorate post World War II. Colossal amounts of women had inundated into the work force and had no intentions of leaving. The pressing debate of the woman in the kitchen versus the woman in the office waged in the 1950's through the 1960's ("The Fight for Reproductive Rights" Web). The social significance of the American female gender role passively shifted out of focus. Now, it is more accepted for women to take on different roles, even male oriented roles, outside of the house and in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. What Is The Doogle On this occasion of International Women's Day, Google is celebrating womanhood with its amazing Doodle honoring 13 inspiring women who've helped us get where we are today as women. The Google Doodle narrates a bedtime story, told by an elderly woman to her granddaughter about 13 remarkable women. In her imagination, the little girl then visits these pioneers, and takes us along with her on a journey, spanning centuries and circling the globe. So, who are these women? They are the women who became successful by fighting their way through, even on the time when women were hardly respected as human being. Among them are American Journalist and Civil rights activist Ida Wells, Halet Çambel– the first Turkish woman to compete in the Olympics, Ada ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Maya Angelou Contributions Maya Angelou was a remarkable woman who contributed a lot through her craft as a poet, author, activist, and philanthropist. A large amount of her work was influenced by her past life experiences that added social, cultural, and political topics to her writing. Angelou growing up endured a broken home, segregation, and rape; however, regardless of her woeful beginnings, she became one of the most notable black female writers of our century. Angelou was raised in a rural area in Arkansas, where she grew up during the Great Depression. Therefore, Angelou saw the hapless effects of increased poverty in her community. She lived with her brother and mother after her parents had divorced, which was looked down upon during this time. Her mother had a boyfriend who sadly raped Angelou at the age of seven. This lead to him being convicted by the court and when he was released from jail he was killed for his crime. This incident affected Angelou deeply and shortly after she became mute. Since she was not speaking, she would pass her time reading literature. Authors like Langston Hughes, W.E.B Du Bois, William Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens are just some of the writers that inspired her to create her own pieces. When she began school, she was excelling in all her studies which brought the attention of her mentor, Ms. Flowers. She gave Angelou one life lesson that stuck with her forever, "It takes the human voice to infuse words with the shades of deeper meaning"( Angelou Caged Bird ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Sandra Day O Connor Research Paper Sandra Day–O'Connor: First Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day–O'Connor was nominated for the Supreme Court in 1981 by President Ronald Regan. An amazing woman, O'Connor's accomplishments are many. After, surprisingly, being accepted into Stanford law school, O'Connor graduated third in her class of 102 in 1952 (Institute 2000). O'Connor, like many women of her time, could not get a job as a lawyer because of prejudice and discrimination. This did not stop this determined woman, or even slow her down! The road from a remote southwestern Arizona ranch to the first female Republican Senate majority leader and then first female Supreme Court Justice was fraught with stereotypical female prejudice. Being a Republican, O'Connor was expected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Solar Mamas "Solar Mamas" directed by Jahane Noujaim discusses many important aspects of society and it highlights the journey of Rafea, a mother of four children struggling to achieve her dreams and benefit her village. The truth conveyed from this inspiring documentary is that women are powerful and if given the right opportunities in the right time, they can succeed and end up being fruitful in many possible ways. Feminism is an applicable theory to be related to the truth, because the broad idea of feminism is greatly discussed throughout the media. In fact, the documentary shows how Rafea is fighting to reach her dreams no matter what the costs, fights, and sacrifices are. Eventually she was able to reach her goal and fight the mainstream in her society. The Bedouin culture Rafea lives in, is based on patriarchy where men are in control and have a huge domination over women and their role in the society; moreover the idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rafea acts as the "Voice", as feminist theory states, that fights against the inequality in such superstructure where she refuses that being ignorant and ruled by men is acceptable because it is "part of our [Rafea's] culture". The most note–worthy quote in this documentary took place when Rafea was battling and talking about her dreams of success: "I want to explore the world. I want to learn ... I want to succeed and change the situation in the village." Rafea's will and urge to reach success is pretty powerful at this stage; in fact, she is trying to deliver a message that she is a powerful woman with big dreams that does not need any man to complete or aid her in any way. She just wants to be the voice that can change the idea of women in such culture; moreover, the fact that she is living in a society where women act only as nurturers and nothing else makes her sound more powerful and ... • 11. Amelia Earhart As An Inspirational Person An inspirational person that I truly adore would persist as Amelia Earhart. I admire her completely, considering how she portrayed herself as the first woman that proved to the world that women can engage in the same activities as men. Although Amelia was a female, she kept receiving attention by having similar interests as men. Amelia felt that she could prove them wrong. She got on a plane and almost achieved her goal; ascending across the ocean in an airplane, however, the only downside that occurred was the disappearance of the plane. If I had the chance to meet her I would ask her why she stood up? In fact, I would also ask why she found it necessary to prove that she could fly a plane just as exceptional as a man? The way she stood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In all honesty, she demonstrated off her strengths and proved that woman are just as exceptional as men, or unbelievably superior. If I could, I would ask to accompany her on her travels. The greatest answer of all time would be her saying yes to me. A dream of mine would be to accompany her and ascend up in the sky right by her side. I do not know what I would find, but if I could go back into the past, I would definitely ask her why she wanted to be the first female flier. Amelia Earhart would be the person I would interview considering she took a chance to stand up for women and I admire her for that. In fact, without her brave triumph, I have no idea where women would be at right now. This act of hers is why I adore herself is truly remarkable to me. She stood up by believing that she could achieve any goal as if she was a man. Everyone thought that she was crazy, but that did not stop her. She went far as the first female flier in history! Whereas men attain the simple road considering how men were portrayed. Men were always put first considering their sex. Men were considered strong where woman were considered weak. Amelia helped prove this wrong by proving to the world that women can fly planes too. I want to ask Amelia these questions because I would feel a sense of closure, knowing why she did what she did. That will help me grow as a person, by making me believe that I can achieve my goals and dreams too. Besides, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Elizabeth Blackwell: The Historical Figure I Admire The Most Competitive Edge Level One: Essay Response The historical figure I admire the most would be Elizabeth Blackwell; the first American woman to graduate in Medical School. The reasons for this particular and very singular woman to take the position almost to a roll model is to the remarkable era she started, my growing want to become a doctor someday, and to the feminist side of myself. Today women can do almost anything the put their minds to; excluding the inequalities in pay and many other things in this century as opposed to men and women. If a woman has a passion for learning and transmitting their wisdom, they become teachers. If a woman has a passion for saving lives and the difference one can make in the medical field and research, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Shakespeare Hermione Analysis Shakespeare presents Hermione as a remarkable woman starting from her first utterance, the personal pronoun "I". This drives the audience to believe she is independent, which connotes to freedom, allowing her to say to Leontes "you, sir, charge him too coldly". Also, this would have shocked traditional audiences as woman were inferior and were reliant on men as they were essentially possessions. Also, she only talks when Leontes says "speak you", as a defence in court she said she loved Polixenes even so and no other than" Leontes "commanded". Furthermore, she addresses Leontes as "sir" not by his personal name meaning he's superior showing Hermione's inferiority. Hermione could be argued as normal as woman had no rights. As Hermione was impertinent to Leontes saying "you, sir, judge him too coldly". This would have shocked the traditional audience but instead of telling Hermione off Leontes congratulates her saying "well said Hermione". This shows Leontes and Hermione's love. Shakespeare shows Hermione to be the better person and Leontes as the tragic hero. Shakespeare could be being counter–cultural conveying kings are corruptible not (as believed in culture starting with James the 1) infallible. Shakespeare is objecting to the divine rights of kings using Leontes as he is not adhering to this concept. Shakespeare does this in most of his plays under king James for example in Macbeth king Duncan makes a mistake (culturally unthinkable). Shakespeare uses a semantic ... • 17. Diction In Doris Lessing's A Woman On A Roof Through her remarkable short story titled "A Woman on a Roof," Doris Lessing is able to present the idea that a man's general disdain for women he doesn't have immediate access to may stem from an initial rejection. Lessing uses devices such as crisp diction and subtle irony placed carefully throughout her story to accurately convey this problematic and very relevant topic not only during the 1960s, but also today. To begin, Lessing describes a scene that is quite easy to picture due to her heavily descriptive diction. She uses words such as steamed, sizzled, smoking, and scorching, which makes it so that the audience can practically feel the heat of the summer day. This description of the temperature also seems to set up the tense or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end, Tom finally gathers up enough courage to speak with his love, but he is rejected...Not just rejected, but almost completely ignored. The tension and discomfort within this encounter can be seen when Lessing writes, "She lay there. He stood there. She said nothing. She had simply shut him out. He stood, saying nothing at all, for some minutes." The high contrast between Tom's embellished and unrealistic version of the woman and her actual self causes him to become heartbroken. As mentioned before, Lessing is attempting to show that in some situations, when a man does not have instant access to a woman, he develops feelings of hatred toward her. In Tom's fantasies, he always had this access, and she could be anyone he wanted her to be. When she doesn't exhibit elation at the sound of his proposal, he feels betrayed. This is an example of irony, as Tom had expected the woman to act as she did in his dreams, but she ended up doing the complete opposite and letting him down. "A Woman on a Roof" ends by describing Tom's downfall and his drunkenness (and, based on Lessing's wordplay, it is intentionally unclear whether he is literally drunk or if he is metaphorically drunk off of the hatred he feels for the woman). It seems as if, at this point, Tom has essentially turned into Stanley. Tom started off harboring only feelings of admiration and love for the woman, but he eventually holds the same opinions of Stanley's that he once couldn't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Women In The Bible Analysis In Paul Hége's book, Women in the Bible, Qumran, and Early Rabbinic Literature: Their Status and Roles Scholarship writes about, "The status of women in Scripture and in Qumranic and rabbinic literatures has often been guided by biased preconceptions in both directions" (Héger page 5) meaning by male citizens and another scholars alike. One of the biggest argument from the Bible, was the creation woman. As stated by Heger, "The traditional commentators connect these midrashim to the preceding as other solutions to the apparent contradiction between humankind's creation as androgynous, subsequently separated, and the biblical assertion that woman was created from man's rib." Referring that, women are leftover fragments from man. Heger stated this as wrong, and God had more meaning for women, such as being Adam's helper, not slave. But others interpretations of the passages such as, "For Adam was formed first, then Eve" give women a lower ranking among her peers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So in contrast there should not be homosexuality nor should women be permitted to communicate. How could women pick certain selections, yet, by–pass the passages about ridiculing them. • 21. How Does Truman Capote Use Imagery In A Christmas Memory In Truman Capote's short story "A Christmas Memory" imagery and symbolism are used by the author to show that friendship has no age limit. Truman uses very vivid details and many different types of figurative language to show his theme ,which is that friendship has no age. An example of symbolism is, "As if I expected to see, rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying toward heaven" (6). After getting the news of his friend's death, he goes outside and almost expects to see kites. In this example of symbolism, the author shows us how deep a bond Buddy and his friend have by showing us a glimpse of Buddy's mind and how his heart is going to heaven with his friend. However, I don't think they have taken into consideration of how a man's life struggle could have affected that. For example, Dimitri Antirich Guav, the main character in the short story, "The lady with the dog" by Anton Chekhov had married young and was in an unhappy relationship. As a result, he has a growing love for Anna. In what ways does Dmitri prove his love for Anna is just to fulfill his narcissistic persona, could this love be sincere or enough to fill up his ego? The way apes on talks about others can really say a lot about themselves. Dmitri, a remarkable character in the story is a forty year old man that is unhappy with his marriage which started in college. Although it is an autobiography, the book is written from a third person point of view. It is constructed of an array of individual thoughts from "the troop", the name of the collective group of personalities this woman portrays. As explained in the preface by Chase's psychotherapist, "The troop members 'see' and 'hear' each other and carry on with one another that are real to them" (XXII). Because of the things that Truddi went through, she developed Dissociative Personality Disorder, which was previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder. A troop member would come out when prompted by Dr. Phillips to tell a new story of something that had happened to her. It is through the flicks that the Troop was able to develop their memories of the beginnings of abuse when she was less than two years old, and gain an understanding of all of the times that she had been violated by her own stepfather. Over the course of the book they develop a understanding of the things that happened to her while she was the victim of constant molestation, when she had been treated like a sexual object, and when her stepfather committed other unspeakable acts. This is where the title "Troop Member" comes from, as she is a small child who wails like a rabbit whenever flicks of a traumatic event surfaced she would take hold and cry like the rabbits who her stepfather had abused in front of her. Once these things had come out, the Troop started making plots for revenge. It seems to be similar to Kahlo in that Artemisia's father was also an artist and taught his only daughter to paint. Artemisia was introduced to painting in her father's workshop, where she showed much more talent than her brothers, who worked alongside her. She learned drawing, how to mix color, and how to paint. Her approach to subject matter was different from her father's, because her paintings are highly naturalistic, while his are idealized. Her own dreams seemed well recorded in letters she wrote conveying the fact that she understood that her status as a female painter was unusual. Also she knew that she posed a threat to the male establishment and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One observer said, "She's playing the 'I'm a sexy woman' card." The film divulges that Artemisia is known at least as much for her personal story as for her work. It notes that she was raped at age 17 by a friend of her father's, yet another painter, named Agostino Tassi. This part of her experience is clearly documented in court transcripts, which the filmmaker finds in Rome, and is highlighted in close–ups of the pages. Writer Alexandra Lapierre, who describes herself as "obsessed" with Artemisia, says "There is a pulse of life in her which you hear extremely well in the trial." Which is proven by Artemisia's description of the assault being very vivid, as well as her description of her efforts to resist. Tassi protested that he was only trying to teach her "perspective" in painting and that no such attack took place. Her father brought suit against Tassi at least in part because he had dishonored the family, and decreased the value of Artemisia as a woman and wife, as she was no longer a virgin. Tassi was convicted and sentenced to one year in prison; Artemisia was shipped off to Florence, where she married a model artist named Pierantonio ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Women's Role in Shakespearean Tragedy In Shakespeare's tragedies and his plays in general, we can come across several types of female characters. Their influence with other characters and their purpose or role, often underestimated like women themselves, will be this essay's main subject. Women in Shakespearean plays have always had important roles, sometimes even the leading role. Whether they create the main conflicts and base of the plays, or bring up interesting moral and cultural questions, they have always been put in challenging situations. Some women are stronger than others, and their effect on the play is different for each one. They often even surpass the male heroes. It's almost unbelieveable, if we take into consideration the status of women, of course with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Only transgressing the patriarchal bounds of femininity by marrying so soon after her husband's death and not remaining in passive grief makes her "strong" but grim indeed. This provides Hamlet with a model of women's inconstancy ("Frailty, thy name is woman."). On the other hand in the portrayal of unstable Ophelia Shakespeare shows how men in a strong patriarchal society controlled women in the 1600s. The influence of men in Ophelia's life is evident throughout by the relationships with men in her life. It is interesting to note that Ophelia's first scene is in a very domestic setting. She is influenced and controlled by those around her, and unable to express her deep feelings because of their control. Actually she suffers as a result of Hamlet's patriarchal values of womanhood. Ophelia's subsequent madness and eventual suicide (so typical sign of the classical tragedy) came as a result of the pressure and control her father and the king had over her. At her father's death she lost her identity completely, and along with that her sanity. But she has a major influence on Hamlet, and his return to sanity, despite the fact, she is a victim. Juliet is given similar personality in another Shakespeare's tragic play, "Romeo and Juliet". Again it explores the effects of patriarchal authority exerted over women and the responses to it. Through heroine Juliet, Lady Capulet, and the Nurse, Shakespeare establishes a common understanding of this type of society, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The names were Katherine Goble, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, who were all 3 geniuses in their fields of study. Katherine was a math expert, Dorothy was a supervisor, and Mary was an engineer. During a time of racism, nobody would've imagined that 3 African American women, along with many more women, that they would work for N.A.S.A. These 3 women went through so many obstacles in their life. These 3 women are perfect examples of overcoming anything that stands in your way. Katherine Goble, a little girl out of White Sulphur Springs, WV, being blessed with many different ways, did not know she would soon become a very special person at N.A.S.A. Although her family was very poor, schools funded her to go to the right schools. She had a very caring mother that would do anything for her little girl. Katherine grew up with one of the smartest brains in her time. She was so smart that she was above her grade level. This gift from God will play out a big role later on in Katherine's job with N.A.S.A. In this time, it was hard enough being an African American but how do you think it would've been if you was also a woman? She has 3 children back home but terribly, her husband passed away a few years back. For Katherine, being at N.A.S.A was a dream, but not everything there was a perfect fantasy. There were many complications that she had to face in her time of working there. At N.A.S.A there were separate bathrooms for whites and blacks, so Katherine had to walk a half mile just to use the restroom every day no matter the weather condition. A sane person would absolutely hate doing that just to relieve yourself so one day she put an end to that situation. Mr. Harrison, Katherine's boss, asked her where she goes for 40 minutes every day so Katherine had some things to express. In her very expressive talk with Mr. Harrison, Katherine stated, " Excuse me if I have to use the bathroom a few times a day." (Hidden Figures) The result of that situation was Mr. Harrison ... Her poem Phenomenal Woman, talks about how she is not a "pretty woman," yet that does not stop the men from looking and wondering about her. Maya Angelou uses imagery, tone, and the title to describe her view of herself compared to the "pretty woman" Imagery in the poem Phenomenal Woman is important. Maya Angelou uses imagery in the poem because the speaker is comparing herself, a regular woman, to the way media suggest woman should look. She uses this literary technique in each stanza, especially in the second stanza of the poem, describing how men react to her and not the "pretty woman." "Then they swarm around me, hive of honey bees" (lines 19–20), creating an example of imagery saying that wherever the speaker ends up men began to surround her. In all of the stanzas, almost in the middle of each one, the speaker describes herself, "It's in the arch of my back, the sun of my smile, the ride of my breast, the grace of my style" (lines 38–41). • 45. A Great Variety Of Gender Construction Daniel Lindsey Professor Hogue HIST 449 9 October 2014 Essay One Throughout our class, we have seen a great variety of gender construction. Through centuries of gender divides, there have been women who created for themselves and that of their community new identities that not only grew local and worldwide attention, but have inspired historians for centuries. In the case of Malinche, she used her womanhood to secure her spot with Cortes, as he conquered and ruled over the Aztecs. Ursela de Jesus contributed to the Catholic church of her time, and made a new ideal for servant hood as a woman in the church. Yet not all of these experiences were positive; trials and tribulations often faced Malinche and Ursela. Through the occcurences of these women it is evident that no matter the circumstance or outcome, women face a double standard, yet in certain cases use their knowledge to work past these standards. Malinche was multilingual. Because of her advanced preoccupation with learning languages and using the detailed experiences of her family background, she was able to advance Cortes and his army. Upon analyzing the way in which Malinche furthered Cortes, one can deduce that throughout her life, she was held to an unfair standard of life expectations, simply because she was a women. She too is a representation of an independent and impassioned female, rebelling against the social constraints posed upon women, and pushes the threshold of its definitions of womanhood. This is seen throughout the novel as she explores her own thoughts and emotions, giving them full reign over her actions and behavior. Her defiant refusal to be bullied, the exploration of her strength through sexuality, her refusal to settle into the domestic feminine model, and her decision to leave the Bottom and go to college, make Sula a remarkably strong and intimidating woman for her time. Like Bertha, Sula's displays of the overt rejection of societal ideals mark her as something supernatural and evil. Compared to a sorceress and witch, Sula is linked with many gothic supernatural symbols throughout the novel, such as her strange dream that turns into reality when her mother burns alive, and the "plague of robins" that follow her return to the Bottom (Morrison, 89). Two months after the wedding, he had given her first of the many to come brutal beatings (699). This trait turns out to be one of her major flaws that cause her to suffer a great deal of problems in her tormenting marriage. Later on, Delia was able to change to an assertive woman." She seized the iron skillet from the stove and struck a defensive pose, which act surprised him greatly, coming from her. It cowed him and did not strike her as he usually did. (Hurston 699). This act of bravery translates to a stronger woman. Even when Sykes brought a snake to the house, she stood for what was rightfully hers despite her great phobia for snakes. Hurston tells us that when Sykes tried to stir up an argument, Delia replied," Ah aint for no fuss tonight Sykes. Ah just come from taking sacrament at the church house"(698). This portrays ... • 64. Comparing O-Lan And The Virtuous Woman Throughout the complicated web of humanity, we have had many people that are recognized today as great. From Christopher Columbus to Madonna, fame and recognition have graced many great members of our society. But many more members of our society, that deserve respect, don't receive it. This was often the case in the past for women, as they were not treated equally to men. Yet the women of these times had a lot of value, especially compared to the praise they were given. Two examples of women of this quality are O–lan from The Good Earth, and the "Virtuous" woman from Proverbs 31:10–31. Both O–lan and The Virtuous Woman have many similarities and a few differences. Both of them provide a lot of value in the relationships that they are a part of, both romantically and platonically. These woman are both models that not only women, but all people should aspire to be like. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, neither of them need to be spoiled. O–lan spends much of her life in poverty, from her early days as a slave to the days of her and Wang Lung begging in the streets. This parallels The Virtuous Woman, when she is described in Proverbs 31:11–12 "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life." This verse shows that The Virtuous Woman is like O–lan in respect to her humility and acceptance of life. Another way that these characters are similar is there tendency to give to their families. O–lan and the virtuous woman always make sure that their family are taken care of. These good qualities are shared between the two characters, highlighting both of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Relationships And Independence In Barbara Kingsolver's The... Thee most inspiring issue or aspect of The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, in my view, is the relationships and independence shown by the female characters. Women like Taylor and Lou Ann show a close and loving relationship towards each other. Individually, both of them show lots of strength and very little weakness emotionally from their day to day of their lives. They relate many ways since both are single moms taking care of a child by themselves. The independence shown by these two is remarkable even by our modern world. Obviously, Taylor shows a great deal of independence through the entire book. One example can be shown in chapter one. Taylor left her hometown by herself with unreliable car and drove into Taylorville. There, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Free Argumentative Essays: Can Women Have It All? After first hearing "Can Women Have it All?" it can seem like a simple question on the surface, but there are numerous aspects that relate to its answer. The question is not a simple yes or no, as the idea of "having it all" is different for each woman. People have a perception that working mothers should be superwomen all of the time, but that is not realistic––sacrifices have to be made. Thus, the idea of "having it all" does not seem completely attainable all of the time, but it ultimately comes down to the individual woman, and her idea of what "having it all" actually entails. While this may be a more cynical view, it is much more realistic. This view is very similar to that of Anne–Marie Slaughter's initial views, especially being a top political woman with a family. Women are forced to make enormous sacrifices, so they are seldom able to fully balance work and home life. A 2009 study relating to Gender, Work and Organization notes that "balance may be an unachievable goal because it is built on an individualistic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A woman at the top of the corporate ladder, like Sheryl Sandberg, has the means to provide a nanny for her children while she is at work, a privilege that many women who hold multiple jobs to provide for their families do not have. Sandberg is a great proponent of women "leaning in," seeking to follow their ambitions, while figuring out how to strike a balance with personal life. She is a remarkable female advocate, but it is important to note that a woman of her stature is essentially a minority. With her vast wealth, it is likely much easier to balance the home aspect, as money provides her with these resources. Unfortunately, the reality is that many working women may not have this financial comfort blanket; this is not to say these struggling working women should not try to balance their lives, they should––it may just be more ... Till the later half of the 18th century the women were not considered to be able to have any economic rights. They were exclusively dependent upon the will of their family male members which included husband, brothers and sons. Today women are equal to males and proving themselves equal in every range of life. Gender bias discrimination is a global phenomenon today. The biggest challenge, before the entire world is that of gender justice. There is no existence of a single gender bias neither in the Western world nor in traditional Asian and in the African societies. At present we stand at the residue of the 21st century but we are still unable to identify a society where there is complete gender equality. Woman, the most deprived group of humans, is the architect of civilization, the centre of the family, the protector of the house, the inspiration and strength of man on every front, who shaped the purpose of human race. • 74. She-Wolf In Medieval History: Eleanor Of Aquitaine Eleanor of Aquitaine has been one of the most renowned women or 'she–wolves' in medieval history, fascinating historians for over 800 years. She was the heiress to the region of Aquitaine in Southern France, she became the queen of France, by marrying Louis VII and later of England by marrying Henry II. She was also the mother of two of England's kings, Richard I and John. She has been associated with the crusades, the development of courtly love and the Plantegenet–Capetian conflict. However, there is very little evidence about her life from primary historians. This has lead historians and novelists to speculate and create a character different to the real Eleanor: she 'has been a victim of both a black legend and beneficiary of an embellished ... Eleanor was 'remarkable for in a period where females were invariably relegated to a servile role': she was challenging gender roles and was a strong woman in her own right and her contemporary Richard of Devizes said she was 'an incomparable woman'. The birth of Eleanor as a heroine came out of 20th Century feminism, these historians attempted to rid her of her black legend and misogynistic stereotypes. Eleanor held the region of aquitaine in her own right and governed it even during her marriage to Henry II, she was queen of both France and England and also governed on behalf of her husband Henry II during his absences and again on behalf of her son Richard I, when he was a prisoner in Germany. Furthermore, she skilfully played her role in political life: particularly in making sure John succeeded Richard I, by pleading his case in Anjou by fighting the claim made by her nephew. Earlier in France, Louis 'readily allowed her to take a part in political decision–making' and she issued decrees under her owl seal. In one instance in 1192 while visiting Cambridgeshire, she was stopped by villagers who were complaining of the effects of a ban: she took pity on them, dropped everything and went to urge the archbishop of rouen to remedy the situation. This demonstrates she was independent and working under her own authority. Additionally, Eleanor was very clever and apparently uniquely educated, as she was brought up in the court of Aquitaine, the birthplace of the idea of courtly love, and was the granddaughter of William IX 'the First ...
